We report a doping dependent electronic Raman scattering measurements on iron-pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals. A strongly anisotropic gap is found at optimal doping for x=0.065 with $Δ_{max}\sim 5Δ_{min}$. Upon entering the coexistence region between superconducting (SC) and spin-density-wave (SDW) orders, the effective pairing energy scale is strongly reduced. Our results are interpreted in terms of a competition between SC and SDW orders for electronic state at the Fermi level. Our findings advocate for a strong connection between the SC and SDW gaps anisotropies which are both linked to interband interactions.
For an s-wave superconductor/semiconductor/ferromagnetic-insulator structure, the proximity effect can induce the energy gap in the semiconductor rather than the superconducting pair potential of its microscope Hamiltonian. As a result, it is questionable to realize topological superconducting states in that structure.
High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out to study the superconducting gap in the (Ba0.6K0.4)Fe2As2 superconductor with Tc=35 K. Two hole-like Fermi surface sheets around the G(0,0) point exhibit different superconducting gaps. The inner Fermi surface sheet shows larger (10-12 meV) and slightly momentum-dependent gap while the outer one has smaller (7-8 meV) and nearly isotropic gap. The lack of gap node in both Fermi surface sheets favours s-wave superconducting gap symmetry. Superconducting gap opening is also observed at the M(pi,pi) point. The two Ferm…
The power-law temperature dependences of the specific heat, the nuclear relaxation rate, and the thermal conductivity suggest the presence of line nodes in the superconducting gap of Sr2RuO4. These recent experimental observations contradict the scenario of a nodeless (k_x+ik_y)-type superconducting order parameter. We propose that interaction of superconducting order parameters on different sheets of the Fermi surface is a key to understanding the above discrepancy. A full gap exists in the active band, which drives the superconducting instability, while line nodes develop in passive bands by…
We present a study of the anisotropy in the superconducting energy gap in a single crystal of YNi2B2C (Tc~14.6K) using directional point contact spectroscopy. The superconducting energy gap at 2.7K, when measured for I||c, is 4.5 times larger than that for I||a. The energy gaps in the two directions also have different temperature dependences. Our results support a scenario with s+g like symmetry.
Relationship between the superconducting gap and the pseudogap has been the subject of controversies. In order to clarify this issue, we have studied the superconducting gap and pseudogap of the high-Tc superconductor La2-xSrxCuO4 (x=0.10, 0.14) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Through the analysis of the ARPES spectra above and below Tc, we have identified a superconducting coherence peak even in the anti-nodal region on top of the pseudogap of a larger energy scale. The superconducting peak energy nearly follows the pure d-wave form. The d-wave order parameter Δ_0 [defin…
Far-infrared reflectance of a MgB2 film has been measured by Fourier-transform spectroscopy for frequencies 10 cm^{-1}<ν<4000 cm^{-1} above and below the superconducting transition. The data provide clear experimental evidence for the onset of a superconducting gap at 24 cm^{-1} at T=5 K. On increasing temperature the gap energy increases, contrary to what is expected in isotropic BCS superconductors. The small zero-temperature gap value and its unconventional increases on increasing temperature can only be explained by a highly anisotropic or multiple gap function.
The superconducting gap is the fundamental parameter that characterizes the superconducting state, and its symmetry is a direct consequence of the mechanism responsible for Cooper pairing. Here we discuss about angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of the superconducting gap in the Fe-based high-temperature superconductors. We show that the superconducting gap is Fermi surface dependent and nodeless with small anisotropy, or more precisely, a function of momentum. We show that while this observation is inconsistent with weak coupling approaches for superconductivity in these m…
For the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity in inhomogeneous Bi-2212 superconductors, we demonstrate the intrinsic superconducting gap,GAP_i, and pairing symmetry by using a developed GAP=GAP_i/rho, where GAP is the observed energy gap and 0<rho<=1 is band filling. When rho=1, GAP=GAP_i<=10 meV, measured at a node, is intrinsic. When 0<rho<1, GAP implies an averaging of GAP_i over the measurement region, which is the effect of measurement. From analysis's of conductance data, b=2GAP_i/k_BT_c is less than 4 when rho=1 and the density of state indicates s-wave symmetry. The superconducting ga…
We report on the first measurements of thermal conductivity in the superconducting state of (TMTSF)_2ClO_4. The electronic contribution to heat transport is found to decrease rapidly below T_c, indicating the absence of low-energy electronic excitations. We argue that this result provides strong evidence for a nodeless superconducting gap function but does not exclude a possible unconventional order parameter.
