A master equation expressing the classical integrability of two-dimensional non-linear sigma models is found. The geometrical properties of this equation are outlined. In particular, a closer connection between integrability and T-duality transformations is emphasised. Finally, a whole new class of integrable non-linear sigma models is found and all their corresponding Lax pairs depend on a spectral parameter.
We study two-dimensional classically integrable field theory with independent boundary condition on each end, and obtain three possible generating functions for integrals of motion when this model is an ultralocal one. Classically integrable boundary condition can be found in solving boundary $K_{\pm}$ equations. In quantum case, we also find that unitarity condition of quantum $R$- matrix is sufficient to construct commutative quantities with boundary, and its reflection equations are obtained.
Boundary conditions compatible with classical integrability are studied both directly, using an approach based on the explicit construction of conserved quantities, and indirectly by first developing a generalisation of the Lax pair idea. The latter approach is closer to the spirit of earlier work by Sklyanin and yields a complete set of conjectures for permissible boundary conditions for any affine Toda field theory.
Some ideas and remarks are presented concerning a possible Lagrangian approach to the study of internal boundary conditions relating integrable fields at the junction of two domains. The main example given in the article concerns single real scalar fields in each domain and it is found that these may be free, of Liouville type, or of sinh-Gordon type.
We investigate boundary conditions for the nonlinear sigma model on the compact symmetric space $G/H$, where $H \subset G$ is the subgroup fixed by an involution $σ$ of $G$. The Poisson brackets and the classical local conserved charges necessary for integrability are preserved by boundary conditions in correspondence with involutions which commute with $σ$. Applied to $SO(3)/SO(2)$, the nonlinear sigma model on $S^2$, these yield the great circles as boundary submanifolds. Applied to $G \times G/G$, they reproduce known results for the principal chiral model.
We consider classical and quantum integrable sigma models and their relations with the solutions of renormalization group equations. We say that an integrable sigma model possesses the "nice" duality property if the dual quantum field theory has the weak coupling region. As an example, we consider the deformed $CP(n-1)$ sigma model with additional quantum degrees of freedom. We formulate the dual integrable field theory and use perturbed conformal field theory, perturbation theory, $S$-matrix, Bethe Ansatz and renormalization group methods to show that this field theory has the "nice" duality …
Local commuting charges in sigma-models with classical Lie groups as target manifolds are shown to be related to the conserved quantities appearing in the Drinfeld-Sokolov (generalized mKdV) hierarchies. Conversely, the Drinfeld-Sokolov construction can be used to deduce the existence of commuting charges in these and in wider classes of sigma-models, including those whose target manifolds are exceptional groups or symmetric spaces. This establishes a direct link between commuting quantities in integrable sigma-models and in affine Toda field theories.
Non linear sigma models on Riemannian symmetric spaces constitute the most general class of classical non-linear sigma models which are known to be integrable. Using the current algebra structure of these models their canonical structure is analysed and it is shown that their non ultralocal fundamental Poisson bracket relation is governed by a field dependent non antisymmetric r-matrix obeying a dynamical Yang Baxter equation. Contribution presented at the XIX ICGTMP Salamanca June 92
A procedure is developed for constructing deformations of integrable sigma-models which are themselves classically integrable. When applied to the principal chiral model on any compact Lie group F, one recovers the Yang-Baxter sigma-model introduced a few years ago by C. Klimcik. In the case of the symmetric space sigma-model on F/G we obtain a new one-parameter family of integrable sigma-models. The actions of these models correspond to a deformation of the target space geometry and include a torsion term. An interesting feature of the construction is the q-deformation of the symmetry corresp…
The finite volume problem of O(2N) sigma models with integrable diagonal boundaries on a finite interval is investigated. The double row transfer matrix is diagonalized by Algebraic Bethe Ansatz. The boundary Bethe Yang equations for the particle rapidities and the accompanying Bethe Ansatz equations are derived.
A multi-parameter integrable deformation of the principal chiral model is presented. The Yang-Baxter and bi-Yang-Baxter sigma-models, the principal chiral model plus a Wess-Zumino term and the TsT transformation of the principal chiral model are all recovered when the appropriate deformation parameters vanish. When the Lie group is SU(2), we show that this four-parameter integrable deformation of the SU(2) principal chiral model corresponds to the Lukyanov model.
