Let $p$ be an odd prime. Let $F/k$ be a cyclic extension of degree $p$ and of characteristic different from $p$. The explicit constructions of the non-abelian $p^{3}$-extensions over $k$, are induced by certain elements in ${F(μ_{p})}^{*}$. In this paper we let $k=\QQ$ and present sufficient conditions for these elements to be suitable for the constructions. Polynomials for the non-abelian groups of order 27 over $\QQ$ are constructed.
Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field K and let Kab be the maximal abelian extension of K. We show that there only finitely many torsion points of A which are defined over Kab iff A has no abelian subvariety with complex multiplication over K. We use this to give another proof of Ribet's result that A has only finitely many torsion points which are defined over the cyclotomic extension of K.
In this paper we find the genus field of finite abelian extensions of the global rational function field. We introduce the term conductor of constants for these extensions and determine it in terms of other invariants. We study the particular case of finite abelian $p$--extensions and give an explicit description of their genus field.
In this work we present some arithmetic properties of families of abelian $p$--extensions of global function fields, among which are their generators and their type of ramification and decomposition.
We show that, for an abelian variety defined over a $p$-adic field $K$ which has potential good reduction, its torsion subgroup with values in the composite field of $K$ and a certain Lubin-Tate extension over a $p$-adic field is finite.
We prove the local equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for the motive of an abelian extension of an imaginary quadratic field with the action of the Galois group ring for all split primes p not equal to 2 or 3 at all negative integer values s.
We give the complete proof of a conjecture of Georges Gras which claims that, for any extension $K/k$ of number fields in which at least one infinite place is totally split, every ideal $I$ of $K$ principalizes in the compositum $Kk^{ab}$ of $K$ with the maximal abelian extension $k^{ab}$ of $k$
We prove new results concerning the additive Galois module structure of certain wildly ramified finite non-abelian extensions of Q. In particular, when K/Q is a Galois extension with Galois group G isomorphic to A4, S4 or A5, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the ring of integers of K to be free over its associated order in the rational group algebra Q[G].
Let $k$ be a finite field. Wintenberger used the field of norms to give an equivalence between a category whose objects are totally ramified abelian $p$-adic Lie extensions $E/F$, where $F$ is a local field with residue field $k$, and a category whose objects are pairs $(K,A)$, where $K\cong k((T))$ and $A$ is an abelian $p$-adic Lie subgroup of $\Aut_k(K)$. In this paper we extend this equivalence to allow $\Gal(E/F)$ and $A$ to be arbitrary abelian pro-$p$ groups.
Let p be an odd prime, and k_\infty the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of an abelian field k. For a finite set S of rational primes which does not include p, we will consider the maximal S-ramified abelian pro-p extension M_S(k_\infty) over k_\infty. We shall give a formula of the Z_p-rank of Gal(M_S(k_\infty)/k_\infty). In the proof of this formula, we also show that M_{q}(k_\infty)/L(k_\infty) is a finite extension for every real abelian field k and every rational prime q distinct from p, where L(k_\infty) is the maximal unramified abelian pro-p extension over k_\infty.
In this paper we present a classification of the possible upper ramification jumps for an elementary abelian p-extension of a p-adic field. The fundamental step for the proof of the main result is the computation of the ramification filtration for the maximal elementary abelian p-extension of the base field K. This is a generalization of a previous work of the second author and Dvornicich where the same result is proved under the assumption that K contains a primitive p-th root of unity. Using the class field theory and the explicit relations between the normic group of an extension and its ra…
Given an abelian variety J and an abelian subvariety A of J over a number field K, we study the visible elements of the Shafarevich-Tate group of A with respect to J over certain number field extension M of K. The notion of visible elements in Shafarevich-Tate group of an abelian variety was introduced by Mazur. In this article, we study the image of Visible elements of A with respect to J under the natural restriction map of the Galois cohomology of A over K to the Galois cohomology of A over M. In particular, for a fixed odd prime p, we investigate the conditions under which visible elements…
In the present work we give the construction of the genus field and the extended genus field of an elementary abelian $l$-extension of a field of rational functions, where $l$ is a prime number. In the Kummer case, if $K$ is contained in a cyclotomic funtion field, the construction is given using Leopoldt's ideas by means of Dirichlet characters. Following the definition of Anglès and Jaulent of extended Hilbert class field, we obtain the extended genus field of an elementary abelian $l$-extension of a field of rational functions.
