We report the resistivity of a series of fluorine-doped SmFeAsO1-xFx polycrystalline superconductors in magnetic fields up to 60T. For underdoped samples (x < 0.15), the low temperature resistive state is characterized by pronounced magneto-resistance and a resistive upturn at low temperatures. The "insulating behavior" is characterized by a log-T divergence observed over a decade in temperature. In contrast, the normal state for samples with doping x > 0.15 display metallic behavior with little magnetoresistance, where intense magnetic fields broaden the superconducting transition rather than suppress Tc. The location of the insulator-to metal crossover coincides with the reported suppression of the structural phase transition (SPT)in the phase diagram for SmFeAsO1-xFx series.
We succeeded in growing single crystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx with exceptionally high fluorine concentration by using a CsCl flux method. Comparing to conventional flux methods, this method can introduce about double the amount of fluorine into the oxygen site. The obtained single crystal shows the highest superconducting transition temperature (Tc = 57.5 K) in single crystalline iron pnictides. In addition, the residual resistivity ratio (RRR) is almost three times as large as that of previously reported single crystals. This suggests that our single crystals are suitable for investigation of the i…
We obtained amorphous-FeAs-free SmFeAsO1-xFx using a low temperature sintering with slow cooling. SmFeAsO1-xFx is sintered at 980 °C for 40 hours and cooled slowly down to 600 °C. The low temperature sintering suppresses the formation of amorphous FeAs, and the slow cooling introduces much fluorine into SmFeAsO1-xFx. The superconductivity of this sample appears at 57.8 K and the superconducting volume fraction reaches 96 %. To study the change of fluorine concentration during the cooling process, samples are quenched by water at 950 °C, 900 °C, 850 °C, 800 °C, 750 °C and 700 °C. It is found th…
The Phase diagram of SmFeAsO1-xFx in terms of x is exhibited in this study. SmFeAsO1-xFx from x = 0 to x = 0.3 were prepared by low temperature sintering with slow cooling. The low temperature sintering suppresses the formation of the amorphous FeAs, which is inevitably produced as an impurity by using high temperature sintering. Moreover, slow cooling is effective to obtain the high fluorine concentration. The compositional change from feedstock composition is quite small after this synthesis. We can reproducibly observe a record superconducting transition for an iron based superconductor at …
We have investigated the fluorine-doping dependence of lattice constants, transports and specific heat for polycrystalline LaFePO1-xFx. F doping slightly and monotonically decreases the in-plane lattice parameter. In the normal state, electrical resistivity at low temperature is proportional to the square of temperature and the electronic specific heat coefficient has large value, indicating the existence of moderate electron-electron correlation in this system. Hall coefficient has large magnitude, and shows large temperature dependence, indicating the low carrier density and multiple carrier…
Raman spectra of polycrystalline NdFeAsO1-xFx (x=0.0, 0.1, 0.2) compound have been systematically investigated as functions of temperature and fluorine concentration. Scanning electron microscopic and Raman microscopic characterization demonstrates that the polycrystalline samples mainly contain two phases, i.e. superconductor NdFeAsO1-xFx compound and a MnP-type FeAs phase, with dissimilar characteristic Raman bands. It was found that fluorine doping leads to structure disorder in the insulator Nd-O layers and high temperature coefficient of Fe-As vibrational mode.
The electrical resistivity (Rxx) and Hall resistivity (Rxy) of LaFeAsO1-xFx have been measured over a wide fluorine doping range 0 =< x =< 0.14 using 60 T pulsed magnets. While the superconducting phase diagram (Tc, x) displays the classic dome-shaped structure, we find that the resistive upper critical field (Hc2) increases monotonically with decreasing fluorine concentration, with the largest Hc2 >= 75 T for x = 0.05. This is reminiscent of the composition dependence in high-Tc cuprates and might correlate with opening of a pseudo-gap in the underdoped region. Further, the temperature depend…
We report on the synthesis and microstructural studies of fluorine based iron doped superconductors. We have successfully synthesized the fluorine based new superconducting material LaO1-xFxFeAs by choosing comparatively lower temperature and longer synthesis duration. The superconducting transition temperature that we have achieved is 27.5 K which is observed at doping level of x=0.2. The structural microstructural characterizations have been done by employing XRD, SEM and TEM techniques. The SEM and TEM micrographs reveal the layered structure.
