Effects of Coulomb correlation on LaOFeAs electronic structure have been investigated by LDA+DMFT(QMC) method. The calculation results show that LaOFeAs is in the regime of intermediate correlation strength with significant part of the spectral density moved from the Fermi energy to Hubbard bands. However the system is not on the edge of metal insulator-transition because increase of the Coulomb interaction parameter value from $U$=4.0 eV to $U$=5.0 eV did not result in insulator state. Correlations affect different d-orbitals not in the same way. $t_{2g}$ states ($xz,yz$ and $x^2-y^2$ orbitals) have higher energy due to crystal filed splitting and are nearly half-filled. Their spectral functions have pseudogap with Fermi energy position on the higher sub-band slope. Lower energy $e_g$ set of d-orbitals ($3z^2-r^2$ and $xy$) have significantly larger occupancy values with typically metallic spectral functions.
The electronic properties of paramagnetic V_2O_3 are investigated by the ab-initio computational scheme LDA+DMFT(QMC). This approach merges the local density approximation (LDA) with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) and uses numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations (QMC) to solve the effective Anderson impurity model of DMFT. Starting with the crystal structure of metallic V_2O_3 and insulating (V_{0.962}Cr_{0.038})_2O_3 we find a Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator-like transition at a Coulomb interaction U\approx 5eV. The calculated spectrum is in very good agreement with experiment. Fur…
We present a new method, ePT, for extrapolating few known coefficients of a perturbative expansion. Controlled by comparisons with numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) results, 10th order strong-coupling perturbation theory (PT) for the Hubbard model on the Bethe lattice is reliably extrapolated to infinite order. Within dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), we obtain continuous estimates of energy E and double occupancy D with unprecedented precision O(10^{-5}) for the Mott insulator above its stability edge U_{c1}=4.78 as well as critical exponents. In addition, we derive corresponding …
The spectral properties of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$, a doped Mott insulator with strong Coulomb correlations, are calculated with the ab initio computational scheme LDA+DMFT(QMC). It starts from the non-interacting electronic band structure as calculated by the local density approximation (LDA), and introduces the missing correlations by the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), using numerically exact quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) techniques to solve the resulting self-consistent multi-band single-impurity problem. The results of the LDA+DMFT(QMC) approach for the photoemission spectra of La$_{1…
We present clear numerical evidence for the coexistence of metallic and insulating dynamical mean field theory(DMFT) solutions in a half-filled single-band Hubbard model with bare semicircular density of states at finite temperatures. Quantum Monte Carlo(QMC) method is used to solve the DMFT equations. We discuss important technical aspects of the DMFT-QMC which need to be taken into account in order to obtain the reliable results near the coexistence region. Among them are the critical slowing down of the iterative solutions near phase boundaries, the convergence criteria for the DMFT iterati…
We develop a novel analytic continuation method for self-energies on the Matsubara domain as computed by quantum Monte Carlo simulations within dynamical mean field theory (QMC+DMFT). Unlike a maximum entropy (maxEn) procedure employed for the last thirty years, our approach is based on a machine learning (ML) technique in combination with the iterative perturbative theory impurity solver of the dynamical mean field theory self-consistent process (IPT+DMFT). The input and output training datasets for ML are simultaneously obtained from IPT+DMFT calculations on Matsubara and real frequency doma…
The LDA+DMFT approach merges conventional band structure theory in the local density approximation (LDA) with a state-of-the-art many-body technique, the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). This new computational scheme has recently become a powerful tool for ab initio investigations of real materials with strong electronic correlations. In this paper an introduction to the basic ideas and the set-up of the LDA+DMFT approach is given. Results for the photoemission spectra of the transition metal oxide La_{1-x}Sr_xTiO_3, obtained by solving the DMFT-equations by quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) simula…
We study valence fluctuations at finite temperatures in the extended periodic Anderson model, where the Coulomb interaction between conduction and localized $f$-electrons is taken into account, using dynamical mean-field theory combined with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo (CT-QMC) method. The valence transition with the hysteresis is clearly found, indicating the first-order phase transition between the Kondo and mixed-valence states. We demonstrate that spin correlation rapidly develops when the system approaches the valence transition point. The comparison of the impurity solvers, %…
Dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) is one of the most widely-used methods to treat accurately electron correlation effects in ab-initio real material calculations. Many modern large-scale implementations of DMFT in electronic structure codes involve solving a quantum impurity model with a Continuous-Time Quantum Monte Carlo (CT-QMC) solver. The main advantage of CT-QMC is that, unlike standard quantum Monte Carlo approaches, it is able to generate the local Green's functions of the correlated system on an arbitrarily fine imaginary time grid, and is free of any systematic errors. In this work,…
We present a new algorithm which allows for direct numerically exact solutions within dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). It is based on the established Hirsch-Fye quantum Monte Carlo (HF-QMC) method. However, the DMFT impurity model is solved not at fixed imaginary-time discretization Delta_tau, but for a range of discretization grids; by extrapolation, unbiased Green functions are obtained in each DMFT iteration. In contrast to conventional HF-QMC, the multigrid algorithm converges to the exact DMFT fixed points. It extends the useful range of Delta_tau, is precise and reliable even in the i…
Spectral properties of fcc-Ce have been calculated in frames of modern DFT+DMFT method with Hybridization expansion CT-QMC solver. The influence of Hund's exchange and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on spectral properties of Ce were investigated. SOC is responsible for the shape of spectra near the Fermi level and Hund's exchange interaction doesn't change the obtained spectra and can be neglected.
