We made electrical transport measurements along the c-axis of SmFeAsO0.85 single crystals, in both three- and four-terminal configurations, focusing on examining the possible formation of Josephson coupling between FeAs superconducting layers. Anisotropic bulk superconductivity was observed along the c-axis, but without Josephson coupling, as confirmed by the absence of both the hysteresis in current-voltage curves and the modulation of the critical current by the in-plane magnetic fields. The variation of the critical currents for different magnetic-field directions gives the anisotropy ratio of 5. This three-dimensional electronic structure of our iron pnictide superconductors is in clear contrast to the two-dimensional one observed in the cuprate superconductors, another stacked superconducting system.
We calculate exactly the Josephson current for $c$-axis coherent tunneling between two layered superconductors, each with internal coherent tight-binding intra- and interlayer quasiparticle dispersions. Our results also apply when one or both of the superconductors is a bulk material, and include the usually neglected effects of surface states. For weak tunneling, our results reduce to our previous results derived using the tunneling Hamiltonian. Our results are also correct for strong tunneling. However, the $c$-axis tunneling results of Tanaka and Kashiwaya are shown to be incorrect in any l…
We calculate the critical current density $J^J_c$ for c-axis Josephson tunneling between identical high temperature superconductors twisted an angle $ϕ_0$ about the c-axis. We model the tunneling matrix element squared as a Gaussian in the change of wavevector q parallel to the junction, $<|t({\bf q})|^2>\propto\exp(-{\bf q}^2a^2/2π^2σ^2)$. The $J^J_c(ϕ_0)/J^J_c(0)$ obtained for the s- and extended-s-wave order parameters (OP's) are consistent with the Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ data of Li {\it et al.}, but only for strongly incoherent tunneling, $σ^2\ge0.25$. A $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave OP is alw…
Atomically precise epitaxial structures are unique systems for tunneling spectroscopy that minimize extrinsic effects of disorder. We present a systematic tunneling spectroscopy study, over a broad doping, temperature, and bias range, in epitaxial c-axis La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$/La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$/La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ heterostructures. The behavior of these superconductor/insulator/superconductor (SIS) devices is unusual. Down to 20 mK there is complete suppression of c-axis Josephson critical current with a barrier of only 2 nm of La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$, and the zero-bias conductance rema…
The optimally doped and underdoped region of the $t-J$ model at large N (N is the number of spin components) is governed by the competition of d-wave superconductivity (SC) and a d Charge-Density Wave (d-CDW).The partial destruction of the Fermi surface by the d-CDW and the resulting density of states are discussed. Furthermore, c-axis conductances for incoherent and coherent tunneling are calculated, considering both an isotropic and an anisotropic in-plane momentum dependence of the hopping matrix element between the planes. The influence of self-energy effects on the conductances is also co…
The Josephson Plasma Resonance is used to study the c-axis supercurrent in the superconducting state of underdoped Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ with varying degrees of controlled point-like disorder, introduced by high-energy electron irradiation. As disorder is increased, the Josephson Plasma frequency decreases proportionally to the critical temperature. The temperature dependence of the plasma frequency does not depend on the irradiation dose, and is in quantitative agreement with a model for quantum fluctuations of the superconducting phase in the CuO$_{2}$ layers.
The c-axis tunneling matrix of high-Tc superconductors is shown to depend strongly on the in-plane momentum of electrons and vanish along the four nodal lines of the d(x^2-y^2)-wave energy gap. This anisotropic tunneling matrix suppresses completely the contribution of the most extended quasiparticles in the vortex core to the c-axis tunneling current and leads to a spectrum similar to that of a nodeless superconductor. Our results give a natural explanation of the absence of the zero bias peak as well as other features observed in the vortex tunneling spectra of high-Tc cuprates.
A theoretical model of c-axis transport properties in cuprates is proposed. Inter-plane and in-plane charge fluctuations make hopping between planes incoherent and diffusive (the in-plane momentum is not conserved after tunneling). The non-Drude optical conductivity $σ_c(ω)$ and the power-law temperature dependence of the {\it dc} conductivity are generically explained by the strong fluctuations excited in the process of tunneling. Several microscopic models of the charge fluctuation spectrum are considered.
Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy we examined the local density of states of thin c-axis La2-xSrxCuO4 films, over wide doping and temperature ranges. We found that the pseudogap exists only at doping levels lower than optimal. For x = 0.12, close to the 'anomalous' x = 1/8 doping level, a zero bias conductance peak was the dominant spectral feature, instead of the excepted V- shaped (c-axis tunneling) gap structure. We have established that this surprising effect cannot be explained by tunneling into (110) facets. Possible origins for this unique behavior are discussed.
