A unified treatment is given of low-weight modular forms on Γ_0(N), N=2,3,4, that have Eisenstein series representations. For each N, certain weight-1 forms are shown to satisfy a coupled system of nonlinear differential equations, which yields a single nonlinear third-order equation, called a generalized Chazy equation. As byproducts, a table of divisor function and theta identities is generated by means of q-expansions, and a transformation law under Γ_0(4) for the second complete elliptic integral is derived. More generally, it is shown how Picard-Fuchs equations of triangle subgroups of PSL(2,R) which are hypergeometric equations, yield systems of nonlinear equations for weight-1 forms, and generalized Chazy equations. Each triangle group commensurable with Γ(1) is treated.
The theory of quaternionic modular forms has been studied for decades as an example of the modular forms of many variables. The purpose of this study is to provide some congruence relations satisfied by such quaternionic modular forms.
We study differential equations satisfied by modular forms associated to $Γ_1\timesΓ_2$, where $Γ_i (i=1,2)$ are genus zero subgroups of $SL_2(\mathbf R)$ commensurable with $SL_2(\mathbf Z)$, e.g., $Γ_0(N)$ or $Γ_0(N)^*$. In some examples, these differential equations are realized as the Picard--Fuch differential equations of families of K3 surfaces with large Picard numbers, e.g., $19, 18, 17, 16$. Our method rediscovers some of the Lian--Yau examples of ``modular relations'' involving power series solutions to the second and the third order differential equations of Fuchsian type in [14, 15…
We compute the divisor of the modular equation on the modular curve $Γ_0(N) \backslash \mathbb H^*$ and then find recurrence relations satisfied by the modular traces of the Hauptmodul for any congruence subgroup $Γ_0(N)$ of genus zero. We also introduce the notions and properties of $Γ$-equivalence and $Γ$-reduced forms about binary quadratic forms. Using these, we can explicitly compute the recurrence relations for $N = 2, 3, 4, 5$.
Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer congruences are special congruence recursions satisfied by coefficients of noncongruence modular forms. These are in some sense $p$-adic analogues of Hecke recursion satisfied by classic Hecke eigenforms. They actually appeared in different context and sometimes can be obtained using the theory of formal groups. In this survey paper, we introduce the Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer congruences, and discuss some recent progress on this topic.
Recently, Chan, Cooper and Sica conjectured two congruences for coefficients of classical 2F1 hypergeometric series which also arise from power series expansions of modular forms in terms of modular functions. We prove these two congruences using combinatorial properties of the coefficients.
We describe the $p$-divisibility transposition for the Fourier coefficients of Siegel modular forms. This provides a supplement to the result by Wilton for $p$-divisibility satisfied by the Ramanujan $τ$-function.
This paper studies modular forms of rank four and level one. There are two possiblities for the isomorphism type of the space of modular forms that can arise from an irreducible representation of the modular group of rank four, and we describe when each case occurs for general choices of exponents for the T -matrix. In the remaining sections we describe how to write down corresponding differential equations satisfied by minimal weight forms, and how to use these minimal weight forms to describe the entire graded module of holomorphic modular forms. Unfortunately the differential equations that…
We study the double shuffle relations satisfied by the double zeta values of level 2, and introduce the double Eisenstein series of level 2 which satisfy the double shuffle relations. We connect the double Eisenstein series to modular forms of level 2.
We obtain Poisson equations satisfied by elliptic modular graph functions with four links. Analysis of these equations leads to a non--trivial algebraic relation between the various graphs.
In this paper, we provide an explicit construction of weight $0$ meromorphic modular forms. Following work of Petersson, we build these via Poincaré series. There are two main aspects of our investigation which differ from his approach. Firstly, the naive definition of the Poincaré series diverges and one must analytically continue via Hecke's trick. Hecke's trick is further complicated in our situation by the fact that the Fourier expansion does not converge everywhere due to singularities in the upper half-plane so it cannot solely be used to analytically continue the functions. To explain t…
We survey the theory of vector-valued modular forms and their connections with modular differential equations and Fuchsian equations over the three-punctured sphere. We present a number of numerical examples showing how the theory in dimensions 2 and 3 leads naturally to close connections between modular forms and hypergeometric series.
