We report high pressure powder synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies on MFe2As2 (M=Ba, Ca) over a range of temperatures and pressures up to about 56 GPa using a membrane diamond anvil cell. A phase transition to a collapsed tetragonal phase is observed in both compounds upon compression. However, at 300 (33) K in the Ba-compound the transition occurs at 26 (29) GPa, which is a much higher pressure than 1.7 (0.3) GPa at 300 (40) K in the Ca-compound, due to its larger volume. It is important to note that the transition in both compounds occurs when they are compressed to almost the same value of the unit cell volume and attain similar ct/at ratios. We also show that the FeAs4 tetrahedra are much less compressible and more distorted in the collapsed tetragonal phase than their nearly regular shape in the ambient pressure phase. We present a detailed analysis of the pressure dependence of the structures as well as equation of states in these important BaFe2As2 and CaFe2As2 compounds.
We report systematic investigation of high pressure crystal structures and structural phase transition upto 46 GPa in CaFeAsF and 40 GPa in SrFeAsF at 40 K using powder synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments and Rietveld analysis of the diffraction data. We find that CaFeAsF undergoes orthorhombic to monoclinic phase transition at Pc = 13.7 GPa while increasing pressure. SrFeAsF exhibits coexistence of orthorhombic and monoclinic phases over a large pressure range from 9 to 39 GPa. The coexistence of the two phases indicates that the transition is of first order in nature. Unlike in the 122…
The only alkali metal known to be superconducting at ambient pressure is Li at 0.4 mK. Under 30 GPa pressure \textit{T}$_{c}$ for Li rises to 14 K. In addition, nearly 50 years ago the heavy alkali metal Cs was reported to become superconducting near 1.3 K at 12 GPa. In the present experiment the superconductivity of Cs under pressure is confirmed. In addition, strong evidence is presented in electrical resistivity measurements that neighboring Rb also becomes superconducting near 2 K at 55 GPa as it enters the \textit{oC}16 phase, as for Cs, where \textit{T}$_{c}$ decreases under the applicat…
A15 Nb$_3$Si is, until now, the only high temperature superconductor produced at high pressure (~110 GPa) that has been successfully brought back to room pressure conditions in a metastable condition. Based on the current great interest in trying to create metastable-at-room-pressure high temperature superconductors produced at high pressure, we have restudied explosively compressed A15 Nb$_3$Si and its production from tetragonal Nb$_3$Si. First, diamond anvil cell pressure measurements up to 88 GPa were performed on explosively compressed A15 Nb$_3$Si material to trace Tc as a function of pre…
The dependence of the superconducting transition temperature Tc of CaC6 has been determined as a function of hydrostatic pressure in both helium-loaded gas and diamond-anvil cells to 0.6 and 32 GPa, respectively. Following an initial increase at the rate +0.39(1) K/GPa, Tc drops abruptly from 15 K to 4 K at 10 GPa. Synchrotron x-ray measurements to 15 GPa point to a structural transition near 10 GPa from a rhombohedral to a higher symmetry phase.
The dependence of Tc on nearly hydrostatic pressure has been measured for an isotopically pure (11B) MgB2 sample in a helium-loaded diamond-anvil-cell to nearly 20 GPa. Tc decreases monotonically with pressure from 39.1 K at ambient pressure to 20.9 K at 19.2 GPa. The initial dependence is the same as that obtained earlier (dTc/dP = -1.11(2) K/GPa) on the same sample in a He-gas apparatus to 0.7 GPa. The observed pressure dependence Tc(P) to 20 GPa can be readily described in terms of simple lattice stiffening within standard phonon-mediated BCS superconductivity.
