SmFeAsO and the isostructural superconducting SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) samples were prepared. Characterization by means of Rietveld refinement of X-ray powder diffraction data, scanning electron microscope observation, transmission electron microscope analysis, resistivity and magnetization measurements were carried out. Sintering treatment strongly improves the grain connectivity, but, on the other hand, induces a competition between the thermodynamic stability of the oxy-pnictide and Sm2O3, hence worsening the purity of the sample. In the pristine sample both magnetization and resistivity measurements clearly indicate that two different sources of magnetism are present: the former related to Fe ordering at 140 K and the latter due to the Sm ions that orders antiferromagnetically at low temperature. The feature at 140 K disappears in the F-substituted sample and, at low temperatures a superconducting transition appears. The magnetoresistivity curves of the F-substituted sample probably indicates very high critical field values.
We investigated the temperature dependence of the upper critical field [$H_{c2}(T)$] of fluorine-free SmFeAsO$_{0.85}$ and fluorine-doped SmFeAsO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$ single crystals by measuring the resistive transition in low static magnetic fields and in pulsed fields up to 60 T. Both crystals show that $H_{c2}(T)$'s along the c axis [$H_{c2}^c(T)$] and in an $ab$-planar direction [$H_{c2}^{ab}(T)$] exhibit a linear and a sublinear increase, respectively, with decreasing temperature below the superconducting transition. $H_{c2}(T)$'s in both directions deviate from the conventional one-gap Wert…
We report enhancement in the magnetic critical current density of indium added polycrystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx. The value of magnetic Jc is around 25 kA/cm2 at 4.2 K under self-magnetic field. Polycrystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx is mainly composed of the superconducting grains and a little of amorphous FeAs compounds. These areas randomly co-exist and amorphous areas are located between superconducting grains. Therefore, the superconducting current is prevented by the amorphous areas. In this study, it is found that indium addition to polycrystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx removes these amorphous areas and induce…
The interplay between spin dynamics and lattice vibration has been suggested as an important part of the puzzle of high-temperature superconductivity. Here we report the strong interaction between spin fluctuation and phonon in SmFeAsO, a parent compound of the iron arsenide family of superconductors, revealed by low-temperature Raman spectroscopy. Anomalous zone-boundary-phonon Raman scattering from spin superstructure was observed at temperatures below the antiferromagnetic ordering point, which offers compelling evidence on spin dependent electron-phonon coupling in pnictides.
We measured the Raman and the Infrared phonon spectrum of SmFeAsO polycrystalline samples. We also performed Density Functional Theory calculations within the pseudopotential approximation to obtain the structural and dynamical lattice properties of both the SmFeAsO and the prototype LaFeAsO compounds. The measured Raman and Infrared phonon frequencies are well predicted by the optical phonon frequencies computed at the Gamma point, showing the capability of the employed ab-initio methods to describe the dynamical properties of these materials. A comparison among the phonon frequencies of diff…
We report the single crystal growth and characterization of the highest Tc iron-based superconductor SmFeAsO1-xHx. Some sub-millimeter-sized crystals were grown using the mixture flux of Na3As + 3NaH + As at 3.0 GPa and 1473 K. The chemical composition analyses confirmed 10% substitution of hydrogen for the oxygen site (x = 0.10), however, the structural analyses suggested that the obtained crystal forms a multi-domain structure. By using the FIB technique we fabricated the single domain SmFeAsO0.9H0.10 crystal with the Tc of 42 K, and revealed the metallic conduction in in-plane (rhoab), whil…
Thermally activated flux flow and vortex glass transition of recently discovered SmFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ superconductor are studied in magnetic fields up to 9.0 T. The thermally activated energy is analyzed in two analytic methods, of which one is conventional and generally used, while the other is closer to the theoretical description. The thermally activated energy values determined from both methods are discussed and compared. In addition, several critical magnetic fields determined from resistivity measurements are presented and discussed.
