In this paper Hilbert spaces are characterized among Banach spaces in terms of transitivity with respect to nicely behaved subgroups of the isometry group. For example, the following result is typical here: If X is a real Banach space isomorphic to a Hilbert space and convex-transitive with respect to the isometric finite-dimensional perturbations of the identity, then X is already isometric to a Hilbert space.
We give a simple and explicit example of a complex Banach space which is not isomorphic to its complex conjugate, and hence of two real-isomorphic spaces which are not complex-isomorphic.
In this paper we present new characterizations of Banach spaces whose duals are isomorphic to $l_{1}(Γ),$ extending results of Stegall, Lewis-Stegall and Cilia-D'Anna-Gutiérrez.
We consider a Banach space, which comes naturally from c0 and it appears in the literature, and we prove that this space has the fixed point property for non-expansive mappings.
In recent decades, topology has come to play an increasing role in some geometric aspects of Banach space theory. The class of so-called $w^*$-locally relatively compact sets was introduced recently by Fonf, Pallares, Troyanski and the author, and were found to be a useful topological tool in the theory of isomorphic smoothness and polyhedrality in Banach spaces. We develop the topological theory of these sets and present some Banach space applications.
Let $(x_n)$ be a sequence in a Banach space $X$ which does not converge in norm, and let $E$ be an isomorphically precisely norming set for $X$ such that \[ \sum_n |x^*(x_{n+1}-x_n)|< \infty, \; \forall x^* \in E. \qquad (*) \] Then there exists a subsequence of $(x_n)$ which spans an isomorphically polyhedral Banach space. It follows immediately from results of V. Fonf that the converse is also true: If a separable Banach space $Y$ is a separable isomorphically polyhedral then there exists a non norm convergent sequence $(x_n)$ which spans $Y$ and there exists an isomorphically precisely norm…
Recent developments in Banach space theory provided unexpected examples of unital Banach algebras that are isomorphic to Calkin algebras of Banach spaces, however no example of a unital Banach algebra that cannot be realised as a~Calkin algebra has been found so far. This naturally led to the question of possible limitations of such assignments. In the present note we provide examples of unital Banach algebras meeting the necessary density condition for being the Calkin algebra of a separable Banach space that are not isomorphic to Calkin algebras of such spaces, nonetheless. The examples may …
Ordered vector spaces E and F are said to be order isomorphic if there is a (not necessarily linear) bijection between them that preserves order. We investigate some situations under which an order isomorphism between two Banach lattices implies the persistence of some linear lattice structure. For instance, it is shown that if a Banach lattice E is order isomorphic to C(K) for some compact Hausdorff space K, then E is (linearly) isomorphic to C(K) as a Banach lattice. Similar results hold for Banach lattices order isomorphic to c_0, and for Banach lattices that contain a closed sublattice ord…
We are interested in the question when a Banach space $X$ with an unconditional basis is isomorphic (as a Banach space) to an order-continuous nonatomic Banach lattice. We show that this is the case if and only if $X$ is isomorphic as a Banach space with $X(\ell_2)$. This and results of J. Bourgain are used to show that spaces $H_1(\bold T^n)$ are not isomorphic to nonatomic Banach lattices. We also show that tent spaces introduced in \cite{4} are isomorphic to Rad $H_1$.
We extend a theorem of Kato on similarity for sequences of projections in Hilbert spaces to the case of isomorphic Schauder decompositions in certain Banach spaces. To this end we use $\ell_Ψ$-Hilbertian and $\infty$-Hilbertian Schauder decompositions instead of orthogonal Schauder decompositions, generalize the concept of an orthogonal Schauder decomposition in a Hilbert space and introduce the class of spaces with Schauder-Orlicz decompositions. Furthermore, we generalize the notions of type, cotype, infratype and $M$-cotype of a Banach space and study the properties of unconditional Schaude…
We prove that a Hilbert space frame $\fti$ contains a Riesz basis if every subfamily $\ftj , J \subseteq I ,$ is a frame for its closed span. Secondly we give a new characterization of Banach spaces which do not have any subspace isomorphic to $c_0$. This result immediately leads to an improvement of a recent theorem of Holub concerning frames consisting of a Riesz basis plus finitely many elements.
