A version of the Bessaga inverse of the Banach contraction principle for partial metric spaces is presented. Equivalence of that version and the continuum hypothesis is shown as well.
It is well known that fixed point problems of contractive-type mappings defined on cone metric spaces over Banach algebras are not equivalent to those in usual metric spaces (see [3] and [10]). In this framework, the novelty of the present paper represents the development of some fixed point results regarding sequences of contractions in the setting of cone metric spaces over Banach algebras. Furthermore, some examples are given in order to strengthen our new concepts. Also, based on the powerful notion of a cone metric space over a Banach algebra, we present important applications to systems …
Our aim in this paper is to present a new type of the modular space. This space contains the classical modular space. There are some mappings that do not have contractive condition in the usual modular space but become contraction in this new space.
In this paper we introduce the notion of a Caristi-Banach type $\mathcal{Z}_{R}^{b}$- contraction in the framework of $b$- metric space endowed with a transitive relation that combine the ideas of Caristi type contraction and Banach contraction with a help of simulation function. We present an example to clarify the statement of the given result.
In this paper, we present the generalization of B-contraction and C-contraction due to Sehgal and Hicks respectively. We also study some properties of C-contraction in probabilistic metric space.
In this paper, we investigate the existence and uniqueness of fixed point for partially ordered contraction type operators in Banach Space. We also present applications to integral and differential equations.
We present versions of ergodic theorems for $L_1$--$L_\infty$ contractions in Banach--Kantorovich $L_p$-lattices associated with the Maharam measure taking values in the algebra of measurable functions.
We introduce the concept of weak L-P property for a pair of Banach spaces, in the study of extreme contractions. We give examples of pairs of Banach spaces (not) satisfying weak L-P property and apply the concept to compute the exact number of extreme contractions between a particular pair of polygonal Banach spaces. We also study the optimality of our results on the newly introduced weak L-P property for a pair of Banach spaces, by considering appropriate examples.
Let $X$ be a reflexive Banach space such that for any $x \ne 0$ the set $$ \{x^* \in X^*: \text {$\|x^*\|=1$ and $x^*(x)=\|x\|$}\} $$ is compact. We prove that any unrestricted product of of a finite number of $(W)$ contractions on $X$ converges weakly.
Using the technique of enrichment of contractive type mappings by Krasnoselskij averaging, introduced in [Berinde, V., {\it Approximating fixed points of enriched nonexpansive mappings by Krasnoselskij iteration in Hilbert spaces}, Carpathian J. Math. {\bf 35} (2019), no. 3, 277-288.], we introduce the class of enriched Chatterjea contractions and prove general fixed point theorems for such contractions in the setting of a Banach space. Examples to illustrate the richness of the new class of contractions and the relationship between enriched Banach contractions, enriched Kannan contractions an…
In the present paper we study majorizable operators acting on Banach-Kantorovich $L_p$-lattices, constructed by a measure $m$ with values in the ring of all measurable functions. Then using methods of measurable bundles of Banach-Kantorovich lattices, we prove the strong "zero-two" law for positive contractions of the Banach-Kantorovich $L_p$-lattices.
In the present paper we prove the "zero-two" law for positive contractions of lattices $L^p(\nabla,μ)$ of Banach-Kantorovich, constructed by the measure $μ$ with values in the ring of all measurable functions.
We introduce a large class of mappings, called enriched contractions, which includes, amongst many other contractive type mappings, the Picard-Banach contractions and some nonexpansive mappings. We show that any enriched contraction has a unique fixed point and that this fixed point can be approximated by means of an appropriate Kransnoselskij iterative scheme. Several important results in fixed point theory are shown to be corollaries or consequences of the main results in this paper. We also study the fixed points of local enriched contractions, asymptotic enriched contractions and Maia type…
We introduce a large class of contractive mappings, called Suzuki Berinde type contraction. We show that any Suzuki Berinde type contraction has a fixed point and characterizes the completeness of the underlying normed space. A fixed point theorem for multivalued mapping is also obtained. These results unify, generalize and complement various known comparable results in the literature.