SmFeAsO1-xFx tapes were prepared using three kinds of starting materials. It shows that the starting materials have an obvious effect on the impurity phases in final superconducting tapes. Compared with the other samples, the samples fabricated by SmAs, FeO, Fe2As, and SmF3 have the smallest arsenide impurity phase and voids. As a result, these samples possess much denser structure and better grain connectivity. Moreover, among the three kinds of samples fabricated in this work, this kind of sample has the highest zero-resistivity temperature ~40 K and largest critical current density ~4600 A/…
We report the resistivity of a series of fluorine-doped SmFeAsO1-xFx polycrystalline superconductors in magnetic fields up to 60T. For underdoped samples (x < 0.15), the low temperature resistive state is characterized by pronounced magneto-resistance and a resistive upturn at low temperatures. The "insulating behavior" is characterized by a log-T divergence observed over a decade in temperature. In contrast, the normal state for samples with doping x > 0.15 display metallic behavior with little magnetoresistance, where intense magnetic fields broaden the superconducting transition rather than…
The electrical resistivity, crystalline structure and electronic properties calculated from the experimentally measured atomic positions of the compound SmFeAsO$_{0.81}$F$_{0.19}$ have been studied up to pressures ~20GPa. The correlation between the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and crystallographic parameters on the same sample shows clearly that a regular FeAs$_{4}$ tetrahedron maximizes Tc, through optimization of carrier transfer to the FeAs planes as indicated by the evolution of the electronic band structures.
Correlation between structural/microstructural and magneto-thermal transport properties of FeAs-based SmFeAsO and SmFeAsO0.85F0.15 has been studied in detail. The Rietveld analysis of room temperature powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data reveals that both the samples are single phase, with very small amount of rare earth impurity in the F doped compound. Electron microscopic investigations show that compounds have layered morphology and structure, with the individual grains being surrounded by amorphous layers. The average grain boundary thickness is ~5 nm. The F free material is found to be ma…
By measuring the dynamic and traditional magnetization relaxations we investigate the vortex dynamics of the newly discovered superconductor SmFeAsO_0.9F_0.1 with Tc = 55K. It is found that the relaxation rate is rather large reflecting a small characteristic pinning energy. Moreover it shows a weak temperature dependence in wide temperature region, which resembles the behavior of the cuprate superconductors. Combining with the resistive data under different magnetic fields, a vortex phase diagram is obtained. Our results strongly suggest that the model of collective vortex pinning applies to …
$^{19}$F NMR measurements in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, for $0.15\leq x\leq 0.2$, are presented. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ increases upon cooling with a trend analogous to the one already observed in CeCu$_{5.2}$Au$_{0.8}$, a quasi two-dimensional heavy-fermion intermetallic compound with an antiferromagnetic ground-state. In particular, the behaviour of the relaxation rate either in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ or in CeCu$_{5.2}$Au$_{0.8}$ can be described in the framework of the self-consistent renormalization theory for weakly itinerant electron systems. Remarkably, no effect of t…
We probe the local quasiparticles density-of-states in micron-sized SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ single-crystals by means of Scanning Tunnelling Spectroscopy. Spectral features resemble those of cuprates, particularly a dip-hump-like structure developed at energies larger than the gap that can be ascribed to the coupling of quasiparticles to a collective mode, quite likely a resonant spin mode. The energy of the collective mode revealed in our study decreases when the pairing strength increases. Our findings support spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing in pnictides.
