We report the Hall resistivity, $ρ_{xy}$ of polycrystalline SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ for four different fluorine concentrations from the onset of superconductivity through the collapse of the structural phase transition. For the two more highly-doped samples, $ρ_{xy}$ is linear in magnetic field up to 50 T with only weak temperature dependence, reminiscent of a simple Fermi liquid. For the lightly-doped samples with $x<0.15$, we find a low temperature regime characterized $ρ_{xy}(H)$ being both non-linear in magnetic field and strongly temperature dependent even though the Hall angle is small. The onset temperature for this non-linear regime is in the vicinity of the structural phase (SPT)/spin density wave (SDW) transitions. The temperature dependence of the Hall resistivity is consistent with a thermal activation of carriers across an energy gap. The evolution of the energy gap with doping is reported.
We report measurements of resistivity, magnetoresistivity, Hall effect, Seebeck coefficient, infrared reflectivity of undoped SmFeAsO and lightly doped SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) oxypnictides. All the properties measured on SmFeAsO are characterized by clear signatures of the magnetic instability. A self-consistent picture emerges in which below the magnetic transition carrier condensation occurs due to the opening of spin density wave (SDW) gap. This is accompanied by the mobility increase of not gapped carriers due to the suppression of electron-electron scattering. SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) exhibits an in…
We investigate the quasiparticle relaxation and low-energy electronic structure in undoped SmFeAsO and near-optimally doped SmFeAsO_{0.8}F_{0.2} single crystals - exhibiting spin-density wave (SDW) ordering and superconductivity respectively - using pump-probe femtosecond spectroscopy. In the undoped single crystals a single relaxation process is observed, showing a remarkable critical slowing down of the QP relaxation dynamics at the SDW transition temperature T_{SDW}\simeq125{K}. In the superconducting (SC) crystals multiple relaxation processes are present, with distinct SC state quasiparti…
In this paper the magnetic behaviour of undoped and 15% F doped SmFeAsO (Sm-1111) and LaFeAsO (La-1111) samples is presented and discussed. Magnetization measurements are not a simple tool to use for the characterisation of the new family of Fe-based superconductors because magnetic impurities can be easily formed during the preparation procedure and may affect the magnetic signal. In spite of this problem bulk magnetization measurements, properly treated, may give very useful information. In the undoped samples we gathered the main aspects of the physical behavior of the 1111 phase, i.e. the …
A comparative study of thermal properties of SmFeAsO, SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) and SmFeAs(O0.85F0.15) samples is presented. Specific heat and thermal conductivity show clear evidences of the spin density wave (SDW) ordering below TSDW 135 K in undoped SmFeAsO. At low level of F-doping, SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07), SDW ordering is suppressed and superconducting features are not yet optimally developed in both specific heat and thermal conductivity. At optimal level of F-doping SmFeAs(O0.85F0.15) anomalies related to the superconducting transition are well noticeable. By a compared analysis of doped and undope…
We investigate the quasiparticle relaxation and low-energy electronic structure in undoped SrFe_2As_2 exhibiting spin-density wave (SDW) ordering using optical pump-probe femtosecond spectroscopy. A remarkable critical slowing down of the quasiparticle relaxation dynamics at the SDW transition temperature T_SDW = 200K is observed. From temperature dependence of the transient reflectivity amplitude we determine the SDW-state charge gap magnitude, 2Delta_SDW/k_BT_SDW=7.2+-1. The second moment of the Eliashberg function, lambda<(hbar omega)^2>=110+-10meV^2, determined from the relaxation time abo…
We study the electronic structure of the SmFeAsO(1-x)F(x) alloy by means of first-principle calculations. We find that, contrary to common believe, F-doping does not change the charge balance between electrons and holes free-carriers in SmFeAsO(1-x)F(x). For energies within a narrow energy range across E_F, the effect of F-doping on the band structure dispersion is tiny in both the paramagnetic and stripe antiferromagnetic phase. The charge balance between the conducting FeAs-layer and the SmO(1-x)F(x) charge reservoir layer is not influenced by the compositional change. The additional charge …
