Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and series expansion (SE) data for the energy, specific heat, magnetization and susceptibility of the ferromagnetic 4-state Potts model on the square lattice are analyzed in a vicinity of the critical point in order to estimate universal combinations of critical amplitudes. The quality of the fits is improved using predictions of the renormalization group (RG) approach and of conformal invariance, and restricting the data within an appropriate temperature window.
The RG predictions on the cancelation of the logarithmic corrections in the universal amplitude ratios are tested. A direct calculation of the effective ratio of the energy amplitudes using duality relations explicitly demonstrates this cancelation of logarithms, thus supporting the predictions of RG.
We emphasize the role of corrections of background terms on the determination of the amplitudes. The ratios of the critical amplitudes of the susceptibilities obtained in our analysis differ significantly from those predicted theoretically and supported by earlier SE and MC analysis. This disagreement might signal that the two-kink approximation used in the analytical estimates is not sufficient to describe with fair accuracy the amplitudes of the 4-state model.
Monte Carlo simulations and series expansion data for the energy, specific heat, magnetization and susceptibility of the 3-state Potts model on the square lattice are analyzed in the vicinity of the critical point in order to estimate universal combinations of critical amplitudes.
Monte Carlo and series expansion data for the energy, specific heat, magnetisation and susceptibility of the 4-state Potts model in the vicinity of the critical point are analysed. The role of logarithmic corrections is discussed. Estimates of universal ratios A_+/A_-, $Γ_+/Γ_L$, $Γ_T/Γ_L$ and R_c^+ are given.
Using the numerical results of the finite-size scaling study of the q-state Potts model by Bloete and Nightingale, we obtain conjectured expressions for the universal amplitude of the free energy density.
Monte Carlo (MC) and series expansion (SE) data for the energy, specific heat, magnetization and susceptibility of the two-dimensional 4-state Potts model in the vicinity of the critical point are analysed. The role of logarithmic corrections is discussed and an approach is proposed in order to account numerically for these corrections in the determination of critical amplitudes. Accurate estimates of universal amplitude ratios $A_+/A_-$, $Γ_+/Γ_-$, $Γ_T/Γ_-$ and $R_C^\pm$ are given, which arouse new questions with respect to previous works.
Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and series expansions (SE) data for the energy, specific heat, magnetization, and susceptibility of the three-state and four-state Potts model and Baxter-Wu model on the square lattice are analyzed in the vicinity of the critical point in order to estimate universal combinations of critical amplitudes. We also form effective ratios of the observables close to the critical point and analyze how they approach the universal critical-amplitude ratios. In particular, using the duality relation, we show analytically that for the Potts model with a number of states $q\le …
The universal amplitude ratio $R_ξ$ for the ($q\leqslant 4$)-state Potts model in two dimensions is determined by using results for the dilute A model in regime 1. The nature of the relationship between the Potts model and the dilute A model, both related to $ϕ_{2,1}$ perturbed conformal field theory, is discussed.
We study the low temperature quench dynamics of the two-dimensional Potts model in the limit of large number of states, q >> 1. We identify a q-independent crossover temperature (the pseudo spinodal) below which no high-temperature metastability stops the curvature driven coarsening process. At short length scales, the latter is decorated by freezing for some lattice geometries, notably the square one. With simple analytic arguments we evaluate the relevant time-scale in the coarsening regime, which turns out to be of Arrhenius form and independent of q for large q. Once taken into account dyn…
We provide a new criterion based on graph duality to predict whether the 3-state Potts antiferromagnet on a plane quadrangulation has a zero- or finite-temperature critical point, and its universality class. The former case occurs for quadrangulations of self-dual type, and the zero-temperature critical point has central charge $c=1$. The latter case occurs for quadrangulations of non-self-dual type, and the critical point belongs to the universality class of the 3-state Potts ferromagnet. We have tested this criterion against high-precision computations on four lattices of each type, with ver…
Critical behavior in short-time dynamics is investigated by a Monte Carlo study for the random-bond Potts ferromagnet with a trinary distribution of quenched disorders on two-dimensional triangular lattices. The dynamic scaling is verified and applied to estimate critical exponents $θ$, $z$ and $β/ν$ for several realizations of the trinary distribution. Our critical scaling analysis strongly indicates that the bond randomness influences the critical universality.
We analyze Monte Carlo simulation and series-expansion data for the susceptibility of the three-state Potts model in the critical region. The amplitudes of the susceptibility on the high- and the low-temperature sides of the critical point as extracted from the Monte Carlo data are in good agreement with those obtained from the series expansions and their (universal) ratio compares quite well with a recent quantum field theory prediction by Delfino and Cardy.
