We consider the question whether there exists a Banach space $X$ of density continuum such that every Banach space of density not bigger than continuum isomorphically embeds into $X$ (called a universal Banach space of density $\cc$). It is well known that $\ell_\infty/c_0$ is such a space if we assume the continuum hypothesis. However, some additional set-theoretic assumption is needed, as we prove in the main result of this paper that it is consistent with the usual axioms of set-theory that there is no universal Banach space of density $\cc$. Thus, the problem of the existence of a universal Banach space of density $\cc$ is undecidable using the usual axioms of set-theory.
We also prove that it is consistent that there are universal Banach spaces of density $\cc$, but $\ell_\infty/c_0$ is not among them. This relies on the proof of the consistency of the nonexistence of an isomorphic embedding of $C([0,\cc])$ into $\ell_\infty/c_0$.
A family is constructed of cardinality equal to the continuum, whose members are totally incomparable, reflexive, hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces.
For $1<p\leqslant \infty$, we study the complexity and the existence of universal spaces for two classes of separable Banach spaces, denoted $\textsf{A}_p$ and $\textsf{N}_p$, and related to asymptotic smoothness in Banach spaces. We show that each of these classes is Borel in the class of separable Banach spaces. Then we build small families of Banach spaces that are both injectively and surjectively universal for these classes. Finally, we prove the optimality of this universality result, by proving in particular that none of these classes admits a universal space.
We present an isometric version of the complementably universal Banach space $\mathbb{P}$ with a Schauder decomposition. The space $\mathbb{P}$ is isomorphic to Pełczyński's space with a universal basis as well as to Kadec' complementably universal space with the bounded approximation property.
We prove that if $ C $ is a family of separable Banach spaces which is analytic with respect to the Effros-Borel structure and none member of $ C $ is isometrically universal for all separable Banach spaces, then there exists a separable Banach space with a monotone Schauder basis which is isometrically universal for $ C $ but still not for all separable Banach spaces. We also establish an analogous result for the class of strictly convex spaces.
A reflexive Banach space $X$ with a basis $(e_i)$ is constructed having the property that every monotone basis is block finitely representable in each block basis of $X$.
In this note a large class of primary Banach spaces is characterized. Namely, it will be demonstrated that under the Continuum Hypothesis the ultrapower of any infinite dimensional nonsuperreflexive Banach space is always primary. Consequently, any infinite dimensional nonsuperreflexive Banach space can be isometrically embedded into its primary ultrapowers.
For $1<p\le \infty$, we show the existence of a Banach space which is both injectively and surjectively universal for the class of all separable Banach spaces with an equivalent $p$-asymptotically uniformly smooth norm. We prove that this class is analytic complete in the class of separable Banach spaces. These results extend previous works by Kalton, Werner and Kurka in the case $p=\infty$.
We characterize those classes $\mathcal{C}$ of separable Banach spaces for which there exists a separable Banach space $Y$ not containing $\ell_1$ and such that every space in the class $\mathcal{C}$ is a quotient of $Y$.
Using the technique of Fraïssé theory, for every constant $K\ge 1$ we consruct a universal object in the class of Banach spaces with normalized $K$-suppression unconditional Schauder bases.
These notes are dedicated to the study of the complexity of several classes of separable Banach spaces. We compute the complexity of the Banach-Saks property, the alternating Banach-Saks property, the complete continuous property, and the LUST property. We also show that the weak Banach-Saks property, the Schur property, the Dunford-Pettis property, the analytic Radon-Nikodym property, the set of Banach spaces whose set of unconditionally converging operators is complemented in its bounded oper- ators, the set of Banach spaces whose set of weakly compact operators is complemented in its bounde…
We show that any non-zero Banach space with a separable dual contains a totally disconnected, closed and bounded subset S of Hausdorff dimension 1 such that every Lipschitz function on the space is Fréchet differentiable somewhere in S.
In this paper it will be shown that assuming the Continuum Hypothesis (CH) every nonreflexive Banach space ultrapower is isometrically isomorphic to the space of continuous, bounded and real-valued functions on the Parovicenko space. This Representation Theorem will be helpful in proving some facts from geometry and topology of nonreflexive Banach space ultrapowers.
We show that there exists a separable reflexive Banach space into which every separable uniformly convex Banach space isomorphically embeds. This solves a problem of J. Bourgain. We also give intrinsic characterizations of separable reflexive Banach spaces which embed into a reflexive space with a block $q$-Hilbertian and/or a block $p$-Besselian finite dimensional decomposition.