We use high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to map the three-dimensional momentum dependence of the superconducting gap in FeSe. We find that on both the hole and electron Fermi surfaces, the magnitude of the gap follows the distribution of $d_{yz}$ orbital weight. Furthermore, we theoretically determine the momentum dependence of the superconducting gap by solving the linearized gap equation using a tight binding model which quantitatively describes both the experimental band dispersions and orbital characters. By considering a Fermi surface only including one electron po…
We show that the superconducting energy gap $Δ$ can be directly observed in phonon spectra, as predicted by recent theories. In addition, since each phonon probes the gap on only a small part of the Fermi surface, the gap anisotropy can be studied in detail. Our neutron scattering investigation of the anisotropic conventional superconductor YNi$_2$B$_2$C demonstrates this new application of phonon spectroscopy.
We report high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) study of nano-sized Pb islands grown on SrTiO3, where three distinct types of gaps with different energy scales are revealed. At low temperature, an enlarged superconducting gap (Δs) emerges while there is no enhancement in superconducting transition temperature (Tc), giving rise to a larger BCS ratio 2Δs/kBTc ~ 6.22. The strong coupling here may originate from the electron-phonon coupling on the metal-oxide interface. As the superconducting gap is suppressed under applied magnetic field or at elevated temperature, Coulomb gap and p…
The phase diagram of the superconducting high-Tc cuprates is governed by two energy scales: T*, the temperature below which a gap is opened in the excitation spectrum, and Tc, the superconducting transition temperature. The way these two energy scales are reflected in the low-temperature energy gap is being intensively debated. Using Zn substitution and carefully controlled annealing we prepared a set of samples having the same T* but different Tc's, and measured their gap using Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES). We show that Tc is not related to the gap shape or size, but it c…
In this work, the concentration and temperature dependences of the superconducting gap of the HTSC cuprate in the orthorhombic phase are obtained within the framework of the Hubbard model taking into account the exchange mechanism of pairing. The enhanced s*-wave component of the superconducting gap against the background of the prevailing d-wave component in a narrow range of hole concentrations in the overdoped region is found. To elucidate the reasons for such unusual behavior the electronic structure of the low-energy excitations and the structure of the contributions of the pair states to…
We have performed an ultrahigh-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of slightly-overdoped (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CuO6 to elucidate the origin of pseudogap. By using a newly developed xenon-plasma light source, we determined the comprehensive momentum and temperature dependences of the superconducting gap and the pseudogap. We found that the antinodal pseudogap persists far above the superconducting transition temperature and is smoothly connected to the nodal gap. The characteristic temperature of the pseudogap scales well with the superconducting-gap size irrespective of the momentu…
We report electronic Raman scattering measurements on optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7 where Zn or Ni impurities have been substituted by Cu. Using Raman selection rules, we have probed the superconducting gap in the nodal and antinodal regions. We show that under impurity substitutions, the energy of the antinodal peak detected in the superconducting state is not related to the critical temperature Tc and that signatures of superconductivity disappear in the nodal regions. Our experimental findings advocate in favor of gapless arcs around the nodes. The breakdown of the relationship between the anti…
Although nodeless superconducting gap has been observed on the large Fermi pockets around the zone corner in KxFe2-ySe2, whether its pairing symmetry is s-wave or nodeless d-wave is still under intense debate. Here we report an isotropic superconducting gap distribution on the small electron Fermi pocket around the Z point in KxFe2-ySe2, which favors the s-wave pairing symmetry.
