Fix a relative quadratic extension E/F of totally real number rields and let G denote the Galois group of order 2. Let S be a finite set of primes of F containing the infinite primes and all those which ramify in E, let S_E denote the primes of E and let O_E^S denote the ring of S_E-integers of E. Assume the truth of the 2-part of the Birch-Tate conjecture relating the order of the tame kernel K_2(O_E^S) to the value of the Dedekind zeta function of E at s=-1, and assume the same for F as well. We then prove that the Fitting ideal of K_2(O_E^S) as a Z[G]-module is equal to a generalized Stickelberger ideal. Equality after tensoring with Z[1/2][G] holds unconditionally.
Let $K/F$ be a quadratic tamely ramified extension of a non-Archimedean local field $F$ of characteristic zero. In this paper, we give an explicit formula for Langlands' lambda function $λ_{K/F}$.
There has been recent progress on computing the 4-rank of the tame kernel $K_2(\mathcal{O}_F)$ for $F$ a quadratic number field. For certain quadratic number fields, this progress has led to "density results'' concerning the 4-rank of tame kernels. These results were first mentioned in \cite{CH} and proven in \cite{RO}. In this paper, we consider some additional quadratic number fields and obtain further density results of 4-ranks of tame kernels. Additionally, we give tables which might indicate densities in some generality.
Fix a Galois extension E/F of totally real number fields such that the Galois group G has exponent 2. Let S be a finite set of primes of F containing the infinite primes and all those which ramify in E, let S_E denote the primes of E lying above those in S, and let O_E^S denote the ring of S_E-integers of E. We then compare the Fitting ideal of K_2(O_E^S) as a Z[G]-module with a higher Stickelberger ideal. The two extend to the same ideal in the maximal order of Q[G], and hence in Z[1/2][G]. Results in Z[G] are obtained under the assumption of the Birch-Tate conjecture, especially for biquadra…
Suppose that $EE$ is a totally real number field which is the composite of all of its subfields $E$ that are relative quadratic extensions of a base field $F$. For each such $E$ with ring of integers $Ø_E$, assume the truth of the Birch-Tate conjecture (which is almost fully established) relating the order of the tame kernel $K_2(Ø_E)$ to the value of the Dedekind zeta function of $E$ at $s=-1$, and assume the same for $F$ as well. Excluding a certain rare situation, we prove the annihilation of $K_2(\Oc_EE)$ by a generalized Stickelberger element in the group ring of the Galois group of $EE/F…
Tate first proposed a method to determine $K_2\mathcal{O}_F,$ the tame kernel of $F,$ and gave the concrete computations for some special quadratic fields with small discriminant. After that, many examples for quadratic fields with larger discriminants are given, and similar works also have been done for cubic fields and for some special quartic fields with discriminants not large. In the present paper, we investigate the case of more general imaginary cyclic quartic field $F=\mathbb{Q}\Big(\sqrt{-(D+B\sqrt{D})}\Big)$ with class number one and large discriminants. The key problem is how to dec…
For a prime number p, we denote by K the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of a number field k. For a finite set S of prime numbers, we consider the S-ramified Iwasawa module which is the Galois group of the maximal abelian pro-p-extension of K unramified outside S. This paper treats the case where S does not contain p and k is the rational number field or an imaginary quadratic field. In this case, we prove the explicit formulae for the free ranks of the S-ramified Iwasawa modules as abelian pro-p groups, by using Brumer's p-adic version of Baker's theorem on the linear independence of logarithms of a…
Conner and Hurrelbrink established a method of determining the structure of the 2-Sylow subgroup of the tame kernel $K_2(\mathcal{O})$ for certain quadratic number fields. Specifically, the 4-rank for these fields was characterized in terms of positive definite binary quadratic forms. Numerical calculations led to questions concerning possible density results of the 4-rank of tame kernels. In this paper, we succeed in giving affirmative answers to these questions.
For certain real quadratic number fields, we prove density results concerning 4-ranks of tame kernels. We also discuss a relationship between 4-ranks of tame kernels and 4-class ranks of narrow ideal class groups. Additionally, we give a product formula for a local Hilbert symbol.
Let k be a number field. For an odd prime p and an integer i>1, the i-th étale wild kernel is contained in the second cohomology group of o'_k with coefficients in Zp(i), where o'_k is the ring of p-integers of k. Using Iwasawa theory, we give conditions for this inclusion to split. In particular we relate this splitting problem to the triviality of two invariants, namely the asymptotic kernels of the Galois descent and codescent for class groups along the cyclotomic tower of k. We illustrate our results in both split and non-split cases for quadratic number fields.
