We first review the result that the noncommutative principal chiral model has an infinite tower of conserved currents, and discuss the special case of the noncommutative CP^1 model in some detail. Next, we focus our attention to a submodel of the CP^1 model in the noncommutative spacetime A_θ(R^2+1). By extending a generalized zero curvature representation to A_θ(R^2+1) we discuss its integrability and construct its infinitely many conserved currents. Supersymmetric principal chiral model with and without the WZW term and a supersymmetric extension of the CP^1 submodel in noncommutative spacetime (i.e in superspaces A_θ(R^1+1|2), A_θ(R^2+1|2)) are also examined in detail and their infinitely many conserved currents are given in a systematic manner. Finally, we discuss the solutions of the aforementioned submodels with or without supersymmetry.
Some properties of a non-commutative version of the generalized massive Thirring theory (NCGMT) are studied. We develop explicit calculations for the affine Lie algebra $gl(3)$ case. The NCGMT model is written in terms of Dirac type fields corresponding to the Moyal product extension of the ordinary multi-field massive Thirring model. We discuss the Lagrangian formulation, its zero-curvature representation and integrability property of certain submodels.
The Moyal momentum algebra is, once again, used to discuss some important aspects of NC integrable models and 2d conformal field theories. Among the results presented, we setup algebraic structures and makes useful convention notations leading to extract non trivial properties of the Moyal momentum algebra. We study also the Lax pair building mechanism for particular examples namely, the noncommutative KdV and Burgers systems. We show in a crucial step that these two systems are mapped to each others through a crucial mapping. This makes a strong constraint on the NC Burgers system which corre…
The conditions under which a general two-dimensional non-linear sigma model is classically integrable are given. These requirements are found by demanding that the equations of motion of the theory are expressible as a zero curvature relation. Some new integrable two-dimensional sigma models are then presented.
This is a write-up of lectures on integrable sigma-models, which covers the following topics: (1) Homogeneous spaces, (2) Classical integrability of sigma-models in two dimensions, (3) Topological terms, (4) Background-field method and beta-function, (5) S-matrix bootstrap in the O(N) model, (6) Supersymmetric cosets and strings on AdS(d)xX.
The classical integrability the O(N) nonlinear sigma model on a half-line is examined, and the existence of an infinity of conserved charges in involution is established for the free boundary condition. For the case N=3 other possible boundary conditions are considered briefly.
We construct a closed form of the action of the supersymmetric $CP^N$ sigma model on noncommutative superspace in four dimensions. We show that this model has $\mathcal{N}={1/2}$ supersymmetry and that the transformation law is not modified. The supersymmetric $CP^N$ sigma model on noncommutative superspace in two dimensions is obtained by dimensional reducing the model in four dimensions.
We show that the equivalence of nonlinear sigma and $CP^{1}$ models which is valid on the commutative space is broken on the noncommutative space. This conclusion is arrived at through investigation of new BPS solitons that do not exist in the commutative limit.
We consider the ordinary and noncommutative Dirac-Born-Infeld theories within the open string sigma-model. First, we propose a renormalization scheme, hybrid point splitting regularization, that leads directly to the Seiberg-Witten description including their two-form. We also show how such a form appears within the standard renormalization scheme just by some freedom in changing variables. Second, we propose a Wilson factor which has the noncommutative gauge invariance on the classical level and then compute the sigma-model partition function within one of the known renormalization scheme tha…
We study the relationship of soliton solutions for electron system with those of the sigma model on the noncommutative space, working directly in the operator formalism. We find that some soliton solutions of the sigma model are also the solitons of the electron system and are classified by the same topological numbers.
We study the superspace formulation of the noncommutative nonlinear supersymmetric O(N) invariant sigma-model in 2+1 dimensions. We prove that the model is renormalizable to all orders of 1/N and explicitly verify that the model is asymptotically free.
We discuss the ultra-violet properties of bosonic and supersymmetric noncommutative non-linear sigma-models in two dimensions, both with and without a Wess-Zumino-Witten term.
