Contraction rates of time-varying maps induced by dynamical systems illuminate a wide range of asymptotic properties with applications in stability analysis and control theory. In finite-dimensional smoothly varying inner-product spaces such as $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\mathbb{C}^n$ with Riemannian metrics, contraction rates can be estimated by upper-bounding the real numerical range of the vector field's Jacobian. However, vector spaces with norms other than $L^2$ commonly arise in the stability analysis of infinite-dimensional systems such as those arising from partial differential equations and continuum mechanics. To this end, we present a unified approach to contraction analysis in Banach spaces using the theory of weighted semi-inner products. We generalize contraction in a geodesic distance to asymptotic stability of perturbations in smoothly varying semi-inner products, and show that the latter is a dynamical invariant similar to the coordinate-invariance of Lyapunov exponents. We show that contraction in particular weighted spaces verifies asymptotic convergence to subspaces and submanifolds, present applications to limit-cycle analysis and phase-locking phenomena, and pose general conditions for inheritance of contraction properties within coupled systems. We discuss contraction rates in Sobolev spaces for retention of regularity in partial differential equations, and suggest a type of weak solution defined by a vanishing contractive term. Lastly, we present an application to machine learning, using weighted semi-inner products to derive stability conditions for functional gradient descent in a Banach space.
Geodesic contraction in vector-valued differential equations is readily verified by linearized operators which are uniformly negative-definite in the Riemannian metric. In the infinite-dimensional setting, however, such analysis is generally restricted to norm-contracting systems. We develop a generalization of geodesic contraction rates to Banach spaces using a smoothly-weighted semi-inner product structure on tangent spaces. We show that negative contraction rates in bijectively weighted spaces imply asymptotic norm-contraction, and apply recent results on asymptotic contractions in Banach s…
The representation theorems of Gelfand and Kakutani for commutative C*-algebras and AM- and AL-spaces are the basis for the Koopman linearization of topological and measure-preserving dynamical systems. In this article we prove versions of these results for dynamics on topological and measurable Banach bundles and the corresponding weighted Koopman representations on Banach modules.
For a topological group G, we show that a compact metric G-space is tame if and only if it can be linearly represented on a separable Banach space which does not contain an isomorphic copy of $l_1$ (we call such Banach spaces, Rosenthal spaces). With this goal in mind we study tame dynamical systems and their representations on Banach spaces.
We present criteria for statistical stability of attracting sets for vector fields using dynamical conditions on the corresponding generated flows. These conditions are easily verified for all singular-hyperbolic attracting sets of $C^2$ vector fields using known results, providing robust examples of statistically stable singular attracting sets (encompassing in particular the Lorenz and geometrical Lorenz attractors). These conditions are shown to hold also on the persistent but non-robust family of contracting Lorenz flows (also known as Rovella attractors), providing examples of statistical…
We prove the existence of measurable invariant manifolds for small perturbations of linear Random Dynamical Systems evolving on a Banach space and admitting a general type of dichotomy, both for continuous and discrete time. Moreover, the asymptotic behavior in the invariant manifold is similar to the one of the linear Random Dynamical System.
Let $(X,T)$ be a topological dynamical system. A pair of points $(x,y)\in X^2$ is called Banach proximal if for any $ε>0$, the set $\{n\in\mathbb{Z}:\ d(T^nx,T^ny)<ε\}$ has Banach density one. We study the structure of the Banach proximal relation. An useful tool is the notion of the support of a topological dynamical system. We show that a dynamical system is strongly proximal if and only if every pair in $X^2$ is Banach proximal. A subset $S$ of $X$ is Banach scrambled if every two distinct points in $S$ form a Banach proximal pair but not asymptotic. We construct a dynamical system with the…
We introduce a version of Voiculescu-Brown approximation entropy for isometric automorphisms of Banach spaces and develop within this framework the connection between dynamics and the local theory of Banach spaces discovered by Glasner and Weiss. Our fundamental result concerning this contractive approximation entropy, or CA entropy, characterizes the occurrence of positive values both geometrically and topologically. This leads to various applications; for example, we obtain a geometric description of the topological Pinsker factor and show that a C*-algebra is type I if and only if every mul…
We prove that, under certain conditions, uniform weak mixing (to zero) of the bounded sequences in Banach space implies uniform weak mixing of its tensor product. Moreover, we prove that ergodicity of tensor product of the sequences in Banach space implies its weak mixing. Applications of the obtained results, we prove that tensor product of uniquely $E$-weak mixing $C^*$-dynamical systems is also uniquely $E$-weak mixing as well.
