A reflexive Banach space $X$ with a basis $(e_i)$ is constructed having the property that every monotone basis is block finitely representable in each block basis of $X$.
Our goal is to present a new shorter proof for the maximal monotonicity of the Minkowski sum of two maximal monotone multi-valued operators defined in a reflexive Banach space under the classical interiority condition involving their domains.
In a real Banach space, we first prove that the sum of a monotone operator of type (FPV) and maximal monotone operator Rockafellar's constraint qualification is maximal. This prove leads to the solution of most interesting long-time outstanding problem in monotone operator theory is the sum problem.
Let $E$ be a uniformly smooth and uniformly convex real Banach space and $E^*$ be its dual space. Suppose $A : E\rightarrow E^*$ is bounded, strongly monotone and satisfies the range condition such that $A^{-1}(0)\neq \emptyset$. Inspired by Alber [2], we introduce Lyapunov functions and use the new geometric properties of Banach spaces to show the strong convergence of an iterative algorithm to the solution of $Ax=0$.
It was proved by Argyros and Dodos that, for many classes $ C $ of separable Banach spaces which share some property $ P $, there exists an isomorphically universal space that satisfies $ P $ as well. We introduce a variant of their amalgamation technique which provides an isometrically universal space in the case that $ C $ consists of spaces with a monotone Schauder basis. For example, we prove that if $ C $ is a set of separable Banach spaces which is analytic with respect to the Effros-Borel structure and every $ X \in C $ is reflexive and has a monotone Schauder basis, then there exists a…
It is shown that if a Banach space X has the weak Banach-Saks property and the weak fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings and Y satisfies property asymptotic (P) (which is weaker than the condition WCS(Y)>1), then the direct sum of X and Y endowed with a strictly monotone norm enjoys the weak fixed point property. The same conclusion is valid if X admits a 1-unconditional basis.
We extend the well-known criterion of Lotz for the dual Radon-Nikodym property (RNP) of Banach lattices to finitely generated Banach $C(K)$-modules and Banach $C(K)$-modules of finite multiplicity. Namely, we prove that if $X$ is a Banach space from one of these classes then its Banach dual $X^\star$ has the RNP iff $X$ does not contain a closed subspace isomorphic to $\ell^1$.
We augment the dimension of the Euclidean space by one and the Picard iteration of a contraction by a simple iteration on the real line such that the resulting iteration becomes monotone increasing and bounded with respect to the order defined by the Lorentz cone of the augmented space. This provides a different way of showing the convergence of the Picard iteration of a contraction, exhibiting the strong relationship between the Banach fixed point principle and the ordering structure of the Euclidean space ordered by the Lorentz cone.
Some new examples of K-monotone couples of the type (X, X(w)), where X is a symmetric space on [0, 1] and w is a weight on [0, 1], are presented. Based on the property of the w-decomposability of a symmetric space we show that, if a weight w changes sufficiently fast, all symmetric spaces X with non-trivial Boyd indices such that the Banach couple (X, X(w)) is K-monotone belong to the class of ultrasymmetric Orlicz spaces. If, in addition, the fundamental function of X is t^{1/p} for some p \in [1, \infty], then X = L_p. At the same time a Banach couple (X, X(w)) may be K-monotone for some non…
In this paper, we unify the theory of SSD spaces and the theory of strongly representable sets, and we apply our results to the theory of the various classes of maximally monotone sets. In particular, we prove that type (ED), dense type, type (D), type (NI) and strongly representable are equivalent concepts and, consequently, that the known properties of strongly representable sets follow from known properties of sets of type (ED).
In this paper, we construct maximally monotone operators that are not of Gossez's dense-type (D) in many nonreflexive spaces. Many of these operators also fail to possess the Brønsted-Rockafellar (BR) property. Using these operators, we show that the partial inf-convolution of two BC--functions will not always be a BC--function. This provides a negative answer to a challenging question posed by Stephen Simons. Among other consequences, we deduce that every Banach space which contains an isomorphic copy of the James space $\mathbf{J}$ or its dual $\mathbf{J}^*$, or $c_0$ or its dual $\ell^1$, a…
We discuss "Banach SN spaces", which include Hilbert spaces, negative Hilbert spaces, and the product of any real Banach space with its dual. We introduce "L-positive" sets, which generalize monotone multifunctions from a Banach space into its dual. We introduce the concepts of "$r_L$-density" and its specialization "quasidensity": the closed quasidense monotone multifunctions from a Banach space into its dual form a (generally) strict subset of the maximally monotone ones, though all surjective maximally monotone and all maximally monotone multifunctions on a reflexive space are quasidense. W…
In this paper, we study properties of ultramaximally monotone operators. We characterize the interior and the closure of the range of an ultramaximally monotone operator. We establish the Brezis--Haraux condition in the setting of a general Banach space. Moreover, we show that every ultramaximally monotone operator is of type (NA). We also provide some sufficient conditions for a Banach space to be reflexive by a linear continuous and ultramaximally monotone operator.
