Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and series expansions (SE) data for the energy, specific heat, magnetization, and susceptibility of the three-state and four-state Potts model and Baxter-Wu model on the square lattice are analyzed in the vicinity of the critical point in order to estimate universal combinations of critical amplitudes. We also form effective ratios of the observables close to the critical point and analyze how they approach the universal critical-amplitude ratios. In particular, using the duality relation, we show analytically that for the Potts model with a number of states $q\le 4$, the effective ratio of the energy critical amplitudes always approaches unity linearly with respect to the reduced temperature. This fact leads to the prediction of relations among the amplitudes of correction-to-scaling terms of the specific heat in the low- and high-temperature phases. It is a common belief that the four-state Potts and the Baxter-Wu model belong to the same universality class. At the same time, the critical behavior of the four-state Potts model is modified by logarithmic corrections while that of the Baxter-Wu model is not. Numerical analysis shows that critical amplitude ratios are very close for both models and, therefore, gives support to the hypothesis that the critical behavior of both systems is described by the same renormalization group fixed point.
Using the numerical results of the finite-size scaling study of the q-state Potts model by Bloete and Nightingale, we obtain conjectured expressions for the universal amplitude of the free energy density.
We consider the mass spectrum of the 3$d$ 3-state Potts model in the broken phase (a) near the second order Ising critical point in the temperature - magnetic field plane and (b) near the weakly first order transition point at zero magnetic field. In the case (a), we compare the mass spectrum with the prediction from universality of mass ratios in the 3$d$ Ising class; in the case (b), we determine a mass ratio to be compared with the corresponding one in the spectrum of screening masses of the (3+1)$d$ SU(3) pure gauge theory at finite temperature in the deconfined phase near the transition. …
Critical behavior in short-time dynamics is investigated by a Monte Carlo study for the random-bond Potts ferromagnet with a trinary distribution of quenched disorders on two-dimensional triangular lattices. The dynamic scaling is verified and applied to estimate critical exponents $θ$, $z$ and $β/ν$ for several realizations of the trinary distribution. Our critical scaling analysis strongly indicates that the bond randomness influences the critical universality.
We provide a new criterion based on graph duality to predict whether the 3-state Potts antiferromagnet on a plane quadrangulation has a zero- or finite-temperature critical point, and its universality class. The former case occurs for quadrangulations of self-dual type, and the zero-temperature critical point has central charge $c=1$. The latter case occurs for quadrangulations of non-self-dual type, and the critical point belongs to the universality class of the 3-state Potts ferromagnet. We have tested this criterion against high-precision computations on four lattices of each type, with ver…
The random q-state quantum Potts model is studied on hypercubic lattices in dimensions 2 and 3 using the numerical implementation of the Strong Disorder Renormalization Group introduced by Kovacs and Igl{ó}i [Phys. Rev. B 82, 054437 (2010)]. Critical exponents $ν$, d f and $ψ$ at the Infinite Disorder Fixed Point are estimated by Finite-Size Scaling for several numbers of states q between 2 and 50. When scaling corrections are not taken into account, the estimates of both d f and $ψ$ systematically increase with q. It is shown however that q-dependent scaling corrections are present and that t…
We study systems of M Potts models coupled by their local energy density. Each model is taken to have a distinct number of states, and the permutational symmetry S_M present in the case of identical coupled models is thus broken initially. The duality transformations within the space of 2^M-1 multi-energy couplings are shown to have a particularly simple form. The selfdual manifold has dimension D_M = 2^{M-1}-1. Specialising to the case M=3, we identify a unique non-trivial critical point in the three-dimensional selfdual space. We compare its critical exponents as computed from the perturbati…
Monte Carlo simulations and series expansion data for the energy, specific heat, magnetization and susceptibility of the 3-state Potts model on the square lattice are analyzed in the vicinity of the critical point in order to estimate universal combinations of critical amplitudes.