We report the pressure dependence of the structural parameters of the non-oxide perovskite superconductor MgCNi$_{3}$ up to 32 GPa using a diamond anvil cell and synchrotron x-rays at room temperature. The structure of the compound remains in the Pm-3m cubic symmetry throughout the pressure range. The bulk modulus $B_{0}=156.9\pm0.2$GPa with $B_{0}^{\prime}=9.8$obtained by fitting the pressure-volume data is in good agreement with theoretical calculations reported earlier. An anomalous shift of the (111) and (200) lines observed above 9 GPa indicates a possible local short range distortion tha…
Pressure dependence of the electronic and crystal structures of K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_{2}$, which has pressure-induced two superconducting domes of SC I and SC II, was investigated by x-ray emission spectroscopy and diffraction. X-ray diffraction data show that compressibility along the c-axis changes around 12 GPa, where a new superconducting phase of SC II appears. This suggests a possible tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal phase transition. X-ray emission spectroscopy data also shows the change in the electronic structure around 12 GPa. These results can be explained by the scenario that the…
Crystal structure searching and ab initio calculations have been used here to explore low-energy structures of boron carbides under high pressure. Under pressures of 85-110 GPa, a metastable B6C with R-3m symmetry is found to be energetically more stable than the mixture of previous B4C and elemental boron. This B6C is a rhombohedral structure and contains mooncake-like B24 clusters with stuffing of C2 pairs. The mechanical and dynamical stabilities of this structure at ambient pressure are confirmed by its elastic constants and phonon dispersions. The bulk modulus and shear modulus of this ne…
We measured the electrical resistivity, $\varrho(T)$, of superconducting CaC$\_6$ at ambient and high pressure up to 16 GPa. For $P \leq$8 GPa, we found a large increase of $T\_c$ with pressure from 11.5 up to 15.1 K. At 8 GPa, $T\_c$ drops and levels off at 5 K above 10 GPa. Correspondingly, the residual $\varrho$ increases by $\approx$ 200 times and the $\varrho(T)$ behavior becomes flat. The recovery of the pristine behavior after depressurization is suggestive of a phase transition at 8 GPa between two superconducting phases with good and bad metallic properties, the latter with a lower $T…
Synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy have been used to study chemical reactions of molecular hydrogen (H2) with sulfur (S) at high pressures. We find theoretically predicted Cccm and Im-3m H3S to be the reaction products at 50 and 140 GPa, respectively. Im-3m H3S is a stable crystalline phase above 140 GPa and it transforms to R3m H3S on pressure release below 140 GPa. The latter phase is (meta)stable down to at least 70 GPa where it transforms to Cccm H3S upon annealing (T<1300 K) to overcome the kinetic hindrance. Cccm H3S has an extended structure with symmetric hydrogen bon…
BaFe2Se3 is a potential superconductor material exhibiting transition at 11 K and ambient pressure. Here we extended the structural and performed electrical resistivity measurements on this compound up to 51 GPa and 20 GPa, respectively, in order to distinguish if the superconductivity in this sample is intrinsic to the BaFe2Se3 phase or if it is originating from minor FeSe impurities that show a similar superconductive transition temperature. The electrical resistance measurements as a function of pressure show that at 5 GPa the superconducting transition is observed at around 10 K, similar t…
The recent-discovered Sr$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ superconductor provides an alternative and ideal material base for investigating possible topological superconductivity. Here, we report that in Sr$_{0.065}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_3$, the ambient superconducting phase is gradually depressed upon the application of external pressure. At high pressure, a second superconducting phase emerges at above 6 GPa, with a maximum $T_c$ value of $\sim$8.3 K. The joint investigations of the high-pressure synchrotron x-ray diffraction and electrical transport properties reveal that the re-emergence of superconductivity in Sr$_{…
The lutetium dihydride LuH2 is stable at ambient conditions. Here we show that its color undergoes sequential changes from dark blue at ambient pressure to pink at ~2.2 GPa and then to bright red at ~4 GPa upon compression in a diamond anvil cell. Such a pressure-induced color change in LuH2 is reversible and it is very similar to that recently reported in the N-doped lutetium hydride. However, our preliminary resistance measurements on LuH2 under pressures up to 7.7 GPa evidenced no superconductivity down to 1.5 K.

Synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments have been carried out on Eu metal at ambient temperature to pressures as high as 92 GPa (0.92 Mbar). Following the well-known bcc-to-hcp transition at 12 GPa, a mixed phase region is observed from 18 to 66 GPa until finally a single orthorhombic (Pnma) phase persists from 66 to 92 GPa. These results are compared to predictions from density functional theory calculations. Under pressure the relatively large molar volume Vmol of divalent Eu is rapidly diminished, equaling or falling below Vmol(P) for neighboring trivalent lanthanides above 15 GPa. The pr…
High-pressure magnetization, structural and 57Fe Mössbauer studies were performed on superconducting Rb0.8Fe1.6Se2.0 with Tc = 32.4 K. The superconducting transition temperature gradually decreases on increasing pressure up to 5.0 GPa followed by a marked step-like suppression of superconductivity near 6 GPa. No structural phase transition in the Fe vacancy-ordered superstructure is observed in synchrotron XRD studies up to 15.6 GPa, while the Mössbauer spectra above 5 GPa reveal the appearance of a new paramagnetic phase and significant changes in the magnetic and electronic properties of the…
The electron-doped high-transition-temperature (T_c) iron-based pnictide superconductor LaFeAsO_{1-x}H_x has a unique phase diagram: superconducting (SC) double domes are sandwiched by antiferromagnetic phases at ambient pressure and they turn to a single dome with a maximum T_c that exceeds 45K at a pressure of 3.0 GPa. We studied whether spin fluctuations are involved in increasing T_c under a pressure of 3.0 GPa by using ^{75}As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique. The ^{75}As-NMR results for the powder samples show that T_c increases up to 48 K without the influence of spin fluctuat…
The recent discovery of superconductivity in heavy Fermion compound UTe2, a candidate topological and triplet-paired superconductor, has aroused widespread interest. However, to date, there is no consensus on whether the stoichiometric sample of UTe2 is superconducting or not due to lack of reliable evidence to distinguish the difference between the nominal and real compositions of samples. Here, we are the first to clarify that the stoichiometric UT2 is non-superconducting at ambient pressure and under hydrostatic pressure up to 6 GPa, however we find that it can be compressed into supercondu…
Transport and magnetic studies of PbTaSe$_2$ under pressure suggest existence of two superconducting phases with the low temperature phase boundary at $\sim 0.25$ GPa that is defined by a very sharp, first order, phase transition. The first order phase transition line can be followed via pressure dependent resistivity measurements, and is found to be near 0.12 GPa near room temperature. Transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction at elevated temperatures confirm that this first order phase transition is structural and occurs at ambient pressure near $\sim 425$ K. The new, high tempe…
We have determined the crystal structures and superconducting transition temperatures of La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4 under nearly hydrostatic pressures in diamond anvil cells to 5.0 GPa and 19.0 GPa, respectively. Synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction measurements were used to establish the pressure-temperature structural phase diagram. Under pressure the superconducting transition temperature increases rapidly from Tc = 3 K to a maximum value of 22 K at 5 GPa, a pressure slightly greater than that required to stabilize the undistorted I4/mmm structure in the superconducting state. Increasing the pre…
The structural properties of EuCo2As2 have been studied up to 35 GPa, through the use of x-ray diffraction in a diamond anvil cell at a synchrotron source. At ambient conditions, EuCo2As2 (I4/mmm) has a tetragonal lattice structure with a bulk modulus of 48 +/-4 GPa. With the application of pressure, the a-axis exhibits negative compressibility with a concurrent sharp decrease in c-axis length. The anomalous compressibility of the a-axis continues until 4.7 GPa, at which point the structure undergoes a second-order phase transition to a collapsed tetragonal (CT) state with a bulk modulus of 11…
