The Hardy space H^2(R) for the upper half plane together with a unimodular function group representation u(λ) = \exp(i(λ_1ψ_1 + ... + λ_nψ_n)) for λin R^n, gives rise to a manifold M of orthogonal projections for the subspaces u(λ)H^2(R) of L^2(R). For classes of admissible functions ψ_i the strong operator topology closures of M and M \cup M^\perp are determined explicitly as various n-balls and n-spheres. The arguments used are direct and rely on the analysis of oscillatory integrals and Hilbert space geometry. Some classes of these closed projection manifolds are classified up to unitary equivalence. In particular the Fourier-Plancherel 2-sphere and the hyperbolic 3-sphere of Katavolos and Power appear as distinguished special cases admitting nontrivial unitary automorphisms groups which are explicitly described.
In this note, we highlight some properties of the metric projection onto a closed convex in a Hilbert space. In particular, we use some recent results on fixed points of nonexpansive potential operators.
We fully characterize orthogonal projections of infinite right circular (round) cones in real Hilbert spaces. Another interpretation is that, given two vectors in a real Hilbert space, we establish the optimal estimate on the angle between the orthogonal projections of the two vectors. The estimate depends on the angle between the two vectors and the position of only one of the two vectors. Our results also make a contributions to Cauchy-Bunyakovsky-Schwarz type inequalities.
We provide a direct proof of a result regarding the asymptotic behavior of alternating nearest point projections onto two closed and convex sets in a Hilbert space. Our arguments are based on nonexpansive mapping theory.
Halmos' two projections theorem for Hilbert space operators is one of the fundamental results in operator theory. In this paper, we introduce the term of two harmonious projections in the context of adjointable operators on Hilbert $C^*$-modules, extend Halmos' two projections theorem to the case of two harmonious projections. We also give some new characterizations of the closed submodules and their associated projections. As an application, a norm equation associated to a characterization of the Friedrichs angle is proved to be true in the framework of Hilbert $C^*$-modules.
We characterize the frames on an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space that can be projected to a tight frame for an infinite dimensional subspace. A result of Casazza and Leon states that an arbitrary frame for a 2N- or (2N-1)-dimensional Hilbert space can be projected to a tight frame for an N-dimensional subspace. Surprisingly, we demonstrate a large class of frames for infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces which cannot be projected to a tight frame for any infinite dimensional subspace.
If $K$ and $L$ are mutually dual closed convex cones in a Hilbert space with the metric projections onto them denoted by $P_K$ and $P_L$ respectively, then the following two assertions are equivalent: (i) $P_K$ is isotone with respect to the order induced by $K$ (i. e. $v-u\in K$ implies $P_Kv-P_Ku\in K$); (ii) $P_L$ is subadditive with respect to the order induced by $L$ (i. e. $P_Lu+P_Lv-P_L(u+v)\in L$ for any $u, v \in \R^n$). This extends the similar result of A. B. Németh and the author for Euclidean spaces. The extension is essential because the proof of the result for Euclidean spaces i…
We prove that every continuous mapping from a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $X$ into $\mathbb{R}^{m}$ can be uniformly approximated by $C^\infty$ smooth mappings {\em with no critical points}. This kind of result can be regarded as a sort of very strong approximate version of the Morse-Sard theorem. Some consequences of the main theorem are as follows. Every two disjoint closed subsets of $X$ can be separated by a one-codimensional smooth manifold which is a level set of a smooth function with no critical points; this fact may be viewed as a nonlinear analogue of the geometrical…
This work is devoted to establish the strong convergence results of an iterative algorithm generated by the shrinking projection method in Hilbert spaces. The proposed approximation sequence is used to find a common element in the set of solutions of a finite family of split equilibrium problems and the set of common fixed points of a finite family of total asymptotically strict pseudo contractions in such setting. The results presented in this paper improve and extend some recent corresponding results in the literature.
