We demonstrate that Fe sheathed LaO0.9F0.1FeAs wires with Ti as a buffer layer were successfully fabricated by the powder-in-tube (PIT) method. Comparing to the common two-step vacuum quartz tube synthesis method, the PIT method is more convenient and safe for synthesizing the novel iron-based layered superconductors. Structural analysis by mean of x-ray diffraction shows that the main phase of LaO0.9F0.1FeAs was obtained by this synthesis method. The transition temperature of the LaO0.9F0.1FeAs wire is around 25 K. The micrograph shows a homogeneous microstructure with a grain size of 1-3 micrometers. The results suggest that the PIT process is promising in preparing high-quality iron-based layered superconductor wires.
We report large transport critical current densities observed in Ag-added (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wires prepared by an ex-situ powder-in-tube (PIT) process. The wire has a simple composite structure sheathed only by Ag. A precursor bulk material prepared by a melting process was ground into powder and put into a Ag tube. The composite was then cold worked into a wire and heat treated at 850$^\circ$C for sintering. Transport critical current densities, Jc, at 4.2 K are 1.0\times104 A/cm2 (Ic = 60.7 A) in self field and 1.1\times103 A/cm2 (Ic = 6.6 A) in 10 T. These are the highest values r…
We fabricated FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconducting wires using ex-situ Powder-in-tube method with an Fe sheath. It was amazing that superconducting current was observed in the as-drawn wire without any heat treatments. By heat treatment at 200C for 2 hours, Tczero and Jc at 4.2 K were enhanced up to 9.1 K and 64.1 A/cm2 (Ic = 182.6 mA), respectively. Furthermore, the Jc of FeTe0.5Se0.5 wire heat treated at 200C for 2 hours was not much sensitive to the applied magnetic fields. Therefore, FeTe0.5Se0.5 wires have a great potential for applications.
Nb-sheathed Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 superconducting wires have been fabricated using the powder-in-tube (PIT) method for the first time and the superconducting properties of the wires have been investigated. The transition temperature (Tc) of the Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 wires is confirmed to be as high as 35.3 K. Most importantly, Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 wires exhibit a very weak Jc-field dependence behavior even the temperature is very close to Tc. The upper critical field Hc2(0) value can exceed 140 T, surpassing those of MgB2 and all the low temperature superconductors. Such high Hc2 and superior Jc-field performa…
MgB2 tapes and wires were fabricated by the Powder-In-Tube method. Stainless steel and Cu-Ni tubes were used as sheath materials, and no heat treatment was applied. The tapes made of stainless steel showed transport critical current density Jc of about 10,000A/cm2 at 4.2K and 5T. A high Jc of about 300,000A/cm2 was obtained by extrapolating the Jc-B curves to zero field. Multifilamentary(7-core) MgB2 wire was successfully fabricated using Cu-Ni tubes. For both tapes and wires the grain connectivity of MgB2 was as good as a high-pressure sintered bulk sample. However, the Jc of the Cu-Ni sheath…
We report the successful fabrication of mono- and seven-core superconducting wires of FeSe1-xTex using an in-situ Fe-diffusion process based on the powder-in-tube (Fe-diffusion PIT) method. The reacted layer in these wires were found to have composite structure with composition nearly FeSe and FeTe for the inner and outer layers, although a single layer of composition FeSe0.5Te0.5 was supposed to be formed. The self-field transport Jc values at 4.2 K were found to be 226.2 A/cm2 and 100.3 A/cm2 respectively for mono- and seven-core wires. The Jc's of mono- and seven-core wires dropped rapidly …
MgB2 wires and tapes suffer from a limitation of the transport current densities, especially at low field, due to an unsufficient thermal stabilization caused by hot spots from a non-homogeneous microstructure, the presence of secondary phases and voids. For the preparation of MgB2 wires and tapes two different precursor routes, using MgB2 (ex-situ process) or Mg + B (in-situ process) are applied. The in-situ approach allows variation of many parameters in the wire preparation and the improvement of this approach is the central topic of this paper. We present an improved in-situ approach, the …
The development of the PIT fabrication process of iron pnictide superconducting wires and tapes has been carried out in order to enhance their transport properties. Silver was found to be the best sheath material, since no reaction layer was observed between the silver sheath and the superconducting core. The grain connectivity of iron pnictide wires and tapes has been markedly improved by employing Ag or Pb as dopants. At present, critical current densities in excess of 3750 A/cm^2 (Ic = 37.5 A) at 4.2 K have been achieved on Ag-sheathed SrKFeAs wires prepared with the above techniques, which…