We synthesized two C-S-H compounds from a mixture of carbon and sulfur in hydrogen and from sulfur in mixed methane-hydrogen fluids at 4 GPa. X-ray synchrotron single-crystal diffraction and Raman spectroscopy have been applied to these samples up to 58 and 143 GPa, respectively. Both samples show a similar Al2Cu type I4/mcm basic symmetry, while the hydrogen subsystem evolves with pressure via variously ordered molecular and extended modifications. The methane bearing sample lowers symmetry to an orthorhombic Pnma structure after laser heating to 1400 K at 143 GPa. The results suggest that su…
The crystal structure and electrical resistance of the structurally-layered EuFe2As2 have been studied up to 70 GPa and down to temperature of 10 K, using a synchrotron x-ray source and the designer diamond anvils. The room-temperature compression of the tetragonal phase of EuFe2As2 (I4/mmm) results in an increase in the a-axis and a rapid decrease in c-axis with increasing pressure. This anomalous compression reaches a maximum at 8 GPa and the tetragonal lattice behaves normal above 10 GPa with a nearly constant c/a axial ratio. The rapid rise in superconducting transition temperature (Tc) to…
Transition metal dichalcogenides host a wide variety of lattice and electronic structures, as well as corresponding exotic physical properties, especially under certain tuning conditions. Here, we are the first to report the observation of pressure-induced three superconducting transitions in TaTe2, a charge density wave (CDW) - bearing layered transition-metal dichalcogenide that is metallic but not superconducting at ambient pressure. We find that its CDW state can be easily suppressed upon increasing pressure up to ~ 1 GPa. A superconducting state then emerges from the suppressed CDW state …
The dependence of Tc for MgB2 on purely hydrostatic or nearly hydrostatic pressure has been determined to 23 GPa for single-crystalline and to 32 GPa for polycrystalline samples, and found to be in good agreement. Tc decreases from 39 K at ambient pressure to 15 K at 32 GPa with an initial slope dTc/dP = -1.11(2) K/GPa. Evidence is presented that the differing values of dTc/dP reported in the literature result primarily from shear-stress effects in nonhydrostatic pressure media and not differences in the samples. Although comparison of these results with theory supports phonon-mediated superco…
We studied the evolution of superconductivity (sc) and antiferromagnetism (afm) in the heavy fermion compound CePt_3Si with hydrostatic pressure. We present a pressure-temperature phase diagram established by electrical transport measurements. Pressure shifts the superconducting transition temperature, T_c, to lower temperatures. Antiferromagnetism is suppressed at a critical pressure P_c=0.5 GPa.
High-pressure electrical resistivity measurements reveal that the mechanical deformation of ultra-hard WB2 during compression induces superconductivity above 50 GPa with a maximum superconducting critical temperature, Tc of 17 K at 90 GPa. Upon further compression up to 190 GPa, the Tc gradually decreases. Theoretical calculations show that electron-phonon mediated superconductivity originates from the formation of metastable stacking faults and twin boundaries that exhibit a local structure resembling MgB2} (hP3, space group 191, prototype AlB2). Synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements up …
The newly discovered superconductor FeSe1-x (x=0.08, Tconset=13.5 K at ambient pressure rising to 27 K at 1.48 GPa) exhibits a structural phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic below 70 K at ambient pressure - the crystal structure in the superconducting state shows remarkable similarities to that of the REFeAsO1-xFx (RE = rare earth) superconductors
We report the effect of high pressure on the superconducting, vortex pinning, and structural properties of a polycrystalline non-centrosymmetric superconductor Re6Hf. The superconducting transition temperature, Tc, reveals a modest decrease as pressure P increases with a slope -0.046 K/GPa (-0.065 K/GPa) estimated from resistivity measurements up to 8 GPa (magnetization measurement ~ 1.1 GPa). Structural analysis up to ~18 GPa reveals monotonic decreases of lattice constant without undergoing any structural transition and a high value of bulk modulus B0= 333.63 GPa, indicating the stability of…