We give, for general Banach spaces, a characterization of the sequential lower limit of maximal monotone operators of type (D) and prove its representability. As a consequence, using a recent extension of the Moreau-Yosida regularization for type (D) operators, we extend to general Banach spaces the definitions of the variational sum of monotone operators and the variational composition of monotone operators with continuous linear mappings, and we prove that both operators are representable.
Let $G$ be a locally compact group. We prove that the augmentation ideal in $L^1(G)$ is (algebraically) finitely-generated as a left ideal if and only if $G$ is finite. We then investigate weighted versions of this result, as well as a version for semigroup algebras. Weighted measure algebras are also considered. We are motivated by a recent conjecture of Dales and Żelazko, which states that a unital Banach algebra in which every maximal left ideal is finitely-generated is necessarily finite-dimensional. We prove that this conjecture holds for many of the algebras considered. Finally, we use t…
In this paper we provide some extension results for n-cyclically monotone operators in reflexive Banach spaces by making use of the Fenchel duality. In this way we give a positive answer to a question posed by Bauschke and Wang in [4].
This is a 30 page set of lecture notes, in Plain TeX, which were prepared for and presented as a series of lectures (10 1/2 hours over two weeks) at the 2nd Summer School on Banach Spaces, Related Areas and Applications in Prague and Paseky, Czech Republic, during August, 1993. They consist of a largely self-contained exposition of both classical and recent basic facts about maximal monotone operators on Banach spaces, motivated in part by the goal of highlighting several fundamental properties of such operators which remain open questions in nonreflexive Banach spaces.
In the paper is considered two problems on extension of operators whose range space for the first problem (or domain space for the second one) belongs to the fixed class of finite equivalence, which is generated by a given Banach space $X$. Both problems are considered in two variants: isometric and isomorphic ones. Received a full solution of the first problem and the solution, close to final one for the second problem.

The main result of this paper is a fixed point result relating the spreading model structure of Banach spaces and Schauder basis with not too large basis constant. As a striking consequence, we deduce that every super-reflexive space has the fixed point property thus solving a long-standing open question in metric fixed point theory.
We extend the well known criteria of reflexivity of Banach lattices due to Lozanovsky and Lotz to the class of finitely generated Banach $C(K)$- modules. Namely we prove that a finitely generated Banach $C(K)$-module is reflexive if and only if it does not contain any subspace isomorphic to either $l^1$ or $c_0$.
We apply the metrical approach to Sobolev spaces, which arise in various evolution PDEs. Functions from those spaces are defined on an interval and take values in a family of Banach spaces. In this case we adapt the definition of Newtonian spaces. For a monotone family, we show the existence of weak derivative, obtain an isomorphism to the standard Sobolev space, and provide some scalar characteristics.
In this work we are concerned with maximality of monotone operators representable by certain convex functions in non-reflexive Banach spaces. We also prove that these maximal monotone operators satisfy a Bronsted-Rockafellar type property. We show that if a function in XxX^* and its conjugate are above the duality product in their respective domains, then this function represents a maximal monotone operator.
We are concerned with surjectivity of perturbations of maximal monotone operators in non-reflexive Banach spaces. While in a reflexive setting, a classical surjectivity result due to Rockafellar gives a necessary and sufficient condition to maximal monotonicity, in a non-reflexive space we characterize maximality using a ``enlarged'' version of the duality mapping, introduced previously by Gossez.
We continue the study of Uniformly Finitely Extensible Banach spaces (in short, UFO) initiated in Moreno-Plichko, \emph{On automorphic Banach spaces}, Israel J. Math. 169 (2009) 29--45 and Castillo-Plichko, \emph{Banach spaces in various positions.} J. Funct. Anal. 259 (2010) 2098-2138. We show that they have the Uniform Approximation Property of Pełczyński and Rosenthal and are compactly extensible. We will also consider their connection with the automorphic space problem of Lindenstrauss and Rosenthal --do there exist automorphic spaces other than $c_0(I)$ and $\ell_2(I)$?-- showing that a s…
Classes of Banach spaces that are finitely, strongly finitely or elementary equivalent are introduced. On sets of these classes topologies are defined in such a way that sets of defined classes become compact totally disconnected topological spaces. Results are used in the problem of synthesis of Banach spaces, and to describe omittable spaces that are defined below.