We demonstrate that Ta sheathed SmO1-xFxFeAs wires were successfully fabricated by the powder-in-tube (PIT) method for the first time. Structural analysis by mean of x-ray diffraction shows that the main phase of SmO1-xFxFeAs was obtained by this synthesis method. The transition temperature of the SmO0.65F0.35FeAs wires was confirmed to be as high as 52 K. Based on magnetization measurements, it is found that a globe current can flow on macroscopic sample dimensions with Jc of ~3.9x10^3 A/cm^2 at 5 K and self field, while a high Jc about 2x10^5 A/cm^2 is observed within the grains, suggesting …
The recent discovery of superconductivity in the iron based superconductors with very high upper critical fields presents a new possibility for practical applications, but fabricating fine-wire is a challenge because of mechanically hard and brittle powders and the toxicity and volatility of arsenic. In this paper, we report the synthesis and the physical characterization of iron pnictide wires and bulks prepared by the powder-in-tube method (PIT). A new class of high-Tc iron pnictide composite wires, such as LaFeAsO1-xFx, SmFeAsO1-xFx and Sr1-xKxFeAs, has been fabricated by the in situ PIT te…
We report significant transport critical currents firstly achieved in Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 wires and tapes with a Tc = 34 K, which were fabricated through an in-situ powder-in-tube process. Silver was used as a chemical addition as well as a sheath material. Transport measurements were performed by a standard four-probe resistive method. All the wire and tape samples have shown transport properties. Critical current density Jc was enhanced upon silver addition, and at 4.2 K, a best Jc of ~1200 A/cm^2 (Ic = 9 A) was achieved for 20 % silver added tapes, which is the highest in iron-based wires and t…
In this work, the feasibility condition of Powder-In-Tube (PIT) processed wires of Fe(Se,Te) superconductor has been investigated. We faced several technical issues that are extensively described and discussed. In particular, we tested different metals and alloys as external sheaths (Cu, Ag, Nb, Ta, Ni, Fe, cupronickel, brass) concluding that the only sheath that does not affect substantially the Fe(Se,Te) phase is Fe. On the other hand, Fe sheath introduces excess iron in the Fe(Se,Te) phase, which affects the superconducting properties; we investigated the effects of the thermal treatments a…
We fabricated (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 superconducting wires using the powder-in-tube method and hot isostatic pressing. By improving powder synthesis processes compared with previous studies, highly pure raw materials for the wire fabrication were obtained. The largest transport critical current density (Jc) reached 40 kAcm-2 at T = 4.2 K under a magnetic field of 100 kOe. This value exceeds not only the value of transport Jc of the previous (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 wire but also those of all iron-based superconducting round wires. Improvements of polycrystalline powder synthesis play a key role for the enhancemen…
The powder-in-tube MgB2 wires were prepared by high energy milling of Mg and B powder. The powder was not mechanically alloyed for 2h short milling time. However, the MgB2 grains in wires are very small (20 100nm) and resembled to the dimple after post-heat treatment. The clear evidence for transcrystlline fracture is observed. It indicated that the grain connection was greatly improved and the fluxing pinning was significantly enhanced. Another point to view is no intermediate annealing was adopted during the whole rolling process. The influence of the post-heat treatment on the transport cur…
The new class of Mg-B superconducting conductors was prepared using the standard in-situ powder-in-tube, PIT, method where Mg+2B mixture was used to fill the copper and silver tubes. Study of the intergranular current, grain connectivity and superconducting phases in wires were conducted by AC susceptibility measurements and direct four point transport measurements. Using SQUID magnetometer, magnetisation versus magnetic field (M-H) curves of the round wires after reactive diffusion were measured at temperatures 5K and magnetic field up to 5T to define the Jcmag . The direct current density me…
Superconducting Ag or Cu sheathed MgB2 wires have been fabricated by conventional powder-in-tube techniques. The in-situ reaction of Mg and B powders with atomic proportions of 1:2 and 1.33:2 inside Ag or Cu tubes at low temperatures have been searched. An active alloying of Mg with Ag or Cu sheaths at temperatures below 660 C has been observed. For Ag sheaths, there is a strong diffusion of Mg, which does not allow the formation of large amounts of MgB2 at the core. For Cu sheaths, the diffusion of Mg is stopped by the formation of a MgCu2 layer around the superconducting core and an appropri…
Mono- and multifilamentary MgB2/Fe tapes and wires with high transport critical current densities have been prepared using the powder-in-tube (PIT) process. The fabrication details are described. The effect of powder grain sizes and recrystallization temperature on jc has been investigated. At 25K and 1 T, jc values close to 105 A/cm2 were measured, while jc of 106 A/cm2 were extrapolated for 4.2K/0T in our monofilamentary tape. MgB2/Fe tapes exhibit high exponential n factors for the resistive transition: n ~ 80 and 40 were found at 5 T and 7 T, respectively. The highest transport jc values o…
