We describe the calculation of the two--loop massive operator matrix elements with massive external fermions in QED. We investigate the factorization of the $O(α^2)$ initial state corrections to $e^+e^-$ annihilation into a virtual boson for large cms energies $s \gg m_e^2$ into massive operator matrix elements and the massless Wilson coefficients of the Drell-Yan process adapting the color coefficients to the case of QED, as proposed by Berends et. al. in Ref. [1]. Our calculations show explicitly that the representation proposed in Ref. [1] works at one-loop order and up to terms linear in $\ln(s/m^2_e)$ at two-loop order. However, the two-loop constant part contains a few structural terms, which have not been obtained in previous direct calculations.
To have an analytic understanding of the higher-twist structure functions, we calculate twist four longitudinal structure function for a positronium-like bound state in weak coupling light-front QED. We find that in the weakly coupled system, the fermionic part of $F_L$ is related to the kinetic energy of the fermions and not to the interaction. We verify a previously proposed sum rule in this limit, which in this case reduces to a relation connecting the kinetic and the potential energies to the binding energy of positronium. Using the analytic form of the wave function of positronium in this…
A possible collective fermionic excitation in the ultrasoft energy-momentum region is examined in Yukawa model with scalar coupling and quantum electrodynamics (QED) with g being coupling constant at extremely high temperature T where the fermion mass is negligible. We analytically sum up the ladder diagrams for the vertex correction in the leading order in QED, which is not necessary in the Yukawa model, and find that the fermion pole exists at ω= \pm p/3-iζwith ultrasoft momentum p both for the Yukawa model and QED; ζis the sum of the damping rates of fermion and boson with hard momenta. We …
We describe the calculation of the two--loop massive operator matrix elements for massive external fermions. These matrix elements are needed for the calculation of the $O(α^2)$ initial state radiative corrections to $e^+e^-$ annihilation into a neutral virtual gauge boson, based on the renormalization group technique.
We discuss the fermionic excitation spectra of the dense QCD and QED plasma at zero temperature, and analyze the stability of the normal (perturbative) ground state. The standard re-summed perturbation theory breaks down because the infrared (IR) divergences show up in the spectra near the Fermi surface. We employ the effective field theory approach and the renormalization group to investigate the dynamics near the Fermi surface. Our results indicate that the dense QCD and QED plasma are non-Fermi-liquids.
It has been shown that QED in (1+4)-dimensional space-time, with the fifth dimension compactified on a circle, leads to CP violation (CPV). Depending on fermionic boundary conditions, CPV may be either explicit (through the Scherk--Schwarz mechanism), or spontaneous (via the Hosotani mechanism). The fifth component of the gauge field acquires (at the one-loop level) a non-zero vacuum expectation value. In the presence of two fermionic fields, this leads to spontaneous CPV in the case of CP-symmetric boundary conditions. Phenomenological consequences are illustrated by a calculation of the elec…
Differential cross section of processes with high energy $p(\bar p)p$ collisions in frames of QED: creation of scalar, pseudoscalar and lepton pair - are considered in Weizsäcker - Williams approximation. In frames of QCD processes with conversion of initial proton (antiproton) to fermionic jets accompanied with one gluon jet as well as the state of two gluons and quark-antiquark pair (with out rapidity gap) are considered in frames of effective Reggion action of theory of Lipatov. Process of creation of a Higgs boson accompanied with two fermionic jets is considered. The azimuthal correlation…
We review the four-loop QED corrections to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. The fermionic contributions with closed electron and tau contributions are discussed. Furthermore, we report on a new independent calculation of the universal four-loop contribution and compare with existing results.
We present a set of scalar master integrals (MIs) needed for a complete treatment of massive two-loop corrections to Bhabha scattering in QED, including integrals with arbitrary fermionic loops. The status of analytical solutions for the MIs is reviewed and examples of some methods to solve MIs analytically are worked out in more detail. Analytical results for the pole terms in epsilon of so far unknown box MIs with five internal lines are given.
The two-loop massive operator matrix elements for the fermionic local twist--2 operators with external massive fermion lines in Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) are calculated up to the constant terms in the dimensional parameter $ε= D - 4$. We investigate the hypothesis of Ref. \cite{BBN} that the 2--loop QED initial state corrections to $e^+e^-$ annihilation into a virtual neutral gauge boson, except power corrections of $O((m_f^2/s)^k), k \geq 1$, can be represented in terms of these matrix elements and the massless 2-loop Wilson coefficients of the Drell-Yan process.
The quantum Dirac-like equation and the QED vertex operator for a composite particle are suggested. The vertex operator and the fermionic propagator are connected by the QED Ward identity. It is shown that all of the Feynman QED-integrals for a three-component particle are finite with some suggestion about large momentum dependence of the vertex operator. This dependence is in agreement with the component counting rules.
