Recently, we constructed the first-principle derivation of the holographic dual of N=4 SYM in the double-scaled $γ$-deformed limit directly from the CFT side. The dual fishchain model is a novel integrable chain of particles in AdS5. It can be viewed as a discretized string and revives earlier string-bit approaches. The original derivation was restricted to the operators built out of one of two types of scalar fields. In this paper, we extend our results to the general operators having any number of scalars of both types, except for a very special case when their numbers are equal. Interestingly, the extended model reveals a new discrete reparametrization symmetry of the "world-sheet", preserving all integrals of motion. We use integrability to formulate a closed system of equations, which allows us to solve for the spectrum of the model in full generality, and present non-perturbative numerical results. We show that our results are in agreement with the Asymptotic Bethe Ansatz of the fishnet model up to the wrapping order at weak coupling.
Reparametrization invariance being treated as a gauge symmetry shows some specific peculiarities. We study these peculiarities both from a general point of view and on concrete examples. We consider the canonical treatment of reparametrization invariant systems in which one fixes the gauge on the classical level by means of time-dependent gauge conditions. In such an approach one can interpret different gauges as different reference frames. We discuss the relations between different gauges and the problem of gauge invariance in this case. Finally, we establish a general structure of reparametr…
The reparametrization symmetries of Witten's vertex in ordinary or vacuum string field theories can be used to extract useful information about classical solutions of the equations of motion corresponding to D-branes. It follows, that the vacuum string field theory in general has to be regularized. For the regularization recently considered by Gaiotto et al., we show that the identities we derive, are so constraining, that among all surface states they uniquely select the simplest butterfly projector discovered numerically by those authors. The reparametrization symmetries are also used to giv…
It has been noticed that for a large class of cosmological models, the gauge fixing of the time-reparametrization invariance does not completely fix the clock. Instead, the system enjoys a surprising residual Noether symmetry under a Möbius reparametrization of the proper time, which maps gauge-inequivalent solutions to the Friedman equations onto each other. In this work, we provide a unified treatment of this hidden conformal symmetry and its realization in the homogeneous and isotropic sector of the Einstein-Scalar-$Λ$ system. We consider the flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) model, the…
We demonstrate the one-to-one correspondence between reparametrization invariant effective actions for relativistic p-branes in flat target space and effective actions for transverse brane perturbations with non-linearly realized Poincaré symmetry. Starting with an action with non-linearly realized symmetry we construct the corresponding reparametrization invariant action by introducing Stückelberg fields. They combine with the transverse modes to form a Lorentz vector. The manifest Lorentz symmetry of the reparametrization invariant action follows directly from the non-linearly realized Loren…
Bäcklund-type transformations in four-dimensional space-time and an intriguing reduced zero-curvature formulation for axially symmetric membranes, with diffeomorphism-, resp. Lorentz-, symmetries reappearing after orthonormal gauge-fixing, are found.
The construction of physical models with local time-reparametrization invariance is reviewed. Negative-energy contributions to the hamiltonian are shown to be crucial for the realization of this reparametrization symmetry. The covariant formulation of the dynamics is used to develop a time and gauge invariant Hamilton-Jacobi theory. This formalism is applied to solve for the cosmology of a homogeneous universe of the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker type. After a discussion of empty universes, the FLRW theory is extended with homogeneous scalar fields generically described by a $\sg$-model …
We study the fate of reparametrization invariance of Wilson loops, also known as 'zig-zag' symmetry, under the RG flow using some simple cases as guidance. We restrict our analysis to large-$N$, strongly coupled CFTs and use the holographic dual description of a Wilson loop as a fundamental string embedded in asymptotically AdS spaces, at zero and nonzero temperature. We then introduce a cutoff in the holographic radial direction and integrate out the the section of the string closer to the AdS boundary in the spirit of holographic Wilsonian renormalization. We make explicit the map between Wi…
We show that, despite of the reparametrization symmetry of the Lagrangian describing the interaction between a scalar field and gauge vector bosons, the dynamics of the Higgs mechanism is really affected by the representation gauge chosen for the Higgs field. Actually, we find that, varying the parametrization for the two degrees of freedom of the complex scalar field, we obtain different expressions for the Higgs mass: in its turn this entails different expressions for the critical temperatures, ranging from zero to a maximum value, as well as different expressions for other basic thermodynam…
In an earlier article, we have "derived" space, as a part of the Random Dynamics project. In order to get locality we need to obtain reparametrization symmetry, or equivalently, diffeomorphism symmetry. There we sketched a procedure for how to get locality by first obtaining reparametrization symmetry, or equivalently, diffeomorphism symmetry. This is the object of the present article.
