For every $ 1 < p < \infty $ an isomorphically polyhedral Banach space $E_p$ is constructed having an unconditional basis and admitting a quotient isomorphic to $\ell_p$. It is also shown that $E_p$ is not isomorphic to a subspace of a $C(K)$ space for every countable and compact metric space $K$.
A Banach space E is c_0-saturated if every closed infinite dimensional subspace of E contains an isomorph of c_0. A c_0-saturated Banach space with an unconditional basis which has a quotient space isomorphic to l^2 is constructed.
For every Banach space $Z$ with a shrinking unconditional basis satisfying upper $p$-estimates for some $p > 1$, an isomorphically polyhedral Banach space is constructed having an unconditional basis and admitting a quotient isomorphic to $Z$.
We construct a Bourgain-Delbaen $\mathscr{L}_\infty$-space $\mathfrak{X}_{Kus}$ with strongly heterogenous structure: any bounded operator on $\mathfrak{X}_{Kus}$ is a compact perturbation of a multiple of the identity, whereas the space $\mathfrak{X}_{Kus}$ is saturated with unconditional basic sequences.
We construct an indecomposable reflexive Banach space $X_{ius}$ such that every infinite dimensional closed subspace contains an unconditional basic sequence. We also show that every operator $T\in \mathcal{B}(X_{ius})$ is of the form $λI+S$ with $S$ a strictly singular operator.
We prove a structural property of the class of unconditionally saturated separable Banach spaces. We show, in particular, that for every analytic set $\aaa$, in the Effros-Borel space of subspaces of $C[0,1]$, of unconditionally saturated separable Banach spaces, there exists an unconditionally saturated Banach space $Y$, with a Schauder basis, that contains isomorphic copies of every space $X$ in the class $\aaa$.
It is shown that variants of the HI methods could yield objects closely connected to the classical Banach spaces. Thus we present a new $c_0$ saturated space, denoted as $\mathfrak{X}_0$, with rather tight structure. The space $\mathfrak{X}_0$ is not embedded into a space with an unconditional basis and its complemented subspaces have the following structure. Everyone is either of type I, namely, contains an isomorph of $\mathfrak{X}_0$ itself or else is isomorphic to a subspace of $c_0$ (type II). Furthermore for any analytic decomposition of $\mathfrak{X}_0$ into two subspaces one is of type…
Based on the technique of enriching contractive type mappings, a technique that has been used successfully in some recent papers, we introduce the concept of {\it saturated} class of contractive mappings. We show that, from this perspective, the contractive type mappings in the metric fixed point theory can be separated into two distinct classes, unsaturated and saturated, and that, for any unsaturated class of mappings, the technique of enriching contractive type mappings provides genuine new fixed point results. We illustrate the concept by surveying some significant fixed point results obta…
It is shown that every separable reflexive Banach space is a quotient of a reflexive Hereditarily Indecomposable space, which yields that every separable reflexive Banach is isomorphic to a subspace of a reflexive Indecomposable space. Furthermore, every separable reflexive Banach space is a quotient of a reflexive complementably $\ell_p$ saturated space with $1<p<\infty$ and of a $c_0$ saturated space.
A Banach space is polyhedral if the unit ball of each of its finite dimensional subspaces is a polyhedron. It is known that a polyhedral Banach space has a separable dual and is $c_0$-saturated, i.e., each closed infinite dimensional subspace contains an isomorph of $c_0$. In this paper, we show that the Orlicz sequence space $h_M$ is isomorphic to a polyhedral Banach space if $\lim_{t\to 0}M(Kt)/M(t) = \infty$ for some $K < \infty$. We also construct an Orlicz sequence space $h_M$ which is $c_0$-saturated, but which is not isomorphic to any polyhedral Banach space. This shows that being $c_0$…
We formulate bang-bang, purification, and minimization principles in dual Banach spaces with Gelfand integrals and provide a complete characterization of the saturation property of finite measure spaces. We also present a new application of the relaxation technique to large economies with infinite-dimensional commodity spaces, where the space of agents is modeled as a finite measure space. We propose a "relaxation" of large economies, which is regarded as a reasonable convexification of original economies. Under the saturation hypothesis, the relaxation and purification techniques enable us to…
It is proved that if a Banach space $Y$ is a quotient of a Banach space having a shrinking unconditional basis, then every normalized weakly null sequence in $Y$ has an unconditional subsequence. The proof yields the corollary that every quotient of Schreier's space is $c_o$-saturated.
