We investigate the spatial and doping evolutions of the superconducting properties of tri-layer cuprate Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+x by using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Both the superconducting coherence peak and gap size exhibit periodic variations with the structural supermodulation, but the effect is much more pronounced in the underdoped regime than at optimal doping. Moreover, a new type of tunneling spectrum characterized by two superconducting gaps emerges with increasing doping, and the two-gap features also correlate with the supermodulation. We propose that the interaction between the inequivalent outer and inner CuO2 planes is responsible for these novel features that are unique to tri-layer cuprates.
We discuss the possibility that the strain field introduced by the structural supermodulation in Bi-2212 and certain other cuprate materials may modulate the superconducting pairing interaction. We calculate the amplitude of this effect, visible in scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments, and thereby relate a change in the local superconducting gap with the change in the local dopant displacements induced by the supermodulation. In principle, since this modulation is periodic, sufficiently accurate x-ray measurements or ab initio calculations should enable one to determine which atomic dis…
Recent developments in high-temperature superconductivity highlight a generic tendency of the cuprates to develop competing electronic (charge) supermodulations. While coupled to the lattice and showing different characteristics in different materials, these supermodulations themselves are generally conceived to be quasi-two-dimensional, residing mainly in individual CuO2 planes, and poorly correlated along the c-axis. Here we observed with resonant elastic x-ray scattering a distinct type of electronic supermodulation in YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) thin films grown epitaxially on La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO)…
Many theoretical models of high temperature superconductivity focus only on the doping dependence of the CuO2 plane electronic structure. But such models are manifestly insufficient to explain the strong variations in superconducting critical temperature Tc among cuprates which have identical hole-density but are crystallographically different outside the CuO2 plane. A key challenge, therefore, has been to identify a predominant out-of-plane influence controlling the superconductivity - with much attention focusing on the distance $d_A$ between the apical oxygen and the planar copper atom. Her…
Recent scanning tunneling microscopy on BSCCO 2212 has revealed a substantial spatial supermodulation of the energy gap in the superconducting state. We propose that this gap modulation is due to the superlattice modulations of the atoms in the structure, and hence the parameters in a microscopic model of the CuO2 plane. The gap modulation is estimated using renormalized mean field theory for a t-t'-J model on a superlattice. The results compare well with experiment.

The 2D pair-condensate is characterized by a fluctuating chiral charge ordered state with a "checkerboard" pattern in the CuO_2 planes and with an alternating supermodulation along the c-axis in such a way that the adjacent layers are mirror images of one anothers electronic state. Planar chiral order is revealed with a recent circular dichroism (CD) ARPES experiment (A. Kaminski, et al., Nature, 416, 611. (2002)). We propose further CD experiments on ultrathin films with varying thickness and argue that the odd number of unit cells along the c-axis might provide dichroism hence might support …
A major remaining challenge in the superconducting cuprates is the unambiguous differentiation of the composition and electronic structure of the CuO$_2$ layers and those of the intermediate layers. The large c axis for these materials permits employing soft x-ray (930.3 eV) standing wave (SW) excitation in photoemission that yields atomic layer-by-atomic layer depth resolution of these properties. Applying SW photoemission to Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ yields the depth distribution of atomic composition and the layer-resolved densities of states. We detect significant Ca presence in the Sr…
The proximity effect in a model manganite-cuprate system is investigated theoretically. We consider a situation in which spin-polarized electrons in manganite layers antiferromagnetically couple with electrons in cuprate layers as observed experimentally. The effect of the interfacial magnetic coupling is found to be much stronger than the injection of spin-polarized electrons into the cuprate region. As a result, the superconducting transition temperature depends on the thickness of the cuprate layer significantly. Since the magnetic coupling creates {\em negative} spin polarization, an appli…
We use scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ trilayer cuprates from the optimally doped to overdoped regime. We find that the two distinct superconducting gaps from the inner and outer CuO2 planes both decrease rapidly with doping, in sharp contrast to the nearly constant Tc. Spectroscopic imaging reveals the absence of quasiparticle interference in the antinodal region of overdoped samples, showing an opposite trend to that in single- and double-layer compounds. We propose that the existence of two types of inequivalent CuO2 planes and the intricate interaction betwee…