In this paper we show that the worldline reparametrization for particles with higher derivative interactions appears as a higher dimensional symmetry, which is generated by the truncated Virasoro algebra. We also argue that for generic nonlocal particle theories the fields on the worldline may be promoted to those living on a two dimensional worldsheet, and the reparametrization symmetry becomes locally the same as the conformal symmetry.
We consider D1-string in a constant R-R 3-form flux background and analyze its low energy limit. The leading order low energy theory has reparametrization symmetry and is a generalization of an earlier work by Takhtajan. We show that the dynamical evolution of the theory takes a generalized Hamiltonian form in terms of a Nambu bracket. This description is formulated in terms of reparametrization invariant quantities and requires no fixing of the reparametrization symmetry. We also show that a Nambu- Poisson (p + 2)-bracket arises naturally in the reparametrization invariant description of the …
While the achievements in the study of N=4 Super Yang-Mills through the application of integrability are impressive, the precise origins of the exact solvability remain shrouded in mystery. In this note, we propose that viewing the problem through the lens of twistor theory should help to clarify the reasons for integrability. We illustrate the power of this approach by rederiving the model's one-loop spin chain dilatation operator in the SO(6) sector.
T-duality has been shown to arise from a gauge symmetry in some string theories. However, in the case of \IIA\ compactified on a circle, it is not possible to show that this is the case. This situation is rather uncomfortable since string string duality suggests that all T-dualities should arise from a gauge symmetry. Here we show that the T-duality of \IIA\ compactified on a circle arises from the reparametrization of the supermembrane. Then we show how this reparametrization can be understood in terms of a gauge symmetry of the supermembrane, thus allowing to connect T-duality in \II\ to a g…
In this letter we establish Yangian symmetry of planar N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory. We prove that the classical equations of motion of the model close onto themselves under the action of Yangian generators. Moreover we propose an off-shell extension of our statement which is equivalent to the invariance of the action and prove that it is exactly satisfied. We assert that our relationship serves as a criterion for integrability in planar gauge theories by explicitly checking that it applies to integrable ABJM theory but not to non-integrable N=1 super-Yang-Mills theory.
In this thesis, we report on different aspects of integrability in supersymmetric gauge theories. The main tool of investigation is twistor geometry. In trying to be self-contained, we first present a brief review about the basics of twistor geometry. We then focus on the twistor description of various gauge theories in four and three space-time dimensions. These include self-dual supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theories and relatives, non-self-dual SYM theories and supersymmetric Bogomolny models. Furthermore, we present a detailed investigation of integrability of self-dual SYM theories. In …
In this paper we study the integrability of a family of models with U(1)xSU(N) symmetry. They admit fermionic and bosonic formulations related through bosonization and subsequent T-duality. The fermionic theory is just the CP^(N-1) sigma model coupled to a self-interacting massless fermion, while the bosonic one defines a one-parameter deformation of the O(2N) sigma model. For N=2 the latter model is equivalent to the integrable deformation of the O(4) sigma model discovered by Wiegmann. At higher values of N we find that integrability is more sporadic and requires a fine-tuning of the paramet…
We study two novel approaches to efficiently encoding universal constraints imposed by conformal symmetry, and describe applications to quantum chaos in higher dimensional CFTs. The first approach consists of a reformulation of the shadow operator formalism and kinematic space techniques. We observe that the shadow operator associated with the stress tensor (or other conserved currents) can be written as the descendant of a field ${\cal E}$ with negative dimension. Computations of stress tensor contributions to conformal blocks can be systematically organized in terms of the "soft mode" ${\cal…
We briefly explain some simple arguments based on pseudo Hermiticity, supersymmetry and PT-symmetry which explain the reality of the spectrum of some non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. Subsequently we employ PT-symmetry as a guiding principle to construct deformations of some integrable systems, the Calogero-Moser-Sutherland model and the Korteweg deVries equation. Some properties of these models are discussed.
