High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out to study the superconducting gap in the (Ba0.6K0.4)Fe2As2 superconductor with Tc=35 K. Two hole-like Fermi surface sheets around the G(0,0) point exhibit different superconducting gaps. The inner Fermi surface sheet shows larger (10-12 meV) and slightly momentum-dependent gap while the outer one has smaller (7-8 meV) and nearly isotropic gap. The lack of gap node in both Fermi surface sheets favours s-wave superconducting gap symmetry. Superconducting gap opening is also observed at the M(pi,pi) point. The two Fermi surface spots near the M point are gapped below Tc but the gap persists above Tc. The rich and detailed superconducting gap information will provide key insights and constraints in understanding pairing mechanism in the iron-based superconductors.
Intrinsic Electronic Structure and Nodeless Superconducting Gap of $\mathrm{YBa_{2} Cu_{3} O_{7-δ} }$ Observed by Spatially-Resolved Laser-Based Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy
Although nodeless superconducting gap has been observed on the large Fermi pockets around the zone corner in KxFe2-ySe2, whether its pairing symmetry is s-wave or nodeless d-wave is still under intense debate. Here we report an isotropic superconducting gap distribution on the small electron Fermi pocket around the Z point in KxFe2-ySe2, which favors the s-wave pairing symmetry.
The in-plane thermal conductivity of iron-based superconductor Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_{4-δ}$As$_8$)((Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$)$_5$ single crystal (``10-4-8", $T_c$ = 22 K) was measured down to 80 mK. In zero field, the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is negligible, suggesting nodeless superconducting gaps in this multiband compound. In magnetic fields, $κ_0/T$ increases rapidly, which mimics those of multiband superconductor NbSe$_2$ and LuNi$_2$B$_2$C with highly anisotropic gap. Such a field dependence of $κ_0/T$ is an evidence for multiple superconducting gaps with quite different magnitudes or hi…
We carried out high resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on the electronic structure and superconducting gap of K_0.68Fe_1.79Se_2 (T_c=32 K) and (Tl_0.45K_0.34)Fe_1.84Se_2 (T_c=28 K) superconductors. In addition to the electron-like Fermi surface near M(π,π), two electron-like Fermi pockets are revealed around the zone center Γ(0,0) in K0.68Fe1.79Se_2. This observation makes the Fermi surface topology of K_0.68Fe_1.79Se_2 consistent with that of (Tl,Rb)_xFe_{2-y}Se_2 and (Tl,K)_xFe_{2-y}Se_2 compounds. A nearly isotropic superconducting gap (Δ) is observed along the electron-li…
The optical properties of the new iron-based superconductor CsCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ with $T_c \sim 29$~K have been determined. In the normal state a good description of the low-frequency response is obtained with a superposition of two Drude components of which one has a very low scattering rate (narrow Drude-peak) and the other a rather large one (broad Drude-peak). Well below $T_c \sim 29$~K, a pronounced gap feature is observed which involves a complete suppression of the optical conductivity below $\sim$ 110~cm$^{-1}$ and thus is characteristic of a nodeless superconducting state. The op…
The in-plane thermal conductivity $κ$ of overdoped FeAs-based superconductor BaFe$_{1.73}$Co$_{0.27}$As$_2$ ($T_c$ = 8.1 K) single crystal was measured down to 80 mK. In zero field, the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is negligible, suggesting a nodeless superconducting gap in the $ab$-plane. In magnetic field, $κ_0/T$ increases rapidly, very different from that of conventional s-wave superconductors. This anomalous $κ_0/T(H)$ may reveal an exotic superconducting gap structure in overdoped BaFe$_{1.73}$Co$_{0.27}$As$_2$: the vanishing hole ($β$) pocket has a much larger gap than the electron ($γ$…
The superconducting compound, LiFeAs, is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. A gap map of the unreconstructed surface indicates a high degree of homogeneity in this system. Spectra at 2 K show two nodeless superconducting gaps with $Δ_1=5.3\pm0.1$ meV and $Δ_2=2.5\pm0.2$ meV. The gaps close as the temperature is increased to the bulk $T_c$ indicating that the surface accurately represents the bulk. A dip-hump structure is observed below $T_c$ with an energy scale consistent with a magnetic resonance recently reported by inelastic neutron scattering.
