We give a new proof of the classification of normal singular surface germs admitting non-invertible holomorphic self-maps and due to J. Wahl. We then draw an analogy between the birational classification of singular holomorphic foliations on surfaces, and the dynamics of holomorphic maps. Following this analogy, we introduce the notion of minimal holomorphic model for holomorphic maps. We give sufficient conditions which ensure the uniqueness of such a model.
In this work, we study dominant rational maps preserving singular holomorphic codimension one foliations on projective manifolds and that exhibit non-trivial transverse dynamics.
We give a brief survey on the entropy of holomorphic self maps $f$ of compact Kähler manifolds, and rational dominating self maps $f$ of smooth projective varieties. We emphasize the connection between the entropy and the spectral radii of the induced action of $f$ on the homology of the compact manifold. The main conjecture for the rational maps states that modulo birational isomorphism all various notions of entropy and the spectral radii are equal.
Answering a problem raised by Lazarsfeld, Hwang and Mok proved that a surjective holomorphic map from a rational homogeneous space of Picard number 1 onto projective manifold different from projective space must be a biholomorphism. THe aim of this paper is to generalized this result to irreducible rational homogeneous space of higher Picard number.
We study families of rational curves on certain irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties. In particular, we prove that any ample linear system on a projective holomorphic symplectic variety of K3[n]-type contains a uniruled divisor. As an application we provide a generalization of the Beauville-Voisin result on the Chow group of 0-cycles on such varieties.
We prove that any compact Kähler manifold bearing a holomorphic Cartan geometry contains a rational curve just when the Cartan geometry is inherited from a holomorphic Cartan geometry on a lower dimensional compact Kähler manifold.
In this work, we begin by showing that a holomorphic foliation with singularities is reduced if and only if its normal sheaf is torsion free. In addition, when the codimension of the singular locus is at least two, it is shown that being reduced is equivalent to the reflexivity of the tangent sheaf. Our main results state on one hand, that the tangent sheaf of a codimension one foliation in P^3 is locally free if and only the singular scheme is a curve, and that it splits if and only if that curve is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay. On the other hand, we discuss when a split foliation in P^3 is …
We prove that if a Calabi--Yau manifold $M$ admits a holomorphic Cartan geometry, then $M$ is covered by a complex torus. This is done by establishing the Bogomolov inequality for semistable sheaves on compact Kähler manifolds. We also classify all holomorphic Cartan geometries on rationally connected complex projective manifolds.
In this paper we study holomorphic vector bundles with singular Hermitian metrics whose curvature are Hermitian matrix currents. We obtain an extension theorem for holomorphic jet sections of nef holomorphic vector bundle on compact Kähler manifolds. Using it we prove that Fano manifolds with strong Griffiths nef tangent bundles are rational homogeneous spaces.
We show that the chow group of $p$-cycles with rational coefficients are isomorphic to the corresponding rational homology groups for smooth complex projective varieties carrying a holomorphic vector field with an isolated zero locus. As applications, we obtain Chow groups and Lawson homology groups with rational coefficients and verify the Friedlander-Mazur conjecture and the Generalized Hodge conjecture for those varieties.
We use Gromov-Witten theory to study rational curves in holomorphic symplectic varieties. We present a numerical criterion for the existence of uniruled divisors swept out by rational curves in the primitive curve class of a very general holomorphic symplectic variety of $K3^{[n]}$ type. We also classify all rational curves in the primitive curve class of the Fano variety of lines in a very general cubic $4$-fold, and prove the irreducibility of the corresponding moduli space. Our proofs rely on Gromov-Witten calculations by the first author, and in the Fano case on a geometric construction of…
We prove some sufficient conditions in order that a root of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial contributes to a difference between certain D-modules generated by rational powers of a holomorphic function; for instance, this holds in the case of isolated singularities with semisimple Milnor monodromies. We then construct an example where a root does not contribute to a difference. This also solves an old open problem about the relation between the Milnor monodromy and the exponential of the residue of the Gauss-Manin connection on the saturation of the Brieskorn lattice. This shows that the structur…
We consider singular holomorphic foliations on compact complex surfaces with invariant rational nodal curve of positive self-intersection. Then, under some assumptions, we list all possible foliations.
