We compute the electronic structure, momentum resolved spectral function and optical conductivity of the new superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs within the combination of the Density functional theory and the Dynamical Mean Field Theory. We find that the compound in the normal state is a strongly correlated metal and the parent compound is a bad metal at the verge of the metal insulator transition. We argue that the superconductivity is not phonon mediated.
We performed a comprehensive angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the electronic band structure of LaOFeAs single crystals. We found that samples cleaved at low temperature show an unstable and highly complicated band structure, whereas samples cleaved at high temperature exhibit a stable and clearer electronic structure. Using \emph{in-situ} surface doping with K and supported by first-principles calculations, we identify both surface and bulk bands. Our assignments are confirmed by the difference in the temperature dependence of the bulk and surface states.
The electronic structure of LaOFeAs, a parent compound of iron-arsenic superconductors, is studied by angleresolved photoemission spectroscopy. By examining its dependence on photon energy, polarization, sodium dosing and the counting of Fermi surface volume, both the bulk and the surface contributions are identified. We find that a bulk band moves toward high binding energies below structural transition, and shifts smoothly across the spin density wave transition by about 25 meV. Our data suggest the band reconstruction may play a crucial role in the spin density wave transition, and the stru…
We present scanning tunneling microscopy studies of the LaOFeAs parent compound of iron pnictide superconductors. Topographic imaging reveals two types of atomically flat surfaces, corresponding to the exposed LaO layer and FeAs layer respectively. On one type of surface, we observe strong standing wave patterns induced by quasiparticle interference of two-dimensional surface states. The distribution of scattering wavevectors exhibits pronounced two-fold symmetry, consistent with the nematic electronic structure found in the Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 parent state.
In order to assist the search of new superconductors in iron selenide materials by intercalation, we calculate the crystal and electronic structures of MgOFeSe using the first-principles density functional theory. MgOFeSe is isotructural to the parent compound of iron pnictide superconductor LaOFeAs. In LaOFeAs, the anion O$^{2-}$ is located at the center of each LaO tetrahedra. But for MgOFeSe, we find that the crystal structure with the cation Mg$^{2+}$ as the tetrahedral center in the MgO layer is energetically more stable. The low energy band structures around the Fermi surfaces of MgOFeSe…
We unveil the novel physical origin of the insulating block checkerboard antiferromagnetism in vacancy-ordered K2Fe4Se5. Our first-principles electronic structure analysis reveals its incompatibility with a simple Fermi-surface nesting or Mott insulator scenario, and suggests the picture of coexisting itinerant and localized electronic states. Consistently, we demonstrate that it can be unified with the metallic collinear or bicollinear antiferromagnetism of the vacancy-free parent compounds LaOFeAs, BaFe2As2, or FeTe in the spin-fermion model. These results indicate that the blocking effects …
We have investigated correlated electronic structures and the phase diagram of electron-doped hydrocarbon molecular solids, based on the dynamical mean-field theory. We have found that the ground state of hydrocarbon-based superconductors such as electron-doped picene and coronene is a multi-band Fermi liquid, while that of non-superconducting electron-doped pentacene is a single-band Fermi liquid in the proximity of the metal-insulator transition. The size of the molecular orbital energy level splitting plays a key role in producing the superconductivity of electron-doped hydrocarbon solids. …
We present a comparative density-functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) study of the two known superconducting members of the rare-earth (R) layered nickelate family: hole-doped RNiO$_{2}$ ($n=\infty$) and R$_{6}$Ni$_{5}$O$_{12}$ ($n=5$). At the same nominal carrier concentration, these two materials exhibit nearly identical electronic structures and many-body correlations effects: mass enhancements, self-energies, and occupations. However, the fermiology of the quintuple-layer nickelate is more two-dimensional-like than its infinite-layer counterpart making this new sup…
To understand nontrivial edge electronic states in strongly-correlated metals such as cuprate superconductors, we study the two-dimensional Hubbard models with open edge boundary. The position-dependences of the spin susceptibility and the self-energy are carefully analyzed self-consistently, by using the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation. It is found that spin susceptibilities are strongly enlarged near the (1,1) open edge when the system is near the half-filling. The enhancement is large even if the negative feedback from the self-energy is considered in the FLEX approximation. The p…
An algorithm to find a graded Projected Entangled-Pair State representation of the ground state wave functions is developed for translationally invariant strongly correlated electronic systems on infinite-size lattices in two spatial dimensions. It is tested for the two-dimensional t-J model at and away from half filling, with truncation dimensions up to 6. We are able to locate a line of phase separation, which qualitatively agrees with the results based on the high-temperature expansions. We find that the model exhibits an extended s-wave superconductivity for J=0.4t at quarter filling. Howe…
Unconventional superconductivity (SC) is said to occur when Cooper pair formation is dominated by repulsive electron-electron interactions, so that the symmetry of the pair wavefunction is other than isotropic s-wave. The strong, on-site, repulsive electron-electron interactions that are the proximate cause of such superconductivity are more typically drivers of commensurate magnetism. Indeed, it is the suppression of commensurate antiferromagnetism (AF) that usually allows this type of unconventional superconductivity to emerge. Importantly, however, intervening between these AF and SC phases…
We present an overview of various theoretical methods with detailed emphasis on an intermediate Coulomb-U coupling model. This model is based on material-specific ab-initio band structure from which correlation effects are computed via self-consistent GW-based self-energy corrections arising from spin-fluctuations. We apply this approach to four isostructural intermetallic actinides PuCoIn5, PuCoGa5, PuRhGa5 belonging to the Pu-115 family, and UCoGa5, a member of the U-115 family. The 115 families share the property of spin-orbit split density of states enabling substantial spin fluctuations a…
We study theoretically the electron transport in a 1D conductor adiabatically connected to a superconducting and normal metal leads. In the case of non-interacting we show that ac voltage applied along with dc voltage modifies I-V curve resembling a regime of photon-assisted tunneling. We obtain in the limit of low voltages, that the electron-electron interaction affects electronic transport resulting in a decrease of conductance and features in the frequency dependence of the impedance.