In superconductors, electrons bound into Cooper pairs conduct a dissipationless current. The strength of the Cooper pairs scales with the value of the critical transition temperature (Tc). In cuprate high-Tc superconductors, however, the pairing mechanism is still unexplained. Here we unveil why in the cuprates the Cooper pairs are so strongly bound to work out the extraordinary high Tc. From one-to-one correspondence between numerical simulation on a microscopic cuprate model and a simple two-component fermion model, we show that hidden fermions emerge from the strong electron correlation and…
Multilayered cuprates possess not only the highest superconducting temperature transition but also offer a unique platform to study disorder-free CuO$_2$ planes and the interplay between competing orders with superconductivity. Here, we study the underdoped trilayer cuprate HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8+ δ}$ and we report the first quantum oscillation and Hall effect measurements in magnetic field up to 88 T. A careful analysis of the complex spectra of quantum oscillations strongly supports the coexistence of an antiferromagnetic order in the inner plane and a charge order in the outer planes. Th…
Based on a hybrid interlayer coupling mechanism, we study the coexistence of superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AFM) in trilayer cuprates. By introducing an interlayer magnetic scattering term, we solve the multilayer $t{-}J$ model with Josephson coupling under the framework of Gutzwiller projection. We show that both the SC and AFM orders in the multilayered system are enhanced and the range of AFM order is extended. The layer configuration of d-wave pairing gap and AFM order further plays an essential role in determining the interlayer magnetic and superconducting coupling phase …
We have performed a systematic angle-resolved photoemission study of as-grown and oxygen-reduced Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ and Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_{x}$CuO$_4$ electron-doped cuprates. In contrast to the common belief, neither the band filling nor the band parameters are significantly affected by the oxygen reduction process. Instead, we show that the main electronic role of the reduction process is to remove an anisotropic leading edge gap around the Fermi surface. While the nodal leading edge gap is induced by long-range antiferomagnetic order, the origin of the antinodal one remains unclear.
The low-energy electronic structure of the trilayer cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ near optimal doping is investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The normal state quasiparticle dispersion and Fermi surface, and the superconducting d-wave gap and coherence peak are observed and compared with those of single and bilayer systems. We find that both the superconducting gap magnitude and the relative coherence-peak intensity scale linearly with $T_c$ for various optimally doped materials. This suggests that the higher $T_c$ of the trilayer system should …
The physical properties of high-$T_c$ superconductors are affected by spatial inhomogeneities introduced by impurities. In addition, superconductivity and electronic nematicity seem intertwined in these materials. To address these questions, we apply inhomogeneous cluster dynamical mean field theory to the study of superconductivity in the Hubbard model, in the presence of a repeated impurity, at zero temperature. We find that the superconducting phase is shifted slightly away from half-filling due to the presence of the impurity. This can be explained by a competition with the Mott insulating…

We have investigated the optimally doped tri-layer cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ (Bi2223) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and observed energy bands and Fermi surfaces originated from the outer and inner CuO$_2$ planes (OP and IP) separately. The OP band is overdoped (hole density $\sim$ 0.26/Cu) with a large d-wave gap of $Δ_0$ $\sim$ 43 meV while the IP is underdoped ($\sim$ 0.06/Cu) with an even large gap of $Δ_0$ $\sim$ 60 meV. We propose that the enhancement of the $Δ_0$ of IP is due to the minimal influence of out-of-plane disorder and that the OP gap is then en…
With the superconducting cuprates in mind, a set of unitary transformations was used to decouple electrons and phonons in the strong-coupling limit. While phonons remain almost unrenormalised, electrons are transformed into itinerent singlet and triplet bipolarons and thermally excited polarons. The triplet/singlet exchange energy and the binding energy of the bipolarons are thought to account for the spin and charge pseudogaps in the cuprates, respectively. We calculated the Hall Lorenz number of the system to show that the Wiedemann-Franz law breaks down due to the interference of the polaro…
We discuss the characteristic features of triple Cu-O2 layer cuprates superconductors, by comparing those of single and double layer cuprates superconductors. After a brief introduction to multilayer cuprates and their characteristic properties such as the doping imbalance between the inner and outer Cu-O2 planes (IP and OP, respectively) revealed by nuclear magnetic resonance, we present the experimental results of angle resolved photoemission and Raman scattering spectroscopy for the triple layer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+z which showed two different superconducting gaps opening on the IP and OP. The …