At the classical level anyons with harmonic confinement are known to exhibit two important properties namely partial separability and pseudo-integrability. These stem from the fact that this system is locally identical to isotropic oscillator system but differs in the global topology of the phase space. We clarify the meaning of pseudo-integrability and show that it amounts to a definite reduction of the symmetry group. We elaborate on the role of the fundamental group of the phase space and pseudo-intrgrability in the context of periodic orbit theory and obtain evidence of non-exactly known e…
In this paper, we investigate a relation between the Givental group of rank one and the Heisenberg-Virasoro symmetry group of the KP hierarchy. We prove, that only a two-parameter family of the Givental operators can be identified with elements of the Heisenberg-Virasoro symmetry group. This family describes triple Hodge integrals satisfying the Calabi-Yau condition. Using the identification of the elements of two groups we prove that the generating function of triple Hodge integrals satisfying the Calabi-Yau condition and its $Θ$-version are tau-functions of the KP hierarchy. This generalizes…
There is a growing amount of evidence that QCD (and four-dimensional gauge theories in general) possess a hidden symmetry which does not exhibit itself as a symmetry of classical Lagrangians but is only revealed on the quantum level. In this review we consider the scale dependence of local gauge invariant operators and high-energy (Regge) behavior of scattering amplitudes to explain that the effective QCD dynamics in both cases is described by completely integrable systems that prove to be related to the celebrated Heisenberg spin chain and its generalizations.
The exactly solvable BCS Hamiltonian of superconductivity is considered from several viewpoints: Richardson's ansatz, conformal field theory, integrable inhomogenous vertex models and Chern-Simons theory.
We review the integrable systems which arise as symmetry reductions of Plebanski's heavenly equations, and their generalisations. We also show that all four-dimensional null Kahler-Einstein (or type N hyper-heavenly) metrics with symmetry can be found from solutions to a variable coefficient generalisation of the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation.
These lectures give a basic introduction to $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory and the integrability of its planar spectral problem as seen from the perspective of a recent development, namely the application of integrability techniques in the study of one-point functions in a defect version of the theory.
This paper is an exposition of the author's recent work (arXiv:1001.3382 [hep-th], arXiv:1005.5430 [cond-mat.dis-nn], arXiv:1212.4956 [quant-ph]) on modeling M-theory vacua and quantum mechanical observers in the framework of a temporally statistical description of quantum geometrodynamics, including measurement processes based on the canonical theory of quantum gravity. In this paper we deal with several fundamental issues of time: the time-less problem in canonical quantum gravity; the physical origin of state reductions; and time-reversal symmetry breaking. We first model the observers and …
We combine recent applications of the two-dimensional quantum inverse scattering method to the scattering amplitude problem in four-dimensional N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory. Integrability allows us to obtain a general, explicit method for the derivation of the Yangian invariants relevant for tree-level scattering amplitudes in the N=4 model.
A wide class of models, built of the three component unit vector field living in the (3+1) Minkowski space-time, which break explicitly global O(3) symmetry are discussed. The symmetry breaking occurs due to the so-called dielectric function multiplying a standard symmetric term. Integrability conditions are found. Moreover, for some particular forms of the Lagrangian exact toroidal solutions with any Hopf index are obtained. It is proved that such symmetry breaking influences the shape of the solitons whereas the energy as well as the Hopf index remain unchanged.
