If a Banach space has an unconditional basis it either contains a continuum of non isomorphic subspaces or is isomorphic to its square and hyperplanes and satisfies other regularity properties. An HI Banach space contains a continuum of non isomorphic subspaces.
We study isomorphic universality of Banach spaces of a given density and a number of pairwise non-isomorphic models in the same class. We show that in the Cohen model the isomorphic universality number for Banach spaces of density $\aleph_1$ is $\aleph_2$, and analogous results are true for other cardinals (Theorem 1.2(1)) and that adding just one Cohen real to any model destroys the old universality of Banach spaces of density $\aleph_1$ (Theorem 1.5). Moreover, adding one Cohen real adds a weakly compactly generated Banach space of density $\aleph_1$ which does not embed into any Banach spac…
A Banach space contains either a minimal subspace or a continuum of incomparable subspaces. General structure results for analytic equivalence relations are applied in the context of Banach spaces to show that if $E_0$ does not reduce to isomorphism of the subspaces of a space, in particular, if the subspaces of the space admit a classification up to isomorphism by real numbers, then any subspace with an unconditional basis is isomorphic to its square and hyperplanes and has an isomorphically homogeneous subsequence.
We prove three new dichotomies for Banach spaces à la W.T. Gowers' dichotomies. The three dichotomies characterise respectively the spaces having no minimal subspaces, having no subsequentially minimal basic sequences, and having no subspaces crudely finitely representable in all of their subspaces. We subsequently use these results to make progress on Gowers' program of classifying Banach spaces by finding characteristic spaces present in every space. Also, the results are used to embed any partial order of size $\aleph_1$ into the subspaces of any space without a minimal subspace ordered by …
We give a simple and explicit example of a complex Banach space which is not isomorphic to its complex conjugate, and hence of two real-isomorphic spaces which are not complex-isomorphic.
We construct a family of separable Hilbertian operator spaces, such that the relation of complete isomorphism between the subspaces of each member of this family is complete $\ks$. We also investigate some interesting properties of completely unconditional bases of the spaces from this family. In the Banach space setting, we construct a space for which the relation of isometry of subspaces is equivalent to equality of real numbers.
In this paper we present new characterizations of Banach spaces whose duals are isomorphic to $l_{1}(Γ),$ extending results of Stegall, Lewis-Stegall and Cilia-D'Anna-Gutiérrez.
We consider a Banach space, which comes naturally from c0 and it appears in the literature, and we prove that this space has the fixed point property for non-expansive mappings.
A Banach space with a Schauder basis is said to be $α$-minimal for some countable ordinal $α$ if, for any two block subspaces, the Bourgain embeddability index of one into the other is at least $α$. We prove a dichotomy that characterises when a Banach space has an $α$-minimal subspace, which contributes to the ongoing project, initiated by W. T. Gowers, of classifying separable Banach spaces by identifying characteristic subspaces.
In recent decades, topology has come to play an increasing role in some geometric aspects of Banach space theory. The class of so-called $w^*$-locally relatively compact sets was introduced recently by Fonf, Pallares, Troyanski and the author, and were found to be a useful topological tool in the theory of isomorphic smoothness and polyhedrality in Banach spaces. We develop the topological theory of these sets and present some Banach space applications.
Let $(x_n)$ be a sequence in a Banach space $X$ which does not converge in norm, and let $E$ be an isomorphically precisely norming set for $X$ such that \[ \sum_n |x^*(x_{n+1}-x_n)|< \infty, \; \forall x^* \in E. \qquad (*) \] Then there exists a subsequence of $(x_n)$ which spans an isomorphically polyhedral Banach space. It follows immediately from results of V. Fonf that the converse is also true: If a separable Banach space $Y$ is a separable isomorphically polyhedral then there exists a non norm convergent sequence $(x_n)$ which spans $Y$ and there exists an isomorphically precisely norm…
In this paper Hilbert spaces are characterized among Banach spaces in terms of transitivity with respect to nicely behaved subgroups of the isometry group. For example, the following result is typical here: If X is a real Banach space isomorphic to a Hilbert space and convex-transitive with respect to the isometric finite-dimensional perturbations of the identity, then X is already isometric to a Hilbert space.