Let $K$ be an algebraic number field with ring of integers $\Cal{O}_{K}$, $p>2$ be a rational prime and $G$ be the cyclic group of order $p $. Let $Λ$ denote the order $\Cal{O}_{K}[G].$ Let $Cl(Λ)$ denote the locally free class group of $Λ$ and $D(Λ)$ the kernel group, the subgroup of $Cl(Λ)$ consisting of classes that become trivial upon extension of scalars to the maximal order. If $p$ is unramified in $K$, then $D(Λ) = T(Λ)$, where $T(Λ)$ is the Swan subgroup of $Cl(Λ).$ This yields upper and lower bounds for $D(Λ)$. Let $R(Λ)$ denote the subgroup of $Cl(Λ)$ consisting of those classes real…
In our previous work, by using Kolyvagin derivatives of elliptic units, we constructed ideals C_i of the Iwasawa algebra, and proved that the ideals C_i become "upper bounds" of the higher Fitting ideals of the one and two variable p-adic unramified Iwasawa module X over an abelian extension field K_0 of an imaginary quadratic field K. In this article, by using "non-arithmetic" specialization arguments, we prove that the ideals C_i also become "lower bounds" of the higher Fitting ideals of X. In particular, we show that the ideals C_i determine the pseudo-isomorphism class of X. Note that in t…
We study equivariant Iwasawa theory for two-variable abelian extensions of an imaginary quadratic field. One of the main goals of this paper is to describe the Fitting ideals of Iwasawa modules using $p$-adic $L$-functions. We also provide an application to Selmer groups of elliptic curves with complex multiplication.
Let L/K be a 2-birational CM-extension of a totally real 2-rational number field. We characterize in terms of tame ramification totally real 2-extensions K'/K such that the compositum L'= LK' is still 2-birational. In case the 2-extensions K'/K is linearly disjoint from the cyclotomic Z2-extension Kc/K, we prove that K'/K is at most quadratic. In the other hand we construct infinite towers of such 2-extensions.
It follows from generalities of quadratic forms that the spinor class of the integral trace of a number field determines the signature and the discriminant of the field. In this paper we define a family of number fields, that contains among others all odd degree Galois tame number fields, for which the converse is true. In other words, for a number field $K$ in such family we prove that the spinor class of the integral trace carries no more information about $K$ than the determinant and the signature do.
The modern theory of class field towers has its origins in the study of the p-class field tower over a quadratic imaginary number field, so it is fitting that this problem be the first in the discipline to be nearing a solution. We survey the state of the subject and present a new cohomological condition for a quadratic imaginary number field to have an infinite p-class field tower (for p odd). Under an additional hypothesis, we refine this to a necessary and sufficient condition and describe an algorithm for evaluating this condition for a given quadratic imaginary number field.
The theme of this work is the study of the Nekovář-Selmer group H^1_f(K,T) attached to a twisted Hida family T of Galois representations and a quadratic number field K. The results that we obtain have the following shape: if a twisted L-function of a suitable modular form in the Hida family has order of vanishing r at most 1 at the central critical point then the rank of H^1_f(K,T) as a module over a certain local Hida-Hecke algebra is equal to r. Under the above assumption, we also show that infinitely many twisted L-functions of modular forms in the Hida family have the same order of vanishi…
Let $E/F$ be a quadratic extension of non archimedean local fields of odd residual characteristic. We prove a conjecture of Prasad and Takloo-Bighash, in the case of cuspidal representations of depth zero of $\mathrm{GL}(2m,F)$. This conjecture characterizes distinction for the pair $(\mathrm{GL}(2m,F),\mathrm{GL}(m,E))$ with respect to a character $μ\circ \mathrm{det}$ of $\mathrm{GL}(m,E)$, in terms of certain conditions on Langlands paremeters, including an epsilon value. We also compute the multiplicity of the involved equivariant linear forms when $E/F$ is unramified, and also when $μ$ is…
We improve upon the recent keystone result of Dasgupta-Kakde on the $\Bbb Z[G(H/F)]^-$-Fitting ideals of certain Selmer modules $Sel_S^T(H)^-$ associated to an abelian, CM extension $H/F$ of a totally real number field $F$ and use this to compute the $\Bbb Z_p[[G(H_\infty/F)]]^-$-Fitting ideal of the Iwasawa module analogues $Sel_S^T(H_\infty)_p^-$ of these Selmer modules, where $H_\infty$ is the cyclotomic $\Bbb Z_p$-extension of $H$, for an odd prime $p$. Our main Iwasawa theoretic result states that the $\Bbb Z_p[[G(H_\infty/F]]^-$-module $Sel_S^T(H_\infty)_p^-$ is of projective dimension $…
