Using the mollifier method, we show that for a positive proportion of holomorphic Hecke eigenforms of level one and weight bounded by a large enough constant, the associated symmetric square $L$-function does not vanish at the central point of its critical strip. We note that our proportion is the same as that found by other authors for other families of $L$-functions also having symplectic symmetry type.
We study the first and second mollified moments of central values of a quadratic family of Hecke $L$-functions of prime moduli to show that more than nine percent of the members of this family do not vanish at the central values.
We generalize the Sarkozy-Furstenberg theorem on squares in difference sets of integers, and show that, given any positive definite function f:Z_N->C with density at least r(N), where r(N)=O((\log N)^{-c}), there is a perfect square s<=N/2 such that f(s) is non-zero. We do not rely on the usual analysis of the dichotomy of randomness and periodicity of a set and iterative application of the Hardy-Littlewood method. Instead, we find a bound for the van der Corput property of the set of squares.
Let F(z) be a newform of weight 2k and level one with a trivial character, and assume that F(z) is a non-zero eigenform of all Hecke operators. In this paper, we study nonvanishing for central values of twisted modular L-function of F.
We obtain a lower bound on the number of quadratic Dirichlet L-functions over the rational function field which vanish at the central point $s = 1/2$. This is in contrast with the situation over the rational numbers, where a conjecture of Chowla predicts there should be no such L-functions. The approach is based on the observation that vanishing at the central point can be interpreted geometrically, as the existence of a map to a fixed abelian variety from the hyperelliptic curve associated to the character.
We investigate the consequences of natural conjectures of Montgomery type on the non-vanishing of Dirichlet $L$-functions at the central point. We first justify these conjectures using probabilistic arguments. We then show using a result of Bombieri, Friedlander and Iwaniec and a result of the author that they imply that almost all Dirichlet $L$-functions do not vanish at the central point. We also deduce a quantitative upper bound for the proportion of Dirichlet $L$-functions for which $L(\frac 12,χ)=0$.
We evaluate the first three moments of central values of a family of qudratic Hecke $L$-functions in the Gaussian field with power saving error terms. In particular, we obtain asymptotic formulas for the first two moments with error terms of size $O(X^{1/2+\varepsilon})$. We also study the first and second mollified moments of the same family of $L$-functions to show that at least $87.5\%$ of the members of this family have non-vanishing central values.
We study simultaneous non-vanishing of $L(\tfrac{1}{2},\di)$ and $L(\tfrac{1}{2},g\otimes \di)$, when $\di$ runs over an orthogonal basis of the space of Hecke-Maass cusp forms for $SL(3,\mathbb{Z})$ and $g$ is a fixed $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ Hecke cusp form of weight $k\equiv 0 \pmod 4$.
We prove new congruences between special values of Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions for $\mathrm{GL}(n+1)\times\mathrm{GL}(n)$ over arbitrary number fields. This allows us to control the behavior of $p$-adic $L$-functions under Tate twists and to prove the existence of non-abelian $p$-adic $L$-functions for Hida families on $\mathrm{GL}(n+1)\times\mathrm{GL}(n)$. As an application, we prove strong non-vanishing results for central $L$-values: We give sufficient local conditions for twisted central Rankin-Selberg $L$-values to be generically non-zero.
Let $χ$ be a primitive Dirichlet character modulo $q$ and $L(s,χ)$ be the Dirichlet L-function associated to $χ$. Using a new two-piece mollifier we show that $L(\tfrac{1}{2},χ)\ne0$ for at least 34% of the characters in the family.
We prove non-vanishing modulo p, for a prime $\ell$ different from p, of central critical Rankin-Selberg L-values with anticyclotomic twists of $\ell$-power conductor. The L-function is Rankin product of a cusp form and a theta series of arithmetic Hecke character of an imaginary quadratic field. The paper is concerned with the case when the weight of Hecke character is greater than that of cusp form, so the L-value is essentially different in nature from the one in the landmark work of Vatsal and Cornut-Vatsal on the same theme.
