We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on Fe-based superconductor LiFeAs (Tc = 18 K). We reveal multiple nodeless superconducting (SC) gaps with 2D/kBTc ratios varying from 2.8 to 6.4, depending on the Fermi surface (FS). We also succeeded in directly observing a gap anisotropy along the FS with magnitude up to ~30 %. The anisotropy is four-fold symmetric with an antiphase between the hole and electron FSs, suggesting complex anisotropic interactions for the SC pairing. The observed momentum dependence of the SC gap offers an excellent opportunity to investigate the underlying pairing mechanism.
The variations of in- and inter- plane London penetration depths, $Δλ(T)$, were measured using a tunnel diode resonator in single crystals of the intrinsic pnictide superconductor LiFeAs. This compound appears to be in the clean limit with a residual resistivity of 4 ($T\to0$) to 8 ($T_c$) $μΩ\cdot$cm and $RRR$ of 65 to 35, respectively. The superfluid density, $ρ_s(T)=λ^2(0)/λ^2(T)$, is well described by the self-consistent two-gap $γ-$model. Together with the previous data, our results support the universal evolution of the superconducting gap from nodeless to nodal upon departure from optim…
The longitudinal in-plane magnetoresistance (LMR) has been measured in different Ba(Fe_(1-x)Co_x)2As2 single crystals and in LiFeAs. For all these compounds, we find a negative LMR in the paramagnetic phase whose magnitude increases as H^2. We show that this negative LMR can be readily explained in terms of suppression of the spin fluctuations by the magnetic field. In the Co-doped samples, the absolute value of the LMR coefficient is found to decrease with doping content in the paramagnetic phase. The analysis of its T dependence in an itinerant nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid model evi…
Superconducting pnictides are widely found to feature spin-singlet pairing in the vicinity of an antiferromagnetic phase, for which nesting between electron and hole Fermi surfaces is crucial. LiFeAs differs from the other pnictides by (i) poor nesting properties and (ii) unusually shallow hole pockets. Investigating magnetic and pairing instabilities in an electronic model that incorporates these differences, we find antiferromagnetic order to be absent. Instead we observe almost ferromagnetic fluctuations which drive an instability toward spin-triplet p-wave superconductivity.
Transverse-field muon-spin rotation measurements performed on two samples of LiFeAs demonstrate that the superfluid stiffness of the superconducting condensate in relation to its superconducting transition temperature is enhanced compared to other pnictide superconductors. Evidence is seen for a field-induced magnetic state in a sample with a significantly suppressed superconducting transition temperature. The results in this system highlight the role of direct Fe-Fe interactions in frustrating pairing mediated by antiferromagnetic fluctuations and suggest that, in common with other pnictide s…
Amongst the iron-based superconductors, LiFeAs is unrivalled in the simplicity of its crystal structure and phase diagram. However, our understanding of this canonical compound suffers from conflict between mutually incompatible descriptions of the material's electronic structure, as derived from contradictory interpretations of the photoemission record. Here, we explore the challenge of interpretation in such experiments. By combining comprehensive photon energy- and polarization- dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements with numerical simulations, we establish…
A combined density functional theory and functional renormalization group method is introduced which takes into account orbital-dependent interaction parameters to derive the effective low-energy theory of weakly to intermediately correlated Fermi systems. As an application, the competing fluctuations in LiFeAs are investigated, which is the main representative of the 111 class of iron pnictides displaying no magnetic order, but superconductivity, for the parent compound. The superconducting order parameter is found to be of s+- type driven by collinear antiferromagnetic fluctuations. They eve…
Measurements of the temperature and angular dependencies of the upper critical fields $H_{c2}$ of a stoichiometric single crystal LiFeAs in pulsed magnetic fields up to 50 T were performed using a tunnel diode resonator. Full $H^{\parallel c}_{c2}(T)$ and $H^{\bot c}_{c2}(T)$ curves with $H^{\parallel c}_{c2}(0)=17 \pm 1$ T, $H^{\bot c}_{c2}(0)=26 \pm 1$ T, and the anisotropy parameter ${γ_H}(T) \equiv H_{c2}^{\bot c}/H_{c2}^{\parallel c}$ decreasing from $\approx 2.5$ at $T_c$ to 1.5 at $T\ll T_c$ were observed. The results for both orientations are in excellent agreement with a theory of $H_…