We report specific heat measurements at magnetic fields up to 20 T on the recently discovered superconductor SmFeAsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$. The B-T diagram of a polycrystalline SmFeAsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$ sample with T$_c$ = 46 K was investigated. The temperature dependence of B$_{c2}$ was extracted from the specific heat curves, the corresponding B$_{c2}$(T = 0) value derived from the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg formula being 150 T. Based on magnetization measurements up to 9 T, a first estimation of the field dependence of the inductive critical current J$_c$ is given. Evidence for granularity i…
EXAFS studies at the As K edge as a function of temperature have been carried out in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ ($x$ = 0 and 0.2) compounds to understand the role of local structural distortions superconductivity observed in F doped compound. A significant correlation between thermal variation of local structural parameters like anion height and superconducting onset is found in the fluorinated compound. Such a variation in anion height is absent in non-superconducting compound. Increase in Fe-As bond distance just below superconducting onset temperature indicates a similarity in distortions observe…
The low-temperature antiferromagnetic state of the Sm-ions in both nonsuperconducting SmFeAsO and superconducting SmFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ single crystals was studied by magnetic torque, magnetization, and magnetoresistance measurements in magnetic fields up to 60~T and temperatures down to 0.6~K. We uncover in both compounds a distinct rearrangement of the antiferromagnetically ordered Sm-moments near $35-40$~T. This is seen in both, static and pulsed magnetic fields, as a sharp change in the sign of the magnetic torque, which is sensitive to the magnetic anisotropy and hence to the magnetic …
The crystal structure of SmFeAsO has been investigated by means of Rietveld refinement of high resolution synchrotron powder diffraction data collected at 300 K and 100 K. The compound crystallizes in the tetragonal P4/nmm space group at 300 K and in the orthorhombic Cmma space group at 100 K; attempts to refine the low temperature data in the monoclinic P112/n space group diverged. On the basis of both resistive and magnetic analyses the tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transition can be located at T about 140 K.
We study the electronic structure of the SmFeAsO(1-x)F(x) alloy by means of first-principle calculations. We find that, contrary to common believe, F-doping does not change the charge balance between electrons and holes free-carriers in SmFeAsO(1-x)F(x). For energies within a narrow energy range across E_F, the effect of F-doping on the band structure dispersion is tiny in both the paramagnetic and stripe antiferromagnetic phase. The charge balance between the conducting FeAs-layer and the SmO(1-x)F(x) charge reservoir layer is not influenced by the compositional change. The additional charge …
In this paper the magnetic behaviour of SmFeAsO and SmFeAs(O0.85F0.15) samples is presented and discussed. Molar susceptibility of SmFeAsO exhibits a local peak at T around 140K due to the establishment of a long range antiferromagnetic ordering of the Fe moments in Fe-As layers. This feature has already been observed with different techniques, and frequently ascribed to the onset of a Spin Density Wave (SDW). At TN around 6K another peak, which we attribute to the establishment of antiferromagnetic ordering of Sm ion sublattice, is observed. Furthermore, a temperature independent signal (Paul…
We demonstrate the fabrication of superconducting SmFeAsO1-xFx (Sm-1111) wires by using the ex-situ powder-in-tube technique. Sm-1111 powder and a binder composed of SmF3, samarium arsenide, and iron arsenide were used to synthesize the superconducting core. Although the F content of Sm-1111 is reduced in the process of ex-situ fabrication, the binder compensates by sufficiently supplementing the F content, thereby preventing a decrease in the superconducting transition temperature and a shrinkage of the superconducting volume fraction. Thus, in the superconducting Sm-1111 wire with the binder…
Ag-sheathed SmFeAsO0.7F0.3 (Sm-1111) superconducting wires were prepared by a one-step solid state reaction at temperatures as low as 850~900C, instead of commonly used temperatures of 1150~1250C. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the as-sintered samples is well indexed on the basis of tetragonal ZrCuSiAs-type structure. We characterized transport critical current density Jc of the SmFeAsO0.7F0.3 wires in increasing and subsequently decreasing fields, by a resistive four-probe method. A transport Jc as high as ~1300 A/cm^2 at 4.2 K and self field has been observed for the first time in Sm-1111 …