The superconducting gap - an energy scale tied to the superconducting phenomena-opens on the Fermi surface at the superconducting transition temperature (TC) in conventional BCS superconductors. Quite differently, in underdoped high-TC superconducting cuprates, a pseudogap, whose relation to the superconducting gap remains a mystery, develops well above TC. Whether the pseudogap is a distinct phenomenon or the incoherent continuation of the superconducting gap above TC is one of the central questions in high-TC research. While some experimental evidence suggests they are distinct, this issue i…
Using a realistic ten-orbital tight-binding model Hamiltonian fitted to the angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) data on LiFeAs, we analyze the temperature, frequency, and momentum dependencies of quasiparticle interference (QPI) to identify gap sign changes in a qualitative way, following our original proposal [Phys. Rev. B 92, 184513 (2015)]. We show that all features present for the simple two-band model for the sign-changing $s_{+-}$-wave superconducting gap employed previously are still present in the realistic tight-binding approximation and gap values observed experimentally. We discuss…
We present scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements at 100mK in the superconducting material 2H-NbSe2 that show well defined features in the superconducting density of states changing in a pattern closely following atomic periodicity. Our experiment demonstrates that the intrinsic superconducting density of states can show atomic size modulations, which reflect the reciprocal space structure of the superconducting gap. In particular we obtain that the superconducting gap of 2H-NbSe2 has six fold modulated components at 0.75 mV and 1.2 mV.Moreover, we also find related atomic…
The momentum and temperature dependence of the superconducting gap and pseudogap in optimally-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_6$ superconductor is investigated by super-high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The measured energy gap in the superconducting state exhibits a standard {\it d}-wave form. Pseudogap opens above T$_c$ over a large portion of the Fermi surface with a "Fermi arc" formed near the nodal region. In the region outside of the "Fermi arc", the pseudogap has the similar magnitude and momentum dependence as the gap in the superconducting stat…
High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out to study the electronic structure and superconducting gap of the (Tl$_{0.58}$Rb$_{0.42}$)Fe$_{1.72}$Se$_2$ superconductor with a T$_c$=32 K. The Fermi surface topology consists of two electron-like Fermi surface sheets around $Γ$ point which is distinct from that in all other iron-based compounds reported so far. The Fermi surface around the M point shows a nearly isotropic superconducting gap of $\sim$12 meV. The large Fermi surface near the $Γ$ point also shows a nearly isotropic superconducting gap of $\sim$15 m…
We present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data on moderately underdoped La$_{1.855}$Sr$_{0.145}$CuO$_4$ at temperatures below and above the superconducting transition temperature. Unlike previous studies of this material, we observe sharp spectral peaks along the entire underlying Fermi surface in the superconducting state. These peaks trace out an energy gap that follows a simple {\it d}-wave form, with a maximum superconducting gap of 14 meV. Our results are consistent with a single gap picture for the cuprates. Furthermore our data on the even more underdoped sample La$_{…
Recent excperiments (ARPES, Raman) suggest the presence of two distinct energy gaps in high-Tc superconductors (HTSC), exhibiting different doping dependences. Results of a variational cluster approach to the superconducting state of the two-dimensional Hubbard model are presented which show that this model qualitatively describes this gap dichotomy: One gap (antinodal) increases with less doping, a behavior long considered as reflecting the general gap behavior of the HTSC. On the other hand, the near-nodal gap does even slightly decrease with underdoping. An explanation of this unexpected be…
We present in-plane infrared reflectance measurement on two superconducting cuprates with relatively low T$_c$: a nearly optimally-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ with T$_c$=33 K and an underdoped La$_{1.89}$Sr$_{0.11}$CuO$_4$ with T$_c$=30 K. The measurement clearly reveals that the superconducting energy gap is distinct from the pseudogap. They have different energy scales and appear at different temperatures. The results suggest that the pseudogap is not a precursor to the superconducting state. The data also challenge the longstanding viewpoint that the superconductivity within…
We present measurements of the superconducting gap of URu$_2$Si$_2$ made with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) using a superconducting tip of Al. We find tunneling conductance curves with a finite value at the Fermi level. The density of states is V shaped at low energies, and the quasiparticle peaks are located at values close to the expected superconducting gap from weak coupling BCS theory. Our results point to rather opened gap structures and gap nodes on the Fermi surface.