Polycrystalline samples of RO1-xFxFeAs (0 < x < 0.25) (R = La, Sm, Gd) were investigated by wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (WDX) in the electron microscope to determine the composition of the samples, in particular the fluorine content. It was found that the measured fluorine content can deviate considerably from the initial weight. In the lanthanum compound LaO1-xFxFeAs, we found good agreement mainly for x > 0.05, but for x < 0.05 the fluorine hardly goes into the sample. For the samarium compound we measured less than half the fluorine in the sample as initially weighed at all flu…
WO3-xFx (x < 0.45) perovskite-like oxyfluorides were prepared by a chemically reducing fluorination route using the polymer polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon). The symmetry of the crystal structures of WO3-xFx changes from monoclinic to tetragonal to cubic as the fluorine content increases. Fluorine doping changes insulating WO3 to a metallic conductor, and superconductivity (Tc = 0.4 K) was discovered in the samples with fluorine contents of 0.41 < x < 0.45. This easy fluorination method may be applicable to other systems and presents an opportunity for finding new oxyfluoride superconductors.
We report on the synthesis and structural/ microstructural studies of iron based fluorine doped LaOFeAs superconductors. We have successfully synthesized fluorine doped superconducting LaO1-xFxFeAs materials by choosing lower temperature (1150^0C) and longer synthesis duration (60 hours) as compared to the standard values of these employed in the pioneering first contribution [Kamihara et al 2008 J Am Chem Soc 130 3296]. Decrease of lattice parameters as determined by x-ray diffraction confirm the substitution of fluorine. The superconducting transition temperature is 27.5 K which is observed …
A series of SmFeAsO1-xFx samples were sintered in quartz tubes filled with air of different pressures. The effects of the sintering atmosphere on the superconductivity were systematically investigated. The SmFeAsO1-xFx system maintains a transition temperature (Tc) near 50 K until the concentration of oxygen in quartz tubes increases to a certain threshold, after which Tc decreases dramatically. Fluorine losses, whether due to vaporization, reactions with starting materials, and reactions with oxygen, proved to be detrimental to the superconductivity of this material. The deleterious effects o…

We have investigated the high-temperature thermoelectric properties of the layered compound LaO1-xFxBiS2. The electrical resistivity of LaOBiS2 showed an anomalous behavior; a metal-semiconductor transition was observed around 270 K. It was found that the value of the electrical resistivity decreased with F substitution. The Seebeck coefficient decreased with increasing F concentration. The highest power factor of 1.9 W/cmK2 at 480 C was obtained for LaOBiS2.
We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of crystal field transitions in PrFeAsO, PrFeAsO0.87F0.13, and NdFeAsO0.85F0.15. Doping with fluorine produces additional crystal field excitations, providing evidence that there are two distinct charge environments around the rare earth ions, with probabilities that are consistent with a random distribution of dopants on the oxygen sites. The 4f electrons of the Pr3+ and Nd3+ ions have non-magnetic and magnetic ground states, respectively, indicating that the enhancement of Tc compared to LaFeAsO1-xFx is not due to rare earth magnetism.
We have studied the structural and electronic phase diagrams of CeFeAsO1-xFx and SmFeAsO1-xFx by a detailed analysis of muon spin relaxation experiments, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, electrical resistivity, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility measurements (Full abstract in the main document).
We use neutron scattering to study the structural and magnetic phase transitions in the iron pnictides CeFeAsO1-xFx as the system is tuned from a semimetal to a high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) superconductor through Fluorine (F) doping x. In the undoped state, CeFeAsO develops a structural lattice distortion followed by a stripe like commensurate antiferromagnetic order with decreasing temperature. With increasing Fluorine doping, the structural phase transition decreases gradually while the antiferromagnetic order is suppressed before the appearance of superconductivity, resulting an el…
We present data of multi harmonic magneto-dynamic experiments. In particular, we performed ac magnetic susceptibility experiments on layered pnictide-oxide quaternary compound NdOFeAs doped with fluorine. The experiments allow measure the critical temperature and probe the flux dynamic behavior using the third harmonic component of the ac susceptibility of a NdF0.16FeAsO0.84 bulk sample as a function of temperature and frequency of the applied ac magnetic fields. Measured signals are connected with the non-linear superconducting flux dynamic behavior and are characterized by a flux critical st…
Here we report the superconductivity in the iron-based oxyarsenide Sm[O1-xFx]FeAs, with the onset resistivity transition temperature at 55.0 K and Meissner transition at 54.6 K. This compound has the same crystal structure as LaOFeAs with shrunk crystal lattices, and becomes the superconductor with the highest critical temperature among all materials besides copper oxides.