We study systems of M Potts models coupled by their local energy density. Each model is taken to have a distinct number of states, and the permutational symmetry S_M present in the case of identical coupled models is thus broken initially. The duality transformations within the space of 2^M-1 multi-energy couplings are shown to have a particularly simple form. The selfdual manifold has dimension D_M = 2^{M-1}-1. Specialising to the case M=3, we identify a unique non-trivial critical point in the three-dimensional selfdual space. We compare its critical exponents as computed from the perturbati…
The random q-state quantum Potts model is studied on hypercubic lattices in dimensions 2 and 3 using the numerical implementation of the Strong Disorder Renormalization Group introduced by Kovacs and Igl{ó}i [Phys. Rev. B 82, 054437 (2010)]. Critical exponents $ν$, d f and $ψ$ at the Infinite Disorder Fixed Point are estimated by Finite-Size Scaling for several numbers of states q between 2 and 50. When scaling corrections are not taken into account, the estimates of both d f and $ψ$ systematically increase with q. It is shown however that q-dependent scaling corrections are present and that t…
Using Monte Carlo simulations in the frame of stochastic series expansion (SSE), we study the three-state quantum Potts model. The cluster algorithm we used is a direct generalization of that for the quantum Ising model. The simulations include the one dimensional and two dimensional ferromagnetic three-state quantum Potts model and the two dimensional antiferromagnetic three-state quantum Potts model. Our results show that the phase transition of the one dimensional ferromagnetic quantum Potts model belongs to the same universality class of the two dimensional classical Potts model, the two d…
We present a solution of the non-linear renormalization group equations leading to the dominant and subdominant singular behaviours of physical quantities (free energy density, correlation length, internal energy, specific heat, magnetization, susceptibility and magnetocaloric coefficient) at the critical temperature in a non- vanishing magnetic field. The solutions i) lead to exact cancellation of logarithmic corrections in universal amplitude ratios and ii) prove recently proposed relations among logarithmic exponents.
We show an exact equivalence of the free energy of the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet on a lattice $Λ$ for the full temperature interval $0 \le T \le \infty$ and the free energy of the $q$-state Potts model on the dual lattice for a semi-infinite interval of complex temperatures (CT). This implies the existence of two quite different types of CT singularities: the generic kind, which does not obey universality or various scaling relations, and a special kind which does obey such properties and encodes information of direct physical relevance. We apply this observation to characterize CT prope…
The critical behavior of two-dimensional stochastic lattice gas models with C3v symmetry is analyzed. We study the cumulants of the order parameter for the three state (equilibrium) Potts model and for two irreversible models whose dynamic rules are invariant under the symmetry operations of the point group C3v. By means of extensive numerical analysis of the phase transition we show that irreversibility does not affect the critical behavior of the systems. In particular we find that the Binder reduced fourth order cumulant takes a universal value U* which is the same for the three state Potts…

The two-dimensional q-state Potts model is subjected to a Z_q symmetric disorder that allows for the existence of a Nishimori line. At q=2, this model coincides with the +/- J random-bond Ising model. For q>2, apart from the usual pure and zero-temperature fixed points, the ferro/paramagnetic phase boundary is controlled by two critical fixed points: a weak disorder point, whose universality class is that of the ferromagnetic bond-disordered Potts model, and a strong disorder point which generalizes the usual Nishimori point. We numerically study the case q=3, tracing out the phase diagram and…
Reexamining algebraic curves found in the eight-vertex model, we propose an asymptotic form of the correlation functions for off-critical systems possessing rotational and mirror symmetries of the square lattice, i.e., the $C_{4v}$ symmetry. In comparison with the use of the Ornstein-Zernike form, it is efficient to investigate the correlation length with its directional dependence (or anisotropy). We investigate the $Q$-state Potts model on the square lattice. Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are performed using the infinite-size algorithm by Evertz and von der Linden. Fitting the MC data with th…
We analyze the critical behaviour of the three-dimensional, three-state Potts model in the presence of an external ordering field. From a finite size scaling analysis on lattices of size up to 70**3 we determine the critical endpoint of the line of first order phase transitions as (b_c, h_c) =(0.54938(2), 0.000775(10)). We determine the relevant temperature like and symmetry breaking directions at this second order critical point and explicitly verify that it is in the universality class of the three-dimensional Ising model.