A Banach space is polyhedral if the unit ball of each of its finite dimensional subspaces is a polyhedron. It is known that a polyhedral Banach space has a separable dual and is $c_0$-saturated, i.e., each closed infinite dimensional subspace contains an isomorph of $c_0$. In this paper, we show that the Orlicz sequence space $h_M$ is isomorphic to a polyhedral Banach space if $\lim_{t\to 0}M(Kt)/M(t) = \infty$ for some $K < \infty$. We also construct an Orlicz sequence space $h_M$ which is $c_0$-saturated, but which is not isomorphic to any polyhedral Banach space. This shows that being $c_0$…
For every $ 1 < p < \infty $ an isomorphically polyhedral Banach space $E_p$ is constructed having an unconditional basis and admitting a quotient isomorphic to $\ell_p$. It is also shown that $E_p$ is not isomorphic to a subspace of a $C(K)$ space for every countable and compact metric space $K$.
We prove that every Banach space containing a subspace isomorphic to $\co$ fails the fixed point property. The proof is based on an amalgamation approach involving a suitable combination of known results and techniques, including James's distortion theorem, Ramsey's combinatorial theorem, Brunel-Sucheston spreading model techniques and Dowling, Lennard and Turett's fixed point methodology employed in their characterization of weak compactness in $\co$.
We prove that, for each Banach space $X$ which is isomorphic to its hyperplanes, the Lipschitz-free spaces over $X$ and over its sphere are isomorphic.
For every Banach space $Z$ with a shrinking unconditional basis satisfying upper $p$-estimates for some $p > 1$, an isomorphically polyhedral Banach space is constructed having an unconditional basis and admitting a quotient isomorphic to $Z$.
The present paper contributes to the ongoing programme of quantification of isomorphic Banach space theory focusing on Pełczyński's classical work on dual Banach spaces containing $L_{1}$ ($=L_{1}[0,1]$) and the Hagler--Stegall characterisation of dual spaces containing complemented copies of $L_{1}$. We prove the following quantitative version of the Hagler--Stegall theorem asserting that for a Banach space $X$ the following statements are equivalent: $\bullet$ $X$ contains almost isometric copies of $(\bigoplus_{n=1}^{\infty} \ell_{\infty}^{n})_{\ell_1}$, $\bullet$ for all $\varepsilon>0$, $…
If a Banach space has an unconditional basis it either contains a continuum of non isomorphic subspaces or is isomorphic to its square and hyperplanes and satisfies other regularity properties. An HI Banach space contains a continuum of non isomorphic subspaces.
In article is constructed a wide couple of pairwice non-isomorphic separable superreflexive Banach spaces E that are subspace homogeneous. Their conjugates are quotient homogeneous. None of this couple neither isomorphic to its Cartesian square nor has the approximation property. At the same time, any such E is isomorphic to E+ E+ W for some Banach space W and, hence, solves the Schroeder - Bernstein problem.
Following results of Bourgain and Gorelik we show that the spaces $\ell_p$, $1<p<\infty$, as well as some related spaces have the following uniqueness property: If $X$ is a Banach space uniformly homeomorphic to one of these spaces then it is linearly isomorphic to the same space. We also prove that if a $C(K)$ space is uniformly homeomorphic to $c_0$, then it is isomorphic to $c_0$. We show also that there are Banach spaces which are uniformly homeomorphic to exactly $2$ isomorphically distinct spaces.
