We study the critical behaviour of the $q$-state Potts model on an uncorrelated scale-free network having a power-law node degree distribution with a decay exponent $λ$. Previous data show that the phase diagram of the model in the $q,λ$ plane in the second order phase transition regime contains three regions, each being characterized by a different set of critical exponents. In this paper we complete these results by finding analytic expressions for the scaling functions and critical amplitude ratios in the above mentioned regions. Similar to the previously found critical exponents, the scaling functions and amplitude ratios appear to be $λ$-dependent. In this way, we give a comprehensive description of the critical behaviour in a new universality class.
Using the numerical results of the finite-size scaling study of the q-state Potts model by Bloete and Nightingale, we obtain conjectured expressions for the universal amplitude of the free energy density.
The Potts model is one of the most popular spin models of statistical physics. The prevailing majority of work done so far corresponds to the lattice version of the model. However, many natural or man-made systems are much better described by the topology of a network. We consider the q-state Potts model on an uncorrelated scale-free network for which the node-degree distribution manifests a power-law decay governed by the exponent λ. We work within the mean-field approximation, since for systems on random uncorrelated scale-free networks this method is known to often give asymptotically exact…
A wide range of interacting systems can be described by complex networks. A common feature of such networks is that they consist of several communities or modules, the degree of which may quantified as the \emph{modularity}. However, even a random uncorrelated network, which has no obvious modular structure, has a finite modularity due to the quenched disorder. For this reason, the modularity of a given network is meaningful only when it is compared with that of a randomized network with the same degree distribution. In this context, it is important to calculate the modularity of a random unco…
The first-order phase transition of the two-dimensional eight-state Potts model is shown to be rounded when long-range correlated disorder is coupled to energy density. Critical exponents are estimated by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. In contrast to uncorrelated disorder, a violation of the hyperscaling relation $γ/ν=d-2x_σ$ is observed. Even though the system is not frustrated, disorder fluctuations are strong enough to cause this violation in the very same way as in the 3D random-field Ising model. In the thermal sector too, evidence is given for such violation in the two hyp…
The universal amplitude ratio $R_ξ$ for the ($q\leqslant 4$)-state Potts model in two dimensions is determined by using results for the dilute A model in regime 1. The nature of the relationship between the Potts model and the dilute A model, both related to $ϕ_{2,1}$ perturbed conformal field theory, is discussed.
Monte Carlo simulations and series expansion data for the energy, specific heat, magnetization and susceptibility of the 3-state Potts model on the square lattice are analyzed in the vicinity of the critical point in order to estimate universal combinations of critical amplitudes.
Finite-size corrections to scaling of critical correlation lengths and free energies of Ising and three-state Potts ferromagnets are analysed by numerical methods, on strips of width $N$ sites of square, triangular and honeycomb lattices. Strong evidence is given that the amplitudes of the ``analytical'' correction terms, $N^{-2}$, are identically zero for triangular-- and honeycomb Ising systems. For Potts spins, our results are broadly consistent with this lattice-dependent pattern of cancellations, though for correlation lengths non-vanishing (albeit rather small) amplitudes cannot be entir…
We analyze Monte Carlo simulation and series-expansion data for the susceptibility of the three-state Potts model in the critical region. The amplitudes of the susceptibility on the high- and the low-temperature sides of the critical point as extracted from the Monte Carlo data are in good agreement with those obtained from the series expansions and their (universal) ratio compares quite well with a recent quantum field theory prediction by Delfino and Cardy.
Monte Carlo and series expansion data for the energy, specific heat, magnetisation and susceptibility of the 4-state Potts model in the vicinity of the critical point are analysed. The role of logarithmic corrections is discussed. Estimates of universal ratios A_+/A_-, $Γ_+/Γ_L$, $Γ_T/Γ_L$ and R_c^+ are given.
Monte Carlo (MC) and series expansion (SE) data for the energy, specific heat, magnetization and susceptibility of the two-dimensional 4-state Potts model in the vicinity of the critical point are analysed. The role of logarithmic corrections is discussed and an approach is proposed in order to account numerically for these corrections in the determination of critical amplitudes. Accurate estimates of universal amplitude ratios $A_+/A_-$, $Γ_+/Γ_-$, $Γ_T/Γ_-$ and $R_C^\pm$ are given, which arouse new questions with respect to previous works.
Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and series expansions (SE) data for the energy, specific heat, magnetization, and susceptibility of the three-state and four-state Potts model and Baxter-Wu model on the square lattice are analyzed in the vicinity of the critical point in order to estimate universal combinations of critical amplitudes. We also form effective ratios of the observables close to the critical point and analyze how they approach the universal critical-amplitude ratios. In particular, using the duality relation, we show analytically that for the Potts model with a number of states $q\le …
Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and series expansion (SE) data for the energy, specific heat, magnetization and susceptibility of the ferromagnetic 4-state Potts model on the square lattice are analyzed in a vicinity of the critical point in order to estimate universal combinations of critical amplitudes. The quality of the fits is improved using predictions of the renormalization group (RG) approach and of conformal invariance, and restricting the data within an appropriate temperature window. The RG predictions on the cancelation of the logarithmic corrections in the universal amplitude ratios …
The high-temperature susceptibility of the $q$-state Potts model behaves as $Γ|T-T_c|^{-γ}$ as $T\to T_c+$, while for $T\to T_c-$ one may define both longitudinal and transverse susceptibilities, with the same power law but different amplitudes $Γ_L$ and $Γ_T$. We extend a previous analytic calculation of the universal ratio $Γ/Γ_L$ in two dimensions to the low-temperature ratio $Γ_T/Γ_L$, and test both predictions with Monte Carlo simulations for $q=3$ and 4. The data for $q=4$ are inconclusive owing to large corrections to scaling, while for $q=3$ they appear consistent with the prediction f…
Brownian yet non-Gaussian diffusion has recently been observed in numerous biological and active matter system. The cause of the non-Gaussian distribution have been elaborately studied in the idea of a superstatistical dynamics or a diffusing diffusivity. Based on a random diffusivity model, we here focus on the ergodic property and the scatter of the amplitude of time-averaged mean-squared displacement (TAMSD). Further, we individually investigate this model with three categories of diffusivities, including diffusivity being a random variable $D$, a time-dependent but uncorrelated diffusivity…
We present an exact renormalization group analysis of the Loschmidt amplitude of the quantum $N$-state Potts chain with random quench-disordered nearest neighbor bonds, under the extreme dynamical quantum quench. We prove that the phase transition of the Loschmidt rate function remains sharp in general. For typical bond distributions, the phase transition is found to be a linear-cusp, as in the pure model. For some special discrete bond distributions, however, the rate function exhibits logarithmic divergences. These singularities are due to the competition between the non-critical dynamical p…
We investigate the finite-temperature corrections to scaling in the three-state square-lattice Potts antiferromagnet, close to the critical point at T=0. Numerical diagonalization of the transfer matrix on semi-infinite strips of width $L$ sites, $4 \leq L \leq 14$, yields finite-size estimates of the corresponding scaled gaps, which are extrapolated to $L\to\infty$. Owing to the characteristics of the quantities under study, we argue that the natural variable to consider is $x \equiv L e^{-2β}For the extrapolated scaled gaps we show that square-root corrections, in the variable $x$, are prese…
We study the low-temperature behavior and the phase transition of a thin film by Monte Carlo simulation. The thin film has a simple cubic lattice structure where each site is occupied by a Potts parameter which indicates the molecular orientation of the site. We take only three molecular orientations in this paper which correspond to the 3-state Potts model. The Hamiltonian of the system includes: (i) the exchange interaction $J_{ij}$ between nearest-neighbor sites $i$ and $j$ (ii) the long-range dipolar interaction of amplitude $D$ truncated at a cutoff distance $r_c$ (iii) a single-ion perpe…
We consider the Q-state Potts model in the random-cluster formulation, defined on finite two-dimensional lattices of size L x N with toroidal boundary conditions. Due to the non-locality of the clusters, the partition function Z(L,N) cannot be written simply as a trace of the transfer matrix T\_L. Using a combinatorial method, we establish the decomposition Z(L,N) = \sum\_{l,D\_k} b^{l,D\_k} K\_{l,D\_k}, where the characters K\_{l,D\_k} = \sum\_i (λ\_i)^N are simple traces. In this decomposition, the amplitudes b^{l,D\_k} of the eigenvalues λ\_i of T\_L are labelled by the number l=0,1,...,L o…
We study structural properties of the q-color Potts field theory which, for real values of q, describes the scaling limit of the random cluster model. We show that the number of independent n-point Potts spin correlators coincides with that of independent n-point cluster connectivities and is given by generalized Bell numbers. Only a subset of these spin correlators enters the determination of the Potts magnetic properties for q integer. The structure of the operator product expansion of the spin fields for generic q is also identified. For the two-dimensional case, we analyze the duality rela…
We extend our combinatorial approach of decomposing the partition function of the Potts model on finite two-dimensional lattices of size L x N to the case of toroidal boundary conditions. The elementary quantities in this decomposition are characters K\_{l,D} labelled by a number of bridges l=0,1,...,L and an irreducible representation D of the symmetric group S\_l. We develop an operational method of determining the amplitudes of the eigenvalues as well as some of their degeneracies.