Given a complex Hilbert space H, we study the differential geometry of the manifold M of all projections in V:=L(H). Using the algebraic structure of V, a torsionfree affine connection $\nabla$ (that is invariant under the group of automorphisms of V) is defined on every connected component of M, which in this way becomes a symmetric holomorphic manifold that consists of projections of the same rank r, (0< r < \infty). We prove that M admits a Riemann structure if and only if M consists of projections that have the same finite rank r or the same finite corank, and in that case $\nabla$ is the …
Given a complex Hilbert space H and the von Neumann algebra L(H) of all bounded linear operators on H, we study the Grassmann manifold M of all projections in L(H) that have a fixed finite rank r. We take the Jordan-Banach triple theory approach which allows us to define a natural Levi-Civita connection on M. We identify the geodesics, compute the Riemann distance and prove some properties of M
Our main theorem is in the generality of the axioms of Hilbert space, and the theory of unbounded operators. Consider two Hilbert spaces such that their intersection contains a fixed vector space D. It is of interest to make a precise linking between such two Hilbert spaces when it is assumed that D is dense in one of the two; but generally not in the other. No relative boundedness is assumed. Nonetheless, under natural assumptions (motivated by potential theory), we prove a theorem where a comparison between the two Hilbert spaces is made via a specific selfadjoint semibounded operator. Appli…
Sets of bilinear constraints are important in various machine learning models. Mathematically, they are hyperbolas in a product space. In this paper, we give a complete formula for projections onto sets of bilinear constraints or hyperbolas in a general Hilbert space.
We study the metric projection onto the closed convex cone in a real Hilbert space $\mathscr{H}$ generated by a sequence $\mathcal{V} = \{v_n\}_{n=0}^\infty$. The first main result of this paper provides a sufficient condition under which we can identify the closed convex cone generated by $\mathcal{V}$ with the following set: \[ \mathcal{C}[[\mathcal{V}]]: = \bigg\{\sum_{n=0}^\infty a_n v_n\Big|a_n\geq 0,\text{ the series }\sum_{n=0}^\infty a_n v_n\text{ converges in $\mathscr{H}$}\bigg\}. \] Then, by adapting classical results on general convex cones, we give a useful description of the metr…
We prove that sub-Riemannian manifolds are infinitesimally Hilbertian (i.e., the associated Sobolev space is Hilbert) when equipped with an arbitrary Radon measure. The result follows from an embedding of metric derivations into the space of square-integrable sections of the horizontal bundle, which we obtain on all weighted sub-Finsler manifolds. As an intermediate tool, of independent interest, we show that any sub-Finsler distance can be monotonically approximated from below by Finsler ones. All the results are obtained in the general setting of possibly rank-varying structures.
The paper is concerned with the problem of identifying the norm attaining operators in the von Neumann algebra generated by two orthogonal projections on a Hilbert space. This algebra contains every skew projection on that Hilbert space and hence the results of the paper also describe functions of skew projections and their adjoints that attain the norm.
We prove that generalized loop spaces of Hartogs manifolds are Hilbert-Hartogs. We prove also that Hilbert-Hartogs manifolds possess a better extension properties that it is postulated in their definition. Finally, we give a list of examples of Hilbert-Hartogs manifolds.
In this paper, we consider the CQ projection method and the shrinking projection method given by a finite family of nonexpansive mappings of the unit sphere of a real Hilbert space, and prove strong convergence theorems to common fixed points of the mappings.
If $\H$ is a Hilbert space, $A$ is a positive bounded linear operator on $\cH$ and $\cS$ is a closed subspace of $\cH$, the relative position between $\cS$ and $A^{-1}(\cS \orto)$ establishes a notion of compatibility. We show that the compatibility of $(A,\cS)$ is equivalent to the existence of a convenient orthogonal projection in the operator range $R(A^{1/2})$ with its canonical Hilbertian structure.