Through partial substitution of Sm by U in SmFeAsO, a different member of the family of iron-based superconductors was successfully synthesized. X-ray diffraction measurements show that the lattice constants along the a and c axes are both squeezed through U doping, indicating a successful substitution of U at the Sm site. The parent compound shows a strong resistivity anomaly near 150 K, associated with spin-density-wave instability.U doping suppresses this instability and leads to a transition to the superconducting state at temperatures up to 49 K. Magnetic measurements confirm the bulk sup…
Here we report the synthesis and basic characterization of SmFe1-xCoxAsO (x=0.10, 0.15). The parent compound SmFeAsO itself is not superconducting but shows an antiferromagnetic order near 150 K, which must be suppressed by doping before superconductivity emerges. With Co-doping in the FeAs planes, antiferromagnetic order is destroyed and superconductivity occurs at 15 K. Similar to LaFe1-xCoxAsO, the SmFe1-xCoxAsO system appears to tolerate considerable disorder in the FeAs planes. This result is important, which indicates difference between cuprare superconductors and the iron-based arsenide…
We report the analysis of fluctuation conductivity (FLC) and pseudogap (D*) in Fe-based superconductor SmFeAsO0.85 with Tc = 55 K derived from resistivity experiments. In the FLC analysis distinct 2D-3D (MT-AL) crossover typical for cuprates but followed by enhanced MT fluctuation contribution was found. Using the crossover temperature To coherence length along c-axis Xc(0) was determined. Rather specific D*(T) dependence with two representative temperatures followed by minimum at about 125 K was observed. Below Ts = 147 K, corresponding to SDW ordering, D*(T) decreases linearly down to TAF = …
We report inelastic x-ray scattering experiments on the lattice dynamics in SmFeAsO and superconducting SmFeAsO$_{0.6}$F$_{0.35}$ single crystals. Particular attention was paid to the dispersions along the [100] direction of three optical modes close to 23 meV, polarized out of the FeAs planes. Remarkably, two of these modes are strongly renormalized upon fluorine doping. These results provide significant insight into the energy and momentum dependence of the coupling of the lattice to the electron system and underline the importance of spin-phonon coupling in the superconducting iron-pnictide…
The mechanism of superconductivity in pnictides is discussed through direct doping in superconducting FeAs and also in charge reservoir REO layers. The un-doped SmFeAsO is charge neutral SDW (Spin Density Wave) compound with magnetic ordering below 150 K. The Superconducting FeAs layers are doped with Co and Ni at Fe site, whereas REO layers are doped with F at O site. The electron doping in SmFeAsO through Co results in superconductivity with transition temperature (Tc) maximum up to 15 K, whereas F doping results in Tc upto 47 K in SmFeAsO. All these REFe/Co/NiAsO/F compounds are iso-structu…
In this paper the magnetic behaviour of SmFeAsO and SmFeAs(O0.85F0.15) samples is presented and discussed. Molar susceptibility of SmFeAsO exhibits a local peak at T around 140K due to the establishment of a long range antiferromagnetic ordering of the Fe moments in Fe-As layers. This feature has already been observed with different techniques, and frequently ascribed to the onset of a Spin Density Wave (SDW). At TN around 6K another peak, which we attribute to the establishment of antiferromagnetic ordering of Sm ion sublattice, is observed. Furthermore, a temperature independent signal (Paul…
Hydrostatic pressure Raman measurements have been carried out on the SmFeAsO series of oxypnictides with varying amount of doping (F substitution for O and Co for Fe) and transition temperature (T_{c}), in order to investigate lattice modifications and their connection to doping and superconductivity. Synchrotron XRD data on some of these compounds indicated that at low doping the lattice constants vary smoothly with pressure, but with increasing F concentration there is a deviation from the normal equation of state and these effects are related with modifications in the superconducting FeAs4 …
We describe the interplay between d-wave superconductivity and spin density wave (SDW) order in a theory of the hole-doped cuprates at hole densities below optimal doping. The theory assumes local SDW order, and associated electron and hole pocket Fermi surfaces of charge carriers in the normal state. We describe quantum and thermal fluctuations in the orientation of the local SDW order, which lead to d-wave superconductivity: we compute the superconducting critical temperature and magnetic field in a `minimal' universal theory. We also describe the back-action of the superconductivity on the …