We study isomorphic universality of Banach spaces of a given density and a number of pairwise non-isomorphic models in the same class. We show that in the Cohen model the isomorphic universality number for Banach spaces of density $\aleph_1$ is $\aleph_2$, and analogous results are true for other cardinals (Theorem 1.2(1)) and that adding just one Cohen real to any model destroys the old universality of Banach spaces of density $\aleph_1$ (Theorem 1.5). Moreover, adding one Cohen real adds a weakly compactly generated Banach space of density $\aleph_1$ which does not embed into any Banach spac…
We prove that the spaces $\ell_p$, $1<p<\infty, p\ne 2$, and all infinite-dimensional subspaces of their quotient spaces do not admit equivalent almost transitive renormings. This is a step towards the solution of the Banach-Mazur rotation problem, which asks whether a separable Banach space with a transitive norm has to be isometric or isomorphic to a Hilbert space. We obtain this as a consequence of a new property of almost transitive spaces with a Schauder basis, namely we prove that in such spaces the unit vector basis of $\ell_2^2$ belongs to the two-dimensional asymptotic structure and w…
We show that if $T$ is an isometry (as metric spaces) from an open subgroup of the invertible group $A^{-1}$ of a unital Banach algebra $A$ onto an open subgroup of the invertible group $B^{-1}$ of a unital Banach algebra $B$, then $T$ is extended to a real-linear isometry up to translation between these Banach algebras. We consider multiplicativity or unti-multiplicativity of the isometry. Note that a unital linear isometry between unital semisimple commutative Banach algebra need be multiplicative. On the other hand, we show that if $A$ is commutative and $A$ or $B$ are semisimple, then $(T(…
Real smooth three-dimensional or higher Banach spaces are isomorphic with respect to the nonlinear structure of Birkhoff-James orthogonality if and only if they are isometrically isomorphic. Moreover, using smooth Radon planes and non-smooth direct sums, in arbitrary dimensions, we construct examples of non-isometric pairs of real Banach spaces that admit norm-preserving homogeneous bicontinuous Birkhoff-James orthogonality preservers among them.
A Banach space contains either a minimal subspace or a continuum of incomparable subspaces. General structure results for analytic equivalence relations are applied in the context of Banach spaces to show that if $E_0$ does not reduce to isomorphism of the subspaces of a space, in particular, if the subspaces of the space admit a classification up to isomorphism by real numbers, then any subspace with an unconditional basis is isomorphic to its square and hyperplanes and has an isomorphically homogeneous subsequence.
A problem of Banach asks whether every infinite-dimensional Banach space which is isomorphic to all its infinite-dimensional subspaces must be isomorphic to a separable Hilbert space. In this paper we prove a result of a Ramsey-theoretic nature which implies an interesting dichotomy for subspaces of Banach spaces. Combined with a result of Komorowski and Tomczak-Jaegermann, this gives a positive answer to Banach's problem. We then generalize the Ramsey-theoretic result and deduce a further dichotomy for Banach spaces with an unconditional basis.
For a certain class of algebras $\cal A$ we give a method for constructing Banach spaces $X$ such that every operator on $X$ is close to an operator in $\cal A$. This is used to produce spaces with a small amount of structure. We present several applications. Amongst them are constructions of a new prime Banach space, a space isomorphic to its subspaces of codimension two but not to its hyperplanes and a space isomorphic to its cube but not to its square.
For every $n\geq 3,$ we construct an $n$-dimensional Banach space which is isometric to a subspace of $L_{1/2}$ but is not isometric to a subspace of $L_1.$ The isomorphic version of this problem (posed by S. Kwapien in 1969) is still open. Another example gives a Banach subspace of $L_{1/4}$ which does not embed isometrically in $L_{1/2}.$ Note that, from the isomorphic point of view, all the spaces $L_q$ with $q<1$ have the same Banach subspaces.
We prove that if $K$ and $L$ are compact spaces and $C(K)$ and $C(L)$ are isomorphic as Banach spaces then $K$ has a $π$-base consisting of open sets $U$ such that $\bar{U}$ is a continuous image of some compact subspace of $L$. This gives some information on isomorphic classes of the spaces of the form $C([0,1]^κ)$ and $C(K)$ where $K$ is Corson compact.
