Monotonic d-wave Superconducting Gap in Optimally-Doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_6$ Superconductor by Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy
The momentum and temperature dependence of the superconducting gap and pseudogap in optimally-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_6$ superconductor is investigated by super-high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The measured energy gap in the superconducting state exhibits a standard {\it d}-wave form. Pseudogap opens above T$_c$ over a large portion of the Fermi surface with a "Fermi arc" formed near the nodal region. In the region outside of the "Fermi arc", the pseudogap has the similar magnitude and momentum dependence as the gap in the superconducting state which changes little with temperature and shows no abrupt change across T$_c$. These observations indicate that the pseudogap and superconducting gap are closely related and favor the picture that the pseudogap is a precursor to the superconducting gap.
The magnitude of the powder spin susceptibility of an optimally doped superconductor HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201) in the normal state is found to be nearly the same as that of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ near the optimally doped level. The Stoner enhancement factor of Hg1201 is larger than that of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$. The magnitude correlation of the Stoner enhancement factor is inconsistent with the effect of the recent theoretical Coulomb repulsion between 3$d$ electrons and that of the superexchange intereraction of a charge transfer type.
Due to the orthorhombic distortion of the lattice, the electronic hopping integrals along the $a$ and $b$ diagonals, the orthorhombic directions, are slightly different. We calculate their difference in the LDA and find $t_{a}^{\prime}-t_{b}^{\prime}\approx 8 $meV. We argue that electron correlations in the insulating phase of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$, i. e. at doping $x\leq 0.055,$ dramatically enhance the $(t_{a}^{\prime}-t_{b}^{\prime}) $-splitting between the $a$- and $b$-hole valleys. In particular, we predict that the intensity of both angle-resolved photoemission and of optical absor…
We have measured the superconducting gap Ds in optimally doped samples of BSCCO, TBCCO, HBCCO and HSCCO by Andreev and tunnelling spectroscopy and by ARPES. We have found that the low-temperature value of the gap within experimental errors is linearly increasing with the number n of CuO2 layers in the unit cell of the investigated HTSC-families (n < 4)
We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on single-layered cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_6$ to clarify the origin of the pseudogap. By using various photon energies, we have succeeded in directly observing two different pseudogaps with two different energy scales which coexist in the antinodal region: one reflects the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing strength while the other has a larger energy scale suggesting an origin distinct from superconductivity. The observed two-pseudogap behavior provides a key to fully understand the pseudogap phenomena in cuprates.
Angle-resolved photoemission measurements on the electron-doped cuprate Sm(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4) evidence anisotropic dressing of charge-carriers due to many-body interactions. Most significantly, the scattering rate along the zone boundary saturates for binding energies larger than ~200 meV, while along the diagonal direction it increases nearly linearly with the binding energy in the energy range ~150-500 meV. These results indicate that many-body interactions along the diagonal direction are strong down to the bottom of the band, while along the zone-bounday they become very weak at energies …
High-resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on the electron-doped (Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$)CuO$_4$ high temperature superconductor. We have revealed a clear kink at $\sim$60 meV in the dispersion along the (0,0)-($π$,$π$) nodal direction, accompanied by a peak-dip-hump feature in the photoemission spectra. This indicates that the nodal electrons are coupled to collective excitations (bosons) in electron-doped superconductors, with the phonons as the most likely candidate of the boson. This finding has established a universality of nodal electron c…
Bulk crystals of electron-doped cuprates with the T'-type structure require both Ce substitutions and reduction annealing for the emergence of superconductivity while the reduction annealing alone can induce superconductivity in thin films of the T'-type cuprates. In order to reveal low-energy electronic states which are responsible for the superconductivity, we have conducted angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on thin films of the superconducting Ce-free T'-type cuprate Pr$_2$CuO$_4$. The results indicate that the overall band structure and the Fermi surface area of the su…
We present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data on moderately underdoped La$_{1.855}$Sr$_{0.145}$CuO$_4$ at temperatures below and above the superconducting transition temperature. Unlike previous studies of this material, we observe sharp spectral peaks along the entire underlying Fermi surface in the superconducting state. These peaks trace out an energy gap that follows a simple {\it d}-wave form, with a maximum superconducting gap of 14 meV. Our results are consistent with a single gap picture for the cuprates. Furthermore our data on the even more underdoped sample La$_{…