We construct integrability preserving boundary conditions for Green-Schwarz sigma-models on semi-symmetric spaces. The boundary conditions are expressed as gluing conditions of the flat-connection, using an involutive metric preserving automorphism. We show that the boundary conditions preserve half of the space-time supersymmetry and an infinite set of conserved charges. We find integrable D-brane configurations for AdS_5 x S^5 and AdS_4 x CP^3 backgrounds.
We investigate quantum corrections in two-dimensional CP^{N-1} supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model on noncommutative superspace. We show that this model is renormalizable, the N=2 SUSY sector is not affected by the C-deformation and that the non(anti)commutativity parameter C receives infinite renormalization at one-loop order. And it is the renormalizability of the model at one-loop order.
This review is devoted to the classical integrability of the AdS5xS5 superstring theory. It starts with a reminder of the corresponding action as a coset model. The symmetries of this action are then reviewed. The classical integrability is then considered from the lagrangian and hamiltonian points of view. The second part of this review deals with the gauge fixing of this theory. Finally, some aspects of the pure spinor formulation are also briefly reviewed.
Recently, a gauged linear sigma model was proposed by Berkovits and Vafa which can be used to describe the AdS_5xS^5 superstring at finite and zero radius. In this paper we show that the model is classically integrable by constructing its first non-local conserved charge and a superspace Lax "quartet". Quantum conservation of the non-local charge follows easily from superspace rules.
We review the derivation of a noncommutative version of the nonlinear sigma model on $\CPn$ and it's soliton solutions for finite $θ$ emphasizing the similarities it bears to the GMS scalar field theory. It is also shown that unlike the scalar theory, some care needs to be taken in defining the topological charge of BPS solitons of the theory due to nonvanishing surface terms in the energy functional. Finally it is shown that, like its commutative analogue, the noncommutative $\CPn$-model also exhibits a non-BPS sector. Unlike the commutative case however, there are some surprises in the nonco…
Noncommutative U(1) gauge theory in 4-dimensions is shown to be equivalent in some scaling limit to an ordinary non-linear sigma model in 2-dimensions . The model in this regime is solvable and the corresponding exact beta function is found. We also show that classical U(n) gauge theory on {R}^{d-2}{\times}{R}^2_θ can be approximated by a sequence of ordinary (d-2)-dimensional Georgi-Glashow models with gauge groups U(n(L+1)) where L+1 is the matrix size of the regularized noncommutative plane {R}^2_θ.
In the noncommutative (Moyal) plane, we relate exact U(1) sigma-model solitons to generic scalar-field solitons for an infinitely stiff potential. The static k-lump moduli space C^k/S_k features a natural K"ahler metric induced from an embedding Grassmannian. The moduli-space dynamics is blind against adding a WZW-like term to the sigma-model action and thus also applies to the integrable U(1) Ward model. For the latter's two-soliton motion we compare the exact field configurations with their supposed moduli-space approximations. Surprisingly, the two do not match, which questions the adiabati…
Non-local conserved charges in two-dimensional sigma models with target spaces $SO(2n)/SO(n){\times}SO(n)$ and $Sp(2n)/Sp(n){\times}Sp(n)$ are shown to survive quantization, unspoiled by anomalies; these theories are therefore integrable at the quantum level. Local, higher-spin, conserved charges are also shown to survive quantization in the $SO(2n)/SO(n){\times}SO(n)$ models.