A major question in Fe-based superconductors remains the structure of the pairing, in particular whether it is of unconventional nature. The electronic structure near vortices can serve as a platform for phase-sensitive measurements to answer this question. By solving Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for LiFeAs, we calculate the energy-dependent local electronic structure near a vortex for different nodeless gap-structure possibilities. At low energies, the local density of states (LDOS) around a vortex is determined by the normal-state electronic structure. However, at energies closer to the ga…
The rich variety of iron-based superconductors and their complex electronic structure lead to a wide range of possibilities for gap symmetry and pairing components. Here we solve in the 2-Fe Brillouin zone the full frequency-dependent linearized Eliashberg equations for LiFeAs with spin-fluctuation mediated pairing interactions. The magnetic excitations are calculated with the random phase approximation on a correlated electronic structure obtained with density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory. Correlations induce long-lived local moments with orbital-dependent dynamics. The i…

We report a de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation study of the 111 iron pnictide superconductors LiFeAs with T_c ~18K and LiFeP with T_c~5K. We find that for both compounds the Fermi surface topology is in good agreement with density functional band-structure calculations and shows quasi-nested electron and hole bands. The effective masses generally show significant enhancement, up to ~3 for LiFeP and ~5 for LiFeAs. However, one hole Fermi surface in LiFeP shows a very small enhancement, as compared with its other sheets. This difference probably results from k-dependent coupling to spin fluct…
In the commented work (PRL 109, 187005 (2012)), Rullier-Albenque et al. present measurements of transverse magnetoresistivity above the transition temperature Tc in clean LiFeAs. By analyzing their data, these authors conclude that the conductivity induced by fluctuations follows a two-dimensional (2D) behavior even close to Tc, in spite that for LiFeAs the transverse coherence length ($ξ_c$(0)=1.6 nm) is larger than the Fe-layers spacing (s=0.636 nm), which would rather suggest a three-dimensional (3D) behavior. This striking proposal would have deep implications in the theoretical understand…
Deviations of low-energy electronic structure of iron-based superconductors from density functional theory predictions have been parametrized in terms of band- and orbital-dependent mass renormalizations and energy shifts. The former have typically been described in terms of a local self-energy within the framework of dynamical mean field theory, while the latter appears to require non-local effects due to interband scattering. By calculating the renormalized bandstructure in both random phase approximation (RPA) and the two-particle self-consistent approximation (TPSC), we show that correlati…
A crucial step in revealing the nature of unconventional superconductivity is to investigate the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy has proven a powerful technique to probe this symmetry by measuring the quasiparticle interference (QPI) which sensitively depends on the superconducting pairing mechanism. A particularly well suited material to apply this technique is the stoichiometric superconductor LiFeAs as it features clean, charge neutral cleaved surfaces without surface states and a relatively high Tc~18K. Our data reveal that in LiFeAs the qua…
The time of life of fermionic quasiparticles, the distribution of which in the momentum-energy space can be measured by angle resolved photoemission (ARPES), is the first quantity to look for fingerprints of interaction responsible for the superconducting pairing. Such an approach has been recently used for superconducting cuprates, but its direct application to pnictides was not possible due to essential three-dimensionality of the electronic band structure and magnetic ordering. Here, we report the investigation of the quasiparticle lifetime in LiFeAs, a non-magnetic stoichiometric supercond…
We revisit the issue of the gap symmetry in KFe2As2, which is an Fe-pnictide superconductor with only hole pockets. Previous theoretical studies mostly argued for a d-wave gap in KFe2As2 since transport and thermodynamic measurements point to the presence of the gap nodes. However, a d-wave gap is inconsistent with recent laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements. We propose the scenario for a nodal s-wave superconductivity induced by a non-magnetic intra-band and inter-band interactions between fermions near hole pockets. The superconducting gap changes sign between the hole pocke…