Superconducting single crystals of SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$ without fluorine doping were grown at a pressure of 3.3 GPa and a temperature of 1350-1450 $^\circ$C by using the self-flux method. Plate-like single crystals of a few-150 $μ$m in their lateral size were obtained. Single crystals showed the superconducting transition at about 53.5 K with a narrow transition width of 0.5 K. The synchrotron-irradiated x-ray diffractometry patterns and high-angle-annular-dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy images point to the high quality of the crystals with a well-defined layered tetragonal str…
Measurements of the in-plane magnetic field penetration depth λ_{ab} in Fe-based superconductors with the nominal composition SmFeAsO_0.85 (T_c\simeq52K) and NdFeAsO_0.85 (T_c\simeq51K) were carried out by means of muon-spin-rotation. The absolute values of λ_{ab} at T=0 were found to be 189(5)nm and 195(5)nm for Sm and Nd substituted samples, respectively. The analysis of the magnetic penetration depth data within the Uemura classification scheme, which considers the correlation between the superconducting transition temperature T_c and the effective Fermi temperature T_F, reveal that both fa…
The fluorine-doped rare-earth iron oxypnictide series SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ (0 $\leq x \leq$ 0.10) was investigated with high resolution powder x-ray scattering. In agreement with previous studies, the parent compound SmFeAsO exhibits a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural distortion at T$\rm{_{S}}$~=~130~K which is rapidly suppressed by $x \simeq$ 0.10 deep within the superconducting dome. The change in unit cell symmetry is followed by a previously unreported magnetoelastic distortion at 120~K. The temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient $α_{V}$ reveals a rich phase diagr…
Ac susceptibility and static magnetization measurements were performed in the optimally doped SmFeAsO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$ superconductor. The field - temperature phase diagram of the superconducting state was drawn and, in particular, the features of the flux line lattice derived. The dependence of the intra-grain depinning energy on the magnetic field intensity was derived in the thermally-activated flux creep framework, enlightening a typical 1/H dependence in the high-field regime. The intra-grain critical current density was extrapolated in the zero temperature and zero magnetic field limit, …
Muon-spin rotation experiments were performed on the pnictide high temperature superconductor SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ with x=0.18 and 0.3. We observed an unusual enhancement of slow spin fluctuations in the vicinity of the superconducting which suggests that the spin fluctuations contribute to the formation of an unconventional superconducting state. An estimate of the in-plane penetration depth $λ_{ab}(0)=190(5)$\thinspace nm was obtained, which confirms that the pnictide superconductors obey an Uemura-style relationship between $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ and $λ_{ab}(0)^{-2}$.
We present uSR investigations on SmFeAsO_1-xF_x showing coexistence of magnetic order and superconductivity only in a very narrow F-doping range. The sharp crossover between the two types of order is similar to that observed in LaFeAsO_1-xF_x, suggesting a common behavior for the 1111 pnictides. The analysis of the muon asymmetry demonstrates that the coexistence must be nanoscopic, i.e. the two phases must be finely interspersed over a typical length-scale of few nm. In this regime both the magnetic and the superconducting transition temperatures collapse to very low values. Our data suggest …
We investigate the quasiparticle relaxation and low-energy electronic structure in undoped SmFeAsO and near-optimally doped SmFeAsO_{0.8}F_{0.2} single crystals - exhibiting spin-density wave (SDW) ordering and superconductivity respectively - using pump-probe femtosecond spectroscopy. In the undoped single crystals a single relaxation process is observed, showing a remarkable critical slowing down of the QP relaxation dynamics at the SDW transition temperature T_{SDW}\simeq125{K}. In the superconducting (SC) crystals multiple relaxation processes are present, with distinct SC state quasiparti…