We prove that rational and 1-rational singularities of complex spaces are stable under taking quotients by holomorphic actions of reductive and compact Lie groups. This extends a result of Boutot to the analytic category and yields a refinement of his result in the algebraic category. As one of the main technical tools vanishing theorems for cohomology groups with support on fibres of resolutions are proven.
We define local residues of holomorphic 1-forms on an isolated surface singularity that have isolated zeros and prove that a certain residue equals the index of the 1-forms.
We study families of rational curves on irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a sufficiently ample linear system on a holomorphic symplectic variety of $K3^{[n]}$-type to contain a uniruled divisor covered by rational curves of primitive class. In particular, for any fixed $n$, we show that there are only finitely many polarization types of holomorphic symplectic variety of $K3^{[n]}$-type that do not contain such a uniruled divisor. As an application we provide a generalization of a result due to Beauville-Voisin on the Chow group of 0-…
This manuscript is an introduction to the theory of holomorphic foliations on the complex projective plane. Historically the subject has emerged from the theory of ODEs in the complex domain and various attempts to solve Hilbert's 16th Problem, but with the introduction of complex algebraic geometry, foliation theory and dynamical systems, it has now become an interesting subject of its own.
Let X be a complex nonsingular affine algebraic variety, K a holomorphically convex subset of X, and Y a homogeneous variety for some complex linear algebraic group. We prove that a holomorphic map f:K-->Y can be uniformly approximated on K by regular maps K-->Y if and only if f is homotopic to a regular map K-->Y. However, it can happen that a null homotopic holomorphic map K-->Y does not admit uniform approximation on K by regular maps X-->Y. Here, a map g:K-->Y is called holomorphic (resp. regular) if there exist an open (resp. a Zariski open) neighborhood U of K in X and a holomorphic (res…
We consider the generating function (prepotential) for Gromov-Witten invariants of rational elliptic surface. We apply the local mirror principle to calculate the prepotential and prove a certain recursion relation, holomorphic anomaly equation, for genus 0 and 1. We propose the holomorphic anomaly equation for all genera and apply it to determine higher genus Gromov-Witten invariants and also the BPS states on the surface. Generalizing Göttsche's formula for the Hilbert scheme of $g$ points on a surface, we find precise agreement of our results with the proposal recently made by Gopakumar and…
We define rational numbers counting holomorphic disks bounding a complex lagrangian submanifold on a hyperkhaler manifold of real dimension four. We provide a simple a direct proof of Kontsevich-Soibelman Wall Crossing Formula for these rational invariants.
In the definition of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds the condition of being simply connected can be replaced by vanishing irregularity. We discuss finite quotients X of complex tori where the space of reflexive 2-forms is generated by a holomorphic symplectic form, and their Lagrangian fibrations. Neither X nor the base can be smooth unless X is a 2-torus.
We introduce a weak concept of Morita equivalence, in the birational context, for Poisson modules on complex normal Poisson projective varieties. We show that Poisson modules, on projective varieties with mild singularities, are either rationally Morita equivalent to a flat partial holomorphic sheaf, or a sheaf with a meromorphic flat connection or a co-Higgs sheaf. As an application, we study the geometry of rank two meromorphic rank two $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-Poisson modules which can be interpreted as a Poisson analogous to transversally projective structures for codimension one holomorphic foli…
We address the question concerning the birational geometry of the strata of holomorphic and quadratic differentials. We show strata of holomorphic and quadratic differentials to be uniruled in small genus by constructing rational curves via pencils on K3 and del Pezzo surfaces respectively. Restricting to genus $3\leq g\leq6$, we construct projective bundles over a rational varieties that dominate the holomorphic strata with length at most $g-1$, hence showing in addition that these strata are unirational.