Low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements were performed on single crystal of PbTaSe$_2$, a noncentrosymmetric superconductor with topological bulk nodal lines in the electronic band structure. It is found that the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is negligible in zero magnetic field. Furthermore, the field dependence of $κ_0/T$ exhibits a clear "$S$"-shape curve. These results suggest that PbTaSe$_2$ has multiple nodeless superconducting gaps. Therefore, the spin-triplet state with gap nodes does not play an important role in this noncentrosymmetric superconductor with strong spin-orbital…
We present the first study of thermal conductivity in superconducting SrTi$_{1-x}$Nb$_{x}$O$_{3}$, sufficiently doped to be near its maximum critical temperature. The bulk critical temperature, determined by the jump in specific heat, occurs at a significantly lower temperature than the resistive T$_{c}$. Thermal conductivity, dominated by the electron contribution, deviates from its normal-state magnitude at bulk T$_{c}$, following a Bardeen-Rickayzen-Tewordt (BRT) behavior, expected for thermal transport by Bogoliubov excitations. Absence of a T-linear term at very low temperatures rules out…
Using angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES), it is revealed that the low-energy electronic excitation spectra of highly underdoped superconducting and non-superconducting La(2-x)SrxCuO4 cuprates are gapped along the entire underlying Fermi surface at low temperatures. We show how the gap function evolves to a d(x2-y2) form as increasing temperature or doping, consistent with the vast majority of ARPES studies of cuprates. Our results provide essential information for uncovering the symmetry of the order parameter(s) in strongly underdoped cuprates, which is a prerequisite for understanding the …
The thermal conductivity of optimally doped NaFe$_{0.972}$Co$_{0.028}$As ($T_c \sim$ 20 K) and overdoped NaFe$_{0.925}$Co$_{0.075}$As ($T_c \sim$ 11 K) single crystals were measured down to 50 mK. No residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is found in zero magnetic field for both compounds, which is an evidence for nodeless superconducting gap. Applying field up to $H$ = 9 T ($\approx H_{c2}/4$) does not noticeably increase $κ_0/T$ in NaFe$_{1.972}$Co$_{0.028}$As, which is consistent with multiple isotropic gaps with similar magnitudes. The $κ_0/T$ of overdoped NaFe$_{1.925}$Co$_{0.075}$As shows a relati…
We report $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance studies on a very clean hole-doped single-crystal Ba$_{0.68}$K$_{0.32}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($T_{\rm {c}}=38.5$ K). The spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ shows an exponential decrease below $T \simeq 0.45 T_{\rm c}$ down to $T \simeq 0.11 T_{\rm c}$, which indicates a fully opened energy gap. From the ratio $(T_{1})_{c} / (T_{1})_{a}$, where $a$ and $c$ denote the crystal directions, we find that the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation is anisotropic in the spin space above $T_{\rm c}$. The anisotropy decreases below $T_{\rm c}$ and disappears at …
The in-plane thermal conductivity $κ$ of electron-doped iron-arsenide superconductor BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_2$ ($T_c$ = 20.3 K) single crystal was measured down to 70 mK. In zero field, the absence of a residual linear term $κ_0/T$ at $ T \to 0$ is strong evidence for nodeless superconducting gap. In magnetic field, $κ_0/T$ shows a slow field dependence up to $H$ = 14.5 T ($\approx$ 30% $H_{c_2}$). This is consistent with the superconducting gap structure demonstrated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments in BaFe$_{1.85}$Co$_{0.15}$As$_2$ ($T_c$ = 25.5 K), where isotropic…
The recent discovery of superconductivity in iron-arsenic compounds below a transition temperature (Tc) as high as 55K ended the monopoly of copper oxides (cuprates) in the family of high-Tc superconductors. A critical issue in understanding this new superconductor, as in the case of cuprates, is the nature, in particular the symmetry and orbital dependence, of the superconducting gap. There are conflicting experimental results, mostly from indirect measurements of the low energy excitation gap, ranging from one gap to two gaps, from line nodes to nodeless gap function in momentum space. Here …