We prove that no ultraproduct of Banach spaces via a countably incomplete ultrafilter can contain $c_0$ complemented. This shows that a "result" widely used in the theory of ultraproducts is wrong. We then amend a number of results whose proofs had been infected by that statement. In particular we provide proofs for the following statements: (i) All $M$-spaces, in particular all $C(K)$-spaces, have ultrapowers isomorphic to ultrapowers of $c_0$, as well as all their complemented subspaces isomorphic to their square. (ii) No ultrapower of the Gurari\u ı space can be complemented in any $M$-spac…
For every Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis consider the Banach algebra $\mathbb{R} I\oplus\mathcal{K}_\mathrm{diag}(X)$ of all diagonal operators that are of the form $λI + K$. We prove that $\mathbb{R} I\oplus\mathcal{K}_\mathrm{diag}(X)$ is a Calkin algbra i.e., there exists a Banach space $\mathcal{Y}_X$ so that the Calkin algebra of $\mathcal{Y}_X$ is isomorphic as a Banach algebra to $\mathbb{R} I\oplus\mathcal{K}_\mathrm{diag}(X)$. Among other applications of this theorem we obtain that certain hereditarily indecomposable spaces and the James spaces $J_p$ and their duals endowed wi…
We give a simple example of a countable metric space $M$ that does not embed bi-Lipschitz with distortion strictly less than 2 into any Asplund space. Actually, if $M$ embeds with distortion strictly less than 2 to a Banach space $X$, then $X$ contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$. We also show that the space $M$ does not embed with distortion strictly less than $2$ into $\ell_1$ itself but it does embed isometrically into a space that is isomorphic to $\ell_1$.
It is proved that, for each pair (m,n) of non-negative integers, there is a Banach space X for which the group K_0(B(X)) is isomorphic to m copies of the integers and the group K_1(B(X)) is isomorphic to n copies of the integers. Along the way we compute the K-groups of all closed ideals of operators contained in the ideal of strictly singular operators, and we derive some results about the existence of splittings of certain short exact sequences.
Krivine and Maurey proved in 1981 that every stable Banach space contains almost isometric copies of $\ell_p$, for some $p\in[1,\infty)$. In 1983, Raynaud showed that if a Banach space uniformly embeds into a superstable Banach space, then $X$ must contain an isomorphic copy of $\ell_p$, for some $p\in[1,\infty)$. In these notes, we show that if a Banach space coarsely embeds into a superstable Banach space, then $X$ has a spreading model isomorphic to $\ell_p$, for some $p\in[1,\infty)$. In particular, we obtain that there exist reflexive Banach spaces which do not coarsely embed into any sup…
We first include a result of the second author showing that the Banach space S is complementably minimal. We then show that every block sequence of the unit vector basis of S has a subsequence which spans a space isomorphic to its square. By the Pełczyński decomposition method it follows that every basic sequence in S which spans a space complemented in S has a subsequence which spans a space isomorphic to S (i.e. S is a subsequentially prime space).
An example of an infinite dimensional and separable Banach space is given, that is not isomorphic to a subspace of l1 with no infinite equilateral sets.
R.M. Aron et al. proved that the Cluster Value Theorem in the infinite dimensional Banach space setting holds for the Banach algebra $\mathcal{H}^\infty (B_{c_0})$. On the other hand, B.J. Cole and T.W. Gamelin showed that $\mathcal{H}^\infty (\ell_2 \cap B_{c_0})$ is isometrically isomorphic to $\mathcal{H}^\infty (B_{c_0})$ in the sense of an algebra. Motivated by this work, we are interested in a class of open subsets $U$ of a Banach space $X$ for which $\mathcal{H}^\infty (U)$ is isometrically isomorphic to $\mathcal{H}^\infty (B_{c_0})$. We prove that there exist polydisk type domains $U$…
Several new characterizations of Banach spaces containing a subspace isomorphic to $\ell^1$, are obtained. These are applied to the question of when $\ell^1$ embeds in the injective tensor product of two Banach spaces.