Recent developments in Banach space theory provided unexpected examples of unital Banach algebras that are isomorphic to Calkin algebras of Banach spaces, however no example of a unital Banach algebra that cannot be realised as a~Calkin algebra has been found so far. This naturally led to the question of possible limitations of such assignments. In the present note we provide examples of unital Banach algebras meeting the necessary density condition for being the Calkin algebra of a separable Banach space that are not isomorphic to Calkin algebras of such spaces, nonetheless. The examples may …
Ordered vector spaces E and F are said to be order isomorphic if there is a (not necessarily linear) bijection between them that preserves order. We investigate some situations under which an order isomorphism between two Banach lattices implies the persistence of some linear lattice structure. For instance, it is shown that if a Banach lattice E is order isomorphic to C(K) for some compact Hausdorff space K, then E is (linearly) isomorphic to C(K) as a Banach lattice. Similar results hold for Banach lattices order isomorphic to c_0, and for Banach lattices that contain a closed sublattice ord…
This paper is concerned with the isomorphic structure of the Banach space $\ell_\infty/c_0$ and how it depends on combinatorial tools whose existence is consistent but not provable from the usual axioms of ZFC. Our main global result is that it is consistent that $\ell_\infty/c_0$ does not have an orthogonal \break $\ell_\infty$-decomposition that is, it is not of the form $\ell_\infty(X)$ for any Banach space $X$. The main local result is that it is consistent that $\ell_\infty(c_0(\mathfrak{c}))$ does not embed isomorphically into $\ell_\infty/c_0$, where $\mathfrak{c}$ is the cardinality of…
We are interested in the question when a Banach space $X$ with an unconditional basis is isomorphic (as a Banach space) to an order-continuous nonatomic Banach lattice. We show that this is the case if and only if $X$ is isomorphic as a Banach space with $X(\ell_2)$. This and results of J. Bourgain are used to show that spaces $H_1(\bold T^n)$ are not isomorphic to nonatomic Banach lattices. We also show that tent spaces introduced in \cite{4} are isomorphic to Rad $H_1$.
We study properties of representing and absolutely representing systems of subspaces in Banach spaces. We also present sufficient conditions for the system of subspaces to be a representing system of subspaces.
We refine Amitsur's theory of radicals in complete lattices and apply the obtained results to the theory of radicals in the lattices of subspaces of Banach spaces and in the lattices of ideals of Banach and C*-algebras and of Banach Lie algebras.
We extend a theorem of Kato on similarity for sequences of projections in Hilbert spaces to the case of isomorphic Schauder decompositions in certain Banach spaces. To this end we use $\ell_Ψ$-Hilbertian and $\infty$-Hilbertian Schauder decompositions instead of orthogonal Schauder decompositions, generalize the concept of an orthogonal Schauder decomposition in a Hilbert space and introduce the class of spaces with Schauder-Orlicz decompositions. Furthermore, we generalize the notions of type, cotype, infratype and $M$-cotype of a Banach space and study the properties of unconditional Schaude…
We prove that a Hilbert space frame $\fti$ contains a Riesz basis if every subfamily $\ftj , J \subseteq I ,$ is a frame for its closed span. Secondly we give a new characterization of Banach spaces which do not have any subspace isomorphic to $c_0$. This result immediately leads to an improvement of a recent theorem of Holub concerning frames consisting of a Riesz basis plus finitely many elements.
A Banach space is polyhedral if the unit ball of each of its finite dimensional subspaces is a polyhedron. It is known that a polyhedral Banach space has a separable dual and is $c_0$-saturated, i.e., each closed infinite dimensional subspace contains an isomorph of $c_0$. In this paper, we show that the Orlicz sequence space $h_M$ is isomorphic to a polyhedral Banach space if $\lim_{t\to 0}M(Kt)/M(t) = \infty$ for some $K < \infty$. We also construct an Orlicz sequence space $h_M$ which is $c_0$-saturated, but which is not isomorphic to any polyhedral Banach space. This shows that being $c_0$…
A separable Banach space $X$ is said to be finitely determined if for each separable space $Y$ such that $X$ is finitely representable (f.r.) in $Y$ and $Y$ is f.r. in $X$ then $Y$ is isometric to $X$. We provide a direct proof (without model theory) of the fact that every finitely determined space $X$ (isometrically) contains every (separable) space $Y$ which is finitely representable in $X$. We also point out how a similar argument proves the Krivine-Maurey theorem on stable Banach spaces, and give the model theoretic interpretations of some results.
A quojection (projective limit of Banach spaces with surjective linking mappings) without infinite dimensional Banach subspaces is constructed. This results answers a question posed by G.Metafune and V.B.Moscatelli.
For every $ 1 < p < \infty $ an isomorphically polyhedral Banach space $E_p$ is constructed having an unconditional basis and admitting a quotient isomorphic to $\ell_p$. It is also shown that $E_p$ is not isomorphic to a subspace of a $C(K)$ space for every countable and compact metric space $K$.
