Recently, Pei et al. (arXiv2105.13250) reported that ambient pressure $β$-MoB$_2$ exhibits a phase transition to $α$-MoB$_2$ (space group: $P6/mmm$) at pressure P~70 GPa and this high-pressure phase is a high-temperature superconductor exhibited $T_c=32 K$ at P~110 GPa. Despite $α$-MoB$_2$ has the same crystalline structure as ambient pressure MgB$_2$2 and the $T_c$'s of $α$-MoB$_2$ and MgB$_2$ are very close, the first principles calculations showed that in $α$-MoB$_2$ the states near the Fermi level, $ε_F$, are dominated by the $d$-electrons of Mo atoms, while in MgB$_2$ the $p$-orbitals of boron atomic sheets dominantly contribute to the states near the $ε_F$. More recently, Hire et al. (arXiv2212.14869) reported that the $P6/mmm$-phase can be stabilized at ambient pressure in $Nb_{1-x}Mo_{x}B_{2}$ solid solutions, and these ternary alloys exhibit $T_c=8 K$. In addition, Pei et al. (Sci. China-Phys. Mech. Astron. 65, 287412 (2022)) showed that compressed WB$_2$ exhibits $T_c=15 K$ at P~121 GPa. Here, we analyzed experimental data reported for $P6/mmm$-phases of $Nb_{1-x}Mo_{x}B_{2}$ (x = 0.25; 1.0) and highly-compressed WB$_2$, and showed that these three phases exhibit $d$-wave superconductivity. We also deduced the gap-to-transition temperature ratio for these three phases. We found that $Nb_{0.75}Mo_{0.25}B_{2}$ exhibits high strength of nonadiabaticity, which is quantified by the ratio of $T_θ/T_F=3.5$, which is by one order of magnitude exceeds the ratio in MgB$_2$, $α$-MoB$_2$, WB$_2$, pnictides, cuprates, and highly-compressed hydrides.
Results of FLMTO-GGA (full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital -- generalized gradient approximation) calculations of the band structure and boron electric field gradients (EFG) for the new medium-T$_c$ superconductor (MTSC), MgB$_2$, and related diborides MB$_2$, M=Be, Al, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mo and Ta are reported. The boron EFG variations are found to be related to specific features of their band structure and particularly to the M-B hybridization. The strong charge anisotropy at the B site in MgB$_2$ is completely defined by the valence electrons - a property which sets MgB$_2$ apart from other…
Magnesium diboride crystals were grown with low melting alloy flux. The sample with superconductivity at 38.3 K was prepared in the zinc-magnesium flux and another sample with superconductivity at 34.11 K was prepared in the cadmium-magnesium flux. MgB4 was found in both samples, and MgB4's magnetization curve being above zero line had not superconductivity. Magnesium diboride prepared by these two methods is all flaky and irregular shape and low quality of single crystal. However, these two metals should be the optional flux for magnesium diboride crystal growth. The study of single crystal g…
The model of two (s and p) channel superconductivity known to be necessary to explain the superconductivity in MgB2 has been applied to the Al1-xMgxB2 diborides by tuning x from MgB2 to AlMgB4. The evolution of the interband coupling parameter (probing the strength of the interchannel pairing due to quantum interference effects) and the two gaps in the s and p channel as a function of x have been calculated. While in MgB2 the quantum interference effects give an amplification of Tc by a factor of 1.5 in comparison with the dominant intra s band single channel pairing, in AlMgB4 the amplificati…
We report variation of lattice structure in diborides (AB2) with different A atoms to identify the special case of MgB2 showing high Tc superconductivity. High purity MgB2 (Tc~39 K) has been prepared by direct reaction of the elements and the lattice parameters are measured by x-ray diffraction determining the strain e of the B-B distance. The results show that the superconductivity in these intermetallics appear near a critical point in a two variables (strain and charge density) phase diagram at (ec, rc).
Over the past 14 years MgB2 has gone from a startling discovery to a promising, applied superconductor. In this article we present a brief overview of the synthesis and the basic superconducting properties of this remarkable compound. In particular, the effects of pressure, substitutions and neutron irradiation on superconducting properties are discussed.
We report on syntheses and electron transport properties of polycrystalline samples of diborides (AB2) with different transition metals atoms (A=Zr,Nb,Ta). The temperature dependence of resistivity, ρ(T), and ac susceptibility of these samples reveal superconducting transition of ZrB2 with Tc=5.5 K, while NbB2 and TaB2 have been observed nonsuperconducting up to 0.37 K. Hc2(T) is linear in temperature below Tc, leading to a rather low Hc2(0)= 0.1 T. At T close to Tc, Hc2(T) demonstrates a downward curvature. We conclude that these diborides as well as MgB2 samples behaves like a simple metals …
Magnesium diboride has been thermally treated in the presence of Rb, Cs, and Ba. Magnetic susceptibility shows onsets of superconductivity in the resulting samples at 52K (Rb), 58K (Cs) and 45K (Ba). Room-temperature 11B NMR indicates to cubic symmetry of the electric field gradient at boron site for the samples reacted with Rb and Cs, in contrast to the axial symmetry in the initial MgB2 and in the sample treated with Ba.