Pairing in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors and its origin remain among the most enduring mysteries in condensed matter physics. With cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy/ spectroscopy, we clearly reveal the spatial-dependence or inhomogeneity of the superconducting gap structure of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ (YBCO) along their $c$-axes on a scale shorter than the interlayer spacing. By tunneling into the (100) plane of a Bi2212 single crystal and a YBCO film, we observe both U-shaped tunneling spectra with extended flat zero-conducta…
Low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements were performed on single crystals of TlNi$_2$Se$_2$, a nickel-chalcogenide heavy-electron superconductor with $T_c$ $\simeq$ 3.7 K. In zero field, the residual electronic contribution at $T$ $\rightarrow$ 0 K ($κ_0/T$) was well separated from the total thermal conductivity, which is less than 0.45\% of its normal-state value. Such a tiny residual $κ_0/T$ is unlikely contributed by the nodal quasiparticles. Nodeless gap structure is supported by the very weak field dependence of $κ_0(H)/T$ in low magnetic fields. In the whole field range, $κ_0(H…
Point-contact Andreev-reflection measurements were performed in SmFeAsO_{0.8}F_{0.2} polycrystals with T_c \simeq 53 K. The experimental conductance curves reproducibly exhibit peaks around \pm 6 mV and shoulders at V \sim 16-20 mV, indicating the presence of two nodeless superconducting gaps. While the single-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk fit can only reproduce a small central portion of the conductance curve, the two-gap one accounts remarkably well for the shape of the whole experimental dI/dV. The fits of the normalized curves give Delta_1(0) = 6.15 \pm 0.45 meV and Delta_2(0) = 18 \pm 3 m…
Angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) data from the electron doped cuprate superconductor Sm$_{1.86}$Ce$_{0.14}$CuO$_4$ shows a much stronger pseudo-gap or "hot-spot" effect than that observed in other optimally doped $n$-type cuprates. Importantly, these effects are strong enough to drive the zone-diagonal states below the chemical potential, implying that d-wave superconductivity in this compound would be of a novel "nodeless" gap variety. The gross features of the Fermi surface topology and low energy electronic structure are found to be well described by reconstruction of bands by a $\sqrt{…
The interplay of nontrivial topology and superconductivity in condensed matter physics gives rise to exotic phenomena. However, materials are extremely rare where it is possible to explore the full details of the superconducting pairing. Here, we investigate the momentum dependence of the superconducting gap distribution in a novel Dirac material PdTe. Using high resolution, low temperature photoemission spectroscopy, we establish it as a spin-orbit coupled Dirac semimetal with the topological Fermi arc crossing the Fermi level on the (010) surface. This spin-textured surface state exhibits a …
The ThIrSi superconductor, with $T_c = 6.5$ K, is expected to show unusual features in view of its noncentrosymmetric structure and the presence of heavy elements featuring a sizable spin-orbit coupling. Here, we report a comprehensive study of its electronic properties by means of local-probe techniques: muon-spin rotation and relaxation ({\textmu}SR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Both the superfluid density $ρ_\mathrm{sc}(T)$ (determined via transverse-field {\textmu}SR) and the spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}(T)$ (determined via NMR) suggest a nodeless superconductivity. Furt…
High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out to study the electronic structure and superconducting gap of the (Tl$_{0.58}$Rb$_{0.42}$)Fe$_{1.72}$Se$_2$ superconductor with a T$_c$=32 K. The Fermi surface topology consists of two electron-like Fermi surface sheets around $Γ$ point which is distinct from that in all other iron-based compounds reported so far. The Fermi surface around the M point shows a nearly isotropic superconducting gap of $\sim$12 meV. The large Fermi surface near the $Γ$ point also shows a nearly isotropic superconducting gap of $\sim$15 m…
A deep understanding of the character of superconductivity in the recently discovered Fe-based oxypnictides ReFeAsO1-xFx (Re = rare-earth) necessarily requires the determination of the number of the gaps and their symmetry in k space, which are fundamental ingredients of any model for the pairing mechanism in these new superconductors. In the present paper, we show that point-contact Andreev-reflection experiments performed on LaFeAsO1-xFx (La-1111) polycrystals with Tc ~ 27 K and SmFeAsO0.8F0.2 (Sm-1111) ones with Tc ~ 53 K gave differential conductance curves exhibiting two peaks at low bias…