In the present work we provide a variety of examples of HI Banach spaces containing no reflexive subspace and we study the structure of their duals as well as the spaces of their linear bounded operators. Our approach is based on saturated extensions of ground sets and the method of attractors.
Galego and Samuel showed that if $K,L$ are metrizable, compact, Hausdorff spaces, then $C(K)\widehat{\otimes}_πC(L)$ is $c_0$-saturated if and only if it is subprojective if and only if $K$ and $L$ are both scattered. We remove the hypothesis of metrizability from their result, and extend it from the case of the two-fold projective tensor product to the general $n$-fold projective tensor product to show that for any $n\in\mathbb{N}$ and compact, Hausdorff spaces $K_1, \ldots, K_n$, $\widehat{\otimes}_{π, i=1}^n C(K_i)$ is $c_0$-saturated if and only if it is subprojective if and only if each $…
We present a Banach space $\mathfrak X$ with a Schauder basis of length $ω\_1$ which is saturated by copies of $c\_0$ and such that for every closed decomposition of a closed subspace $X=X\_0\oplus X\_1$, either $X\_0$ or $X\_1$ has to be separable. This can be considered as the non-separable counterpart of the notion of hereditarily indecomposable space. Indeed, the subspaces of $\mathfrak X$ have ``few operators'' in the sense that every bounded operator $T:X \to \mathfrak{X}$ from a subspace $X$ of $\mathfrak{X}$ into $\mathfrak{X}$ is the sum of a multiple of the inclusion and a $ω\_1$-sin…
A Banach space is $c_0$-saturated if all of its closed infinite dimensional subspaces contain an isomorph of $c_0$. In this article, we study the stability of this property under the formation of direct sums and tensor products. Some of the results are: (1) a slightly more general version of the fact that $c_0$-sums of $c_0$-saturated spaces are $c_0$-saturated; (2) $C(K,E)$ is $c_0$-saturated if both $C(K)$ and $E$ are; (3) the tensor product $JH\tilde{\otimes}_εJH$ is $c_0$-saturated, where $JH$ is the James Hagler space.
A Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis is defined to have the restricted quotient hereditarily indecomposable (QHI) property if $X/Y$ is hereditarily indecomposable (HI) for any infinite codimensional subspace $Y$ with a successive finite-dimensional decomposition on the basis of $X$. A reflexive space with the restricted QHI property is in particular HI, has HI dual, and is saturated with subspaces which are HI and have HI dual. The following dichotomy theorem is proved: any infinite dimensional Banach space contains a quotient of subspace which either has an unconditional basis, or has the…
Motivated by the Lyapunov convexity theorem in infinite dimensions, we extend the convexity of the integral of a decomposable set to separable Banach spaces under the strengthened notion of nonatomicity of measure spaces, called "saturation", and provide a complete characterization of decomposability in terms of saturation.
The aim of this paper is to introduce and investigate a new class of separable Banach spaces modeled after an example of Garling from 1968. For each $1\leqslant p<\infty$ and each nonincreasing weight $\textbf{w}\in c_0\setminus\ell_1$ we exhibit an $\ell_p$-saturated, complementably homogeneous, and uniformly subprojective Banach space $g(\textbf{w},p)$. We also show that $g(\textbf{w},p)$ admits a unique subsymmetric basis despite the fact that for a wide class of weights it does not admit a symmetric basis. This provides the first known examples of Banach spaces where those two properties c…
If a Banach space is saturated with basic sequences whose linear span embeds into the linear span of any subsequence, then it contains a minimal subspace. It follows that any Banach space is either ergodic or contains a minimal subspace. For a Banach space $X$ with an (unconditional) basis, topological 0-1 law type dichotomies are stated for block-subspaces of $X$ as well as for subspaces of $X$ with a successive FDD on its basis. A uniformity principle for properties of block-sequences, results about block-homogeneity, and a possible method to construct a Banach space with an unconditional ba…
We study the class of compact spaces that appear as structure spaces of separable Banach lattices. In other words, we analyze what $C(K)$ spaces appear as principal ideals of separable Banach lattices. Among other things, it is shown that every such compactum $K$ admits a strictly positive regular Borel measure of countable type that is analytic, and in the nonmetrizable case these compacta are saturated with copies of $β\mathbb N$. Some natural questions about this class are left open.