The fluorine-doped rare-earth iron oxypnictide series SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ (0 $\leq x \leq$ 0.10) was investigated with high resolution powder x-ray scattering. In agreement with previous studies, the parent compound SmFeAsO exhibits a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural distortion at T$\rm{_{S}}$~=~130~K which is rapidly suppressed by $x \simeq$ 0.10 deep within the superconducting dome. The change in unit cell symmetry is followed by a previously unreported magnetoelastic distortion at 120~K. The temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient $α_{V}$ reveals a rich phase diagr…
In iron-based superconductors, a spin-density-wave (SDW) magnetic order is suppressed with doping and unconventional superconductivity appears in close proximity to the SDW instability. The optical response of the SDW order shows clear gap features: substantial suppression in the low-frequency optical conductivity, alongside a spectral weight transfer from low to high frequencies. Here, we study the detailed temperature dependence of the optical response in three different series of the Ba122 system [Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-…
The fluorine-doped rare-earth iron oxyarsenides, REFeAsO1-xFx (RE =rare earth) have recently emerged as a new family of high-temperature superconductors with transition temperatures (Tc) as high as 55 K (refs 1-4). Early work has provided compelling evidence that the undoped parent materials exhibit spin-density-wave (SDW) antiferromagnetic order and undergo a structural phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic crystal symmetry upon cooling.5 Both the magnetic and structural instabilities are suppressed upon doping with fluoride ions before the appearance of superconductivity.6,7 Here …
We present the first comprehensive derivation of the intrinsic electronic phase diagram of the iron-oxypnictide superconductors in the normal state based on the analysis of the electrical resistivity $ρ$ of both LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ and SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ for a wide range of doping. Our data give clear-cut evidence for unusual normal state properties in these new materials. In particular, the emergence of superconductivity at low doping levels is accompanied by distinct anomalous transport behavior in $ρ$ of the normal state which is reminiscent of the spin density wave (SDW) signature in th…
We report the resistivity of a series of fluorine-doped SmFeAsO1-xFx polycrystalline superconductors in magnetic fields up to 60T. For underdoped samples (x < 0.15), the low temperature resistive state is characterized by pronounced magneto-resistance and a resistive upturn at low temperatures. The "insulating behavior" is characterized by a log-T divergence observed over a decade in temperature. In contrast, the normal state for samples with doping x > 0.15 display metallic behavior with little magnetoresistance, where intense magnetic fields broaden the superconducting transition rather than…
It is demonstrated that SC mechanism of doped Fe-based compounds is characteristic for itinerant electron systems with coexistence of both (e-e)- and (e-h)-pairing arising due to electron-phonon and Coulomb interactions, respectively. The higher Tc of the SC transition here (as compared with conventional (LTSC) BCS-systems without (e-h)-pairing) is a natural consequence of (e-e)-pairing at the background of high density of states which arises in the narrow energy range near dielectric-(SDW)-gap (pseudogap) edges due to removing of electronic states from the energy region of dielectric (SDW) ga…
Single crystals of LaFeAsO, NdFeAsO, and SmFeAsO have been prepared by means of a NaAs flux growth technique and studied by optical spectroscopy measurements. We show that the spectral features corresponding to the partial energy gaps in the spin-density-wave (SDW) state are present below the structural phase transition. This indicates that the electronic state below the structural phase transition is already very close to that in the SDW state. We also show that in-plane infrared phonon modes display systematic shifts towards high frequency upon rare-earth element substitutions for La, sugges…
We study systematically transport, susceptibility and heat capacity for BaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ single crystals. In the underdoped region, spin density wave (SDW) transition is observed in both resistivity and susceptibility. The magnetic susceptibility shows unusual T-linear dependence above SDW transition up to 700 K. With Co doping, SDW ordering is gradually suppressed and superconductivity emerges with a dome-like shape. Electrical transport, specific heat and magnetic susceptibility indicate that SDW and superconductivity coexist in the sample BaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ around x = 0.17, be…