We investigate in underdoped cuprates possible coexistence of the superconducting (SC) order at zero momentum and pair density wave (PDW) at momentum ${\bf Q}=(π, π)$ in the presence of a Neel order. By symmetry, the $d$-wave uniform singlet pairing $dS_0$ can coexist with the $d$-wave triplet PDW $dT_{\bf Q}$, and the $p$-wave singlet PDW $pS_{\bf Q}$ can coexist with the $p$-wave uniform triplet $pT_0$. At half filling, we find the novel $pS_{\bf Q}+pT_0$ state is energetically more favorable than the $dS_0+dT_{\bf Q}$ state. At finite doping, however, the $dS_0+dT_{\bf Q}$ state is more fav…
We study electronic states of multilayer cuprates in the normal phases as functions of the number of CuO_2 planes and the doping rate. The resonating valence bond wave function and the Gutzwiller approximation are used for a two-dimensional multilayer t-t'-t''-J model. We calculate the electron-removal spectral functions at (π,0) in the CuO_2 plane next to the surface to understand the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) spectra. We find that the trilayer spectrum is narrower than the bilayer spectrum but is wider than the monolayer spectrum. In the tri- and tetralayer systems, t…
In the framework of the effective low-energy model for High-$T_c$ cuprates with account for three-centers interaction terms and spin fluctuations the properties of normal and superconducting phases of p- and n-type cuprates are investigated. Microscopic model parameters were obtained from ARPES data on undoped compounds. Obtained evolution of the chemical potential with doping, Fermi Surface at optimal doping, and $T_c(x)$ phase diagram for n-type cuprates are in remarkably good agreement with the experiment. It is shown that the spin-exciton mechanism due to singlet-triplet hybridization take…
Exciting new work on Bi2212 shows the presence of non-trivial spin-orbit coupling effects as seen in spin resolved ARPES data [Gotlieb et al., Science, 362, 1271-1275 (2018)]. Motivated by these observations we consider how the picture of spin-orbit coupling through local inversion symmetry breaking might be observed in cuprate superconductors. Furthermore, we examine two spin-orbit driven effects, the spin-Hall effect and the Edelstein effect, focusing on the details of their realizations within both the normal and superconducting states.
The dynamical spin susceptibility chi'' at wave vector (pi, pi) and the spectrum pi'' of the spin-triplet particle--particle excitation with center of mass momentum (pi, pi) (pi-excitation) are considered in the slave-boson formulation of the t--J-model. Propagators are calculated in a diagrammatic t-matrix approximation in the d-wave superconducting state for a wide doping range. The resulting spectra chi'' and pi'' both show a resonance at a doping dependent energy, in qualitative agreement with recent numerical cluster calculations. In underdoped systems, the peak position is comparable to …
We present a low-energy muon-spin-rotation study of the magnetic and superconducting properties of YBa2Cu3O7/PrBa2Cu3O7 trilayer and bilayer heterostructures. By determining the magnetic-field profiles throughout these structures we show that a finite superfluid density can be induced in otherwise semiconducting PrBa2Cu3O7 layers when juxtaposed to YBa2Cu3O7 "electrodes" while the intrinsic antiferromagnetic order is unaffected.
We report on an investigation of the redistribution of interlayer coherence in the trilayer cuprate Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10. The experiment is performed under the same apical-oxygen phonon excitation discussed in the past for the bilayer cuprate YBa2Cu3O6.5. In Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10, we observe a similar spectral weight loss at the transverse plasma mode resonance seen in YBa2Cu3O6.5. However, this feature is not accompanied by light-enhanced interlayer coherence that was seen in YBa2Cu3O6+x, for which the transverse plasma mode is observed at equilibrium even in the normal state. These new observations off…
This paper is concerned with the idea that the electron is fractionalized in the cuprate high-$T_c$ materials. We show how the notion of topological order may be used to develop a precise theoretical characterization of a fractionalized phase in spatial dimension higher than one. Apart from the fractional particles into which the electron breaks apart, there are non-trivial gapped topological excitations - dubbed "visons". A cylindrical sample that is fractionalized exhibits two disconnected topological sectors depending on whether a vison is trapped in the "hole" or not. Indeed, "vison expuls…
The two-dimensional t-J model on a frustrating lattice is studied using mean-field variational theories with Gutzwiller approximation. We find that a superconducting state with broken time-reversal symmetry (d+id state) is realized in the parameter region close to the triangular lattice. The frustration enlarges the region of superconductivity when $t<0$ for the hole-doped case, which is equivalent to $t>0$ for electron doping. We also discuss the SU(2) degeneracy at half-filling. The d+id state probably corresponds to the spin gap state at half-filling.
