We propose in this paper an approach to Breuil's conjecture on a Langlands correspondence between $p$-adic Galois representations and representations of $p$-adic Lie groups in $p$-adic topological vector spaces. We suggest that Berthelot's theory of arithmetic $D$-modules should give a $p$-adic analogue of Kashiwara's theory of $D$-modules for real Lie groups i.e. it should give a realization of the $p$-adic representations of a $p$-adic Lie group as spaces of overconvergent solutions of arithmetic $D$-modules which will come equipped with an action of the Galois group. We shall discuss the case of Siegel modular varieties as a possible testing ground for the proposal.
These are expanded notes from lectures at the Workshop "Representation Theory and Applications" held at Yeditepe University, Istanbul, in honor of Roger E. Howe. They are supplemented by the application of algebraic character theory to the construction of Galois-equivariant characters for Harish-Chandra modules.
We study the $p$-adic (generalized) hypergeometric equations by using the theory of multiplicative convolution of arithmetic $\mathscr{D}$-modules. As a result, we prove that the hypergeometric isocrystals with suitable rational parameters have a structure of overconvergent $F$-isocrystals.
Let $K$ be a discrete valuation field with perfect residue field, we study the functor from weakly admissible filtered $(φ,N,G_K)$-modules over $K$ to the isogeny category of Breuil-Kisin-Fargues $G_K$-modules. This functor is the composition of a functor defined by Fargues-Fontaine from weakly admissible filtered $(φ,N,G_K)$-modules to $G_K$-equivariant modifications of vector bundles over the Fargues-Fontaine curve $X_{FF}$, with the functor of Fargues-Scholze that between the category of admissible modifications of vector bundles over $X_{FF}$ and the isogeny category of Breuil-Kisin-Fargue…
In this paper we consider certain families of arithmetic subgroups of SO^0(p,q) and SL_3(R), respectively. We study the cohomology of such arithmetic groups with coefficients in arithmetically defined modules. We show that for natural sequences of such modules the torsion in the cohomology grows exponentially.
For A,epsilon>0 and any sufficiently large odd n we show that for almost all k up to n^{1/5-epsilon} there exists a representation n=p1+p2+p3 with primes in residue classes b1,b2,b3 mod k for almost all admissible triplets b1,b2,b3 of reduced residues mod k.
We prove the finiteness and compatibility with base change of the (phi,Gamma)-cohomology and the Iwasawa cohomology of arithmetic families of (phi,Gamma)-modules. Using this finiteness theorem, we show that a family of Galois representations that is densely pointwise refined in the sense of Mazur is actually trianguline as a family over a large subspace. In the case of the Coleman-Mazur eigencurve, we determine the behavior at all points.
We consider stacks of filtered phi-modules over rigid analytic spaces and adic spaces. We show that these modules parametrize p-adic Galois representations of the absolute Galois group of a p-adic field with varying coefficients over an open substack containing all classical points. Further we study a period morphism (defined by Pappas and Rapoport) from a stack parametrizing integral data and determine the image of this morphism.
We study the $Λ$-module structure of the ordinary parts of the arithmetic cohomology groups of modular Jacobians made out of various towers of modular curves. We prove that the ordinary parts of $Λ$-adic Selmer groups coming from two different towers have "almost same" $Λ$-module structures. We also prove the cotorsionness of $Λ$-adic Tate-Shafarevich group under mild assumptions.
