For any complex Banach space $X$, let $J$ denote the duality mapping of $X$. For any unit vector $x$ in $X$ and any ($C_0$) contraction semigroup $(T_t)_{t>0}$ on $X$, Baillon and Guerre-Delabriere proved that if $X$ is a smooth reflexive Banach space and if there is $x^* \in J(x)$ such that $|\langle T(t) \, x,J(x)\rangle| \to 1 $ as $t \to \infty$, then there is a unit vector $y\in X$ which is an eigenvector of the generator $A$ of $(T_t)_{t>0}$ associated with a purely imaginary eigenvalue. They asked whether this result is still true if $X$ is replaced by $c_o$. In this article, we show the answer is negative.
Let $A_1,\ldots,A_d$ be a $d$-tuple of commuting dissipative operators on a separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. Using the theory of operator vessels and their associated systems, we give a construction of a dilation of the multi-parameter semigroup of contractions on $\mathcal{H}$ given by $e^{i \sum_{j=1}^d t_j A_j}$.
These are the notes of a lecture given at the university of Wroclaw in 1996. We present results of semigroups of (sub)positive contractions on L^p-spaces. The dilation theorem of Akcoglue and sucheston is considered as a starting point. We construct a dilation of a strongly continuous semigroup of (sub)positive contractions on L^p-space, 1<p<infinity by a strongly continuous group of invertible isometries acting on some larger L^p-space. The transference results, for functions of the generators, are established as well as some square and maximal functions. This applies especially to sub-markov…
Let $X$ be a complex Banach space and let $J:X \to X^*$ be a duality section on $X$ (i.e. $\langle x,J(x)\rangle=\|J(x)\|\|x\|=\|J(x)\|^2=\|x\|^2$). For any unit vector $x$ and any ($C_0$) contraction semigroup $T=\{e^{tA}:t \geq 0\}$, Goldstein proved that if $X$ is a Hilbert space and if $|\langle T(t) x,J(x)\rangle| \to 1 $ as $t \to \infty$, then $x$ is an eigenvector of $A$ corresponding to a purely imaginary eigenvalue. In this article, we prove the similar result holds if $X$ is a strictly convex complex Banach space.
The collection $\frk{C}_3$ of all triples of commuting contractions forms a family in the sense of Agler, and so has an "optimal" model $\pd\frk{C}_3$ generated by its extremal elements. A given $T\in\frk{C}_3$ is extremal if every $X\in\frk{C}_3$ extending $T$ is an extension by direct sum. We show that many of the known examples of triples in $\frk{C}_3$ that fail to have coisometric extensions are in fact extremal.
We apply a method developed by one of the authors, see \cite{Arl1}, to localize the numerical range of \textit{quasi-sectorial} contractions semigroups. Our main theorem establishes a relation between the numerical range of quasi-sectorial contraction semigroups $\{\exp(- t S)\}_{t\ge 0}$, and the maximal {sectorial} generators $S$. We also give a new prove of the rate $O(1/n)$ for the operator-norm Euler formula approximation: $\exp(- t S)=\lim\limits_{n\to \infty}(I+tS/n)^{-n}$, $t\ge 0$, for this class of semigroups.
The main objective of the present work is to study contraction semigroups generated by Laplace operators on metric graphs, which are not necessarily self-adjoint. We prove criteria for such semigroups to be continuity and positivity preserving. Also we provide a characterization of generators of Feller semigroups on metric graphs.
We prove that every generator of a symmetric contraction semigroup on a $σ$-finite measure space admits, for $1<p<\infty$, a Hörmander-type holomorphic functional calculus on $L^p$ in the sector of angle $ϕ^*_p=\arcsin|1-2/p|$. The obtained angle is optimal.
In this paper we extend the Lumer-Phillips theorem to the context of two--parameter C_0-semigroup of contractions. That is, we characterize the infinitesimal generators of two--parameter C_0-semigroups of contractions. Conditions on the behavior of the resolvent of operators, which are necessary and sufficient for the pair of operators to be the infinitesimal generator of a C_0-semigroup of contractions are given.
Recently, the following novel method for proving the existence of solutions for certain linear time-invariant PDEs was introduced: The operator associated to a given PDE is represented by a (larger) operator with an internal loop. If the larger operator (without the internal loop) generates a contraction semigroup, the internal loop is accretive, and some non-restrictive technical assumptions are fulfilled, then the original operator generates a contraction semigroup as well. Beginning with the undamped wave equation, this general idea can be applied to show that the heat equation and wave equ…
We revise the notion of the quasi-sectorial contractions. Our main theorem establishes a relation between semigroups of quasi-sectorial contractions and a class of m-sectorial generators. We discuss a relevance of this kind of contractions to the theory of operator-norm approximations of strongly continuous semigroups.
