A number of characteristics of integrable nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE's) for classical fields are reviewed, such as Backlund transformations, Lax pairs, and infinite sequences of conservation laws. An algebraic approach to the symmetry problem of PDE's is described, suitable for PDE's the solutions of which are non-scalar fields (e.g., are in the form of matrices). A method is proposed which, in certain cases, may "unify" the symmetry and integrability properties of a nonlinear PDE. Application is made to the self-dual Yang-Mills equation and the Ernst equation of General Relativity.
An eighth-order equation in (3+1)-dimension is studied for its integrability. Its symmetry group is shown to be infinite-dimensional and is checked for Virasoro like structure. The equation is shown not to have Painlev$\acute{\rm e}$ property. One and two-dimensional classifications of infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra is also given.
We present an integrability test for discrete equations on the square lattice, which is based on the existence of a generalized symmetry. We apply this test to a number of equations obtained in different recent papers. As a result we prove the integrability of 7 equations which differ essentially from the $Q_V$ equation introduced by Viallet and thus from the Adler-Bobenko-Suris list of equations therein contained.
The integrability of the classical and quantum rational Calogero-Moser systems is verified explicitly via the Lax pair method for the case $n=3$. We provide an extensive survey of reflection groups and root systems. The Olshanetsky-Perelomov operators are constructed for a general root system via Dunkl operators, associated to root systems. The integrability of the quantum rational Calogero-Moser system is discussed via the Olshanetsky-Perelomov operators, which provide a set of commuting integrals of motion. The classical analogues of both the Dunkl and the Olshanetsky-Perelomov operators are…
The relationship between classical and quantum three one-mode systems interacting in a non-linear way is described. We investigate the integrability of these systems by using the reduction procedure. The reduced coherent states for the quantum system are constructed. We find the explicit formulas for the reproducing measure for these states. Examples of some applications of the obtained results in non-linear quantum optics are presented.
In this contribution, we discuss three situations in which complete integrability of a three dimensional classical system and its quantum version can be achieved under some conditions. The former is a system with axial symmetry. In the second, we discuss a three dimensional system without spatial symmetry which admits separation of variables if we use ellipsoidal coordinates. In both cases, and as a condition for integrability, certain conditions arise in the integrals of motion. Finally, we study integrability in the three dimensional sphere and a particular case associated with the Kepler pr…
In this paper we analyze the classical XXZ spin chain with reflecting boundaries. We exhibit a system of log-canonical coordinates on the phase space generalizing Sklyanin's separation of variables for the periodic XXZ chain, and use these coordinates to construct action-angle variables for the system. We also integrate the flows of the reflection Hamiltonians explicitly in terms of Riemann theta functions. Central to our analysis is the algebraic integrability of the model.
We consider the Burgers-type system studied by Foursov, w_t &=& w_{xx} + 8 w w_x + (2-4α)z z_x, z_t &=& (1-2α)z_{xx} - 4αz w_x + (4-8α)w z_x - (4+8α)w^2 z + (-2+4α)z^3, (*) for which no recursion operator or master symmetry was known so far, and prove that the system (*) admits infinitely many local generalized symmetries that are constructed using a nonlocal {\em two-term} recursion relation rather than from a recursion operator.
We show that the concept of complete symmetry group introduced by Krause (J. Math. Phys.35 (1994) 5734-5748) in the context of the Newtonian Kepler problem has wider applicability, extending to the relativistic context of the Einstein equations describing spherically symmetric bodies with certain conformal Killing symmetries. We also provide a simple demonstration of the nonuniqueness of the complete symmetry group.
The Rayleigh-Plesset equation (RPE) is a nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE) of second order that governs the dynamics of a spherical bubble and plays an essential role in interpreting many real-world phenomena involving the presence of bubbles in engineering and medical fields. In the present paper, we present a relatively comprehensive analysis of the analytical solutions of the RPE. The integrability of the Rayleigh-Plesset equation is investigated and discussed using the Painlevé test. Lie symmetry groups are employed subsequentially to obtain several exact solutions to the simp…
Quadratic systems generated using Yang-Baxter equations are integrable in a sense, but we display a deterioration in the possession of the Painlevé property as the number of equations in each `integrable system' increases. Certain intermediate systems are constructed and also tested for the Painlevé property. The Lie symmetries are also computed for completeness.