Let $V$ be a complete discrete valued ring of mixed characteristic $(0,p)$, $K$ its field of fractions, $k$ its residue field which is supposed to be perfect. Let $X$ be a separated $k$-scheme of finite type and $Y$ be a smooth open of $X$. We check that the equivalence of categories $sp_{(Y,X),+}$ (from the category of overconvergent isocrystals on $(Y,X)/K$ to that of overcoherent isocrystals on $(Y,X)/K$) commutes with tensor products. Next, in Berthelot's theory of arithmetic $\mathcal{D}$-modules, we prove the stability under tensor products of the devissability in overconvergent isocryst…
Recently the second author has associated a finite $\F_q[T]$-module $H$ to the Carlitz module over a finite extension of $\F_q(T)$. This module is an analogue of the ideal class group of a number field. In this paper we study the Galois module structure of this module $H$ for `cyclotomic' extensions of $\F_q(T)$. We obtain function field analogues of some classical results on cyclotomic number fields, such as the $p$-adic class number formula, and a theorem of Mazur and Wiles about the Fitting ideal of ideal class groups. We also relate the Galois module $H$ to Anderson's module of circular un…
In the arithmetic of function fields, Drinfeld modules play the role that elliptic curves play in the arithmetic of number fields. The aim of this paper is to study a non-existence problem of Drinfeld modules with constrains on torsion points at places with large degree. This is motivated by a conjecture of Christopher Rasmussen and Akio Tamagawa on the non-existence of abelian varieties over number fields with some arithmetic constraints. We prove the non-existence of Drinfeld modules satisfying Rasmussen-Tamagawa type conditions in the case where the inseparable degree of base fields is not …
This is a sequel to the paper [Cas]. Here, we extend the methods of Farb-Wolfson using the theory of FI_G-modules to obtain stability of equivariant Galois representations of the etale cohomology of orbit configuration spaces. We establish subexponential bounds on the growth of unstable cohomology, and then use the Grothendieck-Lefschetz trace formula to obtain results on arithmetic statistics for orbit configuration spaces over finite fields. In particular, we show that the average value, across polynomials over F_q, of certain Gauss sums over their roots, stabilizes as the degree goes to inf…
Here we initiate a program to study relationships between finite groups and arithmetic-geometric invariants in a systematic way. To do this we first introduce a notion of optimal module for a finite group in the setting of holomorphic mock Jacobi forms. Then we classify optimal modules for the cyclic groups of prime order, in the special case of weight two and index one, where class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields play an important role. Finally we exhibit a connection between the classification we establish and the arithmetic geometry of imaginary quadratic twists of modular curves of p…
Let $Γ$ be a lattice in a locally compact group $G$. In earlier work, we used $KK$-theory to equip the $K$-groups of any $Γ$-$C^{*}$-algebra on which the commensurator of $Γ$ acts with Hecke operators. When $Γ$ is arithmetic, this gives Hecke operators on the $K$-theory of certain $C^{*}$-algebras that are naturally associated with $Γ$. In this paper, we first study the topological $K$-theory of the arithmetic manifold associated to $Γ$. We prove that the Chern character commutes with Hecke operators. Afterwards, we show that the Shimura product of double cosets naturally corresponds to the Ka…
In the first part of the paper we give a definition of G_q-function and we establish a regularity result, obtained as a combination of a q-analogue of the Andre'-Chudnovsky Theorem [And89, VI] and Katz Theorem [Kat70, §13]. In the second part of the paper, we combine it with some formal q-analogous Fourier transformations, obtaining a statement on the irrationality of special values of the formal $q$-Borel transformation of a G_q-function.
In our previous paper we describe the Galois module structures of $p$th-power class groups $K^\times/{K^{\times p}}$, where $K/F$ is a cyclic extension of degree $p$ over a field $F$ containing a primitive $p$th root of unity. Our description relies upon arithmetic invariants associated with $K/F$. Here we construct field extensions $K/F$ with prescribed arithmetic invariants, thus completing our classification of Galois modules $K^{\times}/K^{\times p}$.
Let $K$ be a number field, and let $K(x_1,...,x_d)$ be the field of rational fractions in the variables $x_1,...,x_d$. In this paper, we introduce two kinds of Laplace transform adapted to solutions of the differential $K(x_1,...,x_d)$-modules with regular singularities, and give some of their basic differential and arithmetic properties. The purpose of this article is to provide some tools which might be useful, in particular, for the arithmetic study of the differential $K(x_1,...,x_d)$-modules associated to $E$-functions in several variables.
The cuspidal cohomology groups of arithmetic groups in certain infinite dimensional Modules are computed. As a result we get a simultaneous generalization of the Patterson-Conjecture and the Lewis-Correspondence.
We discuss the following topics: n-dimensional local fields and adelic groups; harmonic analysis on local fields and adelic groups for two-dimensional schemes (function spaces, Fourier transform, Poisson formula); representations of discrete Heisenberg groups; adelic Heisenberg groups and their representations arising from two-dimensional schemes.
We consider weighted averages of the number of representations of an even integer as a sum of two prime numbers, where each summand lies in a given arithmetic progression modulo a common integer $q$. Our result is uniform in a suitable range for $q$.
The power classes of a field are well-known for their ability to parameterize elementary $p$-abelian Galois extensions. These classical objects have recently been reexamined through the lens of their Galois module structure. Module decompositions have been computed in several cases, providing deep new insight into absolute Galois groups. The surprising result in each case is that there are far fewer isomorphism types of indecomposables than one would expect generically, with summands predominately free over associated quotient rings. Though non-free summands are the exception both in their for…
We compute the non-Eisenstein systems of Hecke eigenvalues contributing to the $p$-arithmetic homology of irreducible smooth mod $p$ representations $π$ of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ and to the cohomology of their duals. We show that in most cases they are associated to odd irreducible 2-dimensional Galois representations whose local component at $p$ corresponds under the mod $p$ local Langlands correspondence to a smooth representation that contains $π$ as a subrepresentation.
