We consider subsets of the (symbolic) sequence space that are invariant under the action of the semigroup of multiplicative integers. A representative example is the collection of all 0-1 sequences $(x_k)$ such that $x_k x_{2k}=0$ for all $k$. We compute the Hausdorff and Minkowski dimensions of these sets and show that they are typically different. The proof proceeds via a variational principle for multiplicative subshifts.
How many fractals exist in nature or the virtual world In this work, we partially answer the second question using Mandelbrots fundamental definition of fractals and their quantities of the Hausdorff dimension and Lebesgue measure. We prove the existence of beth-two of virtual fractals with a Hausdorff dimension of a bivariate function of them and the given Lebesgue measure. The question remains unanswered for other fractal dimensions.
In this work we are interested in the self--affine fractals studied by Gatzouras and Lalley and by the author which generalize the famous general Sierpinski carpets studied by Bedford and McMullen. We give a formula for the Hausdorff dimension of sets which are randomly generated using a finite number of self-affine transformations each one generating a fractal set as mentioned before, with some technical hypotheses. The choice of the transformation is random according to a Bernoulli measure. The formula is given in terms of the variational principle for the dimension.
In an earlier work, joint with R. Kenyon, we computed the Hausdorff dimension of the "multiplicative golden mean shift" defined as the set of all reals in [0,1] whose binary expansion (x_k) satisfies x_k x_{2k}=0 for all k=1,2... Here we show that this set has infinite Hausdorff measure in its dimension. A more precise result in terms of gauges in which the Hausdorff measure is infinite is also obtained.
There are many research available on the study of real-valued fractal interpolation function and fractal dimension of its graph. In this paper, our main focus is to study the dimensional results for vector-valued fractal interpolation function and its Riemann-Liouville fractional integral. Here, we give some results which ensure that dimensional results for vector-valued functions are quite different from real-valued functions. We determine interesting bounds for the Hausdorff dimension of the graph of vector-valued fractal interpolation function. We also obtain bounds for the Hausdorff dimens…
Mean Hausdorff dimension is a dynamical version of Hausdorff dimension. It provides a way to dynamicalize geometric measure theory. We pick up the following three classical results of fractal geometry. (1) The calculation of Hausdorff dimension of homogeneous sets in the circle. (2) The coincidence of Hausdorff and Minkowski dimensions for self-similar sets. (3) The calculation of Hausdorff dimension of Bedford--McMullen carpets. We develop their analogues for mean Hausdorff dimension: (1) The calculation of mean Hausdorff dimension of homogeneous systems in the infinite dimensional torus. (2)…
For simplest colored branching processes we prove an analog to the McMillan theorem and calculate Hausdorff dimensions of random fractals defined in terms of the limit behavior of empirical measures generated by finite genetic lines. In this setting the role of Shannon's entropy is played by the Kullback--Leibler divergence and the Hausdorff dimensions are computed by means of the so-called Billingsley--Kullback entropy, defined in the paper.
We prove that for random affine code tree fractals the affinity dimension is almost surely equal to the unique zero of the pressure function. As a consequence, we show that the Hausdorff, packing and box counting dimensions of such systems are equal to the zero of the pressure. In particular, we do not presume the validity of the Falconer-Sloan condition or any other additional assumptions which have been essential in all the previously known results.
The cookie-cutter-like set is defined as the limit set of a sequence of classical cookie-cutter mappings. For this cookie-cutter set it is shown that the topological pressure function exists, and that the fractal dimensions such as the Hausdorff dimension, the packing dimension and the box-counting dimension are all equal to the unique zero $h$ of the pressure function. Moreover, it is shown that the $h$-dimensional Hausdorff measure and the $h$-dimensional packing measure are finite and positive.
We compute the Hausdorff and Minkowski dimension of subsets of the symbolic space $Σ_m=\{0,...,m-1\}^\N$ that are invariant under multiplication by integers. The results apply to the sets $\{x\in Σ_m: \forall\, k, \ x_k x_{2k}... x_{n k}=0\}$, where $n\ge 3$. We prove that for such sets, the Hausdorff and Minkowski dimensions typically differ.