To every Banach space V we associate a compact right topological affine semigroup E(V). We show that a separable Banach space V is Asplund if and only if E(V) is metrizable, and it is Rosenthal (i.e. it does not contain an isomorphic copy of $l_1$) if and only if E(V) is a Rosenthal compactum. We study representations of compact right topological semigroups in E(V). In particular, representations of tame and HNS-semigroups arise naturally as enveloping semigroups of tame and HNS (hereditarily non-sensitive) dynamical systems, respectively. As an application we obtain a generalization of a theo…
We show that singular stochastic delay differential equations (SDDEs) induce cocycle maps on a field of Banach spaces. A general Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem on fields of Banach spaces is proved and applied to linear SDDEs. In Part II of this article, we use our results to prove a stable manifold theorem for non-linear singular SDDEs.
For linear random dynamical systems in a separable Banach space $X$, we derived a series of Krein-Rutman type Theorems with respect to co-invariant cone family with rank-$k$, which present a (quasi)-equivalence relation between the measurably co-invariant cone family and the measurably dominated splitting of $X$. Moreover, such (quasi)-equivalence relation turns out to be an equivalence relation whenever (i) $k=1$; or (ii) in the frame of the Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem with certain Lyapunov exponent being greater than the negative infinity. For the second case, we thoroughly investigated t…
We study the asymptotic dynamics of maps which are piecewise contracting on a compact space. These maps are Lipschitz continuous, with Lipschitz constant smaller than one, when restricted to any piece of a finite and dense union of disjoint open pieces. We focus on the topological and the dynamical properties of the (global) attractor of the orbits that remain in this union. As a starting point, we show that the attractor consists of a finite set of periodic points when it does not intersect the boundary of a contraction piece, which complements similar results proved for more specific classes…
A Smale space is a chaotic dynamical system with canonical coordinates of contracting and expanding directions. The basic sets for Smale's Axiom A systems are a key class of examples. We consider the special case of irreducible Smale spaces with zero dimensional contracting directions, and characterize these as stationary inverse limits satisfying certain conditions.
Let $F(u)=h$ be a solvable operator equation in a Banach space $X$ with a Gateaux differentiable norm. Under minimal smoothness assumptions on $F$, sufficient conditions are given for the validity of the Dynamical Systems Method (DSM) for solving the above operator equation. It is proved that the DSM (Dynamical Systems Method) \bee \dot{u}(t)=-A^{-1}_{a(t)}(u(t))[F(u(t))+a(t)u(t)-f],\quad u(0)=u_0,\ %\dot{u}=\frac{d u}{dt}, \eee converges to $y$ as $t\to +\infty$, for $a(t)$ properly chosen. Here $F(y)=f$, and $\dot{u}$ denotes the time derivative.
A semigroup (dynamical system) generated by $C^{1+α}$-contracting mappings is considered. We call a such semigroup regular if the maximum $K$ of the conformal dilatations of generators, the maximum $l$ of the norms of the derivatives of generators and the smoothness $α$ of the generators satisfy a compatibility condition $K< 1/l^α$. We prove the {\em geometric distortion lemma} for a regular semigroup generated by $C^{1+α}$-contracting mappings.
A well-known result in the area of dynamical systems asserts that any invertible hyperbolic operator on any Banach space is structurally stable. This result was originally obtained by P. Hartman in 1960 for operators on finite-dimensional spaces. The general case was independently obtained by J. Palis and C. Pugh around 1968. We will exhibit examples of structurally stable operators that are not hyperbolic, thereby showing that the converse of the above-mentioned result is false in general. We will also prove that an invertible operator on a Banach space is hyperbolic if and only if it is expa…
In this paper, we study the existence of SRB measures for infinite dimensional dynamical systems in a Banach space. We show that if the system has a partially hyperbolic attractor with nontrivial finite dimensional unstable directions, then it has an SRB measure.
We study different pointwise recurrence notions for linear dynamical systems from the Ergodic Theory point of view. We show that from any reiteratively recurrent vector $x_0$, for an adjoint operator $T$ on a separable dual Banach space $X$, one can construct a $T$-invariant probability measure which contains $x_0$ in its support. This allows us to establish some equivalences, for these operators, between some strong pointwise recurrence notions which in general are completely distinguished. In particular, we show that (in our framework) reiterative recurrence coincides with frequent recurrenc…
The paper examines questions of local asymptotic stability of random dynamical systems. Results concerning stochastic dynamics in general metric spaces, as well as in Banach spaces, are obtained. The results pertaining to Banach spaces are based on the linearization of the systems under study. The general theory is motivated (and illustrated in this paper) by applications in mathematical finance.