A systematic procedure for constructing classical integrable field theories with arbitrarily many free parameters is outlined. It is based on the recent interpretation of integrable field theories as realisations of affine Gaudin models. In this language, one can associate integrable field theories with affine Gaudin models having arbitrarily many sites. We present the result of applying this general procedure to couple together an arbitrary number of principal chiral model fields on the same Lie group, each with a Wess-Zumino term.
We find new integrable boundary conditions, depending on a free parameter $g$, for the O(N) nonlinear $σ$ model, which are of nondiagonal type, that is, particles can change their ``flavor'' through scattering off the boundary. These boundary conditions are derived from a microscopic boundary lagrangian, which is used to establish their integrability, and exhibit integrable flows between diagonal boundary conditions investigated earlier. We solve the boundary Yang-Baxter equation, connect these solutions to the boundary conditions, and examine the corresponding integrable flows.
We propose an integrable extension of nonlinear sigma model on the target space of Hermitian symmetric space (HSS). Starting from a discussion of soliton solutions of O(3) model and an integrally extended version of it, we construct general theory defined on arbitrary HSS by using the coadjoint orbit method. It is based on the exploitation of a covariantized canonical structure on HSS. This term results in an additional first-order derivative term in the equation of motion, which accommodates the zero curvature representation. Infinite conservation laws of nonlocal charges in this model are de…
Recently, a variety of deformed $T^{1,1}$ manifolds, with which 2D non-linear sigma models (NLSMs) are classically integrable, have been presented by Arutyunov, Bassi and Lacroix (ABL) [arXiv:2010.05573]. We refer to the NLSMs with the integrable deformed $T^{1,1}$ as the ABL model for brevity. Motivated by this progress, we consider deriving the ABL model from a 4D Chern-Simons (CS) theory with a meromorphic one-form with four double poles and six simple zeros. We specify boundary conditions in the CS theory that give rise to the ABL model and derive the sigma-model background with target-spa…
We construct integrability-preserving deformations of the integrable $σ$-model coupling together $N$ copies of the Principal Chiral Model. These deformed theories are obtained using the formalism of affine Gaudin models, by applying various combinations of Yang-Baxter and $λ$-deformations to the different copies of the undeformed model. We describe these models both in the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian formulation and give explicit expressions of their action and Lax pair. In particular, we recover through this construction various integrable $λ$-deformed models previously introduced in the liter…
By using the general framework of affine Gaudin models, we construct a new class of integrable sigma models. They are defined on a coset of the direct product of $N$ copies of a Lie group over some diagonal subgroup and they depend on $3N-2$ free parameters. For $N=1$ the corresponding model coincides with the well-known symmetric space sigma model. Starting from the Hamiltonian formulation, we derive the Lagrangian for the $N=2$ case and show that it admits a remarkably simple form in terms of the classical $\mathcal{R}$-matrix underlying the integrability of these models. We conjecture that …
The conditions under which a general two-dimensional non-linear sigma model is classically integrable are given. These requirements are found by demanding that the equations of motion of the theory are expressible as a zero curvature relation. Some new integrable two-dimensional sigma models are then presented.
Integrable $σ$-models, such as the principal chiral model, ${\mathbb{Z}}_T$-coset models for $T \in {\mathbb{Z}}_{\geq 2}$ and their various integrable deformations, are examples of non-ultralocal integrable field theories described by (cyclotomic) $r/s$-systems with twist function. In this general setting, and when the Lie algebra ${\mathfrak{g}}$ underlying the $r/s$-system is of classical type, we construct an infinite algebra of local conserved charges in involution, extending the approach of Evans, Hassan, MacKay and Mountain developed for the principal chiral model and symmetric space $σ…
Classically integrable $σ$-models are known to be solutions of the 1-loop RG equations, or "Ricci flow", with only a few couplings running. In some of the simplest examples of integrable deformations we find that in order to preserve this property at 2 (and higher) loops the classical $σ$-model should be corrected by quantum counterterms. The pattern is similar to that of effective $σ$-models associated to gauged WZW theories. We consider in detail the examples of the $η$-deformation of $S^2$ ("sausage model") and $H^2$, as well as the closely related $λ$-deformation of the $SO(1,2)/SO(2)$ cos…
Lie algebra valued equations translating the integrability of a general two-dimensional Wess-Zumino-Witten model are given. We found simple solutions to these equations and identified three types of new integrable non-linear sigma models. One of them is a modified Yang-Baxter sigma model supplemented with a Wess-Zumino-Witten term.