In this article, we explicitly construct a canonical basis for the space of certain weakly holomorphic Drinfeld modular forms for $Γ_0(T)$ (resp., for $Γ_0^+(T)$) and compute the generating function satisfied by the basis elements. We also give an explicit expression for the action of the $Θ$-operator, which depends on the divisor of meromorphic Drinfeld modular forms.
In the classical setting, the modular equation of level $N$ for the modular curve $X_0(1)$ is the polynomial relation satisfied by $j(τ)$ and $j(Nτ)$, where $j(τ)$ is the standard elliptic $j$-function. In this paper, we will describe a method to compute modular equations in the setting of Shimura curves. The main ingredient is the explicit method for computing Hecke operators on the spaces of modular forms on Shimura curves developed in [13].
Modular and quasimodular solutions of specific second order differential equation in the upper-half plane which originates from a study of supersingular j-invariants are given explicitly. A characterization of the differential equation is also discussed.
Let $Γ$ be the Fuchsian group of the first kind. For an even integer $m\ge 4$, we study $m/2$-holomorphic differentials in terms of space of (holomorphic) cuspidal modular forms $S_m(Γ)$. We also give in depth study of Wronskians of cuspidal modular forms and their divisors.
A description is given of all primitive differential series mod p of order 1 which are eigenvectors of all the Hecke operators and which are differential Fourier expansions of differential modular forms of arbitrary order and given weight; this set of differential series is shown to be in a natural one-to-one correspondence with the set of series mod p (of order 0) which are eigenvectors of all the Hecke operators and which are Fourier expansions of (classical) modular forms of appropriate weight.
In this article, we construct differential modular forms for compact Shimura curves over totally real fields bigger than rational of non-zero integral weights that is not classical (of order zero) generalizing the construction of Buium [8].
This paper uses previous results of the authors on vector-valued modular forms to study certain non-congruence modular forms. We prove that these forms have unbounded denominators, and in certain cases we verify congruences of Atkin--Swinnerton-Dyer type satisfied by the Fourier coefficients of these forms. Our results rest on group-theoretic facts about the modular group, a detailed study of its imprimitive three-dimensional representations, and the theory of their associated vector-valued modular forms. For the proof of the congruences we also make essential use of a result of Katz.
We study quasimodular forms of depth $\leq4$ and determine under which conditions they occur as solutions of modular differential equations. Furthermore, we study which modular differential equations have quasimodular solutions. We use these results to investigate extremal quasimodular forms as introduced by M. Kaneko and M. Koike further. Especially, we prove a conjecture stated by these authors concerning the divisors of the denominators occurring in their Fourier expansion.
Motivated by the relationship of classical modular functions and Picard--Fuchs linear differential equations of order 2 and 3, we present an analogous concept for equations of order 4 and 5.
Many authors have investigated the congruence relations amongst the coefficients of power series expansions of modular forms $f$ in modular functions $t$. In a recent paper, R. Osburn and B. Sahu examine several power series expansions and prove that the coefficients exhibit congruence relations similar to the congruences satisfied by the Apéry numbers associated with the irrationality of $ζ(3)$. We show that many of the examples of Osburn and Sahu are members of infinite families.
We give a survey of recent work on the construction of differential operators on various types of modular forms (mod p). We also discuss a framework for determining the effect of such operators on the mod p Galois representations attached to Hecke eigenforms.
The purpose of this paper is to provide answers to some questions raised in a paper by Kaneko and Koike about the modularity of the solutions of a differential equations of hypergeometric type. In particular, we provide a number-theoretic explanation of why the modularity of the solutions occurs in some cases and does not occur in other cases. This also proves their conjecture on the completeness of the list of modular solutions after adding some missing cases.
The genus $4$ modular curve $X_{ns}(11)$ attached to a non-split Cartan group of level $11$ admits a model defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. We compute generators for its function field in terms of Siegel modular functions. We also show that its Jacobian is isomorphic over $\mathbb{Q}$ to the new part of the Jacobian of the classical modular curve $X_0(121)$.