The coexisting regime of spin density wave (SDW) and superconductivity in the iron pnictides represents a novel ground state. We have performed high resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on NaFe1-xCoxAs (x = 0.0175) in this regime and revealed its distinctive electronic structure, which provides some microscopic understandings of its behavior. The SDW signature and the superconducting gap are observed on the same bands, illustrating the intrinsic nature of the coexistence. However, because the SDW and superconductivity are manifested in different parts of the band structure, the…
The superconducting gap is the fundamental parameter that characterizes the superconducting state, and its symmetry is a direct consequence of the mechanism responsible for Cooper pairing. Here we discuss about angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of the superconducting gap in the Fe-based high-temperature superconductors. We show that the superconducting gap is Fermi surface dependent and nodeless with small anisotropy, or more precisely, a function of momentum. We show that while this observation is inconsistent with weak coupling approaches for superconductivity in these m…
Recently it was found that selenium doping can suppress the charge-density-wave (CDW) order and induce bulk superconductivity in ZrTe$_3$. The observed superconducting dome suggests the existence of a CDW quantum critical point (QCP) in ZrTe$_{3-x}$Se$_x$ near $x \approx$ 0.04. To elucidate its superconducting state near the CDW QCP, we measure the thermal conductivity of two ZrTe$_{3-x}$Se$_x$ single crystals ($x$ = 0.044 and 0.051) down to 80 mK. For both samples, the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ at zero field is negligible, which is a clear evidence for nodeless superconducting gap. Further…
In BiS$_2$-based layered superconductors, the existence of gap nodes on Fermi-surface curves has been suggested from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, whereas the conventional $s$-wave gap has been proposed from measurements of superfluid density and thermal conductivity. To reconcile these two distinct experimental results of the gap node, we investigate nonmagnetic impurity effects in the superconductor with a disconnected pocketlike Fermi-surface structure. Then, we claim that the seemingly contradictory situation concerning the gap node is resolved by a concept of dirt…
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the overdoped Ba$_{0.3}$K$_{0.7}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ superconductor ($T_c$ = 22 K). We demonstrate that the superconducting (SC) gap on each Fermi surface (FS) is nearly isotropic whereas the gap value varies from 4.4 to 7.9 meV on different FSs. By comparing with under- and optimally-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$, we find that the gap value on each FS nearly scales with $T_c$ over a wide doping range (0.25 $\textyen leq$ $x$ $\textyen leq$ 0.7). Although the FS volume and the SC gap magnitude are strongly doping dependent, the multip…
Low energy electronic structure of optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7-d is investigated using laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The surface state and the CuO chain band that usually overlap the CuO2 plane derived bands are not detected, thus enabling a clear observation of the bulk superconducting state. The observed bilayer splitting of the Fermi surface is ~0.08 angstrom^{-1} along the (0,0)-(pi,pi) direction, significantly larger than Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d. The kink structure of the band dispersion reflecting the renormalization effect at ~60 meV shows up similarly as in other hole-…
We performed a high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the Tl$_{0.63}$K$_{0.37}$Fe$_{1.78}$Se$_2$ superconductor ($T_c=29$ K). We show the existence of two electronlike bands at the M$(π, 0)$ point which cross the Fermi level at similar Fermi wave vectors to form nearly circular electronlike Fermi surface pockets. We observe a nearly isotropic $\sim$ 8.5 meV superconducting gap ($Δ/k_BT_c\sim 7$) on these Fermi surfaces. Our analysis of the band structure around the Brillouin zone centre reveals two additional electronlike Fermi surfaces: a very small one and a large…
Recently, a new family of iron-based superconductors called 12442 was discovered and the muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements on KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ and CsCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ polycrystals, two members of the family, indicated that both have a nodal superconducting gap structure with $s+d$ pairing symmetry. Here we report the ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity measurements on CsCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ single crystals ($T_c$ = 29.3 K). A negligible residual linear term $κ_0/T$ in zero field and the field dependence of $κ_0/T$ suggest multiple nodeless superconducting gaps in…