For a real abelian field and for an odd prime p splitting in the field, we study a map between the p-parts of the class group and of the quotient of units modulo Cyclotomic Units, respectively, along the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of the field. We determine the kernel and the cokernel of this map assuming Greenberg's conjecture on the vanishing of the lambda-invariant of the extension.
Let $U/L$ be a finite abelian extension of number fields. We first construct a universal primitive generator of $U$ over $L$ whose relative trace to any intermediate field $F$ becomes a generator of $F$ over $L$, too. We also develop a similar argument in terms of norm. As its examples we investigate towers of ray class fields over imaginary quadratic fields. And, we further present a new method of finding a normal element for the extension $U/L$.
Given a number field $K$, a finite abelian group $G$ and finitely many elements $α_1,\ldots,α_t\in K$, we construct abelian extensions $L/K$ with Galois group $G$ that realise all of the elements $α_1,\ldots,α_t$ as norms of elements in $L$. In particular, this shows existence of such extensions for any given parameters. Our approach relies on class field theory and a recent formulation of Tate's characterisation of the Hasse norm principle, a local-global principle for norms. The constructions are sufficiently explicit to be implemented on a computer, and we illustrate them with concrete exam…
Let $F$ be a global function field of characteristic $p>0$ and $A/F$ an abelian variety. Let $K/F$ be an $ł$-adic Lie extension ($ł\neq p$) unramified outside a finite set of primes $S$ and such that $\Gal(K/F)$ has no elements of order $ł$. We shall prove that, under certain conditions, $Sel_A(K)_ł^\vee$ has no nontrivial pseudo-null submodule.
We describe explicit realizations of those groups with exactly two ramified primes, without consider Scholz conditions.
Elementary abelian groups are finite groups in the form of $A=(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})^r$ for a prime number $p$. For every integer $\ell>1$ and $r>1$, we prove a non-trivial upper bound on the $\ell$-torsion in class groups of every $A$-extension. Our results are pointwise and unconditional. When $r$ is large enough, the pointwise bound we obtain also breaks the previously best known bound shown by Ellenberg-Venkatesh under GRH.
We prove the Iwasawa-theoretic version of a Conjecture of Mazur--Rubin and Sano in the case of elliptic units. This allows us to derive the $p$-part of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture at $s = 0$ for abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields in the semi-simple case and, provided that a standard $μ$-vanishing hypothesis is satisfied, also in the general case.
Let $p$ be a prime number and let $K$ be a finite extension of the field $\mathbb{Q}_p$ of $p$-adic numbers. Let $N$ be a fully ramified, elementary abelian extension of $K$. Under a mild hypothesis on the extension $N/K$, we show that every element of $N$ with valuation congruent mod $[N:K]$ to the largest lower ramification number of $N/K$ generates a normal basis for $N$ over $K$.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, and let $\mathbb{Q}^{ab}$ be the maximal abelian extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. In this article we classify the groups that can arise as $E(\mathbb{Q}^{ab})_{\text{tors}}$ up to isomorphism. The method illustrates techniques for finding explicit models of modular curves of mixed level structure. Moreover we provide an explicit algorithm to compute $E(\mathbb{Q}^{ab})_{\text{tors}}$ for any elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$.
Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field and $K_\infty$ be the $\mathbf{Z}_p^2$-extension of $K$. Answering a question of Ahmed and Lim, we show that the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer group associated to a supersingular polarized abelian variety admits an algebraic functional equation. The proof uses the theory of $Γ$-system developed by Lai, Longhi, Tan and Trihan. We also show the algebraic functional equation holds for Sprung's chromatic Selmer groups of supersingular elliptic curves along $K_\infty$.
We propose a conjectural characterization of when the dynamical Galois group associated to a polynomial is abelian, and we prove our conjecture in several cases, including the stable quadratic case over ${\mathbb Q}$. In the postcritically infinite case, the proof uses algebraic techniques, including a result concerning ramification in towers of cyclic $p$-extensions. In the postcritically finite case, the proof uses the theory of heights together with results of Amoroso-Zannier and Amoroso-Dvornicich, as well as properties of the Arakelov-Zhang pairing.
