Ag-sheathed SmFeAsO0.7F0.3 (Sm-1111) superconducting wires were prepared by a one-step solid state reaction at temperatures as low as 850~900C, instead of commonly used temperatures of 1150~1250C. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the as-sintered samples is well indexed on the basis of tetragonal ZrCuSiAs-type structure. We characterized transport critical current density Jc of the SmFeAsO0.7F0.3 wires in increasing and subsequently decreasing fields, by a resistive four-probe method. A transport Jc as high as ~1300 A/cm^2 at 4.2 K and self field has been observed for the first time in Sm-1111 type polycrystalline superconductors. The Jc also shows a rapid depression in small applied fields as well as a magnetic-history dependence, indicating weak-linked grain boundaries. The low-temperature synthesis method can be very beneficial to fabricating the RE-1111 iron oxynictides in a convenient and safe way.
In this contribution, different concepts for mechanically reinforced MgB2 wires with high transport currents are presented and characterised. It is shown that the achieved critical transport currents depend strongly on the conductor concept, the choice of the precursor route and the applied treatment method.
We report large transport critical current densities observed in Ag-added (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wires prepared by an ex-situ powder-in-tube (PIT) process. The wire has a simple composite structure sheathed only by Ag. A precursor bulk material prepared by a melting process was ground into powder and put into a Ag tube. The composite was then cold worked into a wire and heat treated at 850$^\circ$C for sintering. Transport critical current densities, Jc, at 4.2 K are 1.0\times104 A/cm2 (Ic = 60.7 A) in self field and 1.1\times103 A/cm2 (Ic = 6.6 A) in 10 T. These are the highest values r…
We prepared and characterized monofilamentary MgB2 wires with a mechanically reinforced composite sheath of Ta(Nb)/Cu/steel, which leads to dense filaments and correspondingly high transport currents up to Jc = 10^5 A/cm^2 at 4.2 K, self field. The reproducibility of the measured transport currents was excellent and not depending on the wire diameter. Using different precursors, commercial reacted powder or an unreacted Mg/B powder mixture, a strong influence on the pinning behaviour and the irreversibility field was observed. The critical transport current density showed a nearly linear tempe…
MgB2 tapes and wires were fabricated by the Powder-In-Tube method. Stainless steel and Cu-Ni tubes were used as sheath materials, and no heat treatment was applied. The tapes made of stainless steel showed transport critical current density Jc of about 10,000A/cm2 at 4.2K and 5T. A high Jc of about 300,000A/cm2 was obtained by extrapolating the Jc-B curves to zero field. Multifilamentary(7-core) MgB2 wire was successfully fabricated using Cu-Ni tubes. For both tapes and wires the grain connectivity of MgB2 was as good as a high-pressure sintered bulk sample. However, the Jc of the Cu-Ni sheath…
Seven-core Ag/Fe sheathed Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Sr-122) superconducting wires were produced by the ex situ powder-in-tube (PIT) method. The relationship between the cold-work deformation process and the superconducting properties of wires were systematically studied. It was found that flat rolling can efficiently increase the density of the superconducting core and largely improve the transport critical current density (Jc) of as-drawn wires. The Jc of the best sample achieved 21.1 kA/cm^2 at 4.2 K in self field, and showed very weak magnetic field dependence in high fields. Our result suggested a …
We fabricated FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconducting wires using ex-situ Powder-in-tube method with an Fe sheath. It was amazing that superconducting current was observed in the as-drawn wire without any heat treatments. By heat treatment at 200C for 2 hours, Tczero and Jc at 4.2 K were enhanced up to 9.1 K and 64.1 A/cm2 (Ic = 182.6 mA), respectively. Furthermore, the Jc of FeTe0.5Se0.5 wire heat treated at 200C for 2 hours was not much sensitive to the applied magnetic fields. Therefore, FeTe0.5Se0.5 wires have a great potential for applications.