The rich phenomena in the FeSe and related compounds have attracted great interests as it provides fertile material to gain further insight into the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity. A natural follow-up work was to look into the possibility of superconductivity in MnSe. It was shown that MnP becomes superconducting with Tc ~ 1 K under pressure. We demonstrated in this work that high pressure can effectively suppress the complex magnetic characters of MnSe crystal when observed at ambient condition. MnSe under pressure is found to undergo several structural transformations: the c…
Quasi-two-dimensional kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) have attracted much recent interest due to exotic quantum phenomena such as unconventional superconductivity, topological charge order and giant anomalous Hall effect. Here we report pressure-induced reemergent superconductivity in CsV3Sb5 by electrical transport measurements under high pressures up to 47.9 GPa. We show that the superconducting critical temperature Tc is first enhanced by pressure and reaches its first maximum ~ 8.9 K at 0.8 GPa, then the Tc is suppressed by pressure and cannot be detected above 7.5 GPa, forming a …
Polycrystalline HfPd2Al has been synthesized using the arc-melting method and studied under ambient pressure conditions by x-ray diffraction from room temperature up to 450^oC. High pressure x-ray diffraction up to 23 GPa was also performed using Diacell-type membrane diamond anvil cells. The estimated linear thermal expansion coefficient was found to be α = 1.40(3)x10^{-5} K^{-1}, and the bulk modulus derived from the fit to the 3rd order Birch-Murnaghan EOS (BMEOS) is B0 = 97(2) GPa. Resistivity studies under applied pressure (p < 7.49 GPa) showed a linear decrease of superconducting critica…
The kagome metal KV$_3$Sb$_5$ hosts charge order, topologically nontrivial Dirac band crossings, and a superconducting ground state with unconventional characteristics, providing an ideal platform to investigate the interplay between different electronic states on the kagome lattice. Here we study the evolution of charge order and superconductivity in KV$_3$Sb$_5$ under hydrostatic pressure using electrical resistivity measurements. With the application of pressure, the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}=0.9$ K under ambient pressure quickly increases to 3.1 K at $p=0.4$ GPa, as…
Candidates for new thermoelectric and superconducting materials, which have narrow band gap and flat bands near band edges, were searched by the high-throughput first-principles calculation from an inorganic materials database. The synthesized SnBi$_2$Se$_4$ among the target compounds showed a narrow band gap of 354 meV, and a thermal conductivity of 1 W/Km at ambient pressure. The sample SnBi$_2$Se$_4$ showed a metal-insulator transition at 11.1 GPa, as predicted by a theoretical estimation. Furthermore, the two pressure-induced superconducting transitions were discovered at under 20.2 GPa an…
We report on the impact of hydrostatic pressure on the superconductivity of optimally (Indium) doped SnTe which is established to be derived from a topological crystalline insulating phase. Single crystals of Sn1-xInxTe were synthesized by a modified Bridgman method that exhibited maximum superconducting Tc of 4.4 K for x= 0.5. Hydrostatic pressure upto 2.5 GPa was applied on the crystals of Sn0.5In0.5Te and electrical resistivity as a function of temperature and pressure was measured. We observed decrease in onset superconducting transition temperature from 4.4 K to 2.8 K on increasing pressu…
The structural properties of LaRu$_2$P$_2$ under external pressure have been studied up to 14 GPa, employing high-energy x-ray diffraction in a diamond-anvil pressure cell. At ambient conditions, LaRu$_2$P$_2$ (I4/mmm) has a tetragonal structure with a bulk modulus of $B=105(2)$ GPa and exhibits superconductivity at $T_c= 4.1$ K. With the application of pressure, LaRu$_2$P$_2$ undergoes a phase transition to a collapsed tetragonal (cT) state with a bulk modulus of $B=175(5)$ GPa. At the transition, the c-lattice parameter exhibits a sharp decrease with a concurrent increase of the a-lattice pa…