We report a transfer matrix study of the random bond $q-$state Potts model in the vicinity of the Ising model $q=2$. We draw attention to a precise determination of magnetic scaling dimensions in order to compare with perturbative results. Universality is checked by the computation of the spin-spin correlation function decay exponent obtained with different types of probability distributions of the coupling strengths. Our numerical data, compared to perturbative results for the second moment of the correlation function, obtained with both replica symmetry and replica symmetry breaking schemes,…
Using the Wang-Landau Monte Carlo method, we study the antiferromagnetic (AF) three-state Potts model with a staggered polarization field on the square lattice. We obtain two phase transitions; one belongs to the ferromagnetic three-state Potts universality class, and the other to the Ising universality class. The phase diagram obtained is quantitatively consistent with the transfer matrix calculation. The Ising transition in the large nearest-neighbor interaction limit has been made clear by the detailed analysis of the energy density of states.
We study the universality class of the fixed points of the 2D random bond q-state Potts model by means of numerical transfer matrix methods. In particular, we determine the critical exponents associated with the fixed point on the Nishimori line. Precise measurements show that the universality class of this fixed point is inconsistent with percolation on Potts clusters for q=2, corresponding to the Ising model, and q=3
Using the corner-transfer matrix renormalization group approach, we revisit the three-state chiral Potts model on the square lattice, a model proposed in the eighties to describe commensurate-incommensurate transitions at surfaces, and with direct relevance to recent experiments on chains of Rydberg atoms. This model was suggested by Huse and Fisher to have a chiral transition in the vicinity of the Potts point, a possibility that turned out to be very difficult to definitely establish or refute numerically. Our results confirm that the transition changes character at a Lifshitz point that sep…
Monte Carlo and series expansion data for the energy, specific heat, magnetisation and susceptibility of the 4-state Potts model in the vicinity of the critical point are analysed. The role of logarithmic corrections is discussed. Estimates of universal ratios A_+/A_-, $Γ_+/Γ_L$, $Γ_T/Γ_L$ and R_c^+ are given.
We study the stochastic dynamics of infinitely many globally interacting $q$-state units on a ring that is externally driven. While repulsive interactions always lead to uniform occupations, attractive interactions give rise to much richer phenomena: We analytically characterize a Hopf bifurcation which separates a high-temperature regime of uniform occupations from a low-temperature one where all units coalesce into a single state. For odd $q$ below the critical temperature starts a synchronization regime which ends via a second phase transition at lower temperatures, while for even $q$ this …
This work is a contribution to the study of universality in out-of-equilibrium lattice models undergoing a second-order phase transition at equilibrium. The experimental protocol that we have chosen is the following: the system is prepared in its high-temperature phase and then quenched at the critical temperature $T_c$. We investigated by mean of Monte Carlo simulations two quantities that are believed to take universal values: the exponent $λ/z$ obtained from the decay of autocorrelation functions and the asymptotic value $X_\infty$ of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio $X(t,s)$. This protoco…
The two-dimensional q-state Potts model is subjected to a Z_q symmetric disorder that allows for the existence of a Nishimori line. At q=2, this model coincides with the +/- J random-bond Ising model. For q>2, apart from the usual pure and zero-temperature fixed points, the ferro/paramagnetic phase boundary is controlled by two critical fixed points: a weak disorder point, whose universality class is that of the ferromagnetic bond-disordered Potts model, and a strong disorder point which generalizes the usual Nishimori point. We numerically study the case q=3, tracing out the phase diagram and…
Critical behaviour of a nearly critical system, subjected to vivid turbulent mixing, is studied by means of the field theoretic renormalization group. Namely, relaxational stochastic dynamics of a non-conserved order parameter of the Ashkin-Teller-Potts model, coupled to a random velocity field with prescribed statistics, is considered. The mixing is modelled by Kraichnan's rapid-change ensemble: time-decorrelated Gaussian velocity field with the power-like spectrum $\propto k^{-d-ξ}$. It is shown that, depending on the symmetry group of the underlying Potts model, the degree of compressibilit…
Monte Carlo (MC) and series expansion (SE) data for the energy, specific heat, magnetization and susceptibility of the two-dimensional 4-state Potts model in the vicinity of the critical point are analysed. The role of logarithmic corrections is discussed and an approach is proposed in order to account numerically for these corrections in the determination of critical amplitudes. Accurate estimates of universal amplitude ratios $A_+/A_-$, $Γ_+/Γ_-$, $Γ_T/Γ_-$ and $R_C^\pm$ are given, which arouse new questions with respect to previous works.