We present an algorithm for solving the self-consistency equations of the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) with high precision and efficiency at low temperatures. In each DMFT iteration, the impurity problem is mapped to an auxiliary Hamiltonian, for which the Green function is computed by combining determinantal quantum Monte Carlo (BSS-QMC) calculations with a multigrid extrapolation procedure. The method is numerically exact, i.e., yields results which are free of significant Trotter errors, but retains the BSS advantage, compared to direct QMC impurity solvers, of linear (instead of cubi…

A detailed comparison of QMC/DMFT results for the non-isotropic two-band Hubbard model by Liebsch [Phys. Rev. B 70, 165103 (2004)] and C. Knecht, N. Bluemer, and P. G. J. van Dongen [cond-mat/0505106 (submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett.)] is given. Both results are shown to be in excellent agreement. Thus, the claims by Knecht et al.: ``The second transition [was] not seen in earlier studies using QMC and IPT'' and ``Our high-precision data correct earlier QMC results by Liebsch'' are shown to be unfounded.
A recent paper by Bluemer et al. [cond-mat/0609758] again criticizes earlier QMC/DMFT results by Liebsch [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 70}, 165103 (2004)]. This criticism is shown to be unfounded.
We propose a fast impurity solver for the general quantum impurity model based on the perturbation theory around the atomic limit, which can be used in combination with the local density approximation (LDA) and the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). We benchmark the solver in the two band Hubbard model within DMFT against quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) and numerical renormalization group (NRG) results. We find that the solver works very well in the paramagnetic Mott insulator phase. We also apply this impurity solver to the DMFT study of the anti-ferromagnetic phase transition in the unfrustrated …
A novel approach to electronic correlations and magnetism of crystals based on realistic electronic structure calculations is reviewed. In its simplest form it is a combination of the ``local density approximation'' (LDA) and the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) approaches. Using numerically exact QMC solution to the effective DMFT multi-orbital quantum-impurity problem, a successful description of electronic structure and finite temperature magnetism of transition metals has been achieved. We discuss a simplified perturbation LDA+DMFT scheme which combines the T-matrix and fluctuation-excha…
The anisotropic two-orbital Hubbard model is investigated at low temperatures using high-precision quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations within dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We demonstrate that two distinct orbital-selective Mott transitions (OSMTs) occur for a bandwidth ratio of 2 even without spin-flip contributions to the Hund exchange, and we quantify numerical errors in earlier QMC data which had obscured the second transition. The limit of small inter-orbital coupling is introduced via a new generalized Hamiltonian and studied using QMC and Potthoff's self-energy functional method,…
We propose to combine the Trotter decomposition and a series expansion of the partition function for Hund's exchange coupling in a quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) algorithm for multiorbital systems that preserves spin and orbital rotational symmetries. This enables us to treat the Hund's (spin-flip and pair-hopping) terms, which is difficult in the conventional QMC method. To demonstrate this, we first apply the algorithm to study ferromagnetism in the two-orbital Hubbard model within the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The result reveals that the preservation of the SU(2) symmetry in Hund's exc…
The metal-insulator transition (MIT) in paramagnetic VO2 is studied within LDA+DMFT(IPT), which merges the local density approximation (LDA) with dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). With a fixed value of the Coulomb U=5.0eV, we show how the MIT is understood in a new picture: spectral weight transfer accompanying the increase in the displacement of V ion ($\perp c$) within the strong correlation scenario. Within this new scenario, we find good quantitative agreement with (i) switch of the orbital occupation of (xy,yz+zx,yz-zx), (ii) thermodynamics, and (iii) the one-electron spectral function …
We propose a fast multi-orbital impurity solver for the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). Our DMFT solver is based on the equations of motion (EOM) for local Green's functions and constructed by generalizing from the single-orbital case to the multi-orbital case with inclusion of the inter-orbital hybridizations and applying a mean field approximation to the inter-orbital Coulomb interactions. The two-orbital Hubbard model is studied using this impurity solver within a large range of parameters. The Mott metal-insulator transition and the quasiparticle peak are well described. A comparison o…
The electronic spectrum, energy gap and local magnetic moment of paramagnetic NiO are computed by using the local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). To this end the noninteracting Hamiltonian obtained within the local density approximation (LDA) is expressed in Wannier functions basis, with only the five anti-bonding bands with mainly Ni 3d character taken into account. Complementing it by local Coulomb interactions one arrives at a material-specific many-body Hamiltonian which is solved by DMFT together with quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) simulations. The large insu…