Rational curves on Hilbert schemes of points on $K3$ surfaces and generalised Kummer manifolds are constructed by using Brill-Noether theory on nodal curves on the underlying surface. It turns out that all wall divisors can be obtained, up to isometry, as dual divisors to such rational curves. The locus covered by the rational curves is then described, thus exhibiting algebraically coisotropic subvarieties that deform to general small deformations of the manifold. This provides strong evidence for a conjecture by Voisin concerning the Chow ring of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds. …
Let F be a polarized irreducible holomorphic symplectic fourfold, deformation equivalent to the Hilbert scheme parametrizing length-two zero-dimensional subschemes of a K3 surface. The homology group H^2(F,Z) is equipped with an integral symmetric nondegenerate form, the Beauville form. We give precise conjectures for the structure of the cone of effective curves - and by duality - the cone of ample divisors. Formally they are completely analogous to the results known for K3 surfaces, and they are expressed entirely in terms of the integers represented by the Beauville form restricted to Pic(F…
We set up a topological framework for degenerations of symplectic manifolds into singular spaces paying a special attention to the behavior of Lagrangian manifolds and their (holomorphic) membranes. We show that degenerations into singular toric varieties provide a source of exotic Lagrangian tori.
We show that deformations of a surjective morphism onto a Fano manifold of Picard number 1 are unobstructed and rigid modulo the automorphisms of the target, if the variety of minimal rational tangents of the Fano manifold is non-linear or finite. The condition on the variety of minimal rational tangents holds for practically all known examples of Fano manifolds of Picard number 1, except the projective space. When the variety of minimal rational tangents is non-linear, the proof is based on an earlier result of N. Mok and the author on the birationality of the tangent map. When the varieties …
This article describes some complex-analytic aspects of the moduli space of the finite-dimensional complex representations of a finite quiver, which are stable with respect to a fixed rational weight. We construct a natural structure of a complex manifold on this moduli space, and a Kähler metric on the complex manifold. We then define a Hermitian holomorphic line bundle on the moduli space, and show that its curvature is a rational multiple of the Kähler form.
In this paper, we investigate families of singular holomorphic Lie algebroids on complex analytic spaces. We introduce and study a special type of deformation called unfoldings of Lie algebroids, which generalizes the theory of singular holomorphic foliations developed by T. Suwa. We show that a one to one correspondence between transversal unfoldings and holomorphic flat connections on a natural Lie algebroid on the bases exists.
We show that the set of singular holomorphic foliations of the projective spaces with split tangent sheaf and with good singular set is open in the space of holomorphic foliations. As applications we present a generalization of a result by Camacho-Lins Neto about linear pull-back foliations, we give a criterium for the rigidity of $\mathcal L$-foliations of codimension $k \ge 2$ and prove a conjecture by Cerveau-Deserti about the rigidity of a codimension one $\mathcal L$-foliation of $\mathbb P^4$. These results allow us to exhibit some previously unknown irreducible components of the spaces …
We establish the equidistribution of zeros of random holomorphic sections of powers of a semipositive singular Hermitian line bundle, with an estimate of the convergence speed.
We show that the holomorphic Morse inequalities proved by Tian and the author [TZ1, 2] are in effect equalities by refining the analytic arguments in [TZ1, 2].

We investigate singular Hermitian metrics on vector bundles, especially strictly Griffiths positive ones. $L^2$ esitimates and vanishing theorems usually require an assumption that vector bundles are Nakano positive. However there is no general definition of the Nakano positivity in singular settings. In this paper, we show various $L^2$ estimates and vanishing theromes by assuming that the vector bundle is strictly Griffiths positive and the base manifold is projective.
We use orbifold structures to deduce degeneracy statements for holomorphic maps into logarithmic surfaces. We improve former results in the smooth case and generalize them to singular pairs. In particular, we give applications on nodal surfaces and complements of singular plane curves.