We give a geometric criterion for Dirichlet $L$-functions associated to cyclic characters over the rational function field $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ to vanish at the central point $s=1/2$. The idea is based on the observation that vanishing at the central point can be interpreted as the existence of a map from the projective curve associated to the character to some abelian variety over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Using this geometric criterion, we obtain a lower bound on the number of cubic characters over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ whose $L$-functions vanish at the central point where $q=p^{4n}$ for any rational prime $…
The Katz-Sarnak Density Conjecture states that zeros of families of $L$-functions are well-modeled by eigenvalues of random matrix ensembles. For suitably restricted test functions, this correspondence yields upper bounds for the families' order of vanishing at the central point. We generalize previous results on the $n$\textsuperscript{th} centered moment of the distribution of zeros to allow arbitrary test functions. On the computational side, we use our improved formulas to obtain significantly better bounds on the order of vanishing for cuspidal newforms, setting world records for the qual…
The paper uses Iwasawa theory at the prime $p=2$ to prove non-vanishing theorems for the value at $s=1$ of the complex $L$-series of certain quadratic twists of the Gross family of elliptic curves with complex multiplication by the field $K = \BQ(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is any prime $\equiv 7 \mod 8$. Our results establish some broad generalizations of the non-vanishing theorem first proven by D. Rohrlich using complex analytic methods. Such non-vanishing theorems are important because it is known that they imply the finiteness of the Mordell-Weil group and the Tate-Shafarevich group of the cor…
Let $q$ be any prime $\equiv 7 \mod 16$, $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-q})$, and let $H$ be the Hilbert class field of $K$. Let $A/H$ be the Gross elliptic curve defined over $H$ with complex multiplication by the ring of integers of $K$. We prove the existence of a large explicit infinite family of quadratic twists of $A$ whose complex $L$-series does not vanish at $s=1$. This non-vanishing theorem is completely new when $q > 7$. Its proof depends crucially on the results established in our earlier paper for the Iwasawa theory at the prime $p=2$ of the abelian variety $B/K$, which is the restriction…
Let $ϕ$ be an even Hecke-Maass cusp form on ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ whose $L$-function does not vanish at the center of the functional equation. In this article, we obtain an exact formula of the average of triple products of $ϕ$, $f$ and $\bar f$, where $f$ runs over an orthonormal basis $H_k$ of Hecke eigen elliptic cusp forms on ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ of a fixed weight $k\geq 4$. As an application, we prove a quantitative non-vanishing results on the central values for the family of degree $6$ $L$-functions $L(s,ϕ\times {\rm Ad}\,f)$ with $f$ in the union of $H_k$ $({\rm K} \leq k < 2{\r…
We give a derivative version of the relative trace formula on PGL(2) studied in our previous work, and obtain a formula of an average of central values (derivatives) of automorphic $L$-functions for Hilbert cusp forms. As an application, we prove existence of Hilbert cusp forms with non-vanishing central values (derivatives) such that the absolute degrees of their Hecke fields are sufficiently large.
In the early 1980s, Rohrlich began a study of canonical Hecke characters, which are closely related to the simplest examples of CM elliptic curves. He and Montgomery showed the non-vanishing of the central value when the L-function has an even functional equation, and we now show the non-vanishing of the central derivative when the functional equation is odd. Using the results of Gross-Zagier and Kolyvagin-Logachev, we can apply the non-vanishing to the ranks and Shafarevitch-Tate groups of the Q-curves "A(p)" studied by Gross in his thesis. In particular, their rank is determined by a congrue…
The main objective of this article is to compute a first moment for product of Dirichlet and twisted self-dual $GL(3)$ $L$-functions. We discuss the possible simultaneous non vanishing at the central point. We use properties of symmetric squares $L$-functions.
Let $p\ge 7$ be a prime number and $f$ a normalized eigen-newform with good reduction at $p$ such that its $p$-th Fourier coefficient vanishes. We construct a rank-two Euler system attached to the $p$-adic realization of the symmetric square motive of $f$. Furthermore, we show that the non-triviality is guaranteed by the non-vanishing of the leading term of the relevant $L$-value and the non-vanishing of a certain $p$-adic period modulo $p$.
The Riemann Zeta-Function is the most studied L-function; it's zeroes give information about the prime numbers. We can associate L-functions to a wide array of objects, and in general, the zeroes of these L-functions give information about those objects. For arbitrary L-functions, the order of vanishing at the central point is of particular important. For example, the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture states that the order of vanishing at the central point of an elliptic curve L-function is the rank of the Mordell-Weil group of that elliptic curve. The Katz-Sarnak Density Conjecture states …
The question about modular forms have recently received a lot of attention; concerning the non-vanishing of automorphic L-functions Michel, Kowalski and Vanderkam proved (among others results) that there's positive proportion of non-vanishing of primitives forms at the critical point. This result was proved by these authors in the prime level case; on the othe hand, Iwaniec, Luo and Sarnak showed the same result for the squarefree level case. In order to understand the influence of the arithmetic shape of level forms in their vanishing, this paper studies a generalisation to the primitives for…
Let $π$ be an irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation of a quasi-split unitary group ${\rm U}_{\mathfrak n}$ defined over a number field $F$. Under the assumption that $π$ has a generic global Arthur parameter, we establish the non-vanishing of the central value of $L$-functions, $L(\frac{1}{2},π\timesχ)$, with a certain automorphic character $χ$ of ${\rm U}_1$, for the case of ${\mathfrak n}=2,3,4$, and for the general ${\mathfrak n}\geq 5$ by assuming a conjecture on certain refined properties of global Arthur packets. In consequence, we obtain some simultaneous non-vanishing results…
We construct a meromorphic function on the eigencurve that interpolates a square root of the ratio of the central values of two quadratic twists of the $L$-function at classical points.
