We demonstrate that Ta sheathed SmO1-xFxFeAs wires were successfully fabricated by the powder-in-tube (PIT) method for the first time. Structural analysis by mean of x-ray diffraction shows that the main phase of SmO1-xFxFeAs was obtained by this synthesis method. The transition temperature of the SmO0.65F0.35FeAs wires was confirmed to be as high as 52 K. Based on magnetization measurements, it is found that a globe current can flow on macroscopic sample dimensions with Jc of ~3.9x10^3 A/cm^2 at 5 K and self field, while a high Jc about 2x10^5 A/cm^2 is observed within the grains, suggesting that a significant improvement in the globle Jc is possible. It should be noted that the Jc exhibits a very weak field dependence behavior. Furthermore, the upper critical fields (Hc2) determined according to the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg formula are (T= 0 K) = 120 T, indicating a very encouraging application of the new superconductors.
A series of polycrystalline SmO1-xFxFeAs bulks (x=0.15, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) were prepared by the conventional solid state reaction. Resistivity, susceptibility, magnetic hysteresis, critical current density and microstructure of these samples have been investigated. It is found that critical transition temperature Tc increases steadily with increasing fluorine content, with the highest onset Tc=53 K at x=0.4. On the other hand, the superconductivity seems correlated with lattice constants; that is, Tc rises with the shrinkage of a-axis while resistivity increases with the enlargement of c-axis. …
The MgB2 bulks were prepared by high energy milling of Mg and B powder. The correlations among milling times, microstructure and superconducting properties were investigated in MgB2 bulks. Samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDX) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the magnetization properties were examined by a Superconducting quantum interfere device (SQUID) magnetometer. It showed that the high energy milling is an effective approach to get fine crystalline (40-100nm) bulk MgB2 with good grain connectivity and high Jc performance. T…
We report large transport critical current densities observed in Ag-added (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wires prepared by an ex-situ powder-in-tube (PIT) process. The wire has a simple composite structure sheathed only by Ag. A precursor bulk material prepared by a melting process was ground into powder and put into a Ag tube. The composite was then cold worked into a wire and heat treated at 850$^\circ$C for sintering. Transport critical current densities, Jc, at 4.2 K are 1.0\times104 A/cm2 (Ic = 60.7 A) in self field and 1.1\times103 A/cm2 (Ic = 6.6 A) in 10 T. These are the highest values r…
The development of the PIT fabrication process of iron pnictide superconducting wires and tapes has been carried out in order to enhance their transport properties. Silver was found to be the best sheath material, since no reaction layer was observed between the silver sheath and the superconducting core. The grain connectivity of iron pnictide wires and tapes has been markedly improved by employing Ag or Pb as dopants. At present, critical current densities in excess of 3750 A/cm^2 (Ic = 37.5 A) at 4.2 K have been achieved on Ag-sheathed SrKFeAs wires prepared with the above techniques, which…
We have successfully prepared the MgB2 superconducting bulk and powdered materials by the method of combustion synthesis. The starting materials used in this study were powders of Mg and B. X-ray powder diffraction pattern was well assigned to the P6/mmm MgB2 phase. The temperature dependence of magnetization shows sharp superconducting transition around 38K. The critical current density can be estimated from the hysteresis of the magnetization curvature using the Bean's model. The powdered sample shows a high critical current density of 2x10^6 A/cm2 at 5K under the magnetic field of 1T.