Superconducting single crystals of SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$ without fluorine doping were grown at a pressure of 3.3 GPa and a temperature of 1350-1450 $^\circ$C by using the self-flux method. Plate-like single crystals of a few-150 $μ$m in their lateral size were obtained. Single crystals showed the superconducting transition at about 53.5 K with a narrow transition width of 0.5 K. The synchrotron-irradiated x-ray diffractometry patterns and high-angle-annular-dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy images point to the high quality of the crystals with a well-defined layered tetragonal str…
We present uSR investigations on SmFeAsO_1-xF_x showing coexistence of magnetic order and superconductivity only in a very narrow F-doping range. The sharp crossover between the two types of order is similar to that observed in LaFeAsO_1-xF_x, suggesting a common behavior for the 1111 pnictides. The analysis of the muon asymmetry demonstrates that the coexistence must be nanoscopic, i.e. the two phases must be finely interspersed over a typical length-scale of few nm. In this regime both the magnetic and the superconducting transition temperatures collapse to very low values. Our data suggest …
We establish the phase diagram of Eu$_{1-x}$La$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ system as a function of doping level x and the pressure by measuring the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. The pressure can suppress the spin density wave (SDW) and structural transition very efficiently, while enhance the antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperature T$_N$ of Eu$^{2+}$. The superconductivity coexists with SDW order at the low pressure, while always coexists with the Eu$^{2+}$ AFM order. The results suggests that Eu$^{2+}$ spin dynamics is disentangeld with superconducting (SC) pairing taken place in the tw…
We report synthesis, structural details and magnetization of SmFe1-xCoxAsO with x ranging from 0.0 to 0.30. It is found that Co substitutes fully at Fe site in SmFeAsO in an iso-structural lattice with slightly compressed cell. The parent compound exhibited known spin density wave (SDW) character below at around 140 K. Successive doping of Co at Fe site suppressed the SDW transition for x = 0.05 and later induced superconductivity for x = 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20 respectively at 14, 15.5 and 9K. The lower critical field as seen from magnetization measurements is below 200Oe. The appearance of bulk …
We report a doping dependent electronic Raman scattering measurements on iron-pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals. A strongly anisotropic gap is found at optimal doping for x=0.065 with $Δ_{max}\sim 5Δ_{min}$. Upon entering the coexistence region between superconducting (SC) and spin-density-wave (SDW) orders, the effective pairing energy scale is strongly reduced. Our results are interpreted in terms of a competition between SC and SDW orders for electronic state at the Fermi level. Our findings advocate for a strong connection between the SC and SDW gaps an…
The discovery of EuFeAs2, currently the only charge-neutral parent phase of the 112-type iron-pnictide system, provides a new platform for the study of elemental doping effects on magnetism and superconductivity (SC). In this study, a series of polycrystalline EuFe1-yCoyAs2 and Eu0.9Pr0.1Fe1-yCoyAs2 samples are synthesized through solid-state reaction, and the evolutions of SC and magnetism with Co doping in EuFeAs2 and Eu0.9Pr0.1FeAs2 are investigated by electrical transport and magnetic susceptibility measurements. For EuFe1-yCoyAs2, the Eu-related antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition around 4…
We study the doping dependence of the spin-density-wave (SDW) state in four models of the 1111 pnictides. The random-phase approximation is used to determine the ordering temperature and the ordering vector as functions of doping, and to evaluate the contribution of the various orbitals to the SDW instability. In addition to the usual assumption of orbitally rotation-invariant interactions, we consider the effect of reduced interactions involving the xy orbital, which are anticipated by crystal-structure considerations. We find that changing the relative strength of the interaction in the xy o…
The (Cu)13-BEC model of high-temperature superconductivity was previously shown to account for many of the principal thermodynamic and electronic properties of the superconducting cuprates. Here I show that this model is also able to account for many of the key characteristics of the coupled CDW and SDW orders in these compounds. These include the general coexistence of metallic parallel stripes with superconductivity, the well-known linear relationship between the incommensurability of the SDW-induced IC magnetic peaks and the dopant concentration, as well as the saturation of this incommensu…