Critical behaviour of a nearly critical system, subjected to vivid turbulent mixing, is studied by means of the field theoretic renormalization group. Namely, relaxational stochastic dynamics of a non-conserved order parameter of the Ashkin-Teller-Potts model, coupled to a random velocity field with prescribed statistics, is considered. The mixing is modelled by Kraichnan's rapid-change ensemble: time-decorrelated Gaussian velocity field with the power-like spectrum $\propto k^{-d-ξ}$. It is shown that, depending on the symmetry group of the underlying Potts model, the degree of compressibilit…
Universal asymptotic correlation functions for point group $\boldsymbol{C_{6v}}$ and an observation for triangular lattice $\boldsymbol{Q}$-state Potts model
We consider the two dimensional $Q-$ random-cluster Potts model on the torus and at the critical point. We study the probability for two points to be connected by a cluster for general values of $Q\in [1,4]$. Using a Conformal Field Theory (CFT) approach, we provide the leading topological corrections to the plane limit of this probability. These corrections have universal nature and include, as a special case, the universality class of two-dimensional critical percolation. We compare our predictions to Monte Carlo measurements. Finally, we take Monte Carlo measurements of the torus energy one…
In this study, we performed Monte Carlo simulations of the $q=3,4$-Potts model on quasiperiodic decagonal lattices (QDL) to assess the critical behavior of these systems. Using the single histogram technique in conjunction with the finite-size scaling analysis, we estimate the infinite lattice critical temperatures and the leading critical exponents for $q=3$ and $q=4$ states. Our estimates for the critical exponents on QDL are in good agreement with the exact values on 2D periodic lattices, supporting the claim that both the $q=3$ and $q=4$ Potts model on quasiperiodic lattices belong to the …
We apply simulated tempering and magnetizing (STM) Monte Carlo simulations to the two-dimensional three-state Potts model in an external magnetic field in order to investigate the crossover scaling behaviour in the temperature-field plane at the Potts critical point and towards the Ising universality class for negative magnetic fields. Our data set has been generated by STM simulations of several square lattices with sizes up to 160 x 160 spins, supplemented by conventional canonical simulations of larger lattices at selected simulation points. We present careful scaling and finite-size scalin…
We consider a non-equilibrium three-state model whose dynamics is Markovian and displays the same symmetry as the three-state Potts model, i.e., the transition rates are invariant under the permutation of the states. Unlike the Potts model, detailed balance is in general not satisfied. The aging and the stationary properties of the model defined on a square lattice are obtained by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. We show that the phase diagram presents a critical line, belonging to the three-state Potts universality class, that ends at a point whose universality class is that of t…
We investigate the two-dimensional $q=3$ and 4 Potts models with a variable interaction range by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We locate the phase transitions for several interaction ranges as expressed by the number $z$ of equivalent neighbors. For not too large $z$, the transitions fit well in the universality classes of the short-range Potts models. However, at longer ranges the transitions become discontinuous. For $q=3$ we locate a tricritical point separating the continuous and discontinuous transitions near $z=80$, and a critical fixed point between $z=8$ and 12. For $q=4$ the trans…
The exact solution of a general Z(4) gauge Potts model with a single and double plaquette representation of the action is found on a subspace of gauge-coupling parameters on the square and triangular lattices. The two Ising-type critical lines of a second-order phase transition for the model on a square lattice are found. For the model on a triangular lattice the two critical surfaces of an Ising-type and two nontrivial lines of a second-order phase transition with different critical behavior than on the critical surfaces are found. It is shown that a two dimensional (2D) general Z(4) gauge Po…
A universal (supervised) neural network (NN), which is only trained once on a one-dimensional lattice of 200 sites, is employed to study the phase transition of the two-dimensional (2D) 5-state ferromagnetic Potts model on the square lattice. In particular, the NN is obtained by using merely two artificially made configurations as the training set. Due to the elegant features of the considered NN, results associated with systems consisting of over 4000000 spins can be obtained with ease, and convincing evidence showing the investigated phase transition is weakly first order is reached. The out…
We study the q-state Potts model on the simple cubic lattice with ferromagnetic interactions in one lattice direction, and antiferromagnetic interactions in the two other directions. As the temperature T decreases, the system undergoes a second-order phase transition that fits in the universality class of the 3D O(n) model with n=q-1. This conclusion is based on the estimated critical exponents, and histograms of the order parameter. At even smaller T we find, for q=4 and 5, a first-order transition to a phase with a different type of long-range order. This long-range order dissolves at T=0, a…