A Banach space $X$ is elastic if there is a constant $K$ so that whenever a Banach space $Y$ embeds into $X$, then there is an embedding of $Y$ into $X$ with constant $K$. We prove that $C[0,1]$ embeds into separable infinite dimensional elastic Banach spaces, and therefore they are universal for all separable Banach spaces. This confirms a conjecture of Johnson and Odell. The proof uses incremental embeddings into $X$ of $C(K)$ spaces for countable compact $K$ of increasing complexity. To achieve this we develop a generalization of Bourgain's basis index that applies to unconditional sums of …
We first unify all notions of partial injectivity appearing in the literature ---(universal) separable injectivity, (universal) $\aleph$-injectivity --- in the notion of $(α, β)$-injectivity ($(α, β)_λ$-injectivity if the parameter $λ$ has to be specified). Then, extend the notion of space of universal disposition to space of universal $(α, β)$-disposition. Finally, we characterize the $1$-complemented subspaces of spaces of universal $(α, β)$-disposition as precisely the spaces $(α, β)_1$-injective.
In this paper we present a method to obtain Banach spaces of universal and almost-universal disposition with respect to a given class $\mathfrak M$ of normed spaces. The method produces, among other, the Gurari\uı space $\mathcal G$ (the only separable Banach space of almost-universal disposition with respect to the class $\mathfrak F$ of finite dimensional spaces), or the Kubis space $\mathcal K$ (under {\sf CH}, the only Banach space with the density character the continuum which is of universal disposition with respect to the class $\mathfrak S$ of separable spaces). We moreover show that $…
We introduce and study the notion of space of almost universal complemented disposition (a.u.c.d.) as a generalization of Kadec space. We show that every Banach space with separable dual is isometrically contained as a $1$-complemented subspace of a separable a.u.c.d. space and that all a.u.c.d. spaces with $1$-FDD are isometric and contain isometric $1$-complemented copies of every separable Banach space with $1$-FDD. We then study spaces of universal complemented disposition (u.c.d.) and provide different constructions for such spaces. We also consider spaces of u.c.d. with respect to separa…
For a constant $K\geq 1$ let $\mathfrak{B}_K$ be the class of pairs $(X,(\mathbf e_n)_{n\inω})$ consisting of a Banach space $X$ and an unconditional Schauder basis $(\mathbf e_n)_{n\inω}$ for $X$, having the unconditional basic constant $K_u\leq K$. Such pairs are called $K$-based Banach spaces. A based Banach space $X$ is rational if the unit ball of any finite-dimensional subspace spanned by finitely many basic vectors is a polyhedron whose vertices have rational coordinates in the Schauder basis of $X$. Using the technique of Fraïssé theory, we construct a rational $K$-based Banach space $…
We show that for each $p\in(0,1]$ there exists a separable $p$-Banach space $\mathbb G_p$ of almost universal disposition, that is, having the following extension property: for each $ε>0$ and each isometric embedding $g:X\to Y$, where $Y$ is a finite dimensional $p$-Banach space and $X$ is a subspace of $\mathbb G_p$, there is an $ε$-isometry $f:Y\to \mathbb G_p$ such that $x=f(g(x))$ for all $x\in X$. Such a space is unique, up to isometries, does contain an isometric copy of each separable $p$-Banach space and has the remarkable property of being "locally injective" amongst $p$-Banach spaces…
In this paper we deal with two weaker forms of injectivity which turn out to have a rich structure behind: separable injectivity and universal separable injectivity. We show several structural and stability properties of these classes of Banach spaces. We provide natural examples of (universally) separably injective spaces, including $\mathcal L_\infty$ ultraproducts built over countably incomplete ultrafilters, in spite of the fact that these ultraproducts are never injective. We obtain two fundamental characterizations of universally separably injective spaces: a) A Banach space $E$ is unive…
We compare two types of universal operators constructed relatively recently by Cabello Sánchez, and the authors. The first operator $Ω$ acts on the Gurarii space, while the second one $P_S$ has values in a fixed separable Banach space $S$. We show that if $S$ is the Gurarii space, then both operators are isometric. We also prove that, for a fixed space $S$, the operator $P_S$ is isometrically unique. Finally, we show that $Ω$ is generic in the sense of a natural infinite game.