We have synthesized two iron-pnictide/chalcogenide materials, CuFeTe2 and Fe2As, which share crystallographic features with known iron-based superconductors, and carried out high-pressure electrical resistivity measurements on these materials to pressures in excess of 30 GPa. Both compounds crystallize in the Cu2Sb-type crystal structure that is characteristic of LiFeAs (with CuFeTe2 exhibiting a disordered variant). At ambient pressure, CuFeTe2 is a semiconductor and has been suggested to exhibit a spin-density-wave transition, while Fe2As is a metallic antiferromagnet. The electrical resisti…
Electrical-resistivity and magnetic-susceptibility measurements under hydrostatic pressure up to p = 2.75 GPa have been performed on superconducting LiFeP. A broad superconducting (SC) region exists in the temperature - pressure (T-p) phase diagram. No indications for a spin-density-wave transition have been found, but an enhanced resistivity coefficient at low pressures hints at the presence of magnetic fluctuations. Our results show that the superconducting state in LiFeP is more robust than in the isostructural and isoelectronic LiFeAs. We suggest that this finding is related to the nearly …
In this paper we propose a model to reproduce superconductive and normal properties of the iron pnictide LiFeAs in the framework of the four-band spm wave Eliashberg theory. A confirmation of the multiband nature of the system rises from the experimental measurements of the superconductive gaps and resistivity as function of temperature. We found that the most plausible mechanism is the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation and the estimated values of the total antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation coupling constant in the superconductive and normal state are lambda{tot}=2.00 and lambda{tot,tr}=0.77…
The particular shape of the Fermi surface can give rise to a number of collective quantum phenomena in solids, such as density wave orderings or even superconductivity. In many new iron superconductors this shape, the 'nested' Fermi surface, is indeed observed, but its role in the formation of spin-density waves or superconductivity is not clear. We have studied the electronic structure of the non-magnetic LiFeAs (Tc~18K) superconductor using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find a notable absence of the Fermi surface nesting, strong renormalization of the conduction bands by a fa…
The thermal conductivity k of the iron-arsenide superconductor LiFeAs (Tc ~ 18K) was measured in single crystals at temperatures down to T~50mK and in magnetic fields up to H=17T, very close to the upper critical field Hc2~18T. For both directions of the heat current, parallel and perpendicular to the tetragonal c-axis, a negligible residual linear term k/T is found as T ->0, revealing that there are no zero-energy quasiparticles in the superconducting state. The increase in k with magnetic field is the same for both current directions and it follows closely the dependence expected for an isot…
Identifying the uniqueness of FeP-based superconductors may shed new lights on the mechanism of superconductivity in iron-pnictides. Here, we report nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) studies on LiFeP and LiFeAs which have the same crystal structure but different pnictogen atoms. The NMR spectrum is sensitive to inhomogeneous magnetic fields in the vortex state and can provide the information on the superconducting pairing symmetry through the temperature dependence of London penetration depth $λ_L$. We find that $λ_L$ saturates below $T \sim 0.2$ $T_c$ in LiFeAs, where $T_c$ is the superconducti…
High-precision measurements of magnetic penetration depth $λ$ in clean single crystals of LiFeAs and LiFeP superconductors reveal contrasting low-energy quasiparticle excitations. In LiFeAs the low-temperature $λ(T)$ shows a flat dependence indicative of a fully gapped state, which is consistent with previous studies. In contrast, LiFeP exhibits a $T$-linear dependence of superfluid density $\propto λ^{-2}$, indicating a nodal superconducting order parameter. A systematic comparison of quasiparticle excitations in the 1111, 122, and 111 families of iron-pnictide superconductors implies that th…
The newest homologous series of superconducting As-pnictides, LiFeAs (Li111) and NaFeAs (Na111) have been synthesized and investigated. Both crystallize with the layered tetragonal anti-PbFCl-type structure in P4/nmm space group. Polycrystalline samples and single-crystals of Li111 and Na111 display superconducting transitions at ~ 18 K and 12-25 K, respectively. No magnetic order has been found in either compound, although a weak magnetic background is clearly in evidence. The origin of the carriers and the stoichiometric compositions of Li111 and Na111 were explored.