We calculate the new dinamic exponent $θ$ of the 4-state Potts model, using short-time simulations. Our estimates $θ_{1}=-0.0471(33)$ and $% θ_{2}=$ $-0.0429(11)$ obtained by following the behavior of the magnetization or measuring the evolution of the time correlation function of the magnetization corroborate the conjecture by Okano et. al. In addition, these values agree with previous estimate of the same dynamic exponent for the two-dimensional Ising model with three-spin interactions in one direction, that is known to belong to the same universality class as the 4-state Potts model. The an…
We study the two-dimensional Potts model on the square lattice in the presence of quenched random-bond impurities. For q>4 the first-order transitions of the pure model are softened due to the impurities, and we determine the resulting universality classes by combining transfer matrix data with conformal invariance. The magnetic exponent beta/nu varies continuously with q, assuming non-Ising values for q>4, whereas the correlation length exponent nu is numerically consistent with unity. We present evidence for the correctness of a formerly proposed phase diagram, unifying pure, percolative and…
We study the critical behaviour of the $q$-state Potts model on an uncorrelated scale-free network having a power-law node degree distribution with a decay exponent $λ$. Previous data show that the phase diagram of the model in the $q,λ$ plane in the second order phase transition regime contains three regions, each being characterized by a different set of critical exponents. In this paper we complete these results by finding analytic expressions for the scaling functions and critical amplitude ratios in the above mentioned regions. Similar to the previously found critical exponents, the scali…
For the two-dimensional Q-state Potts model at criticality, we consider Fortuin-Kasteleyn and spin clusters and study the average number N_Gamma of clusters that intersect a given contour Gamma. To leading order, N_Gamma is proportional to the length of the curve. Additionally, however, there occur logarithmic contributions related to the corners of Gamma. These are found to be universal and their size can be calculated employing techniques from conformal field theory. For the Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters relevant to the thermal phase transition we find agreement with these predictions from larg…
The critical behavior of the $(n+1)$-states Potts model in $d$-dimensions is studied with functional renormalization group techniques. We devise a general method to derive $β$-functions for continuos values of $d$ and $n$ and we write the flow equation for the effective potential (LPA) when instead $n$ is fixed. We calculate several critical exponents, which are found to be in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations and $ε$-expansion results available in the literature. In particular, we focus on Percolation $(n\to0)$ and Spanning Forest $(n\to-1)$ which are the only non-trivial universali…

We study the geometric properties of polymixtures after a sudden quench in temperature. We mimic these systems with the $q$-states Potts model on a square lattice with and without weak quenched disorder, and their evolution with Monte Carlo simulations with non-conserved order parameter. We analyze the distribution of hull enclosed areas for different initial conditions and compare our results with recent exact and numerical findings for $q=2$ (Ising) case. Our results demonstrate the memory of the presence or absence of long-range correlations in the initial state during the coarsening regime…
Phase transitions induced by varying the strength of disorder in the large-q state Potts model in 3d are studied by analytical and numerical methods. By switching on the disorder the transition stays of first order, but different thermodynamical quantities display essential singularities. Only for strong enough disorder the transition will be soften into a second-order one, in which case the ordered phase becomes non-homogeneous at large scales, while the non-correlated sites percolate the sample. In the critical regime the critical exponents are found universal: β/ν=0.60(2) and ν=0.73(1).
Quantum critical points in quasiperiodic magnets can realize new universality classes, with critical properties distinct from those of clean or disordered systems. Here, we study quantum phase transitions separating ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases in the quasiperiodic $q$-state Potts model in $2+1d$. Using a controlled real-space renormalization group approach, we find that the critical behavior is largely independent of $q$, and is controlled by an infinite-quasiperiodicity fixed point. The correlation length exponent is found to be $ν=1$, saturating a modified version of the Harris-Luc…
The surface and bulk properties of the two-dimensional Q > 4 state Potts model in the vicinity of the first order bulk transition point have been studied by exact calculations and by density matrix renormalization group techniques. For the surface transition the complete analytical solution of the problem is presented in the $Q \to \infty$ limit, including the critical and tricritical exponents, magnetization profiles and scaling functions. According to the accurate numerical results the universality class of the surface transition is independent of the value of Q > 4. For the bulk transition …
In a recent paper, we considered the effects of the torus lattice topology on the two-point connectivity of $Q-$ Potts clusters. These effects are universal and probe non-trivial structure constants of the theory. We complete here this work by considering the torus corrections to the three- and four-point connectivities. These corrections, which depend on the scale invariant ratios of the triangle and quadrilateral formed by the three and four given points, test other non-trivial structure constants. We also present results of Monte Carlo simulations in good agreement with our predictions.