It was proved by Argyros and Dodos that, for many classes $ C $ of separable Banach spaces which share some property $ P $, there exists an isomorphically universal space that satisfies $ P $ as well. We introduce a variant of their amalgamation technique which provides an isometrically universal space in the case that $ C $ consists of spaces with a monotone Schauder basis. For example, we prove that if $ C $ is a set of separable Banach spaces which is analytic with respect to the Effros-Borel structure and every $ X \in C $ is reflexive and has a monotone Schauder basis, then there exists a…
We prove the existence of a separable approximately ultra-homogeneous Banach lattice $\mathfrak{BL}$ that is isometrically universal for separable Banach lattices. This is done by showing that the class of Banach lattices has the Amalgamation Property, and thus finitely generated Banach lattices form a metric Fraïssé class. Some additional results about the structural properties of $\mathfrak{ BL}$ are also proven.
If a Banach space has an unconditional basis it either contains a continuum of non isomorphic subspaces or is isomorphic to its square and hyperplanes and satisfies other regularity properties. An HI Banach space contains a continuum of non isomorphic subspaces.
Given a category of objects, it is both useful and important to know if all the objects in the category may be realised as sub-objects -- via morphisms in the given category -- of a single object in that category enjoying some nice properties. In the category of separable Banach spaces with morphisms consisting of linear isometries, such an example of (a universal) object is provided by the well-known Banach Mazur theorem: the space C[0,1] of continuous functions on the unit interval contains each separable Banach spaces as a closed subspace via a linear isometry. Here the question also arises…
Let $X$, $Y$ be two real Banach spaces and $\varepsilon>0$. A standard $\varepsilon$-isometry $f:X\rightarrow Y$ is said to be $(α,γ)$-stable (with respect to $T:L(f)\equiv\overline{\rm span}f(X)\rightarrow X$ for some $α, γ>0$) if $T$ is a linear operator with $\|T\|\leqα$ so that $Tf-Id$ is uniformly bounded by $γ\varepsilon$ on $X$. The pair $(X,Y)$ is said to be stable if every standard $\varepsilon$-isometry $f:X\rightarrow Y$ is $(α,γ)$-stable for some $α,γ>0$. $X (Y)$ is said to be universally left (right)-stable, if $(X,Y)$ is always stable for every $Y (X)$. In this paper, we show tha…
Using the method of forcing we prove that consistently there is a Banach space of continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space with the Grothendieck property and with density less than the continuum. It follows that the classical result stating that ``no nontrivial complemented subspace of a Grothendieck $C(K)$ space is separable'' cannot be strengthened by replacing ``is separable'' by ``has density less than that of $l_\infty$'', without using an additional set-theoretic assumption. Such a strengthening was proved by Haydon, Levy and Odell, assuming Martin's axiom and the negation of th…
We characterize those classes $\ccc$ of separable Banach spaces admitting a separable universal space $Y$ (that is, a space $Y$ containing, up to isomorphism, all members of $\ccc$) which is not universal for all separable Banach spaces. The characterization is a byproduct of the fact, proved in the paper, that the class $\mathrm{NU}$ of non-universal separable Banach spaces is strongly bounded. This settles in the affirmative the main conjecture form \cite{AD}. Our approach is based, among others, on a construction of $\llll_\infty$-spaces, due to J. Bourgain and G. Pisier. As a consequence w…
We study isomorphic universality of Banach spaces of a given density and a number of pairwise non-isomorphic models in the same class. We show that in the Cohen model the isomorphic universality number for Banach spaces of density $\aleph_1$ is $\aleph_2$, and analogous results are true for other cardinals (Theorem 1.2(1)) and that adding just one Cohen real to any model destroys the old universality of Banach spaces of density $\aleph_1$ (Theorem 1.5). Moreover, adding one Cohen real adds a weakly compactly generated Banach space of density $\aleph_1$ which does not embed into any Banach spac…
We prove that the spaces $\ell_p$, $1<p<\infty, p\ne 2$, and all infinite-dimensional subspaces of their quotient spaces do not admit equivalent almost transitive renormings. This is a step towards the solution of the Banach-Mazur rotation problem, which asks whether a separable Banach space with a transitive norm has to be isometric or isomorphic to a Hilbert space. We obtain this as a consequence of a new property of almost transitive spaces with a Schauder basis, namely we prove that in such spaces the unit vector basis of $\ell_2^2$ belongs to the two-dimensional asymptotic structure and w…
A bounded linear operator between Banach spaces is called {\it completely continuous} if it carries weakly convergent sequences into norm convergent sequences. Isolated is a universal operator for the class of non-completely-continuous operators from $L_1$ into an arbitrary Banach space, namely, the operator from $L_1$ into $\ell_\infty$ defined by $$ T_0 (f) =\left( \int r_n f \, dμ\right)_{n\ge 0} \ , $$ where $r_n$ is the $n^{\text{th}}$ Rademacher function. It is also shown that there does not exist a universal operator for the class of non-completely-continuous operators between two arbit…
Given a Boolean algebra $A$, we construct another Boolean algebra $B$ with no uncountable well-ordered chains such that the Banach space of real valued continuous functions $C(K_A)$ embeds isometrically into $C(K_B)$, where $K_A$ and $K_B$ are the Stone spaces of $A$ and $B$ respectively. As a consequence we obtain the following: If there exists an isometrically universal Banach space for the class of Banach spaces of a given uncountable density $κ$, then there is another such space which is induced by a Boolean algebra which is not universal for Boolean algebras of cardinality $κ$. Such a phe…
In the context of classical associations between classes of Banach spaces and classes of compact Hausdorff spaces we survey known results and open questions concerning the existence and nonexistence of universal Banach spaces and of universal compact spaces in various classes. This gives quite a complex network of interrelations which quite often depend on additional set-theoretic assumptions.