SmFeAsO1-xFx (Sm1111) tapes were prepared by an ex-situ powder-in-tube method with a Sn-presintering process. Scanning electron microscopy revealed apparent difference in microstructure between Sn-presintered tapes and the previously reported polycrystalline Sm1111 bulk, since Sn has reduced FeAs wetting phase and filled the voids between Sm1111 grains. The Sn-presintered tapes showed significant enhanced field dependences of transport Jc compared with Sn-added tapes. A highest transport critical current density (Jc) of 3.45x10^4 A cm-2 at 4.2 K and self-field is achieved. Magneto-optical (MO)…
MgB2 monofilamentary nickel-sheated tapes and wires were fabricated by means of the ex-situ powder-in-tube method using either high-energy ball milled and low temperature synthesized powders. All sample were sintered at 920 C in Ar flow. The milling time and the revolution speed were tuned in order to maximize the critical current density in field (Jc): the maximum Jc value of 6 x 10e4 A/cm2 at 5 K and 4 T was obtained corresponding to the tape prepared with powders milled for 144h at 180rpm. Vorious synthesis temperature were also investigated (730-900 C) finding a best Jc value for the wire …
We have fabricated a series of iron-sheathed superconducting wires prepared by the powder-in-tube technique from (MgB_2)_{1-x}:(Mg+2B)_x initial powder mixtures taken with different proportions, so that x varies from 0 to 1. It turned out that "ex-situ" prepared wire (x = 0) has considerable disadvantages compared to all the other wires in which "in-situ" assisted (0 < x < 1) or pure "in-situ" (x = 1) preparation was used due to weaker inter-grain connectivity. As a result, higher critical current densities J_c were measured over the entire range of applied magnetic fields B_a for all the samp…
The high upper critical field and low anisotropy of iron-based superconductors make them being particularly attractive for high-field applications. However, the current carrying capability needs to be enhanced by overcoming the weak-link effect between misaligned grains inside wire and tape conductors. Here we demonstrate a high transport critical current density (Jc) reaching 1.5x10^5 A/cm^2 (Ic = 437 A) at 4.2 K and 10 T in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Ba-122) tapes prepared by a combination of conventional powder-in-tube method and optimized hot-press technique. The transport Jc measured at 4.2 K under…
The powder-in-tube MgB2 wires were prepared by high energy milling of Mg and B powder. The powder was not mechanically alloyed for 2h short milling time. However, the MgB2 grains in wires are very small (20 100nm) and resembled to the dimple after post-heat treatment. The clear evidence for transcrystlline fracture is observed. It indicated that the grain connection was greatly improved and the fluxing pinning was significantly enhanced. Another point to view is no intermediate annealing was adopted during the whole rolling process. The influence of the post-heat treatment on the transport cur…
The new class of Mg-B superconducting conductors was prepared using the standard in-situ powder-in-tube, PIT, method where Mg+2B mixture was used to fill the copper and silver tubes. Study of the intergranular current, grain connectivity and superconducting phases in wires were conducted by AC susceptibility measurements and direct four point transport measurements. Using SQUID magnetometer, magnetisation versus magnetic field (M-H) curves of the round wires after reactive diffusion were measured at temperatures 5K and magnetic field up to 5T to define the Jcmag . The direct current density me…
We report on the results of a comparative investigation of highly dense bulk MgB$_2$ samples prepared by three methods: (i) hot deformation; (ii) high pressure sintering; and (iii) mechanical alloying of Mg and B powders with subsequent hot compaction. All types of samples were studied by ac-susceptibility, dc-magnetization and resistivity measurements in magnetic fields up to $μ_0H=160$ kOe. A small but distinct anisotropy of the upper critical field $H_{c2}^{a,b}/H_{c2}^{c}\sim1.2$ connected with some texture of MgB$_2$ grains was found for the hot deformed samples. The samples prepared by h…
The recent discovery of superconductivity in the iron based superconductors with very high upper critical fields presents a new possibility for practical applications, but fabricating fine-wire is a challenge because of mechanically hard and brittle powders and the toxicity and volatility of arsenic. In this paper, we report the synthesis and the physical characterization of iron pnictide wires and bulks prepared by the powder-in-tube method (PIT). A new class of high-Tc iron pnictide composite wires, such as LaFeAsO1-xFx, SmFeAsO1-xFx and Sr1-xKxFeAs, has been fabricated by the in situ PIT te…