We show that the noncommutativity of space-time destroys the renormalizability of the 1/N expansion of the O(N) Gross-Neveu model. A similar statement holds for the noncommutative nonlinear sigma model. However, we show that, up to the subleading order in 1/N expansion, the noncommutative supersymmetric O(N) nonlinear sigma model becomes renormalizable in D=3. We also show that dynamical mass generation is restored and there is no catastrophic UV/IR mixing. Unlike the commutative case, we find that the Lagrange multiplier fields, which enforce the supersymmetric constraints, are also renormali…
We introduce and study conformal field theories specified by $W-$algebras commuting with certain set of screening charges. These CFT's possess perturbations which define integrable QFT's. We establish that these QFT's have local and non-local Integrals of Motion and admit the perturbation theory in the weak coupling region. We construct factorized scattering theory which is consistent with non-local Integrals of Motion and perturbation theory. In the strong coupling limit the $S-$matrix of this QFT tends to the scattering matrix of the $O(N)$ sigma model. The perturbation theory, Bethe anzatz …
In this paper we study the noncommutative extension of a modified U(n) sigma model in 2+1 dimensions. Using the method of dressing transformations, an iterative approach for the construction of solutions from a given seed solution, we demonstrate the construction of multi-soliton and soliton-antisoliton configurations for general n. As illustrative examples we discuss U(3) solitons and consider the head-on collision of a U(2) soliton and an antisoliton explicitly, which will result in a 90^{\text{o}} angle scattering. Further we discuss the head-on collision of one U(2) soliton with two antiso…
Noncommutative multi-solitons are investigated in Euclidean two-dimensional U(n) and Grassmannian sigma models, using the auxiliary Fock-space formalism. Their construction and moduli spaces are reviewed in some detail, unifying abelian and nonabelian configurations. The analysis of linear perturbations around these backgrounds reveals an unstable mode for the U(n) models but shows stability for the Grassmannian case. For multi-solitons which are diagonal in the Fock-space basis we explicitly evaluate the spectrum of the Hessian and identify all zero modes. It is very suggestive but remains to…
A method is introduced for constructing lattice discretizations of large classes of integrable quantum field theories. The method proceeds in two steps: The quantum algebraic structure underlying the integrability of the model is determined from the algebra of the interaction terms in the light-cone representation. The representation theory of the relevant quantum algebra is then used to construct the basic ingredients of the quantum inverse scattering method, the lattice Lax matrices and R-matrices. This method is illustrated with four examples: The Sinh-Gordon model, the affine sl(3) Toda mo…
We construct topological Wess-Zumino term for supercoset sigma-models on various AdS(3) backgrounds. For appropriately chosen set of parameters, the sigma-model remains integrable when the Wess-Zumino term is added to the action. Moreover, the conditions for integrability, kappa-symmetry and conformal invariance are equivalent to each other.
In this paper we continue the program, initiated in Ref. hep-th/0112246, to investigate an integrable noncommutative version of the sine-Gordon model. We discuss the origin of the extra constraint which the field function has to satisfy in order to guarantee classical integrability. We show that the system of constraint plus dynamical equation of motion can be obtained by a suitable reduction of a noncommutative version of 4d self-dual Yang-Mills theory. The field equations can be derived from an action which is the sum of two WZNW actions with cosine potentials corresponding to a complexified…
This short note is devoted to the study of the Hamiltonian formalism and the integrability of the bosonic model introduced in [hep-th/0612079]. We calculate Poisson bracket of spatial components of Lax connection and we argue that its structure implies classical integrability of the theory.
We study sigma-models on noncommutative spaces, notably on noncommutative tori. We construct instanton solutions carrying a nontrivial topological charge q and satisfying a Belavin-Polyakov bound. The moduli space of these instantons is conjectured to consists of an ordinary torus endowed with a complex structure times a projective space $CP^{q-1}$.
It is shown how derived brackets naturally arise in sigma-models via Poisson- or antibracket, generalizing a recent observation by Alekseev and Strobl. On the way to a precise formulation of this relation, an explicit coordinate expression for the derived bracket is obtained. The generalized Nijenhuis tensor of generalized complex geometry is shown to coincide up to a de-Rham closed term with the derived bracket of the structure with itself, and a new coordinate expression for this tensor is presented. The insight is applied to two known two-dimensional sigma models in a background with genera…
A master equation expressing the classical integrability of two-dimensional non-linear sigma models is found. The geometrical properties of this equation are outlined. In particular, a closer connection between integrability and T-duality transformations is emphasised. Finally, a whole new class of integrable non-linear sigma models is found and all their corresponding Lax pairs depend on a spectral parameter.
These lectures deal mainly with solitons in three-dimensional Moyal-deformed sigma models. The topics are: static and moving (multi-)solitons of the (integrable) Ward sigma model, with space-space and time-space noncommutativity, their scattering, moduli space dynamics, stability and dimensional reduction, including an integrable deformation of the sine-Gordon system.