A formal definition of the graded algebra $\mathcal{R}$ of modular linear differential operators is given and its properties are studied. An algebraic structure of the solutions to modular linear differential equations (MLDEs) is shown. It is also proved that any quasimodular form of weight $k$ and depth $s$ becomes a solution to a monic MLDE of weight $k-s$. By using the algebraic properties of $\mathcal{R}$, linear differential operators which map the solution space of a monic MLDE to that of another are determined for sufficiently low weights and orders. Furthermore, a lower bound of the or…
We study Hecke operators on vector-valued modular forms for the Weil representation $ρ_L$ of a lattice $L$. We first construct Hecke operators $\mathcal{T}_r$ that map vector-valued modular forms of type $ρ_L$ into vector-valued modular forms of type $ρ_{L(r)}$, where $L(r)$ is the lattice $L$ with rescaled bilinear form $(\cdot, \cdot)_r = r (\cdot, \cdot)$, by lifting standard Hecke operators for scalar-valued modular forms using Siegel theta functions. The components of the vector-valued Hecke operators $\mathcal{T}_r$ have appeared in [Comm. Math. Phys. 350 (2017), 1069-1121] as generating…
We construct differential operators for families of overconvergent Hilbert modular forms by interpolating the Gauss--Manin connection on strict neighborhoods of the ordinary locus. This is related to work done by Harron and Xiao and by Andreatta and Iovita in the case of modular forms and by Zheng Liu for Siegel modular forms. It has applications in particular to $p$-adic $L$-functions of CM fields.
It is a classical fact that the elliptic modular functions satisfies an algebraic differential equation of order 3, and none of lower order. We show how this generalizes to Siegel modular functions of arbitrary degree. The key idea is that the partial differential equations they satisfy are governed by Gauss--Manin connections, whose monodromy groups are well-known. Modular theta functions provide a concrete interpretation of our result, and we study their differential properties in detail in the case of degree 2.
In a previous paper we attached to classical complex newforms $f$ of weight $2$ certain $δ_p$-modular forms $f^{\sharp}$ of order $2$ and weight $0$; the forms $f^{\sharp}$ can be viewed as "dual" to $f$ and played a key role in some of the applications of the theory. The aim of this paper is to provide a higher weight version of this "$\sharp$-duality," by attaching to classical newforms mod $p$, $\overline{f}$, of weight $κ$ between $3$ and $p$, $δ_π$-modular forms $f^{\sharp}$ of order $2$ and weight $-κ'$, with $κ'$ between $1$ and $p-2$.
We obtain a second order differential equation on moduli space satisfied by certain modular graph functions at genus two, each of which has two links. This eigenvalue equation is obtained by analyzing the variations of these graphs under the variation of the Beltrami differentials. This equation involves seven distinct graphs, three of which appear in the integrand of the $D^8\mathcal{R}^4$ term in the low momentum expansion of the four graviton amplitude at genus two in type II string theory.
A characterization of the minimal $\mathcal{W}$-algebras associated with the Deligne exceptional series at level $-h^\vee/6$ is obtained by using one-parameter family of modular linear differential equations of order $4$. In particular, the characters of the Ramond-twisted modules of minimal $\mathcal{W}$-algebras related to the Deligne exceptional series satisfy one of these differential equations. In order to obtain the characterization, the differential equations in the one parameter family which have solutions of "CFT type" are classified, whose solutions are explicitly described.