The critical current densities of polycrystalline bulk SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ prepared by the powder-in-tube (PIT) method and by a conventional solid-state reaction were investigated using the remnant magnetic moment method and Campbell's method. Two types of shielding current, corresponding to global and local critical current densities $J_{\rm c}$ were observed using both measurement methods. The global and local $J_{\rm c}$ were on the order of $10^7$ A/m$^2$ and $10^{10}$ A/m$^2$ at 5 K, respectively. The local $J_{\rm c}$ decreased slightly with increasing magnetic field. The global $J_{\rm…
Mono- and multifilamentary MgB2/Fe tapes and wires with high transport critical current densities have been prepared using the powder-in-tube (PIT) process. The fabrication details are described. The effect of powder grain sizes and recrystallization temperature on jc has been investigated. At 25K and 1 T, jc values close to 105 A/cm2 were measured, while jc of 106 A/cm2 were extrapolated for 4.2K/0T in our monofilamentary tape. MgB2/Fe tapes exhibit high exponential n factors for the resistive transition: n ~ 80 and 40 were found at 5 T and 7 T, respectively. The highest transport jc values o…
Sintered powders and wires of superconducting $MgB_2$ have been fabricated under a variety of conditions in order to determine details of the diffusion of the $Mg$ into $B$ and to study the types of defects that arise during growth. For samples prepared by exposure of boron to $Mg$ vapor at $950^{\circ}C$, the conversion of particles of less than $100μm$ size particles to $MgB_2$ is complete in about $2 h$. The lattice parameters of the $MgB_2$ phase determined from X-ray are independent of the starting stoichiometry and the time of reaction. Wire segments of $MgB_2$ with very little porosity …
We prepared and characterized monofilamentary MgB2 wires with a mechanically reinforced composite sheath of Ta(Nb)/Cu/steel, which leads to dense filaments and correspondingly high transport currents up to Jc = 10^5 A/cm^2 at 4.2 K, self field. The reproducibility of the measured transport currents was excellent and not depending on the wire diameter. Using different precursors, commercial reacted powder or an unreacted Mg/B powder mixture, a strong influence on the pinning behaviour and the irreversibility field was observed. The critical transport current density showed a nearly linear tempe…
We have prepared powder samples of NaxCoO2 x yH2O using a new synthesis route. Superconductivity was observed in Na0.3CoO2 x 1.3H2O between 4 and 5K as indicated by the magnetic susceptibility. The bulk compressibilities of Na0.3CoO2 x 1.3H2O, Na0.3CoO2 x 0.6H2O and Na0.3CoO2 were determined using a diamond anvil cell and synchrotron powder diffraction. Chemical changes occurring under pressure when using different pressure transmitting media are discussed and further transport measurements are advocated.
Nanocarbon-doped Fe-sheathed MgB2 tapes with different doping levels were prepared by the in situ powder-in-tube method. Compared to the undoped tapes, Jc for all the C-doped samples was enhanced by more than an order of magnitude in magnetic fields above 9 T. At 4.2 K, the transport Jc for the 5 at% doped tapes reached 1.85x104 A/cm2 at 10 T and 2.8x103 A/cm2 at 14 T, respectively. Moreover, the critical temperature for the doped tapes decreased slightly. Transmission electron microscopy showed a number of intra-granular dislocations and the dispersed nanoparticles embedded within MgB2 grains…
In the present paper we report an in-situ high-energy X-ray diffraction analysis of MgB2 tapes during the preparation process. The experiment was performed in a specifically designed furnace working in reducing atmosphere, compatible with the Laue diffraction condition. The MgB2 synthesis was realized starting from MgH2 and amorphous B in powder form as precursors, varying reaction temperature and testing different cooling processes. We analyzed both the MgB2 synthesis and the sintering process of tapes prepared with these powders. Phase evolution, micro and crystallographic structure were mon…
Recently the interest about Bi-2212 round wire superconductor for high magnetic field use has been enhancing despite the fact that an increase of the critical current is still needed to boost its successful use in such applications. Recent studies have demonstrated that the main obstacle to current flow, especially in long wires, is the residual porosity inside these Powder-In-Tube processed conductors which develops in bubbles-agglomeration when the Bi-2212 melts. Through this work we tried to overcome this issue acting on the wire densification by changing the deformation process. Here we sh…