Possibility of unconventional pairing due to Coulomb interaction in iron-pnictide superconductors is studied by applying a perturbative approach to realistic 2- and 5-band Hubbard models. The linearized Eliashberg equation is solved by expanding the effective pairing interaction perturbatively up to third order in the on-site Coulomb integrals. The numerical results for the 5-band model suggest that the eigenvalues of the Eliashberg equation are sufficiently large to explain the actual high Tc for realistic values of Coulomb interaction and the most probable pairing state is spin-singlet s-wav…
If strong electron-electron interactions between neighboring Fe atoms mediate the Cooper pairing in iron-pnictide superconductors, then specific and distinct anisotropic superconducting energy gaps Δ_i(k) should appear on the different electronic bands i. Here we introduce intra-band Bogoliubov quasiparticle scattering interference (QPI) techniques for determination of Δ_i(k) in such materials, focusing on LiFeAs. We identify the three hole-like bands assigned previously as γ, α_2 and α_1, and we determine the anisotropy, magnitude and relative orientations of their Δ_i(k). These measurements …
We report self-consistent calculations of the gap symmetry for the iron-based high-temperature superconductors using realistic small-q phonon mediated pairing potentials and four-band energy dispersions. When both electron and hole Fermi surface pockets are present, we obtain the nodeless $s_\pm$ state that was first encountered in a spin-fluctuations mechanism picture. Nodal gap structures such as $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $s_\pm+d_{x^2-y^2}$ and even a p-wave triplet state, are accessible upon doping within our phononic mechanism. Our results resolve the conflict between phase sensitive experiments …
The relationship between unconventional superconductivity, antiferromagnetism and nematic order in iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) is still highly debated. In many FeSCs superconductivity is in proximity of a nematically and magnetically ordered state. LiFeAs is an exceptional stoichiometric FeSC becoming superconducting below 18 K, without undergoing a structural or magnetic transition. However, some recent experimental studies suggested the existence of finite nematic fluctuations and even a nematic superconducting state. In this study, we employ elastoresistance as a measure of nematic f…
The resistivity, Hall effect and transverse magnetoresistance (MR) have been measured in low residual resistivity single crystals of LiFeAs. A comparison with angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and quantum oscillation data implies that four carrier bands unevenly contribute to the transport. However the scattering rates of the carriers all display the T^2 behavior expected for a Fermi liquid. Near Tc low field deviations of the MR with respect to a H^2 variation permit us to extract the superconducting fluctuation contribution to the conductivity. Though below Tc the anisotropy of super…
To understand the amazing variety of the superconducting states of Fe-based superconductors, we analyze the multiorbital Hubbard models for LaFeAsO and LiFeAs going beyond the random-phase approximation (RPA), by calculating the vertex correction (VC) and self-energy correction. Due to the spin+orbital mode coupling described by the VC, both orbital and spin fluctuations mutually develop, consistently with the experimental phase diagram with the orbital and magnetic orders. Due to both fluctuations, the s-wave gap function with sign-reversal ($s_{\pm}$-wave), without sign-reversal ($s_{++}$-wa…
We report Fe K beta x-ray emission spectroscopy study of local magnetic moments in various iron based superconductors in their paramagnetic phases. Local magnetic moments are found in all samples studied: PrFeAsO, Ba(Fe,Co)2As2, LiFeAs, Fe1+x(Te,Se), and A2Fe4Se5 (A=K, Rb, and Cs). The moment size varies significantly across different families. Specifically, all iron pnictides samples have local moments of about 1 $μ_B$/Fe, while FeTe and K2Fe4Se5 families have much larger local moments of ~2$μ_B$/Fe, ~3.3$μ_B$/Fe, respectively. In addition, we find that neither carrier doping nor temperature …
Defects in LiFeAs are studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). Topographic images of the five predominant defects allow the identification of their position within the lattice. The most commonly observed defect is associated with an Fe site and does not break the local lattice symmetry, exhibiting a bound state near the edge of the smaller gap in this multi-gap superconductor. Three other common defects, including one also on an Fe site, are observed to break local lattice symmetry and are pair-breaking indicated by clear in-gap bound states, in addition to states…
Cooper pairing in the iron-based high-Tc superconductors is often conjectured to involve bosonic fluctuations. Among the candidates are antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuations and d-orbital fluctuations amplified by phonons. Any such electron-boson interaction should alter the electron's `self-energy', and then become detectable through consequent modifications in the energy dependence of the electron's momentum and lifetime. Here we introduce a theoretical/experimental approach aimed at identifying the relevant fluctuations of iron-based superconductors by measuring effects of their self-energy. …
