Given a complex Hilbert space H, we study the differential geometry of the manifold M of all projections in V:=L(H). Using the algebraic structure of V, a torsionfree affine connection $\nabla$ (that is invariant under the group of automorphisms of V) is defined on every connected component of M, which in this way becomes a symmetric holomorphic manifold that consists of projections of the same rank r, (0< r < \infty). We prove that M admits a Riemann structure if and only if M consists of projections that have the same finite rank r or the same finite corank, and in that case $\nabla$ is the Levi-Civita and the Kähler connection of M. Moreover, M turns out to be a totally geodesic Riemann manifold whose geodesics and Riemann distance are computed.

Given a complex Hilbert space H and the von Neumann algebra L(H) of all bounded linear operators on H, we study the Grassmann manifold M of all projections in L(H) that have a fixed finite rank r. We take the Jordan-Banach triple theory approach which allows us to define a natural Levi-Civita connection on M. We identify the geodesics, compute the Riemann distance and prove some properties of M
We consider the problem of $L^1$ (un)boundedness for a wide class of orthogonal projections, including Bergman projections on domains in complex manifolds and Szegö projections on abstract CR manifolds.
We generalize the Hartogs triangle to a class of bounded Hartogs domains, and we prove that the corresponding Bergman projections are bounded on $L^p$ if and only if $p$ is in the range $(\frac{2n}{n+1},\frac{2n}{n-1})$.
We will see that vectors in $\CC^n$ have natural analogs as rank 2 projections in $\RR^{2n}$ and that this association transfers many vector properties into properties of rank two projections on $\RR^{2n}$. We believe that this association will answer many open problems in $\CC^n$ where the corresponding problem in $\RR^n$ has already been answered - and vice versa. As a application, we will see that phase retrieval (respectively, phase retrieval by projections) in $\CC^n$ transfers to a variation of phase retrieval by rank 2 projections (respectively, phase retrieval by projections) on $\RR^{…
We study the existence of certain completely bounded Paley projection on the anisotropic Sobolev spaces on tori. Our result should be viewed as a generalization of a similar result obtained by Pełczy{ń}ski and Wojciechowski. By a transference method, we obtain similar results on the Sobolev spaces on quantum tori.
The purpose of this article is to prove a generalisation of the Besicovitch-Federer projection theorem about a characterisation of rectifiable and unrectifiable sets in terms of their projections. For an $m$-unrectifiable set $Σ\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ having finite Hausdorff measure and $\varepsilon>0$, we prove that for a mapping $f\in\mathcal{C}^1(U,\mathbb{R}^n)$ having constant, equal to $m$, rank of the Jacobian matrix there exists a mapping $f_\varepsilon$ whose rank of the Jacobian matrix is also constant, equal to $m$, such that $\|f_\varepsilon-f\|_{\mathcal{C}^1}<\varepsilon$ and $\math…
We investigate some extremal cases of exactness constant and completely bounded projection constant. More precisely, for an $n$-dimensional operator space $E$ we prove that $λ_{cb}(E) = \sqrt{n}$ if and only if $ex(E) = \sqrt{n}$, which is equivalent to $λ_{cb}(E) < \sqrt{n}$ if and only if $ex(E) < \sqrt{n}$.
Building on MacDonald's formula for the distance from a rank-one projection to the set of nilpotents in $\mathbb{M}_n(\mathbb{C})$, we prove that the distance from a rank $n-1$ projection to the set of nilpotents in $\mathbb{M}_n(\mathbb{C})$ is $\frac{1}{2}\sec\left(\fracπ{\frac{n}{n-1}+2}\right)$. For each $n\geq 2$, we construct examples of pairs $(Q,T)$ where $Q$ is a projection of rank $n-1$ and $T\in\mathbb{M}_n(\mathbb{C})$ is a nilpotent of minimal distance to $Q$. Furthermore, we prove that any two such pairs are unitarily equivalent. We end by discussing possible extensions of these …
Let $G $ be a noncompact semisimple Lie group with finite centre. Let $X=G/K$ be the associated Riemannian symmetric space and assume that $X$ is of rank one. The spectral projections associated to the Laplace-Beltrami operator are given by $P_λf =f\ast Φ_λ$, where $Φ_λ$ are the elementary spherical functions on $X$. In this paper, we prove an Ingham type uncertainty principle for $P_λf$. Moreover, similar results are obtained in the case of spectral projections associated to Dunkl Laplacian.
