We report on two recent multiloop results in QED: (i) the four-loop corrections to the conversion relations between the QED charge renormalized in the on-shell and MS-bar schemes; (ii) analytical evaluation of a class of asymptotic contributions to the muon anomaly at five-loops.
In this paper we compute the four-loop corrections to the QED photon self-energy Pi(Q^2) in the two limits of q=0 and Q^2->infinity. These results are used to explicitly construct the conversion relations between the QED charge renormalized in on-shell(OS) and MSbar scheme. Using these relations and results of Baikov et al. [1] we construct the momentum dependent part of Pi(Q^2,m,alpha) at large Q^2 at five loops in both MSbar and OS schemes. As a direct consequence we arrive at the full result for the QED beta-function in the OS scheme at five loops. These results are applied, in turn, to ana…
The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is one of the most fundamental observables. It has been measured experimentally with a very high precision and on theory side the contributions from perturbative QED have been calculated up to five-loop level by numerical methods. Contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment from certain diagram classes are also accessible by alternative methods. In this paper we present the evaluation of contributions to the QED corrections due to insertions of the vacuum polarization function at five-loop level.
We obtain a simple relation between massless and massive scattering amplitudes in gauge theories in the limit where all kinematic invariants are large compared to particle masses. We use this relation to derive the two-loop QED corrections to large-angle Bhabha scattering.
Recent developments in the calculation of the NNLO corrections to the Bhabha scattering differential cross section in pure QED are briefly reviewed and discussed.
We compute the on-shell wave function renormalization constant to four-loop order in QCD and present numerical results for all coefficients of the SU$(N_c)$ colour factors. We extract the four-loop HQET anomalous dimension of the heavy quark field and also discuss the application of our result to QED.
We review the four-loop QED corrections to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. The fermionic contributions with closed electron and tau contributions are discussed. Furthermore, we report on a new independent calculation of the universal four-loop contribution and compare with existing results.
We apply the DRA method to the calculation of the four-loop `QED-type' tadpoles. For arbitrary space-time dimensionality D the results have the form of multiple convergent sums. We use these results to obtain the epsilon-expansion of the integrals around D=3 and D=4.
The two-loop massive operator matrix elements for the fermionic local twist--2 operators with external massive fermion lines in Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) are calculated up to the constant terms in the dimensional parameter $ε= D - 4$. We investigate the hypothesis of Ref. \cite{BBN} that the 2--loop QED initial state corrections to $e^+e^-$ annihilation into a virtual neutral gauge boson, except power corrections of $O((m_f^2/s)^k), k \geq 1$, can be represented in terms of these matrix elements and the massless 2-loop Wilson coefficients of the Drell-Yan process.
The running of the effective electromagnetic coupling is for many electroweak observables the dominant correction. It plays an important role for deriving constraints on the Standard Model in the context of electroweak precision measurements. We compute the four-loop QED corrections to the running of the effective electromagnetic coupling and perform a numerical evaluation of the different gauge invariant subsets.
We present an analytic calculation of electron and tau O(alpha^3) loop effects on the muon anomalous magnetic moment. Computation of such three-loop diagrams with three mass scales is possible using asymptotic and eikonal expansions. An evaluation of a new type of eikonal integrals is presented in some detail.
In this paper we calculate at high-precision the Laurent expansions in e=(4-D)/2 of the 17 master integrals which appeared in the analytical calculation of 3-loop QED contribution to the electron g-2, using difference and differential equations. The coefficients of the expansions so obtained are in perfect agreement with all the analytical expressions already known. The values of coefficients not previously known will be used in the high-precision calculation of the 4-loop QED contribution to the electron g-2.
We present analytic results for one of two types of planar QED two-loop integrals for $μe$ scattering including finite lepton masses. No approximations are made, such that the results are valid not only in the limit of a small electron mass. The results are expressed in terms of multiple polylogarithms with algebraic function arguments in a representation which allows for fast numerical evaluation in the physical phase-space.
We present a set of scalar master integrals (MIs) needed for a complete treatment of massive two-loop corrections to Bhabha scattering in QED, including integrals with arbitrary fermionic loops. The status of analytical solutions for the MIs is reviewed and examples of some methods to solve MIs analytically are worked out in more detail. Analytical results for the pole terms in epsilon of so far unknown box MIs with five internal lines are given.