An example of an infinite dimensional and separable Banach space is given, that is not isomorphic to a subspace of l1 with no infinite equilateral sets.
We analyse several examples of separable Banach spaces, some of them new, and relate them to several dichotomies obtained in the previous paper Banach spaces without minimal subspaces, by classifying them according to which side of the dichotomies they fall. This paper may be seen as a more empirical continuation of Banach spaces without minimal subspaces, in which our stress is on the study of examples for the new classes of Banach spaces considered in that work.
We give a simple and explicit example of a complex Banach space which is not isomorphic to its complex conjugate, and hence of two real-isomorphic spaces which are not complex-isomorphic.
Two examples of asymptotic $\ell_{1}$ Banach spaces are given. The first, $X_{u}$, has an unconditional basis and is arbitrarily distortable. The second, $X$, does not contain any unconditional basic sequence. Both are spaces of the type of Tsirelson. We thus answer a question raised by W.T.Gowers.
This paper exemplifies that saturation is an indispensable structure on measure spaces to obtain the existence and characterization of solutions to nonconvex variational problems with integral constraints in Banach spaces and their dual spaces. We provide a characterization of optimality via the maximum principle for the Hamiltonian and an existence result without the purification of relaxed controls, in which the Lyapunov convexity theorem in infinite dimensions under the saturation hypothesis on the underlying measure space plays a crucial role. We also demonstrate that the existence of solu…
We prove that Banach spaces $\ell_1\oplus_2\mathbb{R}$ and $X\oplus_\infty Y$, with strictly convex $X$ and $Y$, have plastic unit balls (we call a metric space plastic if every non-expansive bijection from this space onto itself is an isometry).
Recent developments in Banach space theory provided unexpected examples of unital Banach algebras that are isomorphic to Calkin algebras of Banach spaces, however no example of a unital Banach algebra that cannot be realised as a~Calkin algebra has been found so far. This naturally led to the question of possible limitations of such assignments. In the present note we provide examples of unital Banach algebras meeting the necessary density condition for being the Calkin algebra of a separable Banach space that are not isomorphic to Calkin algebras of such spaces, nonetheless. The examples may …
W.B. Johnson has constructed a series of Banach spaces non isomorphic to the Hilbert one that have the hereditarily approximation property (shortly hereditarily AP): all their subspaces also have the AP. All these examples were ''sufficiently'' non-symmetric and this fact allows Johnson to ask: whether there exists any Banach space $X$ with symmetric (or, at least, subsymmetric) basis, distinct from the Hilbert space such that each its subspace has the AP? In this paper is shown that there is a Banach space with a subsymmetric basis (non-equivalent to any symmetric one), which enjoys the hered…
In three previous papers, we discussed quasidense multifunctions from a Banach space into its dual, or, equivalently, quasidense subsets of the product of a Banach space and its dual. In this paper, we survey (without proofs) some of the main results about quasidensity, and give some simple limiting examples in Hilbert spaces, reflexive Banach spaces, and nonreflexive Banach spaces.