We consider the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann $ζ$-function and two classes of $L$-functions; Dirichlet $L$-functions and those based on level one modular forms. We show that there are an infinite number of zeros on the critical line in one-to-one correspondence with the zeros of the cosine function, and thus enumerated by an integer $n$. From this it follows that the ordinate of the $n$-th zero satisfies a transcendental equation that depends only on $n$. Under weak assumptions, we show that the number of solutions of this equation already saturates the counting formula on the entire critic…
We classify ``arithmetic convection equations'' on modular curves, and describe their space of solutions. Certain of these solutions involve the Fourier expansions of the Eisenstein modular forms of weight 4 and 6, while others involve the Serre-Tate expansions of the same modular forms; in this sense, our arithmetic convection equations can be seen as "unifying" the two types of expansions. The theory can be generalized to one of ``arithmetic heat equations'' on modular curves, but we prove that modular curves do not carry ``arithmetic wave equations.'' Finally, we prove an instability result…
In this paper, we explore a two-way connection between quasimodular forms of depth $1$ and a class of second-order modular differential equations with regular singularities on the upper half-plane and the cusps. Here we consider the cases $Γ=Γ_0^+(N)$ generated by $Γ_0(N)$ and the Atkin-Lehner involutions for $N=1,2,3$ ($Γ_0^+(1)=\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)$). Firstly, we note that a quasimodular form of depth $1$, after divided by some modular form with the same weight, is a solution of a modular differential equation. Our main results are the converse of the above statement for the groups $Γ_0^…
We investigate generating functions for the integrals over world-sheet tori appearing in closed-string one-loop amplitudes of bosonic, heterotic and type-II theories. These closed-string integrals are shown to obey homogeneous and linear differential equations in the modular parameter of the torus. We spell out the first-order Cauchy-Riemann and second-order Laplace equations for the generating functions for any number of external states. The low-energy expansion of such torus integrals introduces infinite families of non-holomorphic modular forms known as modular graph forms. Our results gene…
A formalism of arithmetic partial differential equations (PDEs) is being developed in which one considers several arithmetic differentiations at one fixed prime. In this theory solutions can be defined in algebraically closed p-adic fields. As an application we show that for at least two arithmetic directions every elliptic curve possesses a non-zero arithmetic PDE Manin map of order 1; such maps do not exist in the arithmetic ODE case. Similarly we construct and study "genuinely PDE" differential modular forms. As further applications we derive a Theorem of the Kernel and a Reciprocity Theore…
The relations satisfied by period polynomials associated to modular forms yield a way to count dimensions of spaces of cusp forms. After showing how these relations arise from those on the mapping class group $PSL(2, \mathbb{Z})$ of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{0,4}$ of genus 0 curves with 4 marked points, the author goes on to define period polynomials associated to Picard modular forms. Relations on these Picard period polynomials are then determined, and via an embedding of a monodromy representation of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{0,5}$ of genus 0 curves with 5 marked points in $PU(2,1…
Kaneko and Sakai recently observed that certain elliptic curves whose associated newforms (by the modularity theorem) are given by the eta-quotients can be characterized by a particular differential equation involving modular forms and Ramanujan-Serre differential operator. In this paper, we study certain properties of modular parametrizations associated to the elliptic curves over Q, and as a consequence we generalize and explain some of their findings.
In this paper, we consider the problem when a differential equation y"(z)=Q(z)y(z) is Fuchsian on H* and apparent on H, where Q(z) is a meromorphic modular form of weight 4 on SL(2,Z) and H denotes the complex upper half-plane. Such a problem is closely related to the problem of the existence of a conformal metric with curvature 1/2 on H.
The aim of this paper is to show how differential characters of Abelian varieties can be used to construct differential modular forms of weight 0 and order 2 which are eigenvectors of Hecke operators. These differential modular forms have "essentially the same" eigenvalues as certain classical complex eigenforms of weight 2.
The Shimura correspondence connects modular forms of integral weights and half-integral weights. One of the directions is realized by the Shintani lift, where the inputs are holomorphic differentials and the outputs are holomorphic modular forms of half-integral weight. In this article, we generalize this lift to differentials of the third kind. As an application we obtain a modularity result concerning the generating series of winding numbers of closed geodesics on the modular curve.
In the present article we define the algebra of differential modular forms and we prove that it is generated by Eisenstein series of weight $2,4$ and 6. We define Hecke operators on them, find some analytic relations between these Eisenstein series and obtain them in a natural way as coefficients of a family of elliptic curves. The fact that a complex manifold over the moduli of polarized Hodge structures in the case $h^{10}=h^{01}=1$ has an algebraic structure with an action of an algebraic group plays a basic role in all of the proofs.