In this paper we examine Phi-derivable approximations in QED. General theorems tell us that the gauge dependence of the n-loop Phi-derivable approximation shows up at order g^(2n) where g is the coupling constant. We consider the gauge dependence of the two-loop Phi-derivable approximation to the Debye mass and show that it is of order e^4 as expected. We solve the three-loop Phi-derivable approximation in QED by expanding sum-integrals in powers of e^2 and m/T, where m is the Debye mass which satisfies a variational gap equation. The results for the pressure and the Debye mass are accurate to…
We evaluate the on shell form factors of the electron for arbitrary momentum transfer and finite electron mass, at two loops in QED, by integrating the corresponding dispersion relations, which involve the imaginary parts known since a long time. The infrared divergences are parameterized in terms of a fictitious small photon mass. The result is expressed in terms of Harmonic Polylogarithms of maximum weight 4. The expansions for small and large momentum transfer are also given
We use an n-dimensional projection method to calculate helicity amplitudes for photon-photon scattering up to the two-loop level, for massless particles inside the loop. We confirm the recent standard model results found by Bern et al using another calculational method. We further apply the method to N=1 and N=2 supersymmetric QED. As predicted by the supersymmetric Ward identity, two of the independent amplitudes vanish. The remaining amplitude simplifies as the number of supersymmetries increases. For N=2 SUSY QED, only contributions of weight 4 remain.
The 4-loop QED mass and wave function renormalization constants $Z_2$ and $Z_m$ have been evaluated in the on-shell subtraction scheme with 1100 digits of precision. We also worked out the coefficients of the five color structures of the QCD renormalization constants $Z_2^{OS}$ and $Z_m^{OS}$ which can obtained from QED-like diagrams. The results agree with lower precision results available in the literature. Analytical fits were also obtained for all these quantities.
Three--loop contributions to massive QED vacuum polarization are evaluated by a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. The first three Taylor coefficients, at small $q^2$, are obtained analytically, using $d$\/--dimensional recurrence relations. Combining these with analytical input at threshold, and at large $q^2$, an accurate Padé approximation is obtained, for all $q^2$. Inserting this in the one--loop diagram for the muon anomalous magnetic moment, we find reasonable agreement with four--loop, single--electron--loop, muon--anomaly contributions, recently re--evaluated by Kinos…
We calculate three-loop photon spectral density in QED with $N$ different species of electrons. The obtained results were expressed in terms of iterated integrals, which are either reduce to Goncharov's polylogarithms or can be written in terms of one-fold integrals of harmonic polylogarithms and complete elliptic integrals. In addition we provide threshold and high-energy asymptotics of the calculated spectral density. It is shown, that the use of the obtained spectral density correctly reproduces separately calculated moments of corresponding photon polarization operator.
We compute the two-loop QED corrections to the Altarelli-Parisi (AP) splitting functions by using a deconstructive algorithmic Abelianization of the well-known NLO QCD corrections. We present explicit results for the full set of splitting kernels in a basis that includes the leptonic distribution functions that, starting from this order in the QED coupling, couple to the partonic densities. Finally, we perform a phenomenological analysis of the impact of these corrections in the splitting functions.
Based on the hard-thermal-loop resummed improved ladder Dyson-Schwinger quation for the fermion mass function, we study how we can get the gauge invariant solution in the sense it satisfies the Ward identity. Properties of the ``gauge-invariant'' solutions are discussed.
We present explicit closed-form expressions for the two-loop Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangians in a constant self-dual field, for both spinor and scalar QED. The simplicity of these representations allows us to examine in detail the asymptotic properties of these Lagrangians, and to construct their imaginary part using Borel dispersion relations. In particular, for this self-dual case we obtain the explicit form of the Lebedev-Ritus functions appearing in the Schwinger representation of the imaginary part at two loops. Using the connection between self-duality and helicity, we also obtain explicit …
We compute the free energy density for gauge theories, with fermions, at high temperature and zero chemical potential. Specifically, we analytically compute the free energy through $O(g^4)$, which requires the evaluation of three-loop diagrams. This computation extends our previous result for pure gauge QCD.
The derivative expansion of the one-loop effective Lagrangian in QED$_4$ is considered. The first term in such an expansion is the famous Schwinger result for a constant electromagnetic field. In this paper we give an explicit expression for the next term containing two derivatives of the field strength $F_{μν}$. The results are presented for both fermion and scalar electrodynamics. Some possible applications of an inhomogeneous external field are pointed out.