In this work, we analyse the $q-$state Potts model with long-range interactions through nonequilibrium scaling relations commonly used when studying short-range systems. We determine the critical temperature via an optimization method for short-time Monte Carlo simulations. The study takes into consideration two different boundary conditions and three different values of range parameters of the couplings. We also present estimates of some critical exponents, named as raw exponents for systems with long-range interactions, which confirm the non-universal character of the model. Finally, we prov…
We discuss the two- and three-point correlators in the two-dimensional three-state Potts model in the high-temperature phase of the model. By using the form factor approach and perturbed conformal field theory methods we are able to describe both the large distance and the short distance behaviours of the correlators. We compare our predictions with a set of high precision Monte-Carlo simulations (performed on the triangular lattice realization of the model) finding a complete agreement in both regimes. In particular we use the two-point correlators to fix the various non-universal constants i…
We compute the crossover exponents of all quadratic and cubic deformations of critical field theories with permutation symmetry $S_q$ in $d=6-ε$ (Landau-Potts field theories) and $d=4-ε$ (hypertetrahedral models) up to three loops. We use our results to determine the $ε$-expansion of the fractal dimension of critical clusters in the most interesting cases, which include spanning trees and forests ($q\to0$), and bond percolations ($q\to1$). We also explicitly verify several expected degeneracies in the spectrum of relevant operators for natural values of $q$ upon analytic continuation, which are…
In this paper, we study the effects of non-local directed Small-World (NLDSW) disorder in the three-state Potts model as a form to capture the essential features shared by real complex systems where non-locality effects play a important role in the behavior of these systems. Using Monte Carlo techniques and finite-size scaling analysis, we estimate the infinite lattice critical temperatures and the leading critical exponents in this model. In particular, we investigate the first- to second-order phase transition crossover when NLDSW links are inserted. A cluster-flip algorithm was used to redu…
The tricritical behavior of the two-dimensional $q$-state Potts model with vacancies for $1\leq q \leq4$ is argued to be encoded in the fractal structure of the geometrical spin clusters of the pure model. The close connection between the critical properties of the pure model and the tricritical properties of the diluted model is shown to be reflected in an intimate relation between Fortuin-Kasteleyn and geometrical clusters: The same transformation mapping the two critical regimes onto each other also maps the two cluster types onto each other. The map conserves the central charge, so that bo…
The universal amplitude ratio $\tilde{R}_ξ$ for percolation in two dimensions is determined exactly using results for the dilute A model in regime 1, by way of a relationship with the q-state Potts model for q<4.
We study the Potts model on a rectangular lattice with aperiodic modulations in its interactions along one direction. Numerical results are obtained using the Wolff algorithm and for many lattice sizes, allowing for a finite-size scaling analyses to be carried out. Three different self-dual aperiodic sequences are employed, which leads to more precise results, since the exact critical temperature is known. We analyze two models, with six and fifteen number of states: both present first-order transitions on their uniform versions. We show that the Harris-Luck criterion, originally introduced in…
The self-dual random-bond eight-state Potts model is studied numerically through large-scale Monte Carlo simulations using the Swendsen-Wang cluster flipping algorithm. We compute bulk and surface order parameters and susceptibilities and deduce the corresponding critical exponents at the random fixed point using standard finite-size scaling techniques. The scaling laws are suitably satisfied. We find that a belonging of the model to the 2D Ising model universality class can be conclusively ruled out, and the dimensions of the relevant bulk and surface scaling fields are found to take the valu…
Universal dimensionless quantities, such as Binder ratios and wrapping probabilities, play an important role in the study of critical phenomena. We study the finite-size scaling behavior of the wrapping probability for the Potts model in the random-cluster representation, under the constraint that the total number of occupied bonds is fixed, so that the canonical ensemble applies. We derive that, in the limit $L \rightarrow \infty$, the critical values of the wrapping probability are different from those of the unconstrained model, i.e. the model in the grand-canonical ensemble, but still univ…
We consider the random-bond Potts model in the large-$Q$ limit and calculate the excess entropy, $S_Γ$, of a contour, $Γ$, which is given by the mean number of Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters which are crossed by $Γ$. In two dimensions $S_Γ$ is proportional to the length of $Γ$, to which - at the critical point - there are universal logarithmic corrections due to corners. These are calculated by applying techniques of conformal field theory and compared with the results of large scale numerical calculations. The central charge of the model is obtained from the corner contributions to the excess ent…