Nb3Sn was prepared by milling Nb and Sn powder mixtures followed by limited reactions to restrict disorder recovery. Although disorder reduced the superconducting critical temperature Tc, the concomitant electron scattering increased the upper critical field mu0Hc2 to as high as 35 T at 0 K, as determined by the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg equation. Hc2 was higher for longer milling times and lower annealing temperatures. Substitution of 2% Ti for Nb did not appreciably enhance Hc2, suggesting that alloying mitigates the benefits of disorder. Since alloyed Nb3Sn wires have mu0Hc2(0) approximat…
Recent advances in MgB2 conductors are leading to a new level of performance. Based on the use of proper powders, proper chemistry, and an architecture which incorporates internal Mg diffusion (IMD), a dense MgB2 structure with not only a high critical current density Jc, but also a high engineering critical current density, Je, can be obtained. In this paper, a series of these advanced (or second - generation, "2G") conductors has been prepared. Scanning electron microscopy and associated energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were applied to characterize the microstructures and compositions of…
The Powder-In-Tube process has been employed to fabricate tape-like conductors with a strong metallic sheath and based on the newly discovered MgB2 superconducting phase. Long superconducting tapes have been prepared by packing reacted MgB2 powders inside pure Ag, Cu and Ni tubes which are then cold worked by drawing and rolling. Such tapes have shown transport properties as good as bulk MgB2 samples sintered in high pressure and high temperature conditions. At 4.2 K, the highest critical current density of 100000 A/cm2 has been achieved on Nickel-sheathed single-filament conductors. A direct …
Fe/MgB2 tapes have been prepared starting with pre-reacted binary MgB2 powders. As shown by resistive and inductive measurements, the reduction of particle size to a few microns by ball milling has little influence on Bc2, while the superconducting properties of the individual MgB2 grains are essentially unchanged. Reducing the particle size causes an enhancement of Birr from 14 to 16 T, while Jc has considerably increased at high fields, its slope Jc(B) being reduced. At 4.2K, values of 5.3*10^4 and 1.2*10^3 A/cm^2 were measured at 3.5 and 10 T, respectively, suggesting a dominant role of the…
Ex-situ Powder-In-Tube MgB2 tapes prepared with ball-milled, undoped powders showed a strong enhancement of the irreversibility field H*, the upper critical field Hc2 and the critical current density Jc(H) together with the suppression of the anisotropy of all of these quantities. Jc reached 104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K and 10 T, with an irreversibility field of about 14 T at 4.2 K, and Hc2 of 9 T at 25 K, high values for not-doped MgB2. The enhanced Jc and H* values are associated with significant grain refinement produced by milling of the MgB2 powder, which enhances grain boundary pinning, although a…
We report the realization of grain alignment in Sn-added Sr1-xKxFe2As2 superconducting tapes prepared by ex-situ powder-in-tube method. At 4.2 K, high transport critical current densities Jc of 2.5x10^4 A/cm^2 (Ic = 180 A) in self-field and 3.5x10^3 A/cm^2 (Ic = 25.5 A) in 10 T have been measured. These values are the highest ever reported so far for Fe-based superconducting wires and tapes. We believe the superior Jc in our tape samples are due to well textured grains and strengthened intergrain coupling achieved by Sn addition. Our results demonstrated an encouraging prospect for application…
Highly dense nanocrystalline MgB_2 bulk superconductors with distinctly improved pinning were prepared by mechanical alloying of Mg and B powders and hot compaction at ambient temperatures. The nanocrystalline samples reveal high critical current densities of 105 A/cm2 at 20 K and 1 T together with a strongly shifted irreversibility line towards higher fields resulting in H_irr(T) ~ 0.8 H_c2(T), whereas typically H_irr(T) ~ 0.5 H_c2(T) is observed for bulk untextured samples. These values exceed that of all other so far reported bulk samples and are in the range of the values of thin films. Th…