We compute the Hausdorff dimension of the "multiplicative golden mean shift" defined as the set of all reals in $[0,1]$ whose binary expansion $(x_k)$ satisfies $x_k x_{2k}=0$ for all $k\ge 1$, and show that it is smaller than the Minkowski dimension.
We study natural measures on sets of beta-expansions and on slices through self similar sets. In the setting of beta-expansions, these allow us to better understand the measure of maximal entropy for the random beta-transformation and to reinterpret a result of Lindenstrauss, Peres and Schlag in terms of equidistribution. Each of these applications is relevant to the study of Bernoulli convolutions. In the fractal setting this allows us to understand how to disintegrate Hausdorff measure by slicing, leading to conditions under which almost every slice through a self similar set has positive Ha…
We study several fractal properties of the Weierstrass-type function \[ W(x)=\sum_{n=0} ^\infty λ(x) λ(τx) \cdots λ(τ^{n-1}x)\, g(τ^n x), \] where $τ:[0,1)\to[0,1)$ is a cookie cutter map with possibly fractal repeller, and $λ$ and $g$ are functions with proper regularity. In the first part, we determine the box dimension of the graph of $W$ and Hausdorff dimension of its randomised version. In the second part, the Housdorff spectrum of the local Hölder exponent is characterised in terms of thermodynamic formalisms. Furthermore, in the randomised case, a novel formula for the lifted Hausdorff …
The $k$ multiplicative and $k$ additive compounds of a matrix play an important role in geometry, multi-linear algebra, the asymptotic analysis of nonlinear dynamical systems, and in bounding the Hausdorff dimension of fractal sets. These compounds are defined for integer values of $k$. Here, we introduce generalizations called the $α$ multiplicative and $α$ additive compounds of a square matrix, with $α$ real. We study the properties of these new compounds and demonstrate an application in the context of the Douady and Oesterlé Theorem. This leads to a generalization of contracting systems to…
In contrast to the univariate case, several definitions are available for the notion of bounded variation for a bivariate function. This article is an attempt to study the Hausdorff dimension and box dimension of the graph of a continuous function defined on a rectangular region in R2, which is of bounded variation according to some of these approaches. We show also that the Riemann-Liouville fractional integral of a function of bounded variation in the sense of Arzela is of bounded variation in the same sense. Further, we deduce the Hausdorff dimension and box dimension of the graph of the fr…
A simple method of calculating the Hausdorff-Besicovitch dimension of the Kronecker Product based fractals is presented together with a compact R script realizing it. The proposed new formula is based on traditionally used values of the number of self-similar objects and the scale factor that are now calculated using appropriate values of both the initial fractal matrix and the second order resultant matrix. This method is reliable and producing dimensions equal to many already determined values of well-known fractals.
We consider iterated function systems on the real line that consist of continuous, piecewise linear functions. Under a mild separation condition, we show that the Hausdorff and box dimensions of the attractor are equal to the minimum of 1 and the exponent which comes from the most natural system of covers of the attractor.