We report measurements of the London penetration depth [$Δλ(T)$] of the recently discovered iron-based superconductor (Li$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)OHFeSe, in order to characterize the nature of the superconducting gap structure. At low temperatures, $Δλ(T)$ displays nearly temperature independent behavior, indicating a fully open superconducting gap. We also analyze the superfluid density $ρ_s(T)$ which cannot be well accounted for by a single-gap isotropic $s$-wave model but are consistent with either two-gaps, a model for the orbital selective $s\timesτ_3$ state or anisotropic $s$-wave superconductivit…
The clearly resolved bilayer splitting in ARPES spectra of the underdoped Pb-Bi2212 compound rises the question of how the bonding and antibonding sheets of the Fermi surface are gapped in the superconducting state. Here we compare the superconducting gaps for both split components and show that within the experimental uncertainties they are identical. By tuning the relative intensity of the bonding and antibonding bands using different excitation conditions we determine the precise {\bf k}-dependence of the leading edge gap. Significant deviations from the simple cos($k_{x}$)-cos($k_{y}$) gap…
We use the numerical renormalization group method (NRG) to investigate a single-impurity Anderson model with a coupling of the impurity to a superconducting host. Analysis of the energy flow shows, in contrast to previous belief, that NRG iterations can be performed up to a large number of sites, corresponding to energy differences far below the superconducting gap. This allows us to calculate the impurity spectral function very accurately for frequencies near the gap edge, and to resolve, in a certain parameter regime, sharp peaks in the spectral function close to the gap edge.
The crossover from superconducting gap to pseudogap is considered. We show that the superconductivity is destroyed at the temperature $T_c$, with the superconducting gap being smoothly transformed into the pseudogap. Relations, which are of general interest, between the maximum values of the gap $Δ_1$, $T_c$ and $T^*$ are established. We presents arguments that $T^*$ as a function of the doping level $x$ is approximately a straight line that crosses the abscissa at some point $x_{FC}$. In the vicinity of this point $T^*$ coincides with $T_c$, and at $x=x_{FC}$ the fermion condensation quantum …
When passing through a phase transition, electronic system saves energy by opening energy gaps at the Fermi level. Delineating the energy gap anisotropy provides insights into the origin of the interactions that drive the phase transition. Here, we report the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study on the detailed gap anisotropies in both the tetragonal magnetic and superconducting phases in Sr$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$. First, we found that the spin-density-wave (SDW) gap is strongly anisotropic in the tetragonal magnetic phase. The gap magnitude correlates with the orbital ch…
We report high-resolution spectra of the second derivative -d^{2}(ReΣ)/dω^{2} of the real part of electron self-energy Σalong the diagonal direction (where ω= E_{F}-E - Δ_{D} and Δ_{D} is the diagonal superconducting gap) for a nonsuperconducting La_{1.97}Sr_{0.03}CuO_{4} (LSCO) crystal and a superconducting Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+y} (BSCCO) crystal with T_{c} = 91 K. The -d^{2}(ReΣ)/dω^{2} spectrum of the nonsuperconducting LSCO shows clear peak features, which match precisely with those in the phonon density of states obtained from neutron scattering. Similarly, if we assign Δ_{D} = 7\pm1 …
Its direct momentum sensitivity confers to angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) a unique perspective in investigating the superconducting gap of multi-band systems. In this review we discuss ARPES studies on the superconducting gap of the high-temperature Fe-based superconductors. We show that while Fermi-surface-driven pairing mechanisms fail to provide a universal scheme for the Fe-based superconductors, theoretical approaches based on short-range interactions lead to a more robust and universal description of superconductivity in these materials. Our findings are also discussed…
Recent superconducting gap classifications based on space group symmetry have revealed nontrivial gap structures that were not shown by point group symmetry. First, we review a comprehensive classification of symmetry-protected line nodes within the range of centrosymmetric space groups. Next, we show an additional constraint; line nodes peculiar to nonsymmorphic systems appear only for primitive or orthorhombic base-centered Bravais lattice. Then, we list useful classification tables of 59 primitive or orthorhombic base-centered space groups for the superconducting gap structures. Furthermore…
