We study the geometric properties of polymixtures after a sudden quench in temperature. We mimic these systems with the $q$-states Potts model on a square lattice with and without weak quenched disorder, and their evolution with Monte Carlo simulations with non-conserved order parameter. We analyze the distribution of hull enclosed areas for different initial conditions and compare our results with recent exact and numerical findings for $q=2$ (Ising) case. Our results demonstrate the memory of the presence or absence of long-range correlations in the initial state during the coarsening regime and exhibit super-universality properties.
We study the dynamic evolution of geometric structures in a poly-degenerate system represented by a $q$-state Potts model with non-conserved order parameter that is quenched from its disordered into its ordered phase. The numerical results obtained with Monte Carlo simulations show a strong relation between the statistical properties of hull perimeters in the initial state and during coarsening: the statistics and morphology of the structures that are larger than the averaged ones are those of the initial state while the ones of small structures are determined by the curvature driven dynamic p…
We uncover unusual topological features in the long-time relaxation of the $q$-state kinetic Potts ferromagnet on the triangular lattice that is instantaneously quenched to zero temperature from a zero-magnetization initial state. For $q=3$, the final state is either: the ground state (frequency $\approx 0.75$), a frozen three-hexagon state (frequency $\approx 0.16$), a two-stripe state (frequency $\approx 0.09$), or a three-stripe state (frequency $<2\times 10^{-4}$). Other final state topologies, such as states with more than 3 hexagons, occur with probability $10^{-5}$ or smaller, for $q=3$…
We study the fate of the 2d kinetic q-state Potts model after a sudden quench to zero temperature. Both ground states and complicated static states are reached with non-zero probabilities. These outcomes resemble those found in the quench of the 2d Ising model; however, the variety of static states in the q-state Potts model (with q>=3) is much richer than in the Ising model, where static states are either ground or stripe states. Another possibility is that the system gets trapped on a set of equal-energy blinker states where a subset of spins can flip ad infinitum; these states are similar t…
We study the low temperature quench dynamics of the two-dimensional Potts model in the limit of large number of states, q >> 1. We identify a q-independent crossover temperature (the pseudo spinodal) below which no high-temperature metastability stops the curvature driven coarsening process. At short length scales, the latter is decorated by freezing for some lattice geometries, notably the square one. With simple analytic arguments we evaluate the relevant time-scale in the coarsening regime, which turns out to be of Arrhenius form and independent of q for large q. Once taken into account dyn…
We consider the statistics of the areas enclosed by domain boundaries (`hulls') during the curvature-driven coarsening dynamics of a two-dimensional nonconserved scalar field from a disordered initial state. We show that the number of hulls per unit area that enclose an area greater than $A$ has, for large time $t$, the scaling form $N_h(A,t) = 2c/(A+λt)$, demonstrating the validity of dynamical scaling in this system, where $c=1/8π\sqrt{3}$ is a universal constant. Domain areas (regions of aligned spins) have a similar distribution up to very large values of $A/λt$. Identical forms are obtain…
Using large-scale numerical simulations we studied the kinetics of the 2d q-Potts model for q > 4 after a shallow subcritical quench from a high-temperature homogeneous configuration. This protocol drives the system across a first-order phase transition. The initial state is metastable after the quench and, for final temperatures close to the critical one, the system escapes from it via a multi-nucleation process. The ensuing relaxation towards equilibrium proceeds through coarsening with competition between the equivalent ground states. This process has been analyzed for different choices of …
We study electric field driven deracemization in an achiral liquid crystal through the formation and coarsening of chiral domains. It is proposed that deracemization in this system is a curvature-driven process. We test this prediction using the exact result for the distribution of hull-enclosed areas in two-dimensional coarsening in non-conserved scalar order parameter dynamics recently obtained [J.J. Arenzon et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 061116 (2007)]. The experimental data are in very good agreement with the theory. We thus demonstrate that deracemization in such bent-core liquid crystals b…
We study numerically the Kawasaki dynamics of the 2d Ising model. At large time we recover the coarsening growth as l(t) ~ t^(1/3). At shorter time however, the system enters a metastable glassy regime that displays an extremely slow growth and non-trivial violations of the fluctuation dissipation theorem similar to those observed in spin glasses: this is one of the simplest system where such violations occur. We also consider Potts models, where a similar behavior is observed, and the modelof Shore and Sethna where the domain growth is also slow, but where violations of the fluctuation dissip…
We solve the dynamics of an ensemble of interacting rotors coupled to two leads at different chemical potential letting a current flow through the system and driving it out of equilibrium. We show that at low temperature the coarsening phase persists under the voltage drop up to a critical value of the applied potential that depends on the characteristics of the electron reservoirs. We discuss the properties of the critical surface in the temperature, voltage, strength of quantum fluctuations and coupling to the bath phase diagram. We analyze the coarsening regime finding, in particular, which…