Between the different families of pnictide multiband superconductors, LiFeAs is probably one of the less understood. Indeed, despite the large amount of experiments performed in the last few years on this material, no consensus has been reached yet on the possible pairing mechanism at play in this system. Here we focus on the precursor effects of superconductivity visible in the transport experiments performed above Tc. By analyzing the superconducting fluctuations in a layered multiband model appropriate for this material, we argue that the strong two-dimensional character of the paraconducti…
We report a microscopic model wherein the unconventional superconductivity emerges from an incoherent `Cooper-pair glass' state. Driven by the pair-pair interaction, a new type of quasi-Bose phase transition is at work. The interaction leads to the unconventional coupling of the quasiparticles to excited pair states, or `super-quasiparticles', with a non-retarded energy-dependent gap. The model describes quantitatively the quasiparticle excitation spectra of both cuprates and pnictides, including the universal `peak-dip-hump' signatures, and for the pseudogap phase above $T_c$. The results sho…
A true critical current density, $j_{c}$, as opposite to commonly measured relaxed persistent (Bean) current, $j_{B}$, was extracted from the Campbell penetration depth, $λ_{C}(T,H)$ measured in single crystals of LiFeAs. The effective pinning potential is non-parabolic, which follows from the magnetic field - dependent Labusch parameter $α$. At the equilibrium (upon field - cooling), $α(H)$ is non-monotonic, but it is monotonic at a finite gradient of the vortex density. This behavior leads to a faster magnetic relaxation at the lower fields and provides a natural \emph{dynamic} explanation f…
The review is focused on one of the most exotic families of iron-based superconductors belonging to the AFeAs structural type, where A is alkali metal. We briefly concern physical and electron properties of the typical members of this family, LiFeAs and NaFeAs, discuss the theoretical models describing the multiple-gap superconducting state, and the experimental data available in literature. As well, we specify the main unsolved problems, that seem crucial for both the AFeAs family and for iron-based superconductors in general.
The precise nature of unconventional superconductivity in Iron Pnictides is presently a hotly debated issue. Here, using insights from normal state electronic structure and symmetry arguments, we show how an unconventional SC emerges from the bad metal "normal" state. Short-ranged, multi-band spin- and charge correlations generates nodeless SC in the active planar $d_{xz,yz}$ bands, and an inter-band proximity effect induces out-of-plane gap nodes in the passive $d_{3z^{2}-r^{2}}$ band. While very good quantitative agreement with various key observations in the SC state and reconciliation with…
Recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of Co-doped LiFeAs report a large and robust superconducting gap on the $Γ$-centered hole band that lies 8 meV below the Fermi level. We show that, unlike a conventional superconductor described by BCS theory, a multiband system with strong interband Coulomb interactions can explain these observations. We model LiFeAs with a five-band model in which the shallow hole band is coupled with the other bands by only Coulomb interactions. Using Eliashberg theory, we find reasonable interaction parameters that reproduce the $T_c$ and all fi…
Whether a quantum critical point (QCP) lies beneath the superconducting dome has been a long-standing issue that remains unresolved in many classes of unconventional superconductors, notably cuprates, heavy fermion compounds and most recently iron-pnictides. The existence of a QCP may offer a route to understand: the origin of their anomalous non-Fermi liquid properties, the microscopic coexistence between unconventional superconductivity and magnetic or some exotic order, and ultimately the mechanism of superconductivity itself. The isovalent substituted iron-pnictide BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$…
The recent discovery of iron-based superconductors challenges the existing paradigm of high-temperature superconductivity. Owing to their unusual multi-orbital band structure, magnetism, and electron correlation, theories propose a unique sign reversed s-wave pairing state, with the order parameter changing sign between the electron and hole Fermi pockets. However, because of the complex Fermi surface topology and material related issues, the predicted sign reversal remains unconfirmed. Here we report a novel phase-sensitive technique for probing unconventional pairing symmetry in the polycrys…
The theoretical analysis of the Cooper pair susceptibility shows the two-band Fe-based superconductors (FeSC) to support the existence of the phase with nonzero Cooper pair momentum (called the Fulde--Ferrel--Larkin--Ovchinnikov phase or shortly FFLO), regardless of the order parameter symmetry. Moreover this phase for the FeSC model with $s_{\pm}$ symmetry is the ground state of the system near the Pauli limit. This article discusses the phase diagram $h-T$ for FeSC in the two-band model and its physical consequences. We compare the results for the superconducting order parameter with s-wave …
In this review, the authors present a summary of experimental reports on newly discovered iron-based superconductors as they were known at the end of 2008. At the same time, this paper is intended to be useful for experimenters to know the current status of these superconductors. The authors introduce experimental results that reveal basic physical properties in the normal and superconducting states. The similarities and differences between iron-pnictide superconductors and other unconventional superconductors are also discussed.