It is known that a Banach space contains an isomorphic copy of $c_0$ if, and only if, it can be equivalently renormed to be almost square. We introduce and study transfinite versions of almost square Banach spaces with the purpose to relate them to the containment of isomorphic copies of $c_0(κ)$, where $κ$ is some uncountable cardinal. We also provide several examples and stability results of the above properties by taking direct sums, tensor products and ultraproducts. By connecting the above properties with transfinite analogues of the strong diameter two property and octahedral norms, we o…
A Banach space E is c_0-saturated if every closed infinite dimensional subspace of E contains an isomorph of c_0. A c_0-saturated Banach space with an unconditional basis which has a quotient space isomorphic to l^2 is constructed.
A well-known classical result states that $c_0$ is linearly embeddable in a Banach lattice if and only if it is lattice embeddable. Improving results of H.P.~Lotz, H.P.~Rosenthal and N.~Ghoussoub, we prove that $C[0,1]$ shares this property with $c_0$. Furthermore, we show that any infinite-dimensional sublattice of $C[0,1]$ is either lattice isomorphic to $c_0$ or contains a sublattice isomorphic to $C[0,1]$. As a consequence, it is proved that for a separable Banach lattice $X$ the following conditions are equivalent: (1) $X$ is linearly embeddable in a Banach lattice if and only if it is la…
In the first part of our note we prove that every Weakly Lindelöf Determined (WLD) (in particular, every reflexive) non-separable Banach $X$ space contains two dense linear subspaces $Y$ and $Z$ that are not densely isomorphic. This means that there are no further dense linear subspaces $Y_0$ and $Z_0$ of $Y$ and $Z$ which are linearly isomorphic. Our main result (Theorem B) concerns the existence of biorthogonal systems in normed spaces. In particular, we prove under the Continuum Hypothesis (CH) that there exists a dense linear subspace of $\ell_2(ω_1)$ (or more generally every WLD space of …
A Banach space X is said to have the Tsirelson property if it does not contain subspaces that are isomorphic to l_{p}, p in [1,infty) or c_{0}. The article contains a quite simple method to producing Banach spaces with the Tsirelson property.
We prove that a WLD subspace of the space $\ell_\infty^c(Γ)$ consisting of all bounded, countably supported functions on a set $Γ$ embeds isomorphically into $\ell_\infty$ if and only if it does not contain isometric copies of $c_0(ω_1)$. Moreover, a subspace of $\ell_\infty^c(ω_1)$ is constructed that has an unconditional basis, does not embed into $\ell_\infty$, and whose every weakly compact subset is separable (in particular, it cannot contain any isomorphic copies of $c_0(ω_1)$).
We characterize non-reflexive Banach spaces by a low-distortion (resp. isometric) embeddability of a certain metric graph up to a renorming. Also we study non-linear sufficient conditions for $\ell_1^n$ being $(1+\varepsilon)$-isomorphic to a subspace of a Banach space $X$.
We give biorthogonal system characterizations of Banach spaces that fail the Dunford-Pettis property, contain an isomorphic copy of $c_0$, or fail the hereditary Dunford-Pettis property. We combine this with previous results to show that each infinite dimensional Banach space has one of three types of biorthogonal systems.