First-principles calculations were performed to investigate the electronic structure and the Fermi surface of the newly discovered low-temperature superconductor: fluorine-doped WO3. We find that F doping provides the transition of the insulating tungsten trioxide into a metallic-like phase WO3-xFx, where the near-Fermi states are formed mainly from W 5d with admixture of O 2p orbitals. The cooperative effect of fluorine additives in WO3 consists in change of electronic concentration as well as the lattice constant. At probing their influence on the near-Fermi states separately, the dominant r…
The fluorine-doped rare-earth iron oxyarsenides, REFeAsO1-xFx (RE =rare earth) have recently emerged as a new family of high-temperature superconductors with transition temperatures (Tc) as high as 55 K (refs 1-4). Early work has provided compelling evidence that the undoped parent materials exhibit spin-density-wave (SDW) antiferromagnetic order and undergo a structural phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic crystal symmetry upon cooling.5 Both the magnetic and structural instabilities are suppressed upon doping with fluoride ions before the appearance of superconductivity.6,7 Here …
We report the results from resistivity and magnetic measurements on polycrystalline Ce oxypnictide (CeFeAsO1-xFx) samples where x spans from 0.13 to 0.25. We find that the orbital limiting field is as high as 150 T and it systematically decreases with increasing doping. The Maki parameter is greater than one across the phase diagram and the large Maki parameter suggests that orbital and Pauli limiting effects contribute to the upper critical field. The broadening of the superconducting transition in the resistivity data was interpreted using the thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) model where…
SmFeAsO1-xFx tapes were prepared using three kinds of starting materials. It shows that the starting materials have an obvious effect on the impurity phases in final superconducting tapes. Compared with the other samples, the samples fabricated by SmAs, FeO, Fe2As, and SmF3 have the smallest arsenide impurity phase and voids. As a result, these samples possess much denser structure and better grain connectivity. Moreover, among the three kinds of samples fabricated in this work, this kind of sample has the highest zero-resistivity temperature ~40 K and largest critical current density ~4600 A/…
We show that the zero field normal-state resistivity above Tc for various levels of electron doping-both for underdoped, optimally, and overdoped LaO1-xFxFeAs, i.e. (x=0.05-0.075 and 0.1-0.2) and underdoped SmO1-xFxFeAs (x=0.06- 0.1) members of the 1111-iron-pnictide superconductor family-can be scaled in a broad temperature range from 20 to 300 K onto a single universal curve. The scaling was performed using the energy scale Delta, the resistivity rho(Delta) and the residual resistivity rho0 as scaling parameters as well as applying a recently proposed model-independent scaling method (H. G. …
The recently discovered quaternary arsenide oxide superconductor La[O1-xFx]FeAs with the superconducting critical transition temperature (Tc) of 26 K [1], has been quickly expanded to another high-Tc superconducting system beyond copper oxides by the replacement of La with other rare earth elements, such as Sm, Ce, and Pr etc. [2-4], and the Pr[O1-xFx]FeAs has become to be the first non-cuprate superconductor that holding a Tc above 50 K. All these arsenide (including phosphide) superconductors formed in a same tetragonal layered structure with the space group P4/nmm which has an alternant sta…
Since the discovery of copper oxide superconductor in 1986 [1], extensive efforts have been devoted to the search of new high-Tc superconducting materials, especially high-Tc systems other than cuprates. The recently discovered quaternary superconductor La[O1-xFx]FeAs with the superconducting critical transition Tc of 26 K [2], which has a much simple layered structure compared with cuprates, has attracted quick enthusiasm and is going to become a new high-Tc system [3-6]. Here we report the discovery of bulk superconductivity in the praseodymium-arsenide oxides Pr[O1-xFx]FeAs with an onset dr…
The F doped LaFeAsO, a recently discovered superconductor with the high Tc of 26 K, has been studied by the resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements in the F doping range from 0 to 0.14 (x in LaFeAsO1-xFx). In the low temperature region, a T3lnT term in the heat capacity and a T2 term in the magnetic susceptibility, which are derived from the spin fluctuation, are observed. The nearly ferromagnetic nature evidenced by a large Wilson ratio (6.5 for x = 0, and 11.2 for x = 0.025) suggests that the superconductivity in the LaFeAsO system is mediated by ferromagnetic sp…