\begin{abstract} In this manuscript, we answer a list of longstanding open problems on weak phase retrieval including: (1) A complete classification of the vectors $\{x_i\}_{i=1}^2$ in $\RR^3$ that do weak phase retrieval; (2) We show that frames doing weak phase retrieval in $\RR^n$ must span $\RR^n$; (3) We give an example of a set of vectors doing phase retrieval but their orthogonal complement hyperplanes fail weak phase retrieval; (4) We give a classification of weak phase retrievable frames - which makes clear the difference between phase retrieval and weak phase retrieval; (5) We classi…
Let $B$ be a $C^{*}$-algebra, $X$ a Hilbert $C^{*}$-module over $B$ and $M,N\subset X$ a pair of complemented submodules. We prove the $C^{*}$-module version of von Neumann's alternating projections theorem: the sequence $(P_{N}P_{M})^{n}$ is Cauchy in the $*$-strong module topology if and only if $M\cap N$ is the complement of $\overline{M^{\perp}+N^{\perp}}$. In this case, the $*$-strong limit of $(P_{M}P_{N})^{n}$ is the orthogonal projection onto $M\cap N$. We use this result and the local-global principle to show that the cosine of the Friedrichs angle $c(M,N)$ between any pair of complem…
Extending Meshulam's result on the boundedness of orbits of relaxed projections onto affine subspaces from finite to infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces
We prove that for any two projection operators $f,g$ on Hilbert space, their anticommutator norm is given by the formula \[\|fg + gf\| = \|fg\| + \|fg\|^2.\] The result demonstrates an interesting contrast between the commutator and anticommutator of two projection operators on Hilbert space. Specifically, the norm of the anticommutator $\|fg + gf\|$ is a simple quadratic function of the norm $\|fg\|$ while the commutator norm $\|fg - gf\|$ is not a function of $\|fg\|$. Nevertheless, the result gives the following bounds that are functions of $\|fg\|$ on the commutator norm: $\|fg\| - \|fg\|^…
Frames in a separable quaternionic Hilbert space were introduced and studied in [17] to have more applications. In this paper, we extend the study of frames in quaternionic Hilbert spaces and introduce different types of duals of a frame in separable quaternionic Hilbert spaces. As an application, we give the orthogonal projection of $\ell^2(\HH)$ onto the range of analysis operator of the given frame, in terms of elements of canonical dual frame and elements of the frame in quaternionic Hilbert space. Finally, we give an expression for the orthogonal projection in terms of operators related t…
We prove the boundedness on $L^p$, $1<p<\infty$, of operators on manifolds which arise by taking conditional expectation of transformations of stochastic integrals. These operators include various classical operators such as second order Riesz transforms and operators of Laplace transform-type.
Given a complex, separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, we characterize those operators for which $\| P T (I-P) \| = \| (I-P) T P \|$ for all orthogonal projections $P$ on $\mathcal{H}$. When $\mathcal{H}$ is finite-dimensional, we also obtain a complete characterization of those operators for which $\mathrm{rank}\, (I-P) T P = \mathrm{rank}\, P T (I-P)$ for all orthogonal projections $P$. When $\mathcal{H}$ is infinite-dimensional, we show that any operator with the latter property is normal, and its spectrum is contained in either a line or a circle in the complex plane.
Infinite-dimensional manifolds modelled on arbitrary Hilbert spaces of functions are considered. It is shown that changes in model rather than changes of charts within the same model make coordinate formalisms on finite and infinite-dimensional manifolds deeply similar. In this context the obtained infinite-dimensional counterparts of simple notions such as basis, dual basis, orthogonal basis, etc. are shown to be closely related to the choice of a model. It is also shown that in this formalism a single tensor equation on an infinite-dimensional manifold produces a family of functional equatio…

We study reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHS) on a Riemannian manifold. In particular, we discuss under which condition Sobolev spaces are RKHS and characterize their reproducing kernels. Further, we introduce and discuss a class of smoother RKHS that we call diffusion spaces. We illustrate the general results with a number of detailed examples.
Let $A$ be a simple C*-algebra of stable rank one and let $p$ and $q$ be two $σ$-compact open projections. It is proved that there is a continuous path of unitaries in ${\tilde A}$ which connects open sub-projections of $p$ which is compactly contained in $p$ to those in $q.$ It is also shown that every Hilbert module is projective in the category whose morphisms are bounded module maps with adjoints. A discussion of projective Hilbert modules (whose morphisms are bounded module maps) is also given.
Let $λ\in \mathbb{R},$ $μ\in \mathbb{R}$ and $B$ be a linear bounded operator from a Hilbert space $\mathcal{K}$ into another Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}.$ In this paper, we consider the formulas of the absolute value $|Q_{λ,μ}|,$ where $Q_{λ,μ}$ with respect to the decomposition $\mathcal{H}\oplus\mathcal{K}$ have the operator matrix form $Q_{λ,μ}:=\left(\begin{array}{cc}λI&B\\B^*&μI\end{array}\right).$ Then the positive part and the support projection of $Q_{λ,0}$ are obtained. Also, we characterize the symmetry $J$ such that a projection $E$ is the $J$-projection. In particular, the minimal …
We investigate tensor products of Hilbert complexes, in particular the (essential) spectrum of their Laplacians. It is shown that the essential spectrum of the Laplacian associated to the tensor product complex is computable in terms of the spectra of the factors. Applications are given for the $\overline\partial$-Neumann problem on the product of two or more Hermitian manifolds, especially regarding (non-) compactness of the associated $\overline\partial$-Neumann operator.