The merger of density-functional theory in the local density approximation (LDA) and many-body dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) allows for an ab initio calculation of Ce including the inherent 4f electronic correlations. We solve the DMFT equations by the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) technique and calculate the Ce energy, spectrum, and double occupancy as a function of volume. At low temperatures, the correlation energy exhibits an anomalous region of negative curvature which drives the system towards a thermodynamic instability, i.e., the $γ$-to-$α$ volume collapse, consistent with experiment.…
We investigate the Hubbard model on the triangular lattice at half-filling using the dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) and dual fermion (DF) methods in combination with continuous-time quantum Monte carlo (CT QMC) and semiclassical approximation (SCA) methods. We study the one-particle properties and nearest-neighbor spin correlations using the DCA method. We calculate the spectral functions using the CT QMC and SCA methods. The spectral function in the SCA and obtained by analytic continuation of the Pade approximation in CT QMC are in good agreement. We determine the metal-insulator tran…
We assess the reliability of the one-crossing approximation (OCA) approach in quantitative description of the Mott transition in the framework of the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The OCA approach has been applied in the conjunction with DMFT to a number of heavy-fermion, actinide, transition metal compounds, and nanoscale systems. However, several recent studies in the framework of impurity models pointed out to serious deficiencies of OCA and raised questions regarding its reliability. Here we consider a single band Hubbard model on the Bethe lattice at finite temperatures and compare …
In this work, we investigate models for bulk, bi- and multilayers containing half-metallic ferromagnets (HMFs), at zero and at finite temperature, in order to elucidate the effects of strong electronic correlations on the spectral properties (density of states). Our focus is on the evolution of the finite-temperature many-body induced tails in the half-metallic gap. To this end, the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) is employed. For the bulk, a Bethe lattice model is solved using a matrix product states based impurity solver at zero temperature and a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo (CT-QM…
LDA+DMFT is a novel computational technique for ab initio investigations of real materials with strongly correlated electrons, such as transition metals and their oxides. It combines the strength of conventional band structure theory in the local density approximation (LDA) with a modern many-body approach, the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). In the last few years LDA+DMFT has proved to be a powerful tool for the realistic modeling of strongly correlated electronic systems. In this paper the basic ideas and the set-up of the LDA+DMFT(X) approach, where X is the method used to solve the DMF…
The degrees of freedom that confer to strongly correlated systems their many intriguing properties also render them fairly intractable through typical perturbative treatments. For this reason, the mechanisms responsible for these technologically promising properties remain mostly elusive. Computational approaches have played a major role in efforts to fill this void. In particular, dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) and its cluster extension, the dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) have allowed significant progress. However, despite all the insightful results of these embedding schemes, comp…
By combining the local density approximation (LDA) with dynamical mean field theory (DMFT), we report a systematic analysis of the spectral properties of $δ$-plutonium with varying $5f$ occupancy. The LDA Hamiltonian is extracted from a tight-binding (TB) fit to full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave (FP-LAPW) calculations. The DMFT equations are solved by the exact quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method and the Hubbard-I approximation. We have shown for the first time the strong sensitivity of the spectral properties to the $5f$ occupancy, which suggests using this occupancy as a fitting pa…
Superconductivity in hole-doped Li_xNbO_2 has been reported with T_c ~ 5 K in the range 0.45 < x < 0.8. The electronic structure is based on a two-dimensional triangular Nb lattice. The strong trigonal crystal field results in a single Nb d(z^2) band isolated within a wide gap, leading to a single-band triangular lattice system. The isolated, partially filled band has a width W=1.5 eV with dominant second neighbor hopping. To identify possible correlation effects, we apply DMFT(QMC) using on-site Coulomb repulsion U=0-3 eV, and check selected results using determinant QMC. For U as small as 1 …
Local density approximation (LDA) to the density functional theory (DFT) has continuous derivative of total energy as a number of electrons function and continuous exchange-correlation potential, while in exact DFT both should be discontinuous as number of electrons goes through an integer value. We propose orbital densities functional (ODF) (with orbitals defined as Wannier functions) that by construction obeys this discontinuity condition. By its variation one-electron equations are obtained with potential in the form of projection operator. The operator increases a separation between occupi…
Rutile ($R$) phase VO$_2$ is a quintessential example of a strongly correlated bad-metal, which undergoes a metal-insulator transition (MIT) concomitant with a structural transition to a V-V dimerized monoclinic phase below T$_{MIT} \sim 340K$. It has been experimentally shown that one can control this transition by doping VO$_2$. In particular, doping with oxygen vacancies ($V_O$) has been shown to completely suppress this MIT {\em without} any structural transition. We explain this suppression by elucidating the influence of oxygen-vacancies on the electronic-structure of the metallic $R$ ph…
