The $k$ multiplicative and $k$ additive compounds of a matrix play an important role in geometry, multi-linear algebra, the asymptotic analysis of nonlinear dynamical systems, and in bounding the Hausdorff dimension of fractal sets. These compounds are defined for integer values of $k$. Here, we introduce generalizations called the $α$ multiplicative and $α$ additive compounds of a square matrix, with $α$ real. We study the properties of these new compounds and demonstrate an application in the context of the Douady and Oesterlé Theorem. This leads to a generalization of contracting systems to $α$ contracting systems, with $α$ real. Roughly speaking, the dynamics of such systems contracts any set with Hausdorff dimension larger than $α$. For $α=1$ they reduce to standard contracting systems.
In an earlier work, joint with R. Kenyon, we computed the Hausdorff dimension of the "multiplicative golden mean shift" defined as the set of all reals in [0,1] whose binary expansion (x_k) satisfies x_k x_{2k}=0 for all k=1,2... Here we show that this set has infinite Hausdorff measure in its dimension. A more precise result in terms of gauges in which the Hausdorff measure is infinite is also obtained.
We consider subsets of the (symbolic) sequence space that are invariant under the action of the semigroup of multiplicative integers. A representative example is the collection of all 0-1 sequences $(x_k)$ such that $x_k x_{2k}=0$ for all $k$. We compute the Hausdorff and Minkowski dimensions of these sets and show that they are typically different. The proof proceeds via a variational principle for multiplicative subshifts.
We compute the Hausdorff dimension of the "multiplicative golden mean shift" defined as the set of all reals in $[0,1]$ whose binary expansion $(x_k)$ satisfies $x_k x_{2k}=0$ for all $k\ge 1$, and show that it is smaller than the Minkowski dimension.
Let $I=[0,1)$, $-1<λ<1$ and $f\colon I\to I$ be a piecewise $λ$-affine map of the interval $I$, i.e., there exist a partition $0=a_0<a_1<\cdots< a_{k-1}<a_k=1$ of the interval $I$ into $k\geq2$ subintervals and $b_1,\ldots, b_k\in\mathbb{R}$ such that $f(x)=λx+ b_i$ for every $x\in[a_{i-1},a_{i})$ and $i=1,\ldots,k$. The exceptional set $\mathcal{E}_f$ of $f$ is the set of parameters $δ\in\mathbb{R}$ such that $R_δ\circ f$ is not asymptotically periodic, where $R_δ\colon I\to I$ is the rotation of angle $δ$. In this paper we prove that $\mathcal{E}_f$ has zero Hausdorff dimension. We derive th…
We study bifurcations of invariant graphs in skew product dynamical systems driven by hyperbolic surface maps T like Anosov surface diffeomorphisms or baker maps and with one-dimensional concave fibre maps under multiplicative forcing when the forcing is scaled by a parameter r=e^{-t}. For a range of parameters two invariant graphs (a trivial and a non-trivial one) coexist, and we use thermodynamic formalism to characterize the parameter dependence of the Hausdorff and packing dimension of the set of points where both graphs coincide. As a corollary we characterize the parameter dependence of …

We present a new method to calculate the Hausdorff dimension of a certain class of fractals: boundaries of self-affine tiles. Among the interesting aspects are that even if the affine contraction underlying the iterated function system is not conjugated to a similarity we obtain an upper- and lower-bounds for its Hausdorff dimension. In fact, we obtain the exact value for the dimension if the moduli of the eigenvalues of the underlying affine contraction are all equal (this includes Jordan blocks). The tiles we discuss play an important role in the theory of wavelets. We calculate the dimensio…
We consider the action of Mandelbrot multiplicative cascades on probability measures supported on a symbolic space. For general probability measures, we obtain almost a sharp criterion of non-degeneracy of the limiting measure; it relies on the lower and upper Hausdorff dimensions of the measure and the entropy of the random weights. We also obtain sharp bounds for the lower Hausdorff and upper packing dimensions of the limiting measure. When the original measure is a Gibbs measure associated with a potential of certain modulus of continuity (weaker than Hölder), all our results are sharp. Thi…
Motivated by a question of Erdős, this paper considers questions concerning the discrete dynamical system on the 3-adic integers given by multiplication by 2. Let the 3-adic Cantor set consist of all 3-adic integers whose expansions use only the digits 0 and 1. The exception set is the set of 3-adic integers whose forward orbits under this action intersects the 3-adic Cantor set infinitely many times. It has been shown that this set has Hausdorff dimension 0. Approaches to upper bounds on the Hausdorff dimensions of these sets leads to study of intersections of multiplicative translates of Can…