The Eichler-Shimura isomorphism realizes the automorphic representation generated by an automorphic newform in certain cohomology of an arithmetic group. In this short note, we give a cohomological interpretation of the Eichler-Shimura isomorphism as a connection morphism of certain exact sequence of G-modules, for the multiplicative group G of any quaternion algebra over a totally real field.
Let $X$ be a normal algebraic variety over a finitely generated field $k$ of characteristic zero, and let $\ell$ be a prime. Say that a continuous $\ell$-adic representation $ρ$ of $π_1^{\text{ét}}(X_{\bar k})$ is arithmetic if there exists a representation $\tilde ρ$ of a finite index subgroup of $π_1^{\text{ét}}(X)$, with $ρ$ a subquotient of $\tildeρ|_{π_1(X_{\bar k})}$. We show that there exists an integer $N=N(X, \ell)$ such that every nontrivial, semisimple arithmetic representation of $π_1^{\text{ét}}(X_{\bar k})$ is nontrivial mod $\ell^N$. As a corollary, we prove that any nontrivial …
We study the arithmetic of the twist of the Fermat quartic defined by $X^4 + Y^4 + Z^4 = 0$ which has no $\mathbb{Q}$-rational point. We calculate the Mordell--Weil group of the Jacobian variety explicilty. We show that the degree $0$ part of the Picard group is a free $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-module of rank $2$, whereas the Mordell--Weil group is a free $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-module of rank $3$. Thus the relative Brauer group is non-trivial. We also show that this quartic violates the local-global property for linear determinantal representations.
We prove the existence of a module for the largest Mathieu group, whose trace functions are weight two quasimodular forms. Restricting to the subgroup fixing a point, we see that the integrality of these functions is equivalent to certain divisibility conditions on the number of $\mathbb{F}_p$ points on Jacobians of modular curves. Extending such expressions to arbitrary primes, we find trace functions for modules of cyclic groups of prime order with similar connections. Moreover, for cyclic groups, we give an explicit vertex operator algebra construction whose trace functions are given only i…
In this note, assuming a variant of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, which does not exclude the existence of real zeros, we prove an asymptotic formula for the mean value of the representation function for the sum of two primes in arithmetic progressions. This is an improvement of the result of F. Rüppel in 2009, and the generalization of the result of A. Languasco and A. Zaccagnini concerning the ordinary Goldbach problem in 2012.
We give a representation of the classical theory of multiplicative arithmetic functions (MF)in the ring of symmetric polynomials. The basis of the ring of symmetric polynomials that we use is the isobaric basis, a basis especially sensitive to the combinatorics of partitions of the integers. The representing elements are recursive sequences of Schur polynomials evaluated at subrings of the complex numbers. The multiplicative arithmetic functions are units in the Dirichlet ring of arithmetic functions, and their properties can be described locally, that is, at each prime number $p$. Our represe…
Assuming a conjecture on distinct zeros of Dirichlet L-functions we get asymptotic results on the average number of representations of an integer as the sum of two primes in arithmetic progression. On the other hand the existence of good error terms gives information on the the location of zeros of L-functions and possible Siegel zeros. Similar results are obtained for an integer in a congruence class expressed as the sum of two primes.
We prove some new results on the arithmetic of abelian varieties over function fields of one variable over finitely generated (infinite) fields. Among other things, we introduce certain new natural objects `discrete Selmer groups' and `discrete Shafarevich-Tate groups', and prove that they are finitely generated $\Bbb Z$-modules. Further, we prove that in the isotrivial case, the discrete Shafarevich-Tate group vanishes and the discrete Selmer group coincides with the Mordell-Weil group. One of the key ingredients to prove these results is a new specialisation theorem à la Néron for first Galo…
We relate the singularities of a scheme $X$ to the asymptotics of the number of points of $X$ over finite rings. This gives a partial answer to a question of Mustata. We use this result to count representations of arithmetic lattices. More precisely, if $Γ$ is an arithmetic lattice whose $\mathbb{Q}$-rank is greater than one, let $r_n(Γ)$ be the number of irreducible $n$-dimensional representations of $Γ$ up to isomorphism. We prove that there is a constant $C$ (for example, $C=746$ suffices) such that $r_n(Γ)=O(n^C)$ for every such $Γ$. This answers a question of Larsen and Lubotzky.