An $S$-matrix is proposed for the two dimensional O(3) $σ$-model with a dynamical $θ$-term (axion model). Exploiting an Abelian T-duality transformation connecting the axion model to an integrable SU(2)$\times$U(1) symmetric principal $σ$-model, strong evidence is presented for the correctness of the proposed $S$-matrix by comparing the perturbatively calculated free energies with the ones based on the Thermodynamical Bethe Ansatz. This T-duality transformation also leads to a new Lax-pair for both models. The quantum non-integrability of the O(3) $σ$-model with a {\sl constant} $θ$-term, in c…
We consider the problem of calculating the Casimir energies in the winding sectors of Fateev's SS-model, which is an integrable two-parameter deformation of the O(4) non-linear sigma model in two dimensions. This problem lies beyond the scope of all traditional methods of integrable quantum field theory including the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and non-linear integral equations. Here we propose a solution based on a remarkable correspondence between classical and quantum integrable systems and express the winding energies in terms of certain solutions of the classical sinh-Gordon equation.
We present a simple, new method for the 1-loop renormalization of integrable $σ$-models. By treating equations of motion and Bianchi identities on an equal footing, we derive 'universal' formulae for the 1-loop on-shell divergences, generalizing case-by-case computations in the literature. Given a choice of poles for the classical Lax connection, the divergences take a theory-independent form in terms of the Lax currents (the residues of the poles), assuming a 'completeness' condition on the zero-curvature equations. We compute these divergences for a large class of theories with simple poles …
In the context of integrable field theory with boundary, the integrable non-linear sigma models in two dimensions, for example, the $O(N)$, the principal chiral, the ${\rm CP}^{N-1}$ and the complex Grassmannian sigma models are discussed on a half plane. In contrast to the well known cases of sine-Gordon, non-linear Schrödinger and affine Toda field theories, these non-linear sigma models in two dimensions are not classically integrable if restricted on a half plane. It is shown that the infinite set of non-local charges characterising the integrability on the whole plane is not conserved for…
We consider two integrable deformations of 2d sigma models on supercosets associated with AdS_n x S^n. The first, the "eta-deformation" (based on the Yang-Baxter sigma model), is a one-parameter generalization of the standard superstring action on AdS_n x S^n, while the second, the "lambda-deformation" (based on the deformed gauged WZW model), is a generalization of the non-abelian T-dual of the AdS_n x S^n superstring. We show that the eta-deformed model may be obtained from the lambda-deformed one by a special scaling limit and analytic continuation in coordinates combined with a particular …
We explain how to obtain new classical integrable field theories by assembling two affine Gaudin models into a single one. We show that the resulting affine Gaudin model depends on a parameter $γ$ in such a way that the limit $γ\to 0$ corresponds to the decoupling limit. Simple conditions ensuring Lorentz invariance are also presented. A first application of this method for $σ$-models leads to the action announced in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 122 (2019) 041601] and which couples an arbitrary number $N$ of principal chiral model fields on the same Lie group, each with a Wess-Zumino term. The affine Gau…
We construct a gauged linear sigma-model representation and develop a 1/N-expansion for flag manifold sigma-models previously proposed by the author. Classically there exists a zero-curvature representation for the equations of motion of these models, which leads in particular to the existence of a conserved non-local charge. We show that at the quantum level this charge is no longer conserved and calculate explicitly the anomaly in its conservation law.
In these notes we study the duality between sigma-models and Toda QFT's. We claim that $\mathfrak{gl}(n|n)$ affine Toda field theory behaves in the strong coupling limit as $η-$deformed $\mathbb{CP}(n-1)$ sigma-model plus a free field.
It is well-known that sigma-models with symmetric target spaces are classically integrable. At the example of the model with target space the flag manifold U(3)/U(1)^3 -- a non-symmetric space -- we show that the introduction of torsion allows to cast the equations of motion in the form of a zero-curvature condition for a one-parametric family of connections, which can be a sign of integrability of the theory. We also elaborate on geometric aspects of the proposed model.
Recently, a gauged linear sigma model was proposed by Berkovits and Vafa which can be used to describe the AdS_5xS^5 superstring at finite and zero radius. In this paper we show that the model is classically integrable by constructing its first non-local conserved charge and a superspace Lax "quartet". Quantum conservation of the non-local charge follows easily from superspace rules.