We report measurements of resistivity, magnetoresistivity, Hall effect, Seebeck coefficient, infrared reflectivity of undoped SmFeAsO and lightly doped SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) oxypnictides. All the properties measured on SmFeAsO are characterized by clear signatures of the magnetic instability. A self-consistent picture emerges in which below the magnetic transition carrier condensation occurs due to the opening of spin density wave (SDW) gap. This is accompanied by the mobility increase of not gapped carriers due to the suppression of electron-electron scattering. SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) exhibits an in…
Colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) is a rare phenomenon in which the electronic resistivity of a material can be decreased by orders of magnitude upon application of a magnetic field. Such an effect could be the basis of the next generation of magnetic memory devices. Here we report CMR in the antiferromagnetic oxypnictide NdMnAsO1-xFx as a result of competition between an antiferromagnetic insulating phase with strong electron correlations and a paramagnetic semiconductor upon application of a magnetic field. The discovery of CMR in antiferromagnetic Mn2+ oxypnictide materials could open up an …
The magnetic and transport behaviors of cerium substituted iron oxy-arsenide superconductor with x = 0.1 to 0.4 fluoride (F) doping have been investigated in this report. Temperature dependent susceptibility and resistivity measurements showed the 0.1 F-doped sample (CeFeAsO0.9F0.1) has a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of around 30 K. With increasing doping beyond x = 0.2 Tc saturates to around 40 K. Temperature dependent susceptibility measured in different magnetic fields for the under-doped sample showed Meissner effect in low field and the diamagnetism is still visible up to 1…
NdFeAs(O,F) thin films having different fluorine contents were grown on 5 deg. or 10 deg. vicinal cut MgO and CaF2 single crystalline substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. Structural characterisations by reflection high-energy electron diffraction and x-ray diffraction confirmed the epitaxial growth of NdFeAs(O,F). The resistivities of the ab-plane and along the c-axis were derived from the resistivity measurements in the longitudinal and transversal directions. The c-axis resistivity was always higher than the ab-plane resistivity, resulting from the anisotropic electronic structure. The resi…
In high-transition temperature (high-Tc) copper oxides, it is generally believed that antiferromagnetism plays a fundamental role in the superconducting mechanism because superconductivity occurs when mobile electrons or holes are doped into the antiferromagnetic parent compounds. The recent discovery of superconductivity in the rare-earth (R) iron-based oxide systems [RO1-xFxFeAs] has generated enormous interest because these materials are the first noncopper oxide superconductors with Tc exceeding 50 K. The parent (nonsuperconducting) LaOFeAs material is metallic but shows anomalies near 150…
A review of our investigations on single crystals of LnFeAsO1-xFx (Ln=La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) and Ba1-xRbxFe2As2 is presented. A high pressure technique has been applied for the growth of LnFeAsO1-xFx crystals, while Ba1-xRbxFe2As2 crystals were grown using quartz ampoule method. Single crystals were used for electrical transport, structure, magnetic torque and spectroscopic studies. Investigations of the crystal structure confirmed high structural perfection and show less than full occupation of the (O, F) position in superconducting LnFeAsO1-xFx crystals. Resistivity measurements on LnFeAsO1-xFx…
Bulk polycrystalline samples, SmFeAsO and the iso-structural superconducting SmFeAsO0.80F0.20 are explored through resistivity with temperature under magnetic field ρ(T, H), AC and DC magnetization (M-T), and Specific heat (Cp) measurements. The Resistivity measurement shows superconductivity for x = 0.20 sample with Tc(onset) ~ 51.7K. The upper critical field, [Hc2(0)] is estimated ~3770kOe by Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory. Broadening of superconducting transition in magneto transport is studied through thermally activated flux flow in applied field up to 130 kOe. The flux flow activation energ…