We obtain ceratin estimates for the reproducing kernels of large weighted Bergman spaces. Applications of these estimates to boundedness of the Bergman projection on $L^p(\D,ω^{p/2})$, complex interpolation and duality of weighted Bergman spaces are given.
For the weight function $\prod_{i=1}^{d+1}|x_i|^{2\k_i}$ on the unit sphere, sharp local estimates of the orthogonal projection operators are obtained and used to prove the convergence of the Cesàro $(C,δ)$ means in the weighted $L^p$ space for $δ$ below the critical index. Similar results are also proved for corresponding weight functions on the unit ball and on the simplex.
Let $H$ be a complex Hilbert space whose dimension is not less than $3$ and let ${\mathcal F}_{s}(H)$ be the real vector space formed by all self-adjoint operators of finite rank on $H$. For every non-zero natural $k<\dim H$ we denote by ${\mathcal P}_{k}(H)$ the set of all rank $k$ projections. Let $H'$ be other complex Hilbert space of dimension not less than $3$ and let $L:{\mathcal F}_{s}(H)\to {\mathcal F}_{s}(H')$ be a linear operator such that $L({\mathcal P}_{k}(H))\subset {\mathcal P}_{m}(H')$ for some natural $k,m$ and the restriction of $L$ to ${\mathcal P}_{k}(H)$ is injective. If …
The Bergman projection $P_α$, induced by a standard radial weight, is bounded and onto from $L^\infty$ to the Bloch space $\mathcal{B}$. However, $P_α: L^\infty\to \mathcal{B}$ is not a projection. This fact can be emended via the boundedness of the operator $P_α:BMO_2(Δ)\to\mathcal{B}$, where $BMO_2(Δ)$ is the space of functions of bounded mean oscillation in the Bergman metric. We consider the Bergman projection $P_ω$ and the space $BMO_{ω,p}(Δ)$ of functions of bounded mean oscillation induced by $1<p<\infty$ and a radial weight $ω\in\mathcal{M}$. Here $\mathcal{M}$ is a wide class of radia…
Let $\mathcal{I}\subseteq\mathcal{P}(ω)$ be a meager ideal. Then there are no continuous projections from $\ell_\infty$ onto the set of bounded sequences which are $\mathcal{I}$-convergent to $0$. In particular, it follows that the set of bounded sequences statistically convergent to $0$ is not isomorphic to $\ell_\infty$.
Extending Meshulam's result on the boundedness of orbits of relaxed projections onto affine subspaces from finite to infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces
Let $v(r)=\exp\left(-\fracα{1-r}\right)$ with $α>0$, and let $\mathbb{D}$ be the unit disc in the complex plane. Denote by $A^p_v$ the subspace of analytic functions of $L^p(\mathbb{D},v)$ and let $P_v$ be the orthogonal projection from $L^2(\mathbb{D},v)$ onto $A^2_v$. In 2004, Dostanic revealed the intriguing fact that $P_v$ is bounded from $L^p(\mathbb{D},v)$ to $A^p_v$ only for $p=2$, and he posed the related problem of identifying the duals of $A^p_v$ for $p\ge 1$, $p\neq 2$. In this paper we propose a solution to this problem by proving that $P_v$ is bounded from $\,L^p(\D,v^{p/2})$ to $…
The hierarchical (multi-linear) rank of an order-$d$ tensor is key in determining the cost of representing a tensor as a (tree) Tensor Network (TN). In general, it is known that, for a fixed accuracy, a tensor with random entries cannot be expected to be efficiently approximable without the curse of dimensionality, i.e., a complexity growing exponentially with $d$. In this work, we show that the ground state projection (GSP) of a class of unbounded Hamiltonians can be approximately represented as an operator of low effective dimensionality that is independent of the (high) dimension $d$ of the…
We prove that the norm of the Riesz projection from $L^\infty(\Bbb{T}^n)$ to $L^p(\Bbb{T}^n)$ is $1$ for all $n\ge 1$ only if $p\le 2$, thus solving a problem posed by Marzo and Seip in 2011. This shows that $H^p(\Bbb{T}^{\infty})$ does not contain the dual space of $H^1(\Bbb{T}^{\infty})$ for any $p>2$. We then note that the dual of $H^1(\Bbb{T}^{\infty})$ contains, via the Bohr lift, the space of Dirichlet series in $\operatorname{BMOA}$ of the right half-plane. We give several conditions showing how this $\operatorname{BMOA}$ space relates to other spaces of Dirichlet series. Finally, relat…