It is well established that the superconductivity in the recently discovered superconducting compound MgB$_{2}$ resides in the quasi-two-dimensional band ($σ$-band) and three-dimensional band ($π$-band). We demonstrate that, due to such band structure, the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau theory practically does not have region of applicability, because gradient expansion in the $c$ direction breaks down. In the case of dirty $π$-band we derive the simplest equations which describe properties of such superconductors near $T_{c}$ and explore some consequences of these equations.
We report scanning tunneling spectroscopy imaging of the vortex lattice in single crystalline MgB2. By tunneling parallel to the c-axis, a single superconducting gap (Delta = 2.2 meV) associated with the pi-band is observed. The vortices in the pi-band have a large core size compared to estimates based on Hc2, and show an absence of localized states in the core. Furthermore, superconductivity between the vortices is rapidly suppressed by an applied field. These results suggest that superconductivity in the pi-band is, at least partially, induced by the intrinsically superconducting sigma-band.
We discuss the effects of hydrostatic pressure on the superconducting properties of MgB$_{2}$ within the framework of Eliashberg theory. By considering the pressure dependences of all parameters appearing in the McMillan formula, we show that the calculated pressure derivative of $T_{c}$ as well as the variation of $T_{c}$ with pressure are in good agreement with recent measurements. The pressure dependences of the energy gap $Δ_{0}$, the effective interaction strength $N(E_{F})v$, the critical magnetic field $H_{c}(0)$, and the electronic specific heat coefficient $γ$ are also predicted for t…
The electron-phonon interaction in magnesium diboride MgB_2 single crystals is investigated by point-contact (PC) spectroscopy. For the first time the electron coupling with E_2g phonon modes is resolved in the PC spectra. The correlation between intensity of the extremely broad E_2g modes in the PC spectra and value of the superconducting gap is established. Our observations favor current theoretical models for electron-phonon mediated superconductivity in MgB_2 and they better match the harmonic phonons model.
Recently it was discovered that, under elevated pressures, MoB$_2$ exhibits superconductivity at a critical temperature, $T_c$, as high as 32 K. The superconductivity appears to develop following a pressure-induced structural transition from the ambient pressure R$\bar{3}$m structure to an MgB$_2$-like P6/mmm structure. This suggests that remarkably high $T_c$ values among diborides are not restricted to MgB$_2$ as previously appeared to be the case, and that similarly high $T_c$ values may occur in other diborides if they can be coerced into the MgB$_2$ structure. In this paper, we show that …
Porous magnesium diboride samples have been prepared by the heat treatment of a pressed mixture of Mg and MgB2 powders. It was found that linked superconducting structure is formed down to the minimum normalized density gamma= d/do= 0.16 (percolation threshold), where d is the density of MgB2 averaged over the sample, do= 2.62 g/cm3 is the X-ray density. Lattice parameters and critical temperature of the porous sample decrease with increasing porosity (decreasing gamma) and Tc2= 32K is minimal at gamma= 0.16. The grain boundaries in the porous samples are transparent for the current and Jc~3.1…
We review investigations of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in metal diborides MeB_2 (Me=Zr, Nb, Ta, Mg) by point-contact (PC) spectroscopy. For transition metal compounds the PC EPI functions were recovered and EPI parameter $λ\lesssim 0.1$ were estimated. The data are consistent with the measured surface phonon dispersion curves. The low $λ$ value questions some reports about superconductivity in these compounds. Contrary, EPI in superconducting MgB_2 films manifests also in the PC spectra itself by virtue of an elastic EPI contribution to the excess current determined by the energy de…
We perform a high-throughput screening on phonon-mediated superconductivity in ternary metal diboride structure with alkali, alkaline earth, and transition metals. We find 17 ground states and 78 low-energy metastable phases. From fast calculations of zone-center electron-phonon coupling, 43 compounds are revealed to show electron-phonon coupling strength higher than that of MgB2. An anti-correlation between energetic stability and electron-phonon coupling strength is identified. We suggest two phases, i.e., Li3ZrB8 and Ca3YB8, to be synthesized, which show reasonable energetic stability and s…
First principles FLMTO-GGA electronic structure calculations of the new medium-$T_C$ superconductor (MTSC) $MgB_2$ and related diborides indicate that superconductivity in these compounds is related to the the existence of $p_{x,y}$-band holes at the $Γ$ point. Based on these calculations, we explain the absence of medium-$T_C$ superconductivity for $BeB_2$, $AlB_2$ $ScB_2$ and $YB_2$. The simulation of a number of $MgB_2$-based ternary systems using a supercell approach demonstrates that (i) the electron doping of $MgB_2$ (i.e., $MgB_{2-y}X_y$ with X=Be, C, N, O) and the creation of isoelectr…