We study the distribution of domain areas, areas enclosed by domain boundaries (''hulls''), and perimeters for curvature-driven two-dimensional coarsening, employing a combination of exact analysis and numerical studies, for various initial conditions. We show that the number of hulls per unit area, $n_h(A,t) dA$, with enclosed area in the interval $(A,A+dA)$, is described, for a disordered initial condition, by the scaling function $n_h(A,t) = 2c_h/(A + λ_h t)^2$, where $c_h=1/8π\sqrt{3} \approx 0.023$ is a universal constant and $λ_h$ is a material parameter. For a critical initial condition…
We study the bidimensional voter model on a square lattice with numerical simulations. We demonstrate that the evolution takes place in two distinct dynamic regimes; a first approach towards critical site percolation and a further approach towards full consensus. We calculate the time-dependence of the two growing lengths finding that they are both algebraic though with different exponents (apart from possible logarithmic corrections). We analyse the morphology and statistics of clusters of voters with the same opinion. We compare these results to the ones for curvature driven two-dimensional …

Using numerical simulations we investigate the space-time properties of a system in which spirals emerge within coarsening domains, thus giving rise to non-trivial internal dynamics. Initially proposed in the context of population dynamics, the studied six-species model exhibits growing domains composed of three species in a rock-paper-scissors relationship. Through the investigation of different quantities, such as space-time correlations and the derived characteristic length, autocorrelation, density of empty sites, and interface width, we demonstrate that the non-trivial dynamics inside the…
In various statistical-mechanical models the introduction of a metric onto the space of parameters (e.g. the temperature variable, $β$, and the external field variable, $h$, in the case of spin models) gives an alternative perspective on the phase structure. For the one-dimensional Ising model the scalar curvature, ${\cal R}$, of this metric can be calculated explicitly in the thermodynamic limit and is found to be ${\cal R} = 1 + \cosh (h) / \sqrt{\sinh^2 (h) + \exp (- 4 β)}$. This is positive definite and, for physical fields and temperatures, diverges only at the zero-temperature, zero-fiel…
We investigate the quench of Ising and Potts models via Monte Carlo dynamics, and find that the distribution of the site-site interaction energy has the same form as in the equilibrium case. This form directly derives from the Boltzmann statistics and allows to measure the instantaneous temperature during the systems relaxation. We find that, after an undercritical quench, the system equilibrates in a finite time at the heatbath temperature, while the energy still decreases due to the coarsening process.
In the conceptual framework of phase ordering after temperature quenches below transition, we consider the underdamped Bales-Gooding-type 'momentum conserving' dynamics of a 2D martensitic structural transition from a square-to-rectangle unit cell. The one-component or $N_{\rm OP} =1$ order parameter is one of the physical strains, and the Landau free energy has a triple well, describing a first-order transition. We numerically study the evolution of the strain-strain correlation, and find that it exhibits dynamical scaling, with a coarsening length $L(t) \sim t^α$. We find at intermediate and…
We explore the effect of interplay of interfacial noise and curvature driven dynamics in a binary spin system. An appropriate model is the generalised two dimensional voter model proposed earlier (J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. {\bf 26}, 2317 (1993)), where the flipping probability of a spin depends on the state of its neighbours and is given in terms of two parameters $x$ and $y$. $x = 0.5, y =1$ corresponds to the conventional voter model which is purely interfacial noise driven while $x = 1 $ and $y = 1$ corresponds to the Ising model, where coarsening is fully curvature driven. The coarsening phen…
Mass conservation in chemical species appears in a broad class of reaction-diffusion systems (RDs) and is known to bring about coarsening of the pattern in chemical concentration. Recent theoretical studies on RDs with mass conservation (MCRDs) reported that the interfacial curvature between two states contributes to the coarsening process, reminiscent of phase separation phenomena. However, since MCRDs do not presuppose a variational principle, it is largely unknown whether description of surface tension is operative or not. In this study, we numerically and theoretically explore the coarseni…
We introduce a variant of the voter model in which agents may have different degrees of confidence on their opinions. Those with low confidence are normal voters whose state can change upon a single contact with a different neighboring opinion. However, confidence increases with opinion reinforcement and, above a certain threshold, these agents become zealots that do not change opinion. We show that both strategies, normal voters and zealots, may coexist, leading to a competition between two different kinetic mechanisms: curvature-driven growth and interfacial noise. The kinetically constraine…
Although the notion of entropy lies at the core of statistical mechanics, it is not often used in statistical mechanical models to characterize phase transitions, a role more usually played by quantities such as various order parameters, specific heats or suscept ibilities. The relative entropy induces a metric, the so-called information or Fisher-Rao m etric, on the space of parameters and the geometrical invariants of this metric carry information about the phase structure of the model. In various models the scalar curvature, ${\cal R}$, of the information metric has been found to diverge at…