We propose a trilayer $π$-junction that takes advantage of the unconventional $s_{x^2 y^2}=\cos k_x \cos k_y$ pairing symmetry which changes sign between electron and hole Fermi pockets in the iron pnictides. In addition, we also present theoretical results for Andreev bound states in thin superconductor-normal metal (or insulator) iron-pnictide junctions. The presence of nontrivial in-gap states, which uniquely appear in this unconventional pairing state, is a distinct feature in comparison to other singlet pairing states.
Within the framework of density functional theory we investigate the nature of magnetism in various families of Fe-based superconductors. (i) We show that magnetization of stripe-type antiferromagnetic order always becomes stronger when As is substituted by Sb in LaOFeAs, BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and LiFeAs. By calculating Pauli susceptibilities, we attribute the magnetization increase obtained after replacing As by Sb to the enhancement of an instability at $(π,π)$. This points to a strong connection between Fermi surface nesting and magnetism, which supports the theory of the itinerant nature of magne…

The determination of the most appropriate starting point for the theoretical description of Fe-based materials hosting high temperature superconductivity remains among the most important unsolved problem in this relatively new field. Most of the work to date has focused on the pnictides, with LaFeAsO, BaFe2As2 and LiFeAs being representative parent compounds of three families known as 1111, 122 and 111, respectively. This Topic Review examines recent progress in this area, with particular emphasis on the implication of experimental data which have provided evidence for the presence of electron…
We have discovered a new homologous series of iron pnictide oxides (Fe2As2)(Can+2(Al,Ti)nOy)[n = 2,3,4]. These compounds have perovskite-like blocking layers between Fe2As2 layers. The structure of new compounds are tetragonal with space groups of P4/nmm for n = 2 and 4 and P4mm for n = 3, which are similar to those of (Fe2As2)(Can+1(Sc,Ti)nOy)[n = 3,4,5] found in our previous study. Compounds with n = 3 and 4 have new crystal structures with 3 and 4 sheets of perovskite layers, respectively, including a rock salt layer in each blocking layer. The a-axis lengths of the three compounds are appr…
One of the unifying concepts in the iron-pnictide superconductors, both for the mechanism of magnetic ordering and of unconventional order parameter character, has been the electron and hole Fermi surfaces that are approximately nested. Using the density functional methods that have predicted Fermi surfaces correctly in SrFe$_2$P$_2$, we find that the recently reported superconducting Sr$_2$VO$_3$FeAs, with $T_c$=37 K and no apparent competition between magnetism and superconductivity, possesses different Fermi surface geometry and character than previous classes of iron pnictides. The interve…
Electronic Raman scattering measures a polarization-dependent scattering intensity which can provide information about the location of nodes in the energy gap of an unconventional superconductor as well as its overall symmetry. In this paper, we calculate the Raman intensity in the presence of disorder for several models of the iron pnictide superconducting state. We include, for completeness, $d$-wave and isotropic $s_\pm$ responses in addition to more realistic extended $s_\pm$ superconducting gaps. The effect of disorder is modeled using a self-consistent $T$-matrix approximation, and is st…
Non-trivial topology and unconventional pairing are two central guiding principles in the contemporary search for and analysis of superconducting materials and heterostructure compounds. Previously, a topological superconductor has been predominantly conceived to result from a topologically non-trivial band subject to intrinsic or external superconducting proximity effect. Here, we propose a new class of topological superconductors which are uniquely induced by unconventional pairing. They exhibit a boundary-obstructed higher-order topological character and, depending on their dimensionality, …