Recently, Pei et al. (arXiv2105.13250) reported that ambient pressure $β$-MoB$_2$ exhibits a phase transition to $α$-MoB$_2$ (space group: $P6/mmm$) at pressure P~70 GPa and this high-pressure phase is a high-temperature superconductor exhibited $T_c=32 K$ at P~110 GPa. Despite $α$-MoB$_2$ has the same crystalline structure as ambient pressure MgB$_2$2 and the $T_c$'s of $α$-MoB$_2$ and MgB$_2$ are very close, the first principles calculations showed that in $α$-MoB$_2$ the states near the Fermi level, $ε_F$, are dominated by the $d$-electrons of Mo atoms, while in MgB$_2$ the $p$-orbitals of …
In this work, we synthesize and investigate lower technetium hydrides at pressures up to 45 GPa using the synchrotron X-ray diffraction, reflectance spectroscopy, and ab initio calculations. In the Tc-H system, the hydrogen content in TcH$_x$ phases increases when the pressure rises, and at 27 GPa we found a new hexagonal (hcp) nonstoichiometric hydride TcH$_{1.3}$. The formation of technetium hydrides is also confirmed by the emergence of a new reflective band at 450-600 nm in the reflectance spectra of TcH$_x$ samples synthesized at 45 GPa. On the basis of the theoretical analysis, we propos…
We have synthesized two iron-pnictide/chalcogenide materials, CuFeTe2 and Fe2As, which share crystallographic features with known iron-based superconductors, and carried out high-pressure electrical resistivity measurements on these materials to pressures in excess of 30 GPa. Both compounds crystallize in the Cu2Sb-type crystal structure that is characteristic of LiFeAs (with CuFeTe2 exhibiting a disordered variant). At ambient pressure, CuFeTe2 is a semiconductor and has been suggested to exhibit a spin-density-wave transition, while Fe2As is a metallic antiferromagnet. The electrical resisti…
Among the family of TMDs, ReS2 takes a special position, which crystalizes in a unique distorted low-symmetry structure at ambient conditions. The interlayer interaction in ReS2 is rather weak, thus its bulk properties are similar to that of monolayer. However, how does compression change its structure and electronic properties is unknown so far. Here using ab initio crystal structure searching techniques, we explore the high-pressure phase transitions of ReS2 extensively and predict two new high-pressure phases. The ambient pressure phase transforms to a "distorted-1T" structure at very low p…
High-pressure structural searches of superhydrides CeBeH$_8$ and CeBH$_8$ were performed under ambient pressure up to 300 GPa. We identify $Fm\overline{3}m$-CeBeH$_8$ with a superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ of 56 K at 10 GPa. Two more phases with spacegroup $R\overline{3}m$ and $C2/m$, were investigated within the increasing pressures. CeBH$_8$ shows a similar phase transition process as CeBeH$_8$ but with higher transition pressures and higher $T_c$. $Fm\overline{3}m$-CeBH$_8$ is predicted to be superconducting above 120 GPa with a maximum $T_{c}$ of 118 K at 150 GPa. $R\overlin…
We report the synthesis of a new quasi one-dimensional (1D) iron selenide. Ba9Fe3Se15 was synthesized at high temperature and high pressure of 5.5 GPa and systematically studied via structural, magnetic and transport measurements at ambient and at high-pressures. Ba9Fe3Se15 crystallizes in a monoclinic structure and consists of face-sharing FeSe6 octahedral chains along the c axis. At ambient pressure it exhibits an insulating behavior with a band gap ~460 meV and undergoes a ferrimagnet-like phase transition at 14 K. Under high pressure, a complete metallization occurs at ~29 GPa, which is ac…
At ambient pressure CaFe2As2 has been found to undergo a first order phase transition from a high temperature, tetragonal phase to a low temperature orthorhombic / antiferromagnetic phase upon cooling through T ~ 170 K. With the application of pressure this phase transition is rapidly suppressed and by ~ 0.35 GPa it is replaced by a first order phase transition to a low temperature collapsed tetragonal, non-magnetic phase. Further application of pressure leads to an increase of the tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal phase transition temperature, with it crossing room temperature by ~ 1.7 GPa. …