Let E be an elliptic curve over the rationals. Let L be an infinite Galois extension of the rationals with uniformly bounded local degrees at almost all primes. We will consider the infinite extension L(E_tor) of the rationals where we adjoin all coordinates of torsion points of E. In this paper we will prove an effective lower bound for the height of non-zero elements in L(E_tor) that are not a root of unity.
We derive an asymptotic formula which counts the number of abelian extensions of prime degrees over rational function fields. Specifically, let $\ell$ be a rational prime and $K$ a rational function field $\Bbb F_q(t)$ with $\ell \nmid q$. Let $\textup{Disc}_f\left(F/K\right)$ denote the finite discriminant of $F$ over $K$. Denote the number of abelian $\ell$-extensions $F/K$ with $\textup{deg}\left(\textup{Disc}_f(F/K)\right) = (\ell-1)αn$ by $a_{\ell}(n)$, where $α=α(q, \ell)$ is the order of $q$ in the multiplicative group $\left(\Bbb Z/\ell \Bbb Z\right)^\times$. We give a explicit asympto…
We define a variant of normal basis, called a {\em Galois scaffolding}, that allows for an easy determination of valuation, and has implications for Galois module structure. We identify fully ramified, elementary abelian extensions of local function fields of characteristic $p$, called {\em one-dimensional}, that, in a particular sense, are as simple as cyclic degree $p$ extensions, and prove the statement in the title above.
Let K be a local field whose residue field is a finite field of characteristic p, and let L/K be a finite totally ramified Galois extension. Fried and Heiermann defined the "indices of inseparability" of L/K, a refinement of the ramification data of L/K. We give a method for computing the indices of inseparability of the extension L/K in terms of the norm group N_{L/K}(L^*) in the case where K has characteristic p and Gal(L/K) is an elementary abelian p-group with a single ramification break. In some cases our methods lead to simple formulas for the indices of inseparability.
We determine the Galois module structure of the parameterizing space of elementary $p$-abelian extensions of a field $K$ when $\text{Gal}(K/F)$ is any finite $p$-group, under the assumption that the maximal pro-$p$ quotient of the absolute Galois group of $F$ is a free, finitely generated pro-$p$ group, and that $F$ contains a primitive $p$th root of unity if $\text{char}(F) \neq p$.
Given a number field $K$ one associates to it the set $Λ_K$ of Dedekind zeta-functions of finite abelian extensions of $K$. In this short note we present a proof of the following Theorem: for any number field $K$ the set $Λ_K$ determines the isomorphism class of $K$. This means that if for any number field $K'$ the two sets $Λ_K$ and $Λ_{K'}$ coincide, then $K \simeq K'$. As a consequence of this fact we deduce an alternative approach towards the proof of Neukirch-Uchida Theorem for the case of non-normal extensions of number fields.
We give a completely normal element in the maximal real subfield of a cyclotomic field over the field of rational numbers, which is different from that of Okada. This result is a consequence of the criterion for a normal element developed in [Normal bases of ray class fields over imaginary quadratic fields, Math. Zeit.]. Furthermore, we find a completely normal element in certain extension of modular function fields in terms of a quotient of the modular discriminant function.