We consider the interplay between superconducting (SC) and commensurate spin-density-wave (SDW) orders in iron-pnictides by analyzing a multiple order Ginzburg-Landau free energy. We are particularly interested in whether the doping-induced transition between the two states is first order, or the two pure phases are separated by an intermediate phase with coexisting SC and SDW orders. For perfect nesting, the two orders do not coexist, because SDW order, which comes first, gaps the full Fermi surface leaving no space for SC to develop. When nesting is not perfect due to either ellipticity of e…
We report synthesis, structural details and magnetization of SmFe1-xCoxAsO with x ranging from 0.0 to 1.0 at close interval of 0.10. It is found that Co substitutes fully at Fe site in SmFeAsO in an iso-structural lattice with slightly compressed cell. The parent compound exhibited known spin density wave (SDW) character below 150K. Successive doping of Co at Fe site suppressed the SDW transition for x = 0.05 and later induced superconductivity for x = 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20 respectively at 14, 15.5 and 9K. The appearance of bulk superconductivity is established by wide open isothermal magnetizat…
We report the Ni-doping effect on magnetism and superconductivity (SC) in an Eu-containing 112-type system Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x})$As$_{2}$ ($0\leq x\leq 0.15$) by the measurements of resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat. The undoped EuFeAs$_2$ undergoes a spin-density-wave (SDW) transition at $T_\mathrm{SDW}\sim$ 105 K in the Fe sublattice and a magnetic ordering at $T_\mathrm{m}\sim$ 40 K in the Eu sublattice. Complex Eu-spin magnetism is manifested by a spin-glass reentrance at $T_\mathrm{SG}\sim$ 15 K and an additional spin reorientation at $T_\mathrm{SR}\sim$ 7 K. With Ni doping, t…
The induction of spin density wave (SDW) and charge density wave (CDW) orderings in the mixed state of high $T_c$ superconductors (HTS) is investigated by using the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations based upon an effective model Hamiltonian with competing SDW and d-wave superconductivity interactions. For optimized doping sample, the modulation of the induced SDW and its associated CDW is determined by the vortex lattice and their patterns obey the four-fold symmetry. By deceasing doping level, both SDW and CDW show quasi-one dimensional like behavior, and the CDW has a period jus…
We study theoretically the coexistence of the spin-density-wave (SDW) and superconductivity in electron-doped iron-pnictide superconductors based on the two orbital model and Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The phase diagram is mapped out and the evolution of the Fermi surface as the doping varies is presented. The local density of states (LDOS) has also been calculated from low to high doping. We show that the strength of the superconducting coherent peak at the positive energy gets enhanced and the one at the negative energy is suppressed by the SDW order in the underdoped region. Several fe…
We studied the effects of isoelectronic Ru substitution at the Fe site on the energy gaps of optimally F-doped SmFeAsO by means of point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy. The results show that the SmFe_{1-x}Ru_{x}AsO_{0.85}F_{0.15} system keeps a multigap character at least up to x=0.50, and that the gap amplitudes Delta_1 and Delta_2 scale almost linearly with the local critical temperature TcA. The gap ratios 2Delta_i/(kB Tc) remain approximately constant only as long as Tc > 30 K, but increase dramatically when Tc decreases further. This trend seems to be common to many Fe-based supe…
Measurements of the specific heat jump at the onset of superconducting transition in the iron-pnictide compounds revealed strong variation of its magnitude as a function of doping that is peaked near the optimal doping. We show that this behavior is direct manifestation of the coexistence between spin-density-wave and superconducting orders and the peak originates from thermal fluctuations of the spin-density-waves near the end point of the coexistence phase -- a tetracritical point. Thermal fluctuations result in a power-law dependence of the specific heat jump that is stronger than the contr…
Single crystalline CaFe2As2 and (Ca1-xNax)Fe2As2 polycrystals (0 < x < 0.66) are synthesized and characterized using structural, magnetic, electronic transport, and heat capacity measurements. These measurements show that the structural/magnetic phase transition in CaFe2As2 at 165 K is monotonically suppressed by the Na doping and that superconductivity can be realized over a wide doping region. For 0.3 < x < 0.36, the magnetic susceptibilities indicate the possible coexistence of the spin density wave (SDW) and superconductivity. Superconducting phases corresponding to the Na doping level in …