We study distinguished objects in the category $\mathcal{BL}$ of Banach lattices and lattice homomorphisms. The free Banach lattice construction introduced by de Pagter and Wickstead generates push-outs, and combining this with an old result of Kellerer on marginal measures, the amalgamation property of Banach lattices is established. This will be the key tool to prove that $L_1([0,1]^{\mathfrak{c}})$ is separably $\mathcal{BL}$-injective, as well as to give more abstract examples of Banach lattices of universal disposition for separable sublattices. Finally, an analysis of the ideals on $C(Δ,…

Let $ A$ be a complex unital Banach algebra. An element $a \in A$ is said to be Hermitian, if $ \| \exp (ita) \| =1$ for all $t\in R$. In the case of the algebra of bounded linear operators in a Hilbert space this Hermitian property agrees with the ordinary selfadjointness. If $a \in A$ is Hermitian, then $|a|=||a||$, where $|a|$ denotes the spectral radius of $a$. A function $F: R\to \C$ is called the universal symbol if $ \|| F(a)||= |F(a)|$\ for each $ A$ and all Hermitian $a\in A$. We characterize universal symbols in terms of positive definite functions.
A bounded linear operator $U$ between Banach spaces is universal for the complement of some operator ideal $\mathfrak{J}$ if it is a member of the complement and it factors through every element of the complement of $\mathfrak{J}$. In the first part of this paper, we produce new universal operators for the complements of several ideals and give examples of ideals whose complements do not admit such operators. In the second part of the paper, we use Descriptive Set Theory to study operator ideals. After restricting attention to operators between separable Banach spaces, we call an operator idea…
We construct a continuum of mutually non-isomorphic separable Banach spaces which are complemented in each other. Consequently, the Schroeder-Bernstein Index of any of these spaces is $2^{\aleph_0}$. Our construction is based on a Banach space introduced by W. T. Gowers and B. Maurey in 1997. We also use classical descriptive set theory methods, as in some work of V. Ferenczi and C. Rosendal, to improve some results of P. G. Casazza and of N. J. Kalton on the Schroeder-Bernstein Property for spaces with an unconditional finite-dimensional Schauder decomposition.
For each ordinal $α< ω_1$, we prove the existence of a separable, reflexive Banach space with a basis and Szlenk index $ω^{α+1}$ which is universal for the class of separable, reflexive Banach spaces $X$ such that the Szlenk indices $Sz(X), Sz(X^*)$ do not exceed $ω^α$.