We study the twisted Hubbard model of a cuprate bilayer at a fixed twist angle $θ=53.13^{\circ}$ using the variational cluster approximation, a method that treats short-range dynamical correlations exactly. At intermediate interlayer tunneling, the phase difference $ϕ$ between the $d$-wave order parameters of two layers is $π$ in the overdoped regime, while it is zero in the underdoped regime, close to the Mott phase. At strong interlayer tunneling, we observe a clear time-reversal symmetry breaking phase near optimal doping, in which the phase difference $ϕ$ changes continuously from 0 to $π$…
Using a newly developed first-principles Wannier-states approach that takes into account large on-site Coulomb repulsion, we derive the effective low-energy interacting Hamiltonians for several prototypical high-$T_c$ superconducting cuprates. The material dependence is found to originate primarily from the different energy of the apical atom $p_z$ state. Specifically, the general properties of the low-energy hole state, namely the Zhang-Rice singlet, are significantly modified by a triplet state associated with this $p_z$ state, via additional intra-sublattice hoppings, nearest-neighbor "supe…
In Part I we discuss accumulating experimental evidence related to the structure and origin of the bosonic spectral function in high-temperature superconducting (HTSC) cuprates at and near optimal doping. Some global properties of the spectral function, such as number and positions of peaks, are extracted by combining optics, neutron scattering, ARPES and tunnelling measurements. These methods give convincing evidence for strong electron-phonon interaction (EPI) with the coupling constant between 1-3 in cuprates near optimal doping. Here we clarify how these results are in favor of the Eliashb…
Applying a variational Monte Carlo method to a two-dimensional t-J model, we study the nonmonotonic d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductivity, observed by Raman scattering and ARPES experiments in the electron-doped cuprates. As a gap function in the trial state, we extend the d-wave form (ext.d) so as to have its maxima located near the hot spots of the system. It is found that, in contrast to the hole-doped case, the ext.d wave is always more stable than the simple d wave in the electron-doped case, and the magnetic correlation of the wave vector (π,π) as well as the pair correlation is enhanced. T…
Recently, Kaminski et al. have reported that time reversal symmetry is broken in the pseudogap phase in the high temperature superconducting material Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{2+δ} (Bi-2212). Here we examine the role of translationally invariant broken time reversal states on d_{x^2-y^2} superconductors. In particular, we determine the change in the superconducting order parameter structure. We find that the broken time reversal pseudogap state that is consistent with the experiment of Kaminski et al., gives rise to a novel mixed singlet-triplet pairing d+ip phase. This d+ip state is shown to give rise…
We review the explanation for resonant neutron scattering experiments in $YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+δ}$ and $Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca_2 O_{8+δ}$ materials from the point of view of triplet excitation in the particle-particle channel, the pi excitation. Relation of these resonances to the superconducting condensation energy and their role in stabilizing the superconducting state is discussed. Due to the superconducting fluctuations, the pi resonance may appear as a broad peak above Tc. Analogue problem to the pi excitation for the case of s-wave pairing, the eta excitation, is considered in the strong coupling limit w…
We present a comprehensive study performed with high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on triple-layered Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+d single crystals. By measurements above TC the Fermi surface topology defined by the Fermi level crossings of the CuO2-derived band was determined. A hole-like Fermi surface as for single and double-CuO2 layered Bi-based cuprates is found, giving new input to the current debate of the general Fermi surface topology of the high Tc superconductors. Furthermore, we present measurements of the superconducting gap of Bi-2223 and show that there are clear indic…
Using the variational Monte-Carlo method we find that a relatively weak long-range electron-phonon interaction induces a d-wave superconducting state of doped Mott-Hubbard insulators and/or strongly-correlated metals with a condensation energy significantly larger than can be obtained with Coulomb repulsion only. Moreover, the superconductivity is shown to exist for infinite on-site Coulomb repulsion, removing the requirement for additional mechanisms such as spin fluctuations to mediate d-wave superconductivity. We argue that the superconducting state is robust with respect to a more intricat…
