Given a number field $K$, a finite abelian group $G$ and finitely many elements $α_1,\ldots,α_t\in K$, we construct abelian extensions $L/K$ with Galois group $G$ that realise all of the elements $α_1,\ldots,α_t$ as norms of elements in $L$. In particular, this shows existence of such extensions for any given parameters.
Our approach relies on class field theory and a recent formulation of Tate's characterisation of the Hasse norm principle, a local-global principle for norms. The constructions are sufficiently explicit to be implemented on a computer, and we illustrate them with concrete examples.
In this article we construct for each integer $n\ge 2$ an abelian variety $A$ of dimension $n$ defined over a number field for which there exists a symmetric slope sequence of length $2n$ that does not appear as the slope sequence of $\widetilde A$ for all good reductions $\widetilde A$ of $A$.
We present an algorithm that, on input of a CM-field $K$, an integer $k\ge1$, and a prime $r \equiv 1 \bmod k$, constructs a $q$-Weil number $π\in Ø_K$ corresponding to an ordinary, simple abelian variety $A$ over the field $\F$ of $q$ elements that has an $\F$-rational point of order $r$ and embedding degree $k$ with respect to $r$. We then discuss how CM-methods over $K$ can be used to explicitly construct $A$.
In this paper we show that two dimensional (mod p) Galois representations satisfying mild hypotheses can be lifted to p-adic Galois representations ramified at infinitely many primes such that the characteristic polynomials of Frobenius at a density one set of unramified primes are defined over the rational integers. In particular we show that often one can "density one compatibly" lift mod p and mod q Galois representations.
We present a method for constructing optimized equations for the modular curve X_1(N) using a local search algorithm on a suitably defined graph of birationally equivalent plane curves. We then apply these equations over a finite field F_q to efficiently generate elliptic curves with nontrivial N-torsion by searching for affine points on X_1(N)(F_q), and we give a fast method for generating curves with (or without) a point of order 4N using X_1(2N).
Let A be an abelian surface over F_q, the field of q elements. The rational points on A/\F_q form an abelian group A(\F_q) \simeq \Z/n_1\Z \times \Z/n_1 n_2 \Z \times \Z/n_1 n_2 n_3\Z \times\Z/n_1 n_2 n_3 n_4\Z. We are interested in knowing which groups of this shape actually arise as the group of points on some abelian surface over some finite field. For a fixed prime power q, a characterization of the abelian groups that occur was recently found by Rybakov. One can use this characterization to obtain a set of congruences modulo the integers $n_1, n_2, n_3, n_4$ on certain combinations of coe…
We prove that for every positive integer $m$, there exist infinitely many simple abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_2$ of order $m$. The method is constructive, building on the work of Madan--Pal in the case $m=1$ to produce an explicit sequence of Weil polynomials giving rise to abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_2$ of order $m$. This sequence itself depends on the choice of a suitable generalized binary representation of $m$; by making careful choices of this representation, we can ensure that the the resulting sequence of polynomials have 2-adic Newton polygons which guarantee the existence…
The second part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer (BSD) conjecture gives a conjectural formula for the order of the Shafarevich-Tate group of an elliptic curve in terms of other computable invariants of the curve. Cremona and Mazur initiated a theory that can often be used to verify the BSD conjecture by constructing non-trivial elements of the Shafarevich-Tate group of an elliptic curve by means of the Mordell-Weil group of an ambient curve. In this paper, we generalize Cremona and Mazur's work and give precise conditions under which such a construction can be made for the Shafarevich-Tate gro…
For a given elliptic curve $E_0$ defined over a number field $k$, we construct two families of elliptic curves whose mod 3 representations are isomorphic to that of $E_0$. The isomorphisms in the first family are symplectic, and those in the second family are anti-symplectic. Our construction is based on the notion of Hessian and Cayleyan curves in classical geometry.