Studies of the doping process can provide a better understanding of the superconducting mechanisms in cuprous oxide materials. In this work, we studied the doping effects on the crystal structure, electric, morphologic and magnetic properties of the BSCCO system with the nominal composition $Bi_{1.6}Pb_{0.4}Sr_{(2-x)}RE_xCa_2Cu_3O_{(10-δ)}$. Here, the rare earth element (RE) was replaced by La in the sites of Sr. The x was ranged from 0.0 to 2.0, in steps of 0.5. The samples were prepared based on Pechini's method. The resulting powder was pressed at room temperature and the pellets were submi…
Phase-pure polycrystalline Ba0.6K0.4+xFe2As2 with were prepared using a one-step solid-state reaction method. We found that over-doping of potassium can improve critical current density (Jc). High-field Jc for samples with x = 0.1 is three times higher than that for samples with x = 0. Over-doping of K has minimal effect on the critical transition temperature (Tc). Less than 0.5 K degradations in Tc was measured for samples with x = 0.1. TEM revealed high concentration of dislocations in samples with x = 0.1, resulting in enhanced flux pining. Further analyses on magnetization loops for powder…
$MgB_2$ becomes superconducting just below 40 K. Whereas porous polycrystalline samples of $MgB_2$ can be synthesized from boron powders, in this letter we demonstrate that dense wires of $MgB_2$ can be prepared by exposing boron filaments to $Mg$ vapor. The resulting wires have a diameter of 160 $μm$, are better than 80% dense and manifest the full $χ= -1/4π$ shielding in the superconducting state. Temperature-dependent resistivity measurements indicate that $MgB_2$ is a highly conducting metal in the normal state with $ρ(40 K)$ = 0.38 $μOhm$-$cm$. Using this value, an electronic mean free pa…
Fe-sheathed MgB2 tapes were prepared through the in situ powder-in-tube technique by 5 at.% ZrSi2, ZrB2 and WSi2 doping, respectively. The doping effect of these compounds on the microstructure and superconducting properties of MgB2 tapes has been investigated by using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, transport measurements and DC susceptibility measurements. Compared to the undoped samples, Jc for all the doped samples were much improved; the best result in terms of Jc was achieved for ZrSi2 doping, by up to a factor of 3.4 at 4.2 K in magnetic fields up to 12 T. Moreover, the…
The influence of the initial MgB2 grain size on critical current density, upper critical fields and irreversibility has been studied on Fe sheathed monofilamentary MgB2 tapes prepared by the Powder-In-Tube technique. The effect of the reduction of MgB2 grain size by ball milling was mainly to enhance both the critical current density, jc, and the irreversibility field, while the upper critical field remained unchanged. The anisotropy ratio of the upper critical field between magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular the tape surface was determined to 1.3, reflecting a deformation induced text…
Measurements of the penetration depth $λ(T,H)$ in the presence of a DC magnetic field were performed in $MgB_2$ wires. In as-prepared wires $λ(T,H<130 Oe)$ shows a strong diamagnetic downturn below $\approx 10 K$. A DC magnetic field of $130 Oe$ completely suppressed the downturn. The data are consistent with proximity coupling to a surface $Mg$ layer left during synthesis. A theory for the proximity effect in the clean limit, together with an assumed distribution of the $Mg$ layer thickness, qualitatively explains the field and temperature dependence of the data. Removal of the $Mg$ by chemic…
We report the phase diagram for the superconducting system (${^{7}}$Li${_{1-x}}$Fe${_{x}}$OD)FeSe and contrast it with that of (Li${_{1-x}}$Fe${_{x}}$OH)FeSe both in single crystal and powder forms. Samples were prepared via hydrothermal methods and characterized with laboratory and synchrotron X-ray diffraction, high-resolution neutron powder diffraction (NPD), and high intensity NPD. We find a correlation between the tetragonality of the unit cell parameters and the critical temperature, $T_{c}$, which is indicative of the effects of charge doping on the lattice and formation of iron vacanci…
SmFeAsO and the isostructural superconducting SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) samples were prepared. Characterization by means of Rietveld refinement of X-ray powder diffraction data, scanning electron microscope observation, transmission electron microscope analysis, resistivity and magnetization measurements were carried out. Sintering treatment strongly improves the grain connectivity, but, on the other hand, induces a competition between the thermodynamic stability of the oxy-pnictide and Sm2O3, hence worsening the purity of the sample. In the pristine sample both magnetization and resistivity measurem…