The universal amplitude ratio $R_ξ$ for the ($q\leqslant 4$)-state Potts model in two dimensions is determined by using results for the dilute A model in regime 1. The nature of the relationship between the Potts model and the dilute A model, both related to $ϕ_{2,1}$ perturbed conformal field theory, is discussed.
We argue that the 4-state Potts antiferromagnet has a finite-temperature phase transition on any Eulerian plane triangulation in which one sublattice consists of vertices of degree 4. We furthermore predict the universality class of this transition. We then present transfer-matrix and Monte Carlo data confirming these predictions for the cases of the union-jack and bisected hexagonal lattices.
We analyze the critical behaviour of the three-dimensional, three-state Potts model in the presence of an external ordering field. From a finite size scaling analysis on lattices of size up to 70**3 we determine the critical endpoint of the line of first order phase transitions as (b_c, h_c) =(0.54938(2), 0.000775(10)). We determine the relevant temperature like and symmetry breaking directions at this second order critical point and explicitly verify that it is in the universality class of the three-dimensional Ising model.
We study the low temperature quench dynamics of the two-dimensional Potts model in the limit of large number of states, q >> 1. We identify a q-independent crossover temperature (the pseudo spinodal) below which no high-temperature metastability stops the curvature driven coarsening process. At short length scales, the latter is decorated by freezing for some lattice geometries, notably the square one. With simple analytic arguments we evaluate the relevant time-scale in the coarsening regime, which turns out to be of Arrhenius form and independent of q for large q. Once taken into account dyn…
Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and series expansion (SE) data for the energy, specific heat, magnetization and susceptibility of the ferromagnetic 4-state Potts model on the square lattice are analyzed in a vicinity of the critical point in order to estimate universal combinations of critical amplitudes. The quality of the fits is improved using predictions of the renormalization group (RG) approach and of conformal invariance, and restricting the data within an appropriate temperature window. The RG predictions on the cancelation of the logarithmic corrections in the universal amplitude ratios …
We consider a non-equilibrium three-state model whose dynamics is Markovian and displays the same symmetry as the three-state Potts model, i.e., the transition rates are invariant under the permutation of the states. Unlike the Potts model, detailed balance is in general not satisfied. The aging and the stationary properties of the model defined on a square lattice are obtained by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. We show that the phase diagram presents a critical line, belonging to the three-state Potts universality class, that ends at a point whose universality class is that of t…
In this study, we performed Monte Carlo simulations of the $q=3,4$-Potts model on quasiperiodic decagonal lattices (QDL) to assess the critical behavior of these systems. Using the single histogram technique in conjunction with the finite-size scaling analysis, we estimate the infinite lattice critical temperatures and the leading critical exponents for $q=3$ and $q=4$ states. Our estimates for the critical exponents on QDL are in good agreement with the exact values on 2D periodic lattices, supporting the claim that both the $q=3$ and $q=4$ Potts model on quasiperiodic lattices belong to the …
Quantum critical points in quasiperiodic magnets can realize new universality classes, with critical properties distinct from those of clean or disordered systems. Here, we study quantum phase transitions separating ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases in the quasiperiodic $q$-state Potts model in $2+1d$. Using a controlled real-space renormalization group approach, we find that the critical behavior is largely independent of $q$, and is controlled by an infinite-quasiperiodicity fixed point. The correlation length exponent is found to be $ν=1$, saturating a modified version of the Harris-Luc…
We study the two-dimensional Potts model on the square lattice in the presence of quenched random-bond impurities. For q>4 the first-order transitions of the pure model are softened due to the impurities, and we determine the resulting universality classes by combining transfer matrix data with conformal invariance. The magnetic exponent beta/nu varies continuously with q, assuming non-Ising values for q>4, whereas the correlation length exponent nu is numerically consistent with unity. We present evidence for the correctness of a formerly proposed phase diagram, unifying pure, percolative and…
The critical behavior of the $(n+1)$-states Potts model in $d$-dimensions is studied with functional renormalization group techniques. We devise a general method to derive $β$-functions for continuos values of $d$ and $n$ and we write the flow equation for the effective potential (LPA) when instead $n$ is fixed. We calculate several critical exponents, which are found to be in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations and $ε$-expansion results available in the literature. In particular, we focus on Percolation $(n\to0)$ and Spanning Forest $(n\to-1)$ which are the only non-trivial universali…