The purpose of the present notes is to examine the following issues related to the the Chernoff estimate: (1) For contractions on a Banach space we modify the $\sqrt{n}$-estimate and apply it in the proof of the Chernoff product formula for $C_0$-semigroups in the \textit{strong} operator topology. (2) We use the idea of a {probabilistic} approach, proving the Chernoff estimate in the strong operator topology, to uplift it to the \textit{operator-norm} estimate for \textit{quasi-sectorial} contraction semigroups. (3) The operator-norm Chernoff estimate is applied to {quasi-sectorial} contracti…
This note records some dilation theorems about contraction semigroups on a Hilbert space - all of which fall into the categories "known" or "probably known" - that I proved while working on my PhD in mathematics (under the supervision of Baruch Solel). It is convenient to have them recorded for reference.
Let $\{T_t\}_{t>0}$ be a strongly continuous semigroup of positive contractions on $L_p(X,μ)$ with $1<p<\infty$. Let $E$ be a UMD Banach lattice of measurable functions on another measure space $(Ω,ν)$. For $f\in L_p(X; E)$ define $$\mathcal M(f)(x, ω)=\sup_{t>0}\frac1t\Big|\int_0^tT_s(f(\cdot,ω))(x)ds\Big|,\quad (x,ω)\in X\timesΩ.$$ Then the following maximal ergodic inequality holds $$\big\|\mathcal M(f)\big\|_{L_p(X; E)}\lesssim \big\|f\big\|_{L_p(X; E)},\quad f\in L_p(X; E).$$ If the semigroup $\{T_t\}_{t>0}$ is additionally assumed to be analytic, then $\{T_t\}_{t>0}$ extends to an analyt…
A contraction semigroup T on a Hilbert space H and its cogenerator S define an algebra, the limit algebra - which determines the structure of the subspace of weakly Poisson recurrent vectors and gives a necessary and sufficient condition for T and S to be weakly stable equivalent.
This paper considers universal Hilbert space operators in the sense of Rota, and gives criteria for universality of semigroups in the context of uniformly continuous semigroups and contraction semigroups. Specific examples are given. Universal semigroups provide models for these classes of semigroups: following a line of research initiated by Shimorin, models for concave semigroups are developed, in terms of shifts on reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces.
We construct the quadratic analogue of the boson Fock functor. While in the first order case all contractions on the 1--particle space can be second quantized, the semigroup of contractions that admit a quadratic second quantization is much smaller due to the nonlinearity. Within this semigroup we characterize the unitary and the isometric elements.
An equivalent formulation of the von Neumann inequality states that the backward shift $S^*$ on $\ell_{2}$ is extremal, in the sense that if $T$ is a Hilbert space contraction, then $\|p(T)\| \leq \|p(S^*)\|$ for each polynomial $p$. We discuss several results of the following type : if $T$ is a Hilbert space contraction satisfying some constraints, then $S^*$ restricted to a suitable invariant subspace is an extremal operator. Several operator radii are used instead of the operator norm. Applications to inequalities of coefficients of rational functions positive on the torus are given.
Assume that a block operator of the form $\left(\begin{smallmatrix}A_{1}\\A_{2}\quad 0\end{smallmatrix}\right)$, acting on the Banach space $X_{1}\times X_{2}$, generates a contraction $C_{0}$-semigroup. We show that the operator $A_{S}$ defined by $A_{S}x=A_{1}\left(\begin{smallmatrix}x\\SA_{2}x\end{smallmatrix}\right)$ with the natural domain generates a contraction semigroup on $X_{1}$. Here, $S$ is a boundedly invertible operator for which $ε\ide-S^{-1}$ is dissipative for some $ε>0$. With this result the existence and uniqueness of solutions of the heat equation can be derived from the wa…
The main purpose of this paper is to prove the mean ergodic theorem for nonexpansive mappings and semigroups in locally compact Hadamard spaces, including finite dimensional Hadamard manifolds. The main tool for proving ergodic convergence is the almost periodicity of orbits of a nonexpansive mapping. Therefore, in the first part of the paper, we study almost periodicity (and as a special case, periodicity) in metric and Hadamard spaces. Then, we prove a mean ergodic theorem for nonexpansive mappings and continuous semigroups of contractions in locally compact Hadamard spaces. Finally, an appl…
We show that any bounded analytic semigroup on $L^p$ (with $1<p<\infty$) whose negative generator admits a bounded $H^{\infty}$ functional calculus with respect to some angle $< π/2$ can be dilated into a bounded analytic semigroup $(R_t)_{t\geq 0}$ on a bigger $L^p$-space in such a way that $R_t$ is a positive contraction for any $t$. We also establish a discrete analogue for Ritt operators and consider the case when $L^p$-spaces are replaced by more general Banach spaces. In connection with these functional calculus issues, we study isometric dilations of bounded continuous representations o…