The magnetic susceptibility of the optimally doped Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_x$CuO$_4$ in the superconducting state is calculated using the t-J model of Cu-O planes, Mori's projection operator technique and the dispersion of electron bands derived from photoemission experiments. The electron band folding across the antiferromagnetic Brillouin zone border, which is inherent in the crystal, leads to a commensurate low-frequency response. The same band folding causes the appearance of a supplementary spin-excitation branch. The coexistence of the two spin-excitation branches explains two maxima observed in…
HgBa$_{2}$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201) has been shown to be a model cuprate for scattering, optical, and transport experiments, but angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data are still lacking owing to the absence of a charge-neutral cleavage plane. We report on progress in achieving the experimental conditions for which quasiparticles can be observed in the near-nodal region of the Fermi surface. The d-wave superconducting gap is measured and found to have a maximum of 39 meV. At low temperature, a kink is detected in the nodal dispersion at approximately 51 meV below the Fermi level, an …
In order to realize superconductivity in cuprates with the T'-type structure, not only chemical substitution (Ce doping) but also post-growth reduction annealing is necessary. In the case of thin films, however, well-designed reduction annealing alone without Ce doping can induce superconductivity in the T'-type cuprates. In order to unveil the origin of superconductivity in the Ce-undoped T'-type cuprates, we have performed bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoemission and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopies on superconducting and non-superconducting Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x=$ 0, 0.15, and 0.19…
We address an important issue as to whether bulk-sensitive data of Raman scattering, optical conductivity, magnetic penetration depth, directional point-contact tunneling spectra, and nonmagnetic pair-breaking effect in optimally electron-doped Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-y} support a nodeless s-wave or d-wave superconducting gap. We numerically calculate Raman intensities, directional point-contact tunneling spectra, and nonmagnetic pair-breaking effect in terms of both s-wave and d-wave gap symmetries. We find that all these bulk-sensitive data are in quantitative agreement with a nearly isotro…
We observe apparent hole pockets in the Fermi surfaces of single-layer Bi-based cuprate superconductors from angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES). From detailed low-energy electron diffraction measurements and an analysis of the ARPES polarization-dependence, we show that these pockets are not intrinsic, but arise from multiple overlapping superstructure replicas of the main and shadow bands. We further demonstrate that the hole pockets reported recently from ARPES [Meng et al, Nature 462, 335 (2009)] have a similar structural origin, and are inconsistent with an intrinsic hole pocket associat…
Using a mapping from the three-band extended Hubbard model for cuprate superconductors into a generalized t-J model, and exact diagonalization of the latter in a 4x4 cluster, we determine the quasiparticle weight for destruction of a Cu or an O electrons with definite wave vector k. We also derive an approximate but accurate analytical expression which relates the O intensity with the quasiparticle weight in the generalized t-J model, and use it to obtain the O intensity from results of the self-consistent Born approximation. The k-dependence of Cu and O intensities is markedly different. In p…
The interplay between superconductivity and the pseudogap is an important aspect of cuprate physics. However, the nature of the pseudogap remains controversial, in part because different experiments have suggested different gap functions. Here we present a photon-energy-dependence angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study on Bi$_{1.5}$Pb$_{0.55}$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$. We find that antinodal ARPES spectra at low photon energies are dominated by background signals which can lead to a misevaluation of the spectral gap size. Once background is properly accounted for, indepe…
We report an angle-resolved photoemission study of the charge stripe ordered La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ system. A comparative and quantitative line shape analysis is presented as the system evolves from the overdoped regime into the charge ordered phase. On the overdoped side ($x=0.20$), a normal state anti-nodal spectral gap opens upon cooling below ~ 80 K. In this process spectral weight is preserved but redistributed to larger energies. A correlation between this spectral gap and electron scattering is found. A different lineshape is observed in the antinodal region of charge order…
The dispersion of the Cu-O bond-stretching vibrations in overdoped La$_{1.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$CuO$_4$ (not superconducting) has been studied by high resolution inelastic neutron scattering. It was found that the doping-induced renormalization of the so-called breathing and the half-breathing modes is larger than in optimally doped La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$. On the other hand, the phonon linewidths are generally smaller in the overdoped sample. Features observed in optimally doped La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$ which suggest a tendency towards charge stripe formation are absent in overdoped La$_{1.…
