We present first principles calculations of the atomic and electronic structure of electron-doped LaOFeAs. We find that whereas the undoped compound has an antiferromagnetic arrangement of magnetic moments at the Fe atoms, the doped system becomes non magnetic at a critical electron concentration. We have studied the electron-phonon interaction in the doped paramagnetic phase. For the $A_{1g}$ phonon, the separation between the As and Fe planes induces a non-collinear arrangement of the Fe magnetic moments. This arrangement is anti parallel for interactions mediated by As, and perpendicular for Fe-Fe direct interactions, thus avoiding frustration. This coupling of magnetism with vibrations induces anharmonicities and an electron-phonon interaction much larger than in the pure paramagnetic case. We propose that such enhanced interactions play an essential role in superconducting compounds close to an atiferromagnetic phase transition.
Superconductivity in hole-doped (Sr$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$
We study how manifestations of strong electron-phonon interaction (EPI) depend on the carrier concentration by solving the two-dimensional Holstein model for the spin-polarized fermions using an approximation free bold-line diagrammatic Monte Carlo (BDMC) method. We show that the strong EPI, obviously present at very small Fermion concentration, is masked by the Fermi blockade effects and Migdal's theorem to the extent that it manifests itself as moderate one at large carriers densities. Suppression of strong EPI fingerprints is in agreement with experimental observations in doped high tempera…

Measurements of the thermal Hall conductivity in hole-doped cuprates have shown that phonons acquire chirality in a magnetic field, both in the pseudogap phase and in the Mott insulator state. The microscopic mechanism at play is still unclear. A number of theoretical proposals are being considered, including skew scattering of phonons by various defects, the coupling of phonons to spins, and a state of loop-current order with the appropriate symmetries, but more experimental information is required to constrain theoretical scenarios. Here we present our study of the thermal Hall conductivity …

We present a neutron scattering study of phonons in single crystals of (Pb$_{0.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$)$_{1-x}$In$_x$Te with $x=0$ (metallic, but nonsuperconducting) and $x=0.2$ (nonmetallic normal state, but superconducting). We map the phonon dispersions (more completely for $x=0$) and find general consistency with theoretical calculations, except for the transverse and longitudinal optical (TO and LO) modes at the Brillouin zone center. At low temperature, both modes are strongly damped but sit at a finite energy ($\sim4$ meV in both samples), shifting to higher energy at room temperature. These mode…
We use first-principles methods to study doped strong ferroelectrics (taking BaTiO$_3$ as a prototype). Here we find a strong coupling between itinerant electrons and soft polar phonons in doped BaTiO$_3$, contrary to Anderson/Blount's weakly coupled electron mechanism for "ferroelectric-like metals". As a consequence, across a polar-to-centrosymmetric phase transition in doped BaTiO$_3$, the total electron-phonon coupling is increased to about 0.6 around the critical concentration, which is sufficient to induce phonon-mediated superconductivity of about 2 K. Lowering the crystal symmetry of d…
Insight into why superconductivity in pristine and doped monolayer graphene seems strongly suppressed has been central for the recent years' various creative approaches to realize superconductivity in graphene and graphene-like systems. We provide further insight by studying electron-phonon coupling and superconductivity in doped monolayer graphene and hexagonal boron nitride based on intrinsic phonon modes. Solving the graphene gap equation using a detailed model for the effective attraction based on electron tight binding and phonon force constant models, the various system parameters can be…
Anomalous phonon redshift in K-doped BaFe2As2 iron pnictides
Inelastic neutron scattering has been used to study the in-plane Cu-O bond-stretching mode in oxygen doped La$_{1.94}$Sr$_{0.06}$CuO$_{4.035}$ ($T_c = 38\,\text{K}$) and La$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ ($T_c = 43\,\text{K}$). Similar to results from optimally doped La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$ ($T_c = 35\,\text{K}$), we observe anomalous features in the dispersion of this half-breathing mode in the form of a softening halfway through the Brillouin Zone. Considering the differences in electronic structure and local environment between the oxygen- and strontium-doped compounds with similar $T_\text{c}$, we r…
The soft ferro-electric phonon in SrTiO3 observed with optical spectroscopy has an extraordinary strong spectral weight which is much stronger than expected in the limit of a perfectly ionic compound. The "charged phonon" in SrTiO3 is caused by the close-to-covalent character of the Ti-O ionic bond and implies a strong coupling between the soft ferro-electric phonon and the inter band transitions across the 3 eV gap of SrTiO3. We demonstrate that this coupling leads, in addition to the charged phonon effect, to a pairing interaction involving the exchange of two transverse optical phonons. Thi…

Quantitative Determination of Eliashberg Function and Evidence of Strong Electron Coupling with Multiple Phonon Modes in Heavily Over doped (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CuO6
The microscopic understanding of high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates has been hindered by the apparent complexity of crystal structures in these materials. We used scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to study an electron-doped copper oxide compound Sr$_{1-x}$Nd$_x$CuO$_2$ that has only bare cations separating the CuO$_2$ planes and thus the simplest infinite-layer structure among all cuprate superconductors. Tunneling conductance spectra of the major CuO$_2$ planes in the superconducting state revealed direct evidence for a nodeless pairing gap, regardless of variation of…