Magnetic fluctuations in an unconventional superconductor (U-SC) can distinguish between distinct proposals for the symmetry of the order parameter. Motivated thereby, we undertake a study magnetic fluctuations in Iron pnictides, tracking their evolution from the incoherent normal, pseudogapped metal, to the U-SC state. Within our proposal of extended-s-plus s_{xy} inplane gap with proximity-induced out-of-plane line nodes, (i) we describe the evolution of the spin-lattice relaxation rate, from a non-Korringa form in the normal state, to a power-law form in the U-SC in good agreement with expe…
Two major themes in the physics of condensed matter are quantum critical phenomena and unconventional superconductivity. These usually occur in the context of competing interactions in systems of strongly-correlated electrons. All this interesting physics comes together in the behavior of the recently discovered iron pnictide compounds that have generated enormous interest because of their moderately high-temperature superconductivity. The ubiquity of antiferromagnetic ordering in their phase diagrams naturally raises the question of the relevance of magnetic quantum criticality, but the answe…
The electronic origin of the huge magnetostructural effect in layered Fe-As compounds is elucidated using LiFeAs as a prototype. The crucial feature of these materials is the strong covalent bonding between Fe and As, which tends to suppress the exchange splitting. The bonding-antibonding splitting is very sensitive to the distance between Fe and As nuclei. We argue that the fragile interplay between bonding and magnetism is universal for this family of compounds. The exchange interaction is analyzed in real space, along with its correlation with covalency and doping. The range of interaction …
One of the major puzzles regarding unconventional superconductivity is how some of the most interesting superconductors are related to an insulating phase that lies in close proximity. Here we report scanning tunneling microscopy studies of the local electronic structure of Cu doped NaFeAs across the superconductor to insulator transition. We find that in the highly insulating regime the electronic spectrum develops an energy gap with diminishing density of state at the Fermi level. The overall lineshape and strong spatial variations of the spectra are strikingly similar to that of lightly dop…
We have derived new boundary conditions on wave function at the normal metal / superconductor (NS) interface beyond effective mass approximation. These conditions are based on tight-binding approach and enable one to formulate quantitative model for tunneling spectroscopy of superconductors with complex non-parabolic energy spectra. The model is applied to superconductors with unconventional pairing and with multiband electronic structure. In the case of single band unconventional superconductors this model provides known conductance formula (Phys. Rev. Lett. 74 3451 1995), but with generalize…
Recently, several measurements of the nuclear spin lattice relaxation rate $T_{1}^{-1}$ in the newly discovered superconducting Fe-pnictides have been reported. These measurements generally show no coherence peak below $T_{c}$ and indicate a low temperature power law behavior, the characteristics commonly taken as evidence of unconventional superconductivity with lines of nodes crossing the Fermi surface. In this work we show that (i) the lack of a coherence peak is fully consistent with the previously proposed nodeless extended $s_{\pm}$-wave symmetry of the order parameter (whether in the cl…
We report an infrared optical study of the pnictide high-temperature superconductor BaFe$_{1.84}$Co$_{0.16}$As$_{2}$ and its parent compound BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. We demonstrate that electronic correlations are moderately strong and do not change across the spin-density wave transition or with doping. By examining the energy scale and direction of spectral weight transfer, we argue that Hund's coupling \emph{J} is the primary mechanism that gives rise to correlations.
We demonstrate that superconductors which break time-reversal symmetry can exhibit thermoelectric properties, which are entirely different from the Ginzburg mechanism. As an example, we show that in the $s+is$ superconducting state there is a reversible contribution to thermally induced supercurrent, whose direction is not invariant under time-reversal operation. Moreover in contrast to Ginzburg's mechanism it has a singular behavior near the time-reversal symmetry breaking phase transition. The effect can be used to confirm or rule out the $s+is$ state, which is widely expected to be realized…