We describe the calculation of the two--loop massive operator matrix elements with massive external fermions in QED. We investigate the factorization of the $O(α^2)$ initial state corrections to $e^+e^-$ annihilation into a virtual boson for large cms energies $s \gg m_e^2$ into massive operator matrix elements and the massless Wilson coefficients of the Drell-Yan process adapting the color coefficients to the case of QED, as proposed by Berends et. al. in Ref. [1]. Our calculations show explicitly that the representation proposed in Ref. [1] works at one-loop order and up to terms linear in $…
We present the closed analytic expression of the form factors of the two-loop QED vertex amplitude for on-shell electrons of finite mass $m$ and arbitrary momentum transfer $S=-Q^2$. The calculation is carried out within the continuous $D$-dimensional regularization scheme, with a single continuous parameter $D$, the dimension of the space-time, which regularizes at the same time UltraViolet (UV) and InfraRed (IR) divergences. The results are expressed in terms of 1-dimensional harmonic polylogarithms of maximum weight 4.
We present the three loop contribution (order $e^4$) to the pressure of massless quantum electrodynamics at nonzero temperature. The calculation is performed within the imaginary time formalism. Dimensional regularization is used to handle the usual, intermediate stage, ultraviolet and infrared singularities, and also to prevent overcounting of diagrams during resummation.
The weak-coupling expansion for thermodynamic quantities in thermal field theories is poorly convergent unless the coupling constant is tiny. We discuss the calculation of the free energy for a hot gas of electrons and photons to three-loop order using hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt). We show that the hard-thermal-loop perturbation reorganization improves the convergence of the successive approximations to the QED free energy at large coupling, e ~ 2. The reorganization is gauge invariant by construction, and due to the cancellations among various contributions, we obtain a compl…
A numerical technique for calculating effective actions of electromagnetic backgrounds is proposed, which is based on the string-inspired worldline formalism. As examples, we consider scalar electrodynamics in three and four dimensions to one-loop order. Beyond the constant-magnetic-field case, we analyze a step-function-like magnetic field exhibiting a nonlocal and nonperturbative phenomenon: ``magnetic-field diffusion''. Finally, generalizations to fermionic loops and systems at finite temperature are discussed.
We discuss the epsilon-method as used in various recent QED bound-state calculations by considering mathematical model examples. Recently obtained results for higher-order self-energy binding corrections at the two-loop level are reviewed. Problems associated with the interpretation of squared decay rates as radiative bound-state energy level shifts are discussed. We briefly expand on the relation of squared decay rates to nonresonant and radiative corrections to the Lorentzian line shape, including their dependence on the experimental process under study.
We evaluate the analytic expression for the one-loop fermion-boson vertex in massless QED3 in an arbitrary covariant gauge. The result is written in terms of elementary functions of its momenta. The vertex is decomposed into a longitudinal part, that is fully responsible for ensuring the Ward and Ward-Takahashi identities are satisfied, and a transverse part. Following Ball and Chiu and Kızılersü {\it et. al.}, the transverse part is written in its most general form as a function of 4 independent vectors. We calculate the coefficients of each of these vectors. We also check the transversality …
The contribution of exclusive radiative tail to the cross section of semi-inclusive hadron leptoproduction has been calculated exactly for the first time. Although the experience of inclusive data analyses suggests us that the contribution of radiative tail from the elastic peak is of particular importance, similar effects in the semi-inclusive process were only recently estimated in the peaking approximation. The explicit expressions for the lepton part of the lowest order QED contribution of exclusive radiative tail to the five-fold differential cross section are obtained and discussed. Nume…
We describe a calculation of the on-shell renormalization factors in QCD and QED at the three loop level. Explicit results for the fermion mass renormalization factor Zm and the on-shell fermion wave function renormalization constant Z2 are given. We find that at O(alpha_s^3) the wave function renormalization constant Z2 in QCD becomes gauge dependent also in the on-shell scheme, thereby disproving the ``gauge-independence'' conjecture based on an earlier two-loop result. As a byproduct, we derive an O(alpha_s^3) contribution to the anomalous dimension of the heavy quark field in HQET.
This paper presents a new method of numerical computation of the QED contributions to the electron anomalous magnetic moment which arises from Feynman graphs containing electron and photon lines and not containing electron loops. The method consists of two parts. The first part is the forest-like subtraction formula that removes all ultraviolet and infrared divergences in each Feynman graph point-by-point in Feynman-parametric space. The second part is the importance sampling Monte-Carlo algorithm with the probability density function that is constructed for each Feynman graph individually. Th…
The bulk of large radiative corrections to any process can be obtained by promoting coupling constants to be running ones and by including QED radiation at the leading logarithmic level via structure functions evoluted at some scale. The problem of fixing the proper scale in running coupling constants and in structure functions for non-annihilation processes is briefly addressed and the general solution is analyzed.