We report measurements of the anisotropy of the spin echo decay for the inner layer Cu site of the triple layer cuprate, Hg_0.8Re_0.2Ba_2Ca_2Cu_3O_8 (T_c=126 K) in the pseudogap T regime below T_pg ~ 170 K and the corresponding analysis for their interpretation. As the field alignment is varied, the shape of the decay curve changes from Gaussian (H_0 \parallel c) to single exponential (H_0 \perp c). The latter characterizes the decay caused by the fluctuations of adjacent Cu nuclear spins caused by their interactions with electron spins. The angular dependence of the second moment (T_{2M}^{-2}…
Photoinduced phase transitions from insulating to metallic states, accompanied by structural re-arrangements, have been recently reported in complex transition-metal oxides. However, the optical control of a purely electronic phase transition, where the thermodynamic phase is determined by the distribution of excitations, has remained elusive. Here we report optical control of the electronic phase in an underdoped Bi2212 crystal through impulsive photoinjection of quasiparticles (QP) via ultrashort laser pulses, avoiding significant laser heating. An abrupt transition of the transient optical …
Comparison is made of the electronic structure of the little-studied layered transition metal oxide LiNbO$_2$ with that of Na$_x$CoO$_2$, which has attracted tremendous interest since superconductivity was discovered in its hydrate. Although the active transition metal $d$ states are quite different due to different crystal fields and band filling, both systems show a strong change of electronic structure with changes in the distance between the transition metal ion layer and the oxygen layers. The niobate is unusual in having a large second-neighbor hopping amplitude, and a nearest neighbor h…
An understanding of high temperature superconductivity clearly requires the nature of its normal state, however the normal state of the cuprates is poorly understood. One possible explanation is the bipolaronic model where mobile, heavily phonon-dressed holes (polarons) are paired in real space. The ground state is made up of intersite singlet bipolarons where excitations can be made to triplet bipolaron and polaron bands. Based on this model I derive the Nernst coefficient and the Thermoelectric power for the cuprates. The Nernst coefficient shows an interesting interference term due to the t…
One of the first theoretical proposals for understanding high temperature superconductivity in the cuprates was Anderson's RVB theory using a Gutzwiller projected BCS wave function as an approximate ground state. Recent work by Paramekanti, Randeria and Trivedi has shown that this variational approach gives a semi-quantitative understanding of the doping dependences of a variety of experimental observables in the superconducting state of the cuprates. In this paper we revisit these issues using the ``renormalized mean field theory'' of Zhang, Gros, Rice and Shiba based on the Gutzwiller approx…
We study the $τ_1$-impurity induced $\mathbf{q}$-space pattern of the energy derivative local density of states (LDOS) in a d-wave superconductor. We are motivated in part by the recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observation of strong gap inhomogeneity with weak charge density variation in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (BSCCO). The hypothesis is that the gap inhomogeneity might be triggered by the disorder in pair potential. We focus on the effects of electron coupling to various bosonic modes, at the mode energy shifted by the d-wave superconducting gap. The pattern due to a highly…
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using tunable low energy photons allows us to study the quasi-particle (QP) dispersions of the inner and outer CuO2 planes (IP and OP) separately in the tri-layer cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ (Bi2223). The kink energy of the OP band is $\sim$ 70 meV, as observed in various high-$T_c$ cuprates, while that of the IP band is as large as 100 meV in the superconducting (SC) state. This large kink energy is attributed to the $\sim$ 35 meV buckling mode plus the large ($\sim$ 60 meV) SC gap of IP. The IP band also shows a weak kink feature at 70…
The intra-unit-cell nematic phase is studied within the three-band Emery model of the cuprates with the use of the approach based on the diagrammatic expansion of the Gutzwiller wave function (DE-GWF). According to our analysis the spontaneous $C_4$ symmetry breaking of the electronic wave function, leading to the nematic behavior, can appear due to electron correlations induced mainly by the onsite Coulomb repulsion, even in the absence of the corresponding intersite oxygen-oxygen repulsion term. The latter has been considered as the triggering factor of the nematic state formation in a numbe…