Many Ramond-Ramond backgrounds which arise in the AdS/CFT correspondence are described by integrable sigma-models. The equations of motion for classical spinning strings in these backgrounds are exactly solvable by finite-gap integration techniques. We review the finite-gap integral equations and algebraic curves for coset sigma-models, and then apply the results to the AdS(d+1) backgrounds with d=4,3,2,1.
Sigma models arise frequently in particle physics and condensed-matter physics as low-energy effective theories. In this paper I compute the exact free energy at any temperature in two hierarchies of integrable sigma models in two dimensions. These theories, the SU(N)/SO(N) and O(2P)/O(P) x O(P) models, are asymptotically free and exhibit charge fractionalization. When the instanton coupling theta=pi, they flow to the SU(N)_1 and O(2P)_1 conformal field theories, respectively. I also generalize the free energy computation to massive and massless perturbations of the coset conformal field theor…
It is known that Yang-Baxter sigma models provide a systematic way to study integrable deformations of both principal chiral models and symmetric coset sigma models. In the original proposal and its subsequent development, the deformations have been characterized by classical $r$-matrices satisfying the modified classical Yang-Baxter equation (mCYBE). In this article, we propose the Yang-Baxter sigma models based on the classical Yang-Baxter equations (CYBE) rather than the mCYBE. This generalization enables us to utilize various kinds of solutions of the CYBE to classify integrable deformatio…
We search for integrable boundary conditions and their geometric interpretation as $D$-branes, in models constructed as generalized $λ$-deformations of products of group- and coset-spaces. Using the sigma-model approach, we find that all the conformal brane geometries known in the literature for a product of WZW models solve the corresponding boundary conditions, thus persisting as integrable branes along the RG flows of our sigma-models. They consist of the well known $G$-conjugacy classes, twisted $G$-conjugacy classes by a permutation automorphism (permutation branes) and generalized permut…
We study 2D non-linear sigma models on a group manifold with a special form of the metric. We address the question of integrability for this special class of sigma models. We derive two algebraic conditions for the metric on the group manifold. Each solution of these conditions defines an integrable model. Although the algebraic system is overdetermined in general, we give two examples of solutions. We find the Lax field for these models and calculate their Poisson brackets. We also obtain the renormalization group (RG) equations, to first order, for the generic model. We solve the RG equation…

We introduce and study conformal field theories specified by $W-$algebras commuting with certain set of screening charges. These CFT's possess perturbations which define integrable QFT's. We establish that these QFT's have local and non-local Integrals of Motion and admit the perturbation theory in the weak coupling region. We construct factorized scattering theory which is consistent with non-local Integrals of Motion and perturbation theory. In the strong coupling limit the $S-$matrix of this QFT tends to the scattering matrix of the $O(N)$ sigma model. The perturbation theory, Bethe anzatz …
A review is given on the recently proposed two dimensional axion model (O(3) sigma-model with a dynamical Hopf-term) and the T-duality relating it to the SU(2)xU(1) symmetric anisotropic sigma-model. Strong evidence is presented for the correctness of the proposed S-matrix for both models comparing perturbative and Thermodynamical Bethe Ansatz calculations for different types of free energies. This also provides a very stringent test of the validity of T-duality transformation at the quantum level. The quantum non-integrability of the O(3) sigma-model with a non-dynamical Hopf-term, in contrad…
A general class of deformations of integrable sigma-models with symmetric space F/G target-spaces are found. These deformations involve defining the non-abelian T dual of the sigma-model and then replacing the coupling of the Lagrange multiplier imposing flatness with a gauged F/F WZW model. The original sigma-model is obtained in the limit of large level. The resulting deformed theories are shown to preserve both integrability and the equations-of-motion, but involve a deformation of the symplectic structure. It is shown that this deformed symplectic structure involves a linear combination of…
Motivated by the search for new integrable string models, we study the properties of massless tree-level S-matrices for 2d sigma models expanded near the trivial vacuum. We find that, in contrast to the standard massive case, there is no apparent link between massless S-matrices and integrability: in well-known integrable models the tree-level massless S-matrix fails to factorize and exhibits particle production. Such tree-level particle production is found in several classically integrable models: the principal chiral model, its classically equivalent "pseudo-dual" model, its non-abelian dual…
In this paper we outline the construction of semiclassical eigenfunctions of integrable models in terms of the semiclassical path integral for the Poisson sigma model with the target space being the phase space of the integrable system. The semiclassical path integral is defined as a formal power series with coefficients being Feynman diagrams. We also argue that in a similar way one can obtain irreducible semiclassical representations of Kontsevich's star product.