We theoretically explore the possibility of a superconducting proximity effect in single-walled metallic carbon nanotubes due to the presence of a superconducting substrate. An unconventional double-gap situation can arise in the two bands for nanotubes of large radius wherein the tunneling is (almost) symmetric in the two sublattices. In such a case, a proximity effect can take place in the symmetric band below a critical experimentally-accessible Coulomb interaction strength in the nanotube. Furthermore, due to interactions in the nanotube, the appearance of a BCS gap in this band stabilizes…
Phase-sensitive measurements of the superconducting gap in Fe-based superconductors have proven more difficult than originally anticipated. While quasiparticle interference (QPI) measurements based on scanning tunneling spectroscopy are often proposed as defnitive tests of gap structure, the analysis typically relies on details of the model employed. Here we point out that the temperature dependence of momentum-integrated QPI data can be used to identify gap sign changes in a qualitative way, and present an illustration for $s_{\pm}$ and $s_{++}$ states in a system with typical Fe-pnictide Fer…
We perform a theoretical study of the effects of electronic correlations on the superconducting gap structure of multi-band superconductors. In particular, by comparing standard RPA-based spin-fluctuation mediated gap structures to those obtained within the FLEX formalism for an iron-based superconductor, we obtain directly the feedback effects from electron-electron interactions on the momentum-space gap structure. We show how self-energy effects can lead to an orbital inversion of the orbital-resolved spin susceptibility, and thereby invert the hierarchy of the most important orbitals channe…
Thermal conductivity measurements in the superconducting state of the ferromagnet UCoGe were performed at very low temperatures and under magnetic field on samples of different qualities and with the heat current along the three crystallographic axis. This allows to disentangle intrinsic and extrinsic effects, confirm the situation of multigap superconductivity and shed new light on the situation expected or claimed for the gap in these ferromagnetic superconductors, like evidences of absence of "partially gapped" Fermi surfaces.
We discuss the possibility that the strain field introduced by the structural supermodulation in Bi-2212 and certain other cuprate materials may modulate the superconducting pairing interaction. We calculate the amplitude of this effect, visible in scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments, and thereby relate a change in the local superconducting gap with the change in the local dopant displacements induced by the supermodulation. In principle, since this modulation is periodic, sufficiently accurate x-ray measurements or ab initio calculations should enable one to determine which atomic dis…
Fermi surface topology and pairing symmetry are two pivotal characteristics of a superconductor. Superconductivity in one monolayer (1ML) FeSe thin film has attracted great interest recently due to its intriguing interfacial properties and possibly high superconducting transition temperature (Tc) over 77 K. Here, we report high-resolution measurements of the Fermi surface and superconducting gaps in 1ML FeSe using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Two ellipse-like electron pockets are clearly resolved overlapping with each other at the Brillouin zone corner. The superconductin…
Pairing symmetry which characterizes the superconducting pairing mechanism is normally determined by measuring the superconducting gap structure ($|Δ_k|$). Here, we report the measurement of a strain-induced gap modulation ($\partial|Δ_k|$) in uniaxially strained Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and $in$-$situ$ strain-tuning. We found that the uniaxial strain drives Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ into a nematic superconducting state which breaks the four-fold rotational symmetry of the superconducting pairing. The superconducting gap increase…
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the archetypical electron-doped material Nd{1.85}Ce{0.15}CuO4 up to high relative magnetic field strength, H/Hc2 ~ 50%, reveal a simple linear magnetic-field effect on the superconducting magnetic gap and the absence of field-induced in-gap states. The extrapolated gap-closing field value is consistent with the upper critical field Hc2, and the high-field response resembles that of the paramagnetic normal state.