The purpose of this paper is to lay the foundations for the study of the problem of when $\Ext^n(X, Y)=0$ in Banach/quasi-Banach spaces. We provide a number of examples of couples $X,Y$ so that $\Ext^n(X,Y)$ is (or is not ) $0$, including the first example of a separable Banach space $\mathscr K$ so that $\Ext^n(\mathscr K, \mathscr K)\neq 0$ for all $n\in \N$. Such space moreover provides the first example of Banach spaces with infinite homological dimension/codimension. We also show that the homological dimension/codimension of Hilbert spaces is infinite. The final section is devoted to comp…
We obtain some results for and further examples of subprojective and superprojective Banach spaces. We also give several conditions providing examples of non-reflexive superprojective spaces; one of these conditions is stable under $c_0$-sums and projective tensor products.
We introduce the concept of weak L-P property for a pair of Banach spaces, in the study of extreme contractions. We give examples of pairs of Banach spaces (not) satisfying weak L-P property and apply the concept to compute the exact number of extreme contractions between a particular pair of polygonal Banach spaces. We also study the optimality of our results on the newly introduced weak L-P property for a pair of Banach spaces, by considering appropriate examples.
This paper contains results concerning the Borel reduction of the relation $E_0$ of eventual agreement between sequences of 0's and 1's, to the relation of permutative equivalence between basic sequences in a Banach space. For more clarity in this abstract, we state these results in terms of classification by real numbers. If $R$ is some (analytic) equivalence relation on a Polish space $X$, it is said that $R$ is classifiable (by real numbers) if there exists a Borel map $g$ from $X$ into the real line such that $x R x'$ if and only if $g(x)=g(x')$. If $R$ is not classifiable, there must be $…
We construct an example of a real Banach space whose group of surjective isometries has no uniformly continuous one-parameter semigroups, but the group of surjective isometries of its dual contains infinitely many of them. Other examples concerning numerical index, hermitian operators and dissipative operators are also shown.
We prove several results concerning the representation of projections on arbitrary Banach spaces. We also give illustrative examples including an example of a generalized bi-circular projection which can not be written as the average of the identity with an isometric reflection. We also characterize generalized bi-circular projections on $C_0(\Om,X)$, with $\Om$ a locally compact Hausdorff space (not necessarily connected) and $X$ a Banach space with trivial centralizer.
A. Szankowski's example is used to construct a Banach space similar to that of "An example of an asymptotically Hilbertian space which fails the approximation property", P.G. Casazza, C.L. Garc\'ıa, W.B. Johnson [math.FA/0006134 (math@arXiv.org)].
We prove a general result on complemented unconditional basic sequences in Banach lattices and apply it to give some new examples of spaces with unique unconditional basis. We show that Tsirelson space and certain Nakano spaces have the unique unconditional bases. We also construct an example of a space with a unique unconditional basis with a complemented subspace failing to have a unique unconditional basis.
Some new examples of K-monotone couples of the type (X, X(w)), where X is a symmetric space on [0, 1] and w is a weight on [0, 1], are presented. Based on the property of the w-decomposability of a symmetric space we show that, if a weight w changes sufficiently fast, all symmetric spaces X with non-trivial Boyd indices such that the Banach couple (X, X(w)) is K-monotone belong to the class of ultrasymmetric Orlicz spaces. If, in addition, the fundamental function of X is t^{1/p} for some p \in [1, \infty], then X = L_p. At the same time a Banach couple (X, X(w)) may be K-monotone for some non…
We give an example of an amenable, radical Banach algebra, relying on results from non-abelian harmonic analysis due to H. Leptin, D. Poguntke and J. Boidol.
There exists a real hereditarily indecomposable Banach space $X$ such that the quotient space $L(X)/S(X)$ by strictly singular operators is isomorphic to the complex field (resp. to the quaternionic division algebra). Up to isomorphism, the example with complex quotient space has exactly two complex structures, which are conjugate, totally incomparable, and both hereditarily indecomposable. So there exist two Banach spaces which are isometric as real spaces but totally incomparable as complex spaces. This extends results of J. Bourgain and S. Szarek from 1986. The quaternionic example, on the …
We introduce two Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás moduli which measure, for a given Banach space, what is the best possible Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás theorem in this space. We show that there is a common upper bound for these moduli for all Banach spaces and we present an example showing that this bound is sharp. We prove the continuity of these moduli and an inequality with respect to duality. We calculate the two moduli for Hilbert spaces and also present many examples for which the moduli have the maximum possible value (among them, there are $C(K)$ spaces and $L_1(μ)$ spaces). Finally, we show that if …
We present many examples of Banach spaces of linear operators and homogeneous polynomials without the approximation property, thus improving results of Dineen and Mujica [11] and Godefroy and Saphar [13].