We briefly review the status of the calculation of next-to-next-to-leading order corrections to large angle Bhabha scattering in pure QED. In particular, we focus on the analytic calculation of the two-loop virtual corrections involving a heavy-flavor fermion loop, which was recently completed. We conclude by assessing the numerical impact of these corrections on the Bhabha scattering cross section at colliders operating at a center of mass energy of 1 GeV and at the future ILC.
The 4-loop $C_F^3 T_F n_l$ and 5-loop $C_F^4 T_F n_l$ terms in the HQET field anomalous dimension $γ_h$ are calculated analytically (the 4-loop one agrees with the recent numerical result [arXiv:1801.08292]). The 4-loop $C_F^3 T_F n_l$ and 5-loop $C_F^4 T_F n_l$ terms in the cusp anomalous dimension $Γ(φ)$ are calculated analytically, exactly in $φ$ (the $φ\to\infty$ asymptotics of the 4-loop one agrees with the recent numerical result [arXiv:1707.08315]). Combining these results with the recent 4-loop $d_{FF} n_l$ contributions to $γ_h$ and to the small-$φ$ expansion of $Γ(φ)$ up to $φ^4$ [ar…
We report on two recent results based on the evaluation of five-loop massless propagators in QCD and QED: (i) corrections of order $α_s^4$ to the absorptive part of the polarization function in QCD with $n_f=3$;(ii) the five-loop contribution to the $β$ function of quenched QED.
I have evaluated up to 1100 digits of precision the contribution of the 891 4-loop Feynman diagrams contributing to the electron $g$-$2$ in QED. The total mass-independent 4-loop contribution is $ a_e = -1.912245764926445574152647167439830054060873390658725345{\ldots} \left(\fracαπ\right)^4$. I have fit a semi-analytical expression to the numerical value. The expression contains harmonic polylogarithms of argument $e^{\frac{iπ}{3}}$, $e^{\frac{2iπ}{3}}$, $e^{\frac{iπ}{2}}$, one-dimensional integrals of products of complete elliptic integrals and six finite parts of master integrals, evaluated …
A new subtraction procedure for removal both ultraviolet and infrared divergences in Feynman integrals is proposed. This method is developed for computation of QED corrections to the electron anomalous magnetic moment. The procedure is formulated in the form of a forest formula with linear operators that are applied to Feynman amplitudes of UV-divergent subgraphs. The contribution of each Feynman graph that contains propagators of electrons and photons is represented as a finite Feynman-parametric integral. Application of the developed method to the calculation of 2-loop and 3-loop contributio…
We present the NNLO QCD virtual corrections for qurak-antiquark -> gluon photon, quark-antiquark -> photon photon and the NNLO QED virtual corrections for electron positron -> photon photon and all processes related by crossing symmetry. We perform an explicit evaluation of the two-loop diagrams in conventional dimensional regularisation, and our results are renormalised in the MSbar scheme. The infrared pole structure of the amplitudes is in agreement with the prediction of Catani's general formalism for the singularities of two-loop amplitudes, while expressions for the finite remainder are …
The loop-tree duality (LTD) theorem establishes that loop contributions to scattering amplitudes can be computed through dual integrals, which are build from single cuts of the virtual diagrams. In order to build a complete LTD representation of a cross section and to achieve a local cancellation of singularities, it is crucial to include the renormalized self-energy corrections in an unintegrated form. In this document, we calculate the scalar functions related to the self-energy corrections in QED and QCD in the LTD formalism and extract explicitly their UV behaviour.
We calculate the two-loop virtual, UV renormalized corrections at order α^4 (N_F=1) in QED to the Bhabha scattering differential cross section, for arbitrary values of the squared c.m. energy s and momentum transfer t, and on-shell electrons and positrons of finite mass m. The calculation is carried out within the dimensional regularization scheme; the remaining IR divergences appear as polar singularities in (D-4). The result is presented in terms of 1- and 2-dimensional harmonic polylogarithms, of maximum weight 3.
The lectures are a practical introduction to perturbative calculations in QED and QCD. I discuss methods of calculation of one- and two-loop diagrams in dimensional regularization, MSbar and on-shell renormalization schemes, decoupling of heavy-particle loops.