We discuss the interrelations between symmetry of an Ito stochastic differential equations (or systems thereof) and its integrability, extending in party results by R. Kozlov [J. Phys. A ${\bf 43}$ (2010) \& ${\bf 44}$ (2011)]. Together with integrability, we also consider the relations between symmetries and reducibility of a system of SDEs to a lower dimensional one. We consider both "deterministic" symmetries and "random" ones, in the sense introduced recently by Gaeta and Spadaro [J.Math. Phys. ${\bf 58}$ (2017)].
In this letter we establish Yangian symmetry of planar N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory. We prove that the classical equations of motion of the model close onto themselves under the action of Yangian generators. Moreover we propose an off-shell extension of our statement which is equivalent to the invariance of the action and prove that it is exactly satisfied. We assert that our relationship serves as a criterion for integrability in planar gauge theories by explicitly checking that it applies to integrable ABJM theory but not to non-integrable N=1 super-Yang-Mills theory.
We extend the integrability analysis for scalar evolution equations of type $$u_t=u_m+f(u,u_1,...,u_{m-1})$$ from the case that the right hand side is a $λ$-homogeneous formal power series to the case that it is a nonhomogeneous formal power series. It is proved that the existence of one nontrivial symmetry implies the existence of infinitely many, more precisely, the orders of the infinite integrable hierarchy must be one of the following cases: $\mathbb{Z}_++1$, $2\mathbb{Z}_++1$, $6\mathbb{Z}_+\pm1$, or $6\mathbb{Z}_++1$. Moreover, if the nonlinear part of the equation is a polynomial of or…
We consider the integrability of a two-parameter deformation of the Wess-Zumino-Witten model, previously introduced in relation with Poisson-Lie T-duality. The resulting family of Poisson-Lie dual models is shown to be integrable by using the Maillet r/s formalism.
We investigate the reduction process of a k-symplectic field theory whose Lagrangian is invariant under a symmetry group. We give explicit coordinate expressions of the resulting reduced partial differential equations, the so-called Lagrange-Poincare field equations. We discuss two issues about reconstructing a solution from a given solution of the reduced equations. The first one is an interpretation of the integrability conditions, in terms of the curvatures of some connections. The second includes the introduction of the concept of a k-connection to provide a reconstruction method. We show …
The different natures of approximate symmetries and their corresponding first integrals/invariants are delineated in the contexts of both Lie symmetries of ordinary differential equations and Noether symmetries of the Action Integral. Particular note is taken of the effect of taking higher orders of the perturbation parameter. Approximate symmetries of approximate first integrals/invariants and the problems of calculating them using the Lie method are considered.
In this paper we study the integrability of a family of models with U(1)xSU(N) symmetry. They admit fermionic and bosonic formulations related through bosonization and subsequent T-duality. The fermionic theory is just the CP^(N-1) sigma model coupled to a self-interacting massless fermion, while the bosonic one defines a one-parameter deformation of the O(2N) sigma model. For N=2 the latter model is equivalent to the integrable deformation of the O(4) sigma model discovered by Wiegmann. At higher values of N we find that integrability is more sporadic and requires a fine-tuning of the paramet…
We give analytic expression for the three-point function of three large classical non-BPS operators N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory at weak coupling. We restrict ourselves to operators belonging to an su(2) sector of the theory. In order to carry out the calculation we derive, by unveiling a hidden factorization property, the thermodynamical limit of Slavnov's determinant.
The coalgebra approach to the construction of classical integrable systems from Poisson coalgebras is reviewed, and the essential role played by symplectic realizations in this framework is emphasized. Many examples of Hamiltonians with either undeformed or q-deformed coalgebra symmetry are given, and their Liouville superintegrability is discussed. Among them, (quasi-maximally) superintegrable systems on N-dimensional curved spaces of nonconstant curvature are analysed in detail. Further generalizations of the coalgebra approach that make use of comodule and loop algebras are presented. The g…
The paper is devoted to the questions connected with the investigation of the S.P. Novikov problem of the description of the geometry of level lines of quasiperiodic functions on a plane with different numbers of quasiperiods. We consider here the history of the question, the current state of research in this field, and a number of applications of this problem to various physical problems. The main attention is paid to the applications of the results obtained in the field under consideration to the theory of transport phenomena in electron systems.