We demonstrate that Fe sheathed LaO0.9F0.1FeAs wires with Ti as a buffer layer were successfully fabricated by the powder-in-tube (PIT) method. Comparing to the common two-step vacuum quartz tube synthesis method, the PIT method is more convenient and safe for synthesizing the novel iron-based layered superconductors. Structural analysis by mean of x-ray diffraction shows that the main phase of LaO0.9F0.1FeAs was obtained by this synthesis method. The transition temperature of the LaO0.9F0.1FeAs wire is around 25 K. The micrograph shows a homogeneous microstructure with a grain size of 1-3 mic…
We fabricated single- and 3-core superconducting Fe-Se wires using a novel process based on a chemical transformation from hexagonal FeSe1+d (non-superconducting) to tetragonal FeSe (superconducting) via an optimal supply of Fe from the Fe sheath by annealing. This process enhanced a packing density of superconducting core inside the sheath, owing to an expansion of the lattice volume via a chemical transformation from high-density hexagonal FeSe1+d to low-density tetragonal FeSe. The obtained superconducting wire showed superconductivity below ~10 K and the upper critical field was estimated …
We fabricated (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 superconducting wires using the powder-in-tube method and hot isostatic pressing. By improving powder synthesis processes compared with previous studies, highly pure raw materials for the wire fabrication were obtained. The largest transport critical current density (Jc) reached 40 kAcm-2 at T = 4.2 K under a magnetic field of 100 kOe. This value exceeds not only the value of transport Jc of the previous (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 wire but also those of all iron-based superconducting round wires. Improvements of polycrystalline powder synthesis play a key role for the enhancemen…
FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconducting wires have been fabricated using ex-situ PIT method with an Fe sheath. Among the other FeAs-based superconductor, FeTe0.5Se0.5 has great advantage for application due to binary composition and less toxic. Surprisingly, superconducting current was observed in the as-fabricated wire without any heat treatments. Zero resistivity and transport critical current density (Jc) were 3.2 K and 2.8 A/cm2, respectively. In addition, by annealing at 200 degC for 2 h, critical temperature Tczero and Jc were enhanced up to 9.1 K, and 64.1 A/cm2, respectively. This suggests that t…
We report the successful fabrication of mono- and seven-core superconducting wires of FeSe1-xTex using an in-situ Fe-diffusion process based on the powder-in-tube (Fe-diffusion PIT) method. The reacted layer in these wires were found to have composite structure with composition nearly FeSe and FeTe for the inner and outer layers, although a single layer of composition FeSe0.5Te0.5 was supposed to be formed. The self-field transport Jc values at 4.2 K were found to be 226.2 A/cm2 and 100.3 A/cm2 respectively for mono- and seven-core wires. The Jc's of mono- and seven-core wires dropped rapidly …
Monofilamentary MgB2-wires with a 2- or 3-component sheath containing mechanical reinforcing stainless steel (SS) were prepared and characterized. In direct contact to the superconductor Nb, Ta or Fe was used. For a selection of samples with a Fe and Fe/SS sheath, we investigated the transport critical current behaviour in magnetic fields changing systematically the geometrical shape from a round wire to a flat tape. A strong increase of the current densities in flat tapes was observed and possible reasons for this are discussed. Reinforcing the sheath in the outer layer with different amounts…
We demonstrate the fabrication of superconducting SmFeAsO1-xFx (Sm-1111) wires by using the ex-situ powder-in-tube technique. Sm-1111 powder and a binder composed of SmF3, samarium arsenide, and iron arsenide were used to synthesize the superconducting core. Although the F content of Sm-1111 is reduced in the process of ex-situ fabrication, the binder compensates by sufficiently supplementing the F content, thereby preventing a decrease in the superconducting transition temperature and a shrinkage of the superconducting volume fraction. Thus, in the superconducting Sm-1111 wire with the binder…
We report significant transport critical currents firstly achieved in Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 wires and tapes with a Tc = 34 K, which were fabricated through an in-situ powder-in-tube process. Silver was used as a chemical addition as well as a sheath material. Transport measurements were performed by a standard four-probe resistive method. All the wire and tape samples have shown transport properties. Critical current density Jc was enhanced upon silver addition, and at 4.2 K, a best Jc of ~1200 A/cm^2 (Ic = 9 A) was achieved for 20 % silver added tapes, which is the highest in iron-based wires and t…
We reply to the recent Comment [cond-mat/9702231] by J.-M. Duan. Our point of view is markedly different on every issue raised. Much of the disagreement can be traced to a different preception of experimentally relevant length scales. i) We explain the difference between our formulation, which rests on a microscopic basis, and the phenomenological one of the author. ii) Our renormalization scheme is fundamentally right, as the "log(log)" interaction appears only in wires of astronomical lengths. iii) The tunneling barrier is profoundly reduced by the kinetic inductance. iv) We do make an appro…
Sintered powders and wires of superconducting $MgB_2$ have been fabricated under a variety of conditions in order to determine details of the diffusion of the $Mg$ into $B$ and to study the types of defects that arise during growth. For samples prepared by exposure of boron to $Mg$ vapor at $950^{\circ}C$, the conversion of particles of less than $100μm$ size particles to $MgB_2$ is complete in about $2 h$. The lattice parameters of the $MgB_2$ phase determined from X-ray are independent of the starting stoichiometry and the time of reaction. Wire segments of $MgB_2$ with very little porosity …
Multifilamentary MgB2/Fe wires and tapes with high transport critical current densities have been fabricated using a straightforward powder-in-tube (PIT) process. After annealing, we measured transport jc values up to 1.1 * 105 A/cm2 at 4.2 K and in a field of 2 T in a MgB2/Fe square wire with 7 filaments fabricated by two-axial rolling, and up to 5 * 104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K in 1 T in a MgB2/Fe tape with 7 filaments. For higher currents these multifilamentary wires and tapes quenched due to insufficient thermal stability of filaments. Both the processing routes and deformation methods were found to…
We study effects of disorder on the low energy single particle transport in a normal wire surrounded by a superconductor. We show that the heat conductance includes the Andreev diffusion decreasing with increase in the mean free path $\ell $ and the diffusive drift produced by a small particle-hole asymmetry, which increases with increasing $\ell$. The conductance thus has a minimum as a function of $\ell$ which leads to a peculiar re-entrant localization as a function of the mean free path.