This is the first of a series of papers concerned with principal Lyapunov exponents and principal Floquet subspaces of positive random dynamical systems in ordered Banach spaces. It focuses on the development of general theory. First, the notions of generalized principal Floquet subspaces, generalized principal Lyapunov exponents, and generalized exponential separations for general positive random dynamical systems in ordered Banach spaces are introduced, which extend the classical notions of principal Floquet subspaces, principal Lyapunov exponents, and exponential separations for strongly po…
The $k$ multiplicative and $k$ additive compounds of a matrix play an important role in geometry, multi-linear algebra, the asymptotic analysis of nonlinear dynamical systems, and in bounding the Hausdorff dimension of fractal sets. These compounds are defined for integer values of $k$. Here, we introduce generalizations called the $α$ multiplicative and $α$ additive compounds of a square matrix, with $α$ real. We study the properties of these new compounds and demonstrate an application in the context of the Douady and Oesterlé Theorem. This leads to a generalization of contracting systems to…
Let $F(u)=h$ be an operator equation in a Banach space $X$, $\|F'(u)-F'(v)\|\leq ω(\|u-v\|)$, where $ω\in C([0,\infty))$, $ω(0)=0$, $ω(r)>0$ if $r>0$, $ω(r)$ is strictly growing on $[0,\infty)$. Denote $A(u):=F'(u)$, where $F'(u)$ is the Fréchet derivative of $F$, and $A_a:=A+aI.$ Assume that (*) $\|A^{-1}_a(u)\|\leq \frac{c_1}{|a|^b}$, $|a|>0$, $b>0$, $a\in L$. Here $a$ may be a complex number, and $L$ is a smooth path on the complex $a$-plane, joining the origin and some point on the complex $a-$plane, $0<|a|<ε_0$, where $ε_0>0$ is a small fixed number, such that for any $a\in L$ estimate (*…

We consider group-valued cocycles over dynamical systems. The base system is a homeomorphism $f$ of a metric space satisfying a closing property, for example a hyperbolic dynamical system or a subshift of finite type. The cocycle $A$ takes values in the group of invertible bounded linear operators on a Banach space and is Hölder continuous. We prove that upper and lower Lyapunov exponents of $A$ with respect to an ergodic invariant measure $μ$ can be approximated in terms of the norms of the values of $A$ on periodic orbits of $f$. We also show that these exponents cannot always be approximate…
The use of anisotropic Banach spaces has provided a wealth of new results in the study of hyperbolic dynamical systems in recent years, yet their application to specific systems is often technical and difficult to access. The purpose of this note is to provide an introduction to the use of these spaces in the study of hyperbolic maps and to highlight the important elements and how they work together. This is done via a concrete example of a family of dissipative Baker's transformations. Along the way, we prove an original result connecting such transformations with expanding maps via a continu…
We prove that dynamical degrees of rational self-maps on projective varieties can be interpreted as spectral radii of naturally defined operators on suitable Banach spaces. Generalizing Shokurov's notion of b-divisors, we consider the space of b-classes of higher codimension cycles, and endow this space with various Banach norms. Building on these constructions, we design a natural extension to higher dimensions of the Picard-Manin space introduced by Cantat and Boucksom-Favre-Jonsson in the case of surfaces. We prove a version of the Hodge index theorem, and a surprising compactness result in…
We consider $C^2$ Fréchet differentiable mappings of Banach spaces leaving invariant compactly supported Borel probability measures, and study the relation between entropy and volume growth for a natural notion of volume defined on finite dimensional subspaces. SRB measures are characterized as exactly those measures for which entropy is equal to volume growth on unstable manifolds, equivalently the sum of positive Lyapunov exponents of the map. In addition to numerous difficulties incurred by our infinite-dimensional setting, a crucial aspect to the proof is the technical point that the volum…
Any infinite sequence of substitutions with the same matrix of the Pisot type defines a symbolic dynamical system which is minimal. We prove that, to any such sequence, we can associate a compact set (Rauzy fractal) by projection of the stepped line associated with an element of the symbolic system on the contracting space of the matrix. We show that this Rauzy fractal depends continuously on the sequence of substitutions, and investigate some of its properties; in some cases, this construction gives a geometric model for the symbolic dynamical system.