We theoretically investigate the effect of various symmetries of the superconducting order parameter Delta(omega) on the normalized tunneling conductance of SIN junctions by directly solving the real-axis Eliashberg equations (EEs) for a half-filled infinite band, with the simplifying assumption mu*=0. We analyze six different symmetries of the order parameter: s, d, s+id, s+d, extended s and anisotropic s, by assuming that the spectral function alpha^{2}F(Omega) contains an isotropic part alpha^{2}F(Omega)_{is} and an anisotropic one, alpha^{2}F(Omega)_{an}, such that alpha^{2}F(Omega)_{an} =…
Inelastic tunneling through magnetically anisotropic molecules is studied theoretically in the presence of a strong magnetic field. Since the molecular orientation is not well controlled in tunneling experiments, we consider arbitrary angles between easy axis and field. This destroys all conservation laws except that of charge, leading to a rich fine structure in the differential conductance. Besides single molecules we also study monolayers of molecules with either aligned or random easy axes. We show that detailed information on the molecular transitions and orientations can be obtained from…
We have studied quasiparticle tunneling into atomically flat a-axis films of YBa2Cu3O7-d and DyBa2Cu3O7-d through epitaxial CaTiO3 barriers. The junction heterostructures were grown by oxide molecular beam epitaxy and were carefully optimized using in-situ monitoring techniques, resulting in unprecedented crystalline perfection of the superconductor/insulator interface. Below Tc, the tunneling conductance shows the evolution of a large unexpected asymmetrical feature near zero bias. This is evidence that superconducting YBCO crystals, atomically truncated along the lobe direction with a titana…
There is a clear discrepancy among the energy-gap values for different 90 K cuprates, inferred from tunneling measurements. By using the phase diagram for hole-doped cuprates we show that tunneling measurements performed on 90 K cuprates, simply, detect two different energy gaps: the pairing gap and the coherent gap, which are identical in conventional superconductors. We find that there are two reasons why tunneling measurements show in one cuprate exclusively the coherent gap while, in another cuprate, they show the pairing gap: (i) the number of CuO2 planes per unit cell in the cuprate, and…
We studied the c-axis transport of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) cross-whisker junctions formed by annealing ``naturally'' formed whisker junctions. These frequently appear during growth when the $ab$-faces of neighboring whiskers come in contact. We obtained Fraunhofer patterns of the cross-junction critical currents in a parallel magnetic field, and found a sharp increase in the quasiparticle tunneling conductance at $eV=50-60$ mV, indicating high junction quality. For our weak junctions, the interface critical current density is about 0.03 of the critical current density across the…
We have studied nodal tunneling into YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) films under magnetic fields. The films' orientation was such that the CuO2 planes were perpendicular to the surface with the a and b axis at 450 form the normal. The magnetic field was applied parallel to the surface and perpendicular to the CuO2 planes. The Zero Bias Conductance Peak (ZBCP) characteristic of nodal tunneling splits under the effect of surface currents produced by the applied fields. Measuring this splitting under different field conditions, zero field cooled and field cooled, reveals that these currents have different ori…
There is a consensus that superconductivity (SC) in cuprates is two-dimensional. It is widely believed that the long-range phase coherence appears at T_{c} due to the Josephson coupling between SC CuO_{2} (bi-, tri-, >...)layers. Recent T_{c} and resistivity measurements in Tl2212 as a function of applied pressure (Salvetat J.-P. et al., Europhys. Lett., 52 (2000) 584) show that the interlayer Josephson-coupling mechanism does not fit the data. Here we analyze data obtained in Andreev reflection, neutron scattering, microwave, muon spin relaxation, tunneling and resistivity measurements perfor…
We consider transport through a single-molecule magnet strongly coupled to metallic electrodes. We demonstrate that for half-integer spin of the molecule electron- and spin-tunneling \emph{cooperate} to produce both quantum tunneling of the magnetic moment and a Kondo effect in the linear conductance. The Kondo temperature depends sensitively on the ratio of the transverse and easy-axis anisotropies in a non-monotonic way. The magnetic symmetry of the transverse anisotropy imposes a selection rule on the total spin for the occurrence of the Kondo effect which deviates from the usual even-odd a…
Transport in metals with strongly anisotropic single-particle spectrum is studied. Coherent band transport in all directions, described by the standard Boltzmann equation, is shown to withstand both elastic and inelastic scattering as long as $E_Fτ\gg 1$. A model of phonon-assisted tunneling via resonant states located in between the layers is suggested to explain a non-monotonic temperature dependence of the c-axis resistivity observed in experiments.
We report the magnetotransport characteristics of a trilayer ferromagnetic tunnel junction build of an electron doped manganite (La_0.7Ce_0.3MnO_3) and a hole doped manganite (La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3). At low temperatures the junction exhibits a large positive tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR), irrespective of the bias voltage. At intermediate temperatures below T_C the sign of the TMR is dependent on the bias voltage across the junction. The magnetoresistive characteristics of the junction strongly suggest that La_0.7Ce_0.3MnO_3 is a minority spin carrier ferromagnet with a high degree of spin pola…