We explore if the phase separation or coexistence of the spin density wave (SDW) and superconductivity (SC) states has any relation to the incommensurability of the SDW in the Fe pnictide superconductors. A systematic method of determining the phase separation or coexistence was employed by computing the anisotropy coefficient $β$ from the the 4th order terms of the Ginzburg--Landau (GL) expansion of the free energy close to the tricritical/tetracritical point. It was complemented by the self-consistent numerical iterations of the gap equations to map out the boundaries between the phase separ…
We measured the transport properties and susceptibility of single crystals Ca$_{1-x}$La$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$(x=0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.19 and 0.25). Large in-plane resistivity anisotropy similar to that in Co-doped 122 iron-pnictides is observed although no transition metals were introduced in the FeAs-plane. The in-plane resistivity anisotropy gradually increases with La doping below T$_{SDW}$, being different from the hole-doped 122 superconductors. The susceptibilities of the samples show that La doping leads to suppression of SDW and induces a Curie-Weiss-like behavior at low temperature, which i…
Here we report a new class of superconductors prepared by high pressure synthesis in the quaternary family ReFeAsO1-delta (Re = Sm, Nd, Pr, Ce, La) without fluorine doping. The onset superconducting critical temperature (Tc) in these compounds increases with the reduction of Re atom size, and the highest Tc obtained so far is 55 K in SmFeAsO1-delta. For the NdFeAsO1-delta system with different oxygen concentration a dome-shaped phase diagram was found.
We report bulk superconductivity induced by an isovalent doping of phosphorus in BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$. The P-for-As substitution results in shrinkage of lattice, especially for the FeAs block layers. The resistivity anomaly associated with the spin-density-wave (SDW) transition in the undoped compound is gradually suppressed by the P doping. Superconductivity with the maximum $T_c$ of 30 K emerges at $x$=0.32, coinciding with a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) which is evidenced by the disappearance of SDW order and the linear temperature-dependent resistivity in the normal…
Low-temperature synthesis is a promising and potentially effective method for improving superconducting properties. We report on the fabrication of polycrystalline samples of SmFeAsO1-xFx with nominal x content varying in a wide range of x = 0-0.35 synthesized at 900 deg C. This synthesis temperature is around 300 deg C lower than the conventional synthesis temperature. The variation in the lattice parameters and transition temperature (Tc) of various F-doped samples indicates that reduction of the unit cell volume (V) seems to be the main reason for the rise of Tc up to 57.8 K. Magnetoresista…
Motivated by recent experiments in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ {[}A. E. Böhmer \textit{et al}, to be published{]}, we analyze the type of spin-density wave (SDW) order in doped iron-pnictides and the discontinuities of the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ in the coexistence phase with SDW magnetism. By tracking the magnetic transition line $T_{N}(x)$ towards optimal doping within an itinerant fermionic model, we find a sequence of transitions from the stripe-orthorhombic ($C_{2}$) SDW order to the tetragonal ($C_{4}$) order and then back to the $C_{2}$ order. We argue that …
Recent measurements of the doping dependence of the London penetration depth λ(x) at low temperatures in clean samples of isovalent BaFe_2[As_(1-x)P_x]_2 at T<<Tc [Hashimoto et al., Science 336, 1554 (2012)] revealed a peak in λ(x) near optimal doping x=0.3. The observation of the peak at T<<Tc, points to the existence of the quantum critical point (QCP) beneath the superconducting dome. We associate such a QCP with the onset of a spin- density-wave order and show that the renormalization of λ(x) by critical magnetic fluctuations, gives rise to the observed feature. We argue that the case of p…
Subsequent to our recent report of SDW type transition at 190 K and antiferromagnetic order below 20 K in EuFe2As2, we have studied the effect of K-doping on the SDW transition at high temperature and AF order at low temperature. 50% K doping suppresses the SDW transition and in turn gives rise to high-temperature superconductivity below T_c = 32 K, as observed in the electrical resistivity, AC susceptibility as well as magnetization. A well defined anomaly in the specific heat provides additional evidence for bulk superconductivity.