The recently discovered superconductivity in MgB2 has captured world attention due to its simple crystal structure and relatively high superconducting transition temperature Tc=39K. It appears to be generally accepted that it is phonon-mediated s-wave BCS-like superconductivity. Surprisingly, the strongly temperature dependent anisotropy of the upper critical field, observed experimentally in magnesium diboride single crystals, is still lacking a consistent theoretical explanation. We propose a simple single-gap anisotropic s-wave order parameter in order to compare its implications with the p…
Two different hot isostatic pressing cycles (HIPing) were investigated to synthesize bulk MgB2 samples: a "standard" cycle where a low vessel pressure is maintained while heating to the process temperature with a subsequent simultaneous pressure and temperature decrease and a new method - dense material cooling under pressure (DMCUP). The latter method allowed the synthesis of dense samples with diameters up to 20 mm and thicknesses up to 10 mm from commercial MgB2 powder. Optimal conditions for the DMCUP method with glass encapsulation (maximum pressure 200 MPa, maximum temperature 1000 C ove…
Superconducting transition temperatures ($T_c$'s) of MgB$_2$, Mg$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$B$_2$, Mg$_{1-x}$Na$_x$B$_2$, and Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_x$B$_2$ are studied within the McMillan approximation using electronic and structural information obtained from density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation. The density of states and $T_c$ of MgB$_2$ are both shown to be extremely sensitive to volume; in fact the density of states around the Fermi level is found to rise with increasing volume because of a prominent van Hove peak. Doping the Mg sublattice with small amounts of either Ca, which…
Superconducting thin films of magnesium diboride (MgB$_2$) were prepared on MgO (001) substrate by a molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) method with the co-evaporation conditions of low deposition rate in ultra-high vacuum. The structural and physical properties of the films were studied by RHEED, XRD, XPS, resistivity and magnetization measurements. All films demonstrated superconductivity without use of any post-annealing process. The highest {\it T}$_{c,onset}$ determined by resistivity measurement was about 33K in the present samples.Anisotropic superconducting properties were evaluated by the resi…
Unlike the widely studied $s$-type two-gap superconductor MgB$_2$, the chemically similar compounds ZrB$_2$ and HfB$_2$ do not superconduct above 1 K. Yet, it has been shown that small amounts of self- or extrinsic doping (in particular with vanadium), can induce superconductivity in these materials. Based on results of different macro- and microscopic measurements, including magnetometry, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), resistivity, and muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR), we present a comparative study of Zr$_{0.96}$V$_{0.04}$B$_2$ and Hf$_{0.97}$V$_{0.03}$B$_2$. Their key magnetic and superconduct…
Magnesium diboride MgB2 has been an extraordinarily hot research topic since the discovery of superconductivity below 40 K, due to the vast amount of unusual properties originating from the involvement in superconductivity of two sets of bands that are of a different dimensionality. We review, with a strong focus on results obtained by torque magnetometry, how this leads to a complex behavior of the anisotropic superconducting state properties. The different dimensionality of the two sets of bands is manifested in the upper critical field Hc2 anisotropy, which was found to strongly decrease wi…
The discovery of superconductivity at 39 K in magnesium diboride offers the possibility of a new class of low-cost, high-performance superconducting materials for magnets and electronic applications. With twice the critical temperature of Nb_3Sn and four times that of Nb-Ti alloy, MgB_2 has the potential to reach much higher fields and current densities than either of these technological superconductors. A vital prerequisite, strongly linked current flow, has already been demonstrated even at this early stage. One possible drawback is the observation that the field at which superconductivity i…
The recent discovery of superconductivity up to 32 K in the pressurized MoB2 revives the interests in exploring novel superconductors in transition-metal diborides isostructural to MgB2. Although the Mo 4d-electrons participate in Cooper pairing, the electron-phonon coupling remains the dominant mechanism for the emergence of superconductivity in MoB2. To explore possible superconductivity driven by unconventional pairing mechanism, we turn our attention to an itinerant antiferromagnet CrB2. Here we report on the discovery of superconductivity up to 7 K in CrB2 via the application of external …
Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) was combined with heat capacity measurements to follow the change of superconductivity with systematic Al doping of MgB$_2$. By using x-ray diffraction and Vegard's law to assess the actual Al content in the samples, changes in behavior were found to be much more in agreement with theoretical predictions than in earlier studies. EELS data show that $σ$-band hole states disappear above 33% Al, approximately the composition at which the $σ$ band Fermi surface is predicted to lose its cylindrical shape in reciprocal space and break apart into ellipsoidal p…