The structural and vibrational properties of phenanthrene are measured at high pressures up to 30.2 GPa by Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron x-ray diffraction techniques. Two phase transitions are observed in raman spectra under pressures of 2.3 GPa and 5.4 GPa with significant changes of intermolecular and intramolecular vibrational modes, and all the raman peaks disappeared in the luminesce background above 10.2 GPa. Upon further compression above 20.0 GPa, three broad bands are observed respectively around 1600, 2993 and 3181 cm$^{-1}$ in Raman spectra, strongly indicating that phenanthren…
Simultaneous high pressure x-ray diffraction and electrical resistance measurements have been carried out on a PbO type α-FeSe0.92 compound to a pressure of 44 GPa and temperatures down to 4 K using designer diamond anvils at synchrotron source. At ambient temperature, a structural phase transition from a tetragonal (P4/nmm) phase to an orthorhombic (Pbnm) phase is observed at 11 GPa and the Pbnm phase persists up to 74 GPa. The superconducting transition temperature (TC) increases rapidly with pressure reaching a maximum of ~28 K at ~ 6 GPa and decreases at higher pressures, disappearing comp…
We performed resistivity measurements in CuRh$_{2}$S$_{4}$ under quasi-hydrostatic pressure of up to 8.0 GPa, and found a pressure induced superconductor-insulator (SI) transition. Initially, with increasing pressure, the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ increases from 4.7 K at ambient pressure to 6.4 K at 4.0 GPa, but decreases at higher pressures. With further compression, superconductivity in CuRh$_{2}$S$_{4}$ disappears abruptly at a critical pressure $P_{\rm SI}$ between 5.0 and 5.6 GPa, when it becomes an insulator.
In the search for MgB2-like phonon-mediated superconductors we have carried out a systematic density functional theory study of the Ca-B system, isoelectronic to Mg-B, at ambient and gigapascal pressures. A remarkable variety of candidate high-pressure ground states have been identified with an evolutionary crystal structure search, including a stable alkaline-earth monoboride oI8-CaB, a superconductor with an expected critical temperature (Tc) of 5.5 K. We have extended our previous study of CaB6 [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 102501 (2012)] to nearby stoichiometries of CaB[6+x], finding that extra b…
The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the superconductivity in LiFeAs is investigated up to 1.8 GPa. The superconducting transition temperature, T_c, decreases linearly with pressure at a rate of 1.5 K/GPa. The negative pressure coefficient of T_c and the high ambient pressure T_c indicate that LiFeAs is the high-pressure analogue of the isoelectronic SrFe_2As_2 and BaFe_2As_2.
The pressure-induced phase transition of bismuth telluride, Bi2Te3, has been studied by synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements at room temperature using a diamond-anvil cell (DAC) with loading pressures up to 29.8 GPa. We found a high-pressure body-centered cubic (bcc) phase in Bi2Te3 at 25.2 GPa, which is denoted as phase IV, and this phase apperars above 14.5 GPa. Upon releasing the pressure from 29.8 GPa, the diffraction pattern changes with pressure hysteresis. The original rhombohedral phase is recovered at 2.43 GPa. The bcc structure can explain the phase IV peaks. We assumed that th…
Iron-chalcogenide superconductor Fe$_{1.03}$Se$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ has been investigated under high pressure using synchrotron based x-ray diffraction and mid-infrared reflectance measurements at room temperature. Pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature (T$_c$) of the same sample has been determined by temperature-dependent resistance measurements up to 10 GPa. Although the high pressure orthorhombic phase ($\textit{Pbnm}$) starts emerging at 4 GPa, structural transition becomes clearly observable above 10 GPa. A strong correlation is observed between the Fe(Se,Te)$_{4}…
Effects of pressure on the electronic structure, electron-phonon interaction, and superconductivity of the high entropy alloy (TaNb)$_{0.67}$(HfZrTi)$_{0.33}$ are studied in the pressure range 0 - 100 GPa. The electronic structure is calculated using the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method with the coherent potential approximation. Effects of pressure on the lattice dynamics are simulated using the Debye-Grüneisen model and the Grüneisen parameter at ambient conditions. In addition, the Debye temperature and Sommerfeld electronic heat capacity coefficient were experimentally determined. The electron…