We report measurements of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth $λ$ in single crystals of SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_y$ ($x\simeq y \simeq 0.2$) with $T_c \simeq 45$ K. We find that at low temperature $λ$ has an exponential temperature dependence which suggests that the Fermi surface is fully gapped. The magnitude of the minimum energy gap, $Δ_1=1.1\pm 0.1 k_BT_c$ at T=0 K, is significantly smaller than the BCS weak-coupling value suggesting that the gap is either strongly anisotropic or varies significantly between the different Fermi surface sheets. Our data fits well a two gap model with an additi…
The critical current densities of polycrystalline bulk SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ prepared by the powder-in-tube (PIT) method and by a conventional solid-state reaction were investigated using the remnant magnetic moment method and Campbell's method. Two types of shielding current, corresponding to global and local critical current densities $J_{\rm c}$ were observed using both measurement methods. The global and local $J_{\rm c}$ were on the order of $10^7$ A/m$^2$ and $10^{10}$ A/m$^2$ at 5 K, respectively. The local $J_{\rm c}$ decreased slightly with increasing magnetic field. The global $J_{\rm…
Through partial substitution of Sm by U in SmFeAsO, a different member of the family of iron-based superconductors was successfully synthesized. X-ray diffraction measurements show that the lattice constants along the a and c axes are both squeezed through U doping, indicating a successful substitution of U at the Sm site. The parent compound shows a strong resistivity anomaly near 150 K, associated with spin-density-wave instability.U doping suppresses this instability and leads to a transition to the superconducting state at temperatures up to 49 K. Magnetic measurements confirm the bulk sup…
We use femtosecond spectroscopy to investigate the quasiparticle relaxation and low-energy electronic structure in a near-optimally doped pnictide superconductor with T_c=49.5 K. Multiple relaxation processes are evident, with distinct superconducting state quasiparticle (QP) recombination dynamics exhibiting a T-dependent superconducting (SC) gap, and a clear "pseudogap" (PG) -like feature with an onset around 200K indicating the existence of a temperature-independent gap of magnitude Δ_PG= 61 +- 9 meV above T_c. Both the SC and PG components show saturation as a function of fluence with dist…
A crystallographic and magnetic phase diagram of SmFeAsO1-xFx is determined as a function of x in terms of temperature based on electrical transport and magnetization, synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction, 57Fe Mossbauer spectra (MS), and 149Sm nuclear resonant forward scattering (NRFS) measurements. MS revealed that the magnetic moments of Fe were aligned antiferromagnetically at ~144 K (TN(Fe)). The magnetic moment of Fe (MFe) is estimated to be 0.34 myuB/Fe at 4.2 K for undoped SmFeAsO; MFe is quenched in superconducting F-doped SmFeAsO. 149Sm NRFS spectra revealed that the magnetic moments…
We measured dispersive spin excitations in $\mathrm{SmFeAsO}$, parent compound of $\mathrm{SmFeAsO_{\text{1-x}}F_{\text{x}}}$ one of the highest temperature superconductors of Fe pnictides (T$_{\text{C}}\approx$55~K). We determine the magnetic excitations to disperse with a bandwidth energy of ca 170 meV at (0.47, 0) and (0.34, 0.34), which merges into the elastic line approaching the $Γ$ point. Comparing our results with other parent Fe pnictides, we show the importance of structural parameters for the magnetic excitation spectrum, with small modifications of the tetrahedron angles and As hei…
Single crystals of SmFeAsO1-xFy of a size up to 120 micrometers have been grown from NaCl/KCl flux at a pressure of 30 kbar and temperature of 1350-1450 C using the cubic anvil high-pressure technique. The superconducting transition temperature of the obtained single crystals varies between 45 and 53 K.Obtained crystals are characterized by a full diamagnetic response in low magnetic fields and by a high critical current density in high magnetic fields. Structural refinement has been performed on single crystal. Differential thermal analysis investigations at 1 bar Ar pressure show decompositi…
We have performed zero-field $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance study of SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ (x=0, 0.07) polycrystals in a wide frequency range at various temperatures. $^{75}$As resonance line was found at around 265 MHz revealing the formation of the intermetallic FeAs clusters in the new layered superconductors. We have also demonstrated that NMR is a sensitive tool for probing the quality of these materials.