Sintered powders and wires of superconducting $MgB_2$ have been fabricated under a variety of conditions in order to determine details of the diffusion of the $Mg$ into $B$ and to study the types of defects that arise during growth. For samples prepared by exposure of boron to $Mg$ vapor at $950^{\circ}C$, the conversion of particles of less than $100μm$ size particles to $MgB_2$ is complete in about $2 h$. The lattice parameters of the $MgB_2$ phase determined from X-ray are independent of the starting stoichiometry and the time of reaction. Wire segments of $MgB_2$ with very little porosity …
The critical current density (Jc) of hot isostatic pressed (HIPed) MgB2 wires, measured by d.c. transport and magnetization, is compared with that of similar wires annealed at ambient pressure. The HIPed wires have a higher Jc than the annealed wires, especially at high temperatures and magnetic fields, and higher irreversibility field (Hirr). The HIPed wires are promising for applications, with Jc>106 A/cm2 at 5 K and zero field and >104 A/cm2 at 1.5 T and 26.5 K, and Hirr ~ 17 T at 4 K. The improvement is attributed to a high density of structural defects, which are the likely source of vort…
We demonstrate the fabrication of superconducting SmFeAsO1-xFx (Sm-1111) wires by using the ex-situ powder-in-tube technique. Sm-1111 powder and a binder composed of SmF3, samarium arsenide, and iron arsenide were used to synthesize the superconducting core. Although the F content of Sm-1111 is reduced in the process of ex-situ fabrication, the binder compensates by sufficiently supplementing the F content, thereby preventing a decrease in the superconducting transition temperature and a shrinking of the superconducting volume fraction. Thus, in the superconducting Sm-1111 wire with the binder…

MgB2 monofilamentary nickel-sheated tapes and wires were fabricated by means of the ex-situ powder-in-tube method using either high-energy ball milled and low temperature synthesized powders. All sample were sintered at 920 C in Ar flow. The milling time and the revolution speed were tuned in order to maximize the critical current density in field (Jc): the maximum Jc value of 6 x 10e4 A/cm2 at 5 K and 4 T was obtained corresponding to the tape prepared with powders milled for 144h at 180rpm. Vorious synthesis temperature were also investigated (730-900 C) finding a best Jc value for the wire …
We prepared and characterized monofilamentary MgB2 wires with a mechanically reinforced composite sheath of Ta(Nb)/Cu/steel, which leads to dense filaments and correspondingly high transport currents up to Jc = 10^5 A/cm^2 at 4.2 K, self field. The reproducibility of the measured transport currents was excellent and not depending on the wire diameter. Using different precursors, commercial reacted powder or an unreacted Mg/B powder mixture, a strong influence on the pinning behaviour and the irreversibility field was observed. The critical transport current density showed a nearly linear tempe…
It is well known that the A15 layer in the subelements of a Powder-In-Tube (PIT) Nb3Sn wire exhibits two different grain morphologies: a region with fine grains (~200 nm in size) representing about 60% of the total A15 area and one with large grains (1-2 μm in size). By means of high field specific heat and magnetization measurements we have shown that these two A15 phases correspond to two distinctly different Tc distributions, the large grains region exhibiting a higher Tc and a lower Bc2, the fine grains region a lower Tc and a higher Bc2. We report here the values of the superconducting pa…
Recently the interest about Bi-2212 round wire superconductor for high magnetic field use has been enhancing despite the fact that an increase of the critical current is still needed to boost its successful use in such applications. Recent studies have demonstrated that the main obstacle to current flow, especially in long wires, is the residual porosity inside these Powder-In-Tube processed conductors which develops in bubbles-agglomeration when the Bi-2212 melts. Through this work we tried to overcome this issue acting on the wire densification by changing the deformation process. Here we sh…
Bi-2212 round wire is made by the powder-in-tube technique. An unavoidable property of powder-in-tube conductors is that there is about 30% void space in the as-drawn wire. We have recently shown that the gas present in the as-drawn Bi-2212 wire agglomerates into large bubbles and that they are presently the most deleterious current limiting mechanism. By densifying short 2212 wires before reaction through cold isostatic pressing (CIPping), the void space was almost removed and the gas bubble density was reduced significantly, resulting in a doubled engineering critical current density (JE) of…