We study bifurcations of invariant graphs in skew product dynamical systems driven by hyperbolic surface maps T like Anosov surface diffeomorphisms or baker maps and with one-dimensional concave fibre maps under multiplicative forcing when the forcing is scaled by a parameter r=e^{-t}. For a range of parameters two invariant graphs (a trivial and a non-trivial one) coexist, and we use thermodynamic formalism to characterize the parameter dependence of the Hausdorff and packing dimension of the set of points where both graphs coincide. As a corollary we characterize the parameter dependence of …
Fractal measures of images of continuous maps from the set of p-adic numbers Qp into complex plane C are analyzed. Examples of "anomalous" fractals, i.e. the sets where the D-dimensional Hausdorff measures (HM) are trivial, i.e. either zero, or sigma-infinite (D is the Hausdorff dimension (HD) of this set) are presented. Using the Caratheodory construction, the generalized scale-covariant HM (GHM) being non-trivial on such fractals are constructed. In particular, we present an example of 0-fractal, the continuum with HD=0 and nontrivial GHM invariant w.r.t. the group of all diffeomorphisms C. …
We introduce a technique that uses projection properties of fractal percolation to establish dimension conservation results for sections of deterministic self-similar sets. For example, let $K$ be a self-similar subset of $\mathbb{R}^2$ with Hausdorff dimension $\dim_H K >1$ such that the rotational components of the underlying similarities generate the full rotation group. Then for all $ε>0$, writing $π_θ$ for projection onto the line $L_θ$ in direction $θ$, the Hausdorff dimensions of the sections satisfy $\dim_H (K\cap π_θ^{-1}x)> \dim_H K - 1 - ε$ for a set of $x \in L_θ$ of positive Lebes…
In this paper, we will consider subfractals of hyperbolic iterated function systems which satisfy the open set condition. The subfractals will consist of points associated with infinite strings from a subshift of finite type or sofic subshift on the symbolic space. We find that the zeros of the lower and upper topological pressure functions are lower and upper bounds, respectively, for the Hausdorff, packing, lower and upper box dimensions of the subfractal.
Fractal dimension constitutes the main tool to test for fractal patterns in Euclidean contexts. For this purpose, it is always used the box dimension, since it is easy to calculate, though the Hausdorff dimension, which is the oldest and also the most accurate fractal dimension, presents the best analytical properties. Additionally, fractal structures provide an appropriate topological context where new models of fractal dimension for a fractal structure could be developed in order to generalize the classical models of fractal dimension. In this paper, we provide some counterexamples regarding…
We highlight a connection between Diophantine approximation and the lower Assouad dimension by using information about the latter to show that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of badly approximable points that lie in certain non-conformal fractals, known as self-affine sponges, is bounded below by the dynamical dimension of these fractals. In particular, for self-affine sponges with equal Hausdorff and dynamical dimensions, the set of badly approximable points has full Hausdorff dimension in the sponge. Our results, which are the first to advance beyond the conformal setting, encompass both …
Suppose $X$ is a compact connected metric space and $f: X \to X$ is a metric coarse expanding conformal map in the sense of Haïssinsky-Pilgrim. We show that if $X$ contains a homeomorphic copy of the letter "Y", then the Hausdorff dimension of $X$ is greater than one. As an application, we show that for a semi-hyperbolic rational map $f$ its Julia set $\mathcal{J}_f$ is quasi-symmetric equivalent to a space having Hausdorff dimension 1 if and only if $\mathcal{J}_f$ is homeomorphic to a circle or a closed interval.
In this paper, we characterize a novel separation property for IFS-attractors on complete metric spaces. Such a separation property is weaker than the strong open set condition (SOSC) and becomes necessary to reach the equality between the similarity and the Hausdorff dimensions of strict self-similar sets. We also investigate the size of the overlaps from the viewpoint of that separation property. In addition, we contribute some equivalent conditions to reach the equality between the similarity dimension and a new Hausdorff type dimension for IFS-attractors introduced by the authors in terms …
We study the collection of microsets of randomly constructed fractals, which in this paper, are referred to as Galton-Watson fractals. This is a model that generalizes Mandelbrot percolation, where Galton-Watson trees (whose offspring distribution is not necessarily binomial) are projected to $\mathbb{R}^d$ by a coding map which arises from an iterated function system (IFS) of similarity maps. We show that for such a random fractal $E$, whenever the underlying IFS satisfies the open set condition, almost surely the Assouad dimension of $E$ is the maximal Hausdorff dimension of a set in $\text{…
In this article, we investigate the fractal dimension of the graph of the mixed Riemann-Liouville fractional integral for various choice of continuous functions on a rectangular region. We estimate bounds for the box dimension and the Hausdorff dimension of the graph of the mixed Riemann-Liouville fractional integral of the functions which belong to the class of continuous functions and the class of Holder continuous functions. We also show that the box dimension of the graph of the mixed Riemann-Liouville fractional integral of two-dimensional continuous functions is also two. Furthermore, we…
We consider limit sets of some conformal iterated function systems, and introduce classes of subsets of the limit set, with the property that the classes are closed under countable intersections and all sets in the classes have large Hausdorff dimension. We show some applications in ergodic theory, Diophantine approximation and complex dynamics.