In 1997, Bauschke, Borwein, and Lewis have stated a trichotomy theorem that characterizes when the convergence of the method of alternating projections can be arbitrarily slow. However, there are two errors in their proof of this theorem. In this note, we show that although one of the errors is critical, the theorem itself is correct. We give a different proof that uses the multiplicative form of the spectral theorem, and the theorem holds in any real or complex Hilbert space, not just in a real Hilbert space.
This paper proves the $L^p$ boundedness of generalized first order Riesz transforms obtained as conditional expectations of martingale transforms à la Gundy-Varopoulos for quite general diffusions on manifolds and vector bundles. Several specific examples and applications are presented: Lie groups of compact type, the Heisenberg group, SU(2), and Riesz transforms on forms and spinors.
In this short article we show an orthogonal decomposition of a Hilbert space as a sum of null solutions of the first derivative and the first derivative of a traceless higher order Hilbert/Sobolev space. We define orthogonal projections and see some of its properties and show case some decomposition of elementary functions as corollaries.
Given a closed linear relation $T$ between two Hilbert spaces $\mathcal H$ and $\mathcal K$, the corresponding first and second coordinate projections $P_T$ and $Q_T$ are both linear contractions from $T$ to $\mathcal H$, and to $\mathcal K$, respectively. In this paper we investigate the features of these graph contractions. We show among others that $P_T^{}P_T^*=(I+T^*T)^{-1}$, and that $Q_T^{}Q_T^*=I-(I+TT^*)^{-1}$. The ranges $\operatorname{ran} P_T^{*}$ and $\operatorname{ran} Q_T^{*}$ are proved to be closely related to the so called `regular part' of $T$. The connection of the graph pro…
We consider the problem of $L^1$ (un)boundedness for a wide class of orthogonal projections, including Bergman projections on domains in complex manifolds and Szegö projections on abstract CR manifolds.
We consider a Hilbert space ${\bf H}$ equipped with a set of strongly continuous bounded semigroups satisfying certain conditions. The conditions allow to define a family of moduli of continuity $Ω^{r}(s,f),\>r\in \mathbb{N}, s>0,$ of vectors in ${\bf H}$ and a family of Paley-Wiener subspaces $PW_σ$ parametrized by bandwidth $σ>0$. These subspaces are explored to introduce notion of the best approximation $\mathcal{E}(σ, f)$ of a general vector in ${\bf H}$ by Paley-Wiener vectors of a certain bandwidth $σ>0$. The main objective of the paper is to prove the so-called Jackson-type estimate $\m…
We characterize Riesz frames and frames with the subframe property and use this to answer most of the questions from the literature concerning these properties and their relationships to the projection methods etc.
We introduce the concept of the touching of two multifunctions on a real Hilbert space, and deduce that certain multifunctions on the space have a unique fixed point. These result are applied to the theory of genaralized cycles and generalized gap vectors for the composition of the projections onto a finite number of closed convex space in a real Hilbert space.
Coordinate formalism on Hilbert manifolds developed in Kryukov is reviewed. The results of Kryukov are applied to the simpliest case of a Hilbert manifold: the abstract Hilbert space. In particular, functional transformations preserving properties of various linear operators on Hilbert spaces are found. Any generalized solution of an arbitrary linear differential equation with constant coefficients is shown to be related to a smooth solution by a (functional) coordinate transformation. The results also suggest a way of using generalized functions to solve nonlinear problems on Hilbert spaces.
Based on the two decades old celebrated Paulsen problem and its solutions for Hilbert spaces by Kwok, Lau, Lee, Ramachandran, Hamilton, and Moitra, we formulate Paulsen problem for Banach spaces. We also formulate projection problem for Banach spaces.
We study contractive projections, isometries, and real positive maps on algebras of operators on a Hilbert space. For example we find generalizations and variants of certain classical results on contractive projections on C*-algebras and JB-algebras due to Choi, Effros, Størmer, Friedman and Russo, and others. In fact most of our arguments generalize to contractive `real positive' projections on Jordan operator algebras, that is on a norm-closed space A of operators on a Hilbert space which are closedunder the Jordan product. We also prove many new general results on real positive maps which a…