In this paper we extend a conjecture of Ash and Sinnott relating niveau one Galois representation to the mod p cohomology of congruence subgroups of SL(n,Z) to include Galois representations of higher niveau. We then present computational evidence for our conjecture in the case n=3 in the form of three-dimensional Galois representations which appear to correspond to cohomology eigenclasses as predicted by the conjecture. Our examples include Galois representations with nontrivial weight and level, as well as irreducible three-dimensional representations which are in no obvious way related to l…
The goal of this article is to prove a comparison theorem between rigid cohomology and cohomology computed using the theory of arithmetic $\mathscr{D}$-modules. To do this, we construct a specialisation functor from Le Stum's category of constructible isocrystals to the derived category of arithmetic $\mathscr{D}$-modules. For objects `of Frobenius type', we show that the essential image of this functor consists of overholonomic $\mathscr{D}^\dagger$-modules, and lies inside the heart of the dual constructible t-structure. We use this to give a more global construction of Caro's specialisation…
Let $k$ be a complete discretely valued field of equal characteristic $p > 0$ with possibly imperfect residue field and let $G_k$ be its Galois group. We prove that the conductors computed by the arithmetic ramification filtrations on $G_k$ coincide with the differential Artin conductors and Swan conductors of Galois representations of $G_k$. As a consequence, we give a Hasse-Arf theorem for arithmetic ramification filtrations in this case. As applications, we obtain a Hasse-Arf theorem for finite flat group schemes; we also give a comparison theorem between the differential Artin conductors a…
We prove a criterion for the irreducibility of an integral group representation ρover the fraction field of a noetherian domain R in terms of suitably defined reductions of ρat prime ideals of R. As applications, we give irreducibility results for universal deformations of residual representations, with a special attention to universal deformations of residual Galois representations associated with modular forms of weight at least 2.
Let $H$ be a commutative semigroup with unit element such that every non-unit can be written as a finite product of irreducible elements (atoms). For every $k \in \mathbb N$, let $\mathscr U_k (H)$ denote the set of all $\ell \in \mathbb N$ with the property that there are atoms $u_1, \ldots, u_k, v_1, \ldots, v_{\ell}$ such that $u_1 \cdot \ldots \cdot u_k = v_1 \cdot \ldots \cdot v_{\ell}$ (thus, $\mathscr U_k (H)$ is the union of all sets of lengths containing $k$). The Structure Theorem for Unions states that, for all sufficiently large $k$, the sets $\mathscr U_k (H)$ are almost arithmeti…
This note provides an insight to the diophantine properties of abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication over number fields. We study the fields of definition of the endomorphisms on these abelian varieties and the images of the Galois representations on their Tate modules. We illustrate our results with several explicit examples.
In the present paper, we will show that three apparently disjoint objects: Galois representations arising from twenty-seven lines on a cubic surface (number theory and arithmetic algebraic geometry), Picard modular forms (automorphic forms), rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds and their arithmetic (Diophantine geometry) are intimately related to Hessian polyhedra and their invariants. We construct a Galois representation whose image is a proper subgroup of $W(E_6)$, the Weyl group of the exceptional Lie algebra $E_6$. We give a conjecture about the identification of two different kinds of $L$-function…
Let $p$ be a prime number, and $G$ a compact $p$-adic Lie group. We recall that the Iwasawa algebra $Λ(G)$ is defined to be the completed group ring of $G$ over the ring of $p$-adic integers. Interesting examples of finitely generated modules over $Λ(G),$ in which $G$ is the image of Galois in the automorphism group of a $p$-adic Galois representation, abound in arithmetic geometry. The study of such $Λ(G)$-modules arising from arithmetic geometry can be thought of as a natural generalization of Iwasawa theory. One of the cornerstones of classical Iwasawa theory is the fact that, when $G$ is t…
Uniformly for small $q$ and $(a,q)=1$, we obtain an estimate for the weighted number of ways a sufficiently large integer can be represented as the sum of a prime congruent to $a$ modulo $q$ and a square-free integer. Our method is based on the notion of local model developed by Ramaré and may be viewed as an abstract circle method.
We consider a complete discrete valuation field of characteristic p, with possibly non perfect residue field. Let V be a rank one continuous representation with finite local monodromy of its absolute Galois group. We will prove that the Arithmetic Swan conductor of V (defined after Kato in [Kat89] which fits in the more general theory of [AS02] and [AS06]) coincides with the Differential Swan conductor of the associated differential module $D^†(V)$ defined by Kedlaya in [Ked]. This construction is a generalization to the non perfect residue case of the Fontaine's formalism as presented in [Tsu…