We have synthesized oxygen-deficient fluorine-doped samples of nominal composition PrFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_y$ to study the normal and superconducting state properties. Resistivity of undoped PrFeAsO exhibits a strong anomaly at around 155 K due to the spin-density-wave instability. Fluorine doping ($x$=0.4, $y$=0.12) suppresses this magnetic instability and drives the system to the superconducting ground state with superconducting onset temperature 50 K. The behavior of normal-state resistivity changes from $T^2$-like to $T$-linear to sublinear in $T$ with increasing temperature indicating that both…
Single crystals of the LnFeAsO (Ln1111, Ln = Pr, Nd, and Sm) family with lateral dimensions up to 1 mm were grown from NaAs and KAs flux at high pressure. The crystals are of good structural quality and become superconducting when O is partially substituted by F (PrFeAsO1-xFx and NdFeAsO1-xFx) or when Fe is substituted by Co (SmFe1-xCoxAsO). From magnetization measurements, we estimate the temperature dependence and anisotropy of the upper critical field and the critical current density of underdoped PrFeAsO0.7F0.3 crystal with Tc = 25 K. Single crystals of SmFe1-xCoxAsO with maximal Tc up to …
We report transport properties for layered BiCh2-based (Ch = S, Se) superconductors LaO1-xFxBiS2-ySey (x = 0.2, 0.5, y = 0-1.05) and the observation of weak antilocalization (WAL). Electrical resistivity and Hall coefficients for the Se-poor samples increase with decreasing temperature. The increase becomes less pronounced with increasing Se concentration indicating a loss of insulating behavior. Interestingly, the moderately Se-substituted samples exhibit metallic behavior in the high-temperature region and a weak increase in the resistivity in the low-temperature regions, which indicates the…
We present transport and superconducting properties - namely resistivity, magnetoresistivity, Hall effect, Seebeck effect, thermal conductivity, upper critical field - of two different families of Fe-based superconductors, which can be viewed in many respects as end members: SmFeAs(O1-xFx) with the largest Tc and the largest anisotropy and Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex), with the largest Hc2, the lowest Tc and the lowest anisotropy. In the case of the SmFeAs(O1-xFx) series, we find that a single band description allows to extract an approximated estimation of band parameters such as carrier density and mobi…
F-doped LaOBiSe$_{2}$ superconducting single crystals with typical size of 2$\times$4$\times$0.2 mm$^{3}$ are successfully grown by flux method and the superconducting properties are studied. Both the superconducting transition temperature and the shielding volume fraction are effectively improved with fluorine doping. The LaO$_{0.48}$F$_{0.52}$BiSe$_{1.93}$ sample exhibits zero-resistivity at 3.7 K, which is higher than that of the LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiSe$_{2}$ polycrystalline sample (2.4K). Bulk superconductivity is confirmed by a clear specific-heat jump at the associated temperature. The …
By using solid state reaction method we have fabricated the hole doped $La_{1-x}Sr_xFeAsO$ superconductors with Sr content up to 0.13. It is found that the sharp anomaly at about 150 K and the low temperature upturn of resistivity are suppressed by doping holes into the parent phase. Interestingly both the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ and the lattice constants (a-axis and c-axis) increase monotonously with hole concentration, in sharp contrast with the electron doped side where the $T_c$ increases with a continuing shrinkage of the lattice constants either by dope more fluorine…
We report the Hall resistivity, $ρ_{xy}$ of polycrystalline SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ for four different fluorine concentrations from the onset of superconductivity through the collapse of the structural phase transition. For the two more highly-doped samples, $ρ_{xy}$ is linear in magnetic field up to 50 T with only weak temperature dependence, reminiscent of a simple Fermi liquid. For the lightly-doped samples with $x<0.15$, we find a low temperature regime characterized $ρ_{xy}(H)$ being both non-linear in magnetic field and strongly temperature dependent even though the Hall angle is small. T…
The fluorine-doped rare-earth iron oxypnictide series SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ (0 $\leq x \leq$ 0.10) was investigated with high resolution powder x-ray scattering. In agreement with previous studies, the parent compound SmFeAsO exhibits a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural distortion at T$\rm{_{S}}$~=~130~K which is rapidly suppressed by $x \simeq$ 0.10 deep within the superconducting dome. The change in unit cell symmetry is followed by a previously unreported magnetoelastic distortion at 120~K. The temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient $α_{V}$ reveals a rich phase diagr…
