We introduce a version of Voiculescu-Brown approximation entropy for isometric automorphisms of Banach spaces and develop within this framework the connection between dynamics and the local theory of Banach spaces discovered by Glasner and Weiss. Our fundamental result concerning this contractive approximation entropy, or CA entropy, characterizes the occurrence of positive values both geometrically and topologically. This leads to various applications; for example, we obtain a geometric description of the topological Pinsker factor and show that a C*-algebra is type I if and only if every multiplier inner *-automorphism has zero CA entropy. We also examine the behaviour of CA entropy under various product constructions and determine its value in many examples, including isometric automorphisms of l_p spaces and noncommutative tensor product shifts.
We introduce and study two notions of entropy in a Banach space X with a normalized Schauder basis . The geometric entropy E(A) of a subset A of X is defined to be the infimum of radii of compact bricks containing A. We obtain several compactness characterizations for bricks (Theorem 3.7) useful for main results. We also obtain sufficient conditions on a set in a Hilbert space to have finite unconditional entropy. For Banach spaces without a Schauder basis we offer another entropy, called the Auerbach entropy. Finally, we pose some open problems.
Let $X$ be a quasi-Banach space, $Y$ a $γ$-Banach space $(0<γ\leq 1)$ and $T$ a bounded linear operator from $X$ into $Y$. In this paper, we prove that the first outer entropy number of $T$ lies between $2^{1-1/γ}\|T\|$ and $\|T\|$; more precisely, $2^{1-1/γ}\|T\| \leq e_1(T) \leq \|T\|,$ and the constant $2^{1-1/γ}$ is sharp. Moreover, we show that there exist a Banach space $X_0$, a $γ$-Banach space $Y_0$ and a bounded linear operator $T_0:X_0 \rightarrow Y_0$ such that $0 \neq e_k(T_0) = 2^{1-1/γ}\|T_0\| $ for all positive integers $k.$ Finally, the paper also provides two-sided estimates f…
The representation theorems of Gelfand and Kakutani for commutative C*-algebras and AM- and AL-spaces are the basis for the Koopman linearization of topological and measure-preserving dynamical systems. In this article we prove versions of these results for dynamics on topological and measurable Banach bundles and the corresponding weighted Koopman representations on Banach modules.
We study the metric entropy of the metric space $B_n$ of all n-dimensional Banach spaces (the so-called Banach-Mazur compactum) equipped with the Banach-Mazur (multiplicative) "distance" $d$. We are interested either in estimates independent of the dimension or in asymptotic estimates when the dimension tends to $\infty$. For instance, we prove that, if $N({B_n},d, 1+\varepsilon)$ is the smallest number of "balls" of "radius" $1+\varepsilon$ that cover $ B_n$, then for any $\varepsilon>0$ we have $$0<\liminf_{n\to \infty}n^{-1} \log\log N(B_n,d,1+\varepsilon)\le \limsup_{n\to \infty}n^{-1} \lo…
For a topological group G, we show that a compact metric G-space is tame if and only if it can be linearly represented on a separable Banach space which does not contain an isomorphic copy of $l_1$ (we call such Banach spaces, Rosenthal spaces). With this goal in mind we study tame dynamical systems and their representations on Banach spaces.
We prove that the crossed product Banach algebra $\ell^1(G,A;α)$ that is associated with a ${\mathrm C}^\ast$-dynamical system $(A,G,α)$ is amenable if $G$ is a discrete amenable group and $A$ is a strongly amenable ${\mathrm C}^\ast$-algebra. This is a consequence of the combination of a more general result with Paterson's characterisation of strongly amenable unital $\mathrm{C}^\ast$-algebras in terms of invariant means for their unitary groups.
Contraction rates of time-varying maps induced by dynamical systems illuminate a wide range of asymptotic properties with applications in stability analysis and control theory. In finite-dimensional smoothly varying inner-product spaces such as $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\mathbb{C}^n$ with Riemannian metrics, contraction rates can be estimated by upper-bounding the real numerical range of the vector field's Jacobian. However, vector spaces with norms other than $L^2$ commonly arise in the stability analysis of infinite-dimensional systems such as those arising from partial differential equations and …
Let $F:X\to X$ be a $C^2_\loc$ map in a Banach space $X$, and $A$ be its Frèchet derivative at the element $w:=w_\ve$, which solves the problem $(\ast) \dotw=-A^{-1}_\ve(F(w)+\ve w)$, $w(0)=w_0$, where $A_\ve:=A+\ve I$. Assume that $\|A^{-1}_\ve\|\leq c \ve^{-k}$, $0<k\leq 1$, $0<\ve>\ve_0$. Then $(\ast)$ has a unique global solution, $w(t)$, there exists $w(\infty)$, and $(\ast\ast) F(w(\infty))+\ve w(\infty)=0$. Thus the DSM (Dynamical Systems Method) is justified for equation $(\ast\ast)$. The limit of $w_\ve$ as $\ve\to 0$ is studied.
To every Banach space V we associate a compact right topological affine semigroup E(V). We show that a separable Banach space V is Asplund if and only if E(V) is metrizable, and it is Rosenthal (i.e. it does not contain an isomorphic copy of $l_1$) if and only if E(V) is a Rosenthal compactum. We study representations of compact right topological semigroups in E(V). In particular, representations of tame and HNS-semigroups arise naturally as enveloping semigroups of tame and HNS (hereditarily non-sensitive) dynamical systems, respectively. As an application we obtain a generalization of a theo…
Denote by $X$ a Banach space and by $T : X \to X$ a bounded linear operator with non-trivial kernel satisfying suitable conditions. We consider the concepts of entropy - for $T$-invariant probability measures - and pressure for Hölder continuous potentials. We also prove the existence of ground states (the limit when temperature goes to zero) associated with such class of potentials when the Banach space $X$ is equipped with a Schauder basis. We produce an example concerning weighted shift operators defined on the Banach spaces $c_0(\mathbb{R})$ and $l^p(\mathbb{R})$, $1 \leq p < +\infty$, whe…
We prove that, under certain conditions, uniform weak mixing (to zero) of the bounded sequences in Banach space implies uniform weak mixing of its tensor product. Moreover, we prove that ergodicity of tensor product of the sequences in Banach space implies its weak mixing. Applications of the obtained results, we prove that tensor product of uniquely $E$-weak mixing $C^*$-dynamical systems is also uniquely $E$-weak mixing as well.