A partially hyperbolic dynamical system is said to have the quasi-shadowing property if every pseudotrajectory can be shadowed by a sequence of points $(x_n)_{n\in \Z}$ such that $x_{n+1}$ is obtained from the image of $x_n$ by moving it by a small factor in the central direction. In the present paper, we prove that a small nonlinear perturbation of a partially dichotomic sequence of (not necessarily invertible) linear operators acting on an arbitrary Banach space has the quasi-shadowing property. We also get obtain a continuous time version of this result. As an application of our main result…
We study asymptotically compact nonautonomous dynamical systems given by abstract cocycles in Banach spaces. Our main assumptions are given by a squeezing property in a quadratic cone field (given by a family of indefinite quadratic Lyapunov-like functionals) and asymptotic compactness. Under such conditions it is possible to reconstruct foliations as in the theory of normally hyperbolic manifolds. Our approach allows to unify many "practical" theories of local and nonlocal invariant manifolds, such as stable/unstable/center manifolds and inertial manifolds, and, moreover, it often leads to op…
For an arbitrary topological group G any compact G-dynamical system (G,X) can be linearly G-represented as a weak*-compact subset of a dual Banach space V*. As was shown by Megrelishvili (2003), the Banach space V can be chosen to be reflexive iff the metric system (G,X) is weakly almost periodic (WAP). In this paper we study the wider class of compact G-systems which can be linearly represented as a weak*-compact subset of a dual Banach space with the Radon-Nikodym property. We call such a system a Radon-Nikodym system (RN). One of our main results is to show that for metrizable compact G-sys…
In this note, it is shown that several results concerning mean equicontinuity proved before for minimal systems are actually held for general topological dynamical systems. Particularly, it turns out that a dynamical system is mean equicontinuous if and only if it is equicontinuous in the mean if and only if it is Banach (or Weyl) mean equicontinuous if and only if its regionally proximal relation is equal to the Banach proximal relation. Meanwhile, a relation is introduced such that the smallest closed invariant equivalence relation containing this relation induces the maximal mean equicontin…
We investigate the relation between the distributions appearing in the study of ergodic averages of parabolic flows (e.g. in the work of Flaminio-Forni) and the ones appearing in the study of the statistical properties of hyperbolic dynamical systems (i.e. the eigendistributions of the transfer operator). In order to avoid, as much as possible, technical issues that would cloud the basic idea, we limit ourselves to a simple flow on the torus. Our main result is that, roughly, the growth of ergodic averages of a parabolic flows is controlled by the eigenvalues of a suitable transfer operator as…
We give formulas for the spectral radius of weighted endomorphisms $aα: C(X,D)\to C(X,D)$, $a\in C(X,D)$, where $X$ is a compact Hausdorff space and $D$ is a unital Banach algebra. Under the assumption that $α$ generates a partial dynamical system $(X,φ)$, we establish two kinds of variational principles for $r(aα)$: using linear extensions of $(X,φ)$ and using Lyapunov exponents associated with ergodic measures for $(X,φ)$. This requires considering (twisted) cocycles over $(X,φ)$ with values in an arbitrary Banach algebra $D$, and thus our analysis can not be reduced to any of mutliplicative…
Motivated by Rosenthal's famous $l^1$-dichotomy in Banach spaces, Haydon's theorem, and additionally by recent works on tame dynamical systems, we introduce the class of tame locally convex spaces. This is a natural locally convex analogue of Rosenthal Banach spaces (for which any bounded sequence contains a weak Cauchy subsequence). Our approach is based on a bornology of tame subsets which in turn is closely related to eventual fragmentability. This leads, among others, to the following results: $\bullet$ extending Haydon's characterization of Rosenthal Banach spaces, by showing that a lcs $…
This is the second part in a series of papers concerned with principal Lyapunov exponents and principal Floquet subspaces of positive random dynamical systems in ordered Banach spaces. The current part focuses on applications of general theory, developed in the authors' paper "Principal Lyapunov exponents and principal Floquet spaces of positive random dynamical systems. I. General theory," Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., in press, to positive random dynamical systems on finite-dimensional ordered Banach spaces. It is shown under some quite general assumptions that measurable linear skew-product semi…
One of the fundamental results of ergodic optimisation asserts that for any dynamical system on a compact metric space $X$ and for any Banach space of continuous real-valued functions on $X$ which embeds densely in $C(X)$ there exists a residual set of functions in that Banach space for which the maximising measure is unique. We extend this result by showing that this residual set is additionally prevalent, answering a question of J. Bochi and Y. Zhang.
For strongly monotone dynamical systems on a Banach space, we show that the largest Lyapunov exponent $λ_{\max}>0$ holds on a shy set in the measure-theoretic sense. This exhibits that strongly monotone dynamical systems admit no observable chaos, the notion of which was formulated by L.S. Young. We further show that such phenomenon of no observable chaos is robust under the $C^1$-perturbation of the systems.
This is the third part in a series of papers concerned with principal Lyapunov exponents and principal Floquet subspaces of positive random dynamical systems in ordered Banach spaces. The current part focuses on applications of general theory, developed in the authors' paper "Principal Lyapunov exponents and principal Floquet spaces of positive random dynamical systems. I. General theory," Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 365 (2013), pp. 5329-5365, to positive continuous-time random dynamical systems on infinite dimensional ordered Banach spaces arising from random parabolic equations and random delay …
For a general discrete dynamics on a Banach and Hilbert spaces we give a necessary and sufficient conditions of the existence of bounded solutions under assumption that the homogeneous difference equation admits an exponential dichotomy on the semi-axes. We consider the so called resonance (critical) case when the uniqueness of solution is disturbed. We show that admissibility can be reformulated in the terms of generalised or pseudoinvertibility. As an application we consider the case when the corresponding dynamical system is e-trichotomy.