The explicit integrability of second order ordinary differential equations invariant under time-translation and rescaling is investigated. Quadratic systems generated from the linearisable version of this class of equations are analysed to determine therelationship between the Painlevé and singularity properties of the different systems. The transformation contains a parameter and for critical values, intimately related to the possession of the Painlevé Property in the parent second order equation, one finds a difference from the generic behaviour. This study is a prelude to a full discussion …
The paper intends to offer a general overview on what the concept of integrability means for a nonlinear dynamical system and how the symmetry method can be applied for approaching it. After a general part where key problems as direct and indirect symmetry method or optimal system of solutions are tackled out, in the second part of the lecture two concrete models of nonlinear dynamical systems are effectively studied in order to illustrate how the procedure is working out. The two models are the 2D Ricci flow model coming from the general relativity and the 2D convective-diffusion equation . P…
Quantum integrability of classical integrable systems given by quadratic Killing tensors on curved configuration spaces is investigated. It is proven that, using a "minimal" quantization scheme, quantum integrability is insured for a large class of classic examples.
The first part of this paper explains what super-integrability is and how it differs in the classical and quantum cases. This is illustrated with an elementary example of the resonant harmonic oscillator. For Hamiltonians in "natural form", the kinetic energy has geometric origins and, in the flat and constant curvature cases, the large isometry group plays a vital role. We explain how to use the corresponding first integrals to build separable and super-integrable systems. We also show how to use the automorphisms of the symmetry algebra to help build the Poisson relations of the correspondin…
At the classical level anyons with harmonic confinement are known to exhibit two important properties namely partial separability and pseudo-integrability. These stem from the fact that this system is locally identical to isotropic oscillator system but differs in the global topology of the phase space. We clarify the meaning of pseudo-integrability and show that it amounts to a definite reduction of the symmetry group. We elaborate on the role of the fundamental group of the phase space and pseudo-intrgrability in the context of periodic orbit theory and obtain evidence of non-exactly known e…
We formulate the necessary conditions for the maximal super-integrability of a certain family of classical potentials defined in the constant curvature two-dimensional spaces. We give examples of homogeneous potentials of degree -2 on $E^2$ as well as their equivalents on $S^2$ and $H^2$ for which these necessary conditions are also sufficient. We show explicit forms of the additional first integrals which always can be chosen polynomial with respect to the momenta and which can be of an arbitrary high degree with respect to the momenta.
We review some essential aspects of classically integrable systems. The detailed outline of the lectures consists of: 1. Introduction and motivation, with historical remarks; 2. Liouville theorem and action-angle variables, with examples (harmonic oscillator, Kepler problem); 3. Algebraic tools: Lax pairs, monodromy and transfer matrices, classical r-matrices and exchange relations, non-ultralocal Poisson brackets, with examples (non-linear Schroedinger model, principal chiral field); 4. Features of classical r-matrices: Belavin-Drinfeld theorems, analyticity properties, and lift of the classi…
The exactly solvable BCS Hamiltonian of superconductivity is considered from several viewpoints: Richardson's ansatz, conformal field theory, integrable inhomogenous vertex models and Chern-Simons theory.
We discuss classical integrable structure of two-dimensional sigma models which have three-dimensional Schrodinger spacetimes as target spaces. The Schrodinger spacetimes are regarded as null-like deformations of AdS_3. The original AdS_3 isometry SL(2,R)_L x SL(2,R)_R is broken to SL(2,R)_L x U(1)_R due to the deformation. According to this symmetry, there are two descriptions to describe the classical dynamics of the system, 1) the SL(2,R)_L description and 2) the enhanced U(1)_R description. In the former 1), we show that the Yangian symmetry is realized by improving the SL(2,R)_L Noether c…
Liouville integrability of classical Calogero-Moser models is proved for models based on any root systems, including the non-crystallographic ones. It applies to all types of elliptic potentials, i.e. untwisted and twisted together with their degenerations (hyperbolic, trigonometric and rational), except for the rational potential models confined by a harmonic force.