We use ideas on integrability in higher dimensions to define Lorentz invariant field theories with an infinite number of local conserved currents. The models considered have a two dimensional target space. Requiring the existence of Lagrangean and the stability of static solutions singles out a class of models which have an additional conformal symmetry. That is used to explain the existence of an ansatz leading to solutions with non trivial Hopf charges.
Aspects of the D=4, N=4 superconformal symmetry relevant to the AdS/CFT duality and integrability are reviewed. These include the Lie superalgebra psu(2,2|4), its representations, conformal transformations and correlation functions in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory as well as an illustration of the AdS5xS5 superspace on which the dual string theory is formulated.
Using a recently developed method, based on a generalization of the zero curvature representation of Zakharov and Shabat, we study the integrability structure in the Abelian Higgs model. It is shown that the model contains integrable sectors, where integrability is understood as the existence of infinitely many conserved currents. In particular, a gauge invariant description of the weak and strong integrable sectors is provided. The pertinent integrability conditions are given by a U(1) generalization of the standard strong and weak constraints for models with two dimensional target space. The…
We study a two dimensional dilaton gravity system, recently examined by Almheiri and Polchinski, which describes near extremal black holes, or more generally, nearly $AdS_2$ spacetimes. The asymptotic symmetries of $AdS_2$ are all the time reparametrizations of the boundary. These symmetries are spontaneously broken by the $AdS_2$ geometry and they are explicitly broken by the small deformation away from $AdS_2$. This pattern of spontaneous plus explicit symmetry breaking governs the gravitational backreaction of the system. It determines several gravitational properties such as the linear in …
We exploit the reparametrization symmetry of a relativistic free particle to impose a gauge condition which upon quantization implies space-time noncommutativity. We show that there is an algebraic map from this gauge back to the standard `commuting' gauge. Therefore the Poisson algebra, and the resulting quantum theory, are identical in the two gauges. The only difference is in the interpretation of space-time coordinates. The procedure is repeated for the case of a coupling with a constant electromagnetic field, where the reparametrization symmetry is preserved. For more arbitrary interactio…
We show that the quantum-algebra-invariant open spin chains associated with the affine Lie algebras $A^{(1)}_n$ for $n>1$ are integrable. The argument, which applies to a large class of other quantum-algebra-invariant chains, does not require that the corresponding $R$ matrix have crossing symmetry.
Scattering amplitudes in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills theory reveal a remarkable symmetry structure. In addition to the superconformal symmetry of the Lagrangian of the theory, the planar amplitudes exhibit a dual superconformal symmetry. The presence of this additional symmetry imposes strong restrictions on the amplitudes and is connected to a duality relating scattering amplitudes to Wilson loops defined on polygonal light-like contours. The combination of the superconformal and dual superconformal symmetries gives rise to a Yangian, an algebraic structure which is known to be related to the…
We suggest that trialgebraic symmetries migth be a sensible starting point for a notion of integrability for two dimensional spin systems. For a simple trialgebraic symmetry we give an explicit condition in terms of matrices which a Hamiltonian realizing such a symmetry has to satisfy and give an example of such a Hamiltonian which realizes a trialgebra recently given by the authors in another paper. Besides this, we also show that the same trialgebra can be realized on a kind of Fock space of q-oscillators, i.e. the suggested integrability concept gets via this symmetry a close connection to …
In recent years two intriguing observations have been made for N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and for superstrings on AdS5xS5: In the planar limit the computation of the spectrum is vastly simplified by the apparent integrability of the models. Furthermore, planar scattering amplitudes of the gauge theory display remarkable features which have been attributed to the appearance of a dual superconformal symmetry. Here we review the connection of these two developments from the point of view of the classical symmetry by means of a super-T-self-duality. In particular, we show explicitly how the charg…
Using integrability techniques, we compute four-point functions of single trace gauge-invariant operators in N=4 SYM to leading order at weak coupling. Our results are valid for operators of arbitrary size. In particular, we study the limit in which two of the four operators are taken to be much smaller than the others. We show that in this limit our weak coupling result matches with the strong coupling result in the Frolov-Tseytlin limit.