The space Weak L^1 consists of all measurable functions on [0,1] such that q(f) = sup_{c>0} c λ{t : |f(t)| > c} is finite, where λdenotes Lebesgue measure. Let ρbe the gauge functional of the unit ball {f : q(f) \leq 1} of the quasi- norm q, and let N be the null space of ρ. The normed envelope of Weak L^1, which we denote by W, is the space (Weak L^1/N, ρ). The Banach envelope of Weak L^1, \overline{W}, is the completion of W. We show that \overline{W} is isometrically lattice isomorphic to a sublattice of W. It is also shown that all rearrangement invariant Banach function spaces are isometr…
We show that the classes of separable reflexive Banach spaces and of spaces with separable dual are strongly bounded. This gives a new proof of a recent result of E. Odell and Th. Schlumprecht, asserting that there exists a separable reflexive Banach space containing isomorphic copies of every separable uniformly convex Banach spaces.
A separable Banach space X contains $\ell_1$ isomorphically if and only if X has a bounded wc_0^*-stable biorthogonal system. The dual of a separable Banach space X fails the Schur property if and only if X has a bounded wc_0^*-biorthogonal system.
We consider the question whether there exists a Banach space $X$ of density continuum such that every Banach space of density not bigger than continuum isomorphically embeds into $X$ (called a universal Banach space of density $\cc$). It is well known that $\ell_\infty/c_0$ is such a space if we assume the continuum hypothesis. However, some additional set-theoretic assumption is needed, as we prove in the main result of this paper that it is consistent with the usual axioms of set-theory that there is no universal Banach space of density $\cc$. Thus, the problem of the existence of a universa…
There exists a real hereditarily indecomposable Banach space $X$ such that the quotient space $L(X)/S(X)$ by strictly singular operators is isomorphic to the complex field (resp. to the quaternionic division algebra). Up to isomorphism, the example with complex quotient space has exactly two complex structures, which are conjugate, totally incomparable, and both hereditarily indecomposable. So there exist two Banach spaces which are isometric as real spaces but totally incomparable as complex spaces. This extends results of J. Bourgain and S. Szarek from 1986. The quaternionic example, on the …
We present an isometric version of the complementably universal Banach space $\mathbb{P}$ with a Schauder decomposition. The space $\mathbb{P}$ is isomorphic to Pełczyński's space with a universal basis as well as to Kadec' complementably universal space with the bounded approximation property.
We show that the Kottman constant $K(\cdot)$, together with its symmetric and finite variations, is continuous with respect to the Kadets metric, and they are log-convex, hence continuous, with respect to the interpolation parameter in a complex interpolation schema. Moreover, we show that $K(X)\cdot K(X^*)\geqslant 2$ for every infinite-dimensional Banach space $X$. We also consider the isomorphic Kottman constant (defined as the infimum of the Kottman constants taken over all renormings of the space) and solve the main problem left open in [CaGoPa17], namely that the isomorphic Kottman const…
We prove the result stated in the title. This provides a first example of an infinite-dimensional Banach space whose Lipschitz free space is isomorphic to the free space of a compact set.
We study almost square Banach spaces under a topological point of view. Indeed, we prove that the class of Banach spaces which admits an equivalent norm to be ASQ is that of those Banach spaces which contain an isomorphic copy of $c_0$. We also prove that the symmetric projective tensor products of an almost square Banach space have the strong diameter two property
In this paper we present a method to obtain Banach spaces of universal and almost-universal disposition with respect to a given class $\mathfrak M$ of normed spaces. The method produces, among other, the Gurari\uı space $\mathcal G$ (the only separable Banach space of almost-universal disposition with respect to the class $\mathfrak F$ of finite dimensional spaces), or the Kubis space $\mathcal K$ (under {\sf CH}, the only Banach space with the density character the continuum which is of universal disposition with respect to the class $\mathfrak S$ of separable spaces). We moreover show that $…
It is shown that every separable reflexive Banach space is a quotient of a reflexive Hereditarily Indecomposable space, which yields that every separable reflexive Banach is isomorphic to a subspace of a reflexive Indecomposable space. Furthermore, every separable reflexive Banach space is a quotient of a reflexive complementably $\ell_p$ saturated space with $1<p<\infty$ and of a $c_0$ saturated space.