Integrable sigma model with generalized $\mathcal{F}$ structure, Yang-Baxter sigma model with generalized complex structure and multi-Yang-Baxter sigma model
The canonical structure of classical non-linear sigma models on Riemannian symmetric spaces, which constitute the most general class of classical non-linear sigma models known to be integrable, is shown to be governed by a fundamental Poisson bracket relation that fits into the $r$-$s$-matrix formalism for non-ultralocal integrable models first discussed by Maillet. The matrices $r$ and $s$ are computed explicitly and, being field dependent, satisfy fundamental Poisson bracket relations of their own, which can be expressed in terms of a new numerical matrix~$c$. It is proposed that all these P…
A new class of two dimensional integrable field theories, based on the mathematical notion of Poisson manifolds, and containing gravity-Yang-Mills systems as well as the G/G gauged Wess-Zumino Witten-model, are presented. The local solutions of the classical equations of motions as well as a scheme for the quantization in a Hamiltonian formulation is presented for the general model. Partial results of a calculation of the partition function on arbitrary Riemann surfaces via path integral techniques are given. Multi-particle form factors of local operators in integrable models in two dimensions seem to have the property that they factorize when one subset of the particles in the external states are boosted by a large rapidity with respect to the others. This remarkable property, which goes under the name of form factor clustering, was first observed by Smirnov in the O(3) non-linear sigma-model and has subsequently found useful applications in integrable models without internal symmetry structure. In this paper we conjecture the nature of form factor clustering for the general O(n) sigma-model and m…
We consider a class of 2d $σ$-models on products of group spaces that provide new examples of a close connection between integrability and stability under the RG flow. We first study the integrable $G \times G$ model derived from the affine Gaudin construction (for which the 1-loop $β$-functions were found in arXiv:2010.07879) and show that its condition of integrability is preserved also by the 2-loop RG flow. We then investigate the RG flow in the gauged $G \times G /H$ model, in particular the integrable $T^{1,1}$ model found in arXiv:2010.05573. We also construct a new class of integrable …
Basing upon experience from performing double-dimensional reduction of the D=11 supermembrane on AdS_4 x S^7 background to Type IIA superstring on AdS_4 x CP^3 we introduce Kaluza-Klein (partial) kappa-symmetry gauge as a vanishing condition of the contribution to the D=11 supervielbein components tangent to D=10 space-time proportional to the differential of the coordinate parametrizing compact 11-th space-time dimension, that is identified with the supermembrane world-volume compact dimension. For AdS_4 x S^7 supermembrane Kaluza-Klein gauge removes half Grassmann coordinates associated with…
We study regularization scheme dependence of $β$-function for sigma models with two-dimensional target space. Working within four-loop approximation, we conjecture the scheme in which the $β$-function retains only two tensor structures up to certain terms containing $ζ_3$. Using this scheme, we provide explicit solutions to RG flow equation corresponding to Yang-Baxter- and $λ$-deformed $SU(2)/U(1)$ sigma models, for which these terms disappear.
Motivated by the search for solvable string theories, we consider the problem of classifying the integrable bosonic 2d $σ$-models. We include non-conformal $σ$-models, which have historically been a good arena for discovering integrable models that were later generalized to Weyl-invariant ones. General $σ$-models feature a quantum RG flow, given by a 'generalized Ricci flow' of the target-space geometry. This thesis is based on the conjecture that integrable $σ$-models are renormalizable, or stable under the RG flow. It is widely understood that classically integrable theories are stable at th…
The possibility of the application of the free field representation developed by Lukyanov for massive integrable models is investigated in the context of the O(3) sigma model. We use the bootstrap fusion procedure to construct a free field representation for the O(3) Zamolodchikov- Faddeev algebra and to write down a representation for the solutions of the form-factor equations which is similar to the ones obtained previously for the sine-Gordon and SU(2) Thirring models. We discuss also the possibility of developing further this representation for the O(3) model and comment on the extension t…
We define a two-parameter family of integrable deformations of the principal chiral model on an arbitrary compact group. The Yang-Baxter sigma-model and the principal chiral model with a Wess-Zumino term both correspond to limits in which one of the two parameters vanishes.