We have fabricated a series of iron-sheathed superconducting wires prepared by the powder-in-tube technique from (MgB_2)_{1-x}:(Mg+2B)_x initial powder mixtures taken with different proportions, so that x varies from 0 to 1. It turned out that "ex-situ" prepared wire (x = 0) has considerable disadvantages compared to all the other wires in which "in-situ" assisted (0 < x < 1) or pure "in-situ" (x = 1) preparation was used due to weaker inter-grain connectivity. As a result, higher critical current densities J_c were measured over the entire range of applied magnetic fields B_a for all the samp…
We have synthesized bulk Mg(B$_{1-x}$C$_x$)$_2$ from a mixture of elemental Mg, B, and the binary compound B$_4$C. Carbon incorporation was dramatically improved by a two step reaction process at an elevated temperature of 1200 $^o$C. This reaction process results in a solubility limit near x$\sim$0.07. We found that impurities in the starting B cause an additive suppression of T$_c$. We combine these data with T$_c$ and H$_{c2}$(T=0) data from CVD wires as well as plasma spray synthesized powders and present a unifying H$_{c2}$ and T$_c$ versus x plot.
The high upper critical field and low anisotropy of iron-based superconductors make them being particularly attractive for high-field applications. However, the current carrying capability needs to be enhanced by overcoming the weak-link effect between misaligned grains inside wire and tape conductors. Here we demonstrate a high transport critical current density (Jc) reaching 1.5x10^5 A/cm^2 (Ic = 437 A) at 4.2 K and 10 T in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Ba-122) tapes prepared by a combination of conventional powder-in-tube method and optimized hot-press technique. The transport Jc measured at 4.2 K under…
An improvement of the transport critical current density, Jc, of MgB2 wires was obtained after addition of 10 wt.% B4C powders, after reaction at 800 C: Jc values of 1.10^4 A/cm2 at 4.2 K and 9T were obtained for wires of 1.11 mm diameter in a Fe matrix. The starting mixture of Mg and B was doped with sub-micrometric B4C, the ratio being Mg : B : B4C = 1: 2 : 0.08, corresponding to 10 wt.% B4C. For T > 800 C, a decrease of Jc was found, due to the reaction with the Fe sheath. In order to investigate the origin of the improvement of the transport properties for heat treatments up to 800 C, X-ra…
We succeeded in the fabrication of high-Jc MgB2/Fe wires applying the internal Mg diffusion (IMD) process with pure Mg core and SiC addition. A pure Mg rod with 2 mm diameter was placed at the center of a Fe tube, and the space between Mg and Fe tube was filled with B powder or the powder mixture of B-(5mol%)SiC. The composite was cold worked into 1.2mm diameter wire and finally heat treated at temperatures above the melting point of Mg(~650oC). During the heat treatment liquid Mg infiltrated into B layer and reacted with B to form MgB2. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the major phas…
We have fabricated a series of ex situ copper sheathed powder-in-tube MgB2 wires with 20% by volume Ag, Pb, In, and Ga metal added to the MgB2 powder. We find the transport critical current of these wires increases significantly with the addition of specific metals to the core filament. In particular, the critical current density (Jc) of the MgB2/Ga(20%) wire is in excess of 5x10^4 A/cm^2 at 10K in self field, nearly 50 times that of the MgB2/Ag(20%) wire. The temperature dependent Jc of all wires is well described as an ensemble of clean S/N/S junctions in which the relevant parameters are th…
Recent advances in MgB2 conductors are leading to a new level of performance. Based on the use of proper powders, proper chemistry, and an architecture which incorporates internal Mg diffusion (IMD), a dense MgB2 structure with not only a high critical current density Jc, but also a high engineering critical current density, Je, can be obtained. In this paper, a series of these advanced (or second - generation, "2G") conductors has been prepared. Scanning electron microscopy and associated energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were applied to characterize the microstructures and compositions of…
Among the recently discovered Fe-based superconducting compounds, the (K,Ba)Fe2As2 phase is attracting large interest within the scientific community interested in conductor developments. In fact, after some years of development, critical current densities Jc of about 105 A/cm2 at fields up to more than 10 T have been obtained in powder in tube (PIT) processed wires and tapes. Here we explore the crucial points in the wire/tape fabrication by means of the ex-situ PIT method. We focus on scaling up processes which are crucial for the industrial fabrication. We analyzed the effects on the micros…
We have fabricated the Fe(Se, Te) superconducting wire by a special process based on a powder-in-tube method. The pure Fe tube plays the role of not only the sheath but also the raw material for synthesizing the superconducting phases. We succeeded in observing zero resistivity current on the current-voltage measurements for the Fe(Se, Te) wire. Introduction of the pinning centers and fabricating a multi-core wire will enhance the critical current density for the next step.