A new derivation of the five-dimensional Myers-Perry black-hole metric as a 2-soliton solution on a non-flat background is presented. It is intended to be an illustration of how the well-known Belinski-Zakharov method can be applied to find solutions of the Einstein equations in D-dimensional space-time with D-2 commuting Killing vectors using the complete integrability of this system. The method appears also to be promising for the analysis of the uniqueness questions for higher-dimensional black holes.
We obtain the asymptotic symmetry algebra of sl(3,R) x sl(3,R) Chern-Simons theory with Dirichlet boundary conditions for fixed chemical potential. These boundary conditions are obeyed by higher spin black holes. For each embedding of sl(2,R) into sl(3,R), we show that the asymptotic symmetry group is independent of the chemical potential. On the one hand, starting from AdS3 in the principal embedding, we show that the W3 x W3 symmetry is preserved upon turning on perturbatively spin 3 chemical potentials. On the other hand, starting from AdS3 in the diagonal embedding, we show that the W3^(2)…
We consider the harmonic-superspace ($HS$) system of equations that contains superfield $SYM^1_6$ constraints and equations of motion. A dynamical equation in the special $A$-frame is equivalent to the zero-curvature equation corresponding to a covariant conservation of $HS$-analyticity. Properties of a general $SYM^1_6$ solution for the gauge group $SU(2)$ are studied in the simplest harmonic gauge. An analogous approach to the integrability interpretation of $SYM$-$SG$-matter systems in $HS$ is discussed briefly.
How much spectral information is needed to determine the correlation functions of a conformal theory? We study this question in the context of planar supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, where integrability techniques accurately determine the single-trace spectrum at finite 't Hooft coupling. Corresponding OPE coefficients are constrained by dispersive sum rules, which implement crossing symmetry. Focusing on correlators of four stress-tensor multiplets, we construct combinations of sum rules which determine one-loop correlators, and we study a numerical bootstrap problem that nonperturbatively b…
We study the first sub-leading correction $O((\ln s)^0)$ to the cusp anomalous dimension in the high spin expansion of finite twist operators in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory. This term is still governed by a linear integral equation which we study in the weak and strong coupling regimes. In the strong coupling regime we find agreement with the string theory computations
With the help of the Penrose-Ward transform, which relates certain holomorphic vector bundles over the supertwistor space to the equations of motion of self-dual SYM theory in four dimensions, we construct hidden infinite-dimensional symmetries of the theory. We also present a new and shorter proof (cf. hep-th/0412163) of the relation between certain deformation algebras and hidden symmetry algebras. This article is based on a talk given by the author at the Workshop on Supersymmetries and Quantum Symmetries 2005 at the BLTP in Dubna, Russia.
We compute the contribution to the anomalous dimension of the twist-2 operators in N=4 SYM theory, which is proportional to the number of fermion loops inside Feynman diagrams or, formally, to the number of fermions. The result was obtained by the method based on the calculation of critical indices at the critical point by analogy with previous similar computations in scalar theories and in QCD. The obtained result is much simpler with compare to analogous results in QCD and almost satisfies the maximal transcedentality principle. A possible relation between the obtained result and integrabili…
We discuss the integrability of the Berkovits-Siegel open string field equations and derive an infinite set of their non-local (solution-generating) symmetries. The string field equations are embedded in an infinite system of overdetermined equations (BS hierarchy) associated with hidden string symmetries. The latter enforce the vanishing of most scattering amplitudes for the open N=2 string.
A $q$-deformed free spinning relativistic particle is discussed in the framework of the Lagrangian formalism. Three equivalent Lagrangians are obtained for this system which are endowed with $q$-deformed local (super)gauge symmetries and reparametrization invariance. It is demonstrated that these symmetries are on-shell equivalent only for $ q = \pm1 $ under particular identification of the transformation parameters. The same condition ($ q=\pm1 $) emerges due to the requirement that the $q$-commutator of two supersymmetric gauge transformations should generate a reparametrization plus a super…
We analyze the higher conserved charges of type IIB superstring on AdS5 x S5 from the perspective of a recently discovered generalized Gribov-Lipatov reciprocity. We provide several evidences that reciprocity holds for all the higher charges and not only for the energy. This is discussed in the simple case of twist L=2, and 3 operators in the sl(2) subsector at (a) multi-loop level in weak coupling, (b) classical level at strong coupling for the dual folded string.