We present results of in field directional point contact spectroscopy (DPCS) study in the quaternary borocarbide superconductor YNi2B2C, which is characterized by a highly anisotropic superconducting gap function. For I||a, the superconducting energy gap (D), decreases linearly with magnetic field and vanishes around 3.25T which is well below the upper critical field (Hc2~6T) measured at the same temperature (2.2K). For I||c, on the other hand, D decreases weakly with magnetic field but the broadening parameter (G) increases rapidly with magnetic field with the absence of any resolvable featur…
The electronic structure of cuprate superconductors is studied within the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism in the presence of the out-of-plane impurities. With increasing the impurity concentration, although both superconducting coherence peaks around nodal and antinodal regions are suppressed, the position of the leading-edge mid-point of the electron spectrum around the nodal region remains at the same position, while it is shifted towards higher binding energies around the antinodal region, this leads to a strong deviation from the monotonic d-wave superconducting gap in the …
We report a distinct experimental approach to point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy with diagnostic capability via a unique design of nano-scale normal metal/superconductor devices with excellent thermo-mechanical stability, and have employed this method to unveil the existence of two superconducting energy gaps in iron chalcogenide Fe1+yTe1-xSex which is crucial for understanding its pairing mechanism. This work opens up new opportunities to study gap structures in superconductors and elemental excitations in solids.
The in-plane thermal conductivity $κ$ of overdoped FeAs-based superconductor BaFe$_{1.73}$Co$_{0.27}$As$_2$ ($T_c$ = 8.1 K) single crystal was measured down to 80 mK. In zero field, the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is negligible, suggesting a nodeless superconducting gap in the $ab$-plane. In magnetic field, $κ_0/T$ increases rapidly, very different from that of conventional s-wave superconductors. This anomalous $κ_0/T(H)$ may reveal an exotic superconducting gap structure in overdoped BaFe$_{1.73}$Co$_{0.27}$As$_2$: the vanishing hole ($β$) pocket has a much larger gap than the electron ($γ$…
How out-of-plane disorder affects the electronic structure has been investigated for the single-layer cuprates Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$$Ln$$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ ($Ln$ = La, Nd, Gd) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We have observed that, with increasing disorder, while the Fermi surface shape and band dispersions are not affected, the quasi-particle width increases, the anti-nodal gap is enhanced and the superconducting gap in the nodal region is depressed. The results indicate that the superconductivity is significantly depressed by out-of-plane disorder through the enhancement of the anti-…
We have obtained strong experimental evidence for the full determination of the superconducting gap structure in all three bands of the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 for the first time. We have extended the measurements of the field-orientation dependent specific heat to include conical field rotations consisting of in-plane azimuthal angle phi-sweeps at various polar angles theta performed down to 0.1 K. Clear 4-fold oscillations of the specific heat and a rapid suppression of it by changing theta are explained only by a compensation from two types of bands with anti-phase gap anisotrop…
Motivated by the recently discovered time-reversal symmetry-breaking superconductivity in epitaxial Bi/Ni bilayer system with transition temperature $T_c\approx 4.2$K and the observation of zero-bias anomaly in tunneling measurements, we show that gap-filling states can appear in the fully gapped $d_{xy}\pm id_{x^2-y^2}$ superconducting states. We consider a model of helical electron states with d-wave pairing. In particular, we show that both magnetic and non-magnetic impurities can create states within the superconducting gap. Alternatively, we also show that the coupling of the electron spi…
The order parameter and pairing mechanism for superconductivity in heavy fermion compounds are still poorly understood. Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy at ultra-low temperatures can yield important information about the superconducting order parameter and the gap structure. Here, we study the first heavy fermion superconductor, CeCu_2Si_2. Our data show the superconducting gap which is not fully formed and exhibits features that point to a multi-gap order parameter. Spatial mapping of the zero bias conductance in magnetic field reveals the vortex lattice, which allows us to uneq…
We used high-energy resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to extract the momentum dependence of the superconducting gap of Ru-substituted Ba(Fe$_{0.75}$Ru$_{0.25}$)$_2$As$_2$ ($T_c = 15$ K). Despite a strong out-of-plane warping of the Fermi surface, the magnitude of the superconducting gap observed experimentally is nearly isotropic and independent of the out-of-plane momentum. More precisely, we respectively observed 5.7 meV and 4.5 meV superconducting gaps on the inner and outer $Γ$-centered hole Fermi surface pockets, whereas a 4.8 meV gap is recorded on the M-centered elect…