Superconducting fluctuations (SF) in SmFeAsO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$ (characterized by superconducting transition temperature $T_{c} \simeq 52.3$ K) are investigated by means of isothermal high-resolution dc magnetization measurements. The diamagnetic response to magnetic fields up to 1 T above $T_{c}$ is similar to what previously reported for underdoped cuprate superconductors and it can be justified in terms of metastable superconducting islands at non-zero order parameter lacking of long-range coherence because of strong phase fluctuations. In the high-field regime ($H \gtrsim 1.5$ T) scaling arg…
Bulk polycrystalline samples, SmFeAsO and the iso-structural superconducting SmFeAsO0.80F0.20 are explored through resistivity with temperature under magnetic field ρ(T, H), AC and DC magnetization (M-T), and Specific heat (Cp) measurements. The Resistivity measurement shows superconductivity for x = 0.20 sample with Tc(onset) ~ 51.7K. The upper critical field, [Hc2(0)] is estimated ~3770kOe by Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory. Broadening of superconducting transition in magneto transport is studied through thermally activated flux flow in applied field up to 130 kOe. The flux flow activation energ…
We report measurements of resistivity, magnetoresistivity, Hall effect, Seebeck coefficient, infrared reflectivity of undoped SmFeAsO and lightly doped SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) oxypnictides. All the properties measured on SmFeAsO are characterized by clear signatures of the magnetic instability. A self-consistent picture emerges in which below the magnetic transition carrier condensation occurs due to the opening of spin density wave (SDW) gap. This is accompanied by the mobility increase of not gapped carriers due to the suppression of electron-electron scattering. SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) exhibits an in…
We report measurements of the phonon density of states as measured with inelastic x-ray scattering in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_y$ powders. An unexpected strong renormalization of phonon branches around 23 meV is observed as fluorine is substituted for oxygen. Phonon dispersion measurements on SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_y$ single crystals allow us to identify the 21 meV A$_{1g}$ in-phase (Sm,As) and the 26 meV B$_{1g}$ (Fe,O) modes to be responsible for this renormalization, and may reveal unusual electron-phonon coupling through the spin channel in iron-based superconductors.
We report the resistivity, magnetization and 19^F NMR results in polycrystalline sample of SmFeAsO_(0.86)F_(0.14). The resistivity and the magnetization data show a sharp drop at 48 K indicating the superconducting transition. The nuclear spin-lattice rate (1/T_1) and spin-spin relaxation rate (1/T_2) clearly show the existence of a structural phase transition near 163 K in the sample which also undergo superconducting transition. This finding creates interest to explore whether this is unique for only Sm based systems or it is also present in other rare-earth based 1111 superconductors.
A series of polycrystalline SmFeAs1-xOx bulks was prepared to systematically investigate the influence of sample density on flux pinning properties. Different sample densities were achieved by controlling the pelletizing pressure. The superconducting volume fraction, the critical current densities Jcm and the flux pinning force densities Fp were estimated from the magnetization measurements. Experimental results manifest that: (1) the superconducting volume fraction decreases with the decreasing of sample density. (2) The Jcm values have the similar trend except for the sample with very high d…
Single crystals of the oxypnictide superconductor SmFeAsO_(0.8)F_(0.2) with T_c=45(1) K were investigated by torque magnetometry. The crystals of mass~0.1 mug were grown by a high-pressure cubic anvil technique. The use of a high-sensitive piezoresistive torque sensor made it possible to study the anisotropic magnetic properties of these tiny crystals. The anisotropy parameter was found to be field independent, but varies strongly with temperature ranging from 8 at T=T_c to 23 at T=0.4T_c. This unusual behavior signals unconventional superconductivity.