Consider --- for the generator \({-}A\) of a symmetric contraction semigroup over some measure space $\mathrm{X}$, $1\le p < \infty$, $q$ the dual exponent and given measurable functions $F_j,\: G_j : \mathbb{C}^d \to \mathbb{C}$ --- the statement: $$ \mathrm{Re}\, \sum_{j=1}^m \int_{\mathrm{X}} A F_j(\mathbf{f}) \cdot G_j(\mathbf{f}) \,\,\ge \,\,0 $$ {\em for all $\mathbb{C}^d$-valued measurable functions $\mathbf{f}$ on $\mathrm{X}$ such that $F_j(\mathbf{f}) \in \mathrm{dom}(A_p)$ and $G_j(\mathbf{f}) \in \mathrm{L}^q(\mathrm{X})$ for all $j$.} It is shown that this statement is valid in ge…
We characterise contractivity, boundedness and polynomial boundedness for a C_0-semigroup on a Banach space in terms of its cogenerator V (or the Cayley transform of the generator) or its resolvent. In particular, we extend results of Gomilko and Brenner, Thomee and show that polynomial boundedness of a semigroup implies polynomial boundedness of its cogenerator. As is shown by an example, the result is optimal. For analytic semigroups we show that the converse holds, i.e., polynomial boundedness of the cogenerators implies polynomial boundedness of the semigroup. In addition, we show by simpl…

Let T : Lp --> Lp be a positive contraction, with p strictly between 1 and infinity. Assume that T is analytic, that is, there exists a constant K such that \norm{T^n-T^{n-1}} < K/n for any positive integer n. Let q strictly betweeen 2 and infinity and let v^q be the space of all complex sequences with a finite strong q-variation. We show that for any x in Lp, the sequence ([T^n(x)](λ))_{n\geq 0} belongs to v^q for almost every λ, with an estimate \norm{(T^n(x))_{n\geq 0}}_{Lp(v^q)}\leq C\norm{x}_p. If we remove the analyticity assumption, we obtain a similar estimate for the ergodic averages …
Working over infinite dimensional separable Hilbert spaces, residual results have been achieved for the space of contractive $C_{0}$-semigroups under the topology of uniform weak operator convergence on compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}_{+}$. Eisner and Serény raised in 2009 the open problem: Does this space constitute a Baire space? Observing that the subspace of unitary semigroups is completely metrisable and appealing to known density results, we solve this problem positively by showing that certain topological properties can in general be transferred from dense subspaces to larger spaces. The…
We prove that, in a large class of Banach lattices, the fixed space of each commuting family of positive linear contractions is a lattice subspace. As consequences, new cyclicity results for the peripheral point spectra of positive operators and semigroups are derived; we also pose an open problem that naturally occurs in this context. Finally, a variety of counterexamples is presented to point out some limits of our results.
A recent characterisation of Fock-adapted contraction operator stochastic cocycles on a Hilbert space, in terms of their associated semigroups, yields a general principle for the construction of such cocycles by approximation of their stochastic generators. This leads to new existence results for quantum stochastic differential equations. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for a cocycle to satisfy such an equation.
An operator space analysis of quantum stochastic cocycles is undertaken. These are cocycles with respect to an ampliated CCR flow, adapted to the associated filtration of subspaces, or subalgebras. They form a noncommutative analogue of stochastic semigroups in the sense of Skorohod. One-to-one correspondences are established between classes of cocycle of interest and corresponding classes of one-parameter semigroups on associated matrix spaces. Each of these 'global' semigroups may be viewed as the expectation semigroup of an associated quantum stochastic cocycle on the corresponding matrix s…
In the deBranges-Rovnyak functional model for contractions on Hilbert space, any completely non-coisometric (CNC) contraction is represented as the adjoint of the restriction of the backward shift to a deBranges-Rovnyak space, $\mathscr{H} (b)$, associated to a contractive analytic operator-valued function, $b$, on the open unit disk. We extend this model to a large class of CNC row contractions of several copies of a Hilbert space into itself (including all CNC row contractions with commuting component operators). Namely, we completely characterize the set of all CNC row contractions, $T$, wh…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of contractive operators and strongly continuous semigroups on separable Hilbert spaces using the notion of rigidity. In particular, we show that a "typical" contraction $T$ contains the unit circle times the identity operator in the strong limit set of its powers, while $T^{n_j}$ converges weakly to zero along a sequence $\{n_j\}$ with density one. The continuous analogue is presented for isometric ang unitary $C_0$-(semi)groups.