The role of local higher-twist ($τ> 3$) spin-1/2 fermionic operators of the strongly coupled ${\cal {N}}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on the symmetric and antisymmetric deep inelastic scattering (DIS) structure functions is investigated. The calculations are carried out in terms of the duality between ${\cal {N}}=4$ SYM theory and type IIB supergravity on AdS$_5 \times S^5$. Particularly, we explicitly obtain the structure functions for single-trace spin-1/2 fermionic operators in the 20$^*$ and 60$^*$ irreducible representations of $SU(4)_R$, corresponding to twists 4 and 5, respective…
We consider the four-dimensional quantum electrodynamics extended with Myers-Pospelov Lorentz-violating dimension-5 operators to investigate 4D-2D projection. In projecting out the 4D theory down to a 2D theory we get analogs of these operators. Namely, we obtain a new two-dimensional theory with corresponding scalar and fermionic 2D Myers-Pospelov Lorentz-violating dimension-3 operators. New defect structures can also be found from this new projected out 2D scalar sector. Furthermore, we also show that this 2D scalar sector can be also radiatively induced through the new 2D fermionic sector.
A numerical technique for calculating effective actions of electromagnetic backgrounds is proposed, which is based on the string-inspired worldline formalism. As examples, we consider scalar electrodynamics in three and four dimensions to one-loop order. Beyond the constant-magnetic-field case, we analyze a step-function-like magnetic field exhibiting a nonlocal and nonperturbative phenomenon: ``magnetic-field diffusion''. Finally, generalizations to fermionic loops and systems at finite temperature are discussed.
We compute the contribution to the anomalous dimension of the twist-2 operators in N=4 SYM theory, which is proportional to the number of fermion loops inside Feynman diagrams or, formally, to the number of fermions. The result was obtained by the method based on the calculation of critical indices at the critical point by analogy with previous similar computations in scalar theories and in QCD. The obtained result is much simpler with compare to analogous results in QCD and almost satisfies the maximal transcedentality principle. A possible relation between the obtained result and integrabili…
We are studying scale properties of twist-2 conformal operators in supersymmetric Wess-Zumino model. In particular, we are interested in a construction of multiplicatively renormalized conformal operators. We show, that in order to find multiplicatively renormalized operators in this model, it is sufficient to find multiplicatively renormalized operators only for one member of operator supermultiplet. We found a closed analytical solution for fermionic conformal operator, which together with supersymmetry transformations could be used to find remained multiplicatively renormalized bosonic oper…
We employ an effective Lagrangian approach to derive the leading-logarithm two-loop electroweak contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, a_mu. We show that these corrections can be obtained using known results on the anomalous dimensions of composite operators. We confirm the result of Czarnecki et al. for the bosonic part and present the complete sin^2 θ_W dependence of the fermionic contribution. The approach is then used to compute the leading-logarithm three-loop electroweak contribution to a_mu. Finally we derive, in a fairly model-independent way, the QED improvement of new-p…
Schwinger pair creation in a purely time-dependent electric field can be reduced to an effective quantum mechanical problem using a variety of formalisms. Here we develop an approach based on the Gelfand-Dikii equation for scalar QED, and on a generalization of that equation for spinor QED. We discuss a number of solvable special cases from this point of view. In previous work, two of the authors had shown for the scalar case how to use the well-known solitonic solutions of the KdV equation to construct Pöschl-Teller like electric fields that do not pair create at some fixed but arbitrary mome…
We discuss the QED-generalized leading-twist light-cone distribution amplitudes of heavy mesons, that appear in QCD$\times$QED factorization theorems for exclusive two-body $B$ decays. In the presence of electrically charged particles, these functions should be more appropriately regarded as soft functions for heavy-meson decays into two back-to-back particles. In this paper, we derive the one-loop anomalous dimension of these soft functions and study their behaviour under renormalization-scale evolution, obtaining an exact solution in Laplace space. In addition, we provide numerical solutions…
We summarize our results for the impact of anisotropic fermionic velocities in (2+1)-dimensional QED on the critical number of fermion flavors, N^c_f, and dynamical mass generation. We apply different approximation schemes for the gauge boson vacuum polarization and the fermion-boson vertex to analyze the according Dyson-Schwinger equations in a finite volume. Our results point towards large variations of N^c_f away from the isotropic point in agreement with other approaches.
In order to treat loops in the Lorentz-violating QED model, we present a derivation of the QED axial anomaly that specifically highlights the infrared origin of the effect. This is done using dimensional regularization while treating $γ_5$ as a spectator. This enables us to revisit aspects in the fermionic sector of Lorentz-violating QED which have analogous structure to the axial anomaly. In particular, it is shown that both the Chern-Simons and photon mass operators are not induced in the one loop effective action. At lowest order in the Lorentz-violating parameter, we can define a non-relat…
We solve the Schwinger-Dyson equations for (2+1)-dimensional QED in the presence of a strong external magnetic field. The calculation is done at finite temperature and the fermionic self energy is not supposed to be momentum-independent, which is the usual simplification in such calculations. The phase diagram in the temperature-magnetic field plane is determined. For intermediate magnetic fields the critical temperature turns out to have a square root dependence on the magnetic field, but for very strong magnetic fields it approaches a B-independent limiting value.
The leading-order electromagnetic and strong isospin-breaking corrections to the ratio of $K_{μ2}$ and $π_{μ2}$ decay rates are evaluated for the first time on the lattice, following a method recently proposed. The lattice results are obtained using the gauge ensembles produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ dynamical quarks. Systematics effects are evaluated and the impact of the quenched QED approximation is estimated. Our result for the correction to the tree-level $K_{μ2} / π_{μ2}$ decay ratio is $-1.22\,(16) \%$ to be compared to the estimate $-1.12\,(21…
