Let $K/k$ be a finite abelian CM-extension and $T$ a suitable finite set of finite primes of $k$. In this paper, we determine the Fitting ideal of the minus component of the $T$-ray class group of $K$, except for the $2$-component, assuming the validity of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture. As an application, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the Stickelberger element to lie in that Fitting ideal.
Kurihara established a refinement of the minus-part of the Iwasawa main conjecture for totally real number fields using the higher Fitting ideals. In this paper, by using Kurihara's methods and Mazur-Rubin theory, we study the higher Fitting ideals of the plus-part of Iwasawa modules associated the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of abelian fields for an odd prime number p. We define the higher cyclotomic ideals C_i for any non-negative integer i, which are ideals of the Iwasawa algebra defined by the Kolyvagin derivative classes of circular units, and prove that they give upper and lower bounds of t…
Kurihara established a refinement of the minus-part of the Iwasawa main conjecture for totally real number fields using the higher Fitting ideals. In this paper, we study the higher Fitting ideals of the plus-part of the Iwasawa module associated to the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of Q(μ_p) for an odd prime number p by similar methods as in Kurihara's work. We define the higher cyclotomic ideals C_i, which are ideals of the Iwasawa algebra defined by the Kolyvagin derivatives of cyclotomic units, and prove that they give upper bounds of the higher Fitting ideals. Our result can be regarded as a r…
We completely calculate the Fitting ideal of the classical $p$-ramified Iwasawa module for any abelian extension $K/k$ of totally real fields, using the shifted Fitting ideals recently developed by the second author. This generalizes former results by the first and third authors where we had to assume that only $p$-adic places may ramify in $K/k$. One of the important ingredients is the computation of some complexes in appropriate derived categories.
We study equivariant Iwasawa theory for two-variable abelian extensions of an imaginary quadratic field. One of the main goals of this paper is to describe the Fitting ideals of Iwasawa modules using $p$-adic $L$-functions. We also provide an application to Selmer groups of elliptic curves with complex multiplication.
In our previous work, by using Kolyvagin derivatives of elliptic units, we constructed ideals C_i of the Iwasawa algebra, and proved that the ideals C_i become "upper bounds" of the higher Fitting ideals of the one and two variable p-adic unramified Iwasawa module X over an abelian extension field K_0 of an imaginary quadratic field K. In this article, by using "non-arithmetic" specialization arguments, we prove that the ideals C_i also become "lower bounds" of the higher Fitting ideals of X. In particular, we show that the ideals C_i determine the pseudo-isomorphism class of X. Note that in t…
We generalize some results of Greither and Popescu to a geometric Galois cover $X\rightarrow Y$ which appears naturally for example in extensions generated by $\mathfrak{p}^n$-torsion points of a rank 1 normalized Drinfeld module (i.e. in subextensions of Carlitz-Hayes cyclotomic extensions of global fields of positive characteristic). We obtain a description of the Fitting ideal of class groups (or of their dual) via a formula involving Stickelberger elements and providing a link (similar to the one in \cite{ABBL}) with Goss $ζ$-function.
In this paper, we study the Fitting ideals of Selmer groups over finite subextensions in the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$ of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. Especially, we present a proof of the "weak main conjecture" à la Mazur and Tate for elliptic curves with good (supersingular) reduction at an odd prime $p$. We also prove the "strong main conjecture" suggested by the second named author under the validity of the $\pm$-main conjecture and the vanishing of a certain error term. The key idea is the explicit comparison among "finite layer objects", "$\pm$-objects",…
The Jacobian group of a graph is a finite abelian group through which we can study the graph in an algebraic way. When the graph is a finite abelian covering of another graph, the Jacobian group is equipped with the action of the Galois group. In this paper, we study the Fitting ideal of the Jacobian group as a module over the group ring. We also study the corresponding question for infinite coverings. Additionally, this paper includes module-theoretic approach to Iwasawa theory for graphs.