We have performed ultrahigh-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to directly observe the large superconducting (SC) gap anisotropy (GA) of YNi2B2C. The result shows large SC GA with a smooth variation along an intersection of a Fermi surface (FS) around the $Γ$-Z line and nearly isotropic SC gap values for two intersections of FSs around the X-P line but with a point-like non-zero minimum only for one sheet. The point-like SC gap minimum can be connected by the nesting vector reported from band calculations. The results show unexpectedly complicated SC GA of borocarbide superco…
The existence of a normal state spectral gap in underdoped cuprates raises important questions about the associated superconducting phase. For example, how does this pseudogap evolve into its below Tc counterpart? In this paper we characterize this unusual superconductor by investigating the nature of the ``residual'' pseudogap below Tc and, find that it leads to an important distinction between the superconducting excitation gap and order parameter. Our approach is based on a conserving diagrammatic BCS Bose-Einstein crossover theory which yields the precise BCS result in weak coupling at any…
The thermal conductivity of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 has been studied in a magnetic field rotating within the 2D planes. A clear fourfold symmetry of the thermal conductivity which is characteristic of a superconducting gap with nodes along the (+-pi,+-pi)-directions is resolved. The thermal conductivity measurement also reveals a first order transition at H_c2, indicating a Pauli limited superconducting state. These results indicate that the symmetry most likely belongs to d_{x^2-y^2}, implying that the anisotropic antiferromagnetic fluctuation is relevant to the superconduct…
The in-plane thermal conductivity of iron-based superconductor Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_{4-δ}$As$_8$)((Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$)$_5$ single crystal (``10-4-8", $T_c$ = 22 K) was measured down to 80 mK. In zero field, the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is negligible, suggesting nodeless superconducting gaps in this multiband compound. In magnetic fields, $κ_0/T$ increases rapidly, which mimics those of multiband superconductor NbSe$_2$ and LuNi$_2$B$_2$C with highly anisotropic gap. Such a field dependence of $κ_0/T$ is an evidence for multiple superconducting gaps with quite different magnitudes or hi…
The precise momentum dependence of the superconducting gap in the iron-arsenide superconductor with Tc = 32K (BKFA) was determined from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) via fitting the distribution of the quasiparticle density to a model. The model incorporates finite lifetime and experimental resolution effects, as well as accounts for peculiarities of BKFA electronic structure. We have found that the value of the superconducting gap is practically the same for the inner Gamma-barrel, X-pocket, and "blade"-pocket, and equals 9 meV, while the gap on the outer Gamma-barrel is e…
Based on an effective 12-orbital tight-binding model, we examine the superconducting states induced by the antiferromagnetic fluctuations for iron-vacancy-ordered A$_{y}$Fe$_{2-x}$Se$_{2}$. It is shown that due to the broken reflection symmetry induced by the iron vacancies, new superconducting states with $C_{4h}$ symmetry emerge. In particular, we show that in the $C_{4h}$ symmetry, symmetric axes of the pairing momenta do not need to coincide with axes of the unit cell. As a result, in addition to the magnitude of the pairing gap, the relative orientation of the pairing wave function to the…
FeSe exhibits a novel ground state in which superconductivity coexists with a nematic order in the absence of any long-range magnetic order. Here we report an angle-resolved photoemission study on the superconducting gap structure in the nematic state of FeSe$_{0.93}$S$_{0.07}$, without the complication caused by Fermi surface reconstruction induced by magnetic order. We found that the superconducting gap shows a pronounced 2-fold anisotropy around the elliptical hole pocket near the Z point of the Brillouin zone, with gap minima at the endpoints of its major axis, while no detectable gap was …
Transverse-field muon spin relaxation rates in single crystals of the heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs4Sb12 (Tc = 1.85 K) are nearly constant in the vortex state for temperatures below ~0.5Tc. This suggests that the superconducting penetration depth lambda(T) is temperature-independent at low temperatures, consistent with a gapped quasiparticle excitation spectrum. In contrast, radiofrequency measurements yield a stronger temperature dependence of lambda(T), indicative of point nodes in the gap. A similar discrepancy exists in superconducting Sr2RuO4 which, like PrOs4Sb12, breaks time-reversa…