Let $X$, $Y$ be two real Banach spaces, and $\eps\geq0$. A map $f:X\rightarrow Y$ is said to be a standard $\eps$-isometry if $|\|f(x)-f(y)\|-\|x-y\||\leq\eps$ for all $x,y\in X$ and with $f(0)=0$. We say that a pair of Banach spaces $(X,Y)$ is stable if there exists $γ>0$ such that for every such $\eps$ and every standard $\eps$-isometry $f:X\rightarrow Y$ there is a bounded linear operator $T:L(f)\equiv\overline{\rm span}f(X)\rightarrow X$ such that $\|Tf(x)-x\|\leqγ\eps$ for all $x\in X$. $X (Y)$ is said to be left (right)-universally stable, if $(X,Y)$ is always stable for every $Y (X)$. I…
We show that any Banach space contains a continuum of non isomorphic subspaces or a minimal subspace. We define an ergodic Banach space $X$ as a space such that $E_0$ Borel reduces to isomorphism on the set of subspaces of $X$, and show that every Banach space is either ergodic or contains a subspace with an unconditional basis $ which is complementably universal for the family of its block-subspaces. We also use our methods to get uniformity results; for example, in combination with a result of B. Maurey, V. Milman and N. Tomczak-Jaegermann, we show that an unconditional basis of a Banach spa…
Let $U_{FNA}$ be the class of all non-archimedean finite-dimensional Banach spaces. A non-archimedean Gurarii Banach space $G$ over a non-archimedean valued field $K$ is constructed, i.e. a non-archimedean Banach space $G$ of countable type which is of almost universal disposition for the class $U_{FNA}$. This means: for every isometry $g : X \to Y$ , where $Y \in U_{FNA}$ and $X$ is a subspace of $G$, and every $\varepsilon \in (0,1)$ there exists an $\varepsilon$-isometry $f : Y \to G$ such that $f(g(x)) = x$ for all $x \in X$. We show that all non-archimedean Banach spaces of almost univers…
We prove that a non ergodic Banach space must be near Hilbert. In particular, $\ell_p$ ($2<p<\infty$) is ergodic. This reinforces the conjecture that $\ell_2$ is the only non ergodic Banach space. As an application of our criterion for ergodicity, we prove that there is no separable Banach space which is complementably universal for the class of all subspaces of $\ell_p$, for $1\leq p <2$. This solves a question left open by W. B. Johnson and A. Szankowski in 1976.
Hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces may have density at most continuum (Plichko-Yost, Argyros-Tolias). In this paper we show that this cannot be proved for indecomposable Banach spaces. We provide the first example of an indecomposable Banach space of density two to continuum. The space exists consistently, is of the form C(K) and it has few operators in the sense that any bounded linear operator T on C(K) satisfies T(f)=gf+S(f) for every f in C(K), where g is in C(K) and S is weakly compact (strictly singular).
This paper deals with the following types of problems: Assume a Banach space $X$ has some property (P). Can it be embedded into some Banach space $Z$ with a finite dimensional decomposition having property (P), or more generally, having a property related to (P)? Secondly, given a class of Banach spaces, does there exist a Banach space in this class, or in a closely related one, which is universal for this class?
We investigate for which compactifications $γω$ of the discrete space of natural numbers $ω$, the natural copy of the Banach space $c_0$ is complemented in $C(γω)$. We show, in particular, that the separability of the remainder of $γω$ is neither sufficient nor necessary for $c_0$ being complemented in $C(γω)$ (for the latter our result is proved under the continuum hypothesis). We analyse, in this context, compactifications of $ω$ related to embeddings of the measure algebra into $P(ω)/fin$. We also prove that a Banach space $C(K)$ contains a rich family of complemented copies of $c_0$ whenev…
For each ordinal $α<ω_1$, we prove the existence of a space with a basis and Szlenk index $ω^{α+1}$ which is universal for the class of spaces with Szlenk index not exceeding $ω^α$. Our proof involves developing a characterization of which Banach spaces embed into spaces with an FDD with upper Schreier space estimates.
We prove the existence of free objects in certain subcategories of Banach lattices, including $p$-convex Banach lattices, Banach lattices with upper $p$-estimates, and AM-spaces. From this we immediately deduce that projectively universal objects exist in each of these subcategories, extending results of Leung, Li, Oikhberg and Tursi (\emph{Israel J.\ Math.}~2019). In the $p$-con\-vex and AM-space cases, we are able to explicitly identify the norms of the free Banach lattices, and we conclude by investigating the structure of these norms in connection with nonlinear $p$-summing maps.
A Banach space $E$ is said to be injective if for every Banach space $X$ and every subspace $Y$ of $X$ every operator $t:Y\to E$ has an extension $T:X\to E$. We say that $E$ is $\aleph$-injective (respectively, universally $\aleph$-injective) if the preceding condition holds for Banach spaces $X$ (respectively $Y$) with density less than a given uncountable cardinal $\aleph$. We perform a study of $\aleph$-injective and universally $\aleph$-injective Banach spaces which extends the basic case where $\aleph=\aleph_1$ is the first uncountable cardinal. When dealing with the corresponding "isomet…
We prove that in any Banach space the set of windows in which a rectifiable curve resembles two or more straight line segments is quantitatively small with constants that are independent of the curve, the dimension of the space, and the choice of norm. Together with Part I, this completes the proof of the necessary half of the Analyst's Traveling Salesman theorem with sharp exponent in uniformly convex spaces.