A Banach space E is said to have Property (w) if every (bounded linear) operator from E into E' is weakly compact. We give some interesting examples of James type Banach spaces with Property (w). We also consider the passing of Property (w) from E to C(K,E).
A {\em hereditarily indecomposable (or H.I.)} Banach space is an infinite dimensional Banach space such that no subspace can be written as the topological sum of two infinite dimensional subspaces. As an easy consequence, no such space can contain an unconditional basic sequence. This notion was first introduced in 1993 by T.Gowers and B.Maurey, who constructed the first known example of a hereditarily indecomposable space. Gowers-Maurey space is reflexive, however it is not uniformly convex. In this article, we provide an example of a uniformly convex hereditarily indecomposable space, using …
The free Banach lattice over a Banach space is introduced and analyzed. This generalizes the concept of free Banach lattice over a set of generators, and allows us to study the Nakano property and the density character of non-degenerate intervals on these spaces, answering some recent questions of B. de Pagter and A.W. Wickstead. Moreover, an example of a Banach lattice which is weakly compactly generated as a lattice but not as a Banach space is exhibited, thus answering a question of J. Diestel.
We give an example of a positive element $a$ in some ordered Banach algebra $A$ such that its spectrum is equal to $\{1\}$ and it is not greater than or equal to the unit element of $A$.
This article is a continuation of a paper of the first author \cite{F} about complex structures on real Banach spaces. We define a notion of even infinite dimensional real Banach space, and prove that there exist even spaces, including HI or unconditional examples from \cite{F} and $C(K)$ examples due to Plebanek \cite{P}. We extend results of \cite{F} relating the set of complex structures up to isomorphism on a real space to a group associated to inessential operators on that space, and give characterizations of even spaces in terms of this group. We also generalize results of \cite{F} about…
A new hierarchy of Banach spaces $T_k(d,θ)$, $k$ any positive integer, is constructed using barriers in high dimensional Ellentuck spaces \cite{DobrinenJSL15} following the classical framework under which a Tsirelson type norm is defined from a barrier in the Ellentuck space \cite{Argyros/TodorcevicBK}. The following structural properties of these spaces are proved. Each of these spaces contains arbitrarily large copies of $\ell_\infty^n$, with the bound constant for all $n$. For each fixed pair $d$ and $θ$, the spaces $T_k(d,θ)$, $k\ge 1$, are $\ell_p$-saturated, forming natural extensions of…
We identify symmetric quasi-Banach range of the discrete Calderón operator and Hilbert transform acting on a symmetric quasi-Banach sequence space. As an application we present an example of optimal range in the case when the domain of those operators is the weak-$\ell_{1}$ space of sequences.
We prove several dichotomies on linear embeddings between Banach spaces. Given an arbitrary Banach space X with a basis, we show that the relations of isomorphism and bi-embedding are meager or co-meager on the Polish set of block-subspaces of X. We relate this result with tightness and minimality of Banach spaces. Examples and open questions are provided.
We introduce the class of Orlicz-Pettis polynomials between Banach spaces, defined by their action on weakly unconditionally Cauchy series. We give a number of equivalent definitions, examples and counterexamples which highlight the differences between these polynomials and the corresponding linear operators.
We introduce a property of Banach spaces called uniform convex-transitivity, which falls between almost transitivity and convex-transitivity. We will provide examples of uniformly convex-transitive spaces. This property behaves nicely in connection with some Banach-valued function spaces. As a consequence, we obtain new examples of convex-transitive Banach spaces.
We investigate rich subspaces of $L_1$ and deduce an interpolation property of Sidon sets. We also present examples of rich separable subspaces of nonseparable Banach spaces and we study the Daugavet property of tensor products.