We report the Raman scattering measurements on the triple layer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (Bi2223) crystals of four different doping levels from slightly overdoped to strongly underdoped regimes. We observed a double pair-breaking peak in the antinodal B1g configuration that we attribute to the two antinodal gaps opening on the outer and inner CuO2-plane (OP and IP) band, respectively. The doping dependence of the pair-breaking peak energy was investigated. Considering the difference in doping level between the IP and OP, all the B1g pair-breaking peak energies for OP and IP were found to align on a sin…
We investigate a zero-temperature itinerant antiferromagnetic transition where the fermions possess a d-wave gap. This problem pertains to both the nodal liquid insulating phase and the d-wave superconducting phase of the underdoped cuprates. We find that a non-trivial quantum phase transition exists, and that the quantum critical point is dominated by a long-ranged interaction ($|x-y|^{-2d}$) of the Néel order parameter, which is induced by the Dirac-like fermions near gap nodes. We formulate a Ginzburg-Landau functional and estimate the critical exponents via the large-N expansion method.
The discovery of superconductivity in Sr-doped NdNiO$_{2}$ is a crucial breakthrough in the long pursuit for nickel oxide materials with electronic and magnetic properties similar to those of the cuprates. NdNiO$_2$ is the infinite-layer member of a family of square-planar nickelates with general chemical formula R$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$ (R = La, Pr, Nd, $n= 2, 3, ... \infty$). In this letter, we investigate superconductivity in the trilayer member of this series (R$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$) using a combination of first-principles and $t-J$ model calculations. R$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ compounds resemble cuprat…
A major open topic in cuprates is the interplay between the lattice and electronic dynamics and the importance of their coupling to the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC). As evidenced by Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure experiments (EXAFS), anharmonic structural effects are correlated with the charge dynamics and the transition to a superconducting phase in different HTSC compounds. Here we describe how structural anharmonic effects can be coupled to electronic and lattice dynamics in cuprate systems by performing the exact diagonalization of a prototype anharmonic…
We propose a possible way to realize topological superconductivity with application of laser light to superconducting cuprate thin films. Applying Floquet theory to a model of $d$-wave superconductors with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, we derive an effective model and discuss its topological nature. Interplay of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and the laser light effect induces the synthetic magnetic fields, thus making the system gapped. Then the system acquires the topologically non-trivial nature which is characterized by Chern numbers. The effective magnetic fields do not create the vortices …
Doping Evolution of Nodal Electron Dynamics in Trilayer Cuprate Superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ Revealed by Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy
We report a systematic study of the resistive superconducting transition in the electron-doped cuprates Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ down to 1.5 K for magnetic field up to 58 T applied parallel to the conducting ab-planes. We find that the zero temperature parallel critical field (H$_{c2\parallel ab}$(0)) exceeds 58 T for the underdoped and optimally-doped films. For the overdoped films, 58 T is sufficient to suppress the superconductivity. We also find that the Zeeman energy $μ_B$H$_{c2\parallel ab}$(0) reaches the superconducting gap ($\triangle_0$), i.e. $μ_B$H$_{c2\parallel ab}(0)\simeq \…
Low-valence nickelates $-$ including infinite-layer (IL) and trilayer (TL) compounds $-$ are longstanding candidates for mimicking the high-temperature superconductivity of cuprates. A recent breakthrough in the field came with the discovery of superconductivity in hole-doped IL nickelates. Yet, the degree of similarity between low-valence nickelates and cuprates is the subject of a profound debate for which soft x-ray spectroscopy experiments at the Ni $L$- and O $K$-edge provided critical input. In this review, we will discuss the essential elements of the electronic structure of low-valance…
Hybridization of Bogoliubov-quasiparticles between adjacent CuO$_2$ layers in the triple-layer cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ studied by ARPES
