Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0 and C a connected nonsingular projective curve over k with genus g>1. Let (C,G) be a "big action", i.e. a pair (C,G) where G is a p-subgroup of the k-automorphism group of C such that |G|/g > 2p / p-1. We first study finiteness results on the values taken by the quotient |G|/g^2 when (C,G) runs over the big actions satisfying |G|/g^2 >M, for a given positive real M>0. Then, we exhibit a classification and a parametrization of such big actions when M=4/ (p^2-1)^2.
We prove that the Brauer group of the moduli stack of elliptic curves $\mathscr{M}_{1,1,k}$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $2$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/(2)$. We also compute the Brauer group of $\mathscr{M}_{1,1,k}$ where $k$ is a finite field of characteristic $2$.
A projective manifold $M$ is algebraically hyperbolic if there exists a positive constant $A$ such that the degree of any curve of genus $g$ on $M$ is bounded from above by $A(g-1)$. A classical result is that Kobayashi hyperbolicity implies algebraic hyperbolicity. It is known that Kobayashi hyperbolic manifolds have finite automorphism groups. Here we prove that, more generally, algebraically hyperbolic projective manifolds have finite automorphism groups.
In this note we generalize Nori's definition of the fundamental group scheme from a rational point to an arbitrary base point so that when we take $X$ to be a field $k$ and the point to be $k\subseteq \bar{k}$ we still get a non trivial group scheme which is similar to the absolute Galois group ${\rm Gal}(\bar{k}/k)$. Then we try to understand the group scheme at various levels.
Over an algebraically closed field, various finiteness results are known regarding the automorphism group of a K3 surface and the action of the automorphisms on the Picard lattice. We formulate and prove versions of these results over arbitrary base fields, and give examples illustrating how behaviour can differ from the algebraically closed case.
Let X be a separated scheme of finite type over an algebraically closed field k and let m be a natural number. By an explicit geometric construction using torsors we construct a pairing between the first mod m Suslin homology and the first mod m tame etale cohomology of X. We show that the induced homomorphism from the mod m Suslin homology to the abelianized tame fundamental group of X mod m is surjective. It is an isomorphism of finite abelian groups if (m, char(k)) = 1, and for general m if resolution of singularities holds over k.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over a perfect field $k$ acting on an algebraic variety $X$ and let $P$ be a minimal parabolic subgroup of $G$. For $k$-spherical $G$-varieties we prove finiteness result for $P$-orbits that contain $k$-points. This is a consequence of an equality on $P$-complexities of $X$ and of any $P$-invariant $k$-dense subvariety in $X$, which generalizes a corresponding result of E.B.Vinberg in the case of algebraically closed field $k$. Also we introduce an action of the restricted Weyl group $W$ on the set of $k$-dense $P$-invariant closed subvarieties of $X$ of …
André and Maulik--Poonen proved that for any smooth proper family $X\to B$ of varieties over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$, there is a closed fiber whose Néron-Severi group has the same rank as that of the Néron-Severi group of the geometric generic fiber. We prove the analogous statement over algebraically closed fields of characteristic $p>0$ which are not isomorphic to $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$. Furthermore, we prove that for any algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ and smooth proper family $X\to B$ of $k$-varieties, there exists a dense open subvarie…
Let $C$ be a smooth irreducible affine curve $C$ over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic and let $π_1(C)$ be its fundamental group. We study various embedding problems for $π_1(C)$ and its subgroups.