In this paper, we study third-order modular ordinary differential equations (MODE for short) of the following form $y'''+Q_2(z)y'+Q_3(z)y=0$, $z\in\mathbb{H}=\{z\in\mathbb{C} \,|\,\operatorname{Im}z>0 \}$, where $Q_2(z)$ and $Q_3(z)-\frac12 Q_2'(z)$ are meromorphic modular forms on ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ of weight $4$ and $6$, respectively. We show that any quasimodular form of depth $2$ on ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ leads to such a MODE. Conversely, we introduce the so-called Bol representation $\hatρ\colon {\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})\to{\rm SL}(3,\mathbb{C})$ for this MODE and give the necessary …
We introduce a method in differential geometry to study the derivative operators of Siegel modular forms. By determining the coefficients of the invariant Levi-Civita connection on a Siegel upper half plane, and further by calculating the expressions of the differential forms under this connection, we get a non-holomorphic derivative operator of the Siegel modular forms. In order to get a holomorphic derivative operator, we introduce a weaker notion, called modular connection, on the Siegel upper half plane than a connection in differential geometry. Then we show that on a Siegel upper half pl…
Nesterenko proved, among other results, the algebraic independence over $\QQ$ of the numbers $π,e^π,Γ(1/4)$. A very important feature of his proof is a multiplicity estimate for quasi-modular forms associated to $\SL_2(\ZZ)$ which involves profound differential properties of certain non-linear differential systems. The aim of this article is to begin the study of the analogous properties for Hilbert modular and quasi-modular forms, especially those which are associated with the number field $\QQ(\sqrt{5})$. We show that the differential structure of these functions has several analogies with t…
For a fixed prime we prove structure theorems for the kernel and the image of the map that attaches to any differential modular function its differential Fourier expansion. The image of this map, which is the ring of differential Fourier expansions, plays the role of ring of functions on a "differential Igusa curve". Our constructions are then used to perform an analytic continuation between isogeny covariant differential modular forms on the differential Igusa curves belonging to different primes.
We apply differential operators to modular forms on orthogonal groups $\mathrm{O}(2, \ell)$ to construct infinite families of modular forms on special cycles. These operators generalize the quasi-pullback. The subspaces of theta lifts are preserved; in particular, the higher pullbacks of the lift of a (lattice-index) Jacobi form $ϕ$ are theta lifts of partial development coefficients of $ϕ$. For certain lattices of signature (2, 2) and (2, 3), for which there are interpretations as Hilbert-Siegel modular forms, we observe that the higher pullbacks coincide with differential operators introduce…
In their work, Serre and Swinnerton-Dyer study the congruence properties of the Fourier coefficients of modular forms. We examine similar congruence properties, but for the coefficients of a modified Taylor expansion about a CM point $τ$. These coefficients can be shown to be the product of a power of a constant transcendental factor and an algebraic integer. In our work, we give conditions on $τ$ and a prime number $p$ that, if satisfied, imply that $p^m$ divides the algebraic part of all the Taylor coefficients of $f$ of sufficiently high degree. We also give effective bounds on the largest …
We prove that the ancestor Gromov-Witten correlation functions of one-dimensional compact Calabi-Yau orbifolds are quasi-modular forms. This includes the pillowcase orbifold which can not yet be handled by using Milanov-Ruan's B-model technique. We first show that genus zero modularity is obtained from the phenomenon that the system of WDVV equations is essentially equivalent to the set of Ramanujan identities satisfied by the generators of the ring of quasi-modular forms for a certain modular group associated to the orbifold curve. Higher genus modularity then follows by using tautological re…
In 1900, at the international congress of mathematicians, Hilbert claimed that the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$ is not the solution of any algebraic ordinary differential equations on its region of analyticity. In 2015, Van Gorder considered the question of whether $ζ(s)$ satisfies a non-algebraic differential equation and showed that it formally satisfies an infinite order linear differential equation. Recently, Prado and Klinger-Logan extended Van Gorder's result to show that the Hurwitz zeta function $ζ(s,a)$ is also formally satisfies a similar differential equation \begin{equation*}\label…