Knowledge of the gap function is important to understand the pairing mechanism for high-temperature ($T_\mathrm{c}$) superconductivity. However, Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy (FT STS) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in the cuprates have reported contradictory gap functions, with FT-STS results deviating strongly from a canonical $d_{x^2-y^2}$ form. By applying an "octet model" analysis to autocorrelation ARPES, we reveal that a contradiction occurs because the octet model does not consider the effects of matrix elements and the pseudogap. This reaffirm…
We present the first angle-resolved photoemission measurement on the single-layer Hg-based cuprate, HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201). A quasi-particle peak in the spectrum and a kink in the band dispersion around the diagonal of the Brillouin zone are observed, whereas no structure is detected near the Brillouin zone boundary. To search for a material-dependent trend among hole-doped cuprates, including Hg1201, we use a tight-binding model to fit their Fermi surfaces. We find a positive correlation between the $T_{c,\mathrm{max}}$ and $t'/t$, consistent with theoretical predictions.
We have performed angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy on the electron doped cuprate superconductor Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$. A comparison of the leading edge midpoints between the superconducting and normal states reveals a small, but finite shift of 1.5-2 meV near the ($π$,0) position, but no observable shift along the zone diagonal near ($π$/2,$π$/2). This is interpreted as evidence for an anisotropic superconducting gap in the electron doped materials, which is consistent with the presence of d-wave superconducting order in this cuprate superconductor.
We use inelastic neutron scattering to probe magnetic excitations of an optimally electron-doped superconductor Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ above and below its superconducting transition temperature $T_c=25$ K. In addition to gradually opening a spin pseudo gap at the antiferromagnetic ordering wavevector ${\bf Q}=(1/2,1/2,0)$, the effect of superconductivity is to form a resonance centered also at ${\bf Q}=(1/2,1/2,0)$ but at energies above the spin pseudo gap. The intensity of the resonance develops like a superconducting order parameter, similar to those for hole-doped superconductors…
We present measurements of the ab-plane magnetic penetration depth, λ(T), in five optimally doped Pr_{1.855}Ce_{0.145}CuO_{4-y} films for 1.6 K \leq T \leq T_c \sim 24 K. Low resistivities, high superfluid densities n_s(T)\propto λ^{-2}(T), high T_c's, and small transition widths are reproducible and indicative of excellent film quality. For all five films, λ^{-2}(T)/λ^{-2}(0) at low T is well fitted by an exponential temperature dependence with a gap, Δ_{min}, of 0.85 k_B T_c. This behavior is consistent with a nodeless gap and is incompatible with d-wave superconductivity.
The spectral properties of a one-dimensional (1D) single-chain Mott insulator Sr$_2$CuO$_{3}$ have been studied in angle-resolved photoemission and optical spectroscopy, at half filling and with small concentrations of extra charge doped into the chains via high oxygen pressure growth. The single- particle gap is reduced with oxygen doping, but the metallic state is not reached. The bandwidth of the charge-transfer band increases with doping, while the state becomes narrower, allowing unambiguous observation of separated spinon and holon branches in the doped system. The optical gap is not cha…
We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study of the electron-doped high-Tc superconductors (HTSCs) Sm_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4} (SCCO) and Eu_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4} (ECCO). Around the nodal point (pi/2, pi/2), we observed an energy gap at the Fermi level (EF) for both samples, resulting from the strong effects of antiferromagnetism. The magnitude of this gap in ECCO is larger than that in SCCO, implying that the effects of antiferromagnetism in ECCO are stronger than that in SCCO. Also, we quantitatively confirmed the effects of antiferromagnetism by the band dispersions to tight-bindi…
Electronic evolution from an antiferromagnet to a high-Tc superconductor is revealed by angle-resolved photoemission experiments on tetragonal Ca(1.9)Na(0.1)CuO(2)Cl(2) single crystals, which were successfully grown for the first time under high pressures. In this underdoped superconductor, we found clear fingerprints of the parent insulator: a shadow band and a large pseudo-gap. These observations are most likely described by a "chemical potential shift", which contrasts clearly with the prevailing wisdom of the "pinned chemical potential" learned from the prototype La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4), demons…
To reconcile the two experimental findings on La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4, namely, Fermi surface (FS) observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and sharp incommensurate magnetic peaks by neutron scattering, we propose a picture that a quasi-one-dimensional FS (q-1dFS) is realized in each CuO_{2} plane whose q-1d direction alternates along the c-axis.