Low temperature specific heat (SH) was measured on the FeAs-based superconducting single crystals Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and high pressure synthesized polycrystalline samples SmFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$. It is found that the sharp SH anomaly $ΔC/T|_{T_c}$ in Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ reaches an unexpected high value of 98 mJ/mol K$^2$, about one order of magnitude larger than that of SmFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ ($6\sim8$ mJ/mol K$^2$) samples, suggesting very high normal state quasiparticle density of states in FeAs-122 than in FeAs-1111. Furthermore, we found that the electronic SH c…
The magnetic field dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth for optimally doped SmFeAsO_(1-x)F_y was investigated by combining torque magnetometry, SQUID magnetometry, and muon-spin rotation. The results obtained from these techniques show all a pronounced decrease of the superfluid density as the field is increased up to 1.4 T. This behavior is analysed within a two-band model with self-consistently derived coupled gaps, where the superfluid density related to the larger gap is field independent and the superfluid density related to the smaller gap is strongly suppressed with inc…
The fluorine-doped rare-earth iron oxyarsenides, REFeAsO1-xFx (RE =rare earth) have recently emerged as a new family of high-temperature superconductors with transition temperatures (Tc) as high as 55 K (refs 1-4). Early work has provided compelling evidence that the undoped parent materials exhibit spin-density-wave (SDW) antiferromagnetic order and undergo a structural phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic crystal symmetry upon cooling.5 Both the magnetic and structural instabilities are suppressed upon doping with fluoride ions before the appearance of superconductivity.6,7 Here …
Superconducting poly- and single-crystalline samples of Sm1-xThxFeAsO with partial substitution of Sm3+ by Th4+ were synthesized and grown under high pressure and their structural, magnetic and transport properties are studied. The superconducting Tc reaches values higher than 50 K. Bulk superconducting samples (x = 0.08, 0.15, 0.3) do not show any signs of a phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic crystal structure at low temperatures. With Th substitution the unit cell parameters a and c shrink and the fractional atomic coordinate of the As site zAs remains almost unchanged, while t…
We made electrical transport measurements along the c-axis of SmFeAsO0.85 single crystals, in both three- and four-terminal configurations, focusing on examining the possible formation of Josephson coupling between FeAs superconducting layers. Anisotropic bulk superconductivity was observed along the c-axis, but without Josephson coupling, as confirmed by the absence of both the hysteresis in current-voltage curves and the modulation of the critical current by the in-plane magnetic fields. The variation of the critical currents for different magnetic-field directions gives the anisotropy ratio…
Iron-based superconductor SmFeAsO(0.91)F(0.09) has been investigated by the 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy versus temperature with the special attention paid to the region of the superconducting transition at about 47 K. Modulation of the electron charge density was found. It leads to the development of the charge density wave (CDW) and electric field gradient wave (EFGW). The modulation of CDW is enhanced in the temperature region of the superconducting gap opening, while the amplitude of EFGW is partly suppressed within this temperature region. This effect is exactly opposite to the similar ef…
The magnetic structures adopted by the Fe and Sm sublattices in SmFeAsO have been investigated using element specific x-ray resonant and non-resonant magnetic scattering techniques. Between 110 and 5 K, the Sm and Fe moments are aligned along the c and a directions, respectively according to the same magnetic representation $Γ_{5}$ and the same propagation vector (1, 0, 0.5). Below 5 K, magnetic order of both sublattices change to a different magnetic structure and the Sm moments reorder in a magnetic unit cell equal to the chemical unit cell. Modeling of the temperature dependence for the Sm …
We have investigated the evolution of the low temperature specific heat anomaly (TN=5.4K in zero field) in polycrystalline SmFeAsO samples with magnetic fields up to 35T. The anomaly remains very sharp up to 16T and becomes rounded with little shift in temperature at higher fields. Doped (superconducting) SmFeAsO0.85F0.15 sample shows a similar behavior up to 16T. The initial slope of the critical field dBc/dT is 160T/K for undoped SmFeAsO and 70T/K for doped SmFeAsO0.85F0.15, with Bc(T) defined at the peak of the specific heat anomaly. The insensitivity to the application of an external magne…