We prove that every Banach space containing a subspace isomorphic to $\co$ fails the fixed point property. The proof is based on an amalgamation approach involving a suitable combination of known results and techniques, including James's distortion theorem, Ramsey's combinatorial theorem, Brunel-Sucheston spreading model techniques and Dowling, Lennard and Turett's fixed point methodology employed in their characterization of weak compactness in $\co$.
For a Banach space $X$ we shall denote the set of all closed subspaces of $X$ by $G(X)$. In some kinds of problems it turned out to be useful to endow $G(X)$ with a topology. The main purpose of the present paper is to survey results on two the most common topologies on $G(X)$.
For every $n\geq 3,$ we construct an $n$-dimensional Banach space which is isometric to a subspace of $L_{1/2}$ but is not isometric to a subspace of $L_1.$ The isomorphic version of this problem (posed by S. Kwapien in 1969) is still open. Another example gives a Banach subspace of $L_{1/4}$ which does not embed isometrically in $L_{1/2}.$ Note that, from the isomorphic point of view, all the spaces $L_q$ with $q<1$ have the same Banach subspaces.
An absolutely representing family of subspaces is a natural generalization of an absolutely representing system of subspaces and absolutely representing system (of elements). We obtain necessary an (or) sufficient conditions for a family of subspaces to be an absolutely representing family of subspaces and study properties of absolutely representing families of subspaces in Banach spaces. As an example, we study families of subspaces spanned by exponents.
We investigate rich subspaces of $L_1$ and deduce an interpolation property of Sidon sets. We also present examples of rich separable subspaces of nonseparable Banach spaces and we study the Daugavet property of tensor products.
An isomorphic (\ell_1)-predual space (X) is constructed such that neither (X) is isomorphic to a subspace of (c_0), nor (C(ω^ω)) is isomorphic to a subspace of (X). It follows that (X) is not isomorphic to a complemented subspace of a (C(K)) space.
We analyse several examples of separable Banach spaces, some of them new, and relate them to several dichotomies obtained in the previous paper Banach spaces without minimal subspaces, by classifying them according to which side of the dichotomies they fall. This paper may be seen as a more empirical continuation of Banach spaces without minimal subspaces, in which our stress is on the study of examples for the new classes of Banach spaces considered in that work.
We prove that, for each Banach space $X$ which is isomorphic to its hyperplanes, the Lipschitz-free spaces over $X$ and over its sphere are isomorphic.
For every Banach space $Z$ with a shrinking unconditional basis satisfying upper $p$-estimates for some $p > 1$, an isomorphically polyhedral Banach space is constructed having an unconditional basis and admitting a quotient isomorphic to $Z$.
The main result: the dual of separable Banach space $X$ contains a total subspace which is not norming over any infinite dimensional subspace of $X$ if and only if $X$ has a nonquasireflexive quotient space with the strictly singular quotient mapping.
The present paper contributes to the ongoing programme of quantification of isomorphic Banach space theory focusing on Pełczyński's classical work on dual Banach spaces containing $L_{1}$ ($=L_{1}[0,1]$) and the Hagler--Stegall characterisation of dual spaces containing complemented copies of $L_{1}$. We prove the following quantitative version of the Hagler--Stegall theorem asserting that for a Banach space $X$ the following statements are equivalent: $\bullet$ $X$ contains almost isometric copies of $(\bigoplus_{n=1}^{\infty} \ell_{\infty}^{n})_{\ell_1}$, $\bullet$ for all $\varepsilon>0$, $…
Let $\A$ be a semisimple unital commutative Banach algebra. We say that a Banach $\A$-module $M$ is nice if every proper closed submodule of $M$ is contained in a closed submodule of $M$ of codimension 1. We provide examples of nice and non-nice modules.
We show that a complemented subspace of a locally convex direct sum of an uncountable collection of Banach spaces is a locally convex direct sum of complemented subspaces of countable subsums. As a corollary we prove that a complemented subspace of a locally convex direct sum of arbitrary collection of $\ell_{1}(Γ)$-spaces is isomorphic to a locally convex direct sum of $\ell_{1}(Γ)$-spaces.
Let $X$ be a left introverted subspace of dual of a Banach algebra. We study $Z_t(X^*),$ the topological center of Banach algebra $X^*$. We fined the topological center of $(X\cA)^*$, when $\cA$ has a bounded right approximate identity and $\cA\subseteq X^*.$ So we introduce a new notation of amenability for a dual Banach algebra $\cal A$. A dual Banach algebra $\cal A$ is weakly Connes-amenable if the first $weak^*-$continuous cohomology group of $\cal A$ with coefficients in $\cal A$ is zero; i.e., $H^1_{w^*}(\cal A, \cal A)=\{o\}$. We study the weak Connes-amenability of some dual Banach al…
Given a Banach space $E$, we ask which closed subspaces may be realised as the kernel of a bounded operator $E \rightarrow E$. We prove some positive results which imply in particular that when $E$ is separable every closed subspace is a kernel. Moreover, we show that there exists a Banach space $E$ which contains a closed subspace that cannot be realized as the kernel of any bounded operator on $E$. This implies that the Banach algebra $\mathcal{B}(E)$ of bounded operators on $E$ fails to be weak*-topologically left Noetherian. The Banach space $E$ that we use is the dual of Wark's non-separa…
In this note we study Banach spaces of traces of real polynomials on $\mathbb R^n$ to compact subsets equipped with supremum norms from the point of view of Geometric Functional Analysis.