The universal amplitude ratio $\tilde{R}_ξ$ for percolation in two dimensions is determined exactly using results for the dilute A model in regime 1, by way of a relationship with the q-state Potts model for q<4.
We revisit the long standing problem of the geometric free variable approach to computing the generating function for disk amplitudes in the matrix model formulation of the 3-state Potts model coupled to 2D discrete gravity. This method is a mild generalisation of Schwinger Dyson (loop-)equations approach, using graphical arguments to derive a single generating equation in non-commutative variables that contain the information of all loop equations. The method of constructing the generating equation is reviewed, we explain how a larger class of constraints than previously known can be construc…
We analyse in depth an $S_3$-invariant nearest-neighbor quantum chain in the region of a U(1)-invariant self-dual multicritical point. We find four distinct proximate gapped phases. One has three-state Potts order, corresponding to topological order in a parafermionic formulation. Also nearby is a phase with "representation" symmetry-protected topological (RSPT) order. Its dual exhibits an unusual "not-A" order, where the spins prefer to align in two of the three directions. Within each of the four phases, we find a frustration-free point with exact ground state(s). The exact RSPT ground state…
The "bootstrap determination" of the geometrical correlation functions in the two-dimensional Potts model proposed in a paper [arXiv:1607.07224] was later shown in [arXiv:1809.02191] to be incorrect, the actual spectrum of the model being considerably more complex than initially conjectured. We provide in this paper a geometrical interpretation of the four-point functions built in [arXiv:1607.07224], and explain why the results obtained by these authors, albeit incorrect, appeared so close to those of their numerical simulations of the Potts model. Our strategy is based on a cluster expansion …
We present a numerical study of 2D random-bond Potts ferromagnets. The model is studied both below and above the critical value $Q_c=4$ which discriminates between second and first-order transitions in the pure system. Two geometries are considered, namely cylinders and square-shaped systems, and the critical behavior is investigated through conformal invariance techniques which were recently shown to be valid, even in the randomness-induced second-order phase transition regime Q>4. In the cylinder geometry, connectivity transfer matrix calculations provide a simple test to find the range of d…
A Monte Carlo simulation study of the critical and off-critical behavior of the Baxter-Wu model, which belongs to the universality class of the 4-state Potts model, was performed. We estimate the critical temperature window using known analytical results for the specific heat and magnetization. This helps us to extract reliable values of universal combinations of critical amplitudes with reasonable accuracy. Comparisons with approximate analytical predictions and other numerical results are discussed.
We investigate in this paper the ground state and the nature of the transition from an orientational ordered phase at low temperature to the disordered state at high temperature in a molecular crystal. Our model is a Potts model which takes into account the exchange interaction $J$ between nearest-neighbor molecules and a dipolar interaction between molecular axes in three dimensions. The dipolar interaction is characterized by two parameters: its amplitude $D$ and the cutoff distance $r_c$. If the molecular axis at a lattice site has three orientations, say the $x$, $y$ or $z$ axes, then when…
Thermodynamic quantities are derived for superconducting and pseudogap regimes by taking into account both amplitude and phase fluctuations of the pairing field. In the normal (pseudogap) state of the underdoped cuprates, two domains have to be distinguished: near the superconducting region, phase correlations are important up to the temperature $T_ϕ$. Above $T_ϕ$, the pseudogap region is only determined by amplitudes, and phases are uncorrelated. Our calculations show excellent quantitative agreement with specific heat and magnetic susceptibility experiments on cuprates. We find that the mean…
The leading excitations of the dilute $A_L$ model in regime 2 are considered using analytic arguments. The model can be identified with the integrable $ϕ_{1,2}$ perturbation of the unitary minimal series $M_{L,L+1}$. It is demonstrated that the excitation spectrum of the transfer matrix satisfies the same functional equations in terms of elliptic functions as the exact S-matrices of the $ϕ_{1,2}$ perturbation do in terms of trigonometric functions. In particular, the bootstrap equation corresponding to a self-fusing process is recovered. For the special cases $L=3,4,6$ corresponding to the Isi…
Several studies have investigated the scaling behavior in naturally occurring biological and physical processes using techniques such as detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). Data acquisition is an inherent part of these studies and maps the continuous process into digital data. The resulting digital data is discretized in amplitude and time, and shall be referred to as coarse-grained realization in the present study. Since coarse-graining precedes scaling exponent analysis, it is important to understand its effects on scaling exponent estimators such as DFA. In this brief communication, k-mea…