We measure magnetotransport of F doped SmFeAsO samples up to 28T and we extract the upper critical fields, using different criteria. In order to circumvent the problem of criterion-dependence Hc2 values, we suggest a thermodynamic estimation of the upper critical field slope dHc2/dT based on the analysis of conductivity fluctuations in the critical regime. A high field slope as large as -12T/K is thus extracted for the optimally doped sample. We find evidence of a two-dimensional lowest Landau level (LLL) scaling for applied fields larger than mu_0H_LLL=8T. Finally, we estimate the coherence l…
We report the Hall resistivity, $ρ_{xy}$ of polycrystalline SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ for four different fluorine concentrations from the onset of superconductivity through the collapse of the structural phase transition. For the two more highly-doped samples, $ρ_{xy}$ is linear in magnetic field up to 50 T with only weak temperature dependence, reminiscent of a simple Fermi liquid. For the lightly-doped samples with $x<0.15$, we find a low temperature regime characterized $ρ_{xy}(H)$ being both non-linear in magnetic field and strongly temperature dependent even though the Hall angle is small. T…
In this paper the magnetic behaviour of undoped and 15% F doped SmFeAsO (Sm-1111) and LaFeAsO (La-1111) samples is presented and discussed. Magnetization measurements are not a simple tool to use for the characterisation of the new family of Fe-based superconductors because magnetic impurities can be easily formed during the preparation procedure and may affect the magnetic signal. In spite of this problem bulk magnetization measurements, properly treated, may give very useful information. In the undoped samples we gathered the main aspects of the physical behavior of the 1111 phase, i.e. the …
In the iron-based high-Tc bulk superconductors, Tc above 50K was only observed in the electron-doped 1111-type compounds. Here we revisit the electron-doped SmFeAsO polycrystals to make a further investigation for the highest T-c in these materials. To introduce more electron carriers and less crystal lattice distortions, we study the Th and F codoping effects into the Sm-O layers with heavy electron doping. Dozens of Sm1-x Th-x FeAsO1-y F-y samples are synthesized through the solid state reaction method, and these samples are carefully characterized by the structural, resistive, and magnetic …
Low-temperature synthesis is a promising and potentially effective method for improving superconducting properties. We report on the fabrication of polycrystalline samples of SmFeAsO1-xFx with nominal x content varying in a wide range of x = 0-0.35 synthesized at 900 deg C. This synthesis temperature is around 300 deg C lower than the conventional synthesis temperature. The variation in the lattice parameters and transition temperature (Tc) of various F-doped samples indicates that reduction of the unit cell volume (V) seems to be the main reason for the rise of Tc up to 57.8 K. Magnetoresista…
Magnetic measurements and 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy studies were performed on oxygen- deficient high temperature superconductor SmFeAsO0.85 with TC=52.4 K. The upper-critical behavior (HC2) values were extracted from the real part of ac measurements. The field dependence of HC2 is consistent with a two band model. Mössbauer spectra below and above TC consist of a singlet and a doublet, which are attributed to Fe ions which have two or one oxygen ions in their close vicinity, respectively. No change is observed in the major (~75%) singlet related to Fe ions surrounded by two oxygen ions. On t…
We report synthesis, structure, electrical transport and heat capacity of SmFeAsO. The title compound is synthesized by one-step encapsulation of stoichiometric FeAs, Sm, and Sm2O3 in an evacuated (10-5 Torr) quartz tube by prolong (72 hours) annealing at 1100oC. The as synthesized compound is crystallized in tetragonal structure with P4/nmm space group having lattice parameters a = 3.93726(33) A and c = 8.49802(07) A. The resistance (R-T) measurements on the compound exhibited ground state spin-density-wave (SDW)-like metallic steps below 140 K. Heat capacity CP(T) measurements on the title c…
The mechanism of superconductivity in pnictides is discussed through direct doping in superconducting FeAs and also in charge reservoir REO layers. The un-doped SmFeAsO is charge neutral SDW (Spin Density Wave) compound with magnetic ordering below 150 K. The Superconducting FeAs layers are doped with Co and Ni at Fe site, whereas REO layers are doped with F at O site. The electron doping in SmFeAsO through Co results in superconductivity with transition temperature (Tc) maximum up to 15 K, whereas F doping results in Tc upto 47 K in SmFeAsO. All these REFe/Co/NiAsO/F compounds are iso-structu…