We analyze Monte Carlo simulation and series-expansion data for the susceptibility of the three-state Potts model in the critical region. The amplitudes of the susceptibility on the high- and the low-temperature sides of the critical point as extracted from the Monte Carlo data are in good agreement with those obtained from the series expansions and their (universal) ratio compares quite well with a recent quantum field theory prediction by Delfino and Cardy.
We investigate the two-dimensional $q=3$ and 4 Potts models with a variable interaction range by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We locate the phase transitions for several interaction ranges as expressed by the number $z$ of equivalent neighbors. For not too large $z$, the transitions fit well in the universality classes of the short-range Potts models. However, at longer ranges the transitions become discontinuous. For $q=3$ we locate a tricritical point separating the continuous and discontinuous transitions near $z=80$, and a critical fixed point between $z=8$ and 12. For $q=4$ the trans…
The q-state Potts field theory describes the universality class associated to the spontaneous breaking of the permutation symmetry of q colors. In two dimensions it is defined up to q=4 and exhibits duality and integrability away from critical temperature in absence of magnetic field. We show how, when a magnetic field is switched on, it provides the simplest model of confinement allowing for both mesons and baryons. Deconfined quarks (kinks) exist in a phase bounded by a first order transition on one side, and a second order transition on the other. The evolution of the mass spectrum with tem…
The exact solution of a general Z(4) gauge Potts model with a single and double plaquette representation of the action is found on a subspace of gauge-coupling parameters on the square and triangular lattices. The two Ising-type critical lines of a second-order phase transition for the model on a square lattice are found. For the model on a triangular lattice the two critical surfaces of an Ising-type and two nontrivial lines of a second-order phase transition with different critical behavior than on the critical surfaces are found. It is shown that a two dimensional (2D) general Z(4) gauge Po…
We calculate the new dinamic exponent $θ$ of the 4-state Potts model, using short-time simulations. Our estimates $θ_{1}=-0.0471(33)$ and $% θ_{2}=$ $-0.0429(11)$ obtained by following the behavior of the magnetization or measuring the evolution of the time correlation function of the magnetization corroborate the conjecture by Okano et. al. In addition, these values agree with previous estimate of the same dynamic exponent for the two-dimensional Ising model with three-spin interactions in one direction, that is known to belong to the same universality class as the 4-state Potts model. The an…
We study the critical behaviour of the $q$-state Potts model on an uncorrelated scale-free network having a power-law node degree distribution with a decay exponent $λ$. Previous data show that the phase diagram of the model in the $q,λ$ plane in the second order phase transition regime contains three regions, each being characterized by a different set of critical exponents. In this paper we complete these results by finding analytic expressions for the scaling functions and critical amplitude ratios in the above mentioned regions. Similar to the previously found critical exponents, the scali…
The critical behavior of two-dimensional stochastic lattice gas models with C3v symmetry is analyzed. We study the cumulants of the order parameter for the three state (equilibrium) Potts model and for two irreversible models whose dynamic rules are invariant under the symmetry operations of the point group C3v. By means of extensive numerical analysis of the phase transition we show that irreversibility does not affect the critical behavior of the systems. In particular we find that the Binder reduced fourth order cumulant takes a universal value U* which is the same for the three state Potts…
We consider the two dimensional $Q-$ random-cluster Potts model on the torus and at the critical point. We study the probability for two points to be connected by a cluster for general values of $Q\in [1,4]$. Using a Conformal Field Theory (CFT) approach, we provide the leading topological corrections to the plane limit of this probability. These corrections have universal nature and include, as a special case, the universality class of two-dimensional critical percolation. We compare our predictions to Monte Carlo measurements. Finally, we take Monte Carlo measurements of the torus energy one…
The partition function of the finite $1+ε$ state Potts model is shown to yield a closed form for the distribution of clusters in the immediate vicinity of the percolation transition. Various important properties of the transition are manifest, including scaling behavior and the emergence of the spanning cluster. The predictions are compared with simulations. Agreement is found to be good, although convergence between theory and numerical results as the system size is increased is, in some cases, unaccountably slow.