We calculate the almost sure Hausdorff dimension of uniformly random self-similar fractals. These random fractals are generated from a finite family of similarities, where the linear parts of the mappings are independent uniformly distributed random variables at each step of iteration. We also prove that the Lebesgue measure of such sets is almost surely positive in some cases.
We explore the problem of finding the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points that recur to shrinking targets on a self-affine fractal. To be exact, we study the dimension of a certain related symbolic recurrence set. In many cases this set is equivalent to the recurring set on the fractal.
We consider the action of Mandelbrot multiplicative cascades on probability measures supported on a symbolic space. For general probability measures, we obtain almost a sharp criterion of non-degeneracy of the limiting measure; it relies on the lower and upper Hausdorff dimensions of the measure and the entropy of the random weights. We also obtain sharp bounds for the lower Hausdorff and upper packing dimensions of the limiting measure. When the original measure is a Gibbs measure associated with a potential of certain modulus of continuity (weaker than Hölder), all our results are sharp. Thi…
We calculate the almost sure Hausdorff dimension for a general class of random affine planar code tree fractals. The set of probability measures describing the randomness includes natural measures in random $V$-variable and homogeneous Markov constructions.
Singular vectors are those for which the quality of rational approximations provided by Dirichlet's Theorem can be improved by arbitrarily small multiplicative constants. We provide an upper bound on the Hausdorff dimension of singular vectors lying on self-similar fractals in $\mathbb{R}^d$ satisfying the open set condition. The bound is in terms of quantities which are closely tied to Frostman exponents of projections of the Hausdorff measure supported on the fractal. Our bound is optimal in the sense that it agrees with the exact dimension of singular vectors obtained by Cheung and Chevalli…
Motivated by a question of Erdős, this paper considers questions concerning the discrete dynamical system on the 3-adic integers given by multiplication by 2. Let the 3-adic Cantor set consist of all 3-adic integers whose expansions use only the digits 0 and 1. The exception set is the set of 3-adic integers whose forward orbits under this action intersects the 3-adic Cantor set infinitely many times. It has been shown that this set has Hausdorff dimension 0. Approaches to upper bounds on the Hausdorff dimensions of these sets leads to study of intersections of multiplicative translates of Can…
Hausdorff dimensions of level sets of generic continuous functions defined on fractals can give information about the "thickness/narrow cross-sections'' of a "network" corresponding to a fractal set, $F$. This lead to the definition of the topological Hausdorff dimension of fractals. In this paper we continue our study of the level sets of generic $1$-Hölder-$α$ functions. While in a previous paper we gave the initial definitions and established some properties of these generic level sets, in this paper we provide numerical estimates in the case of the Sierpiński triangle. These calculations g…
The self-similar structure of the attracting subshift of a primitive substitution is carried over to the limit set of the repelling tree in the boundary of Outer Space of the corresponding irreducible outer automorphism of a free group. Thus, this repelling tree is self-similar (in the sense of graph directed constructions). Its Hausdorff dimension is computed. This reveals the fractal nature of the attracting tree in the boundary of Outer Space of an irreducible outer automorphism of a free group.
We investigate subsets of a multifractal decomposition of the limit set of a conformal graph directed Markov system, which is constructed from the Cayley graph of a free group with at least two generators. The subsets we consider are parametrised by a normal subgroup $N$ of the free group and mimic the radial limit set of a Kleinian group. Our main results show that, regarding the Hausdorff dimension of these sets, various results for Kleinian groups can be generalised. Namely, under certain natural symmetry assumptions on the multifractal decomposition, we prove that, for a subset parametrise…