It is well known that many problems in image recovery, signal processing, and machine learning can be modeled as finding zeros of the sum of maximal monotone and Lipschitz continuous monotone operators. Many papers have studied forward-backward splitting methods for finding zeros of the sum of two monotone operators in Hilbert spaces. Most of the proposed splitting methods in the literature have been proposed for the sum of maximal monotone and inverse-strongly monotone operators in Hilbert spaces. In this paper, we consider splitting methods for finding zeros of the sum of maximal monotone op…
We study some properties of the randomized series and their applications to the geometric structure of Banach spaces. For $n\ge 2$ and $1<p<\infty$, it is shown that $\ell_\infty^n$ is representable in a Banach space $X$ if and only if it is representable in the Lebesgue-Bochner $L_p(X)$. New criteria for various convexity properties in Banach spaces are also studied. It is proved that a Banach lattice $E$ is uniformly monotone if and only if its $p$-convexification $E^{(p)}$ is uniformly convex and that a Köthe function space $E$ is upper locally uniformly monotone if and only if its $p$-conv…
The main purpose of the paper is to prove the following results: Let $A$ be a locally finite metric space whose finite subsets admit uniformly bilipschitz embeddings into a Banach space $X$. Then $A$ admits a bilipschitz embedding into $X$. Let $A$ be a locally finite metric space whose finite subsets admit uniformly coarse embeddings into a Banach space $X$. Then $A$ admits a coarse embedding into $X$. These results generalize previously known results of the same type due to Brown-Guentner (2005), Baudier (2007), Baudier-Lancien (2008), and the author (2006, 2009). One of the main steps in th…
Recently it was introduced the so-called Bishop-Phelps-Bollob{á}s property for positive operators between Banach lattices. In this paper we prove that the pair $(C_0(L), Y) $ has the Bishop-Phelps--Bollob{á}s property for positive operators, for any locally compact Hausdorff topological space $L$, whenever $Y$ is a uniformly monotone Banach lattice with a weak unit. In case that the space $C_0(L)$ is separable, the same statement holds for any uniformly monotone Banach lattice $Y .$ We also show the following partial converse of the main result. In case that $Y$ is a strictly monotone Banach l…
Maximal monotone operators on a Banach space into its dual can be represented by convex functions bounded below by the duality product. It is natural to ask under which conditions a convex function represents a maximal monotone operator. A satisfactory answer, in the context of reflexive Banach spaces, has been obtained some years ago. Recently, a partial result on non-reflexive Banach spaces was obtained. In this work we study some others conditions which guarantee that a convex function represents a maximal monotone operator in non-reflexive Banach spaces.
This paper is primarily concerned with the problem of maximality for the sum $A+B$ and composition $L^{*}ML$ in non-reflexive Banach space settings under qualifications constraints involving the domains of $A,B,M$. Here $X$, $Y$ are Banach spaces with duals $X^{*}$, $Y^{*}$, $A,B:X\rightrightarrows X^{*}$, $M:Y\rightrightarrows Y^{*}$ are multi-valued maximal monotone operators, and $L:X\to Y$ is linear bounded. Based on the Fitzpatrick function, new characterizations for the maximality of an operator as well as simpler proofs, improvements of previously known results, and several new results …
In this paper, we unify the theory of SSD spaces, part of the theory of strongly representable multifunctions, and the theory of the equivalence of various classes of maximally monotone multifunctions.
In the context of general Banach spaces characterizations for the maximal monotonicity of operators with non-empty domain interior as well as stronger continuity properties for such operators are provided.
During the 1970s Brézis and Browder presented a now classical characterization of maximal monotonicity of monotone linear relations in reflexive spaces. In this paper, we extend and refine their result to a general Banach space.
In this paper, we deal with the existence of $ω$-periodic mild solutions for the abstract evolution equation with delay in an ordered Banach space $E$ $$u'(t)+Au(t)=F(t,u(t),u(t-τ)),\ \ \ \ t\in\R,$$ where $A:D(A)\subset E\rightarrow E$ is a closed linear operator and $-A$ generates a positive $C_{0}$-semigroup $T(t)(t\geq0)$, $F:\R\times E\times E\rightarrow E$ is a continuous mapping which is $ω$-periodic in $t$, and $τ\geq0$ is a constant. Under some weaker assumptions, we construct monotone iterative method for the delayed evolution equation periodic problems, and obtain the existence of m…
We prove that the class of positive operators from $L_\infty (μ)$ to $Y$ has the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for any positive measure $μ$, whenever $Y$ is a uniformly monotone Banach lattice with a weak unit. The same result also holds for the pair $(c_0, Y)$ for any uniformly monotone Banach lattice $Y.$ Further we show that these results are optimal in case that $Y$ is strictly monotone.