Low energy electronic structure of optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7-d is investigated using laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The surface state and the CuO chain band that usually overlap the CuO2 plane derived bands are not detected, thus enabling a clear observation of the bulk superconducting state. The observed bilayer splitting of the Fermi surface is ~0.08 angstrom^{-1} along the (0,0)-(pi,pi) direction, significantly larger than Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d. The kink structure of the band dispersion reflecting the renormalization effect at ~60 meV shows up similarly as in other hole-…
We report the first measurement of the optical phonon dispersion in optimally doped single layer Bi2Sr1.6La0.4Cu2O6+delta using inelastic x-ray scattering. We found a strong softening of the Cu-O bond stretching phonon at about q=(0.25,0,0) from 76 to 60 meV, similar to the one reported in other cuprates. A direct comparison with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements taken on the same sample, revealed an excellent agreement in terms of energy and momentum between the ARPES nodal kink and the soft part of the bond stretching phonon. Indeed, we find that the momentum space where…
We calculate the photoemission spectral response using the extracted $α^2F$ of Zhou et al (cond-mat/0405130) as an input and we find that the reported Re$Σ$ has more strucure than physically possible. Therefore, the "fine structure" most likely reflects the experimental noise.
We performed an optical spectroscopy study on single crystals of Pr$_{0.85}$LaCe$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ (PLCCO) to revisit the electron-hole asymmetry, which has been understood as a fundamental property of cuprates. Four differently annealed samples - as-grown, reduced, optimally oxygenated, and over-oxygenated samples - were prepared, which have superconducting transition temperatures, $T_c$ = 0, 15, 24, and 18 K, respectively. We observed that low-energy quasiparticle spectral weights of all the PLCCO samples are significantly small in comparison with those of other electron-doped cuprate fami…
We have investigated the doping and temperature dependences of the pseudogap/superconducting gap in the single-layer cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The results clearly exhibit two distinct energy and temperature scales, namely, the gap around ($π$,0) of magnitude $Δ^*$ and the gap around the node characterized by the d-wave order parameter $Δ_0$, like the double-layer cuprate Bi2212. In comparison with Bi2212 having higher $T_c$'s, $Δ_0$ is smaller, while $Δ^*$ and $T^*$ are similar. This result suggests that $Δ^*$ and $T^*$ are approximately mate…
Using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy in pulsed magnetic fields up to 31 T, we measure the terahertz optical conductivity in an optimally-doped thin film of the high temperature superconducting cuprate La$_{1.84}$Sr$_{0.16}$CuO$_4$. We observe systematic changes in the circularly-polarized complex optical conductivity that are consistent with cyclotron absorption of p-type charge carriers characterized by a cyclotron mass of $4.9\pm 0.8$ $m_{\rm e}$, and a scattering rate that increases with magnetic field. These results open the door to studies aimed at characterizing the degree to which e…
We report on current-voltage measurements of the zero-field normal-superconducting phase transition in thin films of Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4-y}$ as a function of doping. We find that the small size of the critical regime in these materials ($\approx 25$ mK) gives rise to mean-field behavior at the phase transition with a static exponent of $ν\approx 0.5$ for all dopings (in contrast to hole-doped $\mathrm{YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ}}$). We also find mean-field behavior in the dynamic exponent $z$. This indicates that Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4-y}$ behaves similarly to conventional superconductors in con…
The excitations responsible for producing high-temperature superconductivity in the cuprates have not been identified. Two promising candidates are collective spin excitations and phonons. A recent argument against spin excitations has been their inability to explain structures seen in electronic spectroscopies such as photoemission and tunnelling. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to demonstrate that collective spin excitations in optimally doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ are more structured than previously thought. The excitations have a two component structure with a low-frequency …