An analysis of two loop integrability in the $su(1|1)$ sector of $\cal{N}$=4$SYM$ is presented from the point of view of Yangian symmetries. The analysis is carried out in the scaling limit of the dilatation operator which is shown to have a manifest $su(1|1)$ invariance. After embedding the scaling limit of the dilatation operator in a general (Inozemtsev like) integrable long ranged supersymmetric spin chain, the perturbative Yangian symmetry of the two loop dilatation operator is also made evident. The explicit formulae for the two loop gauge theory transfer matrix and Yangian charges are p…
The success of the identification of the planar dilatation operator of N=4 SYM with an integrable spin chain Hamiltonian has raised the question if this also is valid for a deformed theory. Several deformations of SYM have recently been under investigation in this context. In this work we consider the general Leigh-Strassler deformation. For the generic case the S-matrix techniques cannot be used to prove integrability. Instead we use R-matrix techniques to study integrability. Some new integrable points in the parameter space are found.
An overview of the massive generalization of Yangian symmetry for Feynman integrals is given. We illustrate the relation to a massive fishnet theory defined as a double-scaling limit of Coulomb-branch N=4 SYM theory.
In this paper, we motivate how the Hodge dual related with S-duality gives the hidden symmetry in the moduli space of IIB string. Utilizing the static $% κ$-symmetric Killing gauge, if we take the Hodge dual of the vierbeins keeping the connection invariant, the duality of Maure-Cartan equations and the equations of motion becomes manifest. Thus by twistly transforming the vierbein, we can express the BPR currents as the Lax connections by a unique spectral parameter. Then we construct the generators of the infinitesimal dressing symmetry, the related symmetric algebra becomes the affine $% gl…
In the absence of NSNS three-form flux the bosonic string on a symmetric space is described by a symmetric space coset sigma-model. Such models are known to be classically integrable. We show that the integrability extends also to cases with non-zero NSNS flux (respecting the isometries) provided that the flux satisfies a condition of the form H_{abc}H^{cde}~R_{ab}^{de}. We then turn our attention to the type II Green-Schwarz superstring on a symmetric space. We prove that if the space preserves some supersymmetry there exists a truncation of the full superspace to a supercoset space and deriv…
One of the main topics in the modern String Theory are the AdS/CFT dualities. Proving such conjectures is extremely difficult since the gauge and string theory perturbative regimes do not overlap. In this perspective, the discovery of infinitely many conserved charges, i.e. the integrability, in the planar AdS/CFT has allowed us to reach immense progresses in understanding and confirming the duality. We review the fundamental concepts and properties of integrability in two-dimensional sigma-models and in the AdS/CFT context. The first part is focused on the AdS_5/CFT_4 duality, especially the …
We present a framework for reducing all possible cohomogeneity-one strings, i.e., strings with geometrical symmetry, in a given spacetime to mechanical systems, and for analyzing integrability of the systems. As applications, it is clarified whether the systems of cohomogeneity-one strings in $AdS_5$, $AdS_5 \times S^5$, and $AdS_5 \times T^{p,q}$ are integrable or not. This method may reveal a different type of hidden symmetry of spacetimes.
The one-loop dilatation operator in Yang-Mills theory possesses a hidden integrability symmetry in the sector of maximal helicity Wilson operators. We calculate two-loop corrections to the dilatation operator and demonstrate that while integrability is broken for matter in the fundamental representation of the SU(3) gauge group, for the adjoint SU(N_c) matter it survives the conformal symmetry breaking and persists in supersymmetric N=1, N=2 and N=4 Yang-Mills theories.