It is proved that there exist complemented subspaces of countable topological products (locally convex direct sums) of Banach spaces which cannot be represented as topological products (locally convex direct sums) of Banach spaces. (This is a revised version of the paper by the same name formerly contained in the file ostrovskiicompsbsp.atx.)
A space $X$ is said to be hereditarily indecomposable if no two (infinite dimensional) subspaces of $X$ are in a direct sum. In this paper, we show that if $X$ is a complex hereditarily indecomposable Banach space, then every operator from a subspace $Y$ of $X$ to $X$ is of the form $λI + S$, where $I$ is the inclusion map and $S$ is strictly singular.
Let $X$ be a Banach space, and $M,N$ be two closed subspaces of $X$. We present several necessary and sufficient conditions for the closedness of $M+N$ ($M+N$ is not necessarily direct sum).
We study the problem of the existence of a common algebraic complement for a pair of closed subspaces of a Banach space. We prove the following two characterizations: (1) The pairs of subspaces of a Banach space with a common complement coincide with those pairs which are isomorphic to a pair of graphs of bounded linear operators between two other Banach spaces. (2) The pairs of subspaces of a Banach space X with a common complement coincide with those pairs for which there exists an involution S on X exchanging the two subspaces, such that I+S is bounded from below on their union. Moreover we…
In article is constructed a wide couple of pairwice non-isomorphic separable superreflexive Banach spaces E that are subspace homogeneous. Their conjugates are quotient homogeneous. None of this couple neither isomorphic to its Cartesian square nor has the approximation property. At the same time, any such E is isomorphic to E+ E+ W for some Banach space W and, hence, solves the Schroeder - Bernstein problem.
A Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis is defined to have the restricted quotient hereditarily indecomposable (QHI) property if $X/Y$ is hereditarily indecomposable (HI) for any infinite codimensional subspace $Y$ with a successive finite-dimensional decomposition on the basis of $X$. A reflexive space with the restricted QHI property is in particular HI, has HI dual, and is saturated with subspaces which are HI and have HI dual. The following dichotomy theorem is proved: any infinite dimensional Banach space contains a quotient of subspace which either has an unconditional basis, or has the…
We describe the spectrum of weighted $d$-isomorphisms of Banach lattices restricted on closed subspaces that are "rich" enough to preserve some "memory" of the order structure of the original lattice. The examples include (but are not limited to) weighted isometries of Hardy spaces on the polydisk and unit ball in $\mathds{C}^n$.
We give an intrinsic characterisation of the separable reflexive Banach spaces that embed into separable reflexive spaces with an unconditional basis all of whose normalised block sequences with the same growth rate are equivalent. This uses methods of E. Odell and T. Schlumprecht.
We show that, if $X$ is a closed subspace of a Banach space $E$ and $Z$ is a closed subspace of $E^*$ such that $Z$ is norming for $X$ and $X$ is total over $Z$ (as well as $X$ is norming for $Z$ and $Z$ is total over $X$), then $X$ and the pre-annihilator of $Z$ are complemented in $E$ whenever $Z$ is $w^*$-closed or $X$ is reflexive.
This paper deals with study of Birkhoff-James orthogonality of a linear operator to a subspace of operators defined between arbitrary Banach spaces. In case the domain space is reflexive and the subspace is finite dimensional we obtain a complete characterization. For arbitrary Banach spaces, we obtain the same under some additional conditions. For arbitrary Hilbert space $ \mathbb{H},$ we also study orthogonality to subspace of the space of linear operators $L(\mathbb{H}), $ both with respect to operator norm as well as numerical radius norm.
It is proved that a commutative algebra $A$ of operators in a reflexive real Banach space has an invariant subspace if each operator $T\in A$ satisfies the condition $$\|1- \varepsilon T^2\|_e \le 1 + o(\varepsilon) \text{ when } \varepsilon\searrow 0,$$ where $\|\cdot\|_e$ is the essential norm. This implies the existence of an invariant subspace for every commutative family of essentially selfadjoint operators in a real Hilbert space.