We have performed a detailed study of Cu $2p$ core-level spectra in single layer La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$, La doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) and bilayer Bi$_2$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) high-temperature superconductors by using hard x-ray photoemission (HX-PES). We identify the Cu$^{2+}$ derived (i) the Zhang-Rice singlet (ZRS) feature, (ii) the $d^{n+1}\underline{L}$ (ligand screened) feature, (iii) the $d^{n}$ satellite feature, as well as the hole-doping derived high binding energy feature in the main peak. In Bi-based cuprates, intensities of the $d^{n}$ …
We have revisited the magnetic penetration depth data on the electron-doped cuprates Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-y) and La(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-y). It is proposed that the transition between the nodal-gap-like and nodeless-gap-like behaviors upon electron-doping [see, e.g., M. Kim et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 87001 (2003)] can be due to a scattering of the quasiparticles in the d-wave superconducting state by an incipient or weak antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave. This conjecture is supported by the inelastic neutron scattering and angle-resolved photoemission experiments on some closely related electron-do…
Charge order in underdoped and optimally doped high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ superconductors Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) is investigated by Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). We have directly observed charge density modulation in the optimally doped Bi2201 at momentum transfer $Q_{\|} \simeq 0.23$ rlu, with smaller intensity and correlation length with respect to the underdoped sample. This demonstrates that short-range charge order in Bi2201 persists up to optimal doping, as in other hole-doped cuprates. We explored the nodal (diagonal) direction and found no cha…
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission and core-level x-ray photoemission studies of the single-layer cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) and revealed the doping evolution of the electronic structure from the lightly-doped to optimally-doped regions. We have observed the formation of the dispersive quasi-particle band, evolution of the Fermi ``arc'' into the Fermi surface and the shift of the chemical potential with hole doping as in other cuprates. The doping evolution in Bi2201 is similar to that in Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_{x}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_2$ (Na-CCOC), where a rapid chemical po…
The representative cuprate, La$_{2-x}$M$_x$CuO$_4$, with M = Sr and $x = 1/8$ is studied via first-principles calculations in the high-temperature tetragonal (HTT), low-temperature orthorhombic (LTO), and low-temperature less-orthorhombic (LTLO) structures. By suppressing the magnetism and superconductivity, the LTLO phase, which has rarely been observed in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, is found to be the ground state, where the structural phase transitions, HTT$\rightarrow$LTO$\rightarrow$LTLO, can be understood via phonon instability. While the La-O composition is identified to be responsible for…
We study the superconducting(SC)-gap anisotropy of the Γ-centered hole Fermi surface in optimally doped FeTe_{0.6}Se_{0.4} (T_c = 14.5 K), using laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We observe sharp superconducting coherence peaks at T = 2.5 K. In contrast to earlier ARPES studies but consistent with thermodynamic results, the momentum dependence shows a \cos(4φ) modulation of the SC-gap anisotropy. The observed SC-gap anisotropy strongly indicates that the pairing interaction is not a conventional phonon-mediated isotropic one. Instead, the results suggest the impo…
Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies of the overdoped cuprate superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ find only small changes in the near nodal electron self energy over a spectral range of several hundred meV as the doping increases from x=0.2 to x=0.3 and the superconducting transition temperature T_c decreases from 32K to 0K. These measurements put constraints on the structure of the electron-electron interaction. Here we show that a spin-fluctuation interaction leads to behavior which is consistent with these experimental results.
Using high-energy diffraction we show that a 4-unit-cell superstructure, q0=(1/4,0,0), along the shorter Cu-Cu bonds coexists with superconductivity in optimally doped YBCO. A complex set of anisotropic atomic displacements on neighboring CuO chain planes, BaO planes, and CuO2 planes, respectively, correlated over ~3-6 unit cells gives rise to diffuse superlattice peaks. Our observations are consistent with the presence of Ortho-IV nanodomains containing these displacements.