The nodal $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconducting gap is a hallmark of the cuprate high T$_c$ superconductors. Surprisingly recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of deeply underdoped cuprates revealed a nodeless energy gap which is adhered to the Fermi surface. Importantly this phenomenon is observed for compounds across several different cuprate families. In this letter we propose an exciting possibility, namely the fully gapped state is a topological superconductor.
The symmetry of the order parameter in iron-based superconductors, especially the presence or absence of nodes, is still a question of debate. While contradictory experiments can be explained by appropriately tuned theories of nodeless superconductivity in the iron-arsenide compounds, for LaOFeP all experiments clearly point to a nodal order parameter. We put forward a scenario that naturally explains the difference between the order-parameter character in these two sets of compounds, and use functional renormalization group (fRG) techniques to analyze it in detail. Our results show that, due …
We report an investigation of the superconducting states of $\mathrm{Lu}_3\mathrm{Os}_4\mathrm{Ge}_{13}$ and $\mathrm{Y}_3\mathrm{Ru}_4\mathrm{Ge}_{13}$ single crystals by measurements of the electrical resistivity, ac susceptibility and London penetration depth. The analysis of the penetration depth and the derived superfluid density indicates the presence of nodeless superconductivity and suggest that there are multiple superconducting gaps in both materials. Furthermore, ac susceptibility measurements of both compounds display the peak effect in the low temperature region of the $H-T$ phase…
Both electronic Raman scattering (ERS) and angle-resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) revealed two energy scales for the gap in different momentum spaces in the cuprates. However, the interpretations were different, and the gap values were also different in two experiments. In order to clarify the origin of these discrepancies, we directly compared ERS and ARPES by calculating ERS from the experimental data of ARPES through the Kubo formula. The calculated ERS spectra were in good agreement with the experimental results except for the B$_{1g}$ peak energies. The doping-dependent B$_{2g}$ pea…
We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on Fe-based superconductor LiFeAs (Tc = 18 K). We reveal multiple nodeless superconducting (SC) gaps with 2D/kBTc ratios varying from 2.8 to 6.4, depending on the Fermi surface (FS). We also succeeded in directly observing a gap anisotropy along the FS with magnitude up to ~30 %. The anisotropy is four-fold symmetric with an antiphase between the hole and electron FSs, suggesting complex anisotropic interactions for the SC pairing. The observed momentum dependence of the SC gap offers an excellent opportunity to invest…
Recent observations of two nodeless gaps in superconducting CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ have raised intensive debates on its exact gap symmetry, while a satisfactory theoretical basis is still lacking. Here we propose a phenomenological approach to calculate the superconducting gap functions, taking into consideration both the realistic Fermi surface topology and the intra- and interband quantum critical scatterings. Our calculations yield a nodeless $s^\pm$-wave solution in the presence of strong interband pairing interaction, in good agreement with experiments. This provides a possible basis for understa…
We report 75As-nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies on (Ca_4Al_2O_{6-y})(Fe_2As_2) with Tc=27K, which unravel unique normal-state properties and point to unconventional nodeless superconductivity (SC). Measurement of nuclear-spin-relaxation rate 1/T_1 has revealed a significant development of two dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations down to Tc, in association with the fact that FeAs layers with the smallest As-Fe-As bond angle are well separated by thick perovskite-type blocking layer. Below Tc, the temperature dependence of 1/T_1 without any trace of the coherence …