ComDMFT is a massively parallel computational package to study the electronic structure of correlated-electron systems (CES). Our approach is a parameter-free method based on ab initio linearized quasiparticle self-consistent GW (LQSGW) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The non-local part of the electronic self-energy is treated within ab initio LQSGW and the local strong correlation is treated within DMFT. In addition to ab initio LQSGW+DMFT, charge self-consistent LDA+DMFT methodology is also implemented, enabling multiple methods in one open-source platform for the electronic structur…
We use the Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation with the charge-density-wave (CDW) instability to study the effect of correlated hopping on the stability of electronic ferroelectricity in the extended Falicov-Kimball model (FKM) in two dimensions. It is shown that the effects of correlated hopping term are very strong, especially for negative values of the $f$-level energy $E_f$, where they lead to: (i) stabilization of the ferroelectric ground state with a spontaneous hybridization $P_{df}=\langle d^+f \rangle$ for positive values of correlated hopping parameter $t'_d$, (ii) stabilization of the a…
Domain walls in interacting electronic systems can have distinct localized states, which often govern physical properties and may lead to unprecedented functionalities and novel devices. However, electronic states within domain walls themselves have not been clearly identified and understood for strongly correlated electron systems. Here, we resolve the electronic states localized on domain walls in a Mott-charge-density-wave(CDW) insulator 1T-TaS2 using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. We establish that the domain wall state decomposes into two nonconducting states located at the center of do…
An interface modification of LCMO-BTO superlattices was found to massively influence magnetic and magnetotransport properties. Moreover it determines the crystal structure of the manganite layers, changing it from orthorhombic (Pnma) for the conventional superlattice (cSL), to rhombohedral (R-3c) for the modified one (mSL). While the cSL shows extremely nonlinear ac transport, the mSL is an electrically homogeneous material. The observations go beyond an oversimplified picture of dead interface layers and evidence the importance of electronic correlations at perovskite interfaces.
A consistent microscopic theory of superconductivity for strongly correlated electronic systems is presented. The Dyson equation for the normal and anomalous Green functions for the projected (Hubbard) electronic operators is derived. To compare various mechanisms of pairing, the extended Hubbard model is considered where the intersite Coulomb repulsion and the electron-phonon interaction are taken into account. We obtain the $d$-wave pairing with high-$T_c$ induced by the strong kinematical interaction of electrons with spin fluctuations, while the Coulomb repulsion and the electron-phonon in…

In strongly correlated metals, long-range magnetic order is sometimes found only upon introduction of a minute amount of $disordered$ non-magnetic impurities to the unordered clean samples. To explain such anti-intuitive behavior, we propose a scenario of inducing electronic (magnetic, orbital, or charge) order via chemical disorder in systems with coexisting local moments and itinerant carriers. By disrupting the damaging long-range quantum fluctuation originating from the itinerant carriers, the electronic order preferred by the local moment can be re-established. We demonstrate this mechani…
Quantum materials with tunable correlated and/or topological electronic states, such as the electronic Kagome lattice, provide an ideal platform to study the exotic quantum properties. However, the real-space investigations on the correlated electronic Kagome lattice have been rarely reported. Herein, we report on the electronic Kagome lattice emerging in the correlated charge-density-wave (CDW) state of 1T-TaS$_2$ at ~200 K via variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (VT-STM). This emergent Kagome lattice can be considered a fractional electron-filling superstructure with reduced t…
The method of electronic structure calculations for strongly correlated disordered materials is developed employing the basic idea of coherent potential approximation (CPA). Evolution of electronic structure and spin magnetic moment value with concentration $x$ in strongly correlated Ni$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$O solid solutions is investigated in the frame of this method. The obtained values of energy gap and magnetic moment are in agreement with the available experimental data.