Angle-dependent magnetoresistance measurements are used to determine the isotropic and anisotropic components of the transport scattering rate in overdoped Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ for a range of $T_c$ values between 15K and 35K. The size of the anisotropic scattering term is found to scale linearly with $T_c$, establishing a link between the superconducting and normal state physics. Comparison with results from angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy indicates that the transport and quasiparticle lifetimes are distinct.
We present angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) data on Na-doped Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$. We demonstrate that the chemical potential shifts upon doping the system across the insulator to metal transition. The resulting low energy spectra reveal a gap structure which appears to deviate from the canonical $d_{x2-y2} ~ |cos(k_x a)-cos(k_y a)|$ form. To reconcile the measured gap structure with d-wave superconductivity one can understand the data in terms of two gaps, a very small one contributing to the nodal region and a very large one dominating the anti-nodal region. The latter is a result of the …
Magnetic excitations in the optimally doped high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ superconductor Bi$_{1.5}$Pb$_{0.55}$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (OP-Bi2201, $T_\mathrm{c}\simeq 34$ K) are investigated by Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), below and above the pseudogap opening temperature. At both temperatures the broad spectral distribution disperses along the (1,0) direction up to $\sim$350~meV at zone boundary, similarly to other hole-doped cuprates. However, above $\sim$0.22 reciprocal lattice units, we observe a concurrent intensity decrease for magnetic excitations and quasi-ela…
Phonons in nearly optimally doped HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ were studied by inelastic X-ray scattering. The dispersion of the low energy modes is well described by a shell model, while the Cu-O bond stretching mode at high energy shows strong softening towards the zone boundary, which deviates strongly from the model. This seems to be common in the hole-doped high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ superconducting cuprates, and, based on this work, not related to a lattice distortion specific to each material.
Recent angle resolved photoemission spectrascope (ARPES) experiments on strongly underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ cuprates have reported an unusual gap in the nodal direction. Transport experiments on these cuprates found variable range hopping behavior observed. These cuprates have both electron and hole doping which has led to proposals that this cuprate is analogous to a partially compensated semiconductors. The nodal gap then corresponds to the Efros-Schklovskii(ES) gap in such semiconductors. We calculate the doping dependence and temperature dependence of a ES gap model and f…
We develop a path-integral theory to study the angle-resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) of high-T_c superconductors based on a two-dimensional model for the CuO2 conduction plane, including both electron-electron (e-e) and electron-phonon (e-ph) interactions. Comparing our result with the experimental one of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8, we find that the experimentally observed isotopic band shift in ARPES is due to the off-diagonal quadratic e-ph coupling, whereas the presence of e-e repulsion partially suppresses this effect.
We have performed a temperature-dependent angle-integrated photoemission study of lightly-doped to heavily-overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ and oxygen-doped La$_2$CuO$_{4.10}$. We found that both the magnitude $Δ$* of the (small) pseudogap and the temperature \textit{T}* at which the pseudogap is opened increases with decreasing hole concentration, consistent with previous studies. On the other hand, the superconducting gap $Δ_{sc}$ was found to remain small for decreasing hole concentration. The results can be explained if the superconducting gap opens only on the Fermi arc around the noda…
We present a photoemission study of La$_{0.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4}$ with doping level $x$=1/8, where the charge carriers are expected to order forming static stripes. Though the local probes in direct space seem to be consistent with this idea, there has been little evidence found for such ordering in quasiparticle dispersions. We show that the Fermi surface topology of the 1/8 compound develops notable deviations from that observed for La$_{2- x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4}$ in a way consistent with the FS reconstruction expected for the scattering on the antiphase stripe order.