We construct a crossed product Banach algebra from a Banach algebra dynamical system $(A,G,α)$ and a given uniformly bounded class $R$ of continuous covariant Banach space representations of that system. If $A$ has a bounded left approximate identity, and $R$ consists of non-degenerate continuous covariant representations only, then the non-degenerate bounded representations of the crossed product are in bijection with the non-degenerate $R$-continuous covariant representations of the system. This bijection, which is the main result of the paper, is also established for involutive Banach algeb…
If $X$ is a compact Hausdorff space and $σ$ is a homeomorphism of $X$, then a Banach algebra $\ell^1(Σ)$ of crossed product type is naturally associated with this topological dynamical system $Σ=(X,σ)$. If $X$ consists of one point, then $\ell^1(Σ)$ is the group algebra of the integers. We study the algebraically irreducible representations of $\ell^1(Σ)$ on complex vector spaces, its primitive ideals and its structure space. The finite dimensional algebraically irreducible representations are determined up to algebraic equivalence, and a sufficiently rich family of infinite dimensional algebr…
We prove that for any two quasi-Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ and any $α>0$ there exists a constant $γ_α>0$ such that $$ \sup_{1\le k\le n}k^αe_k(T)\le γ_α\sup_{1\le k\le n} k^αc_k(T) $$ holds for all linear and bounded operators $T:X\to Y$. Here $e_k(T)$ is the $k$-th entropy number of $T$ and $c_k(T)$ is the $k$-th Gelfand number of $T$. For Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ this inequality is widely used and well-known as Carl's inequality. For general quasi-Banach spaces it is a new result.
A 1972 duality conjecture due to Pietsch asserts that the entropy numbers of a compact operator acting between two Banach spaces and those of its adjoint are (in an appropriate sense) equivalent. This is equivalent to a dimension free inequality relating covering (or packing) numbers for convex bodies to those of their polars. The duality conjecture has been recently proved (see math.FA/0407236) in the central case when one of the Banach spaces is Hilbertian, which - in the geometric setting - corresponds to a duality result for symmetric convex bodies in Euclidean spaces. In the present paper…
If we change the upper and lower density in the definition of distributional chaos of a continuous linear operator on Banach space by the Banach upper and Banach lower density, respectively, we obtain Li-Yorke chaos. Motivated by this fact, we introduce the notions of reiterative distributional chaos of types $1$, $1^+$ and $2$ for continuous linear operators on Banach spaces, which are characterized in terms of the existence of an irregular vector with additional properties. Moreover, we study its relations with other dynamical properties and give conditions for the existence of a vector subs…
A well-known result in the area of dynamical systems asserts that any invertible hyperbolic operator on any Banach space is structurally stable. This result was originally obtained by P. Hartman in 1960 for operators on finite-dimensional spaces. The general case was independently obtained by J. Palis and C. Pugh around 1968. We will exhibit examples of structurally stable operators that are not hyperbolic, thereby showing that the converse of the above-mentioned result is false in general. We will also prove that an invertible operator on a Banach space is hyperbolic if and only if it is expa…
Motivated from two decades old famous Feichtinger conjectures for frames, $R_\varepsilon$-conjecture and Weaver's conjecture for Hilbert spaces (and their solution by Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava), we formulate Feichtinger conjectures for p-approximate Schauder frames, $R_\varepsilon$-conjecture, Weaver's conjectures and Akemann-Weaver conjectures for Banach spaces. We also formulate conjectures on p-approximate Schauder frames based on the results of Casazza for frames for Hilbert spaces. We state conjectures and problems for p-approximate Schauder frames based on fundamental inequality f…
In analogy with the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of a group, we associate to a unital discrete twisted C*-dynamical system a Banach algebra whose elements are coefficients of equivariants representations of the system. Building upon our previous work, we show that this Fourier-Stieltjes algebra embeds continuously in the Banach algebra of completely bounded multipliers of the (reduced or full) C*-crossed product of the system. We also introduce a notion of positive definiteness and prove a Gelfand-Raikov type theorem allowing us to describe the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of a system in a more intr…
We study different pointwise recurrence notions for linear dynamical systems from the Ergodic Theory point of view. We show that from any reiteratively recurrent vector $x_0$, for an adjoint operator $T$ on a separable dual Banach space $X$, one can construct a $T$-invariant probability measure which contains $x_0$ in its support. This allows us to establish some equivalences, for these operators, between some strong pointwise recurrence notions which in general are completely distinguished. In particular, we show that (in our framework) reiterative recurrence coincides with frequent recurrenc…
The purpose of this article is to develop a technique to estimate certain bounds for entropy numbers of diagonal operator on spaces of p-summable sequences for finite p greater than 1. The approximation method we develop in this direction works for a very general class of operators between Banach spaces, in particular reflexive spaces. As a consequence of this technique we also obtain that the entropy number of a bounded linear operator T between two separable Hilbert spaces is equal to the entropy number of the adjoint of T. This gives a complete answer to the question posed by B. Carl [4] in…