We report successful fabrication of multi- and mono-core FeSe wires with high transport critical current density Jc using a simple in-situ Fe-diffusion process based on the powder-in-tube (Fe-diffusion PIT) method. The seven-core wire showed transport Jc of as high as 1027 A/cm2 at 4.2 K. The superconducting transition temperature Tczero was observed at 10.5 K in the wire-samples, which is about 2 K higher than that of bulk FeSe. The Fe-diffusion PIT method is suitable for fabricating multi-core wires of the binary FeSe superconductors with superior properties.
SmFeAsO1-xFx (Sm1111) tapes were prepared by an ex-situ powder-in-tube method with a Sn-presintering process. Scanning electron microscopy revealed apparent difference in microstructure between Sn-presintered tapes and the previously reported polycrystalline Sm1111 bulk, since Sn has reduced FeAs wetting phase and filled the voids between Sm1111 grains. The Sn-presintered tapes showed significant enhanced field dependences of transport Jc compared with Sn-added tapes. A highest transport critical current density (Jc) of 3.45x10^4 A cm-2 at 4.2 K and self-field is achieved. Magneto-optical (MO)…
The magnetic and transport properties of magnesium diboride films represent performance goals yet to be attained by powder-processed bulk samples and conductors. Such performance limits are still out of the reach of even the best magnesium diboride magnet wire. In discussing the present status and prospects for improving the performance of powder-based wire we focus attention on (1) the intrinsic (intragrain) superconducting properties of magnesium diboride, Hc2 and flux pinning, (2) factors that control the efficiency with which current is transported from grain-to-grain in the conductor, an …
We have fabricated (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wires through ex-situ powder-in-tube method. Silver was used as a chemical addition to improve the performance of these superconducting wires. The transport critical current densities (Jc) have reached 1.3\times104 A/cm and 1.0\times104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K under self field in the wires with and without Ag addition. We used magneto-optical (MO) imaging technique to investigate the properties of grain boundaries in the (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wire with Ag addition. MO images show the weak links in the Fe-based superconducting wires for the first ti…
We demonstrate a large enhancement of critical current density (Jc) up to 1.0x10^7 A/cm2 at 5 K under self-field in (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystals by irradiating 320 MeV Au ions. With the very promising potential of this material in mind, we have fabricated a (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wire through a powder-in-tube method combined with the hot isostatic pressing technique, whose effectiveness has been proven in industrial Bi2223 tapes. The Jc in the wire at 4.2 K has reached 37 kA/cm2 under self-field and 3.0 kA/cm2 at 90 kOe. Magneto-optical imaging of the wire confirmed the large intergranul…
$MgB_2$ becomes superconducting just below 40 K. Whereas porous polycrystalline samples of $MgB_2$ can be synthesized from boron powders, in this letter we demonstrate that dense wires of $MgB_2$ can be prepared by exposing boron filaments to $Mg$ vapor. The resulting wires have a diameter of 160 $μm$, are better than 80% dense and manifest the full $χ= -1/4π$ shielding in the superconducting state. Temperature-dependent resistivity measurements indicate that $MgB_2$ is a highly conducting metal in the normal state with $ρ(40 K)$ = 0.38 $μOhm$-$cm$. Using this value, an electronic mean free pa…
Iron-based superconductors, with Tc values up to 55 K, are of great interest for applications, due to their lower anisotropies and ultrahigh upper critical fields. In the past 4 years, great progress has been made in the fabrication of iron-based superconducting wires and tapes using the powder-in-tube (PIT) processing method, including main three types of 122, 11, and 1111 iron-based parent compounds. In this article, an overview of the current state of development of iron-based superconducting wires and tapes is presented. We focus on the fabrication techniques used for 122 pnictide wires an…
We report on the optimization of synthesis of iron-selenide (non-arsenic) superconducting powders that are based on '122' composition, with optimal Tc = 38 K and Jc = 10^5 A/cm2 (4 K). We also report on the wire proof-of concept for these materials, by producing ~ 40 ft of wire that produce Ic. The 122 selenides are more difficult to synthesize and have more complex crystal structures compared to '11' selenides (FeSe and FeSe1-xTex), but they do offer higher Tc and might provoke a natural extension for 11 work.