The microstructures of MgB2 wires prepared by the powder-in-tube technique and subsequent hot isostatic pressing were investigated using transmission electron microscopy. Large amount of crystalline defects including small angle twisting, tilting, and bending boundaries, in which high densities of dislocations reside, were found forming sub-grains within MgB2 grains. It is believed that these defects resulted from particle deformation during the hot isostatic pressing process and are effective flux pinning centers that contribute to the high critical current densities of the wires at high temp…
Transport current values of 7.5 x 104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K and self-field are reported for MbB2-based tapes. MgB2 strands were formed by directly filling commercially available MgB2 powder into Nb-lined, monel tubes and wire drawing. The wires were then rolled into tapes 2.56 x 0.32 mm2, with a total superconducting cross section of 0.2319 mm2. Transport measurements were performed using a standard four-point technique at T = 4.2 K (in liquid helium) and at self field. Three samples were prepared, with heat treatments of 900C for 1, 2, and 3 h under 1/3 at Ar. Measured values of transport cu…
MgB2/Fe tapes with 2.5-15 at.% ZrB2 additions were prepared through the in situ powder-in-tube method. Compared to the pure tape, a significant improvement in the in-field critical current density Jc was observed, most notably for 10 at.% doping, while the critical temperature decreased slightly. At 4.2 K, the transport Jc for the 10 at.% doped sample increased by more than an order of magnitude than the undoped one in magnetic fields above 9 T. Nanoscale segregates or defects caused by the ZrB2 additions which act as effective flux pinning centers are proposed to be the main reason for the im…
We have determined the superconducting and magnetic properties of a hydrothermally synthesized powder sample of tetragonal FeS using muon spin rotation (μSR). The superconducting properties are entirely consistent with those of a recently published study, showing fully gapped behavior and giving a penetration depth of λ_{ab} = 204(3) nm. However, our zero-field μSR data are rather different and indicate the presence of a small, non-superconducting magnetic phase within the sample. These results highlight that sample-to-sample variations in magnetism can arise in hydrothermally prepared phases,…
MoSi2 doped MgB2 tapes with different doping levels were prepared through the in-situ powder-in-tube method using Fe as the sheath material. Effect of MoSi2 doping on the MgB2/Fe tapes was investigated. It is found that the highest JC value was achieved in the 2.5 at.% doped samples, more than a factor of 4 higher compared to the undoped tapes at 4.2 K, 10 T, then further increasing the doping ratio caused a reduction of JC. Moreover, all doped tapes exhibited improved magnetic field dependence of Jc. The enhancement of JC-B properties in MoSi2 doped MgB2 tapes is attributed to good grain link…
Nanoscale defects in superconductors play a dominant role in enhancing superconducting properties through electron scattering, modulation of coherence length, and correlation with quantized magnetic flux. For iron-based superconductors (IBSCs) that are expected to be employed in high-field magnetic applications, a fundamental question is whether such defects develop an upper critical field (Hc2) similar to that of conventional BCS-type superconductors. Herein, we report the first demonstration of a significantly improved Hc2 in a 122-phase IBSC by introducing defects through high-energy millin…
The one-pot method focuses on the reduction of the number of steps or chemical reactions in the synthesis of materials, and it is very appealing in terms of sustainability. In addition to this point of view, superconductors are desired materials due to their unusual properties, such as the zero resistivity and the perfect diamagnetism. One-pot, Thus, in this work, we described the one-pot synthesis of YBa2Cu3O7-δ superconducting ceramic. In just two steps and a few hours, a polymer composite solution was prepared, which originates a powder after burning the polymer out with pure phase and with…
We have successfully prepared the new layered oxypnictides $Sr_4Sc_2O_6M_2As_2$ (M=Fe and Co). They adopt the tetragonal structure, being the same as that of $Sr_4Sc_2O_6Fe_2P_2$. The lattice constants are a=0.4045 nm and c= 0.5802 nm for M=Fe, and a=0.4045 nm and c=1.5695 nm for M=Co, respectively. Their transport and magnetic properties have been systematically studied. The temperature dependence of Hall coefficient and thermoelectric powder for $Sr_4Sc_2O_6Fe_2As_2$ compound show complicated behavior, similar to that of iron-based parent compounds LnOFeAs and $BaFe_2As_2$. It suggests that …