In this paper, by using admissible sets, we give some fixed point results for orbitally contractions which diminish the radius of invariant convex subsets and orbits. Furthermore, a characterization of the weak normal structure by the fixed point property associated with this class of mappings is established.

In this paper, we introduce two new types of enriched contractions, viz., enriched $\mathcal{A}$-contraction and enriched $\mathcal{A}'$-contraction. Then we obtain fixed points of mappings satisfying such contractions using the fixed point property of the average operator of the mappings. Further, we study the well-posedness and limit shadowing property of the fixed point problem involving the contractions, and give some examples to validate the results proved. We frame an open question related to the existence of a fixed point of such contractions. We also show that Berinde and Păcurar's rec…
Let $X$ be a complex Banach space and let $J:X \to X^*$ be a duality section on $X$ (i.e. $\langle x,J(x)\rangle=\|J(x)\|\|x\|=\|J(x)\|^2=\|x\|^2$). For any unit vector $x$ and any ($C_0$) contraction semigroup $T=\{e^{tA}:t \geq 0\}$, Goldstein proved that if $X$ is a Hilbert space and if $|\langle T(t) x,J(x)\rangle| \to 1 $ as $t \to \infty$, then $x$ is an eigenvector of $A$ corresponding to a purely imaginary eigenvalue. In this article, we prove the similar result holds if $X$ is a strictly convex complex Banach space.
Geodesic contraction in vector-valued differential equations is readily verified by linearized operators which are uniformly negative-definite in the Riemannian metric. In the infinite-dimensional setting, however, such analysis is generally restricted to norm-contracting systems. We develop a generalization of geodesic contraction rates to Banach spaces using a smoothly-weighted semi-inner product structure on tangent spaces. We show that negative contraction rates in bijectively weighted spaces imply asymptotic norm-contraction, and apply recent results on asymptotic contractions in Banach s…
Contraction rates of time-varying maps induced by dynamical systems illuminate a wide range of asymptotic properties with applications in stability analysis and control theory. In finite-dimensional smoothly varying inner-product spaces such as $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\mathbb{C}^n$ with Riemannian metrics, contraction rates can be estimated by upper-bounding the real numerical range of the vector field's Jacobian. However, vector spaces with norms other than $L^2$ commonly arise in the stability analysis of infinite-dimensional systems such as those arising from partial differential equations and …
We augment the dimension of the Euclidean space by one and the Picard iteration of a contraction by a simple iteration on the real line such that the resulting iteration becomes monotone increasing and bounded with respect to the order defined by the Lorentz cone of the augmented space. This provides a different way of showing the convergence of the Picard iteration of a contraction, exhibiting the strong relationship between the Banach fixed point principle and the ordering structure of the Euclidean space ordered by the Lorentz cone.
In this paper we completely characterize the norm attainment set of a bounded linear operator on a Hilbert space. This partially answers a question raised recently in [\textit{D. Sain, On the norm attainment set of a bounded linear operator, accepted in Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications}]. We further study the extreme contractions on various types of finite-dimensional Banach spaces, namely Euclidean spaces, and strictly convex spaces. In particular, we give an elementary alternative proof of the well-known characterization of extreme contractions on a Hilbert space, that works…
For any complex Banach space $X$, let $J$ denote the duality mapping of $X$. For any unit vector $x$ in $X$ and any ($C_0$) contraction semigroup $(T_t)_{t>0}$ on $X$, Baillon and Guerre-Delabriere proved that if $X$ is a smooth reflexive Banach space and if there is $x^* \in J(x)$ such that $|\langle T(t) \, x,J(x)\rangle| \to 1 $ as $t \to \infty$, then there is a unit vector $y\in X$ which is an eigenvector of the generator $A$ of $(T_t)_{t>0}$ associated with a purely imaginary eigenvalue. They asked whether this result is still true if $X$ is replaced by $c_o$. In this article, we show th…
There are several extensions of the classical Banach Fixed Point Theorem in technical literature. A branch of generalizations replaces usual contractivity by weaker but still effective assumptions. Our note follows this stream, presenting an elementary proof for a known fixed point result. Some applications are also considered.