We performed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements to investigate the evolution of spin-density-wave (SDW) and superconducting (SC) states upon electron doping in CaFe_{1-x}Co_{x}AsF, which exhibits an intermediate phase diagram between those of LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_x and Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2. We found that homogeneous coexistence of the incommensurate SDW and SC states occurs only in a narrow doping region around the crossover regime, which supports S_{+-}-wave symmetry. However, only the structural phase transition survives upon further doping, which agrees with predictions from orbital …
We report Raman scattering measurements on iron-pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with varying cobalt $x$ content. The electronic Raman continuum shows a strong spectral weight redistribution upon entering the magnetic phase induced by the opening of the Spin Density Wave (SDW) gap. It displays two spectral features that weaken with doping, which are assigned to two SDW induced electronic transitions. Raman symmetry arguments are discussed to identify the origin of these electronic transitions in terms of orbital ordering in the magnetic phase. Our data do …
The Bechgaard salts and the high T$_c$ cuprates are described by two and three band models, respectively, with the lowest band (nearly) half filled. In organics the interactions are small, while in cuprates the repulsion $U_d$ on the Cu site is the largest energy. The Mott AF state is stable in undoped materials in both cases. In the metallic phase of cuprates the $U_d\to\infty$ limit produces a moderate effective repulsion. The theories of the coherent SDW and charge-transfer correlations in the metallic phases of organics and cuprates are thus similar. In (undoped) organics those correlation…
We investigate the dual roles of a cobalt impurity in the Ba-122 ferropnictide superconductor in the state with coexisting collinear spin density wave (SDW) order as a dopant and as a scattering center, using first principles electronic structure methods. The Co atom is found to dope the FeAs plane where it is located with a single delocalized electron as expected, but also induces a strong perturbation of the SDW ground state of the system. This in turn induces a stripe-like modulation of the density of states in nearby planes which may be observable in STM experiments. The defect is found to…
Employing the four-band tight-binding model we study theoretically the doping dependence of the spin response in the normal state of novel Fe-based pnictide superconductors. We show that the commensurate spin density wave (SDW) transition that arises due to interband scattering between the hole $α$-pockets and the electron $β$-pockets disappears already at the doping concentration $x \approx 0.04$ reflecting the evolution of the Fermi surfaces. Correspondingly, with further increase of the doping the antiferromagnetic fluctuations are suppressed for $x > 0.1$ and the Im$χ({\bf Q_{AFM}},ω)$ bec…
In the iron-pnictide material CeFeAsO not only the Fe moments, but also the local 4f moments of the Ce order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. We elucidate on the peculiar role of the Ce on the emergence of superconductivity. While application of pressure suppresses the iron SDW ordering temperature monotonously up to 4 GPa, the Ce-4f magnetism is stabilized, until both types of magnetic orders disappear abruptly and a narrow SC dome develops. With further increasing pressure characteristics of a Kondo-lattice system become more and more apparent in the electrical resistivity. This su…

We have performed an isovalent substitution study in a layered titanium oxypnictide system BaTi$_{2}$(Sb$_{1-x}$Bi$_{x}$)$_{2}$O (0$\leq x\leq$ 0.40) by the measurements of x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. The parent compound BaTi$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$O is confirmed to exhibit superconductivity at 1.5 K as well as charge- or spin-density wave (CDW/SDW) ordering below 55 K. With the partial substitution of Sb by Bi, the lattice parameters $a$, $c$ and $c/a$ all increase monotonically, indicating negative chemical pressure and lattice distortion on the (super)conduc…