In this paper, we study central values of the family of quadratic twists of modular $L$-functions of moduli $8p$, with $p$ ranging over odd primes. Assuming the truth of the generalized Riemann hypothesis, we establish a positive proportion non-vanishing result for the corresponding $L$-values.
The theme of this work is the study of the Nekovář-Selmer group H^1_f(K,T) attached to a twisted Hida family T of Galois representations and a quadratic number field K. The results that we obtain have the following shape: if a twisted L-function of a suitable modular form in the Hida family has order of vanishing r at most 1 at the central critical point then the rank of H^1_f(K,T) as a module over a certain local Hida-Hecke algebra is equal to r. Under the above assumption, we also show that infinitely many twisted L-functions of modular forms in the Hida family have the same order of vanishi…
Iwaniec and Sarnak showed that at the minimum 25% of L-values associated to holomorphic newforms of fixed even integral weight and level $N \rightarrow \infty$ do not vanish at the critical point when N is square-free and $ϕ(N)\sim N$. In this paper we extend the given result to the case of prime power level $N=p^ν$, $ν\geq 2$.
We introduce a new trace formula of Kuznetsov type involving the central standard L-values and the Whittaker periods of cuspidal automorphic representations of PGL_n(Q) which are spherical at the archimedean place. As an application, we show a simultaneous non-vanishing of standard L-values at n-1 points on the critical strip for infinitely many Hecke-Maass cuspidal newforms.
Fix $g$ a Hecke-Maass form for $SL_3(\mathbb{Z})$. Let $q$ be any large prime number. In the family of holomorphic newforms $f$ of level $q$ and fixed weight, we find the average value of the product $L(\half,g\times f)L(\half,f)$. From this we derive a result on the simultaneous non-vanishing of these $L$-functions at the central point.
In this paper, we study the non-vanishing of the central values of the Rankin-Selberg $L$-function of two adèlic Hilbert primitive forms ${\bf f}$ and ${\bf g}$, both of which have varying weight parameter $k$. We prove that, for sufficiently large $k$, there are at least $\frac{k}{(\log k)^{c}}$ adèlic Hilbert primitive forms ${\bf f}$ of weight $k$ for which $L(\frac12, {\bf f}\otimes{\bf g})$ are nonzero.
In this paper, we study moments of the central values of quartic Dirichlet $L$-functions and establish quantitative non-vanishing result for these $L$-values.
In this paper, we study moments of central values of cubic Hecke $L$-functions in $\mathbb{Q}(i)$, and establish quantitative non-vanishing result for those values.
In this paper, we will first investigate the linear relations of a one parameter family of Siegel Poincaré series. Then we give the applications to the non-vanishing of Fourier coefficients of Siegel cusp eigenforms and the central values.
In this paper, we consider three problems about signs of the Fourier coefficients of a cusp form $\mathfrak{f}$ with half-integral weight:\begin{itemize}\item[--]The first negative coefficient of the sequence $\{\mathfrak{a}\_{\mathfrak{f}}(tn^2)\}\_{n\in \N}$,\item[--]The number of coefficients $\mathfrak{a}\_{\mathfrak{f}}(tn^2)$ of same signs,\item[--]Non-vanishing of coefficients $\mathfrak{a}\_{\mathfrak{f}}(tn^2)$ in short intervals and in arithmetic progressions,\end{itemize}where $\mathfrak{a}\_{\mathfrak{f}}(n)$ is the $n$-th Fourier coefficient of $\mathfrak{f}$ and $t$ is a square-f…
In this paper, we consider the family $\{L_j(s)\}_{j=1}^{\infty}$ of $L$-functions associated to an orthonormal basis $\{u_j\}_{j=1}^{\infty}$ of even Hecke-Maass forms for the modular group $SL(2, Z)$ with eigenvalues $\{λ_j=κ_{j}^{2}+1/4\}_{j=1}^{\infty}$. We prove the following effective non-vanishing result: At least $50 \%$ of the central values $L_j(1/2)$ with $κ_j \leq T$ do not vanish as $T\rightarrow \infty$. Furthermore, we establish effective non-vanishing results in short intervals.