We consider the space of non-expansive mappings on a bounded, closed and convex subset of a Banach space equipped with the metric of uni- form convergence. We show that the set of strict contractions is a σ-porous subset.
We establish the following converse of the well-known inverse function theorem. Let $g:U\to V$ and $f:V\to U$ be inverse homeomorphisms between open subsets of Banach spaces. If $g$ is differentiable of class $C^p$ and $f$ if locally Lipschitz, then the Fréchet derivative of $g$ at each point of $U$ is invertible and $f$ must be differentiable of class $C^p$.
A branch of generalizations of the Banach Fixed Point Theorem replaces contractivity by a weaker but still effective property. The aim of the present note is to extend the contraction principle in this spirit for such complete semimetric spaces that fulfill an extra regularity property. The stability of fixed points is also investigated in this setting. As applications, fixed point results are presented for several important generalizations of metric spaces.
In this paper we collect results concerning the {operator-norm} convergent {Trotter} product formula for two semigroups $\{\e^{- t A}\}_{t\geq 0}$, $\{\e^{- t B}\}_{t\geq 0}$, with densely defined generators $A$ and $B$ in a {Banach} space. Although the {strong} convergence in Banach space for contraction semigroups is known since the seminal paper by Trotter (1959), which after more than three decades was extended to convergence in the {operator-norm} topology in {Hilbert} spaces by Rogava (1993), the {operator-norm} convergence in a {Banach} space was established only in (2001).
We prove that, in a large class of Banach lattices, the fixed space of each commuting family of positive linear contractions is a lattice subspace. As consequences, new cyclicity results for the peripheral point spectra of positive operators and semigroups are derived; we also pose an open problem that naturally occurs in this context. Finally, a variety of counterexamples is presented to point out some limits of our results.
In this paper, we show that several extension of Banach contraction principle, can be easily derived from the Caristi's theorem is one of the useful generalization of Banach contraction principle in the setting of the complete metric spaces. Moreover, some partial answers to some known open problems are given via Caristi's corollaries. Finally, existence of bounded solutions of a functional equation is studied to support our results.
The quotient shape types of normed vectorial spaces(over the same field) with respect to Banach spaces reduce to those of Banach spaces. The finite quotient shape type of normed spaces is an invariant of the (algebraic) dimension, but not conversely. The converse holds for separable normed spaces as well as for the bidual-like spaces (isomorphic to their second dual spaces). As a consequence, the Hilbert space $l_2$, or even its (countably dimensional, unitary) direct sum subspace may represent the unique quotient shape type of all $2^\aleph_0$-dimensional normed spaces. An application yields …
In this article, we show that every centered Gaussian measure on an infinite dimensional separable Fréchet space $X$ over $\mathbb R$ admits some full measure Banach intermediate space between $X$ and its Cameron-Martin space. We provide a way of generating such spaces and, by showing a partial converse, give a characterization of Banach intermediate spaces. Finally, we show an example of constructing an $α$-Hölder intermediate space in the space of continuous functions, $\mathcal C_0[0, 1]$ with the classical Wiener measure.
The motive behind this manuscript is to set up the existence and uniqueness of a positive solution for a fractional thermostat model for certain values of the parameter $λ>0$. We accomplish sufficient conditions for the existence of a positive solution to the model, and afterwards formulate a non-trivial example to authenticate the grounds of our obtained results. Our findings are based on certain fixed point results of contractions depending on couple of altering distance functions $ϕ$ and $ψ$ in the setting of Banach spaces that are discussed in this sequel.
This paper shows the usefulness of Perov's contraction principle, which generalizes Banach's contraction principle to a vector-valued metric, for studying dynamic programming problems in which the discount factor can be stochastic. The discounting condition $β<1$ is replaced by $ρ(B)<1$, where $B$ is an appropriate nonnegative matrix and $ρ$ denotes the spectral radius. Blackwell's sufficient condition is also generalized in this setting. Applications to asset pricing and optimal savings are discussed.