If $T_t=\rme^{Zt}$ is a positive one-parameter contraction semigroup acting on $l^p(X)$ where $X$ is a countable set and $1\leq p <\infty$, then the peripheral point spectrum $P$ of $Z$ cannot contain any non-zero elements. The same holds for Feller semigroups acting on $L^p(X)$ if $X$ is locally compact.
Inspired by a recent work of Hytönen and Naor, we solve a problem left open in our previous work joint with Mart\'ınez and Torrea on the vector-valued Littlewood-Paley-Stein theory for symmetric diffusion semigroups. We prove a similar result in the discrete case, namely, for any $T$ which is the square of a symmetric Markovian operator on a measure space $(Ω, μ)$. Moreover, we show that $T\otimes{\rm Id}_X$ extends to an analytic contraction on $L_p(Ω; X)$ for any $1<p<\infty$ and any uniformly convex Banach space $X$.
We propose a definition of a "$C^*$-Eberlein" algebra, which is a weak form of a $C^*$-bialgebra with a sort of "unitary generator". Our definition is motivated to ensure that commutative examples arise exactly from semigroups of contractions on a Hilbert space, as extensively studied recently by Spronk and Stokke. The terminology arises as the Eberlein algebra, the uniform closure of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra $B(G)$, has character space $G^{\mathcal E}$, which is the semigroup compactification given by considering all semigroups of contractions on a Hilbert space which contain a dense hom…
We prove that for every semigroup of Schwarz maps on the von~Neumann algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space which has a subinvariant faithful normal state there exists an associated semigroup of contractions on the space of Hilbert-Schmidt operators of the Hilbert space. Moreover, we show that if the original semigroup is weak$^*$ continuous then the associated semigroup is strongly continuous. We introduce the notion of the extended generator of a semigroup on the bounded operators of a Hilbert space with respect to an orthonormal basis of the Hilbert space. We describe th…
We consider isotropic Lévy processes on a compact Riemannian manifold, obtained from an $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued Lévy process through rolling without slipping. We prove that the Feller semigroups associated with these processes extend to strongly continuous contraction semigroups on $L^p$, for $1\leq p<\infty$, and that they are self-adjoint when $p=2$. When the motion has a non-trivial Brownian part, we prove that the generator has a discrete spectrum of eigenvalues and that the semigroup is trace-class.
In this work we construct certain general bundles $<\mathfrak{M},ρ,X>$ and $<\mathfrak{B},η,X>$ of Hausdorff locally convex spaces associated with a given Banach bundle $<\mathfrak{E},π,X>$. Then we present conditions ensuring the existence of bounded sections $\mathcal{U}\in Γ^{x_{\infty}}(ρ)$ and $\mathcal{P}\in Γ^{x_{\infty}}(η)$ both continuous at a point $x_{\infty}\in X$, such that $\mathcal{U}(x)$ is a $C_{0}-$semigroup of contractions on $\mathfrak{E}_{x}$ and $\mathcal{P}(x)$ is a spectral projector of the infinitesimal generator of the semigroup $\mathcal{U}(x)$, for every $x\in X$.
We exhibit large classes of contractions on noncommutative $L^p$-spaces which satisfy the noncommutative analogue of Matsaev's conjecture, introduced by Peller, in 1985. In particular, we prove that every Schur multiplier on a Schatten space $S^p$ induced by a contractive Schur multiplier on $B(\ell^2)$ associated with a real matrix satisfy this conjecture. Moreover, we deal with analogue questions for $C_0$-semigroups. Finally, we disprove a conjecture of Peller concerning norms on the space of complex polynomials arising from Matsaev's conjecture and Peller's problem. Indeed, if $S$ denotes …
Let (P(t)) be the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup associated with the stochastic Cauchy problem dU(t) = AU(t)dt + dW_H(t), where A is the generator of a C_0-semigroup (S(t)) on a Banach space E, H is a Hilbert subspace of E, and (W_H(t)) is an H-cylindrical Brownian motion. Assuming that (S(t)) restricts to a C_0-semigroup on H, we obtain L^p-bounds for the gradient D_H P(t). We show that if (P(t)) is analytic, then the invariance assumption is fulfilled. As an application we determine the L^p-domain of the generator of (P(t)) explicitly in the case where (S(t)) restricts to a C_0-semigroup on H …