Using two experimental techniques, we studied single crystals of the 122-FeAs family with almost the same critical temperature, Tc. We investigated the temperature dependence of the lower critical field of a single crystal under static magnetic fields parallel to the axis. The temperature dependence of the London penetration depth can be described equally well either by a single anisotropic -wave-like gap or by a two-gap model, while a d-wave approach cannot be used to fit the London penetration depth data. Intrinsic multiple Andreev reflection effect spectroscopy was used to detect bulk gap v…
A newly discovered family of high-Tc Fe-based superconductors, AeAFe4As4 (Ae = Ca, Sr, Eu and A = K, Rb, Cs), offers further opportunities to understand unconventional superconductivity in these materials. In this Rapid Communication, we report on the superconducting and magnetic properties of CaKFe4As4, studied using muon spectroscopy. Zero-field muon spin relaxation studies carried out on the CaKFe4As4 superconductor do not show any detectable magnetic anomaly at Tc or below, implying that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting ground state. The temperature dependence of …
The superconducting gap is a pivotal character for a superconductor. While the cuprates and conventional phonon-mediated superconductors are characterized by distinct d-wave and s-wave pairing symmetry with nodal and nodeless gap distribution respectively, the superconducting gap distributions in iron-based superconductors are rather diversified. While nodeless gap distributions have been directly observed in Ba1-xKxFe2As2, BaFe2-xCoxAs2, KxFe2-ySe2, and FeTe1-xSex, the signatures of nodal superconducting gap have been reported in LaOFeP, LiFeP, KFe2As2, BaFe2(As1-xPx)2, BaFe2-xRuxAs2 and FeSe…
A brief overview of the superconducting energy gap studies on 122-type family of iron pnictides is given. It seems that the situation in the hole-doped Ba1-xKxFe2As2 is well resolved. Most of the measurements including the presented here point-contact Andreev reflection spectra agree on existence of multiple nodeless gaps in the excitation spectrum of this multiband system. The gaps have basically two sizes - the small one with a strength up to the BCS weak coupling limit and the large one with a very strong coupling with 2Delta/kTc ~ 6 - 8. In the electron doped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 the most of t…
The pairing mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates remains the biggest unresolved mystery in condensed matter physics. To solve the problem, one of the most effective approaches is to investigate directly the superconducting CuO2 layers. Here, by growing CuO2 monolayer films on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ substrates, we identify two distinct and spatially separated energy gaps centered at the Fermi energy, a smaller U-like gap and a larger V-like gap on the films, and study their interactions with alien atoms by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. The newly discovered U-lik…
We present a phenomenological calculation of the quasiparticle-interference (QPI) pattern and inelastic Neutron scattering (INS) spectra in iron-pnictide and layered iron-selenide compounds by using materials specific band-structure and superconducting (SC) gap properties. As both the QPI and the INS spectra arise due to scattering of the Bogolyubov quasiaprticles, they exibit an one-to-one correspondence of the scattering vectors and the energy scales. We show that these two spectroscopies complement each other in such a way that a comparative study allows one to extract the quantitative and …
Several experimental and theoretical arguments have been made in favor of a $d-$wave symmetry for the superconducting state in some Fe-based materials. It is a common belief that a $d-$wave gap in the Fe-based superconductors must have nodes on the Fermi surfaces centered at the $Γ$ point of the Brillouin zone. Here we show that, while this is the case for a single Fermi surface made out of a single orbital, the situation is more complex if there is an even number of Fermi surfaces made out of different orbitals. In particular, we show that for the two $Γ$-centered hole Fermi surfaces made out…
We study a four-band model for the iron oxypnictides, in which the superconducting properties are assumed to be determined by the interband coupling between hole-like and electron-like Fermi sheets. We show that reasonable parameters can account for the angle-resolved photoemission spectra showing multiple gaps in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$, and for the temperature dependence of the superfluid density. At the same time, the zero-temperature value of the superfluid density shows a conventional scaling with the number of carriers.