We derive a general formalism for evaluating the high-frequency limit of the thermoelectric power of strongly correlated materials, which can be straightforwardly implemented in available first principles LDA+DMFT programs. We explore this formalism using model Hamiltonians and we investigate the validity of approximating the static thermoelectric power $S_0$, by its high-temperature limit, $S^*$. We point out that the behaviors of $S^*$ and $S_0$ are qualitatively different for a correlated Fermi liquid near the Mott transition, when the temperature is in the coherent regime. When the tempera…
The use of effective local Coulomb interactions that are dynamical, that is, frequency-dependent, is an efficient tool to describe the effect of long-range Coulomb interactions and screening thereof in solids. The dynamical character of the interaction introduces the coupling to screening degrees of freedom such as plasmons or particle-hole excitations into the many-body description. We summarize recent progress using these concepts, putting emphasis on dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) calculations with dynamical interactions ("doubly dynamical mean field theory"). We discuss the relation to…
Combining strong electron correlations [1-4] and nontrivial electronic topology [5] holds great promise for discovery. So far, this regime has been rarely accessed and systematic studies are much needed to advance the field. Here we demonstrate the control of topology in a heavy fermion system. We use magnetic field to manipulate Weyl nodes in a Weyl-Kondo semimetal [6-8], up to the point where they annihilate in a topological quantum phase transition. The suppression of the topological characteristics occurs in an intact and only weakly varying strongly correlated "background". Thus, topology…
Recent trends of ab initio studies and progress in methodologies for electronic structure calculations of strongly correlated electron systems are discussed. The interest for developing efficient methods is motivated by recent discoveries and characterizations of strongly correlated electron materials and by requirements for understanding mechanisms of intriguing phenomena beyond a single-particle picture. A three-stage scheme is developed as renormalized multi-scale solvers (RMS) utilizing the hierarchical electronic structure in the energy space. It provides us with an ab initio downfolding …
Negative compressibility is a sign of thermodynamic instability of open or non-equilibrium systems. In quantum materials consisting of multiple mutually coupled subsystems, the compressibility of one subsystem can be negative if it is countered by positive compressibility of the others. Manifestations of this effect have so far been limited to low-dimensional dilute electron systems. Here we present evidence from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) for negative electronic compressibility (NEC) in the quasi-three-dimensional (3D) spin-orbit correlated metal (Sr1-xLax)3Ir2O7. Incre…
By means of $ab~initio$ computation schemes, we examine the low-energy electronic structure of monolayer TaS$_2$ in its low-temperature commensurate charge-density-wave structure. We estimate and take into account both local and non-local Coulomb correlations within cRPA (constrained random phase approximation) and GW+EDMFT (GW plus extended dynamical mean-field theory) method. Mott nature of its insulating phase is clearly identified. By increasing the level of nonlocal approximation from DMFT ($V=0$) to EDMFT and GW+EDMFT, a systematic change of charge screening effects is clearly observed w…
We investigate by means of the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation the transport properties of a strongly-correlated slab subject to Hubbard repulsion and connected with to two metallic leads kept at a different electrochemical potential. We focus on the real-time evolution of the electronic properties after the slab is connected to the leads and consider both metallic and Mott insulating slabs. When the correlated slab is metallic, the system relaxes to a steady-state that sustains a finite current. The zero-bias conductance is finite and independent of the degree of correlations within t…
Atomic-scale precision epitaxy of perovskite oxide superlattices provides unique opportunities for controlling the correlated electronic structures, activating effective control knobs for intriguing functionalities including electromagnetic, thermoelectric, and electrocatalytic behaviors. In this study, we investigated the close interplay between the atomic and electronic structures of correlated superlattices synthesized by atomic-scale precision epitaxy. In particular, we employ superlattices composed of correlated magnetic SrRuO3 (SRO) and quantum paraelectric SrTiO3 (STO) layers. In those …
In this lectures I discuss the electronic liquid crystal (ELC) phases in correlated electronic systems, what these phases are and in what context they arise. I will go over the strongest experimental evidence for these phases in a variety of systems: the two-dimensional electron gas in magnetic fields, the bilayer material Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ (also in magnetic fields), and a set of phenomena in the cuprate superconductors (and more recently in the pnictide materials) that can be most simply understood in terms of ELC phases. Finally we will go over the theory of these phases, focusing on effecti…
Bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) reveals for as-grown epitaxial films of half-metallic ferromagnetic CrO2(100) a pronounced screening feature in the Cr 2p3/2 core level and an asymmetry in the O 1s core level. This gives evidence of a finite, metal-type Fermi edge, which is surprisingly not observed in HAXPES. A spectral weight shift in HAXPES away from the Fermi energy is attributed to single-ion recoil effects due to high energy photoelectrons. In conjunction with inverse PES the intrinsic correlated Mott-Hubbard-type electronic structure is unravelled, yielding …