We have carried out extensive first principles doping-dependent computations of angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) intensities in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) over a wide range of binding energies. Intercell hopping and the associated 3-dimensionality, which is usually neglected in discussing cuprate physics, is shown to play a key role in shaping the ARPES spectra. Despite the obvious importance of strong coupling effects (e.g. the presence of a lower Hubbard band coexisting with mid-gap states in the doped insulator), we show that a number of salient features of the experimental ARPES sp…
Samples of Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4), an electron-doped high temperature superconducting cuprate (HTSC), near optimal doping at x = 0.155 were measured via angle resolved photoemission (ARPES). We report a renormalization feature in the self energy ("kink") in the band dispersion at 50 - 60 meV present in nodal and antinodal cuts across the Fermi surface. Specifically, while the kink had previously only been seen in the antinodal region, it is now observed also in the nodal region, reminiscent of what has been observed in hole-doped cuprates.
Lightly-doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ in the so-called "insulating" spin-glass/diagonal-stripe phase has been studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A quasi-particle (QP) peak crossing the Fermi level has been observed in the node direction of the d-wave superconducting gap, forming an "arc" of Fermi surface consistent with the recently observed metallic transport behavior at high temperatures of lightly-doped materials. The spectral weight of the nodal QP smoothly increases with hole doping, corresponding to the $n \sim x$ behavior of the carrier number in the underdoped and li…
The electron dynamics in the CuO chains has been elusive in Y-Ba-Cu-O cuprate systems by means of standard angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES); cleaved sample exhibits areas terminated by both CuO-chain or BaO layers, and the size of a typical beam results in ARPES signals that are superposed from both terminations. Here, we employ spatially-resolved ARPES with submicrometric beam (nano-ARPES) to reveal the surface-termination-dependent electronic structures of the double CuO chains in YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$. We present the first observation of sharp metallic dispersions and Fermi su…
The anisotropic properties of an optimally doped Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-δ} single crystal have been studied both below and above the critical temperature Tc via the resistivity measurement in magnetic field H up to 12 T. By scaling the conductivity fluctuation around the superconducting transition, the upper critical field H_{c2}(T) has been determined for field parallel to the c-axis or to the basal ab-plane. The anisotropy factor γ={H_c2||ab}/{H_c2||c} is estimated to be about 8. In the normal state (50=<T=<180 K), the magnetoresistance (MR) basically follows an H^2 dependence and for H||c…
We investigate the electronic dynamics in the underdoped cuprates focusing on the effects of one-dimensional charge stripes. We address recent experimental Angular-Resolved Photoemission Spectra results on (La$_{1.28}$Nd$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.12}$)CuO$_4$. We find that various inhomogeneous models can account for the distribution of quasiparticle weights close to momentum ${\bf k}=(π,0)$ and symmetry related points. The observed flat dispersion region around the same ${\bf k}$ point can only be addressed by certain classes of those inhomogeneous models which locally break spin symmetry. Homogeneous mo…
We present conductance-voltage (G-V) data for point contact junctions between a normal metal and the electron doped cuprate superconductor Pr{2-x}Ce{x}CuO4 (PCCO). We observe a zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) for the under-doped composition of this cuprate (x=0.13) which is consistent with d-wave pairing symmetry. For optimally-doped (x=0.15) and over-doped (x=0.17) PCCO, we find that the G-V characteristics indicate the presence of an order parameter without nodes. We investigate this further by obtaining point contact spectroscopy data for different barrier strengths and as a function of m…
For electron-doped cuprates, the strong suppression of antiferromagnetic spin correlation by efficient reduction annealing by the "protect-annealing" method leads to superconductivity not only with lower Ce concentrations but also with higher transition temperatures. To reveal the nature of this superconducting state, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of protect-annealed electron-doped superconductors Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ and directly investigated the superconducting gap. The gap was found to be consistent with $d$-wave symmetry, sugges…
High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on underdoped (La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$)CuO$_4$ system show that, at energies below 70 meV, the quasiparticle peak is well defined around the ($π$/2,$π$/2) nodal region and disappears rather abruptly when the momentum is changed from the nodal point to the ($π$,0) antinodal point along the underlying ``Fermi surface''. It indicates that there is an extra low energy scattering mechanism acting upon the antinodal quasiparticles. We propose that this mechanism is the scattering of quasiparticles across the nearly parallel segments of the Fermi sur…