Using Monte Carlo calculations we analyze the order and the universality class of phase transitions into a low density (honeycomb) phase of a triangular antiferromagnetic three-state Bell-Lavis model. The results are obtained in a whole interval of chemical potential $μ$ corresponding to the honeycomb phase. Our results demonstrate that the phase transitions might be attributed to the three-state Potts universality class for all $μ$ values except for the edges of the honeycomb phase existence. At the honeycomb phase and the low density gas phase boundary the transitions become of the first ord…
Reexamining algebraic curves found in the eight-vertex model, we propose an asymptotic form of the correlation functions for off-critical systems possessing rotational and mirror symmetries of the square lattice, i.e., the $C_{4v}$ symmetry. In comparison with the use of the Ornstein-Zernike form, it is efficient to investigate the correlation length with its directional dependence (or anisotropy). We investigate the $Q$-state Potts model on the square lattice. Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are performed using the infinite-size algorithm by Evertz and von der Linden. Fitting the MC data with th…
The surface and bulk properties of the two-dimensional Q > 4 state Potts model in the vicinity of the first order bulk transition point have been studied by exact calculations and by density matrix renormalization group techniques. For the surface transition the complete analytical solution of the problem is presented in the $Q \to \infty$ limit, including the critical and tricritical exponents, magnetization profiles and scaling functions. According to the accurate numerical results the universality class of the surface transition is independent of the value of Q > 4. For the bulk transition …
Universal asymptotic correlation functions for point group $\boldsymbol{C_{6v}}$ and an observation for triangular lattice $\boldsymbol{Q}$-state Potts model
The self-dual random-bond eight-state Potts model is studied numerically through large-scale Monte Carlo simulations using the Swendsen-Wang cluster flipping algorithm. We compute bulk and surface order parameters and susceptibilities and deduce the corresponding critical exponents at the random fixed point using standard finite-size scaling techniques. The scaling laws are suitably satisfied. We find that a belonging of the model to the 2D Ising model universality class can be conclusively ruled out, and the dimensions of the relevant bulk and surface scaling fields are found to take the valu…
In this paper, we study the effects of non-local directed Small-World (NLDSW) disorder in the three-state Potts model as a form to capture the essential features shared by real complex systems where non-locality effects play a important role in the behavior of these systems. Using Monte Carlo techniques and finite-size scaling analysis, we estimate the infinite lattice critical temperatures and the leading critical exponents in this model. In particular, we investigate the first- to second-order phase transition crossover when NLDSW links are inserted. A cluster-flip algorithm was used to redu…
The tricritical behavior of the two-dimensional $q$-state Potts model with vacancies for $1\leq q \leq4$ is argued to be encoded in the fractal structure of the geometrical spin clusters of the pure model. The close connection between the critical properties of the pure model and the tricritical properties of the diluted model is shown to be reflected in an intimate relation between Fortuin-Kasteleyn and geometrical clusters: The same transformation mapping the two critical regimes onto each other also maps the two cluster types onto each other. The map conserves the central charge, so that bo…
We prove the validity of multiparameter universality for the exact critical bulk correlation functions of the anisotropic square-lattice and triangular-lattice Ising models on the basis of the exact scaling structure of the correlation function of the two-dimensional anisotropic scalar $φ^4$ model with four nonuniversal parameters. The correlation functions exhibit a directional nonuniversality due to principal axes whose orientation depends on microscopic details. In particular we determine the exact anisotropy matrices governing the bulk and finite-size critical behavior of the $φ^4$ and Isi…
Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling analysis have been carried out to study the critical behavior and universality for the isotropic-nematic phase transition in a system of long straight rigid rods of length $k$ ($k$-mers) on two-dimensional lattices. The nematic phase, characterized by a big domain of parallel $k$-mers, is separated from the isotropic state by a continuous transition occurring at a finite density. The determination of the critical exponents, along with the behavior of Binder cumulants, indicate that the transition belongs to the 2D Ising universality class for squ…
Monte Carlo simulations have been carried out for a system of monomers on square lattices that, by decreasing temperature or increasing density, polymerize reversibly into chains with two allowed directions and, at the same time, undergo a continuous isotropic-nematic (I-N) transition. The results show that the self-assembly process affects the nature of the transition. Thus, the determination of the critical exponents indicates that the universality class of the I-N transition changes from two-dimensional Ising-type for monodisperse rods without self-assembly to q=1 Potts-type for self-assemb…
We study two problems related to spatially extended systems: the dynamical stability and the universality classes of the replica synchronization transition. We use a simple model of one dimensional coupled map lattices and show that chaotic behavior implies that the synchronization transition belongs to the multiplicative noise universality class, while stable chaos implies that the synchronization transition belongs to the directed percolation universality class.
We study absorbing phase transitions in systems of branching annihilating random walkers and pair contact process with diffusion on a one dimensional ring, where the walkers hop to their nearest neighbor with a bias $ε$. For $ε=0$, three universality classes: directed percolation (DP), parity conserving (PC) and pair contact process with diffusion (PCPD) are typically observed in such systems. We find that the introduction of $ε$ does not change the DP universality class but alters the other two universality classes. For non-zero $ε$, the PCPD class crosses over to DP and the PC class changes …
A new classification of sandpile models into universality classes is presented. On the basis of extensive numerical simulations, in which we measure an extended set of exponents, the Manna two state model [S. S. Manna, J. Phys. A 24, L363 (1991)] is found to belong to a universality class of random neighbor models which is distinct from the universality class of the original model of Bak, Tang and Wiesenfeld [P. Bak, C. Tang and K. Wiensenfeld, Phys. Rev. Lett. 59, 381 (1987)]. Directed models are found to belong to a universality class which includes the directed model introduced and solved b…
We analyse in depth an $S_3$-invariant nearest-neighbor quantum chain in the region of a U(1)-invariant self-dual multicritical point. We find four distinct proximate gapped phases. One has three-state Potts order, corresponding to topological order in a parafermionic formulation. Also nearby is a phase with "representation" symmetry-protected topological (RSPT) order. Its dual exhibits an unusual "not-A" order, where the spins prefer to align in two of the three directions. Within each of the four phases, we find a frustration-free point with exact ground state(s). The exact RSPT ground state…
While there have been important theoretical advances in understanding the universality classes of interfaces moving in porous media, the developed tools cannot be directly applied to experiments. Here we introduce a method that can identify the universality class from snapshots of the interface profile. We test the method on discrete models whose universality class is well known, and use it to identify the universality class of interfaces obtained in experiments on fluid flow in porous media.
We describe new universality classes associated to generic higher character Lifshitz critical behaviors for systems with arbitrary short range competing interactions. New renormalization-group arguments are proposed for anisotropic and isotropic systems. The usual $m$-axial Lifshitz universality classes are obtained as a simple limit of this arbitrary competing critical behavior.