We classify the orbits of elements of the tensor product spaces ${\mathbb{F}}^2\otimes {\mathbb{F}}^3 \otimes {\mathbb{F}}^3$ for all finite; real; and algebraically closed fields under the action of two natural groups. The result can also be interpreted as the classification of the orbits in the $17$-dimensional projective space of the Segre variety product of a projective line and two projective planes. This extends the classification of the orbits in the $7$-dimensional projective space of the Segre variety product of three projective lines [M. Lavrauw and J. Sheekey: Orbits of the stabilis…
For a power $q$ of a prime $p$, the Artin-Schreier-Mumford curve $ASM(q)$ of genus $g=(q-1)^2$ is the nonsingular model $\mathcal{X}$ of the irreducible plane curve with affine equation $(X^q+X)(Y^q+Y)=c,\, c\neq 0,$ defined over a field $\mathbb{K}$ of characteristic $p$. The Artin-Schreier-Mumford curves are known from the study of algebraic curves defined over a non-Archimedean valuated field since for $|c|<1$ they are curves with a large solvable automorphism group of order $2(q-1)q^2 =2\sqrt{g}(\sqrt{g}+1)^2$, far away from the Hurwitz bound $84(g-1)$ valid in zero characteristic. In this…
This thesis is devoted to the study of geometric properties of affine algebraic varieties endowed with an action of an algebraic torus. It comes from three preprints which correspond to the indicated points (1), (2), (3). Let $X$ be an affine variety equipped with an action of the algebraic torus $\mathbb{T}$. The complexity of the $\mathbb{T}$-action on $X$ is the codimension of the general $\mathbb{T}$-orbits. Under the assumption of normality and when the ground field is algebraically closed of characteristic 0, the variety $X$ admits a combinatorial description in terms of convex geometry.…
The cohomological dimension of a field is the largest degree with non-vanishing Galois cohomology. Serre's "Conjecture II" predicts that for every perfect field of cohomological dimension $2$, every torsor over the field for a semisimple, simply connected algebraic group is trivial. A field is perfect and "pseudo algebraically closed" (PAC) if every geometrically irreducible curve over the field has a rational point. These have cohomological dimension $1$. Every transcendence degree $1$ extension of such a field has cohomological degree $2$. We prove Serre's "Conjecture II" for such fields of …
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and $\mathbb{G}_a$ be the additive group of $\mathbb{K}$. We say that an irreducible algebraic variety $X$ of dimension $n$ over the field $\mathbb{K}$ admits an additive action if there is a regular action of the group $\mathbb{G}_a^n = \mathbb{G}_a \times \ldots \times \mathbb{G}_a$ ($n$ times) on $X$ with an open orbit. In this paper we find all projective toric hypersurfaces admitting additive action.
In this paper, we develop the main step in the global theory for the mod-$\ell$ analogue of Bogomolov's program in birational anabelian geometry for higher-dimensional function fields over algebraically closed fields. More precisely, we show how to reconstruct a function field $K$ of transcendence degree $\geq 5$ over an algebraically closed field, up-to inseparable extensions, from the mod-$\ell$ abelian-by-central Galois group of $K$ endowed with the collection of mod-$\ell$ rational quotients.
We give a presentation of the plane Cremona group over an algebraically closed field with respect to the generators given by the Theorem of Noether and Castelnuovo. This presentation is particularly simple and can be used for explicit calculations.
Using Galois descent tools, we extend the Altmann-Hausen presentation of normal affine algebraic varieties endowed with an effective torus action over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero to the case where the ground field is an arbitrary field of characteristic zero. In this context, the acting torus may have non-trivial torsors and we need additional data to encode such varieties. Finally, we focus on affine varieties endowed with a two-dimensional torus action and we provide a method for determining when a torsor is trivial, in which case the Altmann-Hausen presentation simp…
This paper is dedicated to the problem of infinite transitivity for algebraically generated automorphism groups of the affine plane. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition of infinite transitivity for a large family of subgroups generated by one-parameter additive groups.
We analyze the structure of a large class of connected algebraic rings over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic using Greenberg's perfectization functor. We then give applications to rigidity problems for representations of Chevalley groups, recovering, in particular, a rigidity theorem of Seitz.
We prove that a differential field K is algebraically closed and Picard-Vessiot closed if and only if the differential Galois cohomology group H^1_\partial(K,G) is trivial for any linear differential algebraic group G over K. We give an application to the parameterized Picard-Vessiot theory.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over an algebraically closed field. We show that $A$ is the automorphism group scheme of some smooth projective variety if and only if $A$ has only finitely many automorphisms as an algebraic group. This generalizes a result of Lombardo and Maffei for complex abelian varieties.
Let G be a connected reductive group defined over an algebraically closed ground field of characteristic p, let B be a Borel subgroup of G, and let X be a G-variety. The first named author has shown that for p = 0 there is a natural action of the Weyl group W on the (finite) set of closed B-invariant subvarieties of X that are of maximal modularity, and conjectured that the same construction yields a W-action whenever p is different from 2. In the present paper we prove this conjecture.
Consider an algebraically closed field k and the Cremona group of all birational transformations of the projective plane over k. We characterize infinite order elements of this group having a non-zero power generating a proper normal subgroup of the Cremona group.
Let $G_k$ be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $\neq 2$. Let $K_k \subset G_k$ be a quasi-split symmetric subgroup of $G_k$ with respect to an involution $θ_k$ of $G_k$. The classification of such involutions is independent of the characteristic of $k$ (provided not $2$). We first construct a closed subgroup scheme $\mathbf{G}^\imath$ of the Chevalley group scheme $\mathbf{G}$ over $\mathbb{Z}$. The pair $(\mathbf{G}, \mathbf{G}^\imath)$ parameterizes symmetric pairs of the given type over any algebraically closed field of characteri…
