We discuss the possibility that the strain field introduced by the structural supermodulation in Bi-2212 and certain other cuprate materials may modulate the superconducting pairing interaction. We calculate the amplitude of this effect, visible in scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments, and thereby relate a change in the local superconducting gap with the change in the local dopant displacements induced by the supermodulation. In principle, since this modulation is periodic, sufficiently accurate x-ray measurements or ab initio calculations should enable one to determine which atomic displacements enhance pairing and therefore T_c.
We investigate the spatial and doping evolutions of the superconducting properties of tri-layer cuprate Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+x by using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Both the superconducting coherence peak and gap size exhibit periodic variations with the structural supermodulation, but the effect is much more pronounced in the underdoped regime than at optimal doping. Moreover, a new type of tunneling spectrum characterized by two superconducting gaps emerges with increasing doping, and the two-gap features also correlate with the supermodulation. We propose that the interaction …

Composite structures such as High-Tc multi-filamentary tapes display a complex anisotropy arising from the combination of the intrinsic anisotropy of the Bi-2223 grains, and that associated to the superconducting phase distribution in the superconductor-metal composite, as well as cracks and other defects. In this paper we characterize the in-plane anisotropy of BSCCO-Ag tapes, i.e., the difference between the transport properties along the longitudinal axis and those along the transverse direction also lying on the wide face of the tape. In particular, we demonstrate that the dissipation asso…
Studies of the doping process can provide a better understanding of the superconducting mechanisms in cuprous oxide materials. In this work, we studied the doping effects on the crystal structure, electric, morphologic and magnetic properties of the BSCCO system with the nominal composition $Bi_{1.6}Pb_{0.4}Sr_{(2-x)}RE_xCa_2Cu_3O_{(10-δ)}$. Here, the rare earth element (RE) was replaced by La in the sites of Sr. The x was ranged from 0.0 to 2.0, in steps of 0.5. The samples were prepared based on Pechini's method. The resulting powder was pressed at room temperature and the pellets were submi…
High-temperature superconductors (HTS) are important for potential applications and for understanding the origin of strong correlations. Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (BSCCO), a van der Waals material, offers a platform to probe the physics down to a unit-cell. Guiding the flow of electrons by patterning 2DEGS and oxide heterostructures has brought new functionality and access to new science. Similarly, modifying superconductivity in HTS locally, on a small length scale, will be of immense interest for superconducting electronics. Here we report transport studies on few unit-cell thick BSCCO a…
We analyze the two-orbital (with $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals) analogue of the $t$-$J$-$U$ model as applied to the description of the copper-oxide monolayer deposited on the Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ substrate (CuO$_2$/BSCCO). We show, that an $extended$ $s$-$wave$ superconducting dome appears in the heavily hole overdoped regime of the model, with dominant contribution to the pairing coming from the $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals. Also, the lower critical doping for the appearance of the SC state concurs with the Lifshitz Transition after which the hole-like Fermi pockets are create…