We probe warped BTZ $ \times S^3 $ geometry with various string solitons and explore the classical integrability criteria of the associated phase space configurations using Kovacic's algorithm. We consider consistent truncation of the parent sigma model into one dimension and obtain the corresponding normal variational equations (NVE). Two specific examples have been considered where the sigma model is reduced over the subspace of the full target space geometry. In both examples, NVEs are found to possess the Liouvillian form of solutions which ensures the classical integrability of the associ…
Exact massive S-matrices for two dimensional sigma models on symmetric spaces SU(2N)/Sp(N) and Sp(2P)/Sp(P)*Sp(P) are conjectured. They are checked by comparison of perturbative and non perturbative TBA calculations of free energy in a strong external field. We find the mass spectrum of the models and calculate their exact mass gap.
We derive the gravity duals of noncommutative gauge theories from the Yang-Baxter sigma model description of the AdS_5xS^5 superstring with classical r-matrices. The corresponding classical r-matrices are 1) solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation (CYBE), 2) skew-symmetric, 3) nilpotent and 4) abelian. Hence these should be called abelian Jordanian deformations. As a result, the gravity duals are shown to be integrable deformations of AdS_5xS^5. Then, abelian twists of AdS_5 are also investigated. These results provide a support for the gravity/CYBE correspondence proposed in arXiv:140…
We examine noncommutative linear sigma models with U(N) global symmetry groups at the one-loop quantum level, and contrast the results with our previous study of the noncommutative O(N) linear sigma models where we have shown that Nambu-Goldstone symmetry realization is inconsistent with continuum renormalization. Specifically we find no violation of Goldstone's theorem at one-loop for the U(N) models with the quartic term ordering consistent with possible noncommutative gauging of the model. The difference is due to terms involving noncommutative commutator interactions, which vanish in the c…
We begin to study a sigma-model in which both the space-time manifold and the two-dimensional string world-sheet are made noncommutative. The most precise results apply to the case where both the space-time manifold and the two-dimensional string world-sheet are replaced by noncommutative tori. In this situation, we are able to determine when maps between such noncommutative tori exist, to derive the Euler-Lagrange equations, to classify many of the critical points of the Lagrangian, and to study the associated partition function.
We demonstrate the construction of solitons for a time-space Moyal-deformed integrable U(n) sigma model (the Ward model) in 2+1 dimensions. These solitons cannot travel parallel to the noncommutative spatial direction. For the U(1) case, the rank-one single-soliton configuration is constructed explicitly and is singular in the commutative limit. The projection to 1+1 dimensions reduces it to a noncommutative instanton-like configuration. The latter is governed by a new integrable equation, which describes a Moyal-deformed sigma model with a particular Euclidean metric and a magnetic field.
The bi-Yang-Baxter sigma-model is a certain two-parameter deformation of the principal chiral model on a real Lie group G for which the left and right G-symmetries of the latter are both replaced by Poisson-Lie symmetries. It was introduced by C. Klimcik who also recently showed it admits a Lax pair, thereby proving it is integrable at the Lagrangian level. By working in the Hamiltonian formalism and starting from an equivalent description of the model as a two-parameter deformation of the coset sigma-model on G x G / G_diag, we show that it also admits a Lax matrix whose Poisson bracket is of…
Poisson sigma models are a very rich class of two-dimensional theories that includes, in particular, all 2D dilaton gravities. By using the Hamiltonian reduction method, we show that a Poisson sigma model (with a sufficiently well-behaving Poisson tensor) on a finite cylinder is equivalent to a noncommutative quantum mechanics for the boundary data.