We report the synthesis and characterization of a new electron-doped La-oxypnictide superconductor by partial substitution of lanthanum by thorium. The superconducting transition temperature at about 30.3 K was observed in La0.8Th0.2OFeAs which is the highest in La-based oxypnictide superconductors synthesized at ambient pressure. We find that the decrease in lattice parameters with Th doping in LaOFeAs is more drastic as compared to that obtained by high pressure (6 GPa) synthesis of oxygen deficient LaOFeAs. The resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements yield an upper critical fie…
LiFeAs is one of the new class of iron superconductors with a bulk onset Tc in the 15-17 K range. We report on the specific heat characterization of single crystal material prepared from self-flux growth techniques with significantly improved properties, including a much decreased residual gamma (proportional to C/T as T->0) in the superconducting state. Thus, in contrast to previous explanations of a finite residual gamma in LiFeAs being due to intrinsic states in the superconducting gap, the present work shows that such a finite residual gamma in LiFeAs is instead a function of sample qualit…
Strong-coupling approach to temperature dependence of competing orders of superconductivity: Possible time-reversal symmetry breaking and nontrivial topology
``Sub-meV'' resolution photoemission spectroscopy was used to study carbon-substitution dependence on the multiple superconducting gap of Mg(B$_{1 - x}$C$_{x})_{2}$. Two features corresponding to $σ$ and $π$ gaps are clearly observed in the raw spectra up to carbon concentration x = 7.5 {%}. The observed x dependence of the two gaps shows a qualitatively different behavior: a marked change of the $σ$ gap proportional to the $T_{c}$ variation and a negligible one of the $π$ gap. This as well as the temperature dependence can be explained with the two-band mean-field theory. Implications from th…
The isovalent-substituted iron pnictide compound SrFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ exhibits multiple evidence for nodal superconductivity via various experimental probes, such as the penetration depth, nuclear magnetic resonance and specific heat measurements. The direct identification of the nodal superconducting (SC) gap structure is challenging, partly because the presence of nodes is not protected by symmetry but instead caused by an accidental sign change of the order parameter, and also because of the three-dimensionality of the electronic structure. We have studied the SC gaps of SrFe…
We present a detailed comparison of the electronic structure of BaFe2As2 in its paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases, through angle-resolved photoemission studies. Using different experimental geometries, we resolve the full elliptic shape of the electron pockets, including parts of dxy symmetry along its major axis that are usually missing. This allows us to define precisely how the hole and electron pockets are nested and how the different orbitals evolve at the transition. We conclude that the imperfect nesting between hole and electron pockets explains rather well the formation …
We have performed high resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on superconducting electron-doped NaFe$_{0.95}$Co$_{0.05}$As ($T_{c}\sim$18 K). We observed a hole-like Fermi surface around the zone center and two electron-like Fermi surfaces around the M point which can be connected by the $Q=(π, π)$ wavevector, suggesting that scattering over the near-nested Fermi surfaces is important to the superconductivity of this "111" pnicitide. Nearly isotropic superconducting gaps with sharp coherent peaks are observed below $T_c$ on all three Fermi surfaces. Upon increasing temperature th…
We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy applied to deeply underdoped cuprate superconductors Bi2Sr2(Ca,Y)Cu2O8 (Bi2212) to reveal the presence of two distinct energy gaps exhibiting different doping dependence. One gap, associated with the antinodal region where no coherent peak is observed, increases with underdoping - a behavior known for more than a decade and considered as the general gap behavior in the underdoped regime. The other gap, associated with the near nodal regime where a coherent peak in the spectrum can be observed, does not increase with less doping - a behavior not …