This contributed conference proceeding reviews some results about a system of a few identical particles with spin trapped in one-dimensional potentials and experiencing two-body interactions. The focus is on how symmetry, integrability, and solvability depend on the trap shape, two-body interaction, the number of particles, and the number of spin components. A series of comments are presented that characterize the minimal symmetries possible for a composite system constructed from interacting single particles, with special focus on the contact interaction. For five and more particles with inte…
The algebraic structure underlying the classical $r$-matrix formulation of the complex sine-Gordon model is fully elucidated. It is characterized by two matrices $a$ and $s$, components of the $r$ matrix as $r=a-s$. They obey a modified classical reflection/Yang--Baxter set of equations, further deformed by non-abelian dynamical shift terms along the dual Lie algebra $su(2)^*$. The sign shift pattern of this deformation has the signature of the twisted boundary dynamical algebra. Issues related to the quantization of this algebraic structure and the formulation of quantum complex sine-Gordon o…
A wide class of Hamiltonian systems with N degrees of freedom and endowed with, at least, (N-2) functionally independent integrals of motion in involution is constructed by making use of the two-photon Lie-Poisson coalgebra. The set of (N-2) constants of the motion is shown to be a universal one for all these Hamiltonians, irrespectively of the dependence of the latter on several arbitrary functions and N free parameters. Within this large class of quasi-integrable N-dimensional Hamiltonians, new families of completely integrable systems are identified by finding explicitly a new independent i…
We prove that all classical affine W-algebras W(g,f), where g is a simple Lie algebra and f is its non-zero nilpotent element, admit an integrable hierarchy of bi-Hamiltonian PDEs, except possibly for one nilpotent conjugacy class in G_2, one in F_4, and five in E_8.
We review here particular aspects of the connection between Laplacian growth problems and classical integrable systems. In addition, we put forth a possible relation between quantum integrable systems and Laplacian growth problems. Such a connection, if confirmed, has the potential to allow for a theoretical prediction of the fractal properties of Laplacian growth clusters, through the representation theory of conformal field theory.
The dynamics of nonlinear reaction-diffusion systems is dominated by the onset of patterns and Fisher equation is considered to be a prototype of such diffusive equations. Here we investigate the integrability properties of a generalized Fisher equation in both (1+1) and (2+1) dimensions. A Painlevé singularity structure analysis singles out a special case ($m=2$) as integrable. More interestingly, a Bäcklund transformation is shown to give rise to a linearizing transformation for the integrable case. A Lie symmetry analysis again separates out the same $m=2$ case as the integrable one and hen…
Solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation provide a systematic method to construct integrable quantum systems in an algebraic manner. A Lie algebra can be associated with any solution of the classical Yang--Baxter equation, from which commuting transfer matrices may be constructed. This procedure is reviewed, specifically for solutions without skew-symmetry. A particular solution with an exotic symmetry is identified, which is not obtained as a limiting expansion of the usual Yang--Baxter equation. This solution facilitates the construction of commuting transfer matrices which will be us…
We show that SU(2)_L Yangian and q-deformed SU(2)_R symmetries are realized in a two-dimensional sigma model defined on a three-dimensional squashed sphere. These symmetries enable us to develop the two descriptions to describe its classical dynamics, 1) rational and 2) trigonometric descriptions. The former 1) is based on the SU(2)_L symmetry and the latter 2) comes from the broken SU(2)_R symmetry. Each of the Lax pairs constructed in both ways leads to the same equations of motion. The two descriptions are related one another through a non-local map.
Basic notions regarding classical integrable systems are reviewed. An algebraic description of the classical integrable models together with the zero curvature condition description is presented. The classical r-matrix approach for discrete and continuum classical integrable models is introduced. Using this framework the associated classical integrals of motion and the corresponding Lax pair are extracted based on algebraic considerations. Our attention is restricted to classical discrete and continuum integrable systems with periodic boundary conditions. Typical examples of discrete (Toda cha…
In this paper we will explore the 2D system describing trapped ionic system in the quadrapole field with a superposition of rationally symmetric hexapole and octopole fields for meromorphic integrability. We use the Lyapunov's and Ziglin-Morales-Ruiz-Ramis's classical methods for the proofs. The monodromy group of the normal variational equation (NVE), which is a Heun equation, is studied for commutativity. Some classical and modern results from the theory of transcendental numbers are used for the research.
In the context of planar holography, integrability plays an important role for solving certain massless quantum field theories such as N=4 SYM theory. In this letter we show that integrability also features in the building blocks of massive quantum field theories. At one-loop order we prove that all massive n-gon Feynman integrals in generic spacetime dimensions are invariant under a massive Yangian symmetry. At two loops similar statements can be proven for graphs built from two n-gons. At generic loop order we conjecture that all graphs cut from regular tilings of the plane with massive prop…
It is noted that the Schrodinger equation with any self-adjoint Hamiltonian is unitary equivalent to a set of non-interacting classical harmonic oscillators and in this sense any quantum dynamics is completely integrable. Higher order integrals of motion are presented. That does not mean that we can explicitly compute the time dependence for expectation value of any quantum observable. A similar result is indicated for classical dynamical systems in terms of Koopman's approach. Explicit transformations of quantum and classical dynamics to the free evolution by using direct methods of scatterin…
We briefly review the most relevant aspects of complete integrability for classical systems and identify those aspects which should be present in a definition of quantum integrability. We show that a naive extension of classical concepts to the quantum framework would not work because all infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces are unitarily isomorphic and, as a consequence, it would not be easy to define degrees of freedom. We argue that a geometrical formulation of quantum mechanics might provide a way out.