We introduce a new ideal {\mathfrak D} of the p-adic Galois group-ring associated to a real abelian field and a related ideal {\mathfrak J} for imaginary abelian fields. Both result from an equivariant, Kummer-type pairing applied to Stark units in a Z_p-tower of abelian fields and {\mathfrak J} is linked by explicit reciprocity to a third ideal {\mathfrak S} studied more generally in a previous work. This leads to a new and unifying framework for the Iwasawa Theory of such fields including a real analogue of Stickelberger's Theorem, links with certain Fitting ideals and Λ-torsion submodules, …
The main conjectures in Iwasawa theory predict the relationship between the Iwasawa modules and the $p$-adic $L$-functions. Using a certain proved formulation of the main conjecture, Greither and Kurihara described explicitly the (initial) Fitting ideals of the Iwasawa modules for the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of finite abelian extensions of totally real fields. In this paper, we generalize the algebraic theory behind their work by developing the theory of ``shifts of Fitting invariants.'' As applications to Iwasawa theory, we obtain a noncommutative version and a two-variable versi…
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be an abelian variety over a number field, with a good reduction at a prime ideal containing a prime number $p$. Denote by ${\rm A}$ an abelian variety over a finite field of characteristic $p$, obtained by the reduction of $\mathcal{A}$ at the prime ideal. In this paper we derive an algorithm which allows to decompose the group scheme ${\rm A}[p]$ into indecomposable quasi-polarized ${\rm BT}_1$-group schemes. This can be done for the unramified $p$ on the basis of its decomposition into prime ideals in the endomorphism algebra of ${\rm A}$. We also compute all types of such…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a global field $F$ of positive characteristic $p$ and let $\calf/F$ be a $\Z_p^{\N}$-extension, unramified outside a finite set of places of $F$. Assuming that all ramified places are totally ramified, we define a pro-characteristic ideal associated to the Pontrjagin dual of the $p$-primary Selmer group of $A$, in order to formulate an Iwasawa Main Conjecture for the non-noetherian commutative Iwasawa algebra $\Z_p[[\Gal(\calf/F)]]$ (which we also prove for a constant abelian variety). To do this we first show the relation between the characteristic i…
To each finitely presented module M over a commutative ring R one can associate an R-ideal Fit_R(M) which is called the (zeroth) Fitting ideal of M over R and which is always contained in the R-annihilator of M. In an earlier article, the second author generalised this notion by replacing R with a (not necessarily commutative) o-order Lambda in a finite dimensional separable algebra, where o is an integrally closed complete commutative noetherian local domain. To obtain annihilators, one has to multiply the Fitting invariant of a (left) Lambda-module M by a certain ideal H(Lambda) of the centr…
Let $K$ be a global function field and fix a place $\infty$ of $K$. Let $L/K$ be a finite real abelian extension, i.e. a finite, abelian extension such that $\infty$ splits completely in $L$. Then we define a group of elliptic units $C_L$ in $\mathcal{O}_L^\times$ analogously to Sinnott's cyclotomic units and compute the index $[\mathcal{O}_L^\times:C_L]$. In the second part of this article, we additionally assume that $L$ is a cyclic extension of prime power degree. Then we can use the methods from Greither and Kučera to take certain roots of these elliptic units and prove a result on the ann…
We study the special value $u=1$ of Artin-Ihara $L$-functions associated to characters of the automorphism group of abelian covers of multigraphs. In particular, we show an annihilation statement analogous to a classical conjecture of Brumer on annihilation of class groups for abelian extensions of number fields and we also calculate the index of an ideal analogous to the classical Stickelberger ideal in algebraic number theory. Along the way, we make some observations about the number of spanning trees in abelian multigraph coverings that may be of independent interest.
Let $p$ be a prime. Let $(R,\ideal{m})$ be a regular local ring of mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ and absolute index of ramification $e$. We provide general criteria of when each abelian scheme over $\Spec R\setminus\{\ideal{m}\}$ extends to an abelian scheme over $\Spec R$. We show that such extensions always exist if $e\le p-1$, exist in most cases if $p\le e\le 2p-3$, and do not exist in general if $e\ge 2p-2$. The case $e\le p-1$ implies the uniqueness of integral canonical models of Shimura varieties over a discrete valuation ring $O$ of mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ and index of ramificatio…
To each finitely presented module $M$ over a commutative ring $R$ one can associate an $R$-ideal $\mathrm{Fitt}_{R}(M)$, which is called the (zeroth) Fitting ideal of $M$ over $R$. This is of interest because it is always contained in the $R$-annihilator $\mathrm{Ann}_{R}(M)$ of $M$, but is often much easier to compute. This notion has recently been generalised to that of so-called `Fitting invariants' over certain noncommutative rings; the present author considered the case in which $R$ is an $\mathfrak{o}$-order $Λ$ in a finite dimensional separable algebra, where $\mathfrak{o}$ is an integr…
Fix an ordinary abelian variety defined over a finite field. The ideal class group of its endomorphism ring acts freely on the set of isogenous varieties with same endomorphism ring, by complex multiplication. Any subgroup of the class group, and generating set thereof, induces an isogeny graph on the orbit of the variety for this subgroup. We compute (under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis) some bounds on the norms of prime ideals generating it, such that the associated graph has good expansion properties. We use these graphs, together with a recent algorithm of Dudeanu, Jetchev and Robert …
We improve upon the recent keystone result of Dasgupta-Kakde on the $\Bbb Z[G(H/F)]^-$-Fitting ideals of certain Selmer modules $Sel_S^T(H)^-$ associated to an abelian, CM extension $H/F$ of a totally real number field $F$ and use this to compute the $\Bbb Z_p[[G(H_\infty/F)]]^-$-Fitting ideal of the Iwasawa module analogues $Sel_S^T(H_\infty)_p^-$ of these Selmer modules, where $H_\infty$ is the cyclotomic $\Bbb Z_p$-extension of $H$, for an odd prime $p$. Our main Iwasawa theoretic result states that the $\Bbb Z_p[[G(H_\infty/F]]^-$-module $Sel_S^T(H_\infty)_p^-$ is of projective dimension $…
Building on Bosca's method, we extend to tame ray class groups the results on capitulation of ideals of a number field by composition with abelian extensions of a subfield first studied by Gras. More precisely, for every extension of number fields K/k, where at least one infinite place splits completely, and every squarefree divisor m of K, we prove that there exist infinitely many abelian extensions F/k such that the ray class group mod m of K capitulates in KF. As a consequence we generalize to tame ray class groups the results of Kurihara on triviality of class groups for maximal abelian pr…