We present a systematic study on the physical properties of EuFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$ (0$\leq$\emph{x}$\leq$0.2) by electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and thermopower measurements. The undoped compound EuFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ undergoes a spin-density-wave (SDW) transition associated with Fe moments at 195 K, followed by antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ moments at 20 K. Ni doping at the Fe site simultaneously suppresses the SDW transition and AFM ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ moments. For $x\geq$0.06, the magnetic ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ moments evolves from antiferromagnetic to f…
We perform an analytical renormalization group (RG) study to address the role of Coulomb repulsion, the competition between extended s-wave superconducting order (s+-) and the spin-density wave (SDW) order and the angular dependence of the superconducting gap in multi-pocket models of Iron based superconductors. Previous analytic RG studies considered a toy model of one hole and one electron pocket. We consider more realistic models of two electron pockets and either two or three hole pockets, and also incorporate the angular dependence of interaction. We neglect for simplicity one of the two …
57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy measurements are presented in the underdoped Ba(Fe{1-x}Cox)2As2 series for x=0.014 (T_c < 1.4K) and x=0.03 and 0.045 (T_c ~ 2 and 12K respectively). The spectral shapes in the so-called spin-density wave (SDW) phase are interpreted in terms of incommensurate modulation of the magnetic structure, and allow the shape of the modulation to be determined. In undoped BaFe2As2, the magnetic structure is commensurate, and we find that incommensurability is present at the lowest doping level (x=0.014). As Co doping increases, the low temperature modulation progressively lose…
Extensive muon spin relaxation measurements have been performed to determine the magnetic field penetration depth in high-Tc cuprate superconductors with simple hole doping, Zn-doping, overdoping, and formation of static SDW nano islands. System dependence of $n_{s}/m^{*}$ (superconducting carrier density / effective mass) reveals universal correlations between Tc and $n_{s}/m^{*}$ in all these cases with / without perturbation. Evidence for spontaneous and microscopic phase separation was obtained in the cases with strong perturbation, i.e., Zn-doping. overdoping and SDW nano-islands. The len…
The normal-state charge transport is studied systematically in high-quality single crystals of BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.71$). By substituting isovalent P for As, the spin-density-wave (SDW) state is suppressed and the dome-shaped superconducting phase ($T_c \lesssim 31$ K) appears. Near the SDW end point ($x\approx0.3$), we observe striking linear temperature ($T$) dependence of resistivity in a wide $T$-range, and remarkable low-$T$ enhancement of Hall coefficient magnitude from the carrier number estimates. We also find that the magnetoresistance apparently violates th…
Superconductivity up to 30 K in charge neutrally doped BaFe2[As(1-x)P(x)]2 has been ascribed to chemical pressure, caused by the shrinking unit cell. But the latter induces no superconductivity in [Ba(1-x)Sr(x)]Fe2As2 in spite of the same volume range. We show that the spin-density-wave (SDW) state of BaFe2As2 becomes suppressed in BaFe2[As(1-x)P(x)]2 by a subtle reorganization of the crystal structure, where arsenic and phosphorus are located at different coordinates z(As), z(P). High-resolution X-ray diffraction experiments with BaFe2[As(1-x)P(x)]2 single crystals reveal almost unchanged Fe-…