We present the fabrication and test results of Hot-Isostatic-Pressed (HIPed) Powder-in-Tube (PIT) MgB$_2$ coils. The coils properties were measured by transport and magnetization at different applied fields ($H$) and temperatures ($T$). The engineering critical current ($J_e$) value is the largest reported in PIT MgB$_2$ wires or tapes. At 25 K our champion 6-layer coil was able to generate a field of 1 T at self-field ($I_c >$ 220 A, $J_e \sim 2.8 \times 10^4$ A/cm$^2$). At 4 K this coil generated 1.6 T under an applied field of 1.25 T ($I_c \sim350$ A, $J_e \sim 4.5 \times 10^4$ A/cm$^2$). T…
The crystal structure of LnFeAsO$_{1-y}$ (Ln = La, Nd) has been studied by the powder neutron diffraction technique. The superconducting phase diagram of NdFeAsO$_{1-y}$ is established as a function of oxygen content which is determined by Rietveld refinement. The small As-Fe bond length suggests that As and Fe atoms are connected covalently. FeAs$_4$-tetrahedrons transform toward a regular shape with increasing oxygen deficiency. Superconducting transition temperatures seem to attain maximum values for regular FeAs$_4$-tetrahedrons.
Conventional powder-in-tube (PIT) method has been the most effective technique for fabricating iron-based superconducting wires and tapes. Tremendous advances have been made during the last few years, especially for 122 family pnictide tapes. Here we review some of the most recent and significant developments in making high-performance iron-based tapes by the ex-situ PIT process, paying particular attention to several fabrication techniques to realize high-field Jc performance in terms of increase of core density and improvement of texture. At 4.2 K, the practical level transport Jc up to 0.12…
Anisotropic Fe K-edge and As K-edge X-ray absorption near edge spectrum (XANES) measurements on superconducting (T_c = 52 K) (Sm_{0.95}La_{0.05})FeAs(O_{0.85}F_{0.15}) field-aligned microcrystalline powder are presented. The angular dependence of Fe pre-edge peak (dipole transition of Fe-1s electrons to Fe-3d/As-4p hybrid bands) relative to the tetragonal ab-plane of aligned powder indicates larger density of state (DOS) along the c-axis, and is consistent with the LDA band structure calculation. The anisotropic Fe K-edge spectra exhibit a chemical shift to lower energy compared to FeO which a…
In this paper we report a new synthesis route to produce boron powders characterized as being amorphous and having very fine particle size. This route has been developed to improve the performances of superconducting MgB2 powders, which can be directly synthesized from this nano-structured boron precursor by following the ex-situ or the in-situ P.I.T. method during the manufacturing of tapes, wires and cables. All the procedure steps are explained and the chemical-physical characterization of the boron powder, using x-ray diffraction (Xrd), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission e…
Improving transport current has been the primary issue for practical application of superconducting wires and tapes. However, the porous nature of powder-in-tube (PIT) processed iron-based superconducting tapes is thought to be one of the important reasons for the low Jc values. In this work, the superconducting core density of ex-situ Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 tapes was significantly improved by employing a simple hot pressing as an alternative route for final sintering. At 4.2 K, the transport Jc values showed excellent values of 5.1x10^4 A/cm^2 at 10 T and 4.3x10^4 A/cm^2 at 14 T, respectively, which…
FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconducting wires have been fabricated using ex-situ PIT method with an Fe sheath. Among the other FeAs-based superconductor, FeTe0.5Se0.5 has great advantage for application due to binary composition and less toxic. Surprisingly, superconducting current was observed in the as-fabricated wire without any heat treatments. Zero resistivity and transport critical current density (Jc) were 3.2 K and 2.8 A/cm2, respectively. In addition, by annealing at 200 degC for 2 h, critical temperature Tczero and Jc were enhanced up to 9.1 K, and 64.1 A/cm2, respectively. This suggests that t…