Recent investigations have observed superdiffusion in integrable classical and quantum spin chains. An intriguing connection between these spin chains and Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class has emerged. Theoretical developments (e.g. generalized hydrodynamics) have highlighted the role of integrability as well as spin-symmetry in KPZ behaviour. However understanding their precise role on superdiffusive transport still remains a challenging task. The widely used quantum spin chain platform comes with severe numerical limitations. To circumvent this barrier, we focus on a classical int…
The relationship (resemblance and/or contrast) between quantum and classical integrability in Ruijsenaars-Schneider systems, which are one parameter deformation of Calogero-Moser systems, is addressed. Many remarkable properties of classical Calogero and Sutherland systems (based on any root system) at equilibrium are reported in a previous paper (Corrigan-Sasaki). For example, the minimum energies, frequencies of small oscillations and the eigenvalues of Lax pair matrices at equilibrium are all "integer valued". In this paper we report that similar features and results hold for the Ruijsenaar…
We derive the gravity duals of noncommutative gauge theories from the Yang-Baxter sigma model description of the AdS_5xS^5 superstring with classical r-matrices. The corresponding classical r-matrices are 1) solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation (CYBE), 2) skew-symmetric, 3) nilpotent and 4) abelian. Hence these should be called abelian Jordanian deformations. As a result, the gravity duals are shown to be integrable deformations of AdS_5xS^5. Then, abelian twists of AdS_5 are also investigated. These results provide a support for the gravity/CYBE correspondence proposed in arXiv:140…
Following our attempts to define quasi-integrability in which we related this concept to a particular symmetry of the two-soliton function we check this condition in three classes of modified Sine-Gordon models in (1+1) dimensions. We find that the numerical results seen in various scatterings of two solitons and in the time evolution of breather-like structures support our ideas about the symmetry of the field configurations and its effects on the anomalies of the conservation laws of the charges.
A $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric nonlinear Schrödinger dimer is a two-site discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation with one site losing and the other one gaining energy at the same rate. In this paper, two four-parameter families of cubic $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric dimers are constructed as gain-loss extensions of their conservative, Hamiltonian, counterparts. We prove that all these damped-driven equations define completely integrable Hamiltonian systems. The second aim of our study is to identify nonlinearities that give rise to the spontaneous $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry restoration. When the symmetry …
We compute three-point functions of single trace operators in planar N=4 SYM. We consider the limit where one of the operators is much smaller than the other two. We find a precise match between weak and strong coupling in the Frolov-Tseytlin classical limit for a very general class of classical solutions. To achieve this match we clarify the issue of back-reaction and identify precisely which three-point functions are captured by a classical computation.
We propose a new method for solution of the integrability problem for evolutionary differential-difference equations of arbitrary order. It enables us to produce necessary integrability conditions, to determine whether a given equation is integrable or not, and to advance in classification of integrable equations. In this paper we define and develop symbolic representation for the difference polynomial ring, difference operators and formal series. In order to formulate necessary integrability conditions, we introduce a novel quasi-local extension of the difference ring. It enables us to progre…

Recently, we constructed the first-principle derivation of the holographic dual of N=4 SYM in the double-scaled $γ$-deformed limit directly from the CFT side. The dual fishchain model is a novel integrable chain of particles in AdS5. It can be viewed as a discretized string and revives earlier string-bit approaches. The original derivation was restricted to the operators built out of one of two types of scalar fields. In this paper, we extend our results to the general operators having any number of scalars of both types, except for a very special case when their numbers are equal. Interesting…
For the Bakirov system, which is known to possess only one higher-order local generalized symmetry, we explicitly find a zero-curvature representation containing an essential parameter.
In these lecture notes we aim for a pedagogical introduction to both classical and quantum integrability. Starting from Liouville integrability and passing through Lax pair and r-matrix we discuss the construction of the conserved charges for classical integrable models taking as example the harmonic oscillator. The construction of these charges for 2D integrable field theories is also discussed using a Lax connection and the Sine-Gordon model as example. On the quantum side, the XXZ spin chain is used to explain the systematic construction of the conserved charges starting from a quantum R-ma…