Given a prime power $q$ and $n \gg 1$, we prove that every integer in a large subinterval of the Hasse--Weil interval $[(\sqrt{q}-1)^{2n},(\sqrt{q}+1)^{2n}]$ is $#A(\mathbb{F}_q)$ for some geometrically simple ordinary principally polarized abelian variety $A$ of dimension $n$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. As a consequence, we generalize a result of Howe and Kedlaya for $\mathbb{F}_2$ to show that for each prime power $q$, every sufficiently large positive integer is realizable, i.e., $#A(\mathbb{F}_q)$ for some abelian variety $A$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Our result also improves upon the best known const…
In this paper, we describe the construction of superelliptic curves with a rational point of prescribed order on their jacobians. The construction is based on Hensel's Lemma and produces for a given integer $N$ a superelliptic curve of genus linear in $N$ with a rational $N$-division point on the jacobian. The method is illustrated with multiple examples.
For a function field $k$ over a finite field with $\mathbb{F}_q$ as the field of constant, and a finite abelian group $G$ whose exponent is divisible by $q-1$, we study the distribution of zeta zeroes for a random $G$-extension of $k$, ordered by the degree of conductors. We prove that when the degree goes to infinity, the number of zeta zeroes lying in a prescribed arc is uniformly distributed and the variance follows a Gaussian distribution.
Constructing families of abelian varieties of $\text{GL}_2$-type over $4$-punctured complex projective line via $p$-adic Hodge theory and Langlands correspondence and application to algebraic solutions of Painleve VI equation
We study the inverse Galois problem with local conditions. In particular, we ask whether every finite group occurs as the Galois group of a Galois extension of $\mathbb{Q}$ all of whose decomposition groups are cyclic (resp., abelian). This property is known for all solvable groups due to Shafarevich's solution of the inverse Galois problem for those groups. It is however completely open for nonsolvable groups. In this paper, we provide general criteria to attack such questions via specialization of function field extensions, and in particular give the first infinite families of Galois realiza…
In this paper we introduce the concept of $\mathit{integral}$ $\mathit{Frobenius}$ to formulate an integral analogue of the classical compatibility condition linking the collection of rational Tate modules $V_λ(A)$ arising from abelian varieties over number fields with real multiplication. Our main result gives a recipe for constructing an integral Frobenius when the real multiplication field has class number one. By exploiting algorithms already existing in the literature, we investigate this construction for three modular abelian surfaces over $\mathbf{Q}$.
Let $F$ be an algebraic extension of the rational numbers and $E$ an elliptic curve defined over some number field contained in $F$. The absolute logarithmic Weil height, respectively the Néron-Tate height, induces a norm on $F^*$ modulo torsion, respectively on $E(F)$ modulo torsion. The groups $F^*$ and $E(F)$ are free abelian modulo torsion if the height function does not attain arbitrarily small positive values. In this paper we prove the failure of the converse to this statement by explicitly constructing counterexamples.
It is well-known for an elliptic curve with complex multiplication that the existence of a $\mathbb{Q}$-rational model is equivalent to its field of moduli being equal to $\mathbb{Q}$, or its endomorphism ring being the ring of integers of 9 possible fields ($\ast$). Murabayashi and Umegaki proved analogous results for abelian surfaces. For three dimensional CM abelian varieties with rational fields of moduli, Chun narrowed down to a list of 37 possible CM fields. In this paper, we show that his list is exact. By constructing certain Hecke characters that satisfy a theorem of Shimura, we prove…

In this paper we prove that an abelian group contains $(2^{2m+1}(2^{m-1}+1), 2^m(2^m+1), 2^m)$-difference sets with $m\geqslant 3$ if and only if it contains an elementary abelian 2-group of order $2^{2m}$. Our proof shows that the method of constructing such difference sets is essentially unique.
We present a very efficient algorithm to construct an elliptic curve E and a finite field F such that the order of the point group E(F) is a given prime number N. Heuristically, this algorithm only takes polynomial time Otilde((\log N)^3), and it is so fast that it may profitably be used to tackle the related problem of finding elliptic curves with point groups of prime order of prescribed size. We also discuss the impact of the use of high level modular functions to reduce the run time by large constant factors and show that recent gonality bounds for modular curves imply limits on the time r…
This work presents author's explicit methods of constructing abelian extensions of complete discrete valuation fields. His approach to explicit equations of a cyclic extension of degree p^n which contains a given cyclic extension of degree p is explained.