This paper is devoted to the two-loop QED radiative corrections to the decay pi0 -> e+ e-. We compute the virtual corrections without using any approximation and we take into account all the relevant graphs with the inclusion of those omitted in the previous approximative calculations. The bremsstrahlung is then treated within the soft photon approximation. We concentrate on the technical aspects of the calculation and discuss in detail the UV renormalization and the treatment of IR divergences within the dimensional regularization. As a result we obtain the O(alpha^3 p^2) contribution in clos…
Assuming high temperature and taking subleading temperature dependence into account, gauge dependence of one-loop electron dispersion relation is investigated in massless QED at zero chemical potential. The analysis is carried out using a general linear covariant gauge. The equation governing the gauge dependence of the dispersion relation is obtained and used to prove that the dispersion relation is gauge independent in the limiting case of momenta much larger than $eT$. It is also shown that the effective mass is not influenced by the leading temperature dependence of the gauge dependent par…
We compute the pressure of hot quantum electrodynamics from the two-loop truncation of the 2PI effective action. Since the 2PI resummation guarantees gauge-fixing independence only up to the order of the truncation, our result for the pressure presents a gauge dependent contribution of O(e^4). We numerically characterize the credibility of this gauge-dependent calculation and find that the uncertainty due to gauge parameter dependence is under control for xi<1. Our calculation also suggests that the choice of Landau gauge may minimize gauge-dependent effects.
The QED trace anomaly is calculated at one-loop level based on the loop regularization method which is realized in 4-dimensional spacetime and preserves gauge symmetry and Poincare symmetry in spite of the introduction of two mass scales, namely the ultraviolet (UV) cut-off $M_c$ and infrared (IR) cut-off $μ_s$. It is shown that the dilation Ward identity which relates the three-point diagrams with the vacuum polarization diagrams gets the standard form of trace anomaly through quantum corrections in taking the consistent limit $M_c\to \infty$ and $μ_s = 0$ which recovers the original integral…
We have evaluated with 1100 digits of precision the contribution of all the 891 mass-independent four-loop Feynman diagrams contributing to the slope of the Dirac form factor in QED. The total 4-loop contribution is $ m^2 F_1^{(4)'}(0) = 0.886545673946443145836821730610315359390424032660064745... \left(\fracαπ\right)^4$. We have fit a semi-analytical expression to the numerical value. The expression contains harmonic polylogarithms of argument $e^{\frac{iπ}{3}}$, $e^{\frac{2iπ}{3}}$, $e^{\frac{iπ}{2}}$, one-dimensional integrals of products of complete elliptic integrals and six finite parts o…
We present two novel results about the universal structure of radiative QED amplitudes in the soft and in the collinear limit. On the one hand, we extend the well-known Low-Burnett-Kroll theorem to the one-loop level and give the explicit relation between the radiative and non-radiative amplitude at subleading power in the soft limit. On the other hand, we consider a factorisation formula at leading power in the limit where the emitted photon becomes collinear to a light fermion and provide the corresponding one-loop splitting function. In addition to being interesting in their own right these…
We discuss reorganizing finite temperature perturbation theory using hard-thermal-loop (HTL) perturbation theory in order to improve the convergence of successive perturbative approximations to the free energy of a gauge theory. We briefly review the history of the technique and present new results for the three-loop HTL-improved approximation for the free energy of QED. We show that the hard-thermal-loop perturbation reorganization improves the convergence of the successive approximations to the QED free energy at intermediate coupling, e ~ 2. The reorganization is gauge invariant by construc…
The contributions to the $g-2$ of the muon from some eighth-order (four-loop) graphs containing one-loop and two-loop vacuum polarization insertions have been evaluated analytically in QED perturbation theory, expanding the results in the ratio of the electron to muon mass ${(m_e / m_μ)}$. The results agree with the numerical evaluations and the asymptotic analytical results already existing in the literature.
Preliminary numerical results of calculating the 5-loop QED contributions to the electron (and muon) anomalous magnetic moment are presented. The results include the total contribution of the 5-loop Feynman diagrams without lepton loops and the contributions of nine gauge-invariant classes that form that set. A discrepancy with known results is revealed. The contributions of the gauge-invariant classes are presented for the first time. The method of the computation is briefly described (with the corresponding references). The calculation is based on the following elements: 1) a subtraction pro…
The one loop vertex in QED is calculated in arbitrary covariant gauges as an analytic function of its momenta. The vertex is decomposed into a longitudinal part, that is fully responsible for ensuring the Ward and Ward-Takahashi identities are satisfied, and a transverse part. The transverse part is decomposed into 8 independent components each being separately free of kinematic singularities in $\bf any$ covariant gauge in a basis that modifies that proposed by Ball and Chiu. Analytic expressions for all 11 components of the ${O(α)}$ vertex are given explicitly in terms of elementary function…
In this paper we briefly outline the quadrature method for estimating uncertainties in a function of several variables and apply it to estimate the numerical uncertainties in QCD-QED rescaling factors. We employ here the one-loop order in QED and three-loop order in QCD evolution equations of fermion mass renormalization. Our present calculations are found to be new and also reliable compared to the earlier values employed by various authors.