We consider a class of 2d $σ$-models on products of group spaces that provide new examples of a close connection between integrability and stability under the RG flow. We first study the integrable $G \times G$ model derived from the affine Gaudin construction (for which the 1-loop $β$-functions were found in arXiv:2010.07879) and show that its condition of integrability is preserved also by the 2-loop RG flow. We then investigate the RG flow in the gauged $G \times G /H$ model, in particular the integrable $T^{1,1}$ model found in arXiv:2010.05573. We also construct a new class of integrable …
We use the notion of the gauge/string duality and discuss the Liouvillian (non) integrability criteria for string sigma models in the context of recently proposed Arutyunov-Bassi-Lacroix (ABL) model [JHEP \textbf{03} (2021), 062]. Our analysis complements those previous results due to numerical analysis as well as Lax pair formulation. We consider a winding string ansatz for the deformed torus $T^{\qty(λ_{1},λ_{2},λ)}_{k}$ which can be interpreted as a system of coupled pendulums. Our analysis reveals the Liouvillian nonintegrablity of the associated sigma model. We also obtain the \emph{gener…
In this paper the interaction of extended waves in a noncommutative modified 2+1 dimensional U(2) sigma model are studied. Using the dressing method, we construct an explicit two-wave solution of the noncommutative field equation. The scattering of these waves and large time factorization are discussed.
We show that the construction of vortex solitons of the noncommutative Abelian-Higgs model can be extended to a critically coupled gauged linear sigma model with Fayet-Illiopolous D-terms. Like its commutative counterpart, this fuzzy linear sigma model has a rich spectrum of BPS solutions. We offer an explicit construction of the degree$-k$ static semilocal vortex and study in some detail the infinite coupling limit in which it descends to a degree$-k$ $\C\Pk^{N}$ instanton. This relation between the fuzzy vortex and noncommutative lump is used to suggest an interpretation of the noncommutativ…
We show that SU(2)_L Yangian and q-deformed SU(2)_R symmetries are realized in a two-dimensional sigma model defined on a three-dimensional squashed sphere. These symmetries enable us to develop the two descriptions to describe its classical dynamics, 1) rational and 2) trigonometric descriptions. The former 1) is based on the SU(2)_L symmetry and the latter 2) comes from the broken SU(2)_R symmetry. Each of the Lax pairs constructed in both ways leads to the same equations of motion. The two descriptions are related one another through a non-local map.
We consider two dimensional non linear sigma models on few symmetric superspaces, which are supergroup manifolds of coset type. For those spaces where one loop beta function vanishes, two loop beta function is calculated and is shown to be zero. Vanishing of beta function in all orders of perturbation theory is shown for the principal chiral models on group supermanifolds with zero Killing form. Sigma models on symmetric (super) spaces on supergroup manifold $G/H$ are known to be classically integrable. We investigate a possibility to extend an argument of absence of quantum anomalies in non l…
Interactions of noncommutative solitons in a modified U(n) sigma model in 2+1 dimensions can be analyzed exactly. Using an extension of the dressing method, we construct explicit time-dependent solutions of its noncommutative field equation by iteratively solving linear equations. The approach is illustrated by presenting bound states and right-angle scattering configurations for two noncommutative solitons.
We discuss an interplay between T-duality and integrability for certain classical non-linear sigma models. In particular, we consider strings on the AdS_5 x S^5 background and perform T-duality along the four isometry directions of AdS_5 in the Poincare patch. The T-dual of the AdS_5 sigma model is again a sigma model on an AdS_5 space. This classical T-duality relation was used in the recently uncovered connection between light-like Wilson loops and MHV gluon scattering amplitudes in the strong coupling limit of the AdS/CFT duality. We show that the explicit coordinate dependence along the T-…
Motivated by the search for solvable string theories, we consider the problem of classifying the integrable bosonic 2d $σ$-models. We include non-conformal $σ$-models, which have historically been a good arena for discovering integrable models that were later generalized to Weyl-invariant ones. General $σ$-models feature a quantum RG flow, given by a 'generalized Ricci flow' of the target-space geometry. This thesis is based on the conjecture that integrable $σ$-models are renormalizable, or stable under the RG flow. It is widely understood that classically integrable theories are stable at th…
The O(3) non-linear sigma model is investigated using multi Hamilton-Jacobi formalism. The integrability conditions are investigated and the results are in agreement with those obtained by Dirac's method. By choosing an adequate extension of phase space we describe the transformed system by a set of three Hamilton-Jacobi equations and calculate the corresponding action.
The integrability of N=(2,2) dilaton supergravity in two dimensions is studied by the use of the graded Poisson Sigma model approach. Though important differences compared to the purely bosonic models are found, the general analytic solutions are obtained. The latter include minimally gauged models as well as an ungauged version. BPS solutions are an especially interesting subclass.