We show that there exists a strong uniform embedding from any proper metric space into any Banach space without cotype. Then we prove a result concerning the Lipschitz embedding of locally finite subsets of $\mathcal{L}_{p}$-spaces. We use this locally finite result to construct a coarse bi-Lipschitz embedding for proper subsets of any $\mathcal{L}_p$-space into any Banach space $X$ containing the $\ell_p^n$'s. Finally using an argument of G. Schechtman we prove that for general proper metric spaces and for Banach spaces without cotype a converse statement holds.
We show that if the Szlenk index of a Banach space $X$ is larger than the first infinite ordinal $ω$ or if the Szlenk index of its dual is larger than $ω$, then the tree of all finite sequences of integers equipped with the hyperbolic distance metrically embeds into $X$. We show that the converse is true when $X$ is assumed to be reflexive. As an application, we exhibit new classes of Banach spaces that are stable under coarse-Lipschitz embeddings and therefore under uniform homeomorphisms.
In this paper we study conditions on a Banach space X that ensure that the Banach algebra K(X) of compact operators is amenable. We give a symmetrized approximation property of X which is proved to be such a condition. This property is satisfied by a wide range of Banach spaces including all the classical spaces. We then investigate which constructions of new Banach spaces from old ones preserve the property of carrying amenable algebras of compact operators. Roughly speaking, dual spaces, predual spaces and certain tensor products do inherit this property and direct sums do not. For direct su…
We use a method involving elementary submodels and a partial converse of Foran lemma to prove separable reduction theorems concerning Suslin sigma-P-porous sets where "P" can be from a rather wide class of porosity-like relations in complete metric spaces. In particular, we separably reduce the notion of Suslin cone small set in Asplund spaces. As an application we prove a theorem stating that a continuous approximately convex function on an Asplund space is Frechet differentiable up to a cone small set.
Let $(x_n)$ be a sequence in a Banach space $X$ which does not converge in norm, and let $E$ be an isomorphically precisely norming set for $X$ such that \[ \sum_n |x^*(x_{n+1}-x_n)|< \infty, \; \forall x^* \in E. \qquad (*) \] Then there exists a subsequence of $(x_n)$ which spans an isomorphically polyhedral Banach space. It follows immediately from results of V. Fonf that the converse is also true: If a separable Banach space $Y$ is a separable isomorphically polyhedral then there exists a non norm convergent sequence $(x_n)$ which spans $Y$ and there exists an isomorphically precisely norm…
Existence and uniqueness as well as the iterative approximation of fixed points of enriched almost contractions in Banach spaces are studied. The obtained results are generalizations of the great majority of metric fixed point theorems, in the setting of a Banach space. The main tool used in the investigations is to work with the averaged operator $T_λ$ instead of the original operator $T$. The effectiveness of the new results thus derived is illustrated by appropriate examples. An application of the strong convergence theorems to solving a variational inequality is also presented.
In this paper we study the existence and uniqueness of best proximity points of cyclic contractions as well as the convergence of iterates to such proximity points. We do it from two different approaches, leading each one of them to different results which complete, if not improve, other similar results in the theory. Results in this paper stand for Banach spaces, geodesic metric spaces and metric spaces. We also include an appendix on CAT(0) spaces where we study the particular behavior of these spaces regarding the problems we are concerned with.
It is well known that in the calculus of variations and in optimization there exist many formulations of the fundamental propositions on the attainment of the infima of sequentially weakly lower semicontinuous coercive functions on reflexive Banach spaces. By either some constructive skills or the regularization skill by inf--convolutions we show in this paper that all these formulations together with their important variants are equivalent to each other and equivalent to the reflexivity of the underlying space. Motivated by this research, we also give a characterization for a normed space to …
In this paper, we report on new results related to the existence of an adjoint for operators on separable Banach spaces and discuss a few interesting applications. (Some results are new even for Hilbert spaces.) Our first two applications provide an extension of the Poincaré inequality and the Stone-von Neumann version of the spectral theorem for a large class of $C_0$-generators of contraction semigroups on separable Banach spaces. Our third application provides a natural extension of the Schatten-class of operators to all separable Banach spaces. As a part of this program, we introduce a new…