In this paper we study the "holomorphic K-theory" of a projective variety, which is defined in terms of the homotopy type of spaces of holomorphic maps from the variety to Grassmannians and loop groups. This theory was introduced by Lawson, Lima-Filho and Michelsohn, and also by Friedlander and Walker, and a related theory was considered by Karoubi. Using the Chern character studied by the authors in a companion paper, we give a rational isomorphism between holomorphic $K$-theory and the "morphic cohomology" defined by Lawson and Friedlander. In doing so, we describe a geometric model for rati…
Let X be a complex analytic space. A short analytic arc is a holomorphic map of the closed unit disc to X such that only the origin is mapped to a singular point. In contrast with the space of formal arcs studied by Nash, the moduli space of short analytic arcs usually has infinitely many connected components. We describe these for surface singularities, in terms of certain conjugacy classes of the fundamental group of the link. For quotient singularities (in any dimension), this gives a concrete realization of the McKay correspondence. Our results also give new connections between a surface c…
Let $G/P$ be a rational homogeneous space (not necessarily irreducible) and $x_0\in G/P$ be the point at which the isotropy group is $P$. The $G$-translates of the orbit $Qx_0$ of a parabolic subgroup $Q\subsetneq G$ such that $P\cap Q$ is parabolic are called $Q$-cycles. We established an extension theorem for local biholomorphisms on $G/P$ that map local pieces of $Q$-cycles into $Q$-cycles. We showed that such maps extend to global biholomorphisms of $G/P$ if $G/P$ is $Q$-cycle-connected, or equivalently, if there does not exist a non-trivial parabolic subgroup containing $P$ and $Q$. Then …
A holomorphic germ Φ: (C^2, 0) \to (C^3, 0), singular only at the origin, induces at the links level an immersion of S^3 into S^5. The regular homotopy type of such immersions are determined by their Smale invariant, defined up to a sign ambiguity. In this paper we fix a sign of the Smale invariant and we show that for immersions induced by holomorphic gems the sign-refined Smale invariant is the negative of the number of cross caps appearing in a generic perturbation of Φ. Using the algebraic method we calculate it for some families of singularities, among others the A-D-E quotient singularit…
An unobstructedness theorem is proved for deformations of compact holomorphic Poisson manifolds and applied to a class of examples. These include certain rational surfaces and Hilbert schemes of points on Poisson surfaces. We study in particular the Hilbert schemes of the projective plane and show that a generic deformation is determined by two parameters -- an elliptic curve and a translation on it.
By using analytic method, we prove that there exist rational curves on compact Hermitian manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. It confirms a question of S.-T. Yau. It is well-known that Mori proved in \cite{Mori79} that every compact complex manifold $N$ with $c_1(N)>0$ contains at least one rational curve. However, as a borderline example, we show that the standard Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ has a Hermitian metric with non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature (in particular, $c_1(S^1\times S^3)\geq 0$), but it contains no rational curve.
We study Gromov-Witten invariants of a rational elliptic surface using holomorphic anomaly equation in [HST1](hep-th/9901151). Formulating invariance under the affine $E_8$ Weyl group symmetry, we determine conjectured invariants, the number of BPS states, from Gromov-Witten invariants. We also connect our holomorphic anomaly equation to that found by Bershadsky,Cecotti,Ooguri and Vafa [BCOV1](hep-th/9302103).
We introduce a model for Hermitian holormorphic Deligne cohomology on a projective algebraic manifold which allows to incorporate singular hermitian structures along a normal crossing divisor. In the case of a projective curve, the cup-product in cohomology is shown to correspond to a generalization of the Deligne pairing to line bundles with "good" hermitian metrics in the sense of Mumford and others. A particular case is that of the tangent bundle of the curve twisted by the negative of the singularity divisor of a hyperbolic metric: its cup square (corrected by the total area) is shown to b…
This paper considers the links between the geometry of the various flag manifolds of loop groups and bundles over families of rational curves. Aa an application, a stability result for the moduli on a rational ruled surface of G-bundles with additional flag structure along a line is proven for any reductive group; this gives the corresponding stability statement for any compact group K for the moduli of K-instantons over the four-sphere, and for the moduli of K-calorons over the three-sphere times the circle. The paper also considers the Hecke transforms on bundles induced by outer automorphis…
In this note we show that if a compact Kahler manifold with trivial canonical bundle is the total space of a holomorphic fibration without singular fibers, then the fibration is a holomorphic fiber bundle. In the algebraic case, the fibration becomes trivial after a finite base change.