Superconducting triangular Nb wire networks with high normal-state resistance are fabricated by using a negative tone hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ) resist. Robust magnetoresistance oscillations are observed up to high magnetic fields and maintained at low temperatures, due to the eective reduction of wire dimensions. Well-defined dips appear at integral and rational values (1/2, 1/3, 1/4) of the reduced flux f = Phi/Phi_0, which is the first observation in the triangular wire networks. These results are well consistent with theoretical calculations for the reduced critical temperature as a fun…
We study superconducting transport in homogeneous wires in the cases of both equilibrium and nonequilibrium quasiparticle populations, using the quasiclassical Green's function technique. We consider superconductors with arbitrary current densities and impurity concentrations ranging from the clean to the dirty limit. Local current conservation is guaranteed by ensuring that the order parameter satisfies the self-consistency equation at each point. For equilibrium transport, we compute the current, the order parameter amplitude, and the quasiparticle density of states as a function of the supe…
The nano-SiC doped MgB2/Fe wires were fabricated using a powder-in-tube method and an in-situ reaction process. The depression of Tc with increasing SiC doping level remained rather small due to the counterbalanced effect of Si and C co-doping. The high level SiC co-doping allowed creation of the intra-grain defects and nano-inclusions, which act as effective pinning centers, resulting in a substantial enhancement in the Jc(H) performance. The transport Jc for all the wires is comparable to the magnetic Jc at higher fields despite the low density of the samples and percolative nature of curren…
Mono- and multifilamentary MgB2/Fe tapes and wires with high transport critical current densities have been prepared using the powder-in-tube (PIT) process. The fabrication details are described. The effect of powder grain sizes and recrystallization temperature on jc has been investigated. At 25K and 1 T, jc values close to 105 A/cm2 were measured, while jc of 106 A/cm2 were extrapolated for 4.2K/0T in our monofilamentary tape. MgB2/Fe tapes exhibit high exponential n factors for the resistive transition: n ~ 80 and 40 were found at 5 T and 7 T, respectively. The highest transport jc values o…
We generalize the representation of the real time Green's functions introduced by Langreth and Nordlander [Phys. Rev. B 43 2541 (1991)] and Meir and Wingreen [Phys. Rev. Lett. 68 2512 (1992)] in stationary quantum transport in order to study problems with hybrid structures containing normal (N) and superconducting (S) pieces. We illustrate the treatment in a S-N junction under a stationary bias and investigate in detail the behavior of the equilibrium currents in a normal ring threaded by a magnetic flux with attached superconducting wires at equilibrium. We analyze the flux sensitivity of the…
We theoretically study thermally-activated phase slips in superfluid spin transport in easy-plane magnetic wires within the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert phenomenology, which runs parallel to the Langer-Ambegaokar-McCumber-Halperin theory for thermal resistances in superconducting wires. To that end, we start by obtaining the exact solutions for free-energy minima and saddle points. We provide an analytical expression for the phase-slip rate in the zero spin-current limit, which involves detailed analysis of spin fluctuations at extrema of the free energy. An experimental setup of a magne…
We study theoretically the electron transport in a 1D conductor adiabatically connected to a superconducting and normal metal leads. In the case of non-interacting we show that ac voltage applied along with dc voltage modifies I-V curve resembling a regime of photon-assisted tunneling. We obtain in the limit of low voltages, that the electron-electron interaction affects electronic transport resulting in a decrease of conductance and features in the frequency dependence of the impedance.
In this letter, we report the first successful fabrication of dense, metal-clad MgB2 superconductor wires as well as the first demonstration of high transport Jc of greater than 36,000 A/cm2 in MgB2. The fabrication technique that we devised uses only ambient pressure, yet produces very dense MgB2 with little loss of stoichiometry. Such a technique can be useful for rapid and reliable compound syntheses and characterizations for future discovery of new or improved superconductors with higher Tc, higher Hc2 or improved flux pinning characteristics. We also show that while inherently weak-link-f…
We study coherent electronic transport through a Coulomb blockaded superconducting Rashba wire in the co-tunneling regime between conductance resonances. By varying an external Zeeman field the wire can be tuned into a topological regime, where non-local transport through Majorana zero modes is the dominant mechanism. We model coherent transport in the co-tunneling regime by using a scattering matrix formalism, and find that the transmission amplitude has a maximum as a function of Zeeman field, whose height is proportional to the wire length. We relate the transmission amplitude to the Majora…