This paper justifies an assertion in (Elder, Proc AMS 137 (2009), no 4, 1193--1203) that Galois scaffolds make the questions of Galois module structure tractable. Let $k$ be a perfect field of characteristic $p$ and let $K=k((T))$. For the class of characteristic $p$ elementary abelian $p$-extensions $L/K$ with Galois scaffolds described in mentioned paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the valuation ring $\mathfrak{O}_L$ to be free over its associated order $\mathcal{A}_{L/K}$ in $K[\Gal(L/K)]$. Interestingly, this condition agrees with the condition found by Y. Miyata, con…
Let $G\subset x{\mathbb F}_q[\![x]\!]$ ($q$ is a power of the prime $p$) be a subset of formal power series over a finite field such that it forms a compact abelian $p$-adic Lie group of dimension $d\ge 1$. We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the APF extension of local field corresponding to $\left({\mathbb F}_q(\!(x)\!), G\right)$ under the field of norms functor to be an extension of $p$-adic fields. We then apply this result to study family of invertible power series with coefficients in a $p$-adic integers ring and commute with a fixed noninvertible power series under the…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a $p$-adic field $K$ and $L$ an algebraic infinite extension over $K$. We consider the finiteness of the torsion part of the group of rational points $A(L)$ under some assumptions. In 1975, Hideo Imai proved that such a group is finite if $A$ has good reduction and $L$ is the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$. In this talk, first we show a generalization of Imai's result in the case where $A$ has ordinary good reduction. Next we give some finiteness results when $A$ is an elliptic curve and $L$ is the field generated by the $p$-power torsion of an el…
For a number field K and a finite abelian group G, we determine the probabilities of various local completions of a random G-extension of K when extensions are ordered by conductor. In particular, for a fixed prime p of K, we determine the probability that p splits into r primes in a random G-extension of K that is unramified at p. We find that these probabilities are nicely behaved and mostly independent. This is in analogy to Chebotarev's density theorem, which gives the probability that in a fixed extension a random prime of K splits into r primes in the extension. We also give the asymptot…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $F$ with supersingular reduction at all primes of $F$ above $p$. We establish an equivalence between the weak Leopoldt conjecture and the expected value of the corank of the classical Selmer group of $A$ over a $p$-adic Lie extension (not neccesasily containing the cyclotomic $\Zp$-extension). As an application, we obtain the exactness of the defining sequence of the Selmer group. In the event that the $p$-adic Lie extension is one-dimensional, we show that the dual Selmer group has no nontrivial finite submodules. Finally, we show that…
Let $F$ be a number field unramified at an odd prime $p$ and $F_\infty$ be the $\mathbf{Z}_p$-cyclotomic extension of $F$. Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over $F$ with good supersingular reduction at all primes of $F$ above $p$. Büyükboduk and the first named author have defined modified Selmer groups associated to $A$ over $F_\infty$. Assuming that the Pontryagin dual of these Selmer groups are torsion $\mathbf{Z}_p[[\mathrm{Gal}(F_\infty/F)]]$-modules, we give an explicit sufficient condition for the rank of the Mordell-Weil group $A(F_n)$ to be bounded as $n$ varies.
In a recent paper, Moshe Jarden proposed a conjecture, later named the Kuykian conjecture, which states that if A is an abelian variety defined over a Hilbertian field K, then every intermediate field of K(A_{tor})/K is Hilbertian. We prove that the conjecture holds for Galois extensions of K in K(A_{tor}).
Let $p$ be a prime number. Mazur proved that a geometrically maximal unramified abelian covering of $X_0(p)$ over $\mathbb Q$ is given by the Shimura covering $X_2(p) \to X_0(p)$, that is, a unique subcovering of $X_1(p) \to X_0(p)$ of degree $N_p := (p-1)/\gcd(p-1, 12)$. In this short paper, we show that a geometrically maximal abelian covering $X_2'(p) \to X_0(p)$ of $X_0(p)$ over $\mathbb Q$ unramified outside cusps is cyclic of degree $2N_p$. The main ingredient for the construction of $X_2'(p)$ is the generalized Dedelind eta functions.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over the rationals. We will consider the infinite extension $\mathbb{Q}(E_{\text{tor}})$ of the rationals where we adjoin all coordinates of torsion points of $E$. In this paper we will prove an explicit lower bound for the height of non-zero elements in $\mathbb{Q}(E_{\text{tor}})$ that are not a root of unity, only depending on the conductor of the elliptic curve. As a side result we will give an explicit bound for a small supersingular prime for an elliptic curve.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over the rationals without complex multiplication. The field $F$ generated by all torsion points of $E$ is an infinite, non-abelian Galois extension of the rationals which has unbounded, wild ramification above all primes. We prove that the absolute logarithmic Weil height of an element of $F$ is either zero or bounded from below by a positive constant depending only on $E$. We also show that the Néron-Tate height has a similar gap on $E(F)$ and use this to determine the structure of the group $E(F)$.
In this paper we first obtain the genus field of a finite abelian non-Kummer $l$--extension of a global rational function field. Then, using that the genus field of a composite of two abelian extensions of a global rational function field with relatively prime degrees is equal to the composite of their respective genus fields and our previous results, we deduce the general expression of the genus field of a finite abelian extension of a global rational function field.
We prove an analogue of the Tate conjecture on homomorphisms of abelian varieties over infinite cyclotomic extensions of finitely generated fields of characteristic zero.