Let $m_1 \geq m_2 \geq 2$ be integers. We consider subsets of the product symbolic sequence space $(\{0,\cdots,m_1-1\} \times \{0,\cdots,m_2-1\})^{\mathbb{N}^*}$ that are invariant under the action of the semigroup of multiplicative integers. These sets are defined following Kenyon, Peres and Solomyak and using a fixed integer $q \geq 2$. We compute the Hausdorff and Minkowski dimensions of the projection of these sets onto an affine grid of the unit square. The proof of our Hausdorff dimension formula proceeds via a variational principle over some class of Borel probability measures on the st…
This paper continues the study of the structure of finite intersections of general multiplicative translates $\mathcal{C}(M_1,\ldots,M_n)=\frac{1}{M_1}Σ_{3,\bar{2}}\cap\cdots\cap\frac{1}{M_n}Σ_{3,\bar{2}}$ for integers $1\leq M_1<\cdots<M_n$, where $Σ_{3,\bar{2}}$ denotes the $3$-adic Cantor set. This study was motivated by questions concerning the discrete dynamical system on the $3$-adic integers $\mathbb{Z}_3$ given by multiplication by $2$. The exceptional set $\mathcal{E}(\mathbb{Z}_3)$ is defined to be the set of all elements of $\mathbb{Z}_3$ whose forward orbits under this action inter…

We compute the Hausdorff, upper box and packing dimensions for certain inhomogeneous Moran set constructions. These constructions are beyond the classical theory of iterated function systems, as different nonlinear contraction transformations are applied at each step. Moreover, we also allow the contractions to be weakly conformal and consider situations where the contraction rates have an infimum of zero. In addition, the basic sets of the construction are allowed to have a complicated topology such as having fractal boundaries. Using techniques from thermodynamic formalism we calculate the f…
We consider infinite iterated function systems $\{f_i\}_{i=1}^{\infty}$ on $[0,1]$ with a polynomially increasing contraction rate. We look at subsets of such systems where we only allow iterates $f_{i_1}\circ f_{i_2}\circ f_{i_3}\circ...$ if $i_n>Φ(i_{n-1})$ for certain increasing functions $Φ:\mathbb{N}\rightarrow\mathbb{N}$. We compute both the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of such sets. Our results generalize work of Ramharter which shows that the set of continued fractions with strictly increasing digits has Hausdorff dimension 1/2.
We study non-autonomous conformal iterated function systems, with finite or countably infinite alphabet alike. These differ from the usual (autonomous) iterated function systems in that the contractions applied at each step in time are allowed to vary. (In the case where all maps are affine similarities, the resulting system is also called a "Moran set construction".) We shall show that, given a suitable restriction on the growth of the number of contractions used at each step, the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of such a system is determined by an equation known as Bowen's formula. We a…
We investigate the box-counting dimension of the image of a set $E \subset \mathbb{R}$ under a random multiplicative cascade function $f$. The corresponding result for Hausdorff dimension was established by Benjamini and Schramm in the context of random geometry, and for sufficiently regular sets, the same formula holds for the box-counting dimension. However, we show that this is far from true in general, and we compute explicitly a formula of a very different nature that gives the almost sure box-counting dimension of the random image $f(E)$ when the set $E$ comprises a convergent sequence. …
We show that Bowen's equation, which characterises the Hausdorff dimension of certain sets in terms of the topological pressure of an expanding conformal map, applies in greater generality than has been heretofore established. In particular, we consider an arbitrary subset Z of a compact metric space and require only that the lower Lyapunov exponents be positive on Z, together with a tempered contraction condition. Among other things, this allows us to compute the dimension spectrum for Lyapunov exponents for maps with parabolic periodic points, and to relate the Hausdorff dimension to the top…
The flow of contracting systems contracts 1-dimensional parallelotopes, i.e., line segments, at an exponential rate. One reason for the usefulness of contracting systems is that many interconnections of contracting sub-systems yield an overall contracting system. A generalization of contracting systems is $k$-contracting systems, where $k\in\{1,\dots,n\}$. The flow of such systems contracts the volume of $k$-dimensional parallelotopes at an exponential rate, and in particular they reduce to contracting systems when $k=1$. It was shown by Muldowney and Li that time-invariant $2$-contracting sys…
Singular vectors are those for which the quality of rational approximations provided by Dirichlet's Theorem can be improved by arbitrarily small multiplicative constants. We provide an upper bound on the Hausdorff dimension of singular vectors lying on self-similar fractals in $\mathbb{R}^d$ satisfying the open set condition. The bound is in terms of quantities which are closely tied to Frostman exponents of projections of the Hausdorff measure supported on the fractal. Our bound is optimal in the sense that it agrees with the exact dimension of singular vectors obtained by Cheung and Chevalli…