We compactify M(atrix) theory on Riemann surfaces Sigma with genus g>1. Following [1], we construct a projective unitary representation of pi_1(Sigma) realized on L^2(H), with H the upper half-plane. As a first step we introduce a suitably gauged sl_2(R) algebra. Then a uniquely determined gauge connection provides the central extension which is a 2-cocycle of the 2nd Hochschild cohomology group. Our construction is the double-scaling limit N\to\infty, k\to-\infty of the representation considered in the Narasimhan-Seshadri theorem, which represents the higher-genus analog of 't Hooft's clock a…
We discuss classical integrable structure of two-dimensional sigma models which have three-dimensional Schrodinger spacetimes as target spaces. The Schrodinger spacetimes are regarded as null-like deformations of AdS_3. The original AdS_3 isometry SL(2,R)_L x SL(2,R)_R is broken to SL(2,R)_L x U(1)_R due to the deformation. According to this symmetry, there are two descriptions to describe the classical dynamics of the system, 1) the SL(2,R)_L description and 2) the enhanced U(1)_R description. In the former 1), we show that the Yangian symmetry is realized by improving the SL(2,R)_L Noether c…
Lie algebra expansion is a technique to generate new Lie algebras from a given one. In this paper, we apply the method of Lie algebra expansion to superstring $σ$-models with a $\mathbb{Z}_4$ coset target space. By applying the Lie algebra expansion to the isometry algebra, we obtain different $σ$-models, where the number of dynamical fields can change. We reproduce and extend in a systematic way actions of some known string regimes (flat space, BMN and non-relativistic in AdS$_5 \times$S$^5$). We define a criterion for the algebra truncation such that the equations of motion of the expanded a…
In this paper we study the integrability of a family of models with U(1)xSU(N) symmetry. They admit fermionic and bosonic formulations related through bosonization and subsequent T-duality. The fermionic theory is just the CP^(N-1) sigma model coupled to a self-interacting massless fermion, while the bosonic one defines a one-parameter deformation of the O(2N) sigma model. For N=2 the latter model is equivalent to the integrable deformation of the O(4) sigma model discovered by Wiegmann. At higher values of N we find that integrability is more sporadic and requires a fine-tuning of the paramet…
We demonstrate the existence of an infinite number of local commuting charges for classical solutions of the string sigma model on AdS_5 x S^5 associated with a certain circular three-spin solution spinning with large angular momenta in three orthogonal directions on the five-sphere. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we find agreement to one-loop with the tower of conserved higher charges in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills theory associated with the dual composite single-trace operator in the highest weight representation (J_1,J_2,J_2) of SO(6). The agreement can be explained by the presence of int…
We discuss the quasiclassical geometry and integrable systems related to the gauge/string duality. The analysis of quasiclassical solutions to the Bethe anzatz equations arising in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence is performed, compare to stationary phase equations for the matrix integrals. We demonstrate how the underlying geometry is related to the integrable sigma-models of dual string theory, and investigate some details of this correspondence.
The existence of higher-spin quantum conserved currents in two dimensions guarantees quantum integrability. We revisit the question of whether classically-conserved local higher-spin currents in two-dimensional sigma models survive quantization. We define an integrability index $\mathcal{I}(J)$ for each spin $J$, with the property that $\mathcal{I}(J)$ is a lower bound on the number of quantum conserved currents of spin $J$. In particular, a positive value for the index establishes the existence of quantum conserved currents. For a general coset model, with or without extra discrete symmetries…
We investigate boundary conditions for the nonlinear sigma model on the compact symmetric space $G/H$, where $H \subset G$ is the subgroup fixed by an involution $σ$ of $G$. The Poisson brackets and the classical local conserved charges necessary for integrability are preserved by boundary conditions in correspondence with involutions which commute with $σ$. Applied to $SO(3)/SO(2)$, the nonlinear sigma model on $S^2$, these yield the great circles as boundary submanifolds. Applied to $G \times G/G$, they reproduce known results for the principal chiral model.