We study several properties and applications of the ultrapower $M_{\mathcal U}$ of a metric space $M$. We prove that the Lipschitz-free space $\mathcal F(M_{\mathcal U})$ is finitely representable in $\mathcal F(M)$. We also characterize the metric spaces that are finitely Lipschitz representable in a Banach space as those that biLipschitz embed into an ultrapower of the Banach space. Thanks to this link, we obtain that if $M$ is finitely Lipschitz representable in a Banach space $X$, then $\mathcal F(M)$ is finitely representable in $\mathcal F(X)$. We apply these results to the study of coty…
We prove that if $ C $ is a family of separable Banach spaces which is analytic with respect to the Effros-Borel structure and none member of $ C $ is isometrically universal for all separable Banach spaces, then there exists a separable Banach space with a monotone Schauder basis which is isometrically universal for $ C $ but still not for all separable Banach spaces. We also establish an analogous result for the class of strictly convex spaces.
Enlargements have proven to be useful tools for studying maximally monotone mappings. It is therefore natural to ask in which cases the enlargement does not change the original mapping. Svaiter has recently characterized non-enlargeable operators in reflexive Banach spaces and has also given some partial results in the nonreflexive case. In the present paper, we provide another characterization of non-enlargeable operators in nonreflexive Banach spaces under a closedness assumption on the graph. Furthermore, and still for general Banach spaces, we present a new proof of the maximality of the s…
A separable Banach space $X$ is said to be finitely determined if for each separable space $Y$ such that $X$ is finitely representable (f.r.) in $Y$ and $Y$ is f.r. in $X$ then $Y$ is isometric to $X$. We provide a direct proof (without model theory) of the fact that every finitely determined space $X$ (isometrically) contains every (separable) space $Y$ which is finitely representable in $X$. We also point out how a similar argument proves the Krivine-Maurey theorem on stable Banach spaces, and give the model theoretic interpretations of some results.
In this paper, the Pazy's Fixed Point Theorems of monotone $α-$nonexpansive mapping $T$ are proved in a uniformly convex Banach space $E$ with the partial order "$\leq$". That is, we obtain that the fixed point set of $T$ with respect to the partial order "$\leq$" is nonempty whenever the Picard iteration $\{T^nx_0\}$ is bounded for some initial point $x_0$ with $x_0\leq Tx_0$ or $Tx_0\leq x_0$. When restricting the demain of $T$ to the cone $P$, a monotone $α-$nonexpansive mapping $T$ has at least a fixed point if and only if the Picard iteration $\{T^n0\}$ is bounbed. Furthermore, with the h…
In this paper, the split common null point problem in two Banach spaces is considered. Then, using the generalized resolvents of maximal monotone operators and the generalized projections and an infinite family of nonexpansive mappings, a strong convergence theorem for finding a solution of the split common null point problem in two Banach spaces in the presence of a sequence of errors will be proved.
We study the relationship between exact interpolation spaces for positive, linear operators, for order preserving, Lipschitz continuous operators, and for positive Gagliardo-Peetre operators, and exact partially $K$-monotone spaces in interpolation couples of compatible Banach lattices. By general Banach lattice theory we recover a characterisation of exact interpolation spaces for order preserving, Lipschitz continuous operators in the couple $(L^1,L^\infty )$ due to Bénilan and Crandall.
We consider a monotone increasing operator in an ordered Banach space having $u_-$ and $u_+$ as a strong super- and subsolution, respectively. In contrast with the well studied case $u_+ < u_-$, we suppose that $u_- < u_+$. Under the assumption that the order cone is normal and minihedral, we prove the existence of a fixed point located in the ordered interval $[u_-,u_+].$
Let $(X,\|.\|)$ be a Banach space. Let $C$ be a nonempty, bounded, closed, and convex subset of $X$ and $T: C \rightarrow C$ be a $G$-monotone nonexpansive mapping. In this work, it is shown that the Mann iteration sequence defined by $$x_{n+1} = t_n T(x_n) + (1-t_n)x_n, \, n = 1, 2, \cdots$$ can be proved the existence of a fixed point of $G$-monotone nonexpansive mappings.
Based on the recently introduced uniform $λ-$adjustment for closed subspaces of Banach spaces we extend the concept of the strictly singular and finitely strictly singular operators to the sequences of closed subspaces and operators in Banach spaces and prove theorems about lower semi--Fredholm stability. We also state some new open questions related to strict singularity and the geometry of Banach spaces.
In this paper, we discuss quasidense multifunctions from a Banach space into its dual, and use the two sum theorems proved in a previous paper to give various characterizations of quasidensity. We investigate the Fitzpatrick extension of such a multifunction. We prove that, for closed monotone multifunctions, quasidensity implies type (FPV) and strong maximality, and that quasidensity is equivalent to type (FP). This version differs from Version 3 in that a few minor errors have been corrected.
We show that if a Banach space X has the weak fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings and Y has the generalized Gossez-Lami Dozo property or is uniformly convex in every direction, then the direct sum of X and Y with a strictly monotone norm has the weak fixed point property. The result is new even if Y is finite-dimensional.
